Five things San Clemente should know this week Two Die in Motorcycle Accident; Third Driver was Allegedly Intoxicated THE LATEST: A woman and a man in their mid-30s died as a result of their injuries from a motorcycle collision that occurred at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday on northbound Interstate 5 near Avenida Vista Hermosa, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.

The Orange County Coroner’s office reported Christopher Goodrich, 35, was the driver, and Luz Goodrich, 32, was the passenger. Both victims were Lakeside residents. Luz’s birthday was on Saturday.

On Monday, July 11, California Highway Patrol released the details of the incident.

According to the CHP report, 65-yearold Stephen Godfrey was driving under the influence and driving too fast in the lane where Luz and Christopher were traveling.

The left front of Godfrey’s 1999 Toyota Camry Solara collided with the back of the motorcycle they were riding and ejected both passengers from the motorcycle.

The traffic was so congested after the accident, Concialdi said, that some OCFA paramedics had to travel the wrong way from Camino De Estrella down the 5 to reach the patients.

“They both had extensive injuries to their heads, and they were taken to Mission Hospital in critical condition,” Concialdi said. “Our paramedics did everything they could to save them, but they were both pronounced dead in the trauma room at Mission.”

Both of the victims were wearing their helmets, Concialdi said.

WHAT’S NEXT: Godfrey has been charged with gross vehicular manslaughter and is currently being held on $100,000 bail.

DBA Valet Parking Program Back this Summer THE LATEST: The Downtown Business Association is contracting with LAZ Parking once again to provide valet service on San Clemente Times July 14-20, 2016

Avenida Del Mar. Valet parking will be available from 6 p.m. to about midnight on Friday and Saturday nights, and if it is successful, the valet could be extended to Thursdays. The valet service started on July 8. Cars can pull into the bus area in front of Avila’s El Ranchito. This week the valet will run Thursday and Friday.

The company will look at usage numbers to later determine whether to continue the program for additional weeks, said Eric Smith, director of business development, for LAZ parking.

WHAT’S NEXT: The dates parking will not take place are during Ocean Festival, July 16 and 17; during the San Clemente Fiesta, Aug. 7; and during the Arts and Craft Show, Aug. 20 and 21. The valet service costs $5 but could increase. —Staff

Group Files Lawsuit Against City’s STLU Zoning Ordinances THE LATEST: The resident-based organization San Clemente Vacation Rentals Alliance (SCVRA) filed a lawsuit June 20 against the city, claiming its short-term lodging unit laws are out of compliance with the California Coastal Act. The California Coastal Commission gives cities the option to adopt their own coastal land use plan (CLUP) for more self-governance. Until they do so, cities must apply for coastal development permits for construction that must comply with the Coastal Act, and, as SCVRA argues, the laws that govern the uses within the Coastal Zone jurisdiction.

Local resident James Payne, who represents San Clemente Vacation Rental Alliance, stated in a letter to the California Coastal Commission that the permitting process for STLUs has reduced the 512 permittees down to about 68. This would have an impact of eliminating 87 percent of available lodging units and about 25,000 lodging nights for the city, which now requires rental owners to file transient occupancy tax forms to be in compliance.

His statistics were based on a report from the city of San Clemente.

The city’s ordinance requires no shortterm lodging unit can operate within 300 feet of another.

Payne and his wife own a STLU in San Clemente, which he said they’ve rented to visitors for more than 14 years.

“SCVRA fully agrees with common sense rules regulating vacation rentals, including quiet hours, occupancy and other restrictions we already have in our rental contracts with vacationers,” Payne stated in an email. “We focus on being good neighbors. The small handful of bad actors can be dealt with via regulatory enforcement actions, which the city of San

Clemente put in place shortly before its decision to enact the zoning ban.”

SCE Claims Customers Won’t Pay for Failed Equipment in Decommissioning Process THE LATEST: Southern California Edison said its customers will not pay for the equipment of the nuclear power plant that failed in 2012, eventually leading to the closure of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, according to a filing with the California Public Utilities Commission on July 7.

“The settlement of the San Onofre nuclear plant closure appropriately requires that Southern California Edison customers do not pay for failed equipment provided

by Mitsubishi that prompted the closure,” SCE stated in the filing.

On May 9, the CPUC decided to reopen the ruling regarding the distribution of responsibility for the cost of the plant’s decommissioning as well as losses from closing the plant, which cost an estimated $5 billion and would require ratepayers to foot most of that bill. The original settlement was reached in 2014 between San Diego Gas & Electric as well as consumer, environmental and labor activists, but the CPUC and SCE have been under invesPage 3

tigation since 2014 after it was disclosed that secret negotiations for the costs took place between the two entities.

The CPUC has reopened the case that pinned ratepayers of the utility to examine the equitable responsibility for decommissioning the power plant.

WHAT’S NEXT: On Tuesday, the California State Lands Commission announced it will begin preparing a draft environmental impact report for decommissioning SONGS from 5-6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, at the Oceanside City Hall, 300 North Coast Highway. Districting Measure Signatures Verified for Ballot THE LATEST: On Tuesday, the Orange County Registrar of Voters verified the signatures for the ballot measure that will ask voters if they would like to establish five separate voting districts in San Clemente for City Council, or remain at-large.

If it passes, voters would elect Council members from their represented district, similar to congressional districts.

WHAT’S NEXT: The measure would start districted elections in San Clemente with the 2018 general election. The City Council will have the ballot measure on the Aug. 2 regular meeting agenda.

The Council will be given three options: they could adopt the ordinance without alteration to be on the ballot in November, submit the ballot measure for a special election or request an additional report on the measure. —EH www.sanclementetimes.com

Monthly Stand-up Comedy Night Coming to Adele’s in San Clemente Adele’s at the San Clemente Inn announced it will begin its first of “many nights” of stand-up comedy on Friday, Aug. 5. “Lass Your Aff Off!” is produced by veteran comedian and Orange County resident Tom Riehl and will feature top-name comedians currently touring the U.S. Those familiar with Orange County comedy will recognize Riehl as co-producer of one of the longest running comedy shows, Second Stage Stand-Up, at the Camino Real Playhouse in San Juan Capistrano, currently coming up on its eightyear anniversary. James P. Connolly, who has appeared on VH1, Comedy Central and HBO, will headline the event.

Also appearing will be Cindy Burns, the producer of Orange County’s Funniest Housewives and winner of the “Joan Rivers Knows Comedy Contest,” as well as Ron Ruhman.

Casa Romantica Awarded Grant from OC Community Foundation Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens has been awarded a $10,000 grant from Orange County Community Foundation San Clemente Arts & Culture Fund to further its cultural programming.

The merit-based grant was given to Casa Romantica because of the nonprofit’s efforts to foster an expansive community of culture, arts and education in South Orange County.

The Orange County Community Foundation matches charitable interests with the needs of the Orange County community, incubating new ideas and bringing leaders together. Since its inception, the Orange County Community Foundation has granted $330 million to deserving nonprofits.

Outlets to help sexual abuse survivors and their families.

Amanda Zarate, the executive director of the organization, will host a Warrior Festival at the July 30 event. Zarate plans to take the largest-ever group selfie in support of sexual abuse survivors.

The entrance fee to the festival, which will last from noon to 5 p.m., is $5. Online registration will include a raffle ticket. All proceeds will help Fighting for Me provide free professional counseling.

Fighting for Me created a campaign similar to the ALS challenge. The warpaint campaign gives people a chance to paint red on their faces and take selfies with hashtags such as “#worthfighting4.”

Along with the event, Zarate hopes to get support from the community to help encourage state legislation that would provide assistance to sexual abuse survivors.

San Clemente Local Makes Eagle Scout Rank The Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout rank was presented to Mitchell Rhine of San Clemente on July 12. As a member of Troop 113, Rhine’s Eagle Scout project was to build 20 nesting boxes for the California Bluebird Recovery Program, a statewide program that helps repopulate bluebirds and other cavity nesting birds.

As of today, there are 2,000 active nesting boxes in South Orange County. Mitchell has been a scout since first grade.

In sixth grade, he started moving up the ranks in Boy Scouts. Rhine is a sophomore at San Mitchell Rhine.

Call to Coexistence San Clemente Baha’i Center members look toward unity of religion

A

s the world continues a seemingly futile campaign of reconciliation among different religions, the San Clemente Baha’i Center members devote their time to uniting people of all faiths.

The Baha’i religion was constructed on the principals of uniting under spiritual beliefs, not necessary fundamental doctrine.

Badi Jeffers, a locally elected representative for the local Baha’is, said the center avoids fractured lines among the human race regarding spirituality.

“If religion is a cause of disunity, then it’s better to have no religion at all,” Jeffers said.

Mahdad Manavi, another locally elected representative, said when speaking to people with fundamentalist views, it’s better to pacify the situation by acknowledging their viewpoints, but it doesn’t help to argue. “(The Baha’i faith) says to deal with the followers of all religion in the utmost loving and kindest manner,” Manavi said.

“If you come from a hardcore religion and are adamant about your point, at that point I would say, ‘I respect your opinion.’ There is no point in arguing. We both believe in God, and let’s just stick with that. If all discussion about all opinions are going to cause disunity, then we stop.”

On Sundays, members gather to host “devotionals” in which they read a medley of religious scriptures from all religions.

“All religions are part of one process, a concept called progressive revelation whereby, every so often, we have a new divine teacher who meets the needs and capacities of the people,” Jeffers said.

Jeffers said that process has a common

thread of following God and spiritual worship.

Some of the devotional gatherings are held at private homes of the members of the center.

“If religious ideas cannot be explained through science, it’s superstition; it’s that strong,” Manviv said. “If the next world is spiritual, then the story that was told to the illiterate people thousands of years ago, this reward and punishment, was used to create fear.”

Manavi said the laws of spirituality have always stayed the same, yet civil law, the documents that establish nations and other political motives have altered the unification of religion.

The building that hosts the center was built in the 1960s and the Baha’is bought it in the early 1990s.

“Our aim is to make the center a place to provide service to the local community,” Manavi said. “We’ve been making (the center) more pleasant, appealing and practical so we can make it accessible to community events.”

Each month, the center hosts a program called Soul Food, which is set to background music and features writings from different philosophers and religious backgrounds.

“We’ve had atheists who say they’ve enjoyed the program,” Jeffers said. “If there’s someone in the community who is trying to offer a service to the community, we try to offer the center to them. We really believe it’s important to strengthen the community, the neighborhood and the world.”

Children’s classes are hosted to help strengthen spirituality, Jeffers said, and there are junior youth classes for ages 10 to 14.

On Sundays, people can drop in, whether it’s students who are writing a term paper about the Baha’i or whomever.

The center also hosts Toastmasters, an organization that teaches people public speaking skills.

Williams Sisters’ Achievements go Beyond the Baseline

G

rowing up in Southeast Los Angeles, I played basketball in high school. Our basketball coach was also the school’s tennis team coach. He suggested I try out for the tennis team.

For one whole year, I did nothing but bang a tennis ball at a handball backboard. Although I was a member of the tennis team, I never played on the courts that year.

The next year, I made it to the tennis courts. L.A.’s westside high schools had great tennis players. Eastside schools could barely find 10 guys who would play tennis. In my second year, I knew why I was recruited. By that time, my coach also knew that I would not be a second Pancho Gonzales, a well-known tennis pro.

Westside schools had so many good players that they played three to four schools at the same time and beat us all.

For example, I was the third singles player on my team. Against a westside school, I might play its 15th singles player while its third singles player would play some first singles player of another school. My many losses made me appreciate the sport and the dedication needed to be great.

So you shouldn’t be surprised that last Saturday morning, July 9, I watched the women’s Wimbledon singles and doubles finals on TV. Two of my favorite players, Serena and Venus Williams, were playing.

final, after defeating her sister, Venus in the semifinals. They paired up to play for the women’s doubles finals.

The young, black Williams sisters grew up in the city of Compton, California, a city notorious for producing gangs but not tennis players. The Williams sisters’ father taught them tennis and what it takes to be champions. His commitment and theirs eventually brought them success and victories over the best players in the world.

Both sisters have been ranked as No. 1 in world rankings and have won numerous tournaments. On Saturday, Serena won the singles title for her seventh time and earned $2.5 million for her effort. Later the same day, Serena and Venus won their sixth women’s doubles title at Wimbledon.

But these two sisters have done more than just win tennis tournaments. Initially, female players were viewed as a novelty.

Billie Jean King, a top women’s tennis player, argued that women should receive the same pay as the men’s players. Tournaments did not respond favorably. Venus Williams picked up the torch and met with The French Open and Wimbledon boards and argued for equal pay for female players. The response was the same.

Venus wrote a piece published in the Los Angeles Times explaining the unfairness to women under the present circumstances.

She gained support and the rules were

changed.

I love watching these two play. I admire them for their athleticism but also for their commitment to the sport and equality. They both have demonstrated they did THE VIEW not forget their dreams FROM THE PIER as young girls nor do

Serena said, “I have been given such a great opportunity. I have been given so much talent. I’ve been in the position where I can inspire ladies and men as well.

Anyone, any kid out there that wants to be something, has dreams. I’ve had great dreams. I didn’t come from any money or anything, but I did have a dream, and I did have hope. That’s really all you need.”

What simple words, but what a lesson in life. Today, girls and boys also have dreams that might sound impossible to achieve. Knowing what the Williams sisters achieved in their lifetime, I am compelled to encourage youth to pursue their dreams with hope and perseverance.

That’s the view from the pier.

Letters to the Editor FALSE IRS CALLS ARE A SCAM AUBREY BEAUCHAMP, Capistrano Beach

We all get unsolicited phone calls, many pre-recorded. People are eager to get us a new hearing aid, plan our funeral, help us with our finances, etc. It’s easy to ignore these calls as we get similar ones in the mail, e-mail and dropped at our doorsteps.

People want to paint, clean, remodel or sell our home and maintain our yard. All these are honest and legal attempts by folks who need a job.

However, recently I found a message, repeated three times in one day, on my answering machine. A stern, intimidating woman’s voice announced: “Hello, this call is officially a final notice from IRS—the Internal Revenue Service.

The reason for this call is to inform you that the IRS has filed a lawsuit against you.

To get more information about this case file, please call immediately on our department, number 410.698.8401.”

It was bogus, of course, and I did not call. Scare tactics are nothing new. However, this message was not only a blatant lie; it was also threatening, intimidating and impersonating a government agency.

That, to me, is going too far. Next call we hear on the phone may be a bomb threat.

VACATION RENTAL PROFITEERS FILE LAWSUIT JOE JANIS, LISA GASKIN AND LAUREN CRAMER, San Clemente

A few months ago, two citizen groups (“Protect Our Neighborhoods” and “Take Action San Clemente”) walked San Clemente neighborhoods with a petition to ban short-term lodging units and sober living homes from residential zoned

areas. The results were overwhelming, as 94 percent of those petitioned were adamantly against these businesses operating in our residential neighborhoods. The San Clemente City Council supported our city residents and passed ordinances to limit vacation rentals and sober living homes to areas of town that would be more compatible for them.

Now, the vacation rental owners and sober living operators are using other tactics to continue operating in our neighborhoods. A group called “The San Clemente Vacation Rental Alliance” has recently filed a lawsuit against the city of San Clemente and our City Council for passing these ordinances. The lawsuit states that the alliance “is an association composed of and supported by individuals devoted to preservation of the environment and Coastal Zone resources…” It also states “the group (among other things) was organized for the purpose of representing the interests of the public in assuring compliance with

SOAPBOX the state’s environmental and land use laws and the Coastal Act.” Believe it or not, that is their spin. They do not mention that they want to use our neighborhoods as doormats for their hotels and boarding houses. Many of their supporters do not even live in San Clemente.

This same group is also behind the push to re-district our city. You may have seen them at our local markets. The “Alliance” actually hired people to gather signatures to put redistricting on the November ballot. This group is well funded and well organized. Make no mistake about it, “The San Clemente Vacation Rental Alliance” does not represent the interests of San Clemente residents, but with special interest money they have a good chance of ousting the very Council members that have voted to keep our neighborhoods safe. They believe if they are successful in redistricting San Clemente they can get their people elected who will overturn the ordinances that have banned short-term lodging units and sober living homes from our residential neighborhoods.

The San Clemente Vacation Rental Alliance is not a friend of “Our Spanish Village by the Sea.” They are profiteers that want to operate their commercial businesses in our residential neighborhoods, regardless of the effects they have on them. They continue to attack the four Council members who have voted to keep our neighborhoods safe and to preserve our way of life. Thanks again to Mayor Bob Baker, Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Ward, Councilman Chris Hamm and Councilman Tim Brown for standing up to this special interest group.

We believe residential neighborhoods are safe-havens for families to live and to raise children. We cannot remain silent while groups like this try to change the very character of the neighborhoods in which we reside. Help us spread the word about this special interest group and their plans for San Clemente. CUSD CANNOT BE TRUSTED WITH ANOTHER LARGE BOND LAURA FERGUSON, San Clemente

In response to the June 30-July 6 article in the San Clemente Times, “CUSD Leans Toward Districtwide Bond Rather than Separate Regional Bonds,” I, too, attended this June 22 meeting where the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees held yet another lengthy bond discussion. The reason for the third meeting, which included a special workshop, is because CUSD has yet to justify why it needs $1 billion for deferred maintenance.

As a property owner in San Clemente’s Mello-Roos district who experienced CUSD’s over-taxation and misuse of Talega’s special taxes and as someone who fought alongside fellow taxpayers to remedy major abuses, allow me to share San Clemente Times July 14-20, 2016

my top 10 reasons why taxpayers should vote “no” on CUSD’s billion-dollar bailout this November.

1. Mismanagement of public funds.

2. History of over-taxation/mishandling of Mello-Roos.

3. Failure to be transparent.

4. Lack of trust.

5. No accountability.

6. Inadequate public outreach.

7. Rushing its bond proposal.

8. Increased salaries/pension costs for four consecutive years at the expense of facilities repairs, smaller class sizes and programs for the children.

9. Little is known on what facilities improvements will actually cost because no bids were sought for “sample” projects.

10. CUSD receives funding for its $430 million budget every year. Why hasn’t any of this money been set aside to fix facilities?

11. Lying to taxpayers to minimize the size of the bond by not admitting the interest charges. When CUSD says the bond is $889 million—the real cost of the bond, including the interest you have to pay is double the face value—$1.778 billion.

That’s more than 10, which shows how the reasons for not trusting CUSD with more of our tax dollars are vast. Please beware of the district’s bond campaign about to get underway. At the last board meeting one of the trustees talked about how the district would need to drop some serious money on mailers. The money, the manpower, the messaging—it will take the form of door knocks, phone calls and mail pieces. Don’t be fooled. Vote “no” this November on the billion dollar bailout of failed leadership at CUSD.

Brexistential Union Blues: England May Find Itself Neither United Nor Great

T

he United Kingdom’s dramatic departure from the European Union was unexpected, but certainly the fears and resentments that fueled it were not. Anti-immigration alarm, xenophobia and distrust in elected government are on the rise everywhere; and much of the trepidation is understandable.

The interesting question about Britain’s exit from the EU is what is not being asked. News coverage is primarily focused on how the Brits will fare and how the rest of Europe will deal with them. Whether the British will do better or worse is not critical; they are a plucky, resourceful lot, no doubt they will continue “muddling through,” as Englishmen describe their strongest WAVELENGTHS virtue. Nonetheless,

By Jim Kempton there is a huge risk involved in the decision to leave: the United Kingdom—Great Britain—may find itself neither united nor great.

If a defiant Scotland and Northern Ireland (who both voted overwhelmingly to stay in) maintain their EU statuses, the UK will be splintered; no longer able to control their most porous borders—those just to the north of them in their own islands. What if Britain is not able to create the better deal Brexit proponents assume?

Should recession or worse befall their nation they now have nowhere to turn.

If Britannia negotiates better deals by being out of the EU, (as the proponents of secession argue) would not Greece, Spain, Portugal, Slovakia and Croatia consider renegotiating their deals—debts that if they were defaulted could crash the entire world economy? Not a good scenario for the U.S. The real worry is how this departure affects the rest of the world—the one Britain used to help lead. Removing itself from the open, friendly, unified Europe could easily destabilize a vulnerable international marketplace where progress in economic growth buttresses democratic institutions like rule of law and elected representatives.

A worldwide financial collapse would batter America—and we would have little ability to control the damage. Of course the U.S. may initially benefit from increased instability since historically other nations have put their money in a safe place called America. But a world in amplified chaos is hardly what our nation needs.

Imagine South America, Asia and Africa with the volatility of the Middle East.

Interestingly, three-fourths of young people under 24 years of age voted to stay with Europe while two-thirds of those over 65 voted to leave. In fact, the measure did not have majority with any voters below the age of 65. So the retired geriatrics sold the next generation a future they don’t want. The old folks will only briefly inhabit this new deal and will more than likely not suffer the inevitable longterm downside of their caprice.

England’s older generation chose to remove themselves from pragmatic responsibility of our fragile global market on the assumption that they will have more for themselves. It is not only a risky bet; it is a selfish position from one of the world’s leading nations for over three centuries.

British institutions brought Western values to much of the planet. Before the U.S., they were the world’s foremost superpower.

The unalterable reality is that we are now a global village, like it or not. Lamentably, one of the strongest leaders just took their ball and went home.

Many in the U.S. are calling for the same action here. No one would consider us great for doing so. The world would not be a safer place, the U.S. would not be a stronger nation, the economies of our partners would not be more stable. But in a social order where fear, narcissism, selfishness, ignorance, greed and resentment seem to be the reigning virtues, it would not surprise anyone.

T

here are comedies that feel confident enough to be raunchy and graphic, and still have a lot of heart and a good sense of humor, such as Sixteen Candles (1984) and Superbad (2007). And then there are comedies that aren’t naturally funny and attempt to make it up by being as crude as possible, like Dirty Grandpa and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. Both movies feature Zac Efron and Aubrey Plaza, and both lack any genuine humor.

After creating such a bad reputation for crashing parties, reunions and weddings in the most exaggerated ways, Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave Stangle (Efron) are forced to bring respectable dates to their sister Jeanie’s (Sugar Lyn Beard) wedding or they can’t join the celebration.

Party girls Alice (Anna Kendrick) and Tatiana (Plaza) have recently lost their waitressing jobs and are willing to put on a good act to get a free trip to Hawaii as Mike’s and Dave’s dates.

Stephen Root and Stephanie Faracy play Mr. and Mrs. Stangle. Mike and Dave was written by the same guys who gave us both scripts for the Neighbors movies. While the first Neighbors was a pretty decent comedy, all three movies generally rely too much on gross, over-the-top jokes about drugs and sex. On top of that, many jokes simply aren’t delivered very well in Mike and Dave. Which is surprising, since Devine and Plaza are trained comic actors. As for Kendrick and Efron, maybe it’s time to try musicals again. SC www.sanclementetimes.com

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, and our amazing San Clemente lifeguards celebrate their 85th anniversary, we are reminded of how the San Clemente Ocean Festival came to life and reflect on what continues to make it “The Greatest Show on Surf”!

Prior to 1976, the Orange County Lifeguard Games was solely dedicated to lifeguard competitions. San Clemente’s Marine Safety Captain wanted to increase the involvement of the games to include the general public and provide activities that included family-oriented fun, on the beach and in the water.

The theme of this event—families and lifeguards engaged together in fun activities on the beach—has been the basis of the success of the Ocean Festival, and has kept it unique and beyond imitation. The San Clemente Ocean Festival is run by a volunteer board of directors and their executive, athletic and surf directors who pool their talents to continue to deliver “The Greatest Show on Surf” with the hundreds of community volunteers who provide manpower during the two-day event.

The slogan “the Greatest Show on Surf” was first created in 1978. In 1981, the Ocean Festival’s logo was certified as a trademark, and the following year the San Clemente Ocean Festival became a 501(c)(4) nonprofit corporation.

Come join us for this two-day event and see for yourself what sets us apart from all others! Saturday hosts the action and excitement of the National Doryman Association’s twoman lifeguard boat races that start and end on the beach with courses that take them through pounding surf, while trying to avoid the other teams as they race to the finish line. Saturday includes a Stand-Up Paddleboard contest sponsored by Hobie Surf Shop, and join us Sunday for the “Groms Rule” Surf Contest (girls 12 and younger, and boys 14 and younger). Love to run? Join us for the 5K Beach Run on Sunday, or if you prefer swimming, we have a one-mile ocean swim, and many other competitions in and out of the water where you can test your athletic abilities.

Car enthusiasts can check out the Woodie Car Exhibit on the Pier (15 different cars each day), where you can see lovingly salvaged and restored wood-sided wagons, each with their own style and character. Into fishing? There will be a

fishing derby and clinic for all ages on Saturday, sponsored by Dana Wharf Sportfishing. Don’t forget to stop by the Ocean Art Show that stretches along Parque Del Mar, both north and south of the beach entrance—you’ll surely find your own treasure to take home with you as a remembrance of the great time you had at the event.

Coming with the family? Head south of the Pier to the Youth Pavilion that will be packed with crafts, games, and face painting as well as demonstrations and performances for all ages to enjoy. Saturday there will be a Dolphin Dash kid’s beach run for ages 12 and younger, sponsored by Clif Kid, and all participants will receive an Ocean Festival medallion. And, if you’re not sure about riding the waves yourself, stop by the Body Surfing clinics just south of the Youth Pavilion and learn how to body surf. On Sunday you can register to compete in the Sand Sculpting competitions, or walk by and check out the entries around noon.

Entrance is free! Food will be available for purchase starting with a pancake breakfast—hot off the griddle—north of the Pier. This is a major fundraiser for our San Clemente Lifeguards. The Fisherman’s Restaurant will also have their food booths on the beach. On Friday and Saturday evenings, enjoy our free concerts, featuring The Eliminators on Friday and Gary Roach’s Stones Review on Saturday, sponsored by The Sheckler Foundation, as the sun sets on the horizon for the perfect ending to the day. Our grand finale for the weekend is the ever-popular Great Rubber Duck Race on Sunday. Fishing Derby Reeled In. Started by Don and Shirley Stanley, the contest now awards winners in “game fish” and shark and ray categories. Paul Jessup has been running it since 2010, and the Dana Wharf Sportfishing staff has co-hosted the event since 2013.

Duck Race Lands at Ocean Festival: The Great Rubber Duck Race was started by lifeguards, who then handed it over to San Clemente Ocean Festival as part of their fundraising for the event.

Woodie Car Exhibit Rolls In: The iconic woodie car got an exhibition at the Festival. The original committee included Board Member Char Bailey, Volunteer Gary Button and Woody Car enthusiast Dave Doherty. Jim Nielsen took it over in 2015.

1995

Local Art Gets Showcase. First coordinated by Steve Breyer; Jim and Sue Krogle from 2000 to 2012; Sharyn Evert 2013 to 2014; and Rachelle Liberty 2015 to present.

2001

Bodysurfing Clinics in Session. The San Clemente Body Surfing Club ran clinics from 2001 to 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 to present. They take place this year on Saturday.

2004

Groms Take the Waves. The Kids Klassic Surf Kontest, later changed to “Grom’s Rule” Surf Contest in 2007, gives young surfers a chance to compete.

2008

Stand Up and Paddleboard. The stand-up paddleboard competitions begin. The championships are back again for 2016, with judges declaring winners based on style.

Running like a… Dolphin? The fourth annual Dolphin Dash kid’s run welcomes all young runners in half-mile, three-quarter-mile, and one-mile races.

Battl� o� th� Wave� The doryman’s race is a unique and exciting competition

It started out as a necessity for lifeguarding, but dory boat racing has now turned into a unique sporting competition—and one that returns to Ocean Festival this year as a crowd favorite.

The dory boat is a small vessel with high walls and a flat bottom. In competitions, it is manned by two people, a bowman and a sternman. The bowman is the strategic driver of the boat, while the sternman is more of the muscle and also typically gets out to run ashore, as is customary in competition.

Dick DeBoer has competed in dory boat race competitions since he started lifeguarding at Huntington State Beach in 1983. He views the Ocean Festival doryman’s race as the jewel of the sport’s triple crown—Catalina and the National Championships are the only other races that rival Ocean Fest’s prestige.

“Ocean Fest is always the best crowd, even better than Nationals because you just have the whole atmosphere, you have the Pier. The Pier is packed, and it’s such a long tradition with dorys and the Ocean Fest,” DeBoer said.

The crowd also recognizes the difficulty associated with dory boat racing, DeBoer said.

“The experience is like no other in lifeguard competition because you’re out of the water and you’re rowing a boat backward, a 300-pound dory, in and out of the surf with other boats going opposite directions at times,” DeBoer said.

Being a longtime veteran of the competition is a benefit, DeBoer said, because it is only with experience that a racer picks up how to ride waves, transition the boat and when to take it easy in the exhausting competition.

“I think what a regular bystander wouldn’t realize is just we make it look easy and that comes from years of training and years of knowledge and being in the boat,” DeBoer said. “The average person, to be able to get in a boat and row it straight, that would be something that would be hard in itself.”

DeBoer says he trains with his partners about three or four times a week ahead of competitions. He’s changed partners over the years, and this year will be working with Jose Bolivar, a two-time National champion.

Picking the right partner, and getting on the same page with him or her, is a challenge in itself, DeBoer said.

“The most important thing is knowing who your partner is, and you’re kind of working in a symbiotic relationship. There’s communication but very little, because once you have a good partner, you know what to do, you don’t have to say much,” he said.

If you want to check out DeBoer and others take on the field, head down to the Pier at 11:15 a.m. and then at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and get a good seat—it’ll be a great show.

Sixth annual paddleboard contest is a welcoming event

The stand-up paddleboard competition seems like an event that is so obvious for the Ocean Festival. It’s an inclusive sport that welcomes beginners and experts, and gets people of all ages out on the water in a fun environment. That is, it’s much like the festival itself. The paddleboard competition is now its sixth year, and features dozens of competitors of all abilities and age levels. The only requirement is that participants have a board, a paddle and a leash. Boarders will hit the waves north of the Pier for an all-day battle.

It’s a judged competition, and boarders’ scores are based off of how they handle progressive and classic maneuvers and styles. Use of the paddle on the wave is also part of the judging criteria. Competition groups are divided into older mens’ (40 and older), younger men’s (39 and younger) and open women’s.

Awards will be given out to competitors who finish in the top six spots in their respective divisions. Competitions run all day on Saturday, with day-of signups available at 6 a.m. (pending availability). The contests start at 7 a.m., and a final awards ceremony will be conducted at 4 p.m.

Mermaids Become “A Part Of Our World”

With King Triton taking a rest this year, mermaids are taking over the Ocean Festival.

Kelly Garrett, 15, and Kelley Green, 16, will be making a splash as the stars of the Mermaid Parade on Sunday, July 17, at 9 a.m.

Garrett is returning for her second year as a part of the Mermaid Parade. As a sophomore at the Orange County School of the Arts, Garrett intends to continue her studies in theater arts, hoping to one day become a Disney Princess at the Disneyland Resort.

This will be the first year in which King Triton will not be in attendance. Instead Garrett will be joined by a new mermaid, Kelley Green. Green is a junior at San Juan Hills High School, and intends to pursue acting and modeling in college.

Green was recognized by the city of San Clemente by winning the Junior Dorothy Fuller Award at age 12. “I was so honored when I received the award, and my mom, Lisa Green, received the award two years later making us a mother-daughter duo in receiving the same prestigious award.”

With there being two mermaids instead of one, “I think it is going to be more playful since we are both around the same age, and we can both go off each other,” Garrett said.

As an experienced mermaid, Garrett said the best tip she could give to girls playing this role would be to “let the kids guide you.

Know that no one else is judging you for dressing up like a mermaid and having fun.

You have to let yourself shine and have fun with it.”

Lucy Schwien was the mastermind behind Garrett’s costume.

“Lucy hand-stitched all of the pearls onto the costume herself. We collaborated with fabrics for the tail and she sewed all of them onto it perfectly,” Garrett said.

Green found her costume at one of the oldest costume shops in Orange County, called Gasoline Alley.

The best part about being a mermaid, Garrett said, is the size of the smiles on children’s faces from a simple wave. Green is excited for the same reason.

“I usually help send the children off and welcome them back to the Youth Pavilion Stage. This year will be special because I will actually be walking the Pier with them,” Green said.

Some of the children innocently try to stump the actresses, but Garrett’s talent allows her to be quick on her feet. The most asked question is pretty understandable: “How are you walking?” To which Garrett responds, “Ursula owed me a favor.”

“We all need a little magic in our lives,” Green said, “I am just one of King Triton’s daughters visiting San Clemente for the 40th anniversary of the Ocean Festival.

After it’s over, I will be returning to my kingdom in the sea. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!”

Both of these beautiful mermaids intend to be making San Clemente smile at many Ocean Fests in the years to come.

EXTRA CONCERT ADDED TO OCEAN FESTIVAL SCHEDULE An additional concert date has been added to the Ocean Festival schedule, from 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 15, featuring The Eliminators, a surf music band from San Clemente.

Another concert will take place 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, featuring Gary Roach’s Stones Revue, a tribute band to the Rolling Stones. The surf band The Eliminators will start the festivities of this year’s Ocean Festival. “This is our way of saying thank you to our community for the many years of support for ‘The Greatest Show on Surf,’” a press release from the Ocean Festival Foundation stated.

In addition to the concert, Fisherman’s Restaurant and Bar will be serving dinners on the beach, and people will be able to purchase collector merchandise and rubber ducks.

WOODIE CARS ARE ICONIC AND ON DISPLAY AT THE OCEAN FESTIVAL

Somewhere along the way, the “woodie” became an icon of Southern California. It’s no wonder then that the car will be on full display for the 24th consecutive year at the Ocean Festival this year. Gary Clark, of the Southern California Woodie Club, said over a dozen of the club’s members will be making the trip to San Clemente to show off their woodpaneled cars. But the love affair that the region has with the style goes back decades.

“It started back in the ’60s,” Clark said. “For the surfers, this was the cheapest, best vehicle that we could find to take our surfboards to the beach. They were only $200, some of them.”

Soon, the woodie became an active part of the act of surfing, Clark said.

“We’d take the backseats out and throw those away and then sleep in there at the beach waiting for the sun to come up,” he said. “We’d sometimes get tot he beach at 4 or 5 (a.m.) and sleep until the morning.”

The woodie itself came to be way before it took off in California, though. In 1925, Henry Ford bought 760,000 acres of maple tree forest to use for the bodies of his cars, Clark said.

That special modeling has made the woodie design unique by modern standards. But combined with the design falling out of favor after the ’60s, it also made the car a pricey collectible—one sought after by baby boomers in the last few decades who want a piece of SoCal nostalgia.

“There was a resurgence in the desire for the cars, and of course they started going up in price. Pretty soon (a woodie) needing complete restoration was $10-15,000 (to start), and then by the time you were done, you had $100-150,000 and so the cars became quite pricey,” said Clark, who owns Woodies USA, a woodie retailer in Laguna Niguel.

But assuming you don’t want to fork over the dough to own one, you can check out the woodies at the Ocean Festival from 8:30 a.m.-2:45 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Pier.

Clark says the reaction from people who view his group’s shows is always the same.

“It’s very seldom you’ll see a frown associated with someone meeting a woodie wagon,” he said. “People are giving us the thumbs up and the shaka sign. Everybody loves these cars, and everybody has a story.”

Local artists and artisans share their wares at Parque Del Mar

With all of the recreational activities that Ocean Festival has to offer, folks might not realize that the celebration also includes an exceptional local arts gallery. And it makes sense to marry art with the festival—since time immemorial, the two have complemented each other in celebrations. In fact, early versions of the Olympic Games featured as many exhibitions in art and culture as there were in sports and recreation.

This year, the Art Show has grown to feature 40 local artists—all from California, and most from Orange County. Each artist has a booth in which to discuss, display and sell their work. The media of art includes jewelry, paintings, sculpture, installations, photography, rugs, soaps and more.

“It’s such an eclectic show with so many different things,” said Rachelle Liberty, the Art Show organizer for the past several years. “Everything has an ocean theme. And it’s just a really intimate vendor, because most art shows have hundreds of artists and ours has at the most 40.”

Liberty is not only organizing the show, but will also display her work with succulents and driftwood.

With nearly double the number of the artists participating, this year’s art show will also bring in talent and pieces that attendees of past Ocean Festival’s have yet to see. Liberty says this balance of local favorites and newcomers will be attractive to folks passing through the show.

The Art Show grounds will be on the

grassy area next to the Pier, and each artist will have a 10-by-10-foot booth.

This year, Liberty says the layout of the art area will flow better than before, and encourage passersby to see a whole lot of local art in a casual setting.

And as an artist herself, Liberty says the Ocean Festival is a unique opportunity to chat with patrons and get a lot of attention on artists’ work.

“It’s just amazing to be one of 40 vendors with such a huge crowd of people coming through, because usually you sit and wait for people to come through,” she said.

The Art Show will run from 9-6 p.m. on Saturday, and 9-5 p.m. on Sunday. The location is Parque Del Mar, south of the beach tunnel, and which overlooks the festival.

Sound waves from Charlie Ware’s voice rolling over the massive crowds has been a natural part of Ocean Festival since its beginning.

After 40 years of being the announcer, Ware said he’s ready to pass the torch. This will be his final year.

Ware was part of the original group that put together Ocean Festival.

“I was a Laguna Beach lifeguard between the mid-’60s and the early ’70s, and they started getting into lifeguard competitions along the coast: stand-up paddleboarding, dorey racing, swimming,” Ware said. “The San Clemente lifeguards were just starting to get into that too. Sheraton Birely, who was the chief lifeguard, contacted our lifeguard captain for a friendly competition.”

The competition started to gather interest with barbecues and refreshments at Old Man’s at San Onofre State Beach.

Ware said they would rush down there after everyone got off work. The next year, they decided to move their competitions to the San Clemente Pier.

“We invited more lifeguards, and they called it the Orange

County Lifeguard Games,” Ware said. “Sheraton was trying to get everyone organized because the sun was going down, and none of the guys were really paying attention.

So, he had a bull horn and I just happened to be standing next to him.

“He says, ‘Here, see if you can get them organized.’ So I grabbed the bull horn and got everyone going. I just stood there with the bull horn in between the events I would do.”

Although he’s not sure what grabbed everyone’s attention, Ware unintentionally became Ocean Festival’s first announcer. The next year it became organized as a nonprofit event. Dorothy Fuller, another founding member of the event, told Ware they wanted to open the events up to the community.

“And Ocean Fest was born from 1976 and that point on,” Ware said. “It’s been wonderful ever since.”

Ware set up a PA system on the Pier, setting up in the corner of The Fisherman’s Restaurant. He said he would announce results and upcoming events all at the restaurant.

“It got really crowded, and it got voiceful, and it got rowdy,” Ware said. “So finally we set up on the beach and really expanded it.”

Over the past 40 years, Ware said Ocean Festival has been the epitome of “real beach fun.”

“Coming down here every year, all that beach activity and the culture that exists here, Ocean Fest embodies that,” he said. “If I could keep coming down here and continue to be a small part of it in anyway, that’s what made summer for me. It didn’t feel like summer until I was at the Ocean Festival.”

Ware is leaving his position on a round number.

“I thought 40 is a good year,” Ware said. “It’s one of those things where I thought there was a need for some young infusion. My style has always been to be more informative, to provide that steady announcement. It’s a style, but there’s also a need for a bit of color and excitement and comedy. I think it’s time for someone like that to take over.”

Ware said he will still continue to come to Ocean Festival.

“If it weren’t for the great volunteers and Peggy Vance and her crew and her team to make it so easy on us and make it run smooth, it just makes it so fun to be here,” he said. “The next announcer has to meet the expectations and make sure that everything is running, and they also have to enjoy themselves while they’re here.”

In 1992, Dianna Botello, then-executive director of the Ocean Festival Foundation, was looking for a new design for the event’s T-shirts.

Artist Bob Harlow drew her a sketch on a napkin of something that encompassed Ocean Festival’s unique qualities, and it earned him a permanent position as the designer for the festival’s merchandise.

“I’ve always done art, but in the ’70s I was the representative for Ocean Pacific,” Harlow said. “In the ’80s, I was a store manager for Hobie Surf Shop. But I started doing artwork for the stores, and then Quicksilver and Billabong contacted me.”

Harlow does designs for the navy blue and white Tshirts for the events. A trademark of his shirts is the beachgoing dolphin, which can be seen in each design. This year he dedicated the design of the white shirts to the 85th anniversary of San Clemente Lifeguards, but the dolphin can be seen in the background.

“I come up with a couple concepts and show it to the executive director, but it’s basically up to me,” Harlow said.

“I sometimes call them in for ideas, try to make it a little different, but it’s really a delicate dance.”

In addition to the T-shirts, Harlow also does the designs for the visors, ball caps and other memorabilia, and he runs the social media and designs advertisements for the festival.

Between 6,000 and 12,000 merchandise items are made for the festival each year, depending on the sponsorship opportunities. Harlow said before he took over designs, only a few dozen shirts were manufactured.

Are Parents ‘Praise Junkies?’

M

any articles I read about praising children point out that most parents are “praise junkies.” I have to admit that a quick look on Facebook seems to confirm this; however I do not believe parents should abandon praising children-instead parents need to be mindful about how they use praise. Research supports that praising the child in place of the process risks limiting growth, leaving kids vulnerable to a fear of failure. Praising the process encourages children to try new things, to accept challenges and to develop a growth oriented mind-set.

1. Focus on the effort not the outcome. It is human instinct to stick to the activities we are good at and to avoid those WELLNESS AND that take more effort.

PREVENTION

By Susan The danger in this for Parmelee youth is that they become unwilling to try more challenging activities. This may lead to the child developing negative self-thoughts like, “I am no good in math” and therefore they’re unwilling to try higher level math classes. By telling your child, “You worked very hard with your algebra tutor and now you seem to understand the assignment better,” you are praising the process, not the score on the next test. This reinforces a child’s ability to learn by trying harder and putting forth extra effort.

2. Be specific. I read a story about a mom who when observing her daughter’s pride in tying her shoes for the first time replied, “You are so smart!” The child then proceeded to take off her shoes and retie them waiting for more glowing words of praise about her intelligence. This behavior loop might have repeated itself had the mom not then changed the statement to, “Thank you, now that you know how to tie your shoes we will get to the park

much faster.” The direct comment on the benefits of mastering a new skill, pointed out the tangible results, encouraging the child’s growing independence.

3. Be genuine. Researchers report that by age 12, children scrutinize words of praise for truth and hidden agendas. The statement, “You were so patient teaching your brother how to play that video game.

It must have been hard for you to spend time with him instead of your friends,” alerts your child to the fact that you truly appreciate a sacrifice your child made for the benefit of the family. If you said, “Jenny you are the nicest person I know,” she would most likely be skeptical of your statement and there is not as much of a chance that she might repeat the time spent with her brother.

4. Instead of direct praise, try to observe and comment. When praise is handed out in generalizations—such as, “You are the best baseball player on the team,” a child may not feel inspired to keep trying to improve skills. Instead try, “You practiced catching fly-balls with dad for a whole week and then you made a catch in the outfield.”

When parents praise the qualities behind successes and failures—resilience, hardwork, and perseverance—they reinforce a growth mind-set that encourages self-esteem and exploration. Praising techniques like these helps children try new things, take healthy risks and achieve goals.

All Eyes on Jack Sears Following Elite 11 Top uncommitted quarterback narrows down his list of college suitors after jam-packed week

t has come down to Duke, UCLA, USC and Utah.

Those are the four colleges San Clemente High School’s soon-to-be senior quarterback Jack Sears is looking at the closest, in no particular order. His decision on where he will attend and play college ball is coming soon.

Sears, considered to be the top uncommitted high school signal caller on the West Coast, has received 20 offers from major college programs and says he has narrowed his list down to a final four as the fall football season approaches. Sears said via email that he wants to narrow his list down even more this weekend and make his final decision within two weeks.

Sears, and his recruitment, was under a microscope last week while competing in the Elite 11 quarterback competition as part of Nike’s The Opening in Beaverton, Oregon. Sears advanced to The Opening after making the cut at the Elite 11 finals in June.

The Opening is among the most highprofile prep football events in the country, and features current and former NFL and collegiate football players serving as coaches and mentors for the week. The camp is run by former NFL quarterback and current ESPN personality Trent Dilfer. Sears, along with 11 other top prep quarterbacks, spent the week learning offensive systems and competed in a 7-on-7 passing tournament to cap off the event.

Sears’ recruitment remained one of the more intriguing storylines throughout the week. Of the 12 quarterbacks invited to the event, Sears was the only uncommitted player in the group.

There are plenty of reasons why so many top-flight programs offered him scholarships.

Sears, who is 6-foot-3 and weighs 200 pounds, used an impressive junior campaign as a springboard into a busy offseason.

Sears threw for 2,697 yards and 37 touchdowns to just two interceptions as a junior at San Clemente. He also ran for 862 yards and nine touchdowns and led the Tritons to the CIF-SS Southwest Division Championship game.

With his stock as a potential top collegiate prospect on the rise, Sears headed to the Elite 11 Los Angeles regional event in June with the hopes of earning a spot in the Elite 11 finals. He did not receive an invite in Los Angeles and, rather than give up on the hopes of reaching the finals, traveled to an Elite 11 regional in Oakland, where he stood out and landed an invite.

In the Elite 11 finals, Sears flashed his ability as a pocket passer and sharp decision maker. He passed every physical and mental challenge the camp threw at him, which included grueling beach workouts and mock professional interviews.

“The best part (of Elite 11) was being around the high-level coaches, learning more about the X’s and O’s and getting trained on the mental aspect of the game,” Sears said. “There was a lot of off the field sessions that focused on mental toughness and the responsibility that comes along with being a college quarterback.”

Now that he is done with The Opening, Sears is gearing up for his final season of high school football.

When news of his commitment does break, one program will rejoice while the other three will frantically re-shuffle their agendas. No matter what choice he makes, Sears can rely on the past month and know that he will excel on the gridiron in whatever jersey he is wearing.

“There was no feeling of pressure for me at (Elite 11) as I knew that I had won just by making it to Beaverton,” Sears said. “I left there knowing that, without a doubt, I belonged there and could hang with the best of the best.” SC www.sanclementetimes.com

outhern California skateboarding fans will get to check out some of the best skaters in the world next week as the Dew Tour comes to the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center for an action-packed three-day extravaganza July 22-24.

Headlining the impressive list of 40 skaters will be San Clemente’s Ryan Sheckler, a 12-time winner on the Dew Tour. San Clemente native Greyson Fletcher, San Juan Capistrano’s Nyjah Huston, Sean Malto, Ryan Decenzo and Micky Papa are also scheduled to compete.

The individual professional contests, which feature multiple skate zones that emphasize different styles, will take place on July 23.

The final day of competition will feature the Dew Tour’s Team Challenge, which is a new element added for the summer season. On July 24, nine teams consisting of 36 pro skaters will battle against each

Sheckler, who has been competing on the Dew Tour since 2005, will skate for Plan B, along with Chris Cole, Chris Joslin and Jagger Eaton. Huston and Fletcher will skate for Element, alongside Evan Smith and Mason Silva.

The Dew Tour stop in Long Beach will also feature a Long Beach Community Day and a screening of two films on July 22, and rappers Action Bronson and E-40 will headline a concert following the day’s activities on July 23. A free pop-up public skate park and technology experience that features virtual reality will be open to the public all weekend.

for Soldiers has become famous for providing teams the chance to compete in one of 24 one-hour games.

One of the highlights of last year’s Shootout for Soldiers event in Dana Point was a game between active-duty soldiers and veterans. The event raised $23,975, which was added to the program’s nationwide total of $408,931 raised in 2015.

Proceeds raised at the event will directly benefit Shootout for Soldiers’ four national charities as well as two California-based charities, the United States Veterans Initiative and Team Rubicon.

Waves of Wisdom Q&A with SC Ocean Fest legend Mitch Kahn

T

he dory boat races have been an anticipated and glorified event at the San Clemente Ocean Festival for the past 40 years. Mitch Kahn has competed in every installment of the festival’s dory races, except in 1991 when he was kayaking for the United States at the Pan American games in Cuba.

The fire captain, lifeguard, water polo coach, former Olympic athlete and San Clemente native has close ties with the community and is regarded as one of its top waterman.

This year, however, Kahn will be sitting among the crowd for just the second time in his career as he watches from the beach during the Ocean Festival on July 16.

Mitch Kahn The San Clemente Times caught up with Kahn to pick his brain on what it takes to master the dory boats in advance of this weekend’s events.

San Clemente Times: How far have you come in terms of experience from your first dory boat race to now?

Mitch Kahn: I’ve come quite a ways.

Lots of the dory boat racers are older because it takes a while to get that race experience. There’s a lot that goes into it besides just being the fastest and strongest boat. One thing about the race is that the fastest doesn’t always win, and there’s so much decision-making during the race.

It’s all about making those split-second decisions.

What’s the hardest skill to master in dory racing?

Coming in on a wave would for sure be the hardest because it takes a lot of teamwork to keep the boat straight. You want to try to place your boat in the right spot because a lot of times people are coming in when you’re going out and they can take you out and ram you. That’s kind of why everybody loves the dory races.

It’s kind of like the gladiators of the surf or a crash-cart derby because 20-foot long, 300-pound boats are going to crash into each other no matter how well you can steer.

It seems dangerous. Have you ever been seriously injured?

I’ve been hurt a few times, luckily nothing serious but the boat has flipped in really shallow water and been on top of me. Nothing has broken, but I’ve had a lot of bruises and bumps and pulled muscles.

How competitive do the races get?

Super competitive. There’s a whole dory circuit up the coast of California with usually 8-10 stops. We form rivalries and the more dominant crew usually varies year-to-year.

Do you have any advice for participants in this year’s race or future racers?

The beach is an amphitheater atmosphere, so you have to get some races under your belt before you show up in San Clemente. Because the Pier is there, you have to be a solid rower or you could destroy your boat on the Pier if you’re not rowing correctly. Most of the race is won or lost from the beach to the surf line, so that’s a good part to be proficient at.

How will it feel to watch instead of compete this year?

That’s going to be real tough because I’m so competitive. he 2016 Surfing Walk of Fame honorees were announced recently, with two locals named as inductees.

Lorrin “Whitey” Harrison, of Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano, and Mary Lou McGinnis Drummy, of San Clemente, will be inducted into the Walk of Fame at a ceremony on July 28 in Huntington Beach.

Both surfers paved wide roads for future generations to follow.

Harrison was an early pioneer of the sport. Born in Garden Grove in 1913, he grew up drawn to the water and went body surfing in Laguna Beach. When he was in grade school, Harrison built a 5-foot-long plank to ride the waves, and eventually upgraded to a white pine board that he shared with friends.

In 1933, Harrison was among the first surfers at San Onofre, and also took trips to Hawaii (which was a big deal at the time) to surf—and then to live.

Eventually, Harrison came back to Southern California and inherited an adobe home in San Juan Capistrano from his second wife’s grandmother. The house was known as a “hide house” where hides were originally stored between early ship arrivals. On the property is a famous barn where Harrison completed and stored many of his redwood surfboards, paddleboards and outrigger canoes. The barn was later converted into a surfboard shop where Harrison continued to shape rental boards and complete other surf-related projects. Harrison died of a heart attack in 1993.

amantha Sibley, 14, of San Clemente is off in Hawaii making South Orange County proud. This past weekend, Sibley placed fourth in the 16U Girls division of the Rip Curl Gromsearch campaign.

It’s another notch in the belt for Sibley, whose performances have been stellar over the last two years. She placed first in the Explorer Womens competition at the National Scholastic Surfing Association West Coast Championships in May. At that same event, she finished second in Explorer Girls San Clemente Times July 14-20, 2016

Harrison also has a 20-mile, 9-man outrigger canoe race named after him.

The Whitey Harrison Classic is in its 46th year and runs from Dana Point Harbor to Laguna Beach and back.

Mary Lou McGinnis Drummy, meanwhile, is also well-known and revered in the local surf culture. Drummy competed up and down the California coast in the ’60s and ’70s as one of the best surfers—male or female—in her time.

It capped a strong NSSA year for Sibley, who opened the season with a win in the Girls final back in September. Last year, she also helped the Shorecliffs Middle School surf team take home their 12th straight national title, and ended her middle school run as the level’s national champion.

Sibley told the San Clemente Times after that event that her surfing goal is to make the World Tour, and also to make the Surfing USA Juniors Team. She made it in 2015, and was recently announced to the 2016-2017 team last month, after a strong third place finish in the U14 Girls competition at the USA Surfing Championship.

With all her accolades, it’s amazing that Sibley has so much time left to compete at the juniors level.

She parlayed that success into several roles as an extra in Hollywood films, and was the first woman to star in a feature surf film, Follow Me. Drummy is an advocate for women’s surfing, having started the Women’s International Surfing Assocaition, which eventually merged with the Western Surfing Association, of which she serves as executive director. Drummy has also raised four children, and three became professional surfers.

Drummy will receive the Woman of the Year award at the celebration. Harrison will be honored with the Surf Pioneer honor.

Other inductees include Bob Hurley, founder of the iconic surf clothing brand; Timmy Turner, a filmmaker and surf business owner; and surfers C.J. Hobgood and Joey Cabell.

Then expect onshore flow to gradually rise up over the late morning and into the afternoon, eventually becoming moderate in strength. Also, skies will clear up.

Outlook: Blend of primary Southerly swell and NW windswell will maintain modest to fun size surf for well exposed breaks the back half of this week. Morning conditions look best with light winds, then expect light/moderate onshore flow to rise up each afternoon. More modest tropical swell midweek.
