Five things San Clemente should know this week Developers of Proposed Mini-golf Course, Wave Pool Charged with Felony Fraud THE LATEST: Four developers involved with the proposed miniature golf and wave pool at Vista Hermosa Sports Park a few years ago were arrested on Thursday and Friday, April 14 and 15, on charges of defrauding local investors out of more than $1 million.

Jourdan Tyson Groves, Michael Scott Melcher, Michael Ruffner and Christopher Schlegel, who were all once part of the company Surf N’ Turf Paradiso, LLC, have all been arrested and charged with felonies relating to fraud, one such count was for $1.118 million between Feb. 6, 2012 and June 26, 2014, according to the Orange County District Attorney warrant issued on April 8.

Original plans were for Surf N’ Turf to install a wave pool, mini-golf course and restaurant or snack bar. The company, under leaseholder Melcher, planned to lease the land for $2,500 a month plus 6 percent of gross revenue, until $400,00 had been collected and would rise to 8 percent. The city of San Clemente awarded the lease of the land for the miniature golf course on Aug. 22, 2013 to Surf N’Turf, but the project fell through in October 2014 when the developers did not meet the city’s deadline to complete it.

At a City Council meeting in May 2015, City Manager James Makshanoff told the council the city would be moving on from the project.

Michelle Lipton, Orange County deputy district attorney who is prosecuting the case, said because returns on promissory notes had not been fulfilled in addition to the failure of proper and thorough disclosure of the use for the funds to investors, the charges of fraud applied.

Groves, Ruffner and Melcher were all held on $1 million bail and Schlegel was held on $530,000. All of them must prove the money was not gained by illegal means. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department inmate list, all four were still in custody as of Tuesday.

There is an ongoing civil lawsuit between investors of Surf N’ Turf and the four defendants in the criminal case.

All four arraignments have been continued to May 6 at Central Superior Court.

San Clemente Homeowner Sues Coastal Commission WHAT’S NEXT: On Friday, April 15, Eric Wills, the owner of a mobile home in the Capistrano Shores subdivision, filed a lawsuit against the California Coastal Commission in Orange County Superior Court for denying him the right to maintain the seawall that protects his property.

According to documents provided by Pacific Legal Foundation, representing Wills in the suit, the CCC approved a coastal development permit for the home but because Wills was putting in a new structure they stated he would have to forfeit his right to apply for permitting to further alter any seawall protecting his home, under the provisions of the California Coastal Act. The reason for this is to prevent erosion and anything that could hamper sand replenishment.

In 2014, Wills removed a rundown mo-

bile home and put a new one its place for him and his family of five.

“We believe it’s unconstitutional and a violation of the Coastal Act,” Wills said. “(The commission) doesn’t have the right to blackmail us to give up the right to protect our property. Basically, it’s the same as telling the people in Talega there’s a fire and you can’t put it out with water.”

Although the seawall is in good condition, Wills said he doesn’t want his right to apply for future repairs to be taken away.

“The government can’t leverage its permitting power to take a right from property owners that they possess under both the state law and the Coastal Act in exchange to get a permit they’re otherwise entitled to,” Salzman said. “What the CCC can do is condition permits in order to offset or mitigate harms to the public or harms to the coast that would arise from the development project.”

One of the arguments Wills may have to fight is that the CCC opposes any development that disturbs or is in front of the natural bluff, but Larry Salzman, a PLF attorney, contends the natural bluff behind the developments already has Pacific Coast Highway, the Orange County Line railway, Capistrano Shores and the revetment wall in front of it.

“If in fact the CCC is going to have this provision in place, they’re going to wipe out the mobile home park,” Wills said.

“The demand for this waiver is way in excess of what I’m doing.”

Salzman said replacing the mobile home does not cause any harm or detriment to the coast. He cited the U.S.

Supreme Court Case Nolan v. California Coastal Commission (1987) as one case that proved this assertion.

“The Wills and many other families at Capistrano Shores have made huge investments in these properties, and they have a right to protect those properties,” Salzman said.

Wills said without being able to repair the seawall, his home could be destroyed.

From early 2015 to 2016, Wills and many people with San Clemente coastal properties fought against the provision in the city’s Coastal Land Use Plan that prohibited repairing a seawall if a property is removed and replaced. The city eventually changed the CLUP provision to allow for repairs to seawalls.

Salzmann said the precedent that could be set by this case, if they win, could prohibit future waiver obligation to protecting coastal property in the future.

“The CCC is exceeding its jurisdiction and violating the law by demanding these shoreline protection waivers from property owners,” Salzman said. “A win here will make it much more difficult for the commission to do that up and down this coast. So, it potentially affects thousands of property owners along the coast.

Vista Del Mar Elementary Wins Gold Ribbon Schools Award THE LATEST: State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced on April 13 that Vista Del Mar Elementary School was named a Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program recipient.

The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award honors schools in place of the California Distinguished Schools Program, currently on hiatus until California implements another assessment and accountability systems. According to a press release from the California Department of Education, about 6,000 elementary schools were eligible to apply for the award this year.

Schools applied for the award based on a model program or practice their school has adopted that includes standards-based activities, projects, strategies and practices that can be replicated by other local educational agencies.

“The Gold Ribbon Awards recognize California schools that have made gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education,” the release stated. “These include the state standards for English language, arts and mathematics, the California English Language (Cont. on page 4) www.sanclementetimes.com

CUSD Selects Central Location for Mandarin Program, Pleasing South County Parents THE LATEST: South Orange County parents with children in the Capistrano Unified School District’s Mandarin Immersion Program can look forward to shorter commutes at the middle school level thanks to a 5-2 vote by the board of trustees Wednesday night to approve the program’s pathway from Marian Bergeson Elementary School to Niguel Hills Middle School in Laguna Niguel. The primary alternative considered was matriculation from Bergeson to Fred Newhart Middle School in Mission Viejo.

Currently, CUSD’s Mandarin Immersion Program, or MIP, has two classrooms per grade level, kindergarten through third grade, and one classroom of 32 students in fourth grade at Marian Bergeson Elementary School in Laguna Niguel. Beginning in kindergarten, instructors teach MIP students in 80 percent Mandarin and 20 percent English, transitioning to a 50-50 model for third through fifth grade.

By 2020, CUSD estimates that 145 middle school students will be enrolled in MIP. Wednesday marked the fifth and final reading of the amendments to CUSD’s language immersion and international baccalaureate admissions, including updates to the recommended matriculation pathway for MIP. Based on previous feedback from trustees, staff’s recommendation was for MIP to matriculate from Bergeson to Fred Newhart Middle School to Capistrano Valley High School.

That recommendation did not settle well with MIP families who reside in south Orange County cities such as San Clemente, Dana Point and Capistrano Beach.

According to a CUSD survey, south county families account for about 20 percent of MIP enrollment, while 46 percent of students live in Laguna Niguel and Aliso communities.

Backed by a petition with more than 50 signatures, eight south county parents addressed the board Wednesday asking that Niguel Hills be selected to harbor the middle school level of the program, as Page 4

it would be a much faster commute and more centrally located, especially for parents with kids at multiple schools. Parents spoke mainly about having equal and fair access, stressing that they would not be able to manage the commute to Mission Viejo and would have to leave the program in Newhart were selected.

During the board’s discussion, Trustee John Alpay noted, and staff confirmed, that if CUSD’s survey had factored in only the students within the district’s boundaries, the most centrally-located option would be Niguel Hills. A few trustees countered that Niguel Hills currently does not have the capacity to support the influx of students, and renovating classrooms there would take funding away from maintenance for other district facilities.

Alpay offered a motion, seconded by Trustee Jim Reardon, to adopt the staff recommendation with the exception of changing the MIP middle school from Newhart to Niguel Hills.

Reardon, who was initially neutral on the matter, said even though it seems like Newhart would be a minimal increase in distance, traffic in the area during commute hours lengthens the drive considerably.

“I think there’s been a compelling case made here that we’re disrespecting San Clemente and Dana Point,” Reardon said.

“I drive these roads every day; I know how long it takes just to get to La Paz on the freeway from San Juan Capistrano. I wouldn’t want to do it from San Clemente.”

WHAT’S NEXT: The board voted 5-2 to approve the MIP pathway from Bergeson to Niguel Hills to Capistrano Valley.

City Council Takes More Time to Consider Sale of City Hall THE LATEST: During the Tuesday night meeting, City Council decided to allow for city staff to take more time to consider options of moving City Hall to the offices at the 910 Calle Negocio location or to refurbish the current structure at 100 Avenida Presidio.

The move has been considered for years and now officials say the current building is in need of substantial maintenance.

Four main proposals to address the issue were presented, but some of them had too large a price tag for council members to consider.

WHAT’S NEXT: The current building the city owns at Calle Negocio has other tenants whose leases are scheduled to end in 2018. Mary Anna Anderson, community volunteer, remembered by family, friends

ary Anna Anderson, 73, was regarded as a pillar of the San Clemente recreation and youth community.

Mary Anna died March 31 and was recognized by City Council at the April 5 meeting for her more than three decades of service to the community.

Her husband, Joe Anderson, a former City Councilman, described his wife as someone who would follow things through to complete objectives without being confrontational.

Originally from La Jolla, the couple married in 1964, moving to Tacoma, Washington, where they lived for eight years before moving to Sacramento. They had three children before becoming weary of corporate work and relocating to San Clemente in 1976. Joe opened an insurance agency in town, and Mary Anna worked in the front office.

“She definitely was involved,” Joe said.

“Ocean Festival became the first thing she became involved with. She stayed with the Ocean Festival for over 30 years, on the board from 1978 to 2008 or 2009. She held virtually every position on the board including president, treasurer, secretary and more.”

A memorial service was held on Friday, April 15.

Joe said throughout Mary Anna’s life she was part of a water skiing club, a rowing club and just about anything dedicated to costal living.

Peggy Vance, executive director of Ocean Festival, worked with Mary Anna for many years as part of the Friends of San Clemente Beaches, Parks & Recreation Foundation.

“I feel privileged to have worked with Mary Anna Anderson—one of the Ocean Festival ‘original’ volunteers, and later returning to once again serve on the board and coordinate volunteers for the event,” Vance said. “She was supportive as a fellow San Clemente Beaches Parks & Recreation Commissioner (appointed seven times by City Council), and as the director of Friends of San Clemente BP&R Foundation. She did so much to support our Spanish Village by the Sea. Most importantly, I’m so happy to have had Mary Anna in my life as a friend.”

Vance, who currently works with Joe on the Friends of San Clemente Foundation for fundraising activities, said working with Mary Anna was fun because of her personality.

tenacity,” Vance said. “I miss her, but know she is in a better place. And I know she’ll continue to watch over us. Through her, I met her husband, Joe, who has also become a good friend. I have to admit that on more than one occasion I would interrupt their 3 p.m. ‘coffee’ when they took time from their busy days to stop and take a break together. My apologies, Mary Anna. Hope you forgive me, but also glad I was able to join the two of you for a few of them along the way.”

Additionally, Mary Anna was a cofounder of the Youth Advisory Committee, a liaison between city government and San Clemente High School.

“The last major thing she did with Bill Thomas was co-founding the Friends of Beaches, Parks & Recreation Foundation,” Joe said. “It’s become an integral part of our community recreation and culture.

They also run the cyber café computer training for mostly older adults.”

Joe said Mary Anna always stayed organized in her own way. He said she had a congenial personality and was able to keep everything she was involved with together.

“As all of this was going on—just by themselves that would be a full-time job for most of us—she’s raising three boys. I mean, we both were, but she did the lion’s share of it,” Joe said.

Mary Anna helped organize Joe’s campaign for City Council, which he served on for 16 years. A map of the precincts during the campaign still hangs in the Anderson’s garage.

“There’s a lot of filing and organization that’s required during a campaign, and she handled a lot of it,” Joe said. “Ideally, we’d have someone in each precinct talking to

neighbors and walking the area. There’s a lot of scheduling in terms of holding coffees (meetings), particularly in San Clemente. You want to be speaking to people in various parts of the community.”

It wasn’t until her illness started to affect her in 2010 that she took a step back from working so many different community engagements, Joe said.

“She had a unique personality; she had the ability to get along with virtually everybody,” Joe said. “Everybody from corporate executives from the people I was working with and, as I said in her obituary, to the most humble men on the street.”

Joe read a quote from the memorial service that came from a friend of the family’s.

“She said, ‘What you saw in her and what she said was the real deal—no smoke and mirrors. (Mary Anna) was a real genuine person,’” Joe recited. “I think that sums it up. She was just obviously very engaged.”

Joe said he will miss his lifelong companion who he knew for more than 55 years, and many other members of the community said they will miss her too. SC

BEYOND OCEAN FESTIVAL Mary Anna was involved in more than Ocean Festival. She was on the auxiliary board of the Boys & Girls Club of South Coast Area for some time, Joe said.

“A lot of what she did was to help the youth of the area,” Joe said.

In the early 1980s when the San Clemente Pier was heavily damaged by a storm, she was part of an ad hoc committee to help rebuild it.

When the Desert Storm War in Iraq ended, Mary Anna helped organize a parade for the returning San Clemente-based troops. She also worked with the Historical Society.

Bonito Canyon Park Playground Opens Bonito Canyon Park opened a new playground on Thursday, April 14. The city of San Clemente hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the park, located at 1304 Calle Valle.

According to a city of San Clemente press release, the playground incorporates more challenging play including “ropebased” play structures. The new Bonito Canyon Park playground equipment also features new components to “enhance the play experience for all children,” the press release stated.

SCHS Grad Makes Cal Poly-SLO Dean’s List Nash Taylor, a 2015 International Baccalaureate graduate of San Clemente High School, made the Dean’s Honor List for the College of Engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The Dean’s List is compiled at the end of each quarter to recognize undergraduate students who have completed 12 or more letter-graded units at Cal Poly during the quarter with a 3.5 grade point average or better for that term.

Meet the Mayor April 30 Mayor Bob Baker will host his second “Meet the Mayor” event of this year on Saturday, April 30, at the Panera Bread in the Talega Village Center from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. The City’s Community Development Director Cecilia Gallardo-Daly will join the mayor to participate in the discussion. Members of the public are invited to participate, ask questions and share their concerns.

This meeting serves as a variation of the mayor’s hours at City Hall and provides a more neutral, convenient setting for those unable to make it to City Hall during the work or school day. A couple dozen residents turned out for Mayor Baker’s “Meet the Mayor” event in February, which was also held at Panera Bread.

Dog Food Drive The Feed A Dog Food Drive, a Three Dog Bakery nationwide event in which participating franchises partner with local non-profit animal rescues and organizations, will be held through the entire month of May. For the second year in a row, Three Dog Bakery San Clemente will partner with the Camp Pendleton Animal Shelter. Last year, owners said the bakery was able to donate 800 pounds of food to San Clemente Times April 21-27, 2016

La Casa Pacifica Back on Market for $69 Million According to the Multiple Listing Services website, La Casa Pacifica, also known as the Western White House, is now listed at $69 million, down from about a year ago when it was listed for $75 million.

Sea Summit Parks Not Open Yet As part of the Sea Summit development at Marblehead, the city of San Clemente will soon receive four new public parks.

“The city would like to remind the public that the parks and restrooms are not officially open for use yet and are still considered the developer’s construction sites until completed and the assets formally

turned over to the City,” a city press release stated. “Once the City takes official possession, which will be in stages over the next few months, the parks and restrooms will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.”

Proshred Orange County, a document shredding company, helped with the event.

At these quarterly events, there are no forms to complete and any stored data is eradicated.

NCBA to Host Benefit Party for Norma Hernandez The North Beach Community Association will host a fundraiser party to benefit Norma Hernandez of the Chamber of Commerce and her family. San Clemente business secures deal on ‘Shark Tank’

ngela and Steve Watts put their matrimonial chips on the table.

The $10,000 Angela’s mother saved up for their wedding would be used to finance the couple’s business as they tried to raise sales for their surf handboards.

Then, after trying three times, Slyde Handboards, which operates in San Clemente, got its shot at going into business with venture capitalists from the television show “Shark Tank.” On the show, inventors and entrepreneurs showcase their products to millionaires and billionaires, hoping to impress one or more of them and get them to invest in their product.

Slyde Handboards was able to convince Mark Cuban and guest investor Ashton Kutcher to put $200,000 into the business for a 22 percent stake in their company.

“It was the best feeling in the world,” Angela said. “Steve always says, ‘It’s like bungee jumping—the biggest thrill of your life.’ We worked so hard for this for years.”

Of course, due to non-disclosure clauses from the show, it had to be a restrained jubilation. That was about a year ago when they filmed the episode, which aired on Friday, April 15.

At one point, the Watts were given the exact offer they asked for from Robert Herjavec, an information security businessman, but they decided to take two “sharks” instead of one.

Since then, Slyde has taken the advice and assistance of their wealthy investors and put their products into larger markets.

Website advertising constantly features Slyde Handboards on their revolving spaces, and, perhaps more importantly, the Watts were able to marry.

“We have finally been able to pay my mom back,” Angela said. “And since the

show, we’re no longer working in our onebedroom apartment. It’s a lot of money to run a small business, especially in a sport that no one’s really heard of.”

Slyde is now operated in a commercial space in Talega. Angela said the strategy on the show was to know the business thoroughly and review every aspect.

“Preparing for the show was a crazy experience, and we had to know the ins and outs of our business,” Angela said.

“Obviously, when you’re going on national television you want to make sure that you answer the question with 100 percent certainty. Crunching numbers and getting help from the mentors we had helped us get a deal.”

Angela said the product has received broad exposure since the show aired.

Cuban has helped the company grow with online marketing and sales, and Kutcher’s marketers have been able to send the product into larger outlets.

hy is a Jamaican musician who died 35 years ago the world’s most popular artist?

Who would we consider the giant of pop music in the later half of the 20th Century?

Would anyone have guessed a few decades ago that today’s biggest global music star would be an Afro-European of mixed lineage from a small backwater village on a Caribbean island who only lived to be 35?

“Special interest groups” and the San Clemente City Council seem to be in lockstep, and I believe not always to the betterment of the community. “Derail the Rail, Stop the Toll Road, Save Trestles,” running the Rib Trader out of town, reducing Ralphs to a postage-stamp size, North Beach non-redevelopment, Poche Beach water recycle system, Ban the Bag (failed, thankfully), fragmented signage policy and, most critically, sponsoring and supporting propaganda attacks on SONGS, backing a no-compromise position on MemorialCare Hospital closing and, way back when, discouraging building of the Nixon Presidential Library on the site now covered by yet another outlet mall.

Meanwhile, weekend traffic on I-5 is at a standstill for hours, rail ridership is a small percentage of what it could be and Trestles is still the private domain of the privileged few surfers living in the area.

With the 47th annual observance of Earth Day just around the corner, this is a great time to explore more effective ways of slowing climate change and conserving Earth’s natural resources for future generations.

A 2010 United Nations report charged animal agriculture with 19 percent of man-made greenhouse gases—more than all transport—and recommended a global shift to a vegan diet. A subsequent World Watch study placed that contribution closer to 50 percent. Meat and dairy production also dumps more water pollutants than all other human activities combined.

It is the driving force in global deforestation and wildlife habitat destruction.

Last fall, England’s prestigious Chatham House declared that reducing

meat consumption is critical to achieving global climate goals. A report from Oxford University found that global adoption of a vegan diet would reduce greenhouse emissions by two thirds. The 2015 U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee has recommended reduced meat consumption and an environmentally sustainable diet.

Just as we replace fossil fuels by wind, solar and other sustainable energy sources, we must replace animal foods with the more sustainable vegetables, fruits and grains. Being mindful of this can help us make better choices at the supermarket.

The Root of It All

Vital health begins with how well-rooted you are

H

ave you heard the 10 rules for being human? The first of Dr. Cherie Carter Scott’s rules, from her 1998 book “If Life is a Game, These are the Rules,” is that, “You will receive a body. You may love it or hate it, but it will be yours for the duration of your life on Earth.”

The second rule is: “You will be presented with lessons.” Rules three and four refer to lessons as well—noting life presents no mistakes, only lessons. The fifth, too, regards lessons, stating that “Learning does not end … If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.”

These lessons on being human are well-known in ancient traditions and are discussed widely in modern science. The seven sacred truths of the Kabbalah, the Christian sacraments and the Hindu chakras each teach these core-human lessons. They all begin at the “root” of who we are and

lead to our spiritual life.

Modern life often works against our first and most basic lesson of the root to create our core identity and personal code of honor, have a sense of safety—be it physical, emotional and financial—honor our family bonds while creating healthy boundaries and a sense of belonging. Disparities in this root lesson can cause dysfunction in our adrenal glands, immune system, skin, bones, muscle, blood and DNA—the pieces of our body that define our identity, defend us, trigger our flight-or-fight response and connect us to the world and with one other.

Stress, illness, deadlines, arguments, isolation, separation from family, lack of time to relax or exercise, exposure to toxins, lack of sleep and poor diet each impact your root.

These strains can cause frequent illness, anxiety and depression, trouble focusing, digestive issues, headaches, allergies, muscle and joint pain, skin problems and insomnia.

All tensions that can lead to the use of al-

cohol, caffeine and medication to mask the underlying issue—an unbalanced root.

An overactive root is stubborn. It doesn’t like change. A person harboring an overactive root may feel stuck, take things too literally, hate feeling controlled or experience paranoia. Their body may be overweight, arthritic and inflamed. Conversely, an underactive root is exhausted, physically fragile and thin. This can leave people feeling unsafe, insolated, easily overwhelmed and unable to settle down.

It is vital to strike a balance between the two. Balancing your root can be fairly easy.

First, focus on food—the protein and minerals entering your body. Research shows the color red is linked to alertness, self-control, avoidance of a threat, stamina and strength.

Think apples, tomatoes, berries, red herbal tea, beets, clean proteins and minerals—especially zinc and selenium. By minimizing your alcohol, caffeine and refined sugar intake, you too will feel a positive change.

Then, get outside and move your body.

Reconnect with Mother Nature by touching the earth, having a picnic and breathing fresh air. It is also essential to connect with people who reinforce you.

Finally, live within your means and identify your own triggers to stress. By knowing your limits and being more aware, you can draw healthy boundaries to those things in life that ignite your anxiety and create tension.

Managing your root is the first ancient lesson of being human and the beginning of a vital life. Once it is balanced, the other lessons build upon each other allowing things to flow through you instead of getting stuck.

Through balance you are nurturing your creative playful self. Balance provides the platform for you to harness energy as well as give and receive love. With it, you can speak honestly and live a strong, spiritual life.

Perfecting Vision Through Cataract Surgery

Like wrinkles and thinning hair, cataracts are an inevitable change that commonly happens with aging. According to the National Eye Institute, the risk of cataracts increases with each decade of life starting around age 40. By age 75, half of Caucasian Americans have cataracts. By age 80, percent of Caucasian Americans have cataracts, compared with 53 percent of African American and 61 percent of Hispanic Americans. Worldwide, approximately 20 million people are totally blind from cataracts.

Normally, we are born with a clear, transparent lens inside each eye. As we age, cloudiness develops in each lens. This haziness causes blurred vision, inability to see in dim light, seeing halos around lights or vision loss. Having cataracts can be like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. The eye may eventually become legally blind. There is no way to prevent or reverse cataracts with medications, and the only treatment is cataract surgery.

In 2015, nearly 4 million cataract surgeries were performed in the United States, likely owing to the incredible advancements in the field of this remarkable surgery. In most patients, the surgery takes less than 20 minutes from beginning to end. It is a microsurgery performed by the surgeon through a microscope.

An extremely small incision is made in the eye and a small vibrating instrument is used to ultrasonically remove the cataract in small fragments. A new clear artificial plastic lens is then inserted. There is no bleeding and very minimal pain. During the surgery, the patient feels very relaxed due to a gentle sedative medication.

Thanks to the minimal anesthesia and short procedure time, the recovery is relatively fast. Most patients’ vision is good enough immediately after the surgery to

walk around and take care of their basic activities of daily living. Eye drops are prescribed for a few weeks after surgery in order to reduce inflammation and prevent infections. Just like any medical procedure, there is some risk to surgery but with current technology and surgical techniques, vision-threatening complications of cataract surgery are less than 1 in 1000.

The most exciting recent advancement in cataract surgery has been the extensive variety of artificial lenses from which patients can choose. Previously, lenses that correct vision at only one distance were most commonly used. These lenses are called monofocal lenses and are similar to wearing a single vision pair of glasses. We now have the advantage of having multifocal lenses available, which are designed to correct vision both at distance and up close. There are also lenses that correct for astigmatism.

These advanced lenses, when implanted in appropriate candidates, reduce the reliance of glasses after cataract surgery.

We are so fortunate we live in an age when modern cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures performed today, with the vast majority of these procedures producing excellent vision. I feel privileged everyday to be able to enhance the sight of patients whose daily activities are limited by their cataracts.

A Healthy Body Needs a Healthy Mouth

People in south Orange County are highly educated and have a healthier lifestyle than those in other parts of the country. We are more knowledgeable about diet, don’t smoke, are into exercise, yoga and the beach. We, too, are proactive about reducing risk factors for most chronic diseases.

However, what is often ignored is chronic periodontal disease, which affects half of the adult population.

The most common cause of severe periodontitis is failure to treat the disease early or under-treatment. If healthy individuals stop brushing and flossing, within one week, all will develop gingivitis, inflammation of the gums. When they resume hygiene, gums will return to normal. If gingivitis is allowed to progress, it affects the ligaments and bone that surround the teeth and becomes periodontitis.

Not everyone gets periodontitis, though.

There are other risk factors such as heredity, smoking and diabetes. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect the entire body.

People with periodontitis are more likely to have other inflammatory conditions, like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. If allowed to progress untreated or under treated, it can result in tooth loss. Many people think that when we age it is part of a natural progression to lose teeth. Now we know that that is not true. Periodontal disease is treatable and preventable.

Early periodontal disease is treated by scaling and root planning—deep cleaning. Moderate to severe periodontitis was traditionally treated by a periodontist using flap surgery and bone grafting. Nowadays, it

is more effectively treated by LANAP (laser assisted new attachment procedure). There is a specific laser protocol that the doctor performs. This is not done by the hygienist.

Currently, 25 percent of the periodontists in the country are using this procedure.

If the teeth cannot be saved because of periodontal disease or decay, there is a procedure called “all on four” or “teeth in a day.” The remaining teeth are extracted.

Then four or more dental implants are inserted into each jaw and a temporary bridge that replaces all the teeth is screwed in place. When the implants are integrated or healed, the permanent bridges are screwed in. This is a unique procedure that can work in patients who have limited bone.

Years ago, we thought that if you got dental implants, then you were set for life and nothing could happen provided the implants integrated into the bone. Now we know that implants can get periodontal disease, so it is important to get your dental implants checked annually.

Aside from treating periodontal disease and placing dental implants, periodontists utilize esthetic procedures to add gum tissue and to correct gummy smiles. If you think you have gum disease, be pro-active about reducing inflammation in your mouth.

How Excessive Drinking Affects Oral Health

There are plenty of health risks associated with drinking alcohol in excess, but one of the major health factors commonly overlooked when it comes to alcohol consumption is dental and oral health.

While having a few glasses of red wine throughout the week may have a beneficial impact of your health, other alcoholic beverages don’t typically hold up to medical scrutiny. Cocktails with high volumes of

sugar can have a devastating impact of your oral health, as sugar feeds bacteria in the mouth and allows harmful acids to eat away at your enamel. Long-term intake of sugary beverages (included soft drinks and sports drinks) can also lead to the development of cavities.

According to the American Dental Association, alcohol consumption can also lead to dehydration and dry mouth, which limits the amount of saliva in your mouth over a longer period of time. This can lead to tooth decay, oral infections, gum disease and even

mouth cancer.

Furthermore, drinking alcohol in excess can also weaken your body’s immune system, leaving you at greater risk for illness and disease as well as limiting your body’s ability to create antioxidants to fight infections and other diseases.

However, despite the risks associated with drinking alcohol, drinking in moderation will likely have little to no effect on your body’s overall health. Keeping up with regular and thorough dental hygiene habits is also a great way to prevent oral health

issues from developing in the future.

etween our daily commitments it can seem like there isn’t enough time in a day. It’s tough to balance children, work, school and activities while also making time for yourself. Often times the first thing to get cut is a workout.

Below is a breakdown of the workout.

What is EPOC and what are its benefits?

Pronounced ee-pok, EPOC is short for Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption— also known as the “afterburn” effect. EPOC is a measurably increased rate of oxygen intake intended to erase the body’s “oxygen deficit” created by exercise. Oxygen, and thus EPOC, is used in the exercise-recovery process to return the body to a resting state and assist in hormone balancing, fuel store replenishment, cellular repair and a host of other restorative functions.

What we really like about EPOC is that it is accompanied by an elevated consumption of fuel, namely fat stores that are broken down and released into the bloodstream during exercise. Another key thing to note about EPOC is it lasts around 36 hours and its effects increase with the intensity of the exercise. Therefore, if we can participate in intense exercise every other day, we can keep our body metabolically charged at all times.

What the heck is HIIT? High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT, is extremely effective in achieving EPOC.

By varying efforts, we can achieve levels of exercise intensity not possible with a static effort, thus increasing the effects of EPOC. How do we know we are achieving the proper intensity?

At Orangetheory Fitness, each member wears a heart rate monitor displaying their heart rate in terms of a percentage of their maximum heart rate. From there, these percentages are divided into five “zones.”

Workouts are designed to target and achieve 12-20 minutes in heart rate zone four—the “orange zone”—thus ensuring each participant is achieving EPOC and is metabolically charged for the next 36 hours.

If I am burning all these calories, why do I care about weights?

Resistance training has many health benefits and anti-aging effects that are paramount to a long and healthy life. We use body weights at Orangetheory Fitness, TRX suspension training and free weights for a multi-pronged attack on muscle fibers. All of this can be achieved without the “bulking” many worry about. In addition to the calories burned, creating lean muscle, carrying around a few extra pounds of muscle will increase your resting metabolism. Adding just 5 pounds of muscle will cause your body to burn an additional 175 to 250 calories per day at rest!

Picket Fence Media: How did you first become interested in naturopathic medicine?

Helene Pulnik: I started my jounce in healthcare as a registered pharmacist. I was the pharmacy manager for a busy chain pharmacy. My oldest daughter developed asthma and had a severe adverse reaction to the medications and I decided to take another path to get her well again. I started researching natural remedies and I have never stopped. I returned to the world of academia and received a masters degree in human nutrition, then my doctorate in naturopathic medicine from the University of Bridgeport College.

Getting to the Core of the problem

Helene Pulnik often sees patients once they’ve exhausted all other resources.

Naturopathic doctors attend one of the five accredited, 4-year naturopathic medical schools in the United States. They must also pass national board exams and state licensure exams in

order to become licensed naturopathic doctors. Naturopathic doctors, too, are trained as primary care providers using natural and integrative medicine.

What types of ailments have you successfully treated using natural methods?

I have successfully treated many individuals who want to improve their diet and address health concerns such as digestive problems, allergies, food sensitivities, anxiety, weight loss, hormone related concerns and more.

Are there instances where you recommend patients seek out allopathic treatment?

Yes, whenever a patient needs specialized evaluation and care from an allopathic medical doctor they are always referred appropriately.

What is the one piece of advice you give all patients regarding naturopathic health care?

The best remedies are a healthy diet, regular exercise, a good night’s sleep and spending time relaxing with family and friends.

As we embrace the technological age and ever-present way of being plugged into our social networks and ever-increasing speed of accomplishments in our families, careers and personal pursuits, our bodies are usually the last thing we notice until something goes wrong or we realize we just don’t have what it takes to get everything done at the end of the day.

Kidney disease, acid reflux and heart disease are a few. It’s safe to say dental exams can provide clues and warning signs for your overall health.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, people who have chronic gum disease are at higher risk for a heart attack.

Research, too, shows gum disease may contribute to heart disease because bacteria from infected gums can dislodge, enter the bloodstream, attach to blood vessels and increase clot formation. It has also been suggested that inflammation caused by gum disease may trigger clot formation. Clots decrease blood flow to the heart, thereby causing an elevation in blood pressure and increasing the risk of a heart attack.

If you’re among the quarter of Americans with this dangerous condition, you may have something new to worry about. Medication to lower your blood pressure can come with the unwanted side effect of gingival enlargement, a condition in which your gums swell and start to grow over your teeth.

PREVENTION Maintain good oral care at home,, schedule dental hygiene appointments and an annual check-up with the family physician. The AGD says proper diagnosis and treatment of tooth and gum infections in some of these patients have led to a decrease in blood pressure medications and improved overall health. Additionally, researchers discovered those who drink green tea regularly have healthier gums than those who don’t. Green tea’s secret ingredient is catechin—a natural antioxidant that reduces inflammation. So, add a cup of green tea to your daily diet.

PREVENTION See the family physician to manage blood pressure and plan a visit to the dental office for cleanings and annual check-ups. Studies have shown that basil, garlic, cinnamon and flaxseed, which is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, can help lower your blood pressure.

Flaxseed may also protect against atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease by reducing serum cholesterol, improving glucose tolerance and acting as an antioxidant.

On a side note, there are herbal and vitamin supplements that can have serious side effects for some dental patients when taken in combination with others. If you are thinking of trying herbs for medical reasons, whether that means using the whole herb or a supplement, speak to your doctor first.

Some herbs, especially in large quantities, may produce undesirable side effects or interfere with other medications.

PREVENTION If you experience reflux episodes during the day, protect your teeth by rinsing vigorously with water to reduce acid in your mouth.

You may be tempted, but don’t brush your teeth right away—the bristles can damage enamel still soft from acid. To prevent nighttime reflux, make sure not to eat two to three hours before bed and avoid triggers like alcohol, caffeine and anything acidic.

ou may not know it, but hearing loss and psychological health are connected.

Because hearing is an invisible sense, we tend not to pay very much attention to it—until something begins to change. And usually, changes in our ears are noticeable right away. Think about times you’ve heard a ringing in the ear after being in close proximity to firecrackers, for example. Or, if there is a lot of pressure in your ear area after a cold and your hearing is muffled.

Hearing, like our other senses, is an important element of keeping us connected to the world and ensuring our safety and security.

Most of all, hearing plays a big part in the formation of language, speech and memory.

When our hearing changes, we begin to experience sound and thus, the world around us and the people in our lives, differently.

Difficulties with Speech Recognition Hearing loss affects our ability to recognize speech and speech patterns as clearly as we once did. With normal hearing, we are able to anticipate certain words, phrases and sounds, while our brains work at rapidfire speed to process the stimuli. When our speech recognition abilities are hindered, the brain must struggle to fill in the gaps.

When others speak, they may sound muffled and you may find that you are asking people to speak up. Conversations may become frustrating as a result.

Lapsed Communication and Interactions Because recognizing speech is a key element in clear communication, you may find that your interactions with people have become more confusing and difficult. You may find yourself misinterpreting what people are saying. In fact, a common sign of hearing loss is withdrawing socially. Rather than having to struggle through interactions, people with untreated hearing loss tend to avoid social interactions. This inevitably leads to a sense of isolation and loneliness, thus increasing the risk of depression.

Stress, Anxiety, and other Emotions Although hearing loss is the third most

common condition in the United States, there is still some taboo surrounding it. As a result, people who are struggling with their hearing tend to avoid acknowledging the issue. By not tackling hearing loss head on, there are a number of consequences to one’s emotional health. In the workplace, with family, at social gatherings—there will be difficulty interacting with people. This may lead to frustration, embarrassment, anger and diminished self-confidence. Stress and anxiety are two emotional states that become increased with untreated hearing loss.

Cognitive Burdens From a technical standpoint, researchers have found that untreated hearing loss has the potential to increase the risk of dementia. Our brains allow us to hear sounds. Our ears take in sound waves and translate them into neural signals that the brain recognizes as sound. With hearing loss, the sound signal is not as clear as it once was. As a result, our brains must struggle to process that sound. Researchers from Johns Hopkins have identified that this process leads to a cognitive load that essentially tires out the brain and interferes with cognitive ability. At the same time, researchers in Japan found that treating hearing loss early on was beneficial to one’s cognitive health.

Treating Hearing Loss If you believe you, or someone you love, are experiencing hearing loss, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. By taking a hearing test and being fitted for hearing aids, you will find not only that your hearing will improve— but also major aspects of your life as a social being.

At the Movies: ‘The Jungle Book’ is More Than its Cover

espite Disney’s history and reputation for reimagining classic fairytales, the one famous story the studio revisits the most is the 1894 Rudyard Kipling tale “The Jungle Book.”

Most remembered as the 1967 animated musical, it was then filmed as a gritty action/adventure in 1994. Then the animated film got a terribly received sequel in 2003, and now a CGI/live-action hybrid carries on the tradition. Directed by Jon Favreau of Elf (2003) and Iron Man (2008) fame, the updated adaptation is a visual feast.

Ten-year-old Indian boy Mowgli (Neel

Sethi) has been raised in the jungle by a wolf pack and black panther Bagheera (Ben Kingsley) since he was orphaned as a baby.

As he avidly tries to fit into the jungle despite his human qualities by acting and living like a wolf, menacing and deadly tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba) discovers Mowgli’s existence.

The tiger wants nothing more than to eat the boy whole, while Bagheera and sloth bear Baloo (Bill Murray) lead Mowgli to the nearest man village.

Mommy said the F Word

A

s it drew closer, the kids started counting down the days until spring break. No homework. No school. No problem. I envisioned sitting poolside, working on my tan, while the kids swam for hours. There would be no rushing around since most of the afterschool activities were cancelled that week.

It began with a bang. We threw my daughter’s surprise birthday party on the last day of school. Giggling, screeching girls filled our home until late that night.

I’m still sweeping up strands of fuchsia clip-on hair extensions and hot pink glitter.

After a day trip to the La Brea Tar Pits with friends, spring break stagnated. Our normally bustling cul-de-sac was eerily quiet. Many neighbors had packed up FOUR KIDS and headed out, seeking AND A DOG either snow or sun.

By Elizabeth Bottiaux I decided we’d make our own fun. I’d take the kids to San Diego for a quick overnight getaway while my husband worked. After pulling an allnighter to ensure nobody had to go naked, wear underpants inside out or take a dirty laundry dive, we were off to find our FUN spring break.

By the time we arrived in SD, everyone was ranting and raving about how starving they were. Driving our oversized SUV full of crabby kids in a crowded metropolitan area full of one way only signs proved difficult. Finally, we found a suitable watering hole.

While impatiently awaiting our food, kids visited the restroom in shifts. Shift #1 returned to the table sprinkled in water and reported that the toilet had shot water at them. I somehow managed to convince them we didn’t need to leave immediately

to shower and change clothes, and a family friendly explanation of what and how a bidet is used followed. The hole-in-the-wall Mediterranean fare was delicious and plentiful. One of the kids finding a small black spider meandering through his yellow rice? Not so much. Our lunch came to an abrupt halt and we hightailed it out of there, feeling a bit queasy.

We checked into the hotel, and the kids rejoiced in jumping on the freshly made beds, watching television, waving to passersby below from the balcony, drawing on the notepads, playing “hotel” on the unplugged room phone and making coffee...just because.

Sunshine hid behind a thick gray blanket of clouds as we ventured out for dinner. The bickering returned and after threatening to ship each of the complaining offspring back to the room, we returned. Together. We warmed up in our jammies, and just as we were settling in for the night...FIRE ALARM! Through the deafening, relentless siren, I barked at the kids to find their shoes.

The girls immediately began sobbing and dashed around the room gathering belongs they didn’t want to burn. Seeing their sisters fall apart, the boys’ tears began flowing. I tried shouting over the horrendous racket that it was probably a false alarm. My voice went unheard.

And then as quickly as the chaos ensued, it ended. We got word that indeed it had been a false alarm. Nevertheless, all kids were thoroughly rattled and begged to return home. Nope. We were going to stay and have fun, darn it.

So, we talked about what had happened.

“Mommy said the F word,” one kid offered in a hushed and questioning voice. Oh. That. I did recall some forbidden word escaping my lips when it all began. Shoot.

“Well, mommies make mistakes too,”

The next morning was rainy and cold.

We got dressed in our skimpy summer clothes and headed out for morning gelato. Why not? I was finally ready to admit that our getaway had been an epic failure.

With no umbrella or warm clothes, I made the executive decision to leave that morning. Home had never sounded better.

But to my surprise, the kids wanted to stay. As I listened to each of them recount their favorite parts of the trip, it actually sounded like they’d enjoyed themselves.

Really? It certainly hadn’t been what I’d envisioned.

The ups and downs are all part of it. Life.

My kids didn’t need our vacation to be epic.

They didn’t need perfection. Through all the bumps, they’d found the fun.

Graduation Leads to an Education, Learning Curve

I

t’s that time of year—again. With spring break’s festivities finished, college seniors start counting down the days until their greatest celebration yet—graduation.

I remember as a mom of toddlers sometimes thinking the days seemed so long and then as a mom of teens the nights seemed even longer, but somehow the years always seemed short.

It feels like yesterday we were moving our oldest son into his freshman dorm and waving a tearful goodbye. Then I blinked and four years flew by.

As my oldest son graduates from supported student to autonomous adult, in a weird way I feel as though I’m graduating, too. Obviously, my son will be the one in the cap and gown next month; and as he crosses the stage to accept his diploma, I’ll be sitting silently in my seat, as requested.

My son’s grownup responsibilities and calendar will soon determine our time together and I’ll no longer be the mom calling the shots. My son’s graduation frees him from the confines of a classroom, yet I’m about to be schooled.

Soon-to-be college graduates preparing to trade tuition and textbook payments for 401ks and income taxes feel enormous pressure to have their futures planned.

Their stress is fueled by enduring months of the constant question they dread: “What are your plans after college?”

Plans or not, graduating college seniors face good and bad news. According to a recent survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, this year employers expect to hire 5.2 percent more graduates than they hired last year.

The job market may be up but so are housing costs. Current seniors hoping to call the San Francisco Bay Area home might find jobs spurred by Silicon Valley, but they’ll pay approximately $3,500 a month for a one-bedroom apartment in the city—and Siri can’t provide assistance.

U.S. Census data shows approximately 45 percent of recent college graduates

return to the nest. It’s a statistic that came into play at this month’s Masters Tournament. My husband watches the golf competitions every year and he called my attention to an interview with professional golfer, 24-year-old Smylie Kaufman.

The Masters rookie resided in relative obscurity until he shot up the leader board in the final days of the tournament and scored an interview with sportscaster Jim Nantz. Questioned by Nantz, Kaufman reluctantly acknowledged, on national television, that he still lives at home with his parents.

After a short silence, I heard my son say, “Uh, yeah, that’s not gonna happen.”

My son’s right; I might be in denial. He’s accepted a job.

Upon my son’s graduation he becomes gainfully employed. Even better, his new employer wants him to start two days after he graduates—in a city located in the middle of the country with no direct flights.

My son can’t wait to graduate from college and get going on life’s awaiting adventures. Me, I’m reluctantly graduating from parenting to the parent of an adult and facing the ensuing uncertainty.

The only thing I know is we’ll both learn that some of our greatest lessons lie ahead.

Summer Without Scully, Dodgers a Frightening Reality Southern California baseball fans might miss out on legendary broadcaster’s final season

id you see it?

There was Magic Johnson, Don Newcombe, Sandy Koufax and Clayton Kershaw on the field of Dodgers Stadium on a perfect sun-soaked spring day at Chavez Ravine. The impressive group of Los Angeles icons was there on April 12 to honor another Los Angeles sports legend.

When he appeared, striding toward home plate, the crowd erupted, sending its love and gratitude to the 88-year-old living legend that is Vin Scully.

The day marked Scully’s 67th and final Opening Day as the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball broadcast, and everyone showed up to pay respect to the pope of LA sports. It was an epic moment.

Too bad many of us in Southern California weren’t able to see it live. I had to watch it hours later online, where it had been condensed to a 45-second video clip.

The Dodgers have been noticeably absent from the television screens of area baseball fans for two years going on three.

Outside of the occasional nationally televised game, those who do not subscribe to Time Warner Cable cannot watch the Boys in Blue and, in turn, cannot hear Scully.

In 2014 the Dodgers and Time Warner Cable inked a 25-year contract worth $8.3 billion to create the Time Warner Cable SportsNet LA channel, which owns exclusive rights to air Dodgers games.

The bad news for roughly 70 percent of the Southern California market, according to ESPN, is that Time Warner Cable is not available in many areas and the other major cable providers do not have a deal in place with Time Warner to include SportsNet LA in a package.

Despite Time Warner Cable cutting the cost of SportsNet LA by 30 percent on March 29 in an attempt to appease other major cable providers, no one is budging.

The last two years without the Dodgers have been tough for fans, but now that Scully is gearing up for his final year behind the microphone, this has become a downright travesty. The greedy shortsided battle between cable providers and the team is robbing us of experiencing a regional treasure.

respected and loved sports broadcaster of all time.

No one can delve into the past and relate it to the present like Vin. When Scully begins a story with a line like, “That play

by Yasiel Puig reminds me of a time when …” you better be paying attention. You are about to be taken to hardball school, and the teacher witnessed the play he’s talking about in person and he remembers what the count was, what the weather was like and what he ate for lunch that day.

No one can tell a story quite like Scully.

The man can make you laugh, think and dream all in the span of nine innings. He meshes his personal life and recollections into his play-by-play in such a conversational manner you think he’s talking directly to you.

If you don’t have Time Warner Cable, the only way to hear Scully is to turn on the radio, where he does a simulcast during the first three innings BREAZEALE of home games. I did that BANTER

By Steve last year as often as posBreazeale sible, fearing that 2015 was going to be Scully’s swan song. But it just didn’t cut it. Three innings is simply not enough time to appreciate a Scully broadcast. Heck, some of Scully’s stories last multiple innings, and by the time the fourth inning rolls around, you could be left with only half a story and no closure.

A deal between Time Warner Cable and another provider could happen this season.

The Lakers tried the same holdout maneuver with their own Time Warner Cable channel several years ago, but the outrage of fans and outside pressure was too much and all parties came to terms quickly. But corporate greed is a feisty beast, and this situation with the Dodgers looks bleak.

Good thing I have a temporary solution.

I plan on going to several Dodgers home games this season, my transistor radio in tow (yes, I still have one), so I can listen to Vin call a game and see what he is seeing.

I’ll watch, and listen to Scully make the game that much more vivid.

San Clemente Muni Wins South County Cup Golf Tournament

Golfers representing the San Clemente Municipal Golf Course won the 2016 South County Cup Golf Tournament on April 17.

The tournament featured members of the Muni teeing it up against players from San Juan Hills Golf Club, Shorecliffs Golf Club and Bella Collina Towne & Golf Club over a two-day stretch.

The event was similar to the Ryder Cup, with team-play matches taking place on April 16 and individual match play on April 17.

The event was held at San Clemente Municipal for the first time and its players proved home course knowledge comes in handy.

Golfers faced 40 mph gusts of wind on the first day of competition but despite the tough conditions, San Clemente Municipal held a two-point advantage over San Juan Hills after day one. On April 17, San Clemente Municipal dominated in singles, winning 12 of a possible 16 points for a winning score of 23. San Juan Hills placed second with 17.5 points. Bella Collina (12.5) and Shorecliffs (11) took third and fourth, respectively.

San Clemente Municipal’s triumph is the second consecutive year in which the event was won by the host team. Last season’s inaugural South County Cup was held at and won by Shorecliffs Golf Club.

Next year’s event is scheduled to take place at San Juan Hills Golf Club.

Dana Point Grand Prix Adds Events for 10th Installment

The Dana Point Grand Prix of Cycling will have a slightly newer look to it in 2016.

The prestigious cycling race is set to host top criterium talents as well as amateurs in the Lantern District of Dana Point April 30 to May 1.

Aside from the multiple divisions of races that will take place throughout the day, April 30 will kick off with the Killer Cove 5K Challenge and 1K Family Fun Run. Both events are new to the schedule this year.

The Killer Cove 5K Challenge will start things off at 8:30 a.m. and will send participants on a scenic route through town. The race is set to start in the Lantern District, then loop runners down into the Dana Point Harbor. On the way back from the Harbor, runners will have to go up Cove Road, which features an 18 percent grade for a quarter of a mile.

Online registration for the Killer Cove 5K Challenge is now open. Early registration cost is $35 and late registration is $40.

The 1K Family Fun Run/Walk will begin a 10 a.m. Early registration for the 1K is open and the cost is $10.

Another new addition to Saturday’s list of events will be the Light-Up the Lantern Parade of Lights. Attendees are encouraged to bring their bicycles and deck them out in lights for an 8 p.m. ride down Del Prado Avenue. The first 750 entrants will receive a free front and rear LED light, compliments of Cycleogical.

Boys Lacrosse Continues Hot Run Through League The San Clemente boys lacrosse team surged to a 17-6 South Coast League victory over Trabuco Hills behind a strong second-quarter performance on April 14.

It was the Tritons fi fth straight league victory.

San Clemente (9-8, 5-0) trailed the Mustangs 2-1 after the first quarter, but scored five unanswered goals in the second to take a 6-2 lead into the half. The San Clemente offense continued to hum in the second half and capped the game off with a seven-goal performance in the fourth quarter.

Nine different Tritons scored in the win. Matt Keany, Josh Sanchez, Branden Wilson and David Howren all scored three goals. Senior goalie Austin Boyer made 11 saves in three quarters and was replaced

by Harrison Webb in the fourth.

San Clemente will travel to play league rival Tesoro on April 21. The Tritons narrowly edged the Titans 7-6 in the teams’ first meeting on March 30.

Trabuco Hills wrapped up the season series against the Tritons following a 4-3 win on April 15. The Mustangs’ offense recorded six hits and four runs in four innings against San Clemente starter Michael McGreevy in a 4-3 victory.

The losses to Trabuco Hills put San Clemente in solo third place in the league standings. The Mustangs jumped into the No. 2 spot and San Juan Hills sits in first place.

San Clemente (12-6-1, 3-3 league) lost to Tesoro 8-5 in a Coast View Conference crossover game on April 18. The Tritons will play a crossover double header against Dana Hills at home on April 21.

The San Clemente boys volleyball team swept visiting Trabuco Hills in three sets on April 14 to move into a tie for first place in the South Coast League. The Tritons won the match 25-23, 25-21, 25-22.

San Clemente (15-7, 4-1) is tied with Tesoro at the top of the league standings.

San Clemente has been playing without a few key players due to injuries, but has got a huge boost from up and down its roster. Kyle Merrill, who has emerged as one of the team’s leading offensive players in recent weeks, recorded a team-high 15 kills against the Mustangs. Jess Hunt had nine kills and Dillon Waikle had eight.

Waikle also had nine blocks.

San Clemente will travel to play fourthplace Dana Hills on April 21.

Golf Stays in First With Win Over Chargers The San Clemente boys golf team extended its win streak to four matches on April 19 after defeating El Toro 196-228 in a South Coast League match at Shorecliffs Golf Club.

Christian Wentzel earned medalist honors for San Clemente (9-1, 6-1) after carding a 37 (+2) on the front nine.

The Tritons made a major move in the league standings last week that started with a 192-192 sixth-man scorecard tiebreaker win over Dana Hills on April 11.

San Clemente then swept Tesoro in backto-back matches.

San Clemente and Dana Hills are currently tied atop the standings with one match left to play. The Tritons will host

El Toro on April 21. The league finals tournament is scheduled to take place April 25-26.

Tritons Tennis Dominant in Title Defense The San Clemente boys tennis team captured its sixth consecutive South Coast League championship in dominant fashion this season. The Tritons (13-2, 7-0) went through league play undefeated, led by a strong mix of singles and doubles players.

Junior Michael Bott finished the league season undefeated in singles competition and Claremont Makenna-bound senior Jay Yeam lost only one match.

The doubles duo of Chris Torcaso and Tony Gregory did not lose a match in league all season and compiled a perfect 17-0 record.

Bott was scheduled to compete in the prestigious Ojai Invitational April 20-22.

The doubles team of Yeam and Caden Spencer will also compete in Ojai.

Softball Shuts Out Opposition The San Clemente softball team recorded back-to-back shutout victories over Sea View League opponents Tesoro and Trabuco Hills on April 14 and April 19, respectively.

The wins got the Tritons (8-8-1, 2-0) off to an undefeated start to league play. San Clemente will host San Juan Hills on April 21.

Girls Lacrosse Takes Down Diablos The San Clemente girls lacrosse team defeated Mission Viejo 11-4 on April 19 in a nonleague match. The win ended an eight-game losing skid for the Tritons (5-9, 0-5).

San Clemente will host Tesoro on April 21.

Sears Lands Offer From UCLA, Texas A&M San Clemente quarterback Jack Sears landed two big offers from UCLA and Texas A&M this week.

The Bruins offered Sears after watching him practice on April 19. The Texas A&M offer came on April 20.

Sears’ list of collegiate offers now stands at 17 and head coach Jaime Ortiz said he expects more to flood in over the next few weeks.

The spring observation period has yielded Sears plenty of offers, and Ortiz said San Diego State University, Northwestern and Cal were all in attendance at the Tritons’ practice on April 19 to watch the rising quarterback. Sears already holds offers from both Northwestern and San Diego State.

rofessional surfer Nathan “Nate” Yeomans grew up in San Clemente, learning how to surf at the age of 4, becoming one of the area’s most talented groms and then embarking on a successful pro career. Now the father of Isabella, 3, and Isaac, 2, Nate is passing the love of the sport—bestowed on him by his father—to his children, and couldn’t be happier about it.

“I am so happy to be able to see the joy learning to surf brings, in the simplicity of watching my kids,” Nate said. “It’s like I get to relive it through them. Obviously I love surfing but to see the beginning stages of that love starting in your own kids, in their smiles, it kind of comes full circle. It’s pretty awesome and I feel really blessed.”

While Nate is having fun reflecting on his own gromdom, Isabella and Isaac really enjoy beach time with their dad and can’t seem to get enough of it. And although Isaac is still too young to go out, he loves pretending to paddle and ride waves on the sand.

“I have only paddled out with my daughter about six or seven times and she already loves it,” Nate said. “The last time we went out, she was shivering cold and still didn’t want to come in. She asks me every day when we can go again. I haven’t taken little dude out yet, but my wife has to hold him back because he always tries to follow us.”

Nate and his wife Jenny began giving Isabella swimming lessons at 18 months old and plan to start Isaac at the same age.

“I am very careful not to get over excited and take Isabella out when the waves are even a little bit too big,” Nate said. “I don’t want her to get freaked out … Even though she can swim, I am always careful not to get her in over her head.”

As far as whether Nate will actively try to bring his little ones up to follow in his competitive surfing footsteps, he said that will only be a part of the plan if and when they express an interest in pursuing it.

“If it’s something they’re in to, it’s cool, but if not, that’s fine too,” he said.—Andrea Swayne

San Clemente and San Juan Hills high schools win Scholastic Surf Series state championships

ocal high school teams came out on top at this year’s Scholastic Surf Series High School State Surfing Championships, April 16 through 18 in Oceanside.

The SSS—a division of the Western Surfing Association—high school competition season came to an exciting conclusion at the Oceanside Harbor south jetty with San Clemente High School and San Juan Hills High School crowned state champions in Section A and Section B competition, respectively.

San Clemente and San Juan Hills emerged victorious from a highly competitive field of 40 California teams hailing from Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay to San Diego Both the weather and surf cooperated providing excellent conditions for the threeday event. The offshore wind each morning brought 3- to 5-foot surf for the majority of the event. Although Sunday’s waves were a bit smaller—2 to 3 feet—the ocean still set a good stage for competition.

SSS officials were very happy to have such favorable conditions for the season wrap-up, after working through a season plagued with cancelations due to stormy weather.

Two local surfers took home top honors in individual competition: Racheal Tilly, from San Clemente High in the Women’s Longboard division and Walker Carvalho, from San Juan Hills High, in Coed Bodyboard.

In addition to team and individual trophies, two special awards were presented.

The first was the Sportsmanship Award given to San Marcos High School student Maya Saulino, and the second, the Special Accomplishment Award, given to Tilly (Capistrano Beach resident) for being the seven-time SSS longboard season champ— three times in middle school and four times in high school.
