Five things San Clemente should know this week Socks Fore Heroes Takes Place Sept. 12 THE LATEST: The Socks Fore Heroes golf tournament will help raise funds for the San Clemente Marine Corps Support Group (SCMCSG) on Monday, Sept. 12.

True to the tournament’s name, the funds will be used to help provide socks for active duty military members, who are in constant need of socks, according to Carla Hogan of the SCMCSG. “People think the need for socks has diminished, but it has increased because there are still a lot of units in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they’re getting less help and living under more Spartan conditions,” Hogan said. “These guys are out there with fewer resources, and the bases that they’re at are in the middle of nowhere doing forward operations with Iraqi National Army and Afghanistan National Army.”

Hogan said the budget for socks is about $5,000 per month.

“Anything that we make from the tournament will go to Socks Fore Heroes,” she said.

WHAT’S NEXT: The tournament will take place at noon with a shotgun start on Sept.

12 at Bella Collina Towne and Golf Club.

Registration is $200 per player or four for $750. Sponsoring a Marine to play is $175, and the steak dinner following the tournament is $50 per person. A high-ranking Marine will give a speech during the dinner. —Eric Heinz

Man Shot Twice in the Leg in San Clemente THE LATEST: An unidentified man was shot twice in the leg and suffered non-lifethreatening injuries just before 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, near the Rite Aid at W. Canada and El Camino Real, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials. The man was taken to an area hospital. He is expected to survive, OCSD officials said.

Police are still conducting an investigation on the incident. The weapon used was a handgun, but officers said they weren’t sure what caliber or the make and model.

OCSD Lt. Scott Ostash said there is an ongoing investigation and the area is an active crime scene. Ostash said he would San Clemente Times September 8-14, 2016

Currently there are no suspects, Ostash said.

The incident occurred in the same place where, on Aug. 12, a man shot at someone driving a white truck in the parking lot of the Rite Aid. A suspect was eventually taken into custody in the incidents, and Sheriff’s deputies found a handgun and spent bullet casings near the area.

241 Toll Roads Extension Proposals Reappear

THE LATEST: After the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), the board overseeing The Toll Roads in Orange County, was unable to extend the 241 down through Trestles and San Clemente a few years ago, a new development proposal is in the works.

During the Tuesday night City Council meeting, officials discussed proposals on which the TCA is working. Two major proposals concerned Council members. One would extend the project through Avenida La Pata and connect to Avenida Pico. Another would construct a toll road around the eastern portions of San Clemente and into Cristianitos. The primary goal is to get the 241, which ends at Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano, connected to the I-5 freeway.

Another alternative would extend the southernmost part of La Pata to Cristianitos.

Most of the concerns the Council had regarded the increase in traffic and construction through the rest of the city.

Councilwoman Kathy Ward brought this discussion to light, as she is the city’s liaison to the TCA. “La Pata is open. We’re hearing great comments from all our residents; even people who do not live in Talega are saying they’ve noticed a change,” Ward said.

“Some are saying it’s cut down 30 minutes on their commute.”

Ward asked Tom Bonigut, deputy director of public works, if La Pata would continue to be a road without tolls despite the extension, but he said he wasn’t sure.

The proposal has not yet been through an environmental review.

“I feel like I’m on acid watching this. I mean look at it. This is crazy,” Councilman Tim Brown said. “Nobody in their right mind would want this to happen.”

Past city councils have opposed proposals for the connection.

track, through the San Clemente area to San Juan was proposed, but the Council wasn’t keen on that idea either.

The Council voted unanimously to pass a resolution to oppose the ideas to connect La Pata and Cristianitos to the 241, but did seek to explore some of the other alternatives. There were more than a dozen different ideas. The main reason the extension is highly sought by stakeholders in the area is to alleviate as much traffic as possible from the I-5 freeway.

Councilwoman Lori Donchak said she wanted to have a traffic study on how La Pata has alleviated traffic in the area.

“My hypothesis is the traffic need for the 241 extension has shrunk because La Pata is in place now,” Donchak said.

Mayor Bob Baker said there are traffic studies from 10 years ago that prove the 241 extension is a “road to nowhere.”

According to the TCA website, collecting tolls was the main revenue source until state funding was depleted and revenue bonds were sold to make up the difference.

THE LATEST: The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce will host the second annual San Clemente Surf Classic in order to provide a tournament for the youth of the city. This tournament takes place during the 29th annual SeaFest, which includes the popular clam chowder cook-off.

City Approves Funding for Rideshare, Trolley THE LATEST: City Council voted to fund its share of the grant from the Orange County Transportation Authority for both the rideshare and the trolley program.

The city will pay $146,000 over the seven years of the grant’s existence.

Mulling Sober Living Homes Federal, state and local officials discuss issues of sober living homes

undreds gathered the evening of Thursday, Sept. 1, at the San Clemente Community Center to listen to a panel of experts and representatives discuss issues surrounding sober living homes. Some people had to stand along the walls as all available seats were filled by the start of the discussion.

U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista) hosted the event along with local officials. Issa is running against Democratic candidate Doug Applegate for the 49th U.S. Congressional district election this year.

“This evening is about a crisis going on not just in Orange County, but around the country,” Issa said. “We have a drug and alcohol crisis, and we have millions of people who are in need of help. That problem is not going away.”

State Sen. Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel), who was a social worker before her political career, said she has dealt with sober living issues personally in her neighborhood. Both Bates and State Assembyman Bill Brough brought legislation to their respective health committees during the 2016 session, but those bills did not make it to the floor.

“Current state and federal laws allow (sober living providers) to stay in typical households in typical neighborhoods to reenter and integrate with the larger drugfree community,” Bates said. “Sober living homes that don’t operate as intended have become a burden for places like San Clemente.”

Bates told a couple stories where she came across patients from sober living homes who had been kicked out and had nowhere to go.

San Clemente Councilman Tim Brown said his neighborhood experienced an increase in sober living homes in the last few years.

“They had a guy come in from Chicago and he signed a lease and opened a sober living home, and it was not run really well,” Brown said during a phone interview on Tuesday. “Immediately we started having tons of problems. There was a stabbing in the home, and then last year, early in the year, there was one overdose death in the house.”

Brown said, through the city’s Code Compliance Services, he learned that another death that took place earlier this year was the operator of a sober living home.

no lessee and everyone was still there getting medication and treatment,” Brown said, adding the operator was already on the verge of eviction.

Todd Leishman, an attorney with Best, Best & Krieger, which is contracted with the city of San Clemente, said the rise in the number of sober living homes can be traced back to 2000 when California passed Prop 36. This allowed people with drug-use convictions to seek probation and treatment instead of incarceration.

On top of that, the Affordable Care Act allowed insurance companies to cover more people for various ailments, including recovery.

“You’ll notice people come from all over the country to get sober here,” Leishman said. “When it comes to local regulations, there are a number of constraints.”

People in recovery are considered a protected class of citizens under the Fair Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Therefore, cities are not al-

lowed to ban sober living homes outright.

“I gotta say, it’s a tricky labyrinth,” Leishman said. “Think what you will, if you’re in recovery, as a matter of law… you (are) disabled. That makes sense to a lot of us who know someone in recovery.

On the state level, the health and safety code says any facility that is trying to help people that are in recovery … has to be licensed by the state. The policy concern is we have a vulnerable population and we want to make sure the services are legitimate.”

Leishman said many sober living home operators say they’re not providing services at the home; instead residents are treated at an off-site facility. He said the law is very broad regarding the facilities that do and do not need licensure.

“There’s a big disconnect between the state law and the providers,” Leishman said. “If your (home has fewer than) six people, then you’re considered to be a single family. If you have a license for six

and fewer and you’re violating the license, then it’s not as hands-off. It’s a very narrow protection.”

T. Peter Pierce of Richards, Watson & Gershon, which represents public entities throughout California, said his law firm is representing the city of Newport Beach, which currently has a case against the proliferation of unlicensed and non-compliant sober living residences. Currently the outcome of that law is in U.S. Ninth Circuit Court limbo, as the court put an injunction on the city’s law.

“There’s a kind of discrimination that courts look to, and at the time they’re occurring, you wouldn’t think they are,” Pierce said. “You may have someone who comes to a public meeting or a city councilman makes a remark against sober living homes. Under the law as it now exists, and as the Supreme Court interprets it, courts can use those comments as a basis to conclude that any regulation that is adopted after those comments are made is discriminatory.”

Jaque Saulpaw of Interfaith Community Services in San Diego County, which oversees some sober living homes, said when sober living homes are run properly, they can be successful and help people.

Saulpaw said every time they open a sober living home, they check to make sure it’s amenable to the neighborhood and city officials.

“The community is as important, and that’s what I’ve been taught, and that’s how we run our business,” Saulpaw said, adding the organization is a nonprofit. “As these individuals go through sober living … the ones who make it are productive members of society, and it’s less costly to the community.”

Meet South Orange County’s CUSD Candidates

ix candidates are running for three seats on the Capistrano Unified School District’s Board of Trustees in Areas 1, 2 and 3, which cover schools in South Orange County. Each area has two candidates vying for a seat, and in Area 3, both candidates are newcomers, as incumbent John Alpay is running for a seat on the South Orange County Community College District Board of Trustees.

There is also a fourth seat up for election in Trustee Area 5, which covers schools in Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel.

Incumbent Gary Pritchard is running against three candidates: Jorge Velastegui, Monica Maddox and Jake Vollebregt.

The San Clemente Times asked the six candidates running in Areas 1, 2 and 3 to submit a statement on who they are

and why they’re running for a seat on the CUSD Board of Trustees. Candidates’ responses are listed below in the same order that they’ll appear on the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

Additionally, the CUSD Board of Trustees voted in August to call a school bond election within the newly formed School Facilities Improvement District #2, which encompasses the entire district except for Rancho Mission Viejo. If 55 percent of voters approve the $889 million general obligation bond measure on Nov. 8, residents living within SFID #2 will be taxed $43 for every $100,000 of assessed value on their homes to help the district leverage state funds to pay for over $800 million in deferred facilities maintenance.

Our school board must be a better steward of our tax dollars and earn community trust.

I will insist on clear, detailed reporting of spending and look for reasonable ways to save money and redirect funds back to our kids. No family should be asked to subsidize the school district unless all other means of funding have been explored.

I have been a small business owner for 20 years, specializing in software development. I design solutions to complex problems within tight budgets. Gould Workman, Sales Manager I have worked the past 22 years as a project manager and sales manager. I have learned to value “the team,” lead by example and effectively plan and communicate. As a father of five children in our district, and the husband to an amazing wife and CUSD teacher, I want to continue taking an active role in the improvement of our local education system. Unfortunately, many in our community are outraged by the dismissive treatment of the current school board. It is my resolute commitment to listen to and represent all members of the community and allow their voices to be reflected in the decisions the board makes. Jim Reardon, Incumbent, Business Owner/Engineer As the school board vice president, I am able to see past the rhetoric of educational insiders to protect our students and schools. I favor classroom reform, school choice, local control, program innovation and fair taxation. I represent the communities of Ladera Ranch, Las Flores, Wagon Wheel, Coto de Caza, Trabuco, eastern San Juan Capistrano, Sendero and Esencia, most of which pay Mello-Roos taxes that supported new school construction.

In 2012, I promised never to vote for a tax increase. I vigorously oppose CUSD’s $889 million bond, Measure M, on the November ballot that will triple-tax Mello-Roos areas. It unfairly burdens younger communities. I will guard against abuse of this enormous $1.8 billion local tax if it should pass. I recommend a “no” vote.

Since 2013, as a board member I have

championed fairness in management of Mello-Roos tax districts. This has produced tax reductions of $81 million, while ensuring that CUSD’s credit rating remains solid.

I will continue work to open new schools to serve Esencia and surrounding areas on time.

These projects, as well as expansion of San Juan Hills High School are underway, and their funding is unaffected by Measure M. I am a parent, computer engineer, active business owner and founder of a successful nonprofit school serving 6-12 grade students with autism. I seek to raise quality of education for all students including those with disabilities, and increase enrichment, vocational and sports opportunities in our schools.

I am proud of my reputation as the most accessible and responsive member of our school board. The duty of a member to help families to work with our enormous organization to resolve individual problems for students is one I take most seriously.

I’ve raised funds for our nonprofits including Casa Romantica and the Marine Monument. I’m running to represent San Clemente on the school board so I can work to strengthen our schools, build trust between our community and CUSD, and be a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars. During the past five years, Jodi Powell has been developing Special Fishies, a program through the city of San Clemente.

We just stopped by the Burger Stop for our last double cheese and cheese burger, as this icon will be permanently closed on Sept. 1 after a 34-year run. With a ready smile and uncommon efficiency, ownercook-server Nayer Henderson has met our burger, chili dog, fries, onion rings, etc. needs, without fail, seven days a week for all these years.

Cooked to order with fresh ingredients, the independent “mom and pop” Burger Stop supplied our fast food at affordable prices in an open air eating experience.

As we look up at the mass of freeway concrete replacing it, we wonder about the cost of “progress.” Life in San Clemente is diminished by the closure of this treasured eatery—another successful small business sacrificed to “progress.” Its loss, even with its mid-century American architecture style, tears away a piece of our “Spanish Village by the Sea.” We wish to sincerely thank Nayer and her crew for what they have provided to San Clemente and wish them the best in the future.

This is in response to the letter by Sandra Weaver in the Sept. 1-7 issue of the San Clemente Times. Although Ms. Weaver considers herself to be an unbiased independent, her letter reads like a strongly biased hit piece coming from a Democratic point of view. She states that Donald Trump has made “outrageous claims” and “ridiculous promises,” yet does not specify which of his claims or promises she finds to be outrageous or ridiculous. Is it the idea of returning to the rule of law with regard to immigration?

Is it the idea that we should re-negotiate our far-too-generous trade treaties that have driven virtually all our manufacturing jobs off-shore? Is it the idea of bringing

our tax policy into line with competing nations in order to attract our rich corporations back home where we can tax them? Is it the idea of taking decisive action against terrorist armies that daily slaughter countless innocent people and openly threaten us with the same? Is it the idea of replacing Obamacare, which is so obviously flawed (only the government could come up with insurance that you only have to buy when you need it), with something that might actually work?

I could go on, but which of just these few, Ms. Weaver, do you find to be outrageous or ridiculous? What really concerns me is that far too many voters seem to find common-sense ideas to be outrageous or ridiculous. How has our societal thought process become so distorted?

What clearly is outrageous and ridiculous is that our next president may very well be a virtual criminal and proven serial liar who has made it painfully evident that she cannot even be entrusted with sensitive information, let alone with acting as Commander-in-Chief and setting the course for our nation. That, Ms. Weaver, is something that is quite plainly on its face both outrageous and ridiculous. Yet we as a society do not seem to recognize this. We now contemplate a choice between a strong leader with a proven record of success in the business world (Cont. on page 12) www.sanclementetimes.com

SOAPBOX (Cont. from page 11) and with rock-solid ideas that definitely address our most important problems versus a career politician with a long history of operating at the edge of the law and repeatedly lying to us; who is owned by her donor corporations; has no significant accomplishments other than maneuvering herself into high government positions and; in the face of impending disasters on many fronts, offers no significant new policy ideas. This should be a no-brainer, and yet we are on the brink of getting it wrong. What has happened to us?

Ms. Weaver goes on to fault Donald Trump for being egotistical, vulgar and rude. I totally agree. Score three points for Hillary. However, I think it is becoming increasingly important that Americans stop taking the media’s bait and seeing elections as sporting events or popularity contests. Now more than ever, we must begin realizing that an election needs to be a contest of ideas. When we vote based on political skill or likeability without clearly contrasting the ideas of the candidates, either we get lucky or there will be a price to pay; and it will be paid mostly by our descendants. As our current president once crowed to us, “elections have consequences.”

Ahoy from the USS Bonhomme Richard! Your Magnificent Bastards have sailed from Okinawa and embarked on the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit’s (MEU) annual fall patrol. The three ships in the fall patrol’s Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) are the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6), the USS Green Bay (LPD-20), and the USS Germantown (LSD-48). Our Marines have manned positions on each of these ships and are ready to respond to a wide range of military operations at a moment’s notice. With full integration in the 31st MEU’s Amphibious Ready Group, we are now the primary crisis response team in the Asia-Pacific region.

I am proud to relay that during the month of August, we were able to promote 36 Marines. The promotions included one Private First Class, three Lance Corporals, 18 Lance Corporals, 12 sergeants and two gunnery sergeants. We will continue to reward excellence during our busy deployment schedule.

At sea, we have already completed our Amphibious Integration Training (AIT), which integrated all the Marines in the MEU with our Navy counterparts through exercises that included staff planning, an airfield seizure via helicopters, Assault Amphibious Vehicle (AAV) sea maneuvers and multiple alert drills. The Marines and Sailors have already cultivated a cohesive working relationship that I expect to continue to grow during the remainder Page 12

of the fall patrol. For the next few weeks, the Marines and Sailors of the 31st MEU will continue to rehearse their amphibious operations skills and will conduct a certification exercise to confirm our proficiency of operating at the MEU level within the ARG. This is an answer to Jamie Deans of Sovereign Health. I just read your article in the paper about being good neighbors.

I live behind one of your houses on Calle Toledo. The sober living house backs up to my backyard; Jamie Deans ought to live near one of his houses and see if he could be a good neighbor. Our homes and yards are filled with cigarette smoke, they wake us up at night with their foul language. I listen to their screaming and yelling and swear words in the evening sometimes until 11 p.m. or later. If you walk by the house in the daytime you have to hear “F”ing everything, while residents stand screaming outside about how they are being treated. This is way beyond trying to be a good neighbor. I am a recovering alcoholic and have been sober for 45 years.

I do understand the disease, but these residents are extremely violent, ill people, and we are subjected to their behavior on a daily basis, which has turned into years with this house.

First off, I’d like to thank the San Clemente community for welcoming the world’s best surfers once again. We understand Lower Trestles is a special place, and we very much appreciate the town opening its arms to us each season.

Lowers is undoubtedly one of the most high-performance waves on the planet—providing the ideal canvas for top surfers to push the boundaries of surfing in the live arena. The 2016 Samsung Galaxy World Surfing League Women’s Championship Tour season has been one for the record books and Trestles will be a pivotal event for this year’s battle for the throne.

Australia’s Tyler Wright leads the WSL Top 17 into the Swatch Women’s Pro, followed closely by Southern California’s Courtney Conlogue and reigning three-time WSL Women’s Champion Carissa Moore. Joining the world’s best female surfers this week will be wildcard Bethany Hamilton, who wowed everyone during June’s Fiji Pro with an equal third place finish.

We have a great-looking forecast for this year’s event and anticipation is high to see what the world’s best do when they hit the water.

It’s fantastic to be back in San Clemente, a venue that has hosted the world’s best surfers on the elite World Surfing League Championship Tour since 2000. The wave is one of the most rippable on the planet and the town’s hospitality is world-class. The WSL Top 34 eagerly look forward to this event every year.

We’ve seen an unbelievable shift amongst the elite-level surfers this season with John John Florence, Matt Wilkinson and Gabriel Medina holding down the top spots heading into this week’s Hurley Pro at Trestles. Sporting icons like Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater continue to wow at spots like Jeffreys Bay and Tahiti and the rest of the field has shown moments of brilliance throughout the season.

San Clemente has long produced world-class talents and I’m sure the town will turn out in force to support current No. 11 Kolohe Andino, who kicked off the season with a Runner-Up finish on the Gold Coast and is coming off a fifth in Tahiti last month.

We have a great-looking forecast for an early start and look forward to seeing everyone come down to the beach to enjoy the world’s best surfers.

PANHE San Onofre State Beach is arguably the best protected park in the world.

Bordered to the north by vast Orange County development, the state park lies on the federally-owned lands of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton—a shield that provides visitors an exceptional glimpse of Southern California’s coastline virtually unaffected by man. With the safeguard of Marine forces and scientists, California State Parks and a dedicated community of

volunteers, there is a legacy of cooperation to preserve the culturally-significant land.

From native inhabitants and missionaries to rancheros, Marines and surfing legends, San Onofre has a vibrant past.

The San Mateo Valley, home of the state park, has been inhabited by the region’s native peoples, the Acjachemen, for approximately 9,000 years. Many Acjacheman descendants trace their lineage back to Panhe, an ancient village and burial site, now home

to the San Mateo Campgrounds. With an estimated 250 inhabitants, Panhe, meaning “place by the water,” was among the largest villages in the Acjachemen territory that today would have extended from northern San Diego County, along Orange County’s central coast and inland to the Santa Ana Mountains.

These native people are celebrated each spring at a San Onofre Parks Foundationhosted Panhe celebration.

In July 1769, an expeditionary force led by Spaniard Gaspar de Portola arrived at what is now Camp Pendleton. It was here the first interaction between explorers, missionaries and tribespeople took place and also where the first baptism in California was performed. Panhe’s population dwindled soon after Spanish arrival as many native inhabitants, given the name Juaneños by the Spanish, were relocated to construct Mission San Juan Capistrano.

Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule in 1821 would bring new rule to the region.

Lands throughout Southern California were soon divided between powerful men and families, giving way to the region’s rancho system. For more than 100 years, the lands played a pivotal role in a thriving cattle commerce until acquired by the government in the early 1940s. Camp Pendleton was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in September 1942.

Onofre State Beach was created on Aug. 31, 1971. Today, the park is leased from the Department of Navy—a 50-year lease that expires in just five years. It is a partnership, Steve Long, 30-year state parks employee and founder of San Onofre Parks Foundation, is confident will continue for years to come.

“The Marines, effectively, when they acquired the land created this wilderness coast,” Long said. “Without the establishment of the Marine Corps base, there would have been homes from San Clemente to Oceanside. They have done a great job of preserving this land that is shared with the public.”

Starting at the Santa Ana Mountains’ edge, the park’s topography changes from canyons, prairies and wetlands to coastal cliffs with sandy beaches. The diverse countryside provides a safe haven for 10 federally threatened and endangered species— among them the Pacific pocket mouse, southwestern willow flycatcher and San Diego fairy shrimp—and is home to more than 200 plant and 100 bird species as well as numerous terrestrial mammals.

While San Onofre State Beach welcomes an estimated 2.5 million visitors a year—ranking it among the top five visited of California’s 278 state parks—it remains an unspoiled natural setting protected from human development, protected by the government and community organizations and cherished by its visitors.

Eyes across the globe will soon turn to Lower Trestles.

One of five breaks along the San Onofre State Beach shore, Trestles draws thousands each year for the Hurley Pro and Swatch Women’s Pro. San Onofre is among the most frequented parks in California’s outdoor portfolio, but its more than 2 million annual visitors ensure it remains undamaged for those who follow.

Here’s how you can help event organizers, faithful volunteers and state park’s employees keep San Onofre’s unique ecosystem pristine and healthy for the mountain bikers, hikers, surfers, campers, sunset seekers and wild inhabitants.

Do not cross the railroad tracks. This action is not only dangerous, it’s illegal. Railroad tracks are private property. Therefore, crossing them is considered trespassing. With Trestles inaccessible to vehicles, prepare for a beach trek through untouched desert wildlands.

Bring water and enjoy the hike. Take in San O. Leave no mark. Aside from human visitors, San Onofre is home to endangered wildlife and hundreds of plant and animal species. Keep it clean for all. Mainly, pick up trash—even if it isn’t yours. Also, keep stickers off park signs and buildings. Try to leave the park a little better than when you arrived.

No hang ups. Wetsuits, towels and boards should not be placed on natural vegetation or trashcans.

Avoid the wetlands. Be aware of the impacts—both negative and positive—you have on the surrounding environment. Entering the wetlands can greatly damage the delicate environment that provides food and shelter for the region’s native plant and animal life.

Wetlands are also home to dangerous wildlife. It’s best to stay out.

Soak it all in. Take pause from the surf action and revel in San Onofre State Beach’s beauty and stillness.

A Surfer’s Paradise A look back at the early years of surf at Trestles and San Onofre

A surfer’s haven for nearly a century, San Onofre State Beach’s famed breaks from Uppers to Lowers continue to draw World Title frontrunners, amateurs and boarders of all ages to surf some of California’s most consistent, high-performance waves. As the World Surf League’s top contenders hit Lowers for the Swatch Women’s Pro and Hurley Pro, we take a look back in time at Trestles’ surf origins.

1920s & 1930s: Southern California’s nomadic surfers would stumble upon the obscure, cobblestone point-break while in search of new waves and challenges. While no one can say for certain who rode the first Trestles surf, the eccentric Laguna Beach boardmaker George “Peanuts” Larson; pioneering surfer of Oahu’s North Shore, Lorrin “Whitey” Harrison, and darling of the California surf scene, Mary Ann Hawkins, are known early riders. By the mid ’30s, the ’Nofre news was out. Situated on the Santa Margarita Ranch, the beachside sanctuary was once a popular angler’s camp.

As the decade progressed, fisherman became few and the number of surfers steadily rose.

A consistent wave, constant beach fire and streams of camping surfers made San Onofre the idyllic locale to live out the surfing lifestyle.

The call to service along with gas rationing, a high cost of materials and barring of civilians on the beach briefly put the San O surfing life on hiatus. With the ranch’s federal acquisition in the early ’40s, the lands became home to the U.S. Marine Corps’ largest training base, Camp Pendleton.

The post-war ’40s would see surfing return to San Onofre as various commanding officers overlooked the civilian beach ban. As the surf population again increased, so too did military concerns of unregulated access and beach cleanliness.

1950s: San O’s long-standing tradition of military-civilian cooperation was born in 1951 with the San Onofre Surfing Club’s establishment. Founded by two longtime San O surfers, San Clemente dentist A.H. Barney Wilkes and first SOSC president Andre “Frenchy” Jahan, the club was given exclusive beach access— under the agreement the club would maintain membership as well as beach sanitation and order while the Marines had a gate for controlled access and required membership cards and windshield decals. The mid ’50s brought friction between the military and surfers that would be resolved by the decade’s end.

1960s & 1970s: By the ’60s, the beloved, laidback, family-style break was an engrained surf-world icon. Its notoriety would only grow as the decade passed and sport popularity increased. The beach park was eventually leased to the California State Parks system and opened to the public in 1971. Legendary surfer Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz, who left his successful medical practice to pursue a utopian dream, founded a surf school at ‘Nofre in the mid ’70s, and 1977 would see Michael Ho crowned winner of the first-held civilian surf contest at Trestles.

The four decades since have seen world-class competition and cutting-edge surfers tackle the magic break.

Snapped the day before, Hurley’s lead production artist, Josh Grelock, cultivates the collection. Action shots and sceneries, athletes and landmarks, the photos are Trestles—expertly captured by Hurley’s line of photographers as the break battle rages on. The Lowers snapshots are more than a gallery.

These artistic renderings of Lower Trestles play a role in its preservation.

All prints are up for grabs with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the San Onofre Parks Foundation—the nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational programs and interpretive services

for San Onofre and San Clemente state beaches. These sales assist the foundation’s efforts to enhance visitor park experience, promote environmental awareness and preserve the park’s cultural and natural resources.

The benefactor will remain the same, but this year’s photo wall will see a change. Gone is the black backdrop of year’s past, rolling in is a wave of color. Riding the vibrant groundswell is Los Angeles’ pioneering graffiti legend Kelly Graval, a.k.a. RISK, who also designed the Hurley Pro athlete trophies.

Plenty of waves are lining up through the first week of the event window, courtesy of an impressive run of storm activity in the South Pacific last week. The aforementioned area of low pressure moved out from under New Zealand and took a reasonably favorable track through the Southwest Pacific toting satellite derived wind speeds 40-50kts+ and seas in excess of 35’. That offers building SW/SSW swell through the first couple days of the event’s waiting period, with the most size on offer Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning. Size is running in the chest-head high+ range then, with occasional overhead+ peaks for Friday and Saturday.

Days after the competition’s end, the foundation will host the last of its Summer Lecture Series titled “Surfing USA” the San Onofre Influence on Surf Culture ON SEPT. 21. Speaker Steve Pezman, publisher and editor of the world-acclaimed The Surfer’s Journal will bring his fascinating storytelling to the Historic Cottage at San Clemente State Beach Campground, located at 225 Avenida Calafia. Tickets are $15. A reception and gallery exhibit viewing begins at 5:30 p.m. with the lecture held at 7 p.m.

Heading into early next week we’ll be watching for some reinforcing SSW/S swell, thanks to a closer fetch moving through the Central South Pacific over the holiday weekend. Size will be down a notch overall, but be plenty contestable through Wednesday of next week before that swell starts to ease. Winds are looking generally favorable for the mornings, though we’ll be monitoring the potential for light SE flow on Thursday. At this point, we anticipate afternoon winds will be lightest Wednesday and Thursday, with light to moderate Westerly flow returning for the afternoon on Friday.

SWATCH WOMEN’S PRO Trestles is prime for a throw down.

Year three of Women’s Championship Tour (CT) competition at Lowers will see fire in the water as the world’s top 17 surfers battle it out on the homegrown favorite, cobblestone break.

Entering Trestles with three firstplaces finishes under her belt, Tyler Wright has dominated the season to best the field and lead the World Title race. The 22-year-old Australian burst onto the Championship Tour at just 14 and has consistently shown her prowess—finishing in the Top 5 season after season.

Wright’s passage to victory hasn’t

been stamped, and will likely not be traveled with ease, as Courtney Conlogue and 2015 Swatch Pro and CT victor Carissa Moore are on the hunt. A Trestles win for the firstever Swatch Pro champ Stephanie Gilmore could propel the six-time CT champion into title contention.

This year’s field is staked with contenders. Tatiana Weston-Webb, Sally Fitzgibbons, Johanne Defay and Malia Manuel are all on the title fray and the CT’s final four stops are sure to produce epic heats and leaderboard switches.

At Trestles, Lakey Peterson could see sparks on the break she per-

formed the first-ever women’s aerial maneuver in competition. Coming back from a preseason ankle injury and third-place finish at the Vans US Open of Surfing, Peterson is looking sharp entering Lowers.

Keep an eye on back-to-back Swatch Pro wildcard entry Bethany Hamilton. She could take down some big names. In her third-place finish at June’s Fiji Women’s Pro, Hamilton topped Wright before dropping to contest champ Defay in the quarterfinals.

BOARD T. Patterson, Mayhem shape for Lowers pros Cottons, Uppers, Lowers, Middles, Church. Five breaks, one surf spot: Trestles.

From the long, sloping lefts of Cottons to the steep rights of Lowers, the breaks of San Onofre State Beach are as varied as the boards used to ride their waves. A long, middle or shortboard will do at the expert-level Cottons, but the ever-consistent Lowers is all shortboard, all the time.

To get the inside scoop on Lower Trestles whips, SC Times contributor Erin Hawkins sat down with, and watched in shaping action, local craftsmen Timmy Patterson of T. Patterson Surfboards and Matt “Mayhem” Biolos of Lost Surfboards to discuss surf, San Clemente and the boards the world’s top contenders are battling it out on at this year’s Hurley Pro and Swatch Women’s Pro. ROOTS RUN DEEP Encircled in the surfing industry since he was a kid, Patterson learned the basics of shaping from his father, Ronald. Patterson shaped his first board in 1978 and, some 40 years later, continues to originate and transform designs with the same passion of his youth.

The early ’60s brough the Patterson brothers— Bobby “The Flea,” Ronald and Raymond—from Hawaii to California. Skilled surfers and shapers, the trio naturally landed in Dana Point working in Hobie Alter’s high-tech manufacturing facility for the innovative Hobie Surfboards.

With his father and uncle at the epicenter of one of Southern California’s original surfing groups, the Windansea Surf Club, Patterson grew up surrounded by pioneers of both shape and sport. He, too, would work at Hobie

before branching out to open an in-house glass shop with friends. The year was 1995—a milestone marked on Patterson’s website with an image of a 20-year-old piece of paper, crumbled but legible, with Patterson’s vision for high-quality, hand-finished boards.

Two decades later, Patterson is preserving the “stoke” in his shaping process. The fun of surfboard shaping, he says, is in trying all the flavors of his designs.

“It’s weird to be able to wake up in the middle of the night and drive a couple miles away to my shop. It doesn’t matter what time of night, I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I gotta go do it,’” Patterson said of the designs he’ll shape into the wee hours and take for a ride the next day.

(Continued) encounter he tries to get in the customer’s head to figure out what kind of board they not only like, but need.

“You get to be real creative all the time, it’s not stagnant at all,” he said. “For me as a shaper, it’s always a challenge to create everything under the sun.”

Patterson’s ingenuity is continually put to the test by professional clients. Today, he’s working with and shaping for Brazilian pro Italo Ferreira, currently the ninth-ranked surfer on the World Surf League Men’s Championship Tour. Ferreira will be riding his own model on Lowers’ long, steep right waves—a model he and Patterson have collectively designed over the last few years.

This collaborative process with pros and surfing diehards has helped Patterson develop his craft.

“My biggest influence on shaping and changing the way I shape, dialing in what we do … was Pat O’Connell by far,” Patterson said. At the height of O’Connell’s career, he and Patterson had a give-and-take relationship that elevated the surfer’s sport and shaper’s skill.

While Patterson’s designs are ever evolving, he had stayed committed to his original vision.

“We’ve really stuck to our guns,” Patterson said. “There’s such a heavy influence of how we do surfboards in San Clemente, just from our culture that we’ve got to create with the community.”

wide. It’s a brand, founder Matt “Mayhem” Biolos says represents “the every man.”

“Everyone is a little bit lost,” he said. “Kind of like a tongue-in-cheek attitude; we don’t care, we just have fun.”

Even with a global presence—taking Lost Surfboards to surfers from the United States, Brazil, Indonesia and Australia— Biolos and his business partners oversee all aspects of the international, privatelyowned surf, skate and clothing brand. Lost is a brand Biolos has held true to for nearly 30 years, having fun and keeping the heart of the brand at home, right here in San Clemente.

Biolos shaped his first board in June 1987.

Sanding boards for Surfglass and Herbie Fletcher, he made his first board—dubbed a “Ratz Ass.” The name of his second board, “Mayhem,” stuck.

It’s a moniker he’s gone by ever since.

Biolos went on to found Lost Surfboards in the early ’90s—the date itself is a little lost, maybe it was 1991, maybe ’93. Whatever the year, the brand has today—in a sense— found itself among the most recognizable, respected brands in the world.

Local and international surfing superstars—and those on the rise—represent the Lost brand, riding in victory after victory on boards shaped by Biolos and his team.

Last year, Carissa Moore surfed to a Swatch Women’s Pro title on a Lost “Driver.”

The board, distinctive for its long, through the middle of the board straight rocker that lifts to a healthy nose rocker, is also a Championship Tour favorite of San Clementenative Kolohe Andino.

ROUND NO. 1 MATCHUPS

As the Top 34 surfers descend on Lowers, one thing is certain: The World Title race is far from over.

Two-and three-seeded Matt Wilkinson and Gabriel Medina aren’t far behind leader John John Florence’s 39,000 points—trailing the yellow jersey by less than 4,000 points.

And while the nearest point earner, No. 4 Adrian Buchan, sits some 8,000 points behind Medina’s 37,500, the title is still too close to call.

Just four Championship Tour (CT) stops remain and the battle is heating up.

So too is six-time Hurley Pro champ Kelly Slater. Slater had a rough start to the 2016 season with two 25th-place finishes and a missed Rio tour stop in May. Entering Lowers with

a hot-streak of top finishes, Slater is looking to ride his Billabong Tahiti Pro win in August to again best the Trestles field.

In Tahiti, Slater topped Florence in an epic battle of forces to notch his first CT victory since 2013. If history has anything to say about it, Lowers could be Slater’s for the taking. But, an experienced field of past victors and lineup of locals, who call the break home, are also vying for the Trestles crown.

Defending champ Mick Fanning, a three-time World Title holder, will face Brazil’s Jason Andre and the runaway leader he caught in 2013 to capture his third title, Joel Parkinson, in round one competition. Also chasing the crown again is 2014 Trestles champion Jordy Smith.

On the local front, San Clemente natives Kolohe Andino and wildcard entry Tanner Gudauskas could be break outs.

The 22-year-old Andino rode a dominant wave of Trestles wins throughout his amateur days but hasn’t made it past round three since his rookie CT season—two of those losses were to Hurley Pro winners: Taj Burrow in 2013 and Fanning in 2015. For the wildcard Gudauskas, there may be magic in the water. As a wildcard in 2014, Gudauskas beat out Wilkinson and Slater in a tough round-one matchup for a quick advance to round three where he fell to Slater 13.84 to 14.17.

Gudauskas, Simpson draw Hurley Pro wildcards

Each year, professional surfers battle it out on the world’s best waves in the World Surf League’s Championship Tour (CT)—an international series of 11 elite surfing events. The Hurley Pro, kicking off this week, will be stop No. 8 on the 2016 world tour with seasoned locals and top pros competing to take glory at one of two United States destinations on the tour, San Clemente’s famed Lower Trestles.

Two Southern California natives, Tanner Gudauskas and Brett Simpson, earned Hurley Pro wildcard entries, after prevailing against a stacked Hurley Pro Trials lineup at T-Street Beach south of San Clemente Pier this July. The trials, consisting of 24 surfers, were divided into two groups—Hurley team riders and local San Clemente pros. Each group crowned one victor with a Trestles appearance.

Gudauskas, 27, the youngest of San Clemente’s native Gudauskas brothers—Patrick, Dane and Tanner—is currently ranked No. 23 on the 2016 Men’s Qualifying Series (QS). To snag the wildcard, he went head-to-head with big brother Patrick, currently ranked No. 11 on the QS. Gudauskas also beat out last year’s wildcard winner Ian Crane along with Griffin Colapinto, Nate Yeomans and Evan Geiselman.

Tanner and his brothers are well-known in both the surfing world and the San Clemente community—not only for their stellar surfing, but also for their Positive Vibe Warriors Foundation and annual community-based, always-agood-time “STOKE-O-RAMA” surf event for entry-level surfers under age 12.

Now, through the PVW Foundation, the Gudauskas’ are continuing to spread positiv-

ity and good vibes by raising funds to support community-level youth water safety and ocean education programs.

For the Hurley team, Simpson, the Huntington Beach native currently ranked No. 17 on the North American QS and No. 73 on the overall QS, beat out fellow Hurley riders Rob Machado, Jake Marshall and Yadin Nicol during his trials performance.

A former two-time Vans US Open of Surfing champion in 2009 and 2010, Simpson is slowly regaining career momentum after taking the wildcard win at the Hurley Pro Trials and representing Team USA at the 2016 International Surfing Association World Surfing Games in Playa Jaco, Costa Rica.

With a Hurley Pro appearance, both wildcard winners will not only have the chance to compete against top CT surfers but can also further advance their 2016 QS campaigns.

At the Movies: ‘The Light Between Oceans’ is a Bit Dim

T

he summer movie season is over, and the autumn film festival circuit is just beginning.

One of the first movies to debut this season is Derek Cianfrance’s first official studio film, The Light Between Oceans. Based on the 2012 novel by M.L. Stedman, the movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival to a lukewarm reception, and general audiences might feel the same way.

In 1918 Australia, Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) returns from World War I alone and emotionally numb. He is hired as the new lighthouse keeper off the coast, where he meets Isabel Graysmark (Alicia Vikander). Quickly, they fall in love, get married and move into a house next to the lighthouse. After Isabel experiences two miscarriages, a baby, Lucy, washes to shore in a boat and the couple decides to raise her as their own. Only years later, Tom discovers Lucy’s mother Hannah Potts (Rachel Weisz) actually lives in their town.

The Light Between Oceans had a lot of potential and might have been a moderate hit a few decades ago. It has that soapy sentiment you see in movies like Peyton Place (1957) or Endless Love (1981). But while Cianfrance perfected the depressing tone of romance in Blue Valentine (2010), he somehow misses the mark here.

The dramatic music score by Alexandre Desplat alongside a stoic Fassbender and weepy performances from Vikander and Weisz make the feature overly melodramatic. Unless you’re a huge fan of the filmmaker or cast, you could wait for Sully at the movies. SC www.sanclementetimes.com

The take on adobada at La Tiendita is slightly sweet and spicy, with a thick rub of spice and extra tender meat. What makes it exceptional is the addition of warm spices like cinnamon, and what could be the phantom associations of nutmeg and clove. It’s almost like the meet is marinated in horchata.

The tostada is piled high, with abundant meat, fresh lettuce and tomato, cheese, sour cream and guacamole. Here’s to hoping these show up on every corner. —Matt Cortina

t would be appear to be a convoluted route that merged and mashed up Def Leppard, Stone Temple Pilots, TLC and the Pope into a band. But Phil Collen (lead guitarist of Def Leppard) says the marriage began at a logical start: a wedding.

“She’s my wife’s godmother, and she sung at our wedding,” Collen said of Debbi Blackwell-Cook, who has lead a Motown group, sung backup vocals for Michael Buble and, yes, performed for the Pope.

Collen says he and Blackwell-Cook soon found their musical styles matched, and out come a deep bluesy sound. The later editions of Robert De Leo (Stone Temple Pilots) on bass, and Forrest Robinson (TLC, India Arie) on drums rounded out Delta Deep, who will be performing at the Coach House on Monday, Sept. 12.

“They just kind of completed the whole thing,” he said. “It went form this very bluesy soulful thing to this aggressive, soul-funk, bluesy thing.”

Collen said merging the varied backgrounds is helped by the members’ shared appreciation of Motown and solid songwriting. In fact, Collen said adhering to rules in the studio has provided a vehicle through which the members combine their talents.

“The two things you have to do with a song is respect the groove and the melody. It’s amazing how many people veer off and get caught up in themselves and something else comes in. I think that’s a problem, a lot of us love those boundaries,” Collen said.

Women Face Dating Challenges

I

n my most recent column, I featured Brenda, a widow, 68, who had soured on men and the overall dating scene for women age 60-plus.

In the article, I suggested she soften her opinion regarding the single men she is meeting, which brought some eye-opening responses from single women.

Joan said, “Your advice is generally very helpful but you can’t possibly see the reality of the dating world from the eyes of a 68-year-old woman. I am generally an optimist as well as I love men.

“However, I am also a realist, and what I have concluded is that finding a decent compatible man over 65 is a case of a needle in a haystack. I haven’t given up yet at 67 but my eyes are seeing more clearly what the truth is.”

Joan is right. I cannot see the world through the eyes of a 68-year-old woman. Nor through the eyes of any single man ON LIFE AND or woman who has lost LOVE AFTER 50 a spouse or a loved one

An email from Ann, 70, described the dating challenges she faces.

Ann said, “I was widowed eight years ago. After about a year, I decided that I could lessen my grief if I had a male friend. I decided to try a couple of online dating sites. I found the men to be rude.

One widower said his wife had received a prestigious award from the governor. Was I of that caliber?

“Another man made himself available for conversing only at 6 a.m. His ‘story’ was that he was married, but his wife was disabled. He asked in his emails, ‘Do you dye your hair?’ Do you wear a lot of makeup?’

“I did go out with one man who was very nice, but married. Obviously, I ended that.”

Ann stated she did volunteer work, took master gardening classes and joined a gardening group, but not one available man showed an interest in her at these events.

She added, “I admit I am an introvert, but I have accepted that in myself, and like that about myself, and a man would have to accept that in me as well.

“I have limited my social activities now.

I walk my dog in the park often, and I see men my age there walking their dogs or just walking for exercise. I’m sure some of them are married, but some of them must be single. I smile at everyone I walk near, but only one man has stopped to talk briefly.

“I am not looking for a man with money to support me. I also am not looking for a husband. I am looking for a friend, a man to be friendly and nonjudgmental.

“Tom, don’t advise me to get out more and be more outgoing. I am who I am.

Realize that women my age do not want to spend all their time knitting and making casseroles for church potlucks. We still want a relationship, and we still want sex.

The ‘invisible woman syndrome’ is not a myth. It is a very painful reality.”

I empathize with Joan and Ann and the dating challenges they face as mature women.

GIRLS TENNIS

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY The San Clemente boys cross country team graduated its largest senior class in school history this offseason, which has allowed a large group of freshman and sophomores to step into contributing roles early in the season.

Head coach Dan Johnson said that four of his top-seven runners are currently freshmen and sophomores.

Not all of the Tritons depth from last season graduated, however. Senior Carlos De Jesus, who was among the team’s top runners last season, returns. Johnson said De Jesus has been setting the tone for the young Tritons squad in the offseason, and is already posting three-mile times in the low 16-minute mark.

“He’s got a motor like I’ve never seen before,” Johnson said of De Jesus. “Whatever you throw at him, he just does it and does it twice as much as you would expect.”

Sophomores Elijah Sech and Harry McKnee, along with freshmen Conrad Cullins and Zach Miller, are positioning themselves to be in the Tritons’ top-7.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY The San Clemente girls cross country team will enter the new season with a handful of strong runners that will anchor the group and pick up valuable points. The Tritons return their top runner from last season, junior Chandler Horton, as well as returners Amy Vollebregt and Christina Beaulieu. The Tritons’ top trio became a top quartet this offseason, as freshman Belle Sachse impressed in summer workouts and has already broken into the team’s top-4 pack.

The Tritons top group of 15 runners made a point of staying busy this offseason, according to coach Dave Proodian.

The top runners competed in multiple 5Ks in the area, and went to Mammoth for a summer training camp, which Proodian says has them in good shape to start the season.

The offseason improvement bodes well for San Clemente, which will not compete in the South Coast League for the first time in 10 years. As part of an offseason league realignment, the Tritons were moved to the Sea View League. While the South Coast League features some of the top teams in the area, Proodian still expects the Sea View to provide a stiff test.

“It will be interesting to see how we do (in league). It’s not going to be a walk in the park by any means. Every team has two or three good runners,” Proodian said.

“I think anyone has a shot at going No. 1 (in league).”

wanting to end the tradition of the two teams battling it out on the court, Tritons’ coach Tom Beard scheduled his team to play the Dolphins in the season opener.

The crowds showed up to watch and the atmosphere was electric.

Dana Hills got the better of San Clemente and swept them in three games.

Although they lost the match, Beard believes it was a great chance for the young Tritons team, which returns just six players, to learn how to deal with adversity.

“The (Dana Hills) crowd came out and they were barking in their ears. It was like an important league game or even a CIF game,” Beard said of the Dana Hills match. “It was the first time for some of our girls to experience that from the floor.

They didn’t fall apart at any point, and that’s a really good sign.”

The tough opening match will set the tone for the rest of the Tritons’ schedule, which is dotted with top-level opponents in preparation for a run through league. San

Because of league realignments, the Tritons’ longtime rival, Dana Hills, was moved out of the South Coast League. Not

Following the addition of a freshman tournament player and a bevy of experience throughout the roster, the San Clemente girls tennis team is reloading for another successful season.

The Tritons return two of their three singles players from last season, including Lindsay Hung, the reigning South Coast League singles champion. Hung also advanced to the Round of 16 at the CIF-SS Individual Championships as a sophomore. Samantha Neilson, an experienced singles player, also returns. Freshman Jenna Yeam, a young player with tournament experience, has stepped into a starting singles role.

The Tritons are still mixing and matching some players to fill out their doubles rotation, according to head coach John Stephens. But the group will be anchored

by Jasmine Safavieh, a three-year player, Avery McBride and Ariana Safavieh, who are all returning starters.

“It’s pretty easy to mix them up and have them play with different partners because of their personalities and attitudes.

They’re willing to do that,” Stephens said.

San Clemente is already off to a good start in 2016, having picked up wins over Santa Margarita, Capistrano Valley, Tesoro and Huntington Beach. In their three most recent wins, against the Cougars, Titans and Oilers, the Tritons have won 52 of a possible 54 points.

For two consecutive years, the Tritons have split the South Coast League title with rival Dana Hills. With both teams returning experienced rosters, Stephens expects the two to contend for the title for a third straight season.

GIRLS GOLF The San Clemente girls golf team returns a strong core of players that contributed to last year’s league championship-winning effort. The team also enters the season with a new head coach in Marc Parker.

Parker is making the transition from the pool to the links, having served as the Tritons’ head boys water polo coach in year’s past. While the two sports could not be more different, Parker retained all of the www.sanclementetimes.com

SPORTS & OUTDOORS Tritons’ golf assistants from last season and said the transition has been easy.

Leading the way for the Tritons is Olivia French, a returning starter who currently holds a scoring average of 38.

Erica Cornelius and Julia Kalez, along with French, currently make up the Tritons top-3 players.

Both French and Cornelius possess different skill sets, which has led to an effective one-two punch.

“Olivia is very consistent and eliminates big mistakes and stays in control,” Parker said. “Erica has the ability to hit the ball a long distance, which gives her a chance for low scores and puts pressure on the other teams.”

Four freshmen have made it onto the varsity roster, and Parker said the scoring averages across the board are tightly bunched. San Clemente is already posting low cumulative team scores, but lost its first two nonleague matches against Santa

Margarita on Sept. 1 and Sept. 6. San Clemente posted scores of 216 and 208, respectively, in its first two matches, and were narrowly defeated by 11 combined strokes.

BOYS WATER POLO The San Clemente boys water polo team will be under the guidance of a familiar first-year head coach this season. Logan Powell, who has spent the past nine years as an assistant to longtime former coach Marc Parker, takes over the program he

once played for.

Powell, a SCHS grad who also coaches the girls team, will be leading a Tritons team that has a mix of experienced and young players.

Normally there is an adjustment period when a program has a new head coach, but that transition has been eased

by Powell’s presence. Already familiar with the Tritons players and system, Powell was able to hit the ground running during the offseason and instill a new team-oriented approach to the game he believes his players are embracing.

Girls Golf Schedule

Returning players Sean Edwards, Nathan Benge, Joshua Mourer, Brevin Hosea and Parker Mudge give the Tritons plenty of experience at the field positions.

The roster got a boost with the addition of newcomers Jared Powell, Riley Pfieffer and Alex Lunt, a transfer from Capistrano Valley. Goalies Noah Carter and Tre Westbrook are currently splitting time at the position.

In year’s past, the Tritons have relied on a few standout players to help them win games. Powell wants this year’s team to be more rounded and get contributions from up and down the roster. San Clemente has yet to play a game, and will open the season against Los Alamitos on Sept. 8.

“They’re starting to come together more and more as a team and I think that’s going to pay dividends for us,” Powell said. “We had a pretty good summer and I feel like we’re improving. We’re excited for the year.”

Locals Ready to Catch Air at Annual Skateboard Contest SAN CLEMENTE TIMES

S

kateboarders of all ages will carve, flip and grind their way to a spot on the podium at the 17th annual San Clemente Friends of Beaches, Parks and Recreation skateboard tournament at Steed Park on Sept. 10.

The annual contest, which begins at 8 a.m., will feature open divisions for boys and girls ages five to 17. This year, the newly-formed San Clemente Skateboard Coalition has teamed up with the Friends Foundation to help organize the event, and over 130 skaters are expected to compete.

In addition to the age-group divisions, the event will also feature the popular “best trick” contest.

Skateboard vendors will be on-site all day and will be doling out giveaways and prizes. The event will also feature several local food vendors.

Reaves Delivers All-Around Performance in Win Over Huntington Beach

At the start of the football season, San Clemente head coach Jaime Ortiz outlined how Brandon Reaves’ role would expand to both sides of the ball his senior season.

The second the speedy Reaves corralled the opening kickoff against Huntington Beach in the Tritons’ second game of the season on Sept. 2, he showed just how versatile, and dynamic, he can be.

Reaves returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown and didn’t look back from there. He went on to record a rushing touchdown and an interception return for a touchdown as the Tritons breezed their way past the Oilers 38-13 on the road.

Reaves’ touchdown run totaled 55 yards and gave the Tritons (1-1) a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Midway through the third, Reaves picked off Huntington Beach quarterback Nick Welsh and brought it back 20 yards for his third touchdown of the game.

San Clemente quarterback Jack Sears threw touchdown passes to Chase Berman and Keith Jones, and Tristan Trager kicked a 25-yard field goal to close out the scoring for San Clemente.

The Tritons will host Roosevelt out of the Eastern League on Sept. 9. Roosevelt (0-2) has been outscored 84-24 in two games this season.

Girls Golf Loses Close Contests to Eagles

The Tritons’ girls golf team has posted some low scores early in the season, but so far the effort has not translated into wins.

San Clemente (0-2) opened its season with back-to-back matches against Santa Margarita out of the Trinity League. The Eagles defeated the Tritons 210-216 and 203-208 on Sept. 1 and Sept. 6, respectively. The combined margin of victory was a slim 11 strokes.

The Tritons were scheduled to open league play against Aliso Niguel on Sept.

Remembering surf icon Bob Nealy with those who knew him well

n 1973, Bob Nealy altered the trajectory of wave riding. After struggling with the earliest incarnations of the surf leash, which at the time involved a suction cup on the board’s nose, a piece of rubber surgical tubing and a leather wrist strap, Nealy diligently worked toward improving the crude tether. The placement of the leash went from tip to tail, and using the Velcro straps from his old Air Force life preserver and a longer length of urethane cord (so the board wouldn’t violently snap back), Nealy invented the first modern, professionally engineered surf leash. Shortly thereafter, he founded Surfmore and never had to worry about wearing shoes to work again.

Sadly, on Sept. 1, Nealy lost a long and exhaustive battle with lymphoma. His grace and class will be greatly missed throughout the San Clemente community, where he spent most of his life. He leaves his wife, Sara, and daughter behind.

“Nealy was a pioneer in the surf accessory business,” remembered surfing’s first world champion, Peter “PT” Townend.

“I rode for Surfmore leashes in my heyday, appearing in their ads, and Bob was a genuine individual. I was always proud to represent him and the company.”

A pioneer in the industry and lifelong Cotton’s Point and San Onofre local, there was considerably more to Nealy’s act than just spending long days at the beach. In 1959, he began playing water polo at Newport Harbor High School, which eventually led him to a collegiate career at Orange Coast College and then UC Irvine. Blending his passion for the pool and the surf, Nealy started teaching at San Clemente High School in the early ’70s and later at Capo Valley. Never giving up on his passion for water polo, he’d periodically drop by the high schools’ practices and get in the pool with the aspiring young athletes.

“He would get in and play with us and helped out a lot,” recalled Mitch Kahn, who was a student of Nealy’s in the late ’70s and then later went on to represent the United States as a kayaker in the 1992 Olympic Games. “You know, when you’re young, you look at somebody as being a lot older than you, but for the past 15 years or more, we were just really good friends.”

Eventually retiring from the Capistrano Unified School District in 1998, Nealy kept surfing and got back into playing masters water polo.

In 2011, Nealy received the Bryan Weaver Male Master of the Year Award from United States Water Polo (USWP) for his involvement with masters water polo.

He was also inducted into the UC Irvine Hall of Fame for swimming and water polo.

“He cites water polo in giving him a psychological advantage in battling his illness, still being able to do what he loves—play water polo,” noted USWP when honoring Nealy.

“He was a humble man that carried himself with a lot of dignity,” said Kahn, who lived alongside Nealy in the Cypress Shores neighborhood. “I’d see him walking, and no matter how bad things got, he was always positive. He’d say how satisfied he was and what a full life he lived. I don’t know if there are many men that can face what he did with such dignity.”

At the end of August, Nealy made a trip down to La Jolla for the annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational, which benefits UCSD’s Moores Cancer Center.

Even in his weakened state, he managed to find the energy to speak at the podium and share a positive message.

“It was nothing short of inspiring,” said Jim Kempton, a friend and the former editor of Surfer Magazine. “I don’t think anybody but his really close friends knew how serious things were, but that’s not what he talked about. He shared a message of positivity and leadership that I will never forget. He wasn’t the kind of guy that liked to talk much about himself, but he was incredibly intelligent and had a wonderful, quick wit.”

Nealy was a big supporter of the Surfing Heritage and Cultural Center (SHACC), located in San Clemente. In the early days of his leash business, it was SHACC-founder Dick Metz, who at the time was running the Hobie surf shop, that placed one of the first orders for Nealy’s Surfmore leashes.

The relationship between the two men

remained strong, and when it was Nealy’s turn to pay it forward, he did exactly that.

“He was a long-term supporter of SHACC,” said Barry Haun, the foundation’s curator and creative director. “Surfmore XM provided us with leashes to use as membership incentives, plus he gave us leash material for displaying all the surfboards in our showroom. He was always the nicest guy.”

Through it all, Nealy never lost his passion for the water and helping those in his community. With the success of his surf business, he probably didn’t have to keep teaching, but true to who he was, he spent over 30 years giving the youth of San Clemente and Capo Beach a brighter future, and at the end of the day, there really is no better legacy than that. ilynn Baker, 10, has been surfing with her father at local breaks like San Onofre and Doheny State Beach for the last five or six years.

While she competed in her first contest this last June, the Menehune surf contest at Doheny, Rilynn said she likes to surf for the pure fun of the sport and her love of the ocean.

“It’s really fun to just go out there and hang out with other people,” Rilynn said.

She started tandem surfing with her father at 4 years old, and continued the tradition of surfing with her father as she grew older.

“It’s something that we share together; it’s just something to enjoy,” said Tim Baker, Rilynn’s father.

A Dana Point local and longboard surfer, Rilynn enjoys taking off on a wave and practicing different surfing maneuvers.

“Taking off is really fun, and standing up and doing cool moves,” she said, adding that she’s been working on moves like bottom turns and nose rides.

Rilynn said her favorite surf spot is Cove Park in Maui, Hawaii, where she regularly visits her grandparents’ condo and surfs in the mornings with her father and grandfather.

“My dad, grandpa and I go surfing at Cove Park in the morning. The waves are like Doheny,” she said.

In the future, Rilynn hopes to visit and surf the waves in Mexico and Fiji, and maybe even the North Shore in Hawaii.

When asked what surfers she looks up to, Rilynn immediately responded with Bethany Hamilton.

“I like Bethany Hamilton. I like that she’s Christian, that she’s brave; she lost her arm and kept on surfing,” she said.

“She had faith that she can be a pro surfer, and she is now,” Rilynn added.
