SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO The San Juan City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday, May 30 to do away with redlight cameras at two city intersections. Due to an estimated loss of about $39,000 for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, the city will not renew its $232,800 annual contract with American Traffic Solutions to operate four red-light cameras at two intersections along Del Obispo Street, at Ortega Highway and Camino Capistrano. Since the Red Light Photo Enforcement Program began in 2000, collisions have declined at the Ortega Highway and Camino Capistrano intersections by 44.4 percent and 80.7 percent, respectively. However, citations and resulting revenue have also decreased. Red-light citations will cease after September 29, but the city agreed to extend its agreement until December to process tickets already in the system.

DANA POINT The City of Dana Point Planning Commission announced it will hold a public hearing at its next meeting to consider an application by the County of Orange and OC Dana Point Harbor for a coastal development permit that would allow the construction of new directional signs at the Harbor. The request asks the city to approve the replacement of 15 signs in parkways and medians along Dana Point Harbor Drive, Island Way and Dana Drive. The proposed sign project is the next step in the nearly 15-year long quest toward the approximately $140 million Dana Point Harbor Revitalization Plan. The meeting will be June 11 at City Hall Council Chambers, 33282 Golden Lantern at 6 p.m. Anyone wishing to speak in favor or against this matter is invited to attend to address the commission.

… the Coach Investigation?

THE LATEST: The Orange County District Attorney’s Office opted not to pursue a criminal case against ousted former San Clemente High football coach Eric Patton who said this week he was pleased with the decision.

District attorney Spokeswoman Farrah Emami said her office did not file a case because of a lack of sufficient evidence to show criminal intent or a diversion of funds for personal use.

In August 2011, Patton and dozens of coaches throughout Capistrano Unified were placed on administrative leave after a district investigation into their work with Lapes Athletic Apparel.

Patton proclaimed his innocence from the get-go and said he was pleased with the district attorney’s decision.

“I’m very glad that the process worked in this case,” he said.

District spokesman Marcus Walton directed all questions about the district’s investigation to attorney Dan Shinoff who did not return a message by press time.

WHAT’S NEXT: Patton said he’s on paid administrative leave and will retire at the end of the school year. Fellow coaches ChiChi Biehn of Capistrano Valley High and Brent Melbon of Dana Point High still face administrative hearings, said Patton’s attorney Eric Hansen. Patton and his attorney said they would wait until the administrative hearings to decide to take any legal action.

…Vandals at SC High?

THE LATEST: The unofficial “senior ditch San Clemente Times June 7–13, 2012

day” at San Clemente High ended with students vandalizing the campus some time between 11 p.m. Tuesday night and next morning.

San Clemente Police Services Sgt. Scott Kennedy said school officials and students arrived Wednesday morning to find the entire campus covered with toilet paper and glitter, scattered with garbage from numerous overturned trash cans and an electronic scoreboard submerged in the swimming pool.

School officials estimated the damage at about $1,500, including clean up and a replacement of the older model scoreboard on wheels that ended up under water, Kennedy said.

Word of “senior ditch day” was circulated among students via Facebook and text messages, and, according to Kennedy, the incident is being considered a senior prank although the identities of the perpetrators remains a mystery.

WHAT’S NEXT: School Resource Officer Rod Valdez reported that campus surveillance cameras failed to capture footage of the vandals but the investigation is ongoing, Kennedy said.

WHAT’S NEXT: San Diego County’s Department of Environmental Health has no plans to investigate any further, said county spokesman Gig Conaughton.

“My hazmat chief said that in his 25 years of operations, this has never happened before — and we have no evidence to suggest that it might happen again,” he said by email.

Richard Sanchez, director of Orange County’s Department of Environmental Health, said a small crew from his emergency response staff went to the beach the next day — Sunday, May 13 — and searched for similar looking rocks and tested the area for evidence of potentially caustic materials. Sanchez said that after about 90 minutes, they found no evidence of acidic materials and left.

The director said they performed their work on behalf of San Diego County because they didn’t initially realize the beach was outside their jurisdiction.

… Combusting Rocks?

THE LATEST: Elevated levels of phosphate were confirmed in the pair of rocks that caused third-degree burns last month to a San Clemente woman.

The state-certified laboratory still has the pair of rocks, but they would be returned to Lyn Hiner, the mother of two who took home the stones after an afternoon at San Onofre State Beach May 12, according to Deanne Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Health Care Agency.

… Illegal ‘Bath Salts’?

THE LATEST: A San Clemente smoke shop owner was arrested Tuesday, May 29 and charged with selling bath salts and other illegal substances.

Orange County Sheriffs seized 106 grams of the synthetic stimulant “bath salts” and 2.6 pounds of the synthetic cannabinoid “spice” and took into custody Tobacco and Accessories owner Eiad Diab, 38, of San Clemente.

Lt. Doug Doyle of the sheriff’s department’s Special Investigation Bureau said a citizen complaint prompted the investigation. His team and deputies with the South County Narcotics Team conducted the investigation over several weeks, which led to the seizure and arrest.

But Diab chalked up his arrest on the dual misdemeanor charges to a misunderstanding.

“It wasn’t bath salt,” he said. “I don’t have bath salt.”

When the items seized form his store are tested, Diab said they would be determined to be legal substances.

WHAT’S NEXT: Doyle said the sale of bath salts has been on the sheriff department’s radar since before the drug was made illegal by the Drug Enforcement Administration in 2011.

“Since then we’ve been monitoring it and paying attention to it,” the lieutenant said.

THE LATEST: Orange County’s 1.6 million voters mustered a 19.6 percent turnout for the State Primary Tuesday, June 5.

Not surprisingly, the voters endorsed the presidential frontrunners, choosing President Obama for the Democrats and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for the Republicans. In other races, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein earned 34.1 percent of the vote in her bid at re-election with Elizabeth Emken taking in 19.9 percent.

For U.S. representative, Republican Darrell Issa received 67.9 percent of the vote and Jerry Tetalman received 24.9 percent.

State Sen. Mimi Walters took in 63.1 percent of the vote and Steve Young 36.9 percent. Republican State Assemblywoman Diane L. Harkey garnered 69.7 percent to James Corbett’s 30.3 percent.

A small white vehicle with a spoiler was reported speeding and swerving through traffic.

A young man reported to lifeguards that his surfboard had been stolen by an unknown male. The young man stated that he could still see the unknown male in the water using the stolen board to surf.

The landlord of an apartment complex believed that someone might be living in a unit deemed uninhabitable. The caller stated that the sliding door was found open.

ASSIST OUTSIDE AGENCY Calle Cortez, 200 Block (9:22 a.m.) Deputies requested the assistance of Orange County Fire Authority when a 66-year-old man told authorities that he had consumed two liters of alcohol the previous night and believed he might be showing signs of alcohol poisoning.

Saturday, June 2 DISTURBANCE Camino de los Mares/Camino Del Rio (10:33 p.m.) Several juveniles hiding in bushes were reported throwing eggs and tape balls at cars.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON/CIRCUMSTANCE Via Cascadita/Avenida Vaquero (10:03 p.m.) One male and one female were seen taking items from the Salvation Army drop-off area. The caller reported that the two were putting items into a darkcolored sport-utility vehicle with two other occupants inside. Deputies responded, but the group had fled the scene before they arrived.

KEEP THE PEACE Calle Campana, 600 Block (8:31 p.m.)

A man reported that several juveniles playing soccer had damaged his car. The caller requested that deputies be present while he talked to the youths’ parents CITIZEN ASSIST Calle Cuervo, 200 Block (4:28 p.m.)

DISTURBANCE Calle del Cerro, 1100 Block (12:09 a.m.)

Three males had been arguing for unknown reasons. A caller believed the argument might have escalated into a physical altercation when breaking windows were heard. It was unknown if paramedics or fire were needed for assistance.

Thursday, May 31 DISTURBANCE Via Riachuelo, 2800 Block, (9:33 p.m.)

A caller stated that there were several juveniles “being obnoxious” and possibly smoking marijuana in the street four houses down from the caller’s location.

BURGALRY IN PROGRESS Inclinado, 3100 Block (3:14 a.m.) A male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and shorts and carrying a yellow sports bag was seen breaking into a silver sportutility vehicle parked in front of the caller’s location.

Wednesday, May 30

WELFARE CHECK Via Pacifica, 0 Block (3:12 p.m.) A father reported that his daughter was sick and requested a welfare check for her. The caller, who had talked to deputies the previous day regarding the same issue, was doubtful of his daughter’s well being.

Upon further investigation, it was found that there was a restraining order filed against the caller.

DISTURBANCE Avenida La Pata, 100 Block (8:25 p.m.)

Several teenage males were reported skateboarding and causing disruptions in the parking lot of Heritage Christian Church. The caller stated that the boys had been asked to leave but refused and were now “playing chicken” with cars on the street.

WELFARE CHECK Camino de los Mares, 600 Block (4:30 am) A woman had woken up confused and disoriented. She claimed to not know where she was or what was happening around her. While waiting for deputies to respond, the caller realized that she was in her bedroom.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON/CIRCUMSTANCE El Camino Real, 300 Block (11:08 a.m.)

A caller was approached by an unknown male in his 40s who asked the caller if he would like to buy drugs. The unknown male was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, about 160 pounds and with brown hair. He was wearing a blue jacket and black jeans and last seen with a female in the shopping center.

Friday, June 1 SUSPICIOUS PERSON/CIRCUMSTANCE Riachuelo/Llano Street (7:58 p.m.)

A group of four teenage males was seen spraying something on vehicles along the street. The caller told deputies that two of the subjects were on bikes and were last seen hiding behind vehicles on the street.

CITIZEN ASSIST Calle Villario, 200 Block (6:39 p.m.)

A caller reported that she had donated her car to charity and given the tow truck driver repair statements and was now concerned that her credit card number was on the statements. The woman said she was unable to reach anyone from the charity where the vehicle was donated.

Igniting the Imagination SC’s 17th Annual Car Show Gets into Gear Sunday

T

he beefed up 1978 Porsche 911 SC wears its dings like a badge of honor.

Hot off a first-place finish in its G4 class at the All-Porsche Series last weekend at California Speedway, Bill and Scott Brewster’s No. 6 — white with black and silver stripes — will roll down Avenida Del Mar and head to Ola Vista Sunday as part of the Gasoline Alley at the 17th Annual San Clemente Car Show hosted by the Downtown Business Association.

“It’s all beat up, and I’m going keep it all beat up,” said Porsche specialist Scott Brewster. “I want to leave it just like that for the car show.”

There’s something about the car shw that ignites the imagination.

The roar of an engine. The sheen of the chrome. The seemingly endless shapes and sizes.

And visitors to downtown San Clemente Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. will see hundreds of forms of inspiration, including the Brewsters’.

Event organizer Louise Bent said she’s always trying to add something different to the show, and the Gasoline Alley is one way to change up the mix. In addition to the classic, chromed-out roadsters and unique tricked-out cars, the vehicles along Gasoline Alley will have a tie-in to racing, whether on the track or off road. Championship funny car driver Robert Hight will bring his racecar to the alley.

“Now, we’re wanting to modernize and bring new people and new blood in,” Bent said.

A vehicle that bears a striking resemblance to a cartoon character in a popular children’s movie will also park along Del Mar. The organizer said the car show is geared as family friendly, too.

“That’s another thing I want to do is bring in young people,” Bent said. “It’s not all the 55 Chevy any more.”

Last year, organizers started a casual cruise of cars through San Clemente streets Saturday night. But this year, it’s getting a little more formal.

Bent expects 150 cars to participate in what she’s calls a non-organized rally that begins at Kmart on Camino De Estrella at 5 p.m. and winds its way across the city and ends at the Albertson’s near Talega.

Drivers need to arrive early to line up and receive the directions.

Ultimately, all the funds raised for the event goes to the Downtown Business Association to offer programs like its annual Putting on the Glitz. Bent said the organiSan Clemente Times June 7–13, 2012

Track and Builds You could say gasoline runs in Brewsters’ veins. Bill Brewster owns his automotive business on Avenida De La Estrella with his son Scott. Family matriarch Caren Brewster works for Porsche’s race division. Incidentally, her father, top-fuel drag racer Bill Adair, gave his children names so their first initials spelled out C-A-R-S. “We always are involved in San Clemente, and we always love the car show,” said Scott Brewster who entered the city’s first event with a rebuilt 1972 Volkswagen Beetle — with obligatory surf racks up top — at age 16.

Though the family has entered cars over the years, this year’s car will be the Brewsters’ first working racecar.

A former professional driver Bill Brewster has run his automotive business for 40 years. In the past five years, they returned to racing. Sunday’s four-hour endurance race, with their highly modified 1978 Porsche, proves their work is paying off.

The vehicle that competed last week and on display Sunday has custom suspension, a compression ratio of 12.5 to 1, highly modified cam shafts and no less than 20 internal engine modifications, Scott Brewster said.

“We have a custom gear set up for every single track,” he said. “We have a ton of aerodynamic and body changes that we’ve done to make it cut through the air at really high speeds.”

After every race, they rebuild the car to ensure it’s the fastest on the track.

“This one is so on the other side,” Scott Brewster said of their entry in the car show. “I think it’s cool to see the complete

difference in the cars and see what the car can actually do with the most amount of power and that kind of stuff.”

For Scott Brewster, the car show is about the people and, of course, it never hurts to seek out customers.

“I just like all the people, seeing our customers, checking out all the cars this area has to offer and getting business,” he said.

Off-Road Racers San Clemente native Jamie Campbell will bring his custom-built, off-road racecar dubbed RC-10.5 to the car show’s Gasoline Alley.

A longtime racer and builder for 20 years, Campbell struck out on his own last year with his Raceco-USA in Laguna Niguel. His yellow and black Class 10 Unlimited, open-wheel racecar will be his first vehicle in the city’s show.

“We fabricated the entire body out of aluminum,” Campbell said. “It’s pretty elaborate.”

For the shop owner, the car show is a combination of business, pleasure and showcase.

“Hopefully, (visitors) get an idea of how far off-road cars have gone as far as technology, the development in suspension and stuff,” said Campbell who’s attended the car show before as a visitor. “It’s pretty cool.”

He also knows that San Clemente — while best known for its surfing — has a strong presence in the off-road racing industry with professional drivers, teams and builders and as recreational participants.

“San Clemente is known for off-road racing,” said Campbell, a 1993 graduate of San Clemente High. “There’s a lot of history. So it will be pretty neat to have a

car there.”

Campbell grew up riding dirt bikes with his family. His brother Johnny Campbell is the 11-time champion of the Baja 1000, arguably the most prestigious off-road race in North America.

The workmanship of Jamie Campbell’s cars comes from years of working, tinkering and fabricating. Campbell said he worked for Shade Tree Automotive as a kid and idolized off-road enthusiasts the DeNaults, owners of the local hardware store chain.

“I kind of progressed into cars as I grew older and kind of had a passion to work on cars,” he said.

The Raceco-USA owner estimates he has constructed 40 cars in a seven-year period. He builds cars from scratch without a blueprint. He calls it “old-school design.”

While he doesn’t manufacture all the parts, Campbell said he must customize them to fit into place and work cohesively on the entire vehicle.

“I do most of the designs in my head,” he said. “To me, it’s almost like another art form.”

Campbell’s passion will be on full display Sunday with RC-10.5. The cars he builds range in price from $65,000 to $500,000.

His vehicles are made for professionals and for the average guys or gals who enjoy heading to the high desert and pushing themselves and their vehicle to the limit on difficult terrain.

“Most off-road drivers are just like you and I,” Campbell said. “They have full-time jobs. It’s just hobby.”

Hobby or not, the show will bring something for just about everyone.

Local Artist Hosts ‘Living Waters’ Preview

u The Pediatric Life Support Class at Shorecliffs Middle School is hosting its annual blood drive and marrow registry on Friday, June 8 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school.

The Be A Hero, Become A Donor Foundation has set a goal for the blood drive to replenish one-third of the blood supply used at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in San Clemente this year. “We use more than 1,500 units of blood yearly, and most is supplied by the San Diego Blood Bank,” said hospital administrator Tony Struthers. Although walkins are welcome, appointments are preferred and can be made at www.sandiegobloodbank.org. A bone marrow registry will also be held, requiring only a cotton swab to the inside of the cheek to potentially save the life of a person in need of a bone marrow transplant. Shorecliffs Middle School is located at 240 Via Socorro, San Clemente. Parking is available off Via Socorro or Avenida Vista Hermosa.

Golf Tournament to Benefit San Clemente Youth u The San Clemente Friends of the Beaches, Parks and Recreation Foundation will host its second annual Golf Tournament on Friday, July 13. Proceeds will provide funding for the second phase of Courtney’s Sandcastle as well as scholarships for low-income families to send their kids to city recreation programs and courses. Among the donors to date are RBF Consulting, AYSO, Rainbow Sandals, AT&T, The Toll Roads, Al Figer Enterprises, Lynna Youngerman, Workman Molina, Frank’s Collision, CR&R Waste Services, the San Clemente Times and Sunwest. The fees are $150 for individual golfers and $500 for foursomes, which is tax deductible. Boys & Girls Club Leader Receives Full Scholarship u San Clemente’s Andy Brosche was one of 20 recipients nationwide to receive a full-tuition scholarship from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the University of Phoenix to complete an undergraduate degree. Brosche, the operations director at the Boys & Girls Club of the South Coast Area in San Clemente, was one of more than 200 Boys & Girls Club staff, parents and alumni to apply for the scholarship. “I have been blessed with amazing growth through my involvement with the Boys & Girls Club, starting with my Club membership at age 6 to now, being a Club professional in the same club I grew up in,” Brosche said in a news release. Brownies Donate Check, Time to Animal Shelter u Lobo Elementary School’s Brownie Troop 1160 recently visited the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter to donate a check for $170, along with several handmade cat toys. “This is our first year as a troop, and we really want to make a difference in our community,” said troop leader Libby Hawkes in a news release. “The girls decided they wanted to help animals and raised the money on their own. I’m very proud of them.” Pet Project Foundation board member Linda Martin accepted the check and took the girls on a tour of the shelter, including the new cat house.

Parade to Honor Marines u San Clemente will welcome back the city’s adopted unit, the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, who have returned home from a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan.

The 2/4 will be honored in a parade through downtown San Clemente on Thursday, June 14—Flag Day—from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. They will march on foot, accompanied by 2/4 Association members riding in classic cars, the 1st Marine Division Band and members of the City Council. The procession will travel in formation down Avenida Del Mar and conclude at the Marine Monument at Park Semper Fi, where the 2/4 will be saluted at an awards ceremony and memorial service.

The parade is sponsored by the city, the 2/4 Association and The Heritage of San Clemente Foundation. On Friday, June 8, in what has become a local tradition, the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce and The Heritage of San Clemente Foundation will host a barbecue for the 2/4 at San Onofre State Beach.

SC Resident Honored by Biola u Joy Talcott, a San Clemente resident and graduating Biola University student, is one of 32 students who have been accepted into the university’s baccalaureate society for the spring 2012 commencement ceremony. Membership is limited to no more than 5 percent of the graduating class, and those students were given special cords to be worn with their graduation gowns.

Talcott was also honored this spring with membership into the university’s honors society, Epsilon Kappa Epsilon. Admittance into the honors society is by invitation only.

To be eligible, students must have a gradepoint average of 3.75 or higher and meet the qualifications of service toward their community. They must then be nominated by their departmental faculty before final selection by a committee.

Junior Woman’s Rummage Sale Slated for June 9 u The San Clemente Junior Woman’s Club will hold its annual rummage sale fundraiser on Saturday, June 9 from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Rehabilitation Institute of California Adult Day Health Care Center.

The club is comprised of local women dedicated to supporting local organizations by volunteering and raising funds and awareness of charitable causes. Saturday’s sale will feature clothes, electronics, baby items, children’s toys, household items and more.

On Friday, June 8 at the center, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. the club is also accepting donations for the sale. The club requests that no large items, such as furniture, be donated.

Welcome Home Parade Comes to Avenida Del Mar City’s Adopted 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines to march June 14

M

ark your calendars! Come one and come all. On Flag Day, Thursday, June 14 at 10 a.m. — for the first time in 20 years — San Clemente is having a large, patriotic military Wayne Eggleston parade. It starts at the corner of Avenida Del Mar and proceeds down our main street to Park Semper Fi, where there will be an honor and memorial ceremony at 11 a.m.

The public is welcome to both the parade and the ceremony at Park Semper Fi. Take off work, skip school, drop your morning activities and join us to welcome home the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines from Afghanistan. They deserve us to welcome them home. It was a rough tour where they lost five Marines. The 2/4 is our very own Marine unit, adopted by San Clemente in 1996. We were one of the very first in the country to adopt a Marine unit.

The parade was suggested by the 2nd

Battalion 4th Marines Association, a group of retired Marines who will be having their annual convention in San Clemente that week. Many of them are from the Vietnam War era and never had a welcome home parade, much less an acknowledgment or show of gratitude for their service. So we will also be welcoming them home.

Our City Council will be front and center, carrying the banner welcoming the active duty and retired 2/4 members. The council will be followed by a flotilla of classic cars, many of them woodies, carrying 2/4 association members and some San Clemente veterans. The San Clemente Villas will be prominently featured, including our very own local icon Frank Denison, who jumped out of a perfectly good plane onto Normandy Beach during World War II. We have also invited school children from our local schools to attend.

The 1st Marine Division Band will then precede the 500 Marines from 2/4 marching to Park Semper Fi. It was a real coup getting the 1st Marine Division Band, but

persistence pays off. Wal-Mart will be handing out small American flags along the parade route, so be sure to pick one up and wave it proudly as the Marines march by. The band will also perform patriotic music at Park Semper Fi for the awards and memorial service. We will have enough chairs for all who wish to attend, so please plan on showing our small-town community spirit.

On the day, there will be some road closures, and parking will not be permitted on Avenida Del Mar or on Avenida Cabrillo, where the Marines and band will be lining up for the event. Portions of north and south El Camino Real, between the 100 and 200 blocks, will be closed at 9 a.m. to allow the parade to make a grand entrance at the top of Del Mar. Streets will be open and parking permitted after the parade. So mark your calendars, and bring your friends and neighbors. Make it a carpool day.

For many years, I have lived in San Clemente and have seen the old AT&T Microwave Tower overlooking the city of San Clemente. When I was little, I always thought it was the Iron Giant standing on top of the hill and protecting me and my neighborhood. Over the years, workers came to dismantle the tower, stripping it down to the frame. Once being stripped down to the frame, neighborhood kids would crawl under the gate that surrounds the tower and climb the tower. The kids never damaged the tower or “tagged” the San Clemente Times June 7–13, 2012

tower with their art. They would just climb it. I recently walked by the tower and saw that video cameras have been posted on all sides. A sign has also been posted saying that there is 24-hour surveillance of the tower. I have also seen police cars driving up to the tower.

Do you really think that video surveillance and police monitoring of an abandoned AT&T microwave tower is the best way to use the taxpayer’s money? If it’s such a safety hazard, why not take it down? Don’t you think it’s tempting for young kids to climb and possibly vandalize? It’s not being used for anything. Take

Kempton’s historical reference (SC Times, April 19) “to the good old days” has absolutely nothing to do with the Tea Party platform but his intent was

Its mission is to honor U.S. military personnel who have given their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. American Heroes Tribute supports events by providing the banners for display, thereby honoring, preserving and celebrating their memory. ”These brave young men and women serve so courageously for the freedoms we all enjoy,” said Konni BrooksherMartin, one board member, who put it so beautifully. “Some give the greatest sacrifice to this, the greatest country. His writing is impressive, ironic and cute on a grade-school level. He equates today’s Tea Party movement with “thugs,” “Yippies burning down buildings,” blood-letting, suppression of women (Is that similar to the left-denigrating Palin?), “illegitimate children”—as in quality people like John Edwards and the Rev. Jessie Jackson—and the “savage state of slavery,” none of which addresses the Tea Party’s free and civil exercise of the rights enumerated in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Where is the historical reference to President Obama’s Weatherman buddy, Professor Bill Ayers, blowing up buildings and killing a police officer in the ’60s? I suppose it’s an “inconvenient truth” and a piece of progressive history to be suppressed in the liberal world.

And so, “my fellow Americans,” Kempton has demonstrated a perfect example of his idea of civility and compromise. In his words, “stop whining” and just turn over your rights and control to the government.

Light one up and “everything’s gonna be all right.” But the government is not all right.

It’s all left. California is the poster child for everything wrong with Kempton’s concept.

It’s time to speak up in spite of despots that would have you silenced. See the Fairness Doctrine, another oxymoronic idea from the left.

Kempton’s logic reminds me of a Laura Jones song about a ship made of sticks and straw, Sinkin’ Soon, also known as the California and federal governments. His arguments are a pile of something, maybe more sticks and straws. He should stop his ranting and raving. It sounds too much like “whining” to me. Dude, do us a favor and ride your tired, philosophical wave to nowhere. It’s where your reasoning will take us all.

Make way for the freedom train. Free people will never be silenced. Silenced people will never be free. So hit the history books. You missed the most important points.

NUCLEAR POWER DEFENDER MISGUIDED, RISKS ABOUND ROGER JOHNSON, San Clemente

I am asking our Legislature to do their job and create a balanced budget with no cuts to education. California is falling drastically behind in every educational measure for student success including: dropout rates, test scores, funding per pupil and teacher-student ratios. If our education system continues its demise, we may never recover. I implore our state leaders to make our children and the future of our state a priority again.

COMMON SENSE ON TRAIL A MUST TJ MCCARTHY, San Clemente

This letter is intended for all the spandex wearing, leg shaving, trail hogging and speed-loving kooks who mob down the hills of the Trestles Trail in excess of 30 miles per hour. For the second time in two years, I have been knocked down by a group of overzealous cyclists. The first time was last year, when I was five months pregnant. And, no, none of the offending cyclists bothered to stop and check on my well being. Therefore, I make a simple request: Share the trail. Slow down and stay as far away from pedestrians as possible. You ask cars to share the road, even though most of you refuse to obey the rules of the road, such as actually stopping at stop signs or cycling within the confines of your very own bike lane on Avenida del Presidente and Cristianitos Road. Therefore, it stands to reason that you too should be sympathetic to the little

guy or gal out running to soak up some vitamin D and improve our cardiovascular health. Like you, I am out there, marine layer or sunshine, to improve my physical fitness. But I never forget to look around before changing direction, and I always hug the right side of the trail. I do this as much for my own safety as well as others using the trail. When I see or hear walkers and slower joggers, I run around them. I give them a wide berth so as not to startle them and cause an accident. Why can’t cyclists do the same?

As a lowly little runner, minding my own business, why do you cyclists feel the need to draft me? Under my own power, I have four gears, walk, jog, run and sprint.

Sadly, none of these gears carries me more than 7 mph. Is it really necessary to see how close you can get before swerving around runners at the very last second? If so, I think you need more time on the road training and less time staring at the mirror agonizing over how built your calves are getting. For now, I remain against any more rules and regulations that inevitably come with their pretty signs, speed bumps, speed limits, painted stick figures and letters on the road. As far as I am concerned, the fun police have more than enough laws encompassing everything to do with the trail and beach. However, I am in favor of all of us using common sense on the trail. Back off and stop spooking runners and walkers.

Letter writer Devin Kruse is painfully misinformed about San Onofre (SC Times, May 24). It was not until Fukushima last year that it became obvious to everyone that nuclear power is extremely dangerous. Many who formerly believed that accidents can’t happen here are now considering moving. Others thinking about buying a home or business are concluding that it is smart to stay away until the plant is shut.

The idea of evacuating by foot or bike is very dangerous unless you plan to bike upwind into the ocean. Radioactive fallout travels with the wind and will cover the southwest in a few days. If the plant continues emitting radiation — as Fukushima has done for more than a year — no one should be outside without a hazmat suit.

I wonder how many hikers or bikers own hazmat suits?

If you are in a home or car, do not open windows or doors for any reason, and do not run the heater or air conditioning. Do not let pets indoors, since they would contaminate everything they touch. Parents will not be permitted to pick up their kids at school. Children will be bused to the triage area separately. The problem is that there are not enough buses, and the roads could be impassable. Inhaling or swallowing invisible particles of radiation can be lethal, and remember that children and pregnant women are far more vulnerable to even small amounts of radiation.

As for decommissioning costs — about a billion per reactor — this will not come from taxpayers. Look on your electric bill: Money is already automatically extracted from everyone every month.

The statement that no one has died in the U.S. from a nuclear disaster is completely false. So many people died or contracted cancer from radiation that the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act was passed in 1990. The government has approved over 21,000 claims. When the nuclear industry spreads the lie that no one died at the Three Mile Island disaster, they conveniently leave out the word “immediately.” The deaths and cancer cases occurred months and years later.

For example, all the helicopter pilots who monitored the plume died from cancer.

It may be dangerous to live near a nuclear power plant, even if there never is an accident. The National Academy of Sciences, acting at the request of the NRC, has recently proposed studying cancer streaks within a 30-mile radius of San Onofre. Lucky San Clemente. We were the only place west of the Mississippi chosen for study.

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION and the baby blues

What is postpartum depression? We hear that label being tossed around all the time, but there seems to be much confusion as to what it is. Postpartum depression is not the “baby blues.” The baby blues is a term used to describe the common feelings of weepiness and slight overwhelm that occur in up to 80% of women following birth. The baby blues typically disappear around two weeks postpartum and cause no serious life disruption for the new mother.

Postpartum depression, on the other hand, is a clinical depression, meaning that the symptoms are severe enough to necessitate psychological treatment. Postpartum depression can appear anytime during the first year postpartum.

While each woman suffering with postpartum depression has her own experience, the most common symptoms are sad mood, irritability, a constant feeling of overwhelm, excessive worry, hopelessness, sleep disturbances, struggles to bond with the baby, loss of interest in things previously enjoyed, changes in appetite, difficulty concentrating, and, in extreme cases, thoughts of suicide.

In our society, there are strong “expectations” for birth to bring much joy and excitement to new mothers. So, when postpartum depression surfaces, it is often with shame, disbelief, guilt, and confusion. In my practice, I often hear mothers plead, “I was so looking forward to being a mom.

How can I feel this way?” My patients are often looking for answers as to “Why me?” and “How can I make this disappear?” While postpartum depression is certainly not the normal way for mothers to feel, it is, unfortunately, quite common, afflicting between 15-20% of mothers.

Risk factors for developing postpartum depression include having a personal or family history of depression or anxiety, a lack of family or friend support, a history of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and thyroid dysfunction. The promising news about postpartum depression is that it can be treated with great success by professionals trained in this area. Psychological approaches include cognitive-behavioral therapy, coaching the mother on proven self-care techniques, eliciting family and friend support, and medication therapy.

AT THE MOVIES: ‘SNOW WHITE’ MAKES AN EFFORT In Universal’s fantasy blockbuster Snow White & the Huntsman, how can a queen played by Charlize Theron — one of Hollywood’s most beautiful women — envy someone as tomboyish and casual as Kristen Stewart? And how is it that, amazingly, the Oscar-winning actress is less impressive than the Twilight star? The live-action twist on the classic fairytale adds a few new elements, a few new characters and a couple of surprises. Like the original Brothers Grimm tale, there is a young princess (Stewart), an evil queen (Theron), a man (Chris Hemsworth) sent to hunt her, a prince (Sam Claflin), some dwarves and a magic mirror. There’s also the queen’s creepy brother (Sam Spruell), who actually is a bit scarier than his sister. Some fairies and black crows also make an unnerving appearance. Snow White boasts some of the most visually attractive art direction and cinematography yet this year, and that alone makes the film worth viewing. Of the leads, Stewart surprisingly has the most impressive foreign accent and subtle performance, while Theron creates a more animated© 2012 Universal Studios turned-hammy character, more Razzie worthy than Oscar. Unfortunately, first-time director Rupert Sanders who had to work with stale dialogue and underdeveloped characters, doesn’t glamorize his heroine and in fact makes her less passive than previous portrayals. For an entertaining, memorable adaptation of the fairytale, movie fans would enjoy Disney’s 1937 classic and the 1997 TV movie with Sigourney Weaver more. — Megan Bianco

Start Livin’, Donovan Frankenreiter’s fifth album, is “basically a love album,” says the Orange County musician.

“Most of the songs are about my wife and our two boys, and the life that we’ve built together in Hawaii.” Thanks to Frankenreiter’s infectious warmth and finely honed pop sensibilities, each song has the singular effect of drawing the listener into that bright and breezy world for a blissedout moment.

What is the most meaningful song on your album? I don’t know. Maybe “Start Livin’.” It’s the theme of the new album. It’s all about living in the moment and enjoying what you have today. I heard a great quote the other day that said, “Yesterday is the past, tomorrow is the future and today is a gift—that is why they call it the present.” That is, Start Livin.’

How influential is living in Hawaii to your songwriting?

It’s very influential but not everything I write about. I write about the life I live on the road and what happens when you are out there. I think living in Hawaii is more inspired by the sounds you hear on the album, the lap steel (guitar), the uke, etc.

What other projects are you working on? I am on the road so much that I find myself working on the most important project–just trying to be with my family as much as possible.

Will you have any time to take a break and catch any of nearby San Clemente’s superlative breaks? Yes, of course.

It’s one of the best surf towns in the U.S. with some of the best surfers in the world. It’s where I grew up surfing. I love San Clemente’s beaches.

TOP HONORS u Jonathan Ord, CEO of DealerSocket, Inc. in San Clemente, was announced on May 10 as one of 15 finalists for the Orange County Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. According to a news release, the awards program recognizes entrepreneurs who demonstrate excellence and extraordinary success in such areas as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities.

In 2001, Ord co-founded DealerSocket, which provides customer relationship management services for automotive dealerships throughout the U.S. and Canada.

DealerSocket has received numerous recognitions, including Best Overall Company by the Stevie International Business Awards in 2008 and Best Management Team by the American Business Awards in 2009. Ord himself was honored with the 2010 Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award from the Orange County Business Journal. Final winners for the Ernst & Young Awards will be announced at a special gala Thursday, June 7 at the St. Regis Resort in Dana Point.

MILESTONES u This year marks Del Mar Watch & Clock Repair’s 23rd year of serving the San Clemente community. The shop was founded in 1989 by Metodiva “Ted” Stovskoski. Originally from Macedonia, Stovskoski picked San Clemente as the location for his store due to the city’s tranquil, family-oriented atmosphere.

“Del Mar Watch & Clock has established itself in the community and surrounding areas as a quality repair shoppe, with dedicated customer service and detail on the small details,” said Gus Juanbelz, store manager. “[Over the past 23 years] we have expanded the store to cater to customers with house calls [and] jewelry repairs and sales.”

GIVING BACK u Art and environmental protection work hand in hand in a surfboard repair shop owner’s effort to give back to the surfing community. Randall Kramar, owner of DingDrX Surfboard Repair, is restoring a G. Pang surfboard with original artwork depicting a diver removing litter from the ocean. From July 1 through July 10, the surfboard will be put on an eBay auction. Kramar will donate all proceeds to the Surfrider Foundation, an organization dedicated to the protection of oceans and beaches.

“I’m the only new guy there,” said Pierce, who started in the restaurant business at age 15. “I’m pretty comfortable with the food coming out of the kitchen. It’s kind of one of those things. You don’t want to fix what’s not broken.”

In March, BeachFire founders David and Allison Donaldson announced the sale of the restaurant after 10 years of ownership. At the time, the couple said they had parted ways with the business because of the grueling schedule, David Donaldson’s health and the economy.

Pierce, a longtime BeachFire customer, said when he learned of the restaurant’s sale, he jumped at the chance to become owner.

“I liked the culture. I liked the people. I wanted it,” he said.

Prior to taking the reins at BeachFire, Pierce was the Napa Valley area director for high-end grocer Dean & Deluca and worked for other chains, such as Roy’s Restaurant and the Daily Grill. u Little Thai Hut opened its doors at 641 Camino de los Mares, Ste. D110 in January.

Should You Advertise in a Newspaper?

Not advertising is like being alone in a dark room with the door closed. You know you are there, but no one else does. Most businesses have to advertise if they are going to succeed because it is the basic way new customers learn they are out there.

Yet it is surprising how many small business owners assume that their great idea, or cool location, or bright sign, or good looks, or whatever else it is, will bring people in the door. Here’s what brings new people in the door: advertising. Sure, marketing is great and important, as is networking, and social networking, and customer service, and word of mouth; but advertising is the route with potentially the biggest payoff. Advertising turns the light on —it lets people know you are out there.

Which then begs the question: In this Internet era, is newspaper advertising still a good choice?

The answer is yes.

Today, it’s not that difficult to get lost in an online advertising campaign, but offline, in the paper, you can be a big fish in a smaller pond, and at a fairly reasonable cost. Sure, younger people are generally not in the newspaper-reading habit. But if you are targeting a demographic older than, say,

30, newspapers can make the most sense. Also, who is the bigger consumer 20 year-olds or 30 and above? Yep, 30 and above; those who have more money, more education and read newspapers!

I am partial to newspaper advertising for many reasons.

•Your ad is physical and, as such, can be clipped (no need for printing from online.) It can contain details, prices, offers and contact information that is sometimes more difficult to get across (and remembered) with the electronic media.

•Because it is tangible, a newspaper ad is not a click, or DVR fast forward, or changing away to another channel.

•People take time with the paper, and thus can really read your ad.

•Studies show that newspaper readers tend to be a little older, better educated, and better off, which sounds like a great customer to many a business.

•As indicated, with fewer ads, yours can stand out.

It’s that time of year again when we get a first look at things to come for high school football. This year, the San Clemente Tritons will make their first public appearance at Thalassa Stadium on Thursday, June 7 at 5 p.m. Last year, the Tritons came within one win of the Pac-5 title, losing to the Santa Margarita Eagles in the final round at Angel Stadium. But, like every spring, teams start anew. Fresh faces pop up in training camp, and other players step into starring roles. Here are a few players to keep an eye on in the June 7 game.

he Orange County Water Polo Club used to call the JSerra High swimming pool its home. But after winning the bid to rent out the pool at the new Vista Hermosa Sports Park, the club has a new place to build on its promising future.

Head coach Peter Asic, who has led teams at Santa Margarita High and JSerra High in recent years, had 172 kids in the JSerra program. Eleven different instructors were brought on to handle the large number of children who showed up every week to learn the game’s fundamentals.

But after the move, the numbers dwindled.

“Right now, in this area of San Clemente, there are a whole bunch of new families. The ocean is so close, and everybody surfs or they’re all in the water,” Asic said. “This is a great venue to build the program up from nothing. We started here a month ago with seven kids; now we are up to 30.”

At the June 1 session held on the pool deck, there were about 30 kids in the water with three coaches watching over them while they ran through drills.

Asic plans on rebuilding the base that was lost in the move to San Clemente through the expertise of his coaching staff. Aside from Asic, who came to America from Croatia on a full scholarship to play for Pepperdine, where he was an All-American, the coaching staff consists of an NCAA national champion and San Clemente High record holders.

One member of Asic’s coaching staff is Greg Farrier, who was raised in San Clemente and volunteers his time to help the start-up program at the Vista Hermosa Park. Farrier also holds swim records at San Clemente High and played at USC on an athletic scholarship. Once he saw that his hometown built a new aquatics facility

Travis Wilson and learned the ins and outs of the Triton offense. He should have a strong case to be the Tritons’ opening-day QB in the fall.

Landon Cook, left back: Cook was third on the team in total tackles last season with 73 and averaged 5.2 per game. At the middle linebacker position, Cook will be instrumental in the Tritons’ defensive efforts.

Christian Bailey, defensive back/ wide receiver: Bailey played effectively on both sides of the ball last year for the Tritons, catching 24 passes for 244 yards while piling up 62 tackles and two interceptions on defense. —SB

and that a well-known water polo program was coming, he knew he had to lend a hand. “(San Clemente) has on its doorstep now one of the elite water polo programs in the country, I think,” Farrier said. “I’ve lived in San Clemente for 43 years…I haven’t coached in a number of years, but I’m now volunteering my time to make sure this program gets off the ground.”

With all the kids doing drills in the pool, the splashing and yelling makes the scene seem hectic, but the coaches all have total control over their pupils. Every one of the instructors isn’t afraid to get into the pool to show the kids how to perfect a certain technique.

Farrier, a former Olympic swimmer, will take one group over to the lane sanctioned part of the pool for swimming training while Justin Kroeze, who was coached

by Asic as a young swimmer at Santa Margarita High School, works with others on the egg-beater swim technique and passing drills. Christina Kuno, another San Clemente High alum on the staff, works with the 8-and-under age group on shooting.

The club has won 38 first place medals since its inaugural season in 2005, and on June 2, the 10U and 14U teams both qualified for the Junior Olympics, putting this club, and San Clemente water polo, back in the spotlight. SC Page 42

WEST COAST FUTBOL CAPTURES CHAMPIONSHIP The West Coast Futbol Club’s Boys U16 team recently captured the 2012 US Youth Soccer Cal South National Cup Championship. The team will now represent Southern California in the US Soccer Far West Regionals to be held in Phoenix, Ariz. in June.

Three members from the team reside in San Clemente: Dylan Struthers, Trent Shaw and Alec Cucuk.

BASEBALL AZTECS, BEARS WIN SC LITTLE LEAGUE TITLES On June 1 the Bears claimed the San Clemente Little League National AA Team title with a 10-5 victory over the Cardinals. The Bears went into the tournament ranked fourth overall but won three consecutive games to take home first place. The Aztecs went a perfect 16-0 in their 2012 season to claim the SCLL AA-American League title.

On May 30 the Aztecs defeated the Anteaters 5-4.

SOFTBALL SOFTBALL ALL-STARS WIN BIG The San Clemente girls All Star softball team had their annual Memorial Day Tournament May 26 at Steed Park, with the 10U and 12U teams taking home the first place trophies. The 8U team made it all the way to the finals but lost a heartbreaker in extra innings to visiting Jurupa.

The 10U HeriKanes gave up two early runs to Vista but rallied back to a 12-4 victory. Catie Mueller was the game’s MVP after going two for three with three RBIs and a run scored.

The 12U Intensity rolled through the weekend, going undefeated as they made their way to the finals. In the last game of the weekend, the Intensity handily defeated Jurupa 12-1.

Shoes for Sheba Off and Running San Clemente’s Sara Kebede collects shoes to donate to Ethiopian runners

A

fter visiting her father’s homeland of Ethiopia as a fourth-grader, San Clemente native Sara Kebede felt a strong connection to the young people living there. The more she engaged with the locals, the more she felt a sense of kinship with them. When she left the African nation, she knew, even at her age, that she would return and help those she encountered. The next step was figuring out a meaningful way to do that.

The answer came in the form of something most of us take for granted: Shoes.

As a junior cross country runner at San Clemente High, Kebede noticed that her teammates would discard their running shoes after a little wear and tear.

“I saw my teammates replacing ‘old’ shoes constantly when they still had many good miles left on them,” Kebede said. “I decided to start collecting those shoes, and my efforts grew from there.”

Thus, Shoes for Sheba was born.

Since the conception of that initial idea to collect those shoes, Kebede has donated more than 1,500 pairs of running shoes to younger, female Ethiopian runners in hopes that they will continue their training in the rich Ethiopian tradition of distance running.

Ethiopia is famous for producing toplevel distance running talent; the problem is that so many of the children are too poor to afford the basic amenities to start on an athletic career path. Kebede noticed how the men’s running teams are usually the ones that receive the most funding, while the women’s teams are more of an

BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD • As the 2011-2012 track and field season drew closer, senior Herbert Gamboa was not even sure if he was going to compete for the Tritons. Having done a full year of track his junior year, Gamboa was hesitant.

He wasn’t sure if he could put in enough time to get to where he wanted to be athletically for the spot. After a season in which he blew past the competition in the 100-meter sprint, he’s happy with the decision he made to stick with it.

“I was playing baseball my freshman and sophomore years,” said Gamboa, who

afterthought in terms of money invested.

That’s why Shoes for Sheba was initially targeted towards helping young girls who do not have the means to purchase a decent pair of running shoes.

Because of the recent outpouring of support, Kebede has accepted not just women’s shoes but men’s as well, expanding the scope of the project.

Kebede has made two trips to Ethiopia to personally donate the shoes to different

athletic groups and running teams, the most recent taking place in December of 2011.

The cross country runner admitted that the hardest part so far has been the distribution process and the red tape created by the Ethiopian government.

“How it has worked so far is that I’ve been sending shoes whenever someone I know is heading to Ethiopia, and they will take a bag or two for me,” Kebede said.

was also a standout linebacker for the Tritons’ football team. “I’m glad I didn’t do baseball, and track and field worked out so well.”

Gamboa had a career year in the 100 meter, winning the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title and making it all the way to the State Finals, where he finished sixth overall, after posting a time of 10.73 seconds.

The 10.73 Gamboa posted at State wasn’t his best race of the year. The memory of the season he’ll carry with him will be the day he set a personal record in the 100 at the OC Championships April 21, when he ran a 10.57. “(The OC Championships) were great.

I felt great that whole day, and I set a (personal record),” Gamboa said.

Now that his high school career has come to an end, Gamboa will head to the University of Montana on a full academic

scholarship to play football, where he hopes to work his way up through the practice squads and special teams as a freshman and eventually become a starter.

Senior discus thrower Quaid Vuncannon captured the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title this season but narrowly missed the cut to throw in the State finals June 2. The top nine throwers in the prelims qualified to move on to the finals, but Vuncannon finished 10th, throwing a distance of 170-08. Four inches separated him from making the finals.

“I definitely matured as a person and as a thrower this season,” said Vuncannon, who will attend UCI next fall. “I’m looking forward to competing at UCI next year.

I’m excited to see what happens.”

“Obviously, this is not the ideal method, and we are currently working on putting a method in place for distribution on a greater scale.”

A major road block to Kebede’s cause has been Ethiopia’s sizeable import taxes placed on the donations. Kebede’s father has been working closely with the Ethiopian Athletic Federation in hopes of getting the shipping costs covered and the import tax waived. Kebede said that they are close to reaching an agreement on the waiver.

Kebede also got a major assist from Ethiopian running legend Haile Gebrselassie, who accompanied Kebede throughout her December visit. Kebede said Gebrselassie has been instrumental in moving along the distribution process, putting an influential face to her cause.

When Kebede last visited Ethiopia, she was honored by the different teams she has been involved with and ran some laps with team members. She also met officials from different regions, who told her of other athletic teams who are in need.

The trip in December also prompted Kebede to expand the range of her work to include sports bras. Before she shipped out a large batch of shoes in April, Kebede asked each of her San Clemente High teammates to go out and buy two sports bras to go along with the shipment.

Kebede and Shoes for Sheba are showing no signs of slowing down, as the donation boxes keep popping up inside running shoe retail stores around San Clemente.

Senior midfielder Aaron Self was named a US Lacrosse All-American, first team All-County and first team All-South Coast League. Sophomore attack Peyton Garrett also received All-County honors, being named to the second team, to go along with a first team All-SCL nod.

Garrett was also named the South Coast League Offensive Player of the Year.

Junior attack Robbie Burns was named second team All-County on attack and first team All-SCL. Rounding out the Tritons’ first team All-SCL representatives was long stick midfield Stone Slims.

Earning second-team All-SCL honors were Jay Kassity (attack), David Anthony (defense), Jordan Riggs (midfield) and Thomas Ahola (goalie).

And it’s no wonder; Tai has been putting in long hours sharpening his skills at T Street and Lasuens, prepping for the upcoming RipCurl Gromsearch and Quiksilver King of the Groms contests. His most recent victory came at the CSF May 5 event in Oceanside where he took the win in Boys U16 along with a fourth place finish in Boys U18. In school, he is a dedicated student with a 3.6 GPA, an accelerated course load and plans to tackle some AP college prep classes next year. Teen’s year-long journey comes to an end…Or does it?

hen 13-year-old Meg Roh paddled out June 1 at San Clemente State Beach, at the Four Doors surf spot to be exact, she was accomplishing a goal that she had set for herself exactly one year before.

When she caught her first wave on that overcast day, it was the 365th day in a row that she had gone out and surfed.

Whether it was choppy, raining or glassy, it didn’t matter to Roh, who goes to Ladera Ranch Middle School but surfs for Marco Forster’s team. All she wanted to do was get in the water with her white and pink longboard so she could mark off another day on the calendar she keeps at home.

On June 2, the day after her yearly goal came to fruition, one could only expect to find her at the beach surfing with all her friends.

“It felt pretty good (to surf the whole year),” Roh said the day after day No. 365.

“It feels pretty good to accomplish your goals… I basically wanted to get better at surfing and to practice more.”

Practicing every day of the year meant rising at the crack of dawn with her stepdad Sam Hann, her mom Sue and brown lab Kona, heading down to whatever beach they wanted to surf that day and getting in a quick session before school.

“There was never a day where I thought she wouldn’t be up for it,” Hann, 52, said.

“I would wake her up at 5 a.m. and ask if she wanted to surf. I’d go take a shower and come downstairs and she’d be ready saying ‘Let’s go.’”

There were times when the weather was bad, but that was never enough to drive Roh away from the water. Hann recalls several instances where he had to go stand underneath a vacant lifeguard tower in a rain suit so he could keep a watchful eye on Roh.
