What’s Up With...

Five things San Clemente should know this week Ocean Water Quality at the Pier to be Examined by City THE LATEST: In the past few months, the San Clemente Pier has registered higher bacterial levels than are healthy for humans, as tested by the Orange County Water Protection Program.

According to historical data, the Pier has ended up flagged as having potentially hazardous health problems a few dozen times since the beginning of the year. No closures were issued but they are warnings the program puts out.

“We regularly monitor the postings in beach water quality, and it’s not unusual to have a location (to be flagged) here and there, and when it started popping up more frequently that raised a warning. It doesn’t have that (long-term) historical data, and that’s what we’ve been acquiring,” said Tom Bonigut, deputy Public Works Director for the city of San Clemente.

The Pier hasn’t been monitored as thoroughly as other beach locations in the past. In 2014, the Water Protection Program started monitoring more locations along the Orange County coastline.

The cause of the problems at the Pier may be due to the large number of birds that frequent the Pier, causing droppings to taint the ocean water, but Bonigut said that’s just one possible theory that’s crossed his mind.

“The first step is to test a storm drain that’s under the Pier,” he said. “We’re testing some of the dry-weather runoff and we want to see if that’s coming out of there from upstream. It’s not a large watershed, but depending on that we may look more upstream. But if that’s not indicating anything we’ll do more observations of birds and look at our options of what may attract that many birds to that area.”

According to Water Protection Program officials, in 2012, the regional board brought together resources in order to monitor areas regionally as a way to gather a monitoring plan so the agencies can work under one umbrella to reduce redundancy and collect extra samples, which they said was more effective.

As far as how long the testing will take, Bonigut said that remains to be determined.

“It’s hard to say, and I don’t have test results yet, and it’ll take some time to get some estimates and work on it,” he said.

“It may not be before the summer season is over, but the goal is to have something in place if there’s something that needs to be done before the high beach and dry season end to have it ready.”

THE LATEST: The Coastal Advisory Committee voted to recommend to City Council to examine the possibility of extending the hours people must pay for parking in the Pier Bowl area, specifically Parque Del Mar, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and change it to 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The rates for parking would be the same but the hours would be extended.

“The committee has been discussing that at a few meetings, and the main purpose of talking about metered parking is a way to potentially generate money for sand replenishment,” Deputy Public Works Director Tom Bonigut said. “When people use those services, they’re more than likely going to the beach. There’s potentially another share of that cost just by extending the hours in the popular high-use area that could generate money to maintain the facilities that people use.”

Bonigut said hours of parking around the city vary and that it’s not unusual for coastal cities to have hours that stop at 5 p.m. to make the change to 10 p.m.

The revenue from the parking goes into the city’s general fund, but it may be allocated for the maintenance for facilities people use.

WHAT’S NEXT: Calculations for how much additional revenue this would generate

for the city have not yet been calculated.

RV Fire Sends Two to Hospital THE LATEST: Two people were sent to Orange County Global Medical Center on Monday after a recreational vehicle caught fire. One man and one woman, whose ages were not specified, had to be transferred to the facility after suffering non-life-threatening injuries, according to Orange County Fire Authority officials.

The fire took place on the 900 Block of Avnenida Pico in a parking lot.

In 2015, a similar RV fire took place in the same area. A man’s RV caught fire after the engine failed and ignited the entire vehicle. That took place on the 900 Block of Avenida Pico in the Walmart parking lot.

CUSD Pursues $889 Million Bond Measure sans Rancho Mission Viejo THE LATEST: The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees further refined its strategy for pursuing an $889 million general obligation bond at the board’s July 13 meeting, with the majority of trustees voting to create a districtwide School Facilities Improvement District (SFID) that excludes Rancho Mission Viejo.

The board voted 6-1, with Trustee Jim

Reardon dissenting, to approve a resolution of intent to form the SFID. If approved by voters in November, staff estimated residents within the SFID will be taxed a maximum of $43 per $100,000 of assessed value of their homes.

The board also voted to table a second resolution calling for an SFID exclusively for the Rancho Mission Viejo area, with trustees saying that the district’s current needs should be their focus before funding future needs of new schools.

The only school currently excluded from the approved SFID would be Esencia Elementary School, planned in Rancho Mission Viejo with a fall 2018 opening.

Over the last several months, the board has discussed placing an $889 million bond measure on the Nov. 8 general election ballot, which would be used to leverage state funds and pay for more than $800 million of deferred maintenance of district facilities. In San Clemente, that includes improvements for elementary schools, middle schools and $91 million in enhancements for San Clemente High School alone, which is more than 50 years

old. SCHS projects on the district’s list include a new student services building, additional parking, a new library media center, a new performing arts theater, a locker room expansion and remodel, gym modernization and a new 50-meter Olympic size pool.

Trustees have debated back and forth over whether to pursue smaller regional bonds, a districtwide bond or an SFID with areas carved out, such as Rancho Mission Viejo. Some trustees have noted that after speaking with constituents, they felt a single bond was the clearer, more transparent choice versus potentially confusing residents with six SFIDs. Other trustees have argued that smaller regional bonds would appeal to residents who don’t feel connected to the needs of other communities and schools, and alternatively would allow a city to vote no on its own bond without limiting other cities’ access to funds. Recently a group of Talega residents have attended board meetings to say they wouldn’t support the bond measure due to issues such as ongoing over-taxation, mismanagement of

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO Grading Continues, Unearths Artifact at Inn at the Mission Construction Site The site for the future Inn at the Mission luxury boutique hotel is taking shape as grading continues on the grounds, located at the corner of Ortega Highway and El Camino Real. Recently, an artifact was discovered, identified by the hotel project’s archaeologist and Native American monitor on site.

“We uncovered a grinding stone, known as a metate, which was used by the native Juaneño living in or around the Mission,” said Jake Griffith, development analyst for Mission Commercial Properties. Griffith said the artifact was identified after monitors used tools to carefully excavate the object.

Plans for the new 124-room, three-story hotel are currently under city review, but Griffith said grading is possible due to the permits already acquired for the previous Plaza Banderas project that was planned for the site years ago.

“The grading for both Plaza Banderas and Inn at the Mission requires the same geotechnical remediation,” Griffith said.

“The grading we are currently performing is required for any development on the site.”

The difference between the two hotel plans isn’t the amount of grading, but the amount of soil needed to fill the ground.

With the Inn at the Mission’s proposed underground parking, less imported soil— about 20,000 cubic yards—is needed to level the pad.

mately 17,000 cubic yards of soil,” said Dan Friess, principal at Mission Commercial Properties. “The fill soil is not yet scheduled—we still have a couple of months of geotechnical work to complete.”

DANA POINT Air Dancers Installed in Dana Point Harbor to Deter Sea Lions As two men in kayaks rode by one of the city’s harbor docks on July 6 afternoon, they watched inflatable tubes dance and wave their arms. Those inflatable tubes, also known as air dancers, have been re-

cently installed by the county to deter sea lions.

Currently four air dancers, commonly seen at car dealerships, reside outside of Harbor Patrol. The patriotic colors of red, white and blue were not just installed for the holiday weekend, but instead were installed as part of a pilot program to help deter sea lions and protect boats.

The Orange County Parks Department has been working with the Dana Point Marina Operator on the pilot program, which began just before the Fourth of July.

In recent weeks, the sea lions have been making themselves at home along docks and boats, which can cause damages and a mess.

“It’s plainly obvious we have a problem,” said James Lenthall with the Dana Point

Boaters Association. “Their population has been increasing in the last few weeks to months; it comes and goes. More recently, there have been a lot more of them around.”

Lenthall said boat owners are often finding the sea lions on boats’ swim steps and on the boat docks. He added he and other Dana Point boaters know how difficult it can be to shoo the animals away.

“Sea lions are not very cooperative when you want to move them,” Lenthall said. “I’ve seen a group of people try to yell to scare one away, and the sea lion just yelled back.”

County officials said other obstacles have been attempted to keep the sea lions off the docks, but hope this program will work.

“They can be startled with loud noise,” said Julianna Steers with the Ocean Institute. “Other things can definitely spook them, it just depends.”

The idea of the air dancers sprung from a boater who heard about the concept working in a Northern California town.

Although there weren’t too many of the mammals seen on July 4, not everyone says the program is completely working.

“It’s not perfectly effective,” Lenthall said. “I saw a sea lion over the weekend on the dock near one (of the air dancers.)”

Jim Miller, owner of Coffee Importers, said he hasn’t seen the inflatables used to deter the sea lions before, but believes it’s a good idea.

Each air dancer is $150, and runs off the power supply already on the docks. The county plans on installing more on four docks nearest the harbor entrance.

Currently, the program is in its pilot stage, and will continue if it’s effective.

However, if it doesn’t seem to be working, the county said they would reevaluate.

Relay for Life San Clemente is 10 a.m. July 23 to 10 a.m. July 24 Relay for Life participants will be able to camp out at Thalassa Stadium, 700 Avenida Pico, at San Clemente High School for the annual event. According to the relay for life website, more than $27,000 has been raised so far by local participants.

The event will benefit the American Cancer Society, specifically raising awareness of breast cancer.

Children with Court Appointed Special Advocates to Get Free OC Park Access Volunteers who mentor many of Orange County’s neediest children will have free parking at County regional, wilderness and beach parks, thanks to a new program with OC Parks and Court Appointed Special Advocates of Orange County (CASA) designed to get those children outside.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors today approved a Memorandum of Understanding with CASA that provides their volunteer advocates with OC Parks annual passes free of charge. CASA is a nonprofit organization that provides children in care with trained volunteer mentors to advocate for their best interests.

“This agreement allows CASA volunteers to provide positive outdoor experiences in our County parks to children who have been abused and neglected,” San Clemente Times July 21-27, 2016

CASA volunteers enrich the lives of children in the program and help them develop life skills through activities and quality time spent together in various settings. In addition to the park passes, the MOU waives park fees for CASA events, including advocate/youth picnics. As part of the agreement, CASA will provide sponsorship value to OC Parks by featuring the OC Parks logo at events and completing a habitat restoration project annually.

San Clemente Village Needs Volunteers, to host Event July 27 San Clemente Village is a new nonprofit that is preparing to launch a membershipbased program in September designed to keep senior citizens independent and living in their homes for as long as possible.

“The village concept began in Boston and has spread across the country, with San Clemente having the first village in Orange County,” according to a press release from the organization.

From 5-7 p.m. on July 27, the San Clemente Village will host a get-together at the Outlets at San Clemente VIP room. People will be able to learn more about the organization and its mission to bring people together to help each other.

Fighting for Me Nonprofit to Host Fundraising Event The nonprofit organization Fighting for Me will host an event at the San Clemente Outlets to help sexual abuse survivors and their families.

Amanda Zarate, the executive director of the organization, will host a Warrior Festival for the local community. At the July 30 event, Zarate plans to take the largest-ever group selfie in support of sexual abuse survivors.

The Meaning of ‘a Good Community’

W

hat does “being a good community” entail?

America’s first governor might give us a clue.

An election convention makes a great time to consider America’s view of community.

Disputes abound incessantly about the responsibilities of ensuring domestic tranquility, providing for our common defense and promoting the general welfare.

Although Americans generally consider themselves an independent lot, we hold the concept of community in very high esteem. Yet, in many ways, “community” is the antithesis of “rugged individualism”— a concept we also embrace with near reverential regard.

So, how did our American forefathers see the argument—were they for the colony of beavers or the proud lone wolf?

By their writings, the original forefathers seemed to consign community ahead of individuality. One reason might be the challenges they faced. The early European settlers of the American continent suffered from both religious and political persecution. Under constant threat from violence, tyranny, disease and starvation they needed each other just for survival.

Just because the city refused to abide

by Senate Bill 2, requiring all California cities to designate zones where a group can buy or lease land and develop a shelter without needing discretionary approvals from the city, the issue of homelessness in San Clemente has not gone away. And neither have their advocates. I worked with IHOPE while it was here in the city. It was a place where homeless people could get a lunch, shower or wash their clothes. Counseling was also available. There have been ongoing efforts by a group of dedicated citizens working to establish a shelter here in San Clemente. They have been met with opposition from the city time and time again as well as from residents who shouted, “Not in my backyard!”

It is unfortunate that it takes a “law” to force a city to care for their less fortunate neighbors, but that is what SB2 does.

Last Friday, an Orange County Superior Court judge struck down San Clemente’s ordinance governing homeless shelters, ordering the city to scrap it and pass one that makes it easier to start a shelter.

The judge ruled in favor of a coalition of law firms that sued the city in 2014. They argued that the city’s ordinance, adopted in 2014 to comply with a state mandate to facilitate shelters, made it nearly impossible to start one in San Clemente.

The judge ordered the city to “set aside the ordinance and adopt one that establishes at least one zone in town where shelters are permitted by right, without needing discretionary approvals. The city also must set standards designed to encourage and facilitate the development of shelters in suitable locations,” the ruling said.

Compromises were offered to the city numerous times but always rejected. I am wondering why my neighbors here in San Clemente and my city councilperson are so opposed to helping the less fortunate. No one should be without a place to live. The street corners and park benches are not a

That doesn’t much sound like social Darwinism does it? It hardly sounds like Wall Street, Citi Bank, or Halliburton either. For that matter, it doesn’t sound like anyone in Congress or the presidential nominees today. In fact, the only person it sounds like is the Prince of Peace himself.

I’d like to believe we have these qualities in our own community. Despite our proud illusions, it has never really been about the “me”; it’s been about the “us.” Common good. Communal life. Community commitment. That’s how this great nation has really been built.

substitute. While many of these folks could certainly use medical attention, others are simply down on their luck temporarily.

Many cities are working hard to establish a “no homeless city.” Among them are Phoenix and Salt Lake City, who have found it much cheaper to provide housing than leave people unsheltered. I believe San Clementeans can step up and become the city that Ole Hanson visualized.

Instead of turning a blind eye, let’s extend a helping hand.

At the Movies: These Ghosts Are a Bit of a Bust

t’s a tale as old as time (or as old as the 1980s, to be more realistic): a Hollywood studio chooses to revisit an original idea from a long time ago rather than green-light a new, unique concept. Seven years ago, it was the Star Trek reboot. Last year, it was Star Wars. And right now, it’s Ghostbusters.

But this time, comedy filmmaker Paul Feig is giving us a gender-swapped remake. With a good cast and interesting spin, is it actually good?

teaching job, Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) reunites with her old friend, colleague and fellow paranormal believer Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) to explore and experiment with engineer Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon). They start with successfully proving a famous house is haunted and then quickly come up with the idea to become professional “ghostbusters.”

tour so polarizing because I think everything that has to be said already has been by now. I can say that Feig and company have made much smoother and entertaining films with Bridesmaids (2011) and Spy (2015). Ghostbusters has stale writing, sloppy editing and a weak villain to boot. One good thing I can add is that Wiig gives probably her best lead performance since Bridesmaids, but it is wasted with a rushed product. Unless you’re a diehard fan of this comedy group, you’d be better off re-watching the original. SC

The Trouble with Teens and Late Nights Shifting sleep patterns affect the school day

M

y youngest son spent the first few weeks of his summer break as predicted. He returned home from his freshman year of college and promptly walked out the door to reunite with his high school friends, spending long days on sandy beaches and late nights at local hangouts.

Then, one warm evening, a friendly game of flag football put a stop to his revelry when he fractured his foot, forcing him into a non-weight-bearing cast for more than a month. He said goodbye to the sunny outdoors and hello to a dark bedroom to binge-watch Netflix.

With my son’s summer plans splintered, I suggested he catch-up on his rest after a semester of all-nighters. My son has fought sleep since the day we brought him home from the hospital, and asking my petulant teen to snooze proved as problematic as putting a teething toddler to bed.

When my son was small, I spent countless nights lying near his crib waiting for him to fall asleep. Eventually, our bedtime battles would exhaust us both. But before I’d creep out of his room and return to mine, I’d pause to peek into his crib and marvel at the magic of my sleeping baby boy.

A week into my son’s bedrest, I again suggested he sleep to pass the time. He resisted my request and said, “It’s impossible because of circadian rhythms.”

My soon-to-be sophomore son is studying science, and he’s also familiar with my sluggish left brain, so he translated, “It’s my biological body clock.”

Studies found that a teenager’s internal body clock resets around puberty, creating a natural shift of about two hours in their sleep patterns. When this occurs, adolescents accustomed to falling asleep around 9 p.m. can’t fall asleep until 11 p.m.—and forcing them into an earlier bedtime doesn’t help.

Simply stated, teens are wired to stay up late and wake up late.

In high school, both my boys became creatures of the night, and college helped exacerbate their nocturnal existence.

Colleges cultivate their students’ circadian rhythms. When I attended my older son’s freshman orientation, I was surprised to learn that the welcome week activities, including carnivals and movie nights, all began at 10 p.m.

Last month, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine released its first official recommendations for sleep required to

promote optimal health in children and teenagers. They found teens ages 13 to 18 need eight to 10 hours of sleep each night.

Parents and educators aware of the advantages of well-rested pupils are launching grassroots movements across the country imploring schools to implement later start times.

Researchers agree teens perform their best academically and behaviorally the later the school day starts and offer this analogy: “Requiring an older teenager to wake up at 7 a.m. is like asking a teacher to wake up at 4:30 a.m.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, five out of six middle and high schools ring their first bell before 8:30 a.m., despite recommendations that secondary schools begin no earlier than 8:30 a.m. to promote students’ mental and physical wellbeing.

Sleep-deprived teens are more susceptible to a host of health problems ranging from accidentprone injuries to feelings of anxiety.

Next month another school year starts and students are stocking up on classroom supplies when what they really need to stockpile is sleep.

My son’s counting down the time until the doctor cuts off his cast and he returns to college. He’s adjusted to his days in a cast but not his nights; he’s uncomfortable and it takes hours for him to fall asleep. When he finally does doze off, I can’t resist pausing to glance at my grown son sleeping like a baby in his childhood bedroom—it’s a sight I never tire of seeing.

Lights, Camera, Dinner Adele’s at the San Clemente Inn celebrates 10 years

S

he has indelible confidence and a penchant for entertainment.

Adele Lux, the owner of Adele’s at the San Clemente Inn, enjoys providing unique entertainment as well as quality options for dinner.

Born and raised in San Clemente, Adele worked as a waitress for 20 years before opening her own restaurant. She said she established her business in the Old City Plaza with not much money in the bank.

“Many people would say it was financial suicide,” she said. “I didn’t have any money for advertising, but I had food. So, I would count how many people were at a bank or another business and I would bring them breakfast. Even though they didn’t order it, I would tell them ‘I’m the new restaurant in town and I’d like you to try my food.’”

Adele said she would complement the breakfast with her business cards and people eventually got to know her business.

“I was there for eight and a half years, Adele’s Café, but the (event room) at the San Clemente Inn had been vacant for 15 years, but I had catered and done parties here,” she said. “My mom says ‘If you don’t ask, you don’t know,’ and my attorney says ‘If you don’t ask, the answer is always no,’ so I approached them and we decided to rebirth this place.”

The 10-year anniversary of Adele’s at the San Clemente Inn will be Aug. 3.

“We made it through the toughest of times,” she said, adding she started doing the Powder and Poof shows about six years ago when the economy wasn’t doing well. “I had a friend at the Boom Boom Room in Laguna Beach, and we had to do something—80 percent of restaurants in the area were closed or not doing well.”

She also has Hart & Soul 30s and 40s songbook and open mic on the fourth Friday of every month. Adele said she wanted to stand out and provide entertainment for the masses. The shows are

“My claim to fame is breakfast, and we were open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. but when the economy turned we couldn’t absorb that,” Adele said.

She also has been a fan-favorite with mixology competitions and other local awards.

“Even today, one of the toughest things is making sure an employee will show up, but I think I have the best staff in the world,” she said. “I train down because you’re only as good as your weakest employee. People sometimes think waitresses are a dime a dozen and that’s not true at all. A good waitress is hard to find.”

One of Adele’s employees, David, has been with her since the beginning of the café.

“You absolutely have to love what you do, or it won’t work,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how much money you make; it matters how much you save. San Clemente is really a great place to run a business. And you just have to get your name out there and be consistent with good customer service.”

Lower Mississippi Cruise: A Search for History

I

n all, the entire seven-day cruise was a delightful learning experience. Two of us, Don Bailes, a lifelong friend, and I planned the trip for months. The very muddy Mississippi is a vast and wandering waterway, and a new boat, (careful, not a “ship”) with only a few months on the water under its wide hull was a pleasure.

Passengers totaling 150 with a crew of 50 stewards, cleaning crews, and boat operators was also ideal, and the service was excellent during the entire week.

In Memphis, Tennessee, we spent Friday night at the comfortable Sheraton hotel and toured the city by trolley, which cost only $1. The next day, we had a memorable experience in being guided through the Vicksburg National Military Park, commemorating the 1863 siege between the Union and Confederate Armies, principally the battle and state monuments

honoring fallen soldiers. We toured the downtown and took in the unique riverboat murals, the Old Courthouse, Old Train Depot, and Coca-Cola Museums.

Next were Natchez, Mississippi, and visits to Frogmore and Longwood Plantations, featuring antebellum lifestyles from 1790 to the present, comparing and contrasting a working cotton plantation, slave culture, sharecropping, and modern technology. We explored the buildings, including a rare antique steam gin as well as the only completely computerized gin in the nation. Longwood was an elegant historic octagonal house which was never completely built. It had original first floor furnishings, complete with a large cloth fly swatter moved by a rope which served as a hand held fan over the dining table.

The upper five stores are “still a work in progress.”

In St. Francisville, Louisiana, we toured the Rosedown Plantation, with stories of the families who lived and worked in this Southern culture. We also enjoyed the unique shopping opportunity at Grandmother’s Buttons, a fascinating array of gifts and rarities.

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, we were able to visit a naval destroyer which was a memorial to the Second World War forces, take a swamp tour to visit the alligators, and tour the old state capital. We learned a great deal about the infamous or famous (depending on who you’re talking to) Huey Long and his many political, organizational, and construction achievements.

Before entering the waters of New Orleans, Louisiana, we stopped at Oak Alley and walked the gorgeous, oak-filled grounds of Oak Alley plantation, the slave’s quarters, and working areas.

The last day, before boarding our transportation home, many of us took an encompassing city bus tour of New Orleans, passing by highlights including the French Quarter, stately mansions of the exclusive Garden District, and learning about the city’s significant art and music, history, culture, museums, architecture, and, of course, the annual Mardi Gras.

Food and drink—Outstanding - meals were on the whole—splendid, tasty, varied. Lusty drinks were served for lunch, dinner, and cocktail hours; breakfasts included quiche, pancakes, waffles, and 8

varieties of egg dishes, as well as ample sides. Luncheons boasted turkey and BLT club sandwiches, flounder meuniere, and braised chicken. Dinners provided steak, shrimps, and lobster, among other creative dishes.

Onboard lectures and discussions— interesting— Dale Blanshan, Introduced “…as a gentleman with a guitar and a penchant for stories and music from days gone by” was the primary speaker on board the America. At various times during the trip, he shared his knowledge of “old rural churches and gospel singing,” the history of the American flag, history of the United States through song, Norman Rockwell and patriotism, Tin Pan Alley and jazz fireworks. The boat’s captain and crew made a special effort to hold over our departure on July 4 to enable passengers to watch Vicksburg’s spectacular fireworks show. Patriot-themed drinks were also available on the upper deck.

Our Daily Newspaper, a copy of the USA Times, a publication of American Cruise Lines, was made available to us so we could keep up with what was going on with featured news of the world, finance, and sports.

Ship to Shore Guides—helpful—Each day, we received an hourly list of happenings for the day, included meals, tours, events, activities, and presentations.

The boat captain—cordial and competent - Captain Max Taber headed our river boat. He started his career at 12 as a lobster fisherman. Boats became his love, and he qualified as a commander before he was 20. Now 29, he has cruised on the majority of America’s rivers, and most of the American Cruise Line tours. He conducted a most interesting discussion on the inner workings and the pilot house space where the sailing happens.

We met fellow travelers from all over the country. We especially enjoyed meeting, sharing meals, and tours with Ken and Jenny from California’s southern desert and Nancy and Trish from the Washington, D.C. area. We highly recommend this trip.

San Clemente Ocean Festival Shines on 40th Anniversary Results from an actionpacked weekend by the Pier COMPILED BY STEVE BREAZEALE

A

n estimated 56,000 people were treated to great weather and exciting action at the 40th installment of the San Clemente Ocean Festival, July 16-17.

As opposed to last year’s Ocean Fest, where spotty weather and lightning dampened spirits, this year’s version of the iconic San Clemente event featured plenty of sunshine and good water conditions for the lifeguards and athletes competing.

The event kicked off with lifeguard contests on July 16 at the Pier, and concluded with the popular Great Rubber Duck Contest on July 17, in which thousands of numbered toys “raced” through the surf in an attempt to wash up the beach first.

Surf, stand-up paddleboard, fishing, sand sculpting and Ironman events filled up the days, as locals and tourists wandered the beach taking it all in.

There were several standout events this year, according to Ocean Festival race director Barrett Tester, but one of the highlights of the weekend took place during the Dory Boat races. For the first time in Ocean Fest history, a team of women competed in the field. The Huntington Beach duo of Madison Feldman and Renae Jackson participated in the event, taking seventh overall in the Race 1 and sixth overall in Race 2.

Ideal conditions also led to one of the most exciting Grom’s Rule surf contests Tester has seen.

“The groms were awesome. The conditions were really good for that because the surf wasn’t too big or chaotic and I think it was one of the best ones ever,” Tester said. “San Clemente is a hot bed for youth surfing and we saw that out there.”

Daniel (Dan) Drake Gorman, Sr.

On the morning of May 20, 2016, Dan passed away peacefully at Countryside Nursing Home in Pilot Point, TX after a long battle with Alzheimer’s & complications from that disease. Dan was 76 years old.

Daniel Drake Gorman was born June 10, 1939 in San Bernardino, CA. He was the 4th son of James Alden and Helen N. (Garcia) Gorman. During his early childhood years he was known as “Jerry.”

OBITUARY to San Clemente, CA where they lived for over 40 years. Dan started his own independent insurance agency Dan Gorman Insurance and later Mission Viejo Insurance. In 1970 Dan received his ‘CLU’ Chartered Life Underwriter designation and in 1982 the designation of ‘CIC’ Certified Insurance Counselor.

Dan was president of the San Clemente Kiwanis Club in 1974-75 and was very active in the community.

Dans hobbies were golf, travel, snow & water skiing, fishing and flying his airplane.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents James & Helen Gorman, brothers James A. Gorman, Jr., Ronald Richard Gorman and John ‘Jack’ Gorman.

Dan is survived by his wife of 55 years Barbara Gorman of Sanger, TX. Children: son Dan Jr. (Sue) of San Clemente, CA; daughter Dana Ann Stephens (Ron) of San Clemente, CA and daughter Christiane ‘Christie’ McClary (Ty) of Valley View, TX. Grandchildren: Reilly & Bridget Gorman, Rachel & Shawn Stephens and Marley Mae McClary.

Ocean Fest: Out of the Water Some of the contests that took place at Ocean Fest were not confined strictly to the water. Other popular events included the Fishing Derby, which took place on the Pier, and sand sculpting contests.

Anglers or all ages reeled in an eclectic mix of fish, while sand sculptors impressed on-lookers and judges alike with their creations, which ranged from titles such as “Pokémon Mountain” to a recreation of Mount Rushmore.

Presho Captains USA Volleyball to Silver Medal in Havana

I

t’s not often an athlete gets to represent his or her country at the highest level of competition. It’s even rarer for that athlete to be named the captain of a team that dons the stars and stripes.

USA Volleyball coaches recognized Kyler Presho’s ability as a leader on and off the court during the first stages of his tryout for the U.S. Boy’s Youth National Team and pinned the captain label on him two days into camp. Presho’s competitiveness and drive to push his teammates struck a chord with the coaches, and the soon-to-be-senior at San Clemente High School was rewarded for it.

Presho, an All-South Coast League middle blocker, went on to lead the BYNT to a silver medal on foreign soil at the NORECA Boys’ U19 Continental Championships in Havana, Cuba on June 29.

By placing second, the American team automatically qualified for a spot in next year’s World Championships.

Presho has the ability to be the dynamo of any team he plays for, according to San Clemente head coach Ken Goldstone.

That’s why, for the first time in several years, Goldstone tabbed Presho to be one of the Tritons co-captains as a junior in 2015. The honor is usually reserved for seniors. Goldstone said the 6-foot-8-incher sets the tone in the weight room, in practice and on the court.

“There’s no cruise control speed. He plays hard out there,” Goldstone said.

“He’s a perfectionist and he wants to get things done time after time … There are so many different things he does to inspire other guys on the team.”

When the preliminary cuts were made to whittle the BYNT down to its final 12-man roster that would travel to Cuba, Presho noticed he was surrounded by like-minded players. At the highest levels, teams like the BYNT are full of alpha dogs that are ultra-competitive. He felt right

at home. Presho said he helped foster an atmosphere of accountability, which made the team come together in a short amount of time.

“Everyone in there was pretty similarly competitive like me, and that’s what I thought was awesome,” Presho said. “Anybody can say, ‘Hey you need to be trying harder’ to anybody and that’s what made us a really good team.”

The bond between the team grew stronger as they continued to train at Cal State Fullerton throughout the summer, Presho said. Their sights were set on taking gold in Cuba.

The BYNT made short work of its competition in pool play, defeating Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, respectively, to start the tournament 3-0.

Presho had a team-high 10 points in the win over the Dominican Republic.

A talented Mexico team awaited the Americans in the semifinals, and the BYNT was nearly sent home packing.

After a see-saw battle, Mexico held match point in the fifth set at 15-14, but a timely kill by Presho in the middle evened the score and the USA would rally to win the set, and the match, 17-15. The win put the BYNT in the finals, which ensured a trip to next year’s World Championships.

“We managed to just fight through adversity that whole match (against Mexico) and managed to get a really big win,” Presho said. “(To qualify for the World Championships) was our number one goal going into the tournament.”

The championship match against Cuba came down to the wire, but the home team came away with a five-set victory. Presho said he was impressed with the Cuban team’s length up and down the roster and the team’s athletic ability.

Presho will return to SCHS for his senior season with a new goal of returning the Tritons to the top of the South Coast League standings. He’ll no doubt be in the gym, leading the team every step of the way. SC

Look for mainly waistshoulder high (3-4’+) waves at good exposures while standouts produce occasional head high (5’) sets/peaks. rom surfskis to SUPs, there was a plethora of surfing this weekend as Ocean Festival participants enjoyed warm weather and clear skies.

One of the main events held Saturday July 16 was the sixth annual SUP surfing contest, where men and women can compete in their respective divisions for SUP glory: SUP open women’s, SUP men’s 39 under and SUP men’s 40 over.

Competitors had a max of 10 waves with judges taking their top three at the end of each round. The participants started on the north side of the San Clemente pier, and had to catch their best waves before the end of each round.

The first rounds started early in the morning with Nikki Newland, Shae Foudy, and two-time SUWT Champion and ISA Gold Medalist in SUP Surfing, Izzi Gomez, taking first place in their individual rounds.

Leading the first round of heats for men’s 39 under was Anthony Maltese, Jedd Hasay and Haakon Hoyer-Nielson, while Drew Brophy, Byron Kurt and Dave Boehne led the men’s 40 over.

Boehne said this was his first year competing in the SUP men’s over 40 event.

GROM OF THE WEEK

CATALINA DOWNER

ith only a couple years of surfing under her belt, 8-year-old Catalina Downer is already making a name for herself in local surf competitions.

This weekend at the Ocean Festival in San Clemente, Catalina battled it out against 24 other under-12 girls in the “Groms Rule” Surf Contest.

Catalina has been surfing since she was 6 years old, and this was her first year competing in the Ocean Festival.

“I like the big waves and when you get on the wave it’s really fun when you have a good wave” Catalina said.

She explained she liked the big waves because, “they’re just fun to drop in on and stuff.”

Boehne is well-known in the Dana Point community for designing and shaping Infinity surfboards and SUPs. “It was fun being the ‘young’ guy in the

side her older sister, Sierra, in the semifinal heat after Catalina placed second in the first round. Although Sierra did not advance to the final round, the bond between these two sisters is tangible. Cheering on the shore with her family during Catalina’s final heat, Sierra would rush to the water’s edge every time she came in through the surf, and made sure to point her sister in the right direction.

Catalina came in with a sixth place win at the “Groms Rule” surf contest awards, and wore her medal proudly. This is also Catalina’s first year competing in the WSA/ Salt Life Championship Tour Series in the Micro Grom Girls U10 Division.

She said when she grows up, “I either want to be a professional surfer, or if don’t make it that far a golfer or soccer player.”

First and foremost, she wants to be a pro surfer.

In her free time, Catalina likes to play soccer and golf. She will be going into third grade this year at Concordia Elementary, and her mother, Abby Downer, said she loves math and reading.

Boehne said he got into SUP naturally because he loves the ocean and finds it as another means to enjoy it.

Giorgio Gomez, Izzi Gomez’s brother, was a tough competitor in the 39 under final round. Also known for competing in the Stand Up World Tour (SUWT), Gomez said this was his second year competing at the Ocean Festival. Gomez has been a San Clemente local for two years now after living in Florida, and said he enjoys the consistency of California surf, and hanging out with the Infinity guys.
