Five things San Clemente should know this week After 14 years, Courtney Smith’s dream may soon come to fruition. The San Clemente City Council approved a contract for the second phase of the Courtney’s SandCastle universal access playground Tuesday. Smith, a high school junior, told the board she hopes to see the playground completed by the time she leaves for college next year.

Courtney’s SandCastle Completion Approved THE LATEST: With an assist from the Marblehead residential property’s new owners and the Courtney’s SandCastle Foundation, the San Clemente City Council unanimously approved a contract to build the second phase of the universal access playground at Vista Hermosa Sports Park.

The council approved a $439,579 contract with Micon Construction of Placentia to construct a sensory garden, which will include areas to stimulate all five senses.

That amount, coupled with previous expenditures of more than $170,000 for design and items to be supplied by the city, still put the cost well above the $450,000 project budget.

The shortfall was covered by $113,000 from the city’s park acquisition and development fund and $50,000 from the Courtney’s SandCastle Foundation. Additional funds came from a $70,000 payment from the home building company and Marblehead residential owner Taylor Morrison, which will be made next month toward the construction of parks on that property.

Three previous attempts failed to get affordable bids.

City to Compile Refund List in Beach Parking Suit THE LATEST: The city of San Clemente must return more than $10 million dollars to residents collected from the Beach Parking Impact Fee fund, collected since 1989 from new development to provide new beach parking places, Orange County Superior Court Judge Thierry Colaw ruled Friday.

Colaw, who ruled against the city in January, formally signed the case’s order of judgment Friday. It is still to be determined if the plaintiffs in the case will be entitled to collect attorney’s fees as well.

A hearing on that motion will be held Friday, May 23.

The ruling requires San Clemente to return the funds as of Aug. 15, 2012, the date the suit was filed, in addition to

THE LATEST: The City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to approve a revised design for a more than 30-space parking lot on a cityowned piece of land on El Camino Real between Ichibari and Kaylani Coffee.

The proposal, which originally went before the council in April, was further examined by city staff after council members voiced concerns about cost and circulation.

Staff came back with two alternate proposals, both of which reduced the number of spaces. One would have utilized diagonal parking, which staff said would make it difficult to provide quality landscape aesthetics. A second proposal, which would have included a bus turnout, was deemed too expensive. Staff also noted that there were already two nearby bus stops.

The council ultimately voted for a scaled down version of the design with the removal of an electric vehicle charging station and substitution of asphalt for decorative pavers, among other changes, saving approximately $100,000, Councilwoman Lori Donchak said.

WHAT’S NEXT: Following the completion of the design phase, the project will go out to bid. The construction contract will be up for council approval. – JS

Council Debates Public Safety Cuts THE LATEST: With the rising costs of public safety contracts for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Orange County Fire Authority, San Clemente council members debated eliminating three positions in San Clemente Police Services at a budget workshop May 15.

The police services contract with the county increases 7 percent in the next fiscal year, largely due to pension changes.

Of the cuts discussed, the most contentious was that of a motorcycle officer.

Chief of Police Services Lt. David Moodie said he was concerned that losing the motor officer would lead to more traffic accidents. He said anecdotal evidence showed having more deputies on the road usually meant fewer accidents.

Mayor Tim Brown said the council was being asked to make a “sea change” in the way they thought about the budget because they are being asked to keep staffing high while costs are increasing.

Councilman Jim Evert voiced his support for the motorcycle officer, noting that the city could find the funds elsewhere in the budget. However, City Manager Pall Gudgeirsson noted many of those were one-time costs, while a motor officer was an ongoing one.

WHAT’S NEXT: The council approved a $2,300 decision item for two movies in the city parks as a summer activity but neither tabled or rejected other decision items, including $10,000 for a wellness officer at San Clemente High School, due to concerns about the costs growing in the future.

The council agreed to review potential increases in funding for the Downtown Business Association and design work for additions to the San Clemente Beach Trail at a future budget hearing. – JS

Beach Replenishment Project Bill Advances THE LATEST: The Water Resources Reform & Development Act of 2014, which includes funding for an initial beach replenishment project for San Clemente, has moved through the House of Representatives, after bipartisan conference committee recommended its passage.

The initial project, which would cost $11 million, with $7 million coming from the federal government, would add approximately 50 feet of beach from Linda Lane to the south end of T-Street Beach.

WHAT’S NEXT: Assistant City Engineer Tom Bonigut said Wednesday he believes the bill will go to the Senate in the next two weeks. The city has discussed, on a preliminary basis, ways to fund its $4 million obligation, as well as how to fund it on an ongoing basis if the project continues. – JS

City Hosting Pair of Memorial Day Ceremonies As it has for the last nine years, San Clemente will have two Memorial Day observances on Monday, May 26.

The 11 a.m. ceremony will take place on the Community Center lawn, 100 N. Calle Seville. Al Ehlow, a former U.S. Marine and San Clemente police chief, along with the city’s Recreation Division organizes this event each year. Ehlow is now the commandant of the local Marine Corps League.

The featured speaker this year is Brig.

Gen. John W. Bullard, commanding general of Marine Corps Installations West at Camp Pendleton. The program also features color guards dressed in authentic 1776 uniforms, bagpipers and a floral ceremony.

A second ceremony at Park Semper Fi, located on Alameda Lane, starts at 2 p.m.

The featured speaker is Col. Jason Bohm, commanding officer of 5th Marine Regiment, the most highly decorated regiment in the Marine Corps.

All active duty and retired military personnel are welcome. Music is provided by South County Sound and Buglers Across America.

Lessons Learned While Combat fire did not threaten San Clemente seriously, firefighters say precautions can be taken for future fires

W

hen black smoke billowed above San Clemente late Friday morning, many residents feared the dangerous fires raging throughout San Diego County and the southern section of Camp Pendleton had suddenly come much closer to home.

As it turned out, those fears, if not well founded, were at least not as dire as they might have been, thanks in part to the firefighters from the base, CalFire, OCFA and other agencies who fought the newly rechristened Combat fire.

The fire was reported at 11:24 a.m.

Friday. It was the third confirmed ongoing fire at the base at the time.

An evacuation order was issued for all personnel in the base’s 62 Area, or Camp San Mateo, home of the 5th Marine Corps Regiment. Also, the San Onofre Housing Area and School of Infantry West were ordered to evacuate. Both evacuation orders were lifted Saturday.

The American Red Cross had opened a shelter for Camp Pendleton evacuees at San Clemente High School Friday, which

by Saturday was closed and placed on standby.

The two other fires on base scorched more than 21,900 acres. The Tomahawk Fire, which started Wednesday morning near the Naval Weapons Station Fallbrook on the base’s eastern border burned an estimated 5,400 acres and is fully contained.

The Pulgas Fire, located east of Interstate 5 near the Las Pulgas Gate, spread to 15,000 acres and was 99 percent contained as of press time.

NAME CONFUSION LEADS TO WORRY In the first hours of the fire, the Marine Corps referred to the incident as the “Talega fire,” named for a canyon on the base. However, many residents of the San Clemente development that shares the name were worried, especially those who were away for work.

Andrea Ewell, a member of the Talega Homeowner’s Association board, said she was home at the time and received several calls from friends who were concerned after hearing reports about the fire via news reports. Her biggest concerns were due to the billowing black smoke in the initial portion of the blaze.

“It looked ominous,” Ewell said. “The

worst part was not knowing how close the actual flames were.”

Christina Carbonara, who serves on the board of the Talega Village Community Association said the development’s clubhouse was receiving calls for much of Friday from worried residents.

“It was definitely scary looking” Carbonara said in an email. “I was more concerned for Rancho San Clemente because you could see the flames from Steed Park and it looked closer to them, as well as residents who lived in south San Clemente.”

Some in the area were already housing friends from San Diego County who thought they’d had even worse luck, Carbonara said.

“We had friends in Talega housing

evacuees from the San Elijo fires,” Carbonara wrote. “They were out of their homes for three days which was a little nervewracking for them. When our fires started and they were still evacuated from their homes.”

Mayor Tim Brown was emceeing the city’s volunteer recognition lunch at the San Clemente Municipal Golf Course when he began getting texts from concerned residents who thought they might need to evacuate or come back for their pets. After leaving the luncheon, he drove up to a home at the top of a hill and asked if he could look out at the fire from the back porch. Soon after, he was joined by two other city officials. As he received updates from City Manager Pall Gudgeirsson and Fire Chief Kirk Wells, he broadcast

them via social media.

“We were hearing that it looked like the breaks were holding, and you could see the black smoke turn to white,” Brown said. “There was concern, but we were never really in danger.”

Brown said after hearing that, his concern focused more on the area’s base housing.

City Councilman Chris Hamm, an Orange County firefighter, said the Talega canyon actually burned fairly regularly during the summers but that there were a number of firebreaks between the canyon and residences or businesses that make any fire unlikely to reach the city from the south.

When Fire Captain Mitch Kahn finished his regular shift Friday, he immediately went up in one of the OCFA’s helicopters.

While not called upon to fight the fires with water, Kahn was able to observe the fire and the efforts of the base fire department. Kahn ended up working several more helicopter shifts as the fire fight continued.

Kahn said in contrast to the Tomahawk and Las Pulgas fires, which burned much larger areas for longer, the Combat fire was driven largely by heat and topography and not by wind. He said the fire was one of the largest he could remember within sight of San Clemente in the last decade.

“The wind was in our favor,” Kahn said.

“When it went into the canyon it started to run out of fuel and was unable to cross Cristianitos.”

Had the fire taken place in the fall, Kahn said, the story could have been much different. Santa Ana winds might well have driven the fire toward Cristianitos and provided more fuel. Fall is also a drier time, he said.

The firebreaks Hamm mentioned, as well as building standards from the last decade focusing more on fire mitigation, make newer developments like Talega less vulnerable. But areas of south San Clemente could be in danger if a similar fire happened with less favorable winds, Kahn said. Other vulnerable areas in San Clemente proper would be coastal canyons.

“It doesn’t have to be a big fire, in terms of acreage, to cause a lot of damage,” Kahn said.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN Kahn said homeowners in San Clemente can learn lessons from the fires in San Diego. Firefighters he’d spoken with there said a number of the homes that were destroyed were lost due in part to “ladder fuels,” trees and other landscaping that provided a source of fuel near homes.

Homeowners, Kahn said, should consider different plantings that might provide a natural firebreak.

He also encouraged residents to develop their own evacuation plans.

“Just have an idea for what you want to take,” Kahn said.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO Stephanie Frisch, the chair of the Chamber of Commerce’s executive board, has announced she will be running for San Juan Capistrano City Council in the November election. Frisch, an insurance agent and owner of Insurance 101, is the fourth candidate to publicly declare and the second non-incumbent. In April, longtime Cultural Heritage Commissioner and community volunteer Jan Siegel announced her candidacy, along with incumbents Larry Kramer and John Taylor. DANA POINT Despite concerns from boaters, the Dana Point Planning Commission approved Orange County’s application last week to demolish and rebuild much of the Dana Point Harbor’s aging structures. Commissioners approved the coastal development permit in a 4-1 vote, moving the $140 million project closer to breaking ground. “This revitalization might not have everything that everyone wants … but … It’s been vetted,” said Commissioner April O’Connor. Commissioner Norm Denton cast the dissenting vote. Speakers highlighted the revitalization need, but some raised issue with the impacts a potential storage structure, dubbed the “boat barn,” could have on boaters. The “barn” must still be approved by the California Coastal Commission. The project will add retail and commercial space along with a 35,000-square-foot park and a two-level structure that will add more than 500 parking spaces. OC Dana Point Harbor Director Brad Gross said commercial construction could begin in 2015.

New facility brings new opportunities

ecently I wrote a View on health and fitness and where spiritual and physical fitness merged as the threshold for an active and productive life.

I developed a phrase “Get UGO,” which means “Get Up, Get Going, Get Out.” This is a rule for all of us to live by in our everyday lives.

In addition, I talked about the many fitness facilities, gymnasiums and studios we are fortunate to have in San Clemente, many of which are specialized, relatively small and serve a specific and valuable purpose. Two fitness venues I did not discuss are the beaches for surfing, which serve a large active part of our population, and the many trails, used daily by many and contribute to a very high level of fitness for hikers.

I also mentioned that San Clemente was about to experience the opening of still another fitness facility in the near future.

And, in fact, that new facility, 24 Hour Fitness, opened three weeks ago and has enjoyed unprecedented success in its first three weeks.

For the past 12 years, I have driven some 10 miles each way to San Juan Capistrano, six days a week, to a fairly large versatile facility for my workouts.

This new facility in San Clemente is within a mile of my home and will save me an excess of 100 miles a week driving time and fuel. On the opening day every other person I saw was a San Clemente resident

who had also driven often to San Juan. In addition, and much to my surprise, I ran into many San Juan and Dana Point residents who are now coming to the new San Clemente facility.

LEW’S VIEWS The new facility is very

By Lew Avera large and, of course, modern in every respect. Just some examples: there are 100 cardio machines (treadmills, elliptical machines, stair climbers), plus an additional 50 specialized bikes in the spinning room, for a total of 150 cardio machines. There is a full basketball court for play anytime, a three-lane swimming pool, a room for group classes, both a separate steam and hot room for men and women, and all of the latest and new specialized exercise equipment. While not contributing directly to “exercise,” for those who need to have a diversion during their workouts, there are 18 very large flat screen television sets strategically placed, primarily for those on cardio machines. Most midmornings when I am there, I count over 200 people working out in the facility at any given point in time.

It’s not enough to just describe this new facility and be done. When I began to answer the “so what?” question, several conclusions came to mind. First, I believe this is the finest fitness facility in southern Orange County, and probably in all of Or-

ange County. I know there is a new facility in Laguna Niguel near the 73 Toll Road, however, I cannot believe it exceeds ours.

Second, we have a well-defined population which I described several months ago.

This facility serves that population and our citizens are taking to this facility like the proverbial “ducks to water.” I see it with the hundreds of new faces in just several days and the many friends over the years whom I believe are using a fitness facility for the first time.

Finally, and perhaps most important, all of this leads me to believe that San Clemente has the fittest and healthiest population in all of Orange County. I think this is a wonderful compliment to all of us who live here, and even though we have some diverse population segments, we share much in common. This, of course, includes not just those who work out at a fitness center, but all of those who “Get UGO” on their own, in the surf and on the trails as well.

At the Movies: ‘Million Dollar Arm’ is a Hamm-y Attempt

ports-themed films often feature a protagonist coming to the realization that they need to get over their ego.

Most of the time it’s the athlete themselves. Sometimes it’s the coach.

In Jerry Maguire (1996), it’s the once successful sports agent, who needs one client to turn it all around. In Disney’s latest live-action flick, Million Dollar Arm, Jon Hamm plays a Maguire-like agent who needs to do the same.

(Hamm) is down on his luck. It’s 2008 and all his big-time clients are retired. When the next rising football star passes him up for another agency, J.B. gets a burst of inspiration while watching cricket.

Molina Honored as Volunteer of the Year Cinco de Mayo chairman passing on family legacy

E

d Molina is passing on an already strong legacy of volunteerism to the next generation.

Molina, who was honored Friday as San Clemente’s Volunteer of the Year, took over as chairman of the city’s Cinco de Mayo Fiesta committee in 2005. His father, Ed Molina Sr., had been on the original board that created the event, which will be celebrating its 25th year in 2015.

His son will join the committee this year to carry on the tradition.

Molina also volunteers with the Gang Reduction Intervention Program, as a club soccer coach among other organizations.

“The reason I’m involved is the community I’m a part

of,” Molina said. “It’s people that you want to be with, people who are dedicated and who get the job done. I’m very blessed to be in a community that I love.”

Molina said he intends to stay involved in the Cinco de Mayo event for as long as he can. He said he did not expect to win the award.

“I didn’t even know my name was up for it,” Molina said. “I just knew there was a luncheon for volunteer appreciation. I didn’t know until someone pointed it out on the program.”

Molina said he intends on having the best event possible next year, including the potential for an expanded games area and local entertainment.

“That’s what we strive for every year, and to make sure the community has a lot of fun,” Molina said. “It’s kind of the kick-off for all the events in San Clemente (in the spring and summer months).”

Other volunteers honored included Jennifer Greener, president of the Pet Project Foundation, San Clemente Friends of the Library volunteer Cass Jones and Jill Martin of Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Special certificates of recognition were given to Pam Hill, Steve Kell and Alan Nowell of the San Clemente Art Association, for their assistance with the San Clemente Street Art program, and Suzanne Ansari and Allen Khorouszan, for restarting the Neighborhood Watch program in the Richmond Pointe area of Rancho San Clemente. Older singles grapple with the marriage versus living together debate

T

he 2000 census revealed that approximately 1.2 million people age 50 and older lived together without being married. In the 2010 census that number increased to 2.8 million.

Many older couples I meet tell me they don’t plan on getting married. Leading to the question, is tying the knot a thing of the past for older couples?

For many, yes. But not for all. On May 10, Dana Point residents Manny Jurado, 73, and his girlfriend, Rebecca Fischer, 55, boarded the historic tall ship, Spirit of Dana Point, and headed out to sea to get married. Fifty-one guests and friends joined them.

Manny, a volunteer with Dana Point Police Services, explained: “As a part of my police volunteer training, I had to spend time last fall at the Coroner’s office, better known as the morgue. I found out that authorities, in checking for a next of kin when someone dies, do not consider contacting a girlfriend or boyfriend—they aren’t even on the list. Authorities will track down a distant relative as far away as New York City, for example, but won’t consider notifying a domestic partner.”

Manny continued, “Rebecca is the most important person in my life. When I heard that she doesn’t count in the person being notified if I pass away, I felt terrible.”

was getting Rebecca for Christmas. He hadn’t decided.

His birthday is on December 20 and Rebecca’s is on December 26 so it’s kind of a gift-giving dilemma with Christmas tossed right in between those dates.

His daughter said, “I know something she wants.”

“What,” Manny asked.

“An engagement ring,” his daughter replied.

At midnight, on the cusp between December 25 and December 26, just seconds before her birthday, Manny proposed to Rebecca and presented the ring.

Manny met Rebecca eight years ago when she came into his bicycle shop in Hacienda Heights to buy her grandson a bike. Their first date was April 26, 2006.

Rebecca said, “Getting married will not change our Page 12

emotional attachment to each other. It will just make some legal things easier.”

Manny and Rebecca said that getting married on the tall ship was a unique and enjoyable experience. They said the crew could not have been nicer and more accommodating. The wedding reception was scheduled at the deli for 6 p.m. But, the seas got rough and a few guests were feeling queasy. So, after the ceremony, Manny and Rebecca decided to have the ship return to port sooner than planned.

When Manny called the deli at 4:15 p.m. to say they had returned to the Ocean Institute and asked if it would it be OK if guests came to the deli an hour and 20 minutes early, I about died. We had barely begun setting up for the reception. But Rosa and Teresa, my employees of 26 years, got appetizers put together in a hurry and the beer and wine was ready to go. Somehow, we made it all happen.

One can’t help but wonder if the Manny-Rebecca story will inspire other older singles who have lived together for years but haven’t married to rethink their status. Stepping Out Stair Climbing with a View Photo: Andrea Swayne

Always take the stairs. This is an oft repeated bit of advice when discussing ways to incorporate bits of exercise into everyday life.

Most people hear this and think of it in terms such as: when faced with a choice between and elevator, escalator or stairs; take the stairs.

It makes sense. The human body’s main mode of locomotion is walking. Our bodies are built to do it with ease. Unless an incline, weights, long distance or speed is applied, simply walking—although an excellent way to stay fit—is not considered a “vigorous” form of physical activity. But, add stairs into the picture and it’s a whole new story.

According to an online Harvard Medical School health report, a Canadian research study found that between walking, lifting weights and climbing stairs, stair climbing was the most physically demanding. It is 50 percent more demanding than lifting weights or walking a steep incline and twice as strenuous as walking on a level surface.

The publication also cited a Harvard alumni study that showed, even at a slow pace, climbing stairs burns calories “two to three times faster than walking on the level.”

The study also showed the mortality rate of men who walk an average of eight flights of stairs per day is 33 percent lower than those who are sedentary. For those who walked 1.3 miles per day, the death rate was 22 percent

lower than the sedentary subjects.

Stair climbing machines have become a popular alternative for those who do not live or work in cities and are not faced with daily opportunities to forego a ride in the lift for an echoing stairwell.

Although both options get the job done, so to speak, neither are very fun or inspiring.

With so much natural beauty right in our own back yard, why not try “stepping up” your workout—outdoors in beautiful Dana Point.

The city offers four beautiful stairways, where the rewards for reaching the summits include breathtaking views of the Pacific, the Headlands and Dana Point Harbor.

Mix and match. Climb only to the first landing at first. Work your way up as your fitness level improves. Wherever you choose to take the stairs, the rewards to your wellbeing will benefit both mind and body.

Here is a short tour of four of the best places to climb while taking in awe inspiring views of Dana Point.

HERITAGE PARK The stairway at Heritage Park has 91 steps with a landing halfway up and two flat slightly inclined paths leading in either direction, should you feel like you’re done at that point. In fact, these paths stretch all the way to the top so you can elect to do stairs one way and paths the other.

Once at the top of the first staircase there is a series of three shorter 22- to 28-step

stairways each with a landing showcasing a higher and more picturesque vantage point of the Harbor than the one before.

The fifth and final set of steps, only 11 of them, lands you at the park’s highest Harbor overlook, a landing that has a compass rose built into the pavement so you can get your directional bearing while enjoying the beautiful view below.

If you prefer, you can start from the top, at El Camino Capistrano and Old Golden Lantern where park parking lot is located. But climbing first offers extra motivation, as each new view is like a prize for making it up each level.

The stairway begins across the street from the Harbor at Dana Point Harbor Drive and Golden Lantern, about a half a block west, just past Dana Marina Plaza.

LANTERN BAY PARK Also at Dana Point Harbor Drive and Golden Lantern, just across the street from the Harbor, one of the city’s most popular workout stairways leads up toward Lantern Bay Park and the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort and Spa. This climb is 118 steps to the top, with a landing about halfway up.

A paved path winds up and down here too, providing an alternative way to ascend or descend the incline.

Should you choose to start from the top; the park parking lot is accessed off of Dana Point Harbor Drive and Park Lantern, just before reaching the hotel.

STRAND VISTA PARK The main stairway at Strand Vista Park has 164 stairs with numerous landings and benches along the way. And from the very first step to the last, the view of the ocean, beach and headlands is breathtaking.

There are actually four alternate routes from Strand Vista Park down to the beach— two through the Strand at Headlands neighborhood, one zig-zagging trail known as the Switchback Trail and a funicular inclined elevator.

Flat, paved walking paths, at both the top and bottom, link the access ways, so walkers can make a loop.

The funicular provides a relaxing rest, should you need to take a breather on your way up or down.

HILLTOP PARK At the top of Cove Road, just across the street from the Chart House Restaurant on Green Lantern, is a 99-step stairway leading up to Hilltop Park.

These stairs are a trailhead, part of the system of nature trails atop the Headlands, surrounding the Dana Point Nature Interpretive Center and Dana Point Preserve.

The trail at the top is a hard-packed dirt path, as are all of the Headlands trails and the view of the Harbor below is spectacular.

However you elect to add stair climbing to your exercise routine, you can’t go wrong, stepping out in Dana Point. —Andrea Swayne

Since the highest concentration of emotional and sensory receptors are found in the spine, in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, we can modify how we react to a situation by creating physical changes in the spine.

Your spine is also a modulator of your sense of self. Who you think you are is in part based on the shape, tone and position of your spine. We often say “out of sight, out of mind” and where it applies is your spine. If your shoulders are slumped over and your head hangs low you won’t get hired as a confidence coach. Look at how your posture and outlook on life is similar to that of your parents and family. The longer this stays in place the more it will determine who you say you are and how you experience life.

Casa Wellness Wednesdays focus on the important health aspects that we should not take for granted.

By Brian Park When it comes to choosing a gym, one size does not fit all. While some people prefer the intimacy (and privacy) of smaller community gyms, others need access to a greater selection of equipment, amenities and trainers that is typical of larger gyms.

Others have more practical criteria: location (“Can I get a quick workout in during my lunch break?”) and price.

Fortunately, in south Orange County, there are several types of gyms that cater to all needs. Checklist: 15 Steps Toward a Healthier You

You’ve made a decision to embark on a journey toward better health but where to begin?

Get into the habit of reading nutrition labels at the grocery store. Not all foods are created equal. Make a conscious decision to shop for natural foods and increase the variety of foods you consume. Most individuals have food habits that keep them in a rut.

Deviate from your regular diet and experience a new world of fruits, vegetables, herbs and lean protein.

You are probably thinking about how you can become healthier, be more pain free and move better than you do right now. The road to health can seem daunting. A simple systematic approach, such as a “to-do” list, may be just what you need to help you move forward with your goals.

Here is a checklist of 15 things to do to help you get started: A gradual, personalized exercise program that takes into account your anatomy and physiology is important. A physical therapist or other qualified medical professional can conduct an evaluation and assist with this.

Make yourself accountable to someone other than yourself. Log your exercises—either at home or at the gym—in a journal and inform your physical therapist or other medical professional about your progress.

Self-confidence is critical. Believe in yourself and your ability to become stronger, healthier and more functional. If you think you can, then you can.

increased energy, as if you already achieved your goals. Positive expectations of health, vitality and energy are helpful to improve your health and well-being.

Never skip meals, especially breakfast.

It is the most important meal of the day, so start your day right with a healthy breakfast.

It will get your metabolism going and keep your appetite and blood sugar in check as the day progresses.

Find an exercise partner to help you stay consistent with your exercise regimen.

Drink plenty of water. Hydration is important for your blood, kidneys and joints.

Consistency is key. Exercise at least three to four times a week.

Always seek qualified help. Expert supervision provided by a physical therapist or other medical professional is important, especially if you are recovering from injuries or medical conditions.

Challenge yourself each week. Gradual progression is the only way to improve. Stay within the limits of pain. When in doubt, ask your physical therapist.

Be aware of what you eat. Fat has twice the caloric density of carbohydrates and protein. So limit your fat intake and consume

down to reduce the risk of injury.

Many people think of physical therapy only after receiving orders from their doctor, following an injury. There are a few other smart reasons for consulting a physical therapist as you begin your quest for health.

If you are preparing to have surgery, getting some physical therapy ahead of time can make rehab a whole lot easier after your operation. In terms of developing exercise/ fitness programs, physical therapy can be a great place to start, especially if you have an old injury or surgery that you need to be mindful of. Physical therapists are also a valuable resource when it comes to picking a surgeon, personal trainer, yoga instructor or Pilates instructor.

Thirteen San Clemente girls feted for their service work

he 2014 Rose Medallion Ball for the Assisteens League of San Juan Capistrano is to be held at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott in Dana Point, Sunday, May 25. This year there will be 13 senior girls presented—12 graduates from San Clemente High and one from JSerra Catholic High School. All are San Clemente residents.

JORDYN ALEXANDRA ASAKOWICZ Jordyn Alexandra Asakowicz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Asakowicz of San Clemente, has been a member of the Assisteens Auxiliary for the past five years.

Jordyn has enjoyed volunteering at the Assistance League’s thrift store, the Bargain Box, as well as with Family Assistance Ministries, and at many fun San Clemente events. Jordyn has also been a member of San Clemente High School Alternative Spring Break and has had a great time as activities commissioner. Jordyn will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall.

TAYLOR MARIE BRUBAKER Taylor Marie Brubaker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Brubaker of San Clemente, has been a member of the Assisteen’s Auxiliary for the past five years.

Taylor has enjoyed volunteering with her mother at Bargain Box and participating in the Operation School Bell philanthropy. She currently serves as co-chairman. Taylor played volleyball all four years at SCHS and led her team to the CIF playoffs as team captain this year. Taylor was also an active member of the Be a Hero Become a Donor club on campus. Taylor is looking forward to playing volleyball at Fresno State University in the fall.

KENDRA LYN BURNS Kendra Lyn Burns, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Burns of San Clemente, has been a member of Assisteens for the past four years. Kendra has enjoyed volunteering at the Bargain Box and her favorite event was making gingerbread houses for the FAM Christmas event and handing out presents to the children that attended. In the fall, Kendra plans on studying business at Boise State University.

KAYLA LYNN CHRISS Kayla Lynn Chriss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Chriss of San Clemente, has been a member of the Assisteens Auxiliary for the past five years. Kayla has held the position of Historian this year and has enjoyed volunteering for Operation School Bell and the Holiday Home Tours.

Kayla has been on the track and cross country teams for all four years at SCHS. In the fall, Kayla will attend a fouryear university.

OLIVIA MAE MERLINO Olivia Mae Merlino, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Merlino of San Clemente, has been a member of the Assisteens for the past five years. She currently holds the position of second vice chairman-hours and attendance.

Olivia’s favorite philanthropies include visiting and having tea with the senior citizens at their retirement homes. She is varsity lacrosse team captain at SCHS and will be attending the University of Oregon in the fall.

ANNE MARIE PFOST Anne Marie Pfost, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William L. Pfost III of San Clemente, has been a member of Assisteens for the past five years and has held the positions of social chairman, first vice chairman, inspiration chair and chair of programs and selfimprovement. Catholic High School where she is captain of the varsity cheer squad, president of the Real Beauty club and is an active member of music ministry and theatre productions.

Next year, she will be attending Belmont University in Nashville to study commercial music with a principle in voice.

DANIELLE NICOLE PRUITT Danielle Nicole Pruitt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Pruitt of San Clemente, has been a member of Assisteens Auxiliary for the past five years. Danielle has enjoyed volunteering with delivering Thanksgiving baskets and decorating walkers at the Senior Center. She attends SCHS where she has ran cross country and track for the past four years and has enjoyed being a member of Nordstrom’s Fashion Board. Danielle will be attending Washington State University in the fall.

Melissa attends San Clemente High School, where she has been a four year varsity member of both the cross country and track teams. Melissa has the distinction of being awarded MVP each of her four years on the Triton cross country team, as well as being named to Orange County’s All-County cross country team four years in a row. After graduation, Melissa will be attending California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo where she will study kinesiology.

SARAH DILLON

Morgan is the daughter of Bryan and Karen Berman. For Morgan, participating in NCL has fostered a true passion for service. She has learned that she loves helping people and she has experienced the joy of making others happy. She has especially enjoyed working at Operation Valentine.

In June, Morgan will graduate from San Clemente High School, where she played three years on the varsity tennis team.

Her senior year, she was the number one varsity doubles player. This fall, Morgan will be a pre-law student at the University of Arizona, and minor in American Sign Language, which she plans to use as an interpreter for deaf children.

Melissa is the daughter of Mark and Kathy Eisele. Over the last six years, Melissa has enjoyed volunteering for many NCL philanthropies, but her favorite

Sarah is the daughter of Betsey Dillon and the late Patrick Dillon. The most significant thing that Sarah has learned from NCL is that a small contribution can make a substantial improvement in another’s life. She has been inspired most by her volunteer work with Family Assistance Ministries and Working Wardrobes. This work has deepened her compassion and empathy for children and teens enduring hardships with their families.

Sarah attends Santa Margarita Catholic High School, where she is a scholar athlete for both golf and track and field. Having spent all four years on the academic honor roll, she is also a lifetime member of the California Scholarship Federation.

Next year, Sarah will be attending the University of South Carolina to study journalism with minors in art history and fashion merchandising. She looks forward to a career in the fashion industry.

Caroline is the daughter of Scott and Cindy Ryan. Caroline has enjoyed volunteering for many NCL philanthropies, but her favorite is Casa Romantica in San Clemente. Since her freshman year, she has focused most of her volunteer hours at the Casa, whether it’s reading to children during story time, working in the gift shop alongside her mother or giving tours of the landmark.

Caroline attends San Clemente High School. She played volleyball for the Tritons for three years, is a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She will graduate as valedictorian. After graduation Caroline will attend Texas Christian University, where she will major in nursing and ultimately become a nurse practitioner.

Brianna is the daughter of John and Tia Porrello. Laura’s House has been Brianna’s favorite place to volunteer during her years in the National Charity League.

She believes it is very important to raise awareness, as well as help women and children who are living in harsh environments and situations.

At JSerra Catholic High School, Brianna is a very active student. She has been a member of the choir, where she has served as a leader and an officer and spent three years on both ASB and the cheer and song team. She is also involved in the Music Ministry and Theater clubs, among others. In the fall, Brianna will attend the University of Mississippi, where she will pursue a degree in integrated marketing communications. SC

Newest Hall of Fame Inductees are Unique Record-holding receiver and SCHS’s lone NBA player enter City Hall

S

an Clemente’s newest Hall of Fame athletes have made their mark on both the record books and the professional ranks. But both men said Saturday that their induction meant most to them because of the honor they received from the city they love.

Dean Garrett, the lone San Clemente High School graduate to play in the NBA, and Trevor Insley, who holds multiple Division I football receiving records, were inducted into the city’s Sports Hall of Fame Saturday. Their names will join nine others from last year’s inaugural class on the walls of the San Clemente Aquatic Center.

Garrett, who was also a member of the 1987 national champion Indiana Hoosiers, played six years in the NBA after playing for a number of years in Greece and Italy.

He was a former All-Conference player for the Tritons, and his No. 22 jersey remains the only retired number for the boys basketball program. Garrett said he had no idea he was under consideration when he received word of his induction.

“I saw my phone ring and I saw the 949,” Garrett said. “I thought ‘Who is calling me from Orange County?’ I put my phone aside then I heard the message. I sat there and said, ‘Are you serious? Are they really doing this for me?’ I couldn’t believe it.”

Garrett said he came to basketball relatively late compared to most elite athletes.

“I didn’t play basketball until I got into high school,” he said. “Coach Skelton saw me walking around at about 6 feet tall and asked if I played basketball. I told him baseball had always been my first love, and it always will be. He told me, ‘I’ll see you at the gym later on.’ I came to the gym and started playing. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d go further than that.”

before transferring to Indiana, where he played for the legendary and infamous Bobby Knight.

“My junior college coach, because he could be, was a little bit more verbal than coach Knight was, if you can believe that,” Garrett said. “I was kind of already ready for it. Coach Knight and I, we’ve gotten along forever.”

and family keep it alive for him. He has also been very proud to say he came from San Clemente, though he now lives in Las Vegas. His father, a U.S. Marine, was stationed at Camp Pendleton during Garrett’s high school career.

“When I got to Indiana, I remember one day they asked me where do you want us to say where you’re from. They always put your high school,” Garrett told the crowd.

“Because I went to junior college they asked if I wanted to be introduced from San Francisco. I was like ‘No, absolutely not. I’m from San Clemente.’ That was one of the best things I’ve done with my life.”

Insley still holds NCAA records for career receiving yards (5,005), in a season (2,006), yardage per game for a season (187.3) and most 100-yard receiving games in a career (26). He played all four seasons at the University of Nevada-Reno, before signing with the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent in 2000.

“It’s truly an honor to be up here,” Insley said. “Looking at some of these names, some of them are my peers, others are people I looked up to as a kid growing up in San Clemente. I was born and raised here and I think, as a kid, when you live in a town like this, you don’t truly appreciate it until later on.”

“San Clemente was, by far, one of my most enjoyable football experiences,” Insley said. “Coach (Mark) McElroy took over the program when I was a freshman, and that gave a new fresh start to the whole program. He was a guy who liked to throw the ball, and as a receiver, I was excited about that. He had a real positive influence as a coach for me before I went on to college.”

Insley was All-County and team MVP as a receiver. He was also named All-Section and All-Regional. His senior season, the Tritons beat a Mater Dei squad whose seniors had not lost a game.

In the NFL, Insley caught passes from Peyton Manning for his first two seasons, before moving on to the then-expansion Houston Texans before suffering a careerending ankle injury. He also played for the Barcelona Dragons of NFL Europe. He is now a firefighter for the Los Angeles Fire Department and lives in San Clemente with his wife and two children.

“I went away to the University of Nevada for four years and then ended up living in Indianapolis and Houston and spent some time in Barcelona, Spain, and I can say without a doubt, San Clemente truly is the best city in the world,” Insley told the crowd.

“There’s a sense of community in San Clemente that all of us experience living here,” he said. “I’ve never seen it anywhere else. My kids, currently go to Concordia Elementary school, where I went. Tritons Baseball Advances to First Round The San Clemente baseball team advanced through the wild card round of the CIF-SS Division 2 Championships on May 20 with a 2-1 win over Woodbridge. The Tritons were set to face Chino Hills May 21 on the road in the first round. Results were not available at press time.

Tritons senior pitcher John Sheaks stunned the Warrior batters through six innings, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out nine.

The Tritons offense started strong at the plate but ran into outs on the base paths in the first inning. Connor Sealey walked and stole second base but was thrown out on a close play at the plate on a single by Kent Burckle. One batter later, Burckle was tagged out trying to advance to third on a groundball to the shortstop.

Woodbridge starter Kai Abe helped his own cause and gave the Warriors a 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning with a RBI double.

The Warriors carried their lead to the top of the fi fth inning until Dylan Riddle hit a RBI ground ball that made it 1-1.

With the game still tied in the top of the seventh, Riddle worked a walk and advanced to third base. Burckle followed with a single, allowing Riddle to score.

“We haven’t played really well in the last three games, including this one. I thought we played better defensively today, but we need to start swinging the bats if we are going to go deep into the playoffs,” San Clemente head coach Dave Gellatly said.

Boys Tennis Falls to Westlake The San Clemente boys tennis team’s CIF-SS Division 1 Championship run ended in the second round on May 16, following a 12-6 loss to Westlake, the No. 1 team from the Marmonte League.

The Tritons advanced to the second round after defeating Mater Dei, 14-4, in the first round.

San Clemente was forced to play sophomore Jay Yeam, who normally plays in the team’s top-3 singles rotation, in doubles.

It was a move of necessity, according to head coach John Stephens, but it paid off as Yeam paired up with Kyle Darby, and San Clemente Times May 22-28, 2014

Michael Bott was the only singles player who earned a point for the Tritons.

The doubles team of Billy Whitaker and Matt Greenberg swept their three matches. Greenberg and Whitaker will compete in the CIF-SS Individual doubles tournament. Bott will play in the singles format.

Softball Falls in First Round to Wolverines In their return to the CIF-SS Division 2 Championships, the San Clemente softball team won a wild card game but lost in the first round to Aliso Niguel, 3-1, on May 20.

The Tritons (13-8, 3-5 league) pulled off a convincing 8-2 win over La Mirada on May 19 in the wild card round. The Tritons bats were hot in that game, scoring eight runs on nine hits.

In the first-round matchup against the Wolverines, the bats suddenly cooled off.

San Clemente was held in check by Aliso Niguel starting pitcher Ashley Ruiz, who threw a complete game one-hitter.

The teams were tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the third when Aliso Niguel plated two runs, which would ultimately decide the game. Tritons junior Lauren Kane had the only hit.

The loss capped off a turnaround season for the Tritons. The team won only five games in 2013 but came away with a winning record under the guidance of first-year head coach Bill Malcolm.

Tritons Golf Finishes 11th in Team Divisional Rounds of 73 (+1) and 77 (+5) from Sammy Schwartz and Shane Barreira, respectively, were not enough to push the Tritons boys golf team into the next round of team competition on May 19 at Talega Golf Course in San Clemente.

The Tritons shot a collective 406 at the CIF South Coast Team Divisional Championship, finishing in 11th place in the 19-team event.

The Tritons posted solid scores from all six team members, which include rounds of 84 (+12) from Reese Wahlin, two rounds of 86 (+14) from Ryan Moore and Sean Rawlings and an 88 (+16) from Austin Briggs.

Tritons Track and Field Athletes Advance to CIF Finals Several San Clemente track and field athletes competed at the CIF-SS Division Prelims at Trabuco Hills High School on May 17. Following some standout performances, those athletes have qualified to compete in the CIF-SS Finals on May 24 at Cerritos College.

vance. Chronister, who recorded a throw of 125-04, is only the second thrower from the girls program to advance to the finals since 1981.

Senior distance runner Melissa Eisele finished seventh and second in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs, respectively. Eisele qualified for the finals in both events but will only compete in the 3,200 on May 24, according to head coach Dave Proodian.

Kelsey Benoit and Rocky Fenton both qualified in the shot put and discus throws. In the shot put, Benoit unleashed a second-place throw of 61-08. Fenton finished seventh.

Fenton posted the top throw in the discus at the qualifying event with a throw of 173-09. Benoit placed fourth (171-05).

Arik Nesbit finished second in the triple jump, posting a 47-04.5 leap and fi fth in the long jump (22-05.25)

Volleyball Playoff Run Ends in Second Round Despite a first-place finish in the South Coast League, the San Clemente boys volleyball team found themselves on the road in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 1 Championships on May 15. The Tritons traveled to play Orange Lutheran, the third-place team out of the Trinity League, and lost 21-25, 25-21, 18-25, 22-25.

The Tritons earned a convincing threeset win over Northwood in the first round of the playoffs. When they took the court against the Lancers two days later, they had a multitude of unforced errors, according to head coach Ken Goldstone.

“I think our guys played hard, but we made some ball control mistakes. We had

some hitting and passing errors,” Goldstone said. “You don’t want to have those errors at this time of year.”

The loss caps off a season that saw the Tritons finish second in the Redondo Union Championships, third in the OC Championships and ninth in the gold division at the Best of the West Tournament.

San Clemente also won the South Coast League title.

Shaun Stephens was named the South Coast League MVP following the end of the regular season. Nick Goldstone and Peter Van Liefde were named to the all-league first team. Brandon Hopper and Matt August were named to the second team.

Tritons Earn All-County and US Lacrosse Postseason Honors The 2014 All-County and US Lacrosse Postseason awards were announced May 16.

Senior midfield Peyton Garrett was named a US Lacrosse All-American and named to the All-County first team.

Garrett will play at Division 1 High Point University next fall.

Seniors Stone Sims (defense) and Austin Streeter were named to the All-County second team. Sims is committed to play for the University of Albany in New York and Streeter will play for Bellarmine University in Kentucky, both Division 1 programs.

Sophomore defense Caleb Bozarth and junior attack Jack Renard were named to the All-County third team.

fter spending the last four summers in San Clemente, Sebastian Mendes, 12, and his family have decided make the city their new home.

Sebastian is more focused than ever on his quest for a future career in professional surfing, and moving to San Clemente is a big part of the plan.

Relocating from Agoura Hills and enrolling in the hybrid—part in-class, part independent study—Capistrano Virtual School through Shorecliffs Middle School is a step he and his parents believe will keep him focused on his goals, both academically and in the lineup.

“The best things about moving to San Clemente are perfect waves, friends, super fun skate parks and this school I’m about to go to is really cool,” he said. “A lot of my friends go there. It’s a hybrid program and

that’s perfect for me.”

Sebastian credits his surfing success to training at DSC and with coaches Ryan Simmons and Mike Lamm, as well as the support of his family and sponsors— O’Neill, Wave Riding Vehicles, Oakley, Freestyle and Famous.

Fresh off his big Western Surfing Association West Coast Championship U14 shortboard win May 11, it is apparent Sebastian’s recent efforts to improve his strength and power are working.

“The competition was pretty intense. Everyone was ripping and it was a lot of hard work. I had to go through a lot of tough heats to get there and I am really proud of my result,” Sebastian said. “Winning felt amazing … like I moved a step further in my surfing.”

SURF FORECAST Water Temperature: 61-64 degrees F Water Visibility and Conditions: 10-18’+ fair Immediate: Fun-zone blend of easing south/ southwest swell and some small northwest windswell prevails. Better exposed breaks run thighwaist- and chest high (3-4’), while top spots go larger on sets getting up to shoulder high+ (4’+) at times. Winds are light/variable to locally light onshore early, becoming light to moderate southwesterly during the afternoon.

Longer Range Outlook: More southwest to south/ southwest swell is due in Friday, peaking over the weekend. Northwest windswell energy is minimal initially, then picks up over the weekend. Surf is in the 2-4’ zone Friday, bumping up into the 3-4’+ zone over the weekend. Best combo magnets go larger on sets. Possible southerly winds in the mornings for the weekend.
