Five things San Clemente should know this week Fundraiser at Hobie’s to Raise Funds for Skatepark Coalition THE LATEST: As the city’s Beaches, Parks & Recreation Master Plan continues to be discussed, local artist Steven Lombardi has teamed up with Stance Socks and Hobie Surf Shop to raise funds for the San Clemente Skatepark Coalition. The Skatepark Coalition is looking to submit plans to the city for more lighting at the current Ralphs Skate Court and to expand skate park opportunities.

Lombardi’s company, Gritty Arts, designed a sock and T-shirt that will be available for purchase at the fundraiser, and there will be live music, raffles and an art show as well.

City to Select Colors for Summer Trolley Program THE LATEST: The colors of the San Clemente High School sports teams are likely to be the theme of the design on the city’s summer trolley program, which is expected to begin on Memorial Day weekend.

Trail to Surf Beach at San O Remains Temporarily Closed THE LATEST: Since the rains started coming in strong around San Clemente, parts of the road to Surf Beach at San Onofre State Park have been closed due to washouts.

State Parks, said it is his department’s responsibility to issue temporary closures to roads and parking lots when infrastructure is damaged.

“It’s been a combination of circumstances, and wet weather (closures) are part of our protocol to preserve public safety,” Lewis said. “We do close it during wet weather, and high surf and high tides also damage portions of the road, and we’re in the process of realigning the road to get traffic in and out safely.”

Lewis said the State Parks is working with the California Coastal Commission to get repairs done as soon as possible.

He also said some people have been cited because they’ve been parking illegally along the side of the roads in the area, but they’re not ticketed for entering the area during hours of operation.

“We have people working on it today to get it realigned,” Lewis said.

WHAT’S NEXT: Lewis said the closures are temporary, but with more rain in the forecast from Wednesday to Saturday, he said it’s not impossible that the road closures could continue. —Eric Heinz

Issa, Texas Rep. Introduce Latest Bill to Allow for Interim Nuclear Fuel Storage THE LATEST: Rep. Darrell Issa (R-California) and Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas) stated they have introduced the latest bill to allow for interim storage of spent nuclear fuel, according to a press release distributed Thursday afternoon, Jan. 12.

The bill is intended to amend the Nuclear Waste Storage Act. For Issa, it would allow for the removal of spent fuel planned to be stored on-site at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station just south of San Clemente. For Conaway, it could bring

the storage to his district at the company Waste Control Specialists in Andrews, Texas, he stated in the release.

The fuel would be considered stored in the interim because it is the responsibility of the Department of Energy to find a permanent home for it.

This is at least the third time Issa has been a sponsor or co-sponsor of a bill related to consolidated interim nuclear storage. The Interim Consolidated Storage Acts of 2015 and 2016 died before passing the House.

The bill would give the Secretary of Energy the ability to enact and modify contracts with facilities that are capable and have a permit to store the fuel until the department finds a permanent location.

“Until we can get temporary and—ideally—permanent storage facilities open, nuclear waste will remain on-site at more than 120 different sites nationwide,” Issa said. “…(T)he San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station houses more than 3.6 million pounds of nuclear material right on the coast, along a fault line, on one of the largest U.S. military bases, in the heart of one of our most densely populated communities. Allowing it to stay there indefinitely is only asking for trouble.”

Conaway stated in the release that the inability to store the fuel temporarily is the result of an “outdated law and bureaucratic inefficiencies.”

Most of that fuel is currently in cooling tanks or “wet storage.” At various meetings, officials from Southern California Edison, the majority stakeholder in SONGS, said the fuel is safest when it is stored in casks, called “dry storage.”

The company has been awarded a permit to bury the fuel on-site at the bluffs over San Onofre State Beach. Edison awarded a contract to Holtec International in 2015 to store the fuel in the casks it manufactures.

“This legislation allows the Department of Energy to cut through the red tape and

enter into contracts with these licensed facilities, such as the one in Andrews, ensuring that nuclear waste will be properly stored until a permanent site is established.”

Calvin Moore, a spokesperson for Issa’s office, said the bill is the same as the past two years, but he said it could have a better chance at moving forward since the discussions about interim storage are growing, and the change in representatives in Congress could help support Issa and Conaway’s bill.

“It’s clear that there’s going to be a few things working in tandem in finding places that want to accept the waste,” Moore said.

Moore said the Department of Energy’s plan to implement a consent-based siting process, which means the facilities would have to consent to storing the fuel rather than being ordered to by the federal government, should also help further the bill’s passage.

The Department of Energy is currently accepting comments on its interim storage program.

People may submit their comments to the plan at www.energy.gov/ne/downloads/consent-based-siting-process. The comment period is open until April 14.

WHAT’S NEXT: The bill does not have a number yet, and it does not yet appear to be entered into the U.S. Congress online database. Moore said it should be available at www.congress.gov in a day or two, but the bill can also be accessed by visiting www.sanclementetimes.com under the story with this headline. Hon. Kirk Nakamura, assistant presiding judge of the Orange County Superior Court and chair of the Grand Jury Recruitment and Selection Committee, announced that the Court has extended the deadline to apply to serve on the next Grand Jury to Feb. 1, 2017, due to a shortage of applicants.

The court must approve a full 19-member Grand Jury each fiscal year, and jurors dedicate 30 to 35 hours per week for $50 per week.

The Grand Jury provides civil oversight of local governments and agencies by reviewing and evaluating county, city and other agencies, including jails, schools and special districts, within Orange County.

At the conclusion of these investigations, the Grand Jury compiles written reports with its findings and recommendations for improvement. The Grand Jury also considers evidence for possible indictment of individuals for criminal charges and reviews issues of concern submitted by the public. However, the Grand Jury has no jurisdiction to review matters involving the Orange County Superior Court or state and federal agencies.

On quest to help people, local child teaches yoga to children and adults

H

e laid still on a yoga mat in the middle of the center, eyes closed and giving soft directions to his students.

The preteen teacher cultivated a Zen atmosphere by meditative recitation during a recent yoga class.

Larry Tabay Atkins IV, from San Clemente, is 11 years old and already has four different certifications in yoga in different disciplines. He goes by his middle name, Tabay.

Tabay has two circus yoga certificates (acrobatic yoga), one mild to severe autism certificate, and a 200-hour adult teacher training certificate, which he obtained Aug. 1.

“During the summer, my mom gave me the choice to either go to Europe or go to Paris and London,” Tabay said. “Instead, I said I’d like to do a 200-hour teacher training (course). I said so I could help other people, like yoga helped her.”

Sahel Anvarinejad, Tabay’s mother, had cancer a few years ago. She said going through treatment made it difficult to walk, let alone do yoga. As she recovered from treatment, Anvarinejad did her own 200-hour teaching course.

“Emotionally, I just broke down,” Anvarinejad said. “Tabay saw that yoga was helping physically and mentally. So… he said many people have cancer and don’t know how to do yoga, and he said he wanted to share it with as many people as possible and help them heal.”

Anvarinejad said she has been cancerfree for four years. She said she wasn’t surprised that Tabay wanted to do the 200-hour course.

“All throughout the year he had been saying he wanted to do it,” Anvarinejad said.

“So I gave him the choice, and I was a little surprised because he loves to travel, but he was very eager to get the certificate.”

Throughout his training, Tabay had to learn a plethora of poses and how to teach the correct form. He said the classes taught him to differentiate between popular poses that are often incorrectly done and how to correct practitioners’ form.

“I’ve been doing yoga for years now, and the training was very intense, but it was worth it,” he said. “We had to answer a lot of questions and do midterms and finals.

During the last part of the yoga training, I wasn’t feeling very well. But I didn’t want to quit.”

Anvarinejad said she thinks Tabay is one of—if not, the—youngest yoga instructor in the country based on some research she did online and a news cast on a 12-year-old girl that claimed she was the youngest person. Either way, India’s Shruti San Clemente Times January 19-25, 2017

Pandey was 6 years old when she started teaching.

“It helps people with so many different things, with stress, work, family, relationships, health and not a lot of people know that,” Anvarinejad said.

Tabay said he wants to teach yoga around the world and develop his own brand or company dedicated to spreading education in yoga. His entrepreneurial spirit is calling him to open as many yoga studios as possible.

“Some of the kids from (his middle school) class have stress from school, and it really helps them deal with that stress,” Tabay said.

Tabay wants to do a third certification in circus yoga, but he said it’s easier to teach children his own age as he can relate to them. On Wednesdays, Tabay hosts a LEGO yoga therapy session, which

involves using the toy building blocks as a way to center themselves.

Anvarinejad said in order to keep children focused and involved in yoga, it takes a certain level of skill. The classes must continue to move on different skill sets and breathing patterns to adress the different types of stress adults and children deal with.

Bahar Amjaei, Anvarinejad’s close friend, said she’s known Tabay since he was little, and she stuck with his mother through her bout with cancer.

“I’ve never done yoga before and today was my first time,” Amjaei said. “I thought Tabay did a great job, and I’d like to come back again.”

Anvarinejad has a wall full of yoga certifications of her own.

Amjaei said she thinks yoga has brought Tabay and his mother closer together.

“I saw Sahel doing yoga four years ago and Tabay was very involved and very patient and very interested,” Amjaei said.

Tabay’s father, Larry Atkins III, was a linebacker in the NFL for a few years. Atkins III said he’s noticed his own physical improvements after taking up yoga.

“Being an athlete and going through physical training, when he took me through his sessions, it was up there with some of the toughest things I’ve had to do physically,” Atkins III said. “I was surprised how hard it was, but at the same time (I enjoyed) how good it is for you. I’ve never really been through it before, but after going through it with him I wish it was something I had done a long time ago.”

Atkins III said he tried to keep up as best he could.

“I’m with him 100 percent with him with whatever he wants to do to support him,” Atkins III said. “It’s a great accomplishment, as far as what he’s been doing, and just his heart. He has a genuine heart, and he truly is an amazing kid. I think his energy just lifts everyone up.”

Kim Hanley, a teacher at Vista Del Mar Middle School, has been practicing yoga for 16 years and is Tabay’s English teacher.

“It was fun for me to be his student,” Hanley said. “He’s got this peaceful demeanor in class, kind of like (what you’d expect of) a yoga instructor. He’s very calm and focused in class. He does what he needs to do, and he’s a great student.”

Hanley said she learned a couple things about Vinyasa yoga in the class.

John Castillo, who participated in the class on Saturday, said his daughter had been taking classes from care4yoga for years.

“Just realizing every time I do yoga, it makes me feel better, and I’d like to come back,” Castillo said of why he sat in on the class.

Sarah and Alexa Castillo, John’s daughters, said they also enjoyed the classes.

Madeline Macchia, a sixth-grader, said the class was fun and exciting.

“I was really excited to see Tabay do all these special things and be recognized for all he has done,” Macchia said. “Every time I come here, I just know that I’m going to be happy for the rest of the day. It helps me think.” SC

What Would a Day without Undocumented Workers Be Like?

D

onald Trump made one thing very clear in this election cycle: Many Americans harbor a simmering resentment toward people who are here without legal status. Arguments can get as hot as a Baja border crossing when discussing a subject with so many complications. Humor is often the only refuge.

My favorite immigration statement is a picture of four rifle-armed Apaches.

WAVELENGTHS It reads, “Illegal ImmiBy Jim Kempton grants: Unless you are related to these guys, shut up about it.”

The most often touted accusation among people who dislike the current status is that undocumented individuals clog our emergency rooms, bring down our public school system and burden taxpayers.

Some of those charges are true; undocumented people do use Social Services and put their children in school. But it’s complicated. Can we really imagine keeping a child illiterate or refusing to treat a sick baby because their mother is not a certified American? Or rounding them up like criminals and shipping them back to where their children never lived?

Dear Donald J. Trump, I was one of many citizens of the United States that helped you acquire your next job, the president of the best country in the world, and I influenced a hell of a lot of people to follow suit. I gave you my vote for several reasons, with one being that you say what is on your mind instead of sanitizing and politically correcting everything before it leaves your mouth.

I like that frankness and believe that this political-incorrectness was the key to your campaign success. Also, putting Hillary Clinton in office was out of the question for me, as I fundamentally disagree with her policies and agenda.

All of that said, I believe it is very important that you stop with the petty tweets, emails and speeches containing grudges San Clemente Times January 19-25, 2017

As for the argument that undocumented immigrants cost U.S. citizens money, consider this: Without the army of farm workers, food prices would skyrocket. Ask any farmer in California and they will tell you in no uncertain terms that if we extract the undocumented laborers, California’s $100 billion agricultural industry would collapse. The same is true for many other industries as well. The net benefit of this extremely cheap labor is an economic gain dwarfing the costs of social services.

Do you think U.S. citizens would pick fruit for $6 an hour? For perspective, that’s about $700 a month after taxes, Social Security and unemployment are taken out.

(Yes, undocumented workers pay over 11 billion documented tax dollars annually).

By the way, if you have ever picked fruit for a day, one truth becomes abundantly clear: A lazy immigrant is an oxymoron; there are no people on earth who work harder. Many do the work no one else wants to do with a smile on their face and dignity in their bearing. Industrious, lawabiding loving parents; honest, humble, reliable and religious—these are the traits of the vast majority of immigrants from all nations, identical to what we hold as American ideals.

In fact, it might be a good time to deactivate your social media accounts altogether and get a new speechwriter. There are more people than you think that are over your non-presidential behaviors—and they hope that this will magically subside on the day that you take office.

After the campaigning was over, I was hoping to see a man with a “new-andimproved” attitude and a presidential temperament. This office requires a president who is an eloquent speaker, with very thick skin and a mature philosophy with respect to world leadership and equality of citizenry.

Furthermore, I am really starting to distrust you when you tell everyone in the world that something didn’t happen, when there is video that clearly shows that it did.

It is a very dangerous road that you are traveling when you say that you did not mock a handicapped reporter, when there is high-definition video of you doing exactly that. The fact that you did it is less of a problem than you continuously denying it. Repeating over and over that it didn’t happen—when it clearly did—is a very big

Today, there are an estimated 11 million undocumented workers in the U.S. We are unlikely to deport these millions of families. So, the challenge is finding pragmatic, acceptable solutions to a colossal and complex problem.

I hardly subscribe to the notion that unchecked entry is an ideal process for immigration. But like Jeb Bush, a former Republican governor from Florida, I also respect the struggling families whose reason for coming to this country is the same as our own forefathers—to build a better life for themselves and their children.

For the considerable current undocumented community (many who have lived here for decades) there has to be a fair, workable path to legal work status and eventual citizenship. It isn’t just a practical matter. It is most likely a true benefit to both our social and economic well-being.

problem that started as a campaign stunt, but is no longer acceptable to Americans, as our president.

At this rate, you will surely end a short stint as the Commander-in-Chief in an impeachment hearing, because the opposing party is just waiting in the tall grass, ready to pounce. By the way, I didn’t vote for a liar; I voted for an honest man who spoke his mind and didn’t spend time on social media like an adolescent, vindicating immature conflicts with everyone who opposes or disagrees with him.

I believe that there were some “unfair” practices against you since you were elected, but it is time to get over it and ensure the public who voted for you did the right thing, and for the right reasons.

If you disappoint us, you will have ensured the election of the exact politicians into office that we want out of office for the foreseeable future. You might also ruin our country, in the process. I certainly hope that you heed this and all other similar warnings.

Ole’s Vision: San Clemente, the Spanish Village by the Sea

T

he unique character of San Clemente is directly attributable to the demanding tenacity of a single individual: a real estate developer of Norwegian decent originally from Wisconsin by way of Washington state, where he had served as state legislator and later even as Mayor of Seattle. This man was Ole Hanson. When Hanson set his sights on bringing to life his vision of a Spanish Village in America, he was HISTORICAL HAPPENINGS no novice to the world of

Ghantous Hanson’s involvement in such ventures stretched back to the early 1900s with his successful development of Lake Forest Park on the north shore of Lake Washington and his ownership of lots of land around Puget Sound Naval Yard. He made a lot of money in the Pacific Northwest and then lost his fortune in the economic downturn that followed World War I. Finding himself heavily in debt, Hanson left the Seattle area for Mexico City, where he gained 50 percent owner-

ship of 52,000 acres of oil fields worth half a million dollars for his role as arbitrator in a large land dispute. But alas, once again, when the oil market took a sudden dive, his fortunes changed and the land became virtually worthless. He returned to the U.S. to start all over again.

Hanson was a more seasoned business man at this point of his life due to these adversities and the successful run of developing the 2,000-home Slauson Avenue Tract in Los Angeles and the almost 600room magnificent Potter Hotel in Santa Barbara. But Hanson then witnessed the devastating impact of the Santa Barbara earthquake of 1925 and became inspired by that town’s deliberate embrace of Spanish-style architecture as it set out to rebuild in a planned manner. This style, complementary to California’s Spanish cultural history, had been introduced at the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Diego in 1915. Hanson was contacted by his long-time business associate, millionaire financier and oil man Hamilton Cotton to head up a syndicate of bankers and businessmen to purchase the land that would become San Clemente. He decided

to make the building style reminiscent of the Mediterranean villages and towns of the south of Spain the guiding inspiration for this latest real estate venture.

Hanson had first seen this area of the California coast years earlier on a train trip from Los Angeles to San Diego—a stretch of coastline in the region that he determined to be perfectly suited for the building of his dream city. Located exactly midway between Southern California’s two main cities, the property was linked to Los Angeles and San Diego by the main line of the Santa Fe Railroad and El Camino Real. Additionally, the site was unique on the Southern California coast, consisting of rolling hills that sloped gently down to the ocean, as opposed to the high cliffs that define much of the region’s coastline.

On Nov. 8, 1925, the Los Angeles Examiner announced the founding of the new city of San Clemente, the Spanish Village.

Reaction to the announcement was

mixed, with many, particularly those involved in real estate, openly questioning the wisdom of establishing a new town some 66 miles from Los Angeles or San Diego. According to Hanson’s biographer, Homer Banks, some referred to the plan as a “hare-brained scheme,” while others said Hanson himself was “just plain crazy.” Even his financial associates were pessimistic.

There had never been a city there before, and worse than that was the fact that Hanson did not talk about profits, but about building in a certain style, the Spanish style of architecture only, and dared to put in his sale contract a clause that forced all who wanted to build to submit all plans to an architectural board for approval.

he diner is a quintessentially American institution. Home of the 3 a.m. burger, the omelet dinner, the break-up coffee and the shake after the game, the diner serves myriad roles—and myriad foods to serve those moments.

As a diner, Harbor House is unparalleled in Orange County. It’s got everything from the expansive menu to the casual, well-worn seating to the nostalgic wall tchotchkes (though many would rightly argue that vintage cinema posters hardly do tchotchkes make).

So it’s hard to pick one dish to sum up all that Harbor House represents, but the teriyaki burger is a good attempt. It’s both a monument to the juicy diner burger category and also a reminder that diner food is best when its locally inspired and inspires cautious optimism.

At the Movies: Three Recommendations

I

am doing something a little bit different in this week’s review. I’m recommending three movies that have been out for a while but are still worth seeing. January is a dead zone for new releases, and it’s hard to catch so many of the meaty dramas and character studies that come out during the holiday season. Those include Jeff Nichols’ Loving, Garth Davis’ Lion and Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson; the latter two are still in theaters and the former is on VOD next week.

Loving is a quiet and touching period piece on Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), a real interracial couple who took on Virginia and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1967 to make their marriage legitimate. Nichols takes a more intimate and romantic route than what you would typically see in a courtroom drama, and it still works. Lion is another biopic, based on an Indian orphan named Saroo (Sunny Pawar and Dev Patel) who is adopted by an Australian couple (David Wenham and Nicole Kidman) before using Google Earth as an adult to find his biological family. Davis’ film has a strong first half with some excellent child acting from Pawar.

Paterson is a simple, slice-of-life feature that follows a New Jersey bus driver named Paterson (Adam Driver) and his girlfriend, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani), around their weekly routines in a town that also happens to be called Paterson. Jarmusch is in familiar territory here focusing on an everyday, ordinary citizen, yet it’s not phoned in. If you’re interested in movies the rest of the month, catch these. SC Page 11

A Not-So-Sweet Start to a Healthy New Year

ast month after reviewing my holiday to-do list and checking it twice, I called my older son living in the Midwest to assure him I’d be baking his favorite seasonal treat—our traditional dessert.

“Thanks, but don’t bother making it, I won’t eat it,” my son said. Surprised, I praised him for his healthy resolve, and after saying goodbye, I merrily crossed off one task on my long list.

By Shelley Murphy the oversized beverages seven months ago. It wasn’t due to years of my nagging or the calendar ushering in a new year, but his own resolution.

After discovering his coveted 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola contained 39 grams of sugar, my son began making nutritional changes to his diet and eliminating sugary substances. “I figured cutting-out soda and sugar was the best way to start eating healthy,” he told me.

My son’s been strong-willed since the day he was born, and as a millennial, expects immediate gratification. So, it makes sense when he swore off sugar and soda he “quit cold turkey.”

He admits he struggled, saying he missed the sweet drinks most but by the third week he had no craving or desire for sugar. “At work when we get an email about donuts in the breakroom I’m the only one not to get up,” he said. My son, who once considered sugar his favorite food group, now eats kale—and likes it.

Annually the most popular resolutions include losing weight and eating healthier, and advertisers bombard consumers with gimmicks and fads promising shortcuts to reach healthy diet and fitness goals.

It’s probably not coincidental that this week, January 16-20, marks National Sugar Awareness Week (www.sugarawareness.com). The website challenges people to abstain from sugar for five days while sharing their experience including the physical, mental and emotional effect of a sugar-free existence.

The website warns that reducing sugar intake is no easy task as it is found in almost every processed food, and there are over 50 pseudonyms for sugar.

I realized this when I set out to stock-up on healthy food for my older son’s holiday visit. I grabbed the yogurt I’d been buying for years and read the label to find that its six ounces contained 27 grams of sugar.

No wonder I liked it.

In San Clemente, year-round, The Noble Path Foundation (TNPF) is dedicated to supporting locals looking to make healthy lifestyle changes (www.thenoblepathfoundation.org).

Cindi Juncal, founder and president of TNPF, established the non-profit in 2012 and I joined her team soon after. Juncal’s mission is to “change the world by changing the diet and lifestyle habits of our youth since their health is what determines our future.”

TNPF invites community members of all ages to take its Awareness Pledge and kick-off the New Year by trading processed foods and sugar for real food. Participants taking the Pledge agree to adhere to the American Heart Association and World Health Organization recommendations for daily maximum sugar intake: 12 grams (3 teaspoons) for young children; 24 grams (6 teaspoons) for women; and 36 grams (9 teaspoons) for men.

“This is not the recommended sugar intake, sometimes people hear numbers and think that’s what you should shoot for; these guidelines are what the body safely metabolizes. If you go over that you run

into trouble,” Juncal said.

While my older son’s holiday homecoming was too short, it was long enough for several of his friends to notice his fit transformation and ask the secret behind his healthy regime. They were amazed to learn his renewed wellbeing didn’t involve expensive equipment, memberships and supplements but free education, awareness and choices.

I haven’t made a New Year’s resolution in five years. Ironically, my last resolution was to cut back on sugar. This year it didn’t take the celebration of a special holiday to motivate me to renew my resolution but instead the inspiration of a special son.

SC SURF SOCCER CLUB EXCELS AT WINTER CLASSIC The San Clemente Surf soccer club had two teams excel at the Murrieta Surf Classic tournament on Jan. 15.

The club’s 2008 Ware boys team won its division in dominating fashion. The squad scored 22 goals in four victories, including an 8-3 win over San Diego Soccer Club in the championship game. The team trailed 0-2 in the final, but rallied to win.

The team includes: Luke Pool, Doran Farrell, Andres Montoya, Julian Duzman, John McClenahan, Arthur Tuverson, Maxwell Williams, Cesar Melgar, Owen Pratt and Tyson Christensen. The team is coached by Cameron Ware.

The club’s 2008 Ware girls team also had a successful run at the Murrieta Surf Classic and advanced to the championship game of its division. The team includes: Ava Edwards, Katarina Piantka, Sienna Marsh, Abby Wegener, Gabriela Charpentier, Lucy White, Cyndal Yetter, Lily Rasic and Blake Power. The team is coached by Ware.

NEW INTERACTIVE SPORTS APP TO BENEFIT NICK PASQUALE FOUNDATION FireFan, a new interactive sports gaming app, has partnered with the San Clementebased Nick Pasquale Foundation for a unique fundraising opportunity.

FireFan is a free app that allows users to predict minute-by-minute scenarios in professional sports games. Once registered, users can join leagues with family, friends or the public, and wager points on the outcome of a drive during a football game, or the final score.

Water Polo Topples Chargers El Toro proved to be the hurdle the San Clemente girls water polo team could not clear last season en route to a second-place finish in the South Coast League. The two rivals squared off twice last season, and the Chargers came away with wins both times.

In their first league matchup of the season on Jan. 11, the Tritons got some payback.

San Clemente defeated El Toro on the road 8-6 to take the early lead in the league standings. Brooklyn Aguilera scored four goals, Tera Richardson chipped in two, and goalie Victoria Reardon made six saves for the Tritons in the win.

The triumph over El Toro came just one day after San Clemente breezed its way past Dana Hills 11-5 in a league matchup.

San Clemente competed in the Santa Barbara Tournament last week, and went 1-4 overall. The Tritons return to league play on Jan. 23 with a matchup against Trabuco Hills.

Marshall Takes Third at Doc Buchanan Invitational Senior wrestler Kyle Marshall continued his dominant 2017 season with a thirdplace finish in the 195-pound weight class at the Doc Buchanan Invitational on Jan.

Emma Borie led the Tritons (11-8, 1-1) with a game-high 16 points in a closely contested 49-46 win over El Toro on Jan. 10. Two days later, Aliso Niguel erupted to outscore the Tritons 21-7 in the fourth quarter to earn a 60-53 win.

San Clemente was scheduled to play San Juan Hills in a league game on Jan. 17.

Girls Soccer Shuts Out Dolphins, Readies for Tough Stretch The San Clemente girls soccer team shut out rival Dana Hills 2-0 on Jan. 10 in both teams’ South Coast League opener.

Tori Phillips and Rylee Rask each found the back of the net for the Tritons, and goalie Lauren Brzykcy made six saves to earn the clean sheet.

For the last eight years, it’s been fun having a surfer in the White House

ight years ago at the presidential inauguration, newly elected President Barack Obama walked down the parade route in Washington D.C. throwing heartfelt shakas to everyone in the crowd.

There are things you don’t unlearn from surfing. No matter where the journey of life takes you, the ocean remains a profound teacher, and as the first African American president in U.S. history made his procession through the capitol, he did so with an air of aloha in his step. One might say he was stoked!

Growing up on the south shore of Oahu, young Barry Obama enjoyed hanging at Sandy Beach, a world-famous bodysurfing spot reputed for its dangerous shore break.

In this cauldron of froth, and foam, and sand, and tubes, the Pacific doles out stout lessons on humility—something that would likely prove to be a powerful asset when negotiating with world leaders. Over the years, Sandy Beach, located on the eastern corner of the island, has broken backs and relegated otherwise healthy men to wheelchairs. But for locals like Barry, perhaps without the ways, means or inclination to longboard in Town or chase big waves on the North Shore, the break is a place where friends and family can gather, get barreled, enjoy a picnic, and as they say in the Islands, “just cruise.”

protected expansive swaths of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. In his final days in office, he granted National Monument status to a number of locations up and down the California coast, as well as a multitude of other natural treasures throughout the U.S., including Bears Ears in Utah. It’s my contention that without the sensibilities of a waverider and their keen connection to the environment, he would not have protected half the territory he did. Wherever you fall on the political spectrum, and whatever your opinions on the successes of his domestic and foreign policies, taking bold steps to protect the world for future generations is indeed a noble step.

Last summer, at the top of the president’s reading list was William Finnegan’s Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life, which received a Pulitzer Prize in 2016—yes, a “surf book” was considered the best book in all the land. During his vacation, he was looking forward to finding a good shade tree on Maui and settling in to absorb a biography that very much paralleled his own journey in Hawaii. In the private quarters of the White House, he hung surf photos just like all of us do in our homes. And when it was announced that the sport of surfing had been selected for the Olympics in 2020, he gave a press conference in the Oval Office with a couple of world champ John John

already Houshmand’s making statements.

In early January, his surfboard sponsor, Haydenshapes, released a much-anticipated video project that featured him alongside current A-list freesurfer Craig Anderson.

The video’s been widely circulated throughout the surf media, which is giving his profile a healthy boost.

And more than just dropping edits, in the year ahead the 16-year-old goofy-footer will be stepping out onto the world’s stage to start the arduous process of accumulating valuable WSL Qualifying Series points.

Houshmand just made it to the second round of the Shoe City Pro in Huntington, which is a step in the right direction (pun intended). After that, he’s off to Australia for six weeks to surf and compete.

Given the trajectory he’s on, we expect to see a lot more of this San Clemente talent in the months ahead. SC

COLE HOUSHMAND

ew Year, new beginnings. You know the drill. But for Cole Houshmand, it’s full speed ahead.

Last year, Cole enjoyed a breakout surf season when he won the NSSA Open Junior crown, then quickly stepped up his game to the WSL Pro Junior level, where he carved out third place finishes in both the RVCA Pro Junior and then the Soup Bowl Pro Junior in Barbados. He also underwent a surfing rite of passage when he jumped on a boat trip to Indonesia, producing a video that was widely seen on Surfline.com.

Midway through his presidency, Obama and his family stayed on the North Shore of Oahu during a winter vacation. They chose secluded accommodations near Mokuleia, not far from a surf spot called Silver Channels. At the time, I was on the island covering the North Shore beat for ESPN. On down days, I’d fallen in with a group of lifeguards at Waimea Bay and every day at 10 a.m. we’d meet up at the bay to workout.

Some of the lifeguard crew had been hired by the White House to serve as lifeguards for the president.

“He can’t go bodysurfing. It’s a matter of national security,” said one of the lifeguards.”

“He has to sit on the beach and read or go play golf. I don’t think he’s very happy about it,” said another. “We’ve been taking the girls out on jet ski rides and they’ve been in the ocean every day, but he can’t bodysurf... and I think he really wants to.

They described how the Secret Service was always nearby—making sure he didn’t get in past his ankles. We all joked that he was just like every other working stiff that can’t go surfing because sometimes the job comes first. Here’s a guy that commands the world’s finest Navy and he can’t even ride a wave or two. Oh, the irony! It was an interesting look into the life of our wavestarved surfing president.

As this story goes to print, there are 48 hours left in the Obama presidency. I’m going to miss his eloquence and class. I’m going to miss the stability he provided our country. I’m going to miss his humility and pure adoration for his wife and daughters.

And I’m really going to miss having a surfer in the White House—let me put it this way, do you think Donald Trump surfs? SC

Swell is largest in the afternoon/evening and standout winter spots may see some larger sets the second half of the day. Unfortunately, winds do not cooperate with moderate South winds early, shifting from the West in the morning and holding steady through the afternoon.

Outlook: Medium to fairly solid WNW swell shows for Friday and this weekend with plenty of head high to overhead (5-8’) surf along with larger sets for standouts, especially on Saturday when the swell is strongest. Winds are largely unfavorable with mainly onshore flow Fri/Sat, possibly improving on Sunday. Easing surf through the first half of next week.
