During the Tuesday night City Council meeting, Councilwoman Lori Donchak brought a motion to discuss the aspects of establishing election districts in San Clemente at the April 5 City Council meeting.

Donchak’s motion failed to receive a second.

“The four southwest (Council) members wouldn’t even discuss the issue and that shows why we need representatives,” Brad Malamud, one of the people who co-filed the initiative, said on Wednesday. “I’m not even asking them to vote for it or favor it, but they should at least discuss it.” —EH

Five things San Clemente should know this week City Establishes Permit, Nuisance Fees for ShortTerm Living Units THE LATEST: San Clemente City Council voted to approve permit fees for shortterm living units as well as penalties for excessive “nuisance” calls.

To obtain a permit, an applicant must pay $105 annually. If a location has more than one nuisance call within 365 consecutive days, the owner of the STLU must pay $115 if a police officer responds and $50 if a code enforcement employee responds.

When the city passed a transient occupancy tax ordinance requiring STLUs to register with the city, council needed to be able to enforce the law by keeping track of each STLU that registers in the city.

Two applications will need to be filed: one for taxes and one for zoning compliance after the Planning Commission sends its recommendation to City Council, which is expected to take place soon.

Initiative Filed with City for Districting Elections THE LATEST: An initiative headed by resident Jim Bieber was filed with four other residents on Monday to the city of San Clemente.

Bieber has been at odds with some of the City Council since the STLU ordinance was proposed. After arguments at multiple council meetings, he presented a map that shows the general area of the current City Council addresses. Bieber has argued because the majority of the council lives in the southwest area of San Clemente, the current elected officials do not efficiently represent other areas of San Clemente.

THE LATEST: Although City Council was poised to quickly pass the newly amended sign ordinance after proposals were added to it following the March 1 discussion, two small clauses were looked at once again regarding whether a sign could remain after a business takes over and consideration of the new functionality of a business after it has been exchanged.

The council voted 4-1 with Councilwoman Lori Donchak once again dissenting to the ordinance, saying the regulations are too restrictive on businesses.

Council members approved to change proposed language in the ordinance that allows business owners to keep their signs when changing or exchanging the business so long as the type of business remains the same. Another sign application would have to be brought to the city if it was determined to be significantly altered.

“If there was a change in intensity (volume or business type) we would have to evaluate and would have to see what intensity has changed in a broad spectrum of events,” said Sean Nicholas, associate city planner.

The controversy regarding “pole signs,” which are defined as freeway-engaging signs, has stirred emotions of local business owners who have had them in place for decades. The new sign ordinance will require the signs to be kept intact as they are, but the city will not require them to be taken down.

No new pole signs will be allowed to be constructed.

Part of the process in applying for a sign that was removed was the sign exemption process, which councilmembers said had been “controversial” because it was subjective to relative areas.

Motorcyclist Dies in Collision on Avenida Pico THE LATEST: A second fatal motorcycle crash occurred this week in the San Clemente area when a man crashed his motorcycle on Tuesday about 12:50 p.m. at the intersection of Avenida Pico and Calle Del Cerro, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The intersection was closed off for hours while OCSD canvassed the scene.

WHAT’S NEXT: At this time, the incident is under investigation and the name of the victim has not been released by OCSD. No other vehicles are suspected to have been involved. —EH

Orange County Confirms First Zika Virus THE LATEST: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed an Orange County man in his 40s tested positive for Zika virus.

“The individual, a Costa Mesa resident … contracted the virus in late January during travel to Central America and presented symptoms in early February,” a press release from Orange County Health Care Agency and the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District stated. “He was not seriously ill and has recovered.

The Health Care Agency has contacted the individual to provide counseling to prevent transmission.”

People who contract the Zika virus usually have no symptoms, but there are some who have reported sustaining fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes.

“The greatest concern is related to the possible association between Zika infection in pregnant women and microcephaly (abnormally small head and brain) in newborns,” the release stated.

“There is no vaccine to protect against Zika infection,” Dr. Matthew Zahn, director of Disease Control and Epidemiology at Orange County Health Care Agency, stated in a press release. “People who travel to areas with active transmission of Zika must take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Local transmission has not been detected in the United States, the release stated, but the invasive Aedes mosquitoes that can transmit Zika virus are present in Orange County.

Motorcyclist Killed in Hit-and-run Collision on Doheny Park Road PCH On-ramp

A

32-year-old motorcyclist died Sunday following a hit-and-run collision on the Doheny Park Road on-ramp to northbound Pacific Coast Highway. The motorcyclist has been identified as Joseph Salazar of Mira Loma, according to an Orange County Coroner press release.

At about 4:42 p.m. on March 13, Salazar, driving a 2016 Harley Davidson, and someone driving a Dodge Sprinter van entered the northbound Doheny San Clemente Times March 17-23, 2016

Park Road on-ramp to Pacific Coast Highway, with the van entering ahead of the motorcycle. As Salazar approached the curve on the single-lane ramp, he applied the brakes and skidded approximately 40 feet before losing control of his motorcycle. Salazar was ejected from the motorcycle, the press release said. The driver of the Dodge van struck Salazar, stopping briefly before fleeing the scene.

Salazar was transported to Mission Hospital. Despite wearing a full-face helmet, he did not recover from his injuries and

died three hours later.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating whether alcohol and drugs may have played a role in the fatal collision.

CHP is asking for help identifying the hit-and-run driver. The van was described as an older model, white in color with black trim—it may have damage on the right side.

Market Shares Southern California craftspeople gather every second Sunday

clectic items from artisans and craftspeople pop up every second Sunday of the month in a nook of San Clemente’s North Beach.

Jess Lea, owner of The Marketplace, started the monthly event last July, when her shop was known as The Yurt.

“We started The Marketplace when we had The Yurt, but we focused a little bit more on the storefront,” Lea said. “I decided to revamp it and make it more open to the public and support California brands and the people who make them.”

Lea said she plans to make items available online within the next month.

“Instead of going with the niche of yoga and spiritual community, we’re helping people who make things get more exposure,” Lea said.

Artists and craftspeople from San Diego to Los Angeles County have joined in the weekend affair, Lea said, and the increasing number of people who attend The Marketplace has shown the demand for handmade items.

“There’s just something unique about it,” Lea said. “There’s a nice community, and everyone is kind of family here. I think people are ready to start spending money on the state and people who are making things by hand.”

To rent a 4-by-6-foot table is $50 for the day. The only requirements are products must be made by hand, the craftsperson must have a business license and they must take their business seriously. Lea said if people need help building their business,

she offers her marketing services.

“It’s kind of an incubator to help people who are wanting to get into stores,” Lea said. “It’s like this network where there’s no competition but a lot of support.”

So far Lea said at least two or three businesses have been asked to sell their goods in brick-and-mortar shops.

“People like to find these unique products and know when they buy clothes, for example, they know they won’t see someone walking down the street wearing the same thing,” Lea said.

Vendors Cody Splane, the creator of EcoScentric Candle Co., said he was sharing a drink with a friend out of a mason jar and was inspired to make the candles using all-natural soy wax and package them in reusable materials. One year later, he was working at Jack’s Surfboards and started making the candles for the business. Eventually he was able to venture out on his own.

Social media helped Splane get involved with The Marketplace.

“I just like the vibes and the beach community, where everyone is really nice and seems to like the candles,” Splane said.

Splane said he prefers selling his candles at The Marketplace because he’s able to speak with the customers in person rather than selling in bulk to a larger retailer. He said he tries to sell to smaller shops run by a few people—“mom-and-pop shops,” he said.

“It’s more personal; people walk up to you and you can explain the product. They get to smell them, and it’s just more fun to

Owner Arielle Salsa of The Pretty Cult and her associate Helen Schmidt sell their Sisters of the Moon clothing line with large tarot cards sewn to the backs of flannel shirts.

“Through an interesting mix of events, we started working together,” Schmidt said. “We’ve always just had a really good response with the shirts. The card itself holds a lot of power and a lot of energy.

What’s kind of interesting is seeing what a person is drawn to and it usually relates to what’s going on in their life.”

Salsa said she wanted to work with clothing products that cater to men and women. When searching for a place to display her clothing she said she wanted to find a place that’s accommodating to her style.

“We’re doing another market at the end of the month, and I saw other sellers who came here,” Salsa said. “I really liked the aesthetic and thought that it would work for us. We want to do more in Orange County and we wanted to try it.” SC

County to Host Public Forum on Mental Health Orange County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Lisa Bartlett and Supervisor Andrew Do will host a public hearing from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 25, on Orange County’s mental health system.

Bartlett and Do are part of an ad-hoc committee established last year to address programs and needs within the County’s behavioral health system.

In total, the County is responsible for overseeing more than 200 programs and services, ranging from case management to crisis intervention.

18th Annual SOCSA Opera Night Gala at the Soka Performing Arts Center The South Orange County School of the Arts at Dana Hills High School continues its annual Gala tradition this year with “Opera Night 2016: Among the Stars,” to be held at The Soka Performing Arts Center. This year marks Opera Night’s 18th year celebrating opera and classical music, dance and contemporary art.

Opera Night students this year hail from as far north as Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, to Mission Vista High School in San Diego County. CUSD high school participants include students from Dana Hills, Capistrano Valley, Tesoro and San Clemente high schools.

Adding to the Opera Gala performance, varying styles of ballet will be performed

by SOCSA Dance Production, led by Director Brittany Casey. Casey’s students will demonstrate different techniques and variations of ballet work including a traditional pointe piece, a contemporary ballet piece, an earthy ballet-inspired performance number to Umoja by Imani Winds and a pas de quoi featuring two male and two female ballet dancers.

The nonprofit organization iHOPEoc, Inc., which offers basic needs and referral services to the homeless and working poor, announced on Monday it will resume its mobile shower program, and officials said they plan to focus on “in-the-field outreach,” according to a press release.

Volunteer training to assist with the program will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, in Capistrano Beach. The locations are to be determined, officials said. Volunteers can email nancy@ihopeoc.org to find out where to go. A paid security guard will be onsite.

Volunteers who can assist with the showers and/or transporting the shower trailer to serving locations are invited to attend.

New volunteers as well as former iHOPE volunteers will need to attend a training.

After leaving their San Clemente location in 2014, iHOPE officials said they were unable to find a permanent location for operations.

“To that end, iHOPE has transitioned operation of its San Clemente-based thrift store, iHOPE Treasures, to the non-profit Illumination Foundation,” the release stated. “Instead, caseworkers have been meeting in the field—in partnership with Welcome INN—assisting with services designed to help the less fortunate get back on their feet and become selfsufficient. Letters to the Editor MEMORIALCARE SHOULD SELL HOSPITAL TO ANOTHER HEALTHCARE PROVIDER LYLE GIALAMAS, MSN, FNP-BC, San Clemente

I am writing in response to the recent announcement by Saddleback Memorial that they are closing the San Clemente hospital and its emergency services May 31.

When I became aware of this decision to convert the emergency department/hospital to an advanced urgent care, ambulatory and surgery center, I became extremely concerned about the future of healthcare not only for San Clemente but surrounding communities as well. Physicians and nurses who work and live in this community immediately met and discussed these concerns and realized MemorialCare had provided the community with their vision but the truth of the impact of the closure of the emergency facility had not been shared with the citizens.

Having been an emergency department nurse, emergency department nurse manager, coordinator for prehospital care and inter-facility critical care transport operations manager prior to becoming a family primary care nurse practitioner provided me with the background to understand exactly what this closure would mean to our citizens and surrounding communities.

As healthcare providers, we decided to provide our communities with the research data available and allow our friends and neighbors to make an informed decision about their future healthcare needs.

In this fashion, Save San Clemente Hospital was formed with the intent of assuring the information would be shared with those interested in learning. Our website and Facebook pages were developed and research data posted. What is most compelling is the correlation between time to care and outcome.

Time to care includes not only travel time to the closest emergency department but also time in the waiting room or for the triage nurse or transfer from the paramedics to the receiving team.

There is no disputing the increase in mortality rates as time to care increases.

There is also no disputing as the 14,000 homes in Rancho Mission Viejo are completed the increase in population density will impact time to care. The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have many studies available online to provide all of us with an unbiased picture of our San Clemente Times March 17-23, 2016

future without our emergency department and hospital. Ware Malcomb, an architectural firm, donated their services and designed a less expensive facility than MemorialCare had planned that could not only maintain services while being built but would provide MemorialCare with the ambulatory facilities, surgical services, medical office spaces and urgent care facility they wanted. It was called the “Win-Win” alternative because the ED and hospital were smaller than is currently in place.

Indeed, MemorialCare supported the bills by both Assemblyman Bill Brough and State Senator Patricia Bates to maintain a free-standing ED as they acknowledge the need for emergency services in South Orange County.

Although MemorialCare does not believe an emergency department and hospital are viable in the new healthcare climate, there are other hospital groups who disagree and would love to partner in health with the communities of South Orange County.

Now that MemorialCare has announced closure, Save San Clemente Hospital and its 12,000 supporters hope they will decide to sell the facility to a hospital group interested in sharing our healthcare futures with us.

On Sunday, March 6, I drove past an obviously troubled young man walking south on El Camino Real without clothes.

My heart sank for this poor soul in obvious need of assistance. My initial reaction was to call the police. As my husband placed the call, I watched a woman follow the man and take pictures of him as he walked around dazed and confused. It was horrifying to watch.

This is someone’s son, brother, father or friend, and this woman chose to exploit him. Out of nowhere came a young gentleman offering clothes to the distressed man, and my heart soared! This is the answer. So simple, why didn’t I think of it?

I have reflected on this day many times since I witnessed it. I applaud you, young man; the compassion and humanity you showed was remarkable and moving and has left a lasting impression on me. Compassion is always the answer.

Indeed, 56 percent of respondents to a GlobalMeatNews poll said that they were or are reducing meat intake. U.S. per capita red meat consumption has dropped by more than 16 percent since 1999.

Mainstream publications like Parade, Better Homes and Gardens and Eating Well are touting vegan recipes. Even the financial investment community is betting on plant-based meat start-ups, like Beyond Meat or Impossible Foods, while warning clients about the upcoming “death of meat.”

The reasons are ample. Last year, the World Health Organization found cancer to be associated with consumption of processed meats.

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee recommended reduced meat consumption. The media keeps exposing atrocities perpetrated on factory farms.

And animal agriculture remains a chief contributor to climate change and water scarcity and pollution.

Each of us should celebrate our own advent of spring by checking out plant-based foods at our supermarkets and vegan recipes on the Internet.

Why India is the Most Important Ally Americans Should Cultivate

A

n emerging colossus on the international stage, India is an opportunity America should not miss.

In a world of strategic competitors, restless allies and distant adversaries, India should be viewed as the top potential candidate in America’s global quest for stable, free-market trading partners.

At first glance, the two giant nations seem unfathomably far apart. Americans are seen as cowboys. Indians are seen as, well, Indians. But beneath the obvious differences lie surprising and symbolic similarities long ignored. A capitalist economy, a democratically elected government with western values and mindset, India is an English-speaking homeland to 1.2 billion souls, most of them yearning for the very consumer lifestyle Americans would like to export. As the world’s seventh largest nation and the second most populous, India, more than China, offers a true potential consumer market.

Educated, industrious and entrepreneurial, the impact expatriate Indians have had on the U.S. is staggering: 12 percent of all American scientists are Indians. An astounding one third of all doctors, NASA scientists and Microsoft and IBM employees are U.S. residents from India.

British influence, inculcated by 200 years of imposed Pax Britannica, has fashioned a rare hybrid of Eastern culture and Western institutions. Courts, corporations and bureaucracies are as familiar to New Delhi as New York. Even with more than 120 major dialects, English is universally spoken across the subcontinent, the official language for business, law, government and science.

India is not without myriad problems, of course. The Times of India has said India is the only country where everyone is in a rush but no one is ever on time, where one has to look both ways to cross a oneway road. Cities are often populated and then planned.

While the family is a strong unit in India, there is also the old joke that success is relative—more success, more relatives (frequently first in line at the patronage trough). Often deeply embedded, these serious weaknesses have repeatedly kept

American business at bay.

But punctuality, traffic congestion and a lack of urban planning is hardly unique to India. Corruption and health and safety issues have not kept the U.S. from embracing far more odious partners. Shifting production to India would reduce China’s current financial power without economic disruption on our side. India could use the help, and we could gain a valuable ally.

The entire northeastern rim is a contiguous border with China, a barrier to Beijing’s rising belligerence and North Korea’s lunatic leader. To the northwest sits a Pakistan bristling with nuclear armaments and an Afghanistan still full of Taliban terrorist camps. Facing eastward across the Bay of Bengal lies Myanmar, ruled by hostile tyrants. Just six hundred miles from its western border, an unpredictable Iran vies for regional supremacy.

Across the Arabian Sea, Somalia’s brutal warlords and Yemen’s pirates and rebels wreak destruction.

America might note that along with its 3 million men in uniform, Indian nuclear warheads point at each of these nations— a reminder of the strategic value India poses. This vast emerging nation-state is vital to our future and the world’s. As the premiere English-speaking, free-market democracy in the region, this critical Asian ally needs America to help build every available bridge between us.

At the Movies: Abrams Delivers with Latest ‘Cloverfield’ Installment

ight years ago, J.J. Abrams produced the disaster movie Cloverfield and helped resurrect the shaky cam, found-footage horror technique to epic proportions, setting a new standard for viral marketing. Quickly growing a cult following and paving the way for films like Chronicle (2012), the hit movie had found its place in pop culture. But then, out of nowhere, Abrams not only announces a new Cloverfield feature, but also drops a full teaser only two months before release.

Titled 10 Cloverfield Lane, the new picture is surprisingly brilliant and heart-racing.

After leaving her boyfriend to start over, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is sideswiped by another car, crashing off the road.

When she awakens, she finds herself in an underground bunker. Her “rescuer,” Howard (John Goodman), a doomsday prepper, claims he saved her from the poisonous fallout of an attack. He keeps her locked in the bunker warning that the air is now too polluted to go outside.

From what can be gathered in articles and

interviews, the Cloverfield franchise is more of a shared universe with different characters and stories rather than direct continuity in plot and leads. With that in mind, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a great theater experience just like the first movie was, but with its own tone, direction and narrative. Goodman and Winstead are superb, and director Dan Trachtenberg debuts a standout effort with a unique, crazy twist. For fans of original suspense-thrillers and not a fan of shaky cameras like the 2008 movie, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a must-see. SC

They started doing bespoke and then moved into larger-scale sales.

All products, they said, are made from found or reclaimed materials.

“We build relationships with different brands and find their fabrics they’re not using anymore, then go to thrift shops and hunt for whatever we can find,” Zarif said.

“We might dye them or do surface design.”

The two of them said they were always “secondhand shoppers,” which gave them the insight of where to find the best unused or repurposed materials.

“The idea is to sort of disrupt the fast fashion model—those who steal the highfashion trends and bring them to market quick and make a bunch of product,” Alejandro said. “What they don’t sell goes into the landfills.”

He said when the cost of living is going up but the cost of some clothing goes down, it stands to reason the quality of fast fashion sinks with it.

“We want to build something that lasts a long time,” Zarif said.

Since Zarif and Alejandro only have themselves and a couple employees, custom bespoke clothing from Mulch California can take about two weeks from the time of fitting to product completion.

A few professional athletes and entertainers have contacted Mulch for their custom clothing.

“It was a 30-year love affair with wine, and I’d been looking around for the last year and a half to find a place,” Trebing said. “It’s kind of a second career for me, and I wanted to do something in wine.”

Originally working in television and film, he eventually moved into marketing for plant nurseries and large wholesale growers.

Most of the wines he sells by the glass and by the bottle are from California, Oregon and Washington state, but Trebing said he will also have imports from France and Italy as well as craft beers. Barnoa will eventually start selling paninis, soups and other food to complement the wine bar experience. Private events can also be scheduled.

“It’s been sort of a transition from the old inventory and it’ll be a while before we have it all done,” Trebing said. “We want to be able to carry boutique wines and expand our bottle shop.”

Trebing and his employees are knowledgeable about their products, and he said that customers are always welcome to talk with them about the wine. SC

ach year on March 2, elementary school children across the country celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss by participating in the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day. It’s been numerous years since I circled that date on my calendar, so it surprised me to receive an invitation to join the celebration this month.

My invitation came from Mrs. Kelly Barreira and her amazing class of kindergartners at Truman Benedict Elementary School.

I met Kelly more than 15 years ago on my older son’s first day of first grade. We’d just moved to San Clemente and I didn’t know anybody. I also didn’t know how fortunate my son was to be assigned to Kelly’s

In Kelly’s classroom, once again, I marveled at her calm control of the excited kindergartners: with a melodic clap of her hands, they immediately quieted and listened for instruction.

We took our seats, and small hands shot into the air as eager students awaited their chance to speak. One by one, they took turns introducing themselves and revealing their favorite kinds of books: several of the young scholars like reading about horses and dinosaurs while some prefer paleontology—yes, paleontology.

Then came my turn to read “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” to the bright group of learners. They sat in silence, absorbing the rhythmic language and engaging story by the celebrated Dr. Seuss.

The 56-page book delivers a message of optimism and encouragement. Seuss writes that life’s a journey full of bumps and slumps, but proposes that perseverance prevails and he promises success (“98 and ¾ percent guaranteed”).

Seuss’s carefully crafted graduation send-off resonates with students from grade school to grad school. More than 25

years after its publication and with more than 10 million copies in print, it’s not surprising that over the course of their education, some college graduates claim to have received as many as half a dozen copies of the Dr. Seuss classic.

I’m tempted, but I’ll resist the urge to giftwrap the book for my older son upon his college graduation.

While the book is motivating, my son is sure to find the perennial favorite an irritation not an inspiration. The only paper gift he’s interested in receiving has pictures of presidents printed on it, not images of animated Hakken-Kraks. In two short months, he’ll leave his college campus behind and focus on his future and the path ahead. Soon he’ll be on his way and, oh, the places he’ll go!

Without the need to outshine each other, calmness transcends. I’ve marveled at my kids’ behavioral transformation when they’re alone. They act like completely different individuals. Thoughtful conversation replaces heated yelling.

A dear friend recently asked what advice I might have to pass along to another friend of hers. The friend was in labor with her fourth baby. Without much thought I said, “regular alone time with each child.”

That’s one of the best kept secrets about how to stay sane while raising four spritely offspring. Alone time can be helpful in resetting a child’s bad behavior or poor choices. Any family with two or more kids can reap rewards from one-on-one time.

When the kids were younger and clung to me like monkeys, one-on-one quality time was a little different. Maybe it was reading a story while the others watched television in another room. It often meant doing a craft with an older child while their younger sibling napped. Sometimes it was baking cookies together while other

kids played outside.

Recently I carved out “QT” with our oldest daughter. She and I were able to talk in a calm atmosphere without constant interruptions. We were able to bypass the constant sister bickering and connect in a way that simply isn’t possible with siblings present. I could listen without feeling guilty about ignoring another child.

One-on-one time can be nothing more elaborate than driving home from water polo practice with only my little swimmer in the car. It’s rare, but once in a while all the FOUR KIDS stars align and it’s just us.

My younger daughter found me last night as I was trying to sneak a quick shut-eye. At first, I was irritated that I’d been discovered. But when she sheepishly

admitted that she wanted to snuggle with me, I welcomed her under the warm covers. She simply needed me to listen with undivided attention as she categorically reviewed all of her body’s owies from head to toe. As we snuggled in bed, I could feel the day’s struggles melting away.

Kids grow up fast. By spending one-onone time with each child, a clear message is conveyed. That child understands that they matter to you. I want each of my children to know they are loved and important.

Building the Perfect Bracket A (not so) comprehensive guide to navigating your way through picking the unpredictable NCAA Basketball Tournament

I

f there is anything years of filling out NCAA Basketball Tournament brackets has taught me, it’s that I don’t know much—but I try.

In my bracket, I get a few of the latestage picks right by going with the usual suspects (I’m looking at you, Duke), but about halfway through the tournament my bracket becomes more busted than the majority of MLB players from the early 2000’s, which is to say bloated and full of shame.

I don’t claim to be an expert on college basketball, but I have wasted BREAZEALE plenty of time and lost BANTER plenty of Washingtons

I know the tournament starts today, but if you’re like me, there is nothing like waiting until the last minute and frantically filling out your bracket with total confidence.

And, no, the so-called “First Four” play-in

games, which took place March 15-16, do not count as part of picking a bracket in my book. No one should get bonus points for picking Florida Gulf Coast over Fairmont Dickinson. If you went to either of those schools, I apologize. The real run through the 64-team bracket begins today.

Whether you want to win money, be the genius of the office for a week or stick it to your buddies, we all want the gratification of seemingly mastering an unmasterable art, and I am here to help you.

But before we all attain the glory of having picked a solid bracket, we must first go over some ground rules. Forget analyzing team tendencies, strengths and records.

Those are for suckers. For a truly heroic effort, we must delve deeper and apply some unconventional tactics to gain that winning edge.

Rule No. 1: Be Loyal. You’re scanning your bracket and suddenly remember that

your uncle went to Notre Dame? Boom.

Pick them! Better yet, your grandfather once shook the hand of the head coach at USC back in 1968 and never fails to remind you of what a nice young gentleman he was? Go all in on the Trojans.

Conversely, your grandfather once tried to shake the hand of the USC coach back in ’68 and got left hanging by that arrogant whippersnapper? By all means, feel free to pick against them. This irrational tip comes in handy when searching for whatever slim mental advantage you feel you might have in, say, picking a No. 8 vs.

No. 9 matchup in the first round.

Rule No. 2: Be Bold. Get frisky with a few of your picks in the first round. Just about every year we see a No. 12 seed upset a No. 5, or an 11 triumph over a 6. Sprinkle a few of those upsets into your bracket and get ready to reap a few rewards. Fun fact: From 2008 to 2015, No. 12 seeds have won

SWIMMING AND DIVING San Clemente native Carlye Townsend helped lead the Northern Arizona University women’s swimming and diving team to its third straight Western Athletic Conference championship in Houston, Texas on Feb. 27.

Townsend, a four-year diver for the Lumberjacks, placed fifth in 1-meter diving and eighth in 3-meter diving.

Townsend also placed 15th in the consolation round of the platform diving event.

The Lumberjacks women’s team recorded a winning score of 807.5, outpacing second-place New Mexico State, which finished with 448 points.

Rule No. 3: Don’t be “that guy” in your bracket pool. You know who you are.

You’re the guy who picks a No. 16 seed team to upset one of the four No. 1 seeds just to stand out. Trust me, the loss you’re sure to be handed is not worth the inner turmoil that will rage in your head when you don’t get to use the “See, I knew Austin Peay would upset Kansas!” speech you had stored in there all week. In fact, apply this rule to the No. 2 versus No. 15 matchups as well. Since 1985, the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds have gone a combined 241-7 against the No. 16 and No. 15 seeds, respectively, with the top-seeded team going a perfect 124-0. I’m aware this rule somewhat contradicts Rules No. 1 and No. 2, but stew on that previous stat for a minute before you do anything rash.

Rule No. 4: Raise the Stakes. Nothing ramps up your interest in a game between Baylor and Yale like having something on the line. Pride and money (if gambling were legal, of course) are good motivators.

Having extra side bets with your friends can make the 10-plus-hour viewing party that is the first round even better.

These rules aren’t guaranteed to help, but if they do, I will gladly take the credit.

If they don’t, my editor’s email inbox is eagerly awaiting your response.

In the end, a majority of us will be left wondering what could have been if we’d just picked so-and-so instead of so-and-so.

I’ll be happy with a bracket that turns out to be 60 percent correct. I would even frame my bracket and hang it over my desk if I could somehow pick the Elite Eight. Hey, a guy’s allowed to dream, right?

Local Mountain Bike Team Offers Unique Opportunity for Young Riders

T

he countless dirt trails that loop through the foothills of San Clemente serve as a haven for local mountain bike riders. For two young riders in particular, Matthew Woodward and Trevor Zanella, the trails also served as inspiration for a unique venture.

Woodward and Zanella, both freshmen at San Clemente High School, have ridden hundreds of miles on the trail systems of San Clemente over the past two years. On weekends, Woodward would go off and race as an individual in the SoCal High School Cycling League, a months-long mountain bike circuit that is governed by the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. The league features 67 high school and middle school teams stretching from Los Angeles to San Diego counties.

Woodward became captivated by the atmosphere and vibe he encountered on race day as hundreds of riders gathered for a full day of competition and, after telling Zanella about it, the two decided San Clemente needed to be represented.

Zanella and Woodward, along with

David Luciani, a San Clemente High School wrestling and track and field coach and arts teacher, soon formed the San Clemente Mountain Bike Team. The team has competed in two races on the SoCal League calendar and has grown to include nine team members.

Woodward made program history at the Vail Lake Challenge in Temecula on March 13 after placing third in the freshman race, becoming the first San Clemente rider to record a podium finish. “(The last few weeks) have been rad,” Woodward said. “It’s really cool to finally have your own team out with the other schools that have super well-established programs and you’re out there racing against them.”

Woodward, Zanella and teammate Jack Sykes have all finished in the top-10 of the freshman division in each of the last two races.

While they may go by the name San Clemente Mountain Bike Team and don the school’s colors on their uniform, the team is not affiliated with San Clemente High School and mountain bike racing is

not a sanctioned CIF-SS sport. The goal of the group is to eventually be recognized as a legitimate high school team, but Luciani said the small unit is currently focused on the fundamentals. The team’s members have mixed riding backgrounds, ranging from experienced to novice, and are learning to become better athletes and riders.

“It’s a lot about fitness, skills and getting kids on bikes and interested in the sport.

The racing is almost just an added bonus,” Luciani said.

The team also serves as an outlet for kids who may not be drawn to traditional

sports. While several members cross train with the wrestling and track and field teams, many have not competed athletically at the high school level until now.

“Kids come out of the woodwork. It’s a really good opportunity for guys who have been more or less lone wolves within (the biking) community,” Luciani said. “This is a great opportunity for them to compete for their school, for their team and for their community in these races.”

The team’s next race will be the Dam the Torpedoes meet at Castaic Lake on April 3. SC

Kobayashi, 17, emerged victorious at the WSL Vans Junior Pro in Cocoa Beach, Florida on March 13. The win, he said, was a product of hard work, good equipment, support, confidence and hospitality.

“It all came together for me in the final,” Kobayashi said. “It felt like everything was going my way. My surfboard was working.

My new Matt Biolos (Lost) board felt great all week. I stayed with the Colemans (the family of fellow surfer Tommy Coleman) and their hospitality was great. They really made me feel welcome. I’d really like to thank them for that. And I couldn’t have done it without my sponsors and my support crew back home.”

a good result and eventually make it to this year’s world championship.

“I really want to make it to the Pro Junior World Champs this year and I’ve been working really hard in the water and training at DSC Performance, to be ready for this,” he said. “And then I ended up sick at the beginning of last week and couldn’t surf much right before the event. But by Thursday I started to feel better and I’m stoked that my hard work paid off and carried me through. The last couple of years I didn’t even make it out of the first round, so making my first heat really gave me confidence and momentum.”

Kobayashi will turn 18 in November, making this his last year of Pro Junior eligibility.

“I’m really happy with my surfing right now,” he said. “I train every day when I’m home. There are eight events in the North American series, and I really want to be in top form and get a chance at World Juniors because it’s my last year on the junior tour.”

Kobayashi arrived home on Tuesday for a day off before jetting off to Hawaii for the Pipeline Pro Junior, the start of a twomonth stint away from home.

“Pipeline doesn’t count as a North American Pro Junior event but I want to go there for practice,” he said. “I can’t get points for this region but I can win prize money. But really I just want to get out there with three other guys and surf Pipe because it’s a great opportunity I don’t want to miss.” SC
