Five things San Clemente should know this week Group Aims to End Racism around Orange County THE LATEST: A local group, Revelation 7:9, is taking steps to combat racism by showing compassion and understanding to the local community. The group is faith-based but accepts anyone who wants to come to their gatherings.

On Saturday, Jan. 28, Larry Prudholme, a self-described co-laborer with the other board members of Revelation 7:9, helped organize a breakfast and a guest speaker, former MLB player Ben Julianel, at Heritage Christian Fellowship in San Clemente.

“The main objective is we love to bring people together, from different cultures and backgrounds, and love each other,” Prudholme said.

Saturday’s gathering was the organization’s first.

Prudholme said at one time in his life he was a black supremacist, but he said he eventually found comfort in associating with all people.

“We need to break the back of racism in America, and if we’re going to do that, then it has to be people who are known by their love to jumpstart it,” he said.

WHAT’S NEXT: Organizers said they intend to bring the movement to north Orange County and the rest of the immediate area.

Pot Commodity: San Clemente Voted in Favor of Prop 64, Records Show THE LATEST: In last November’s election, the majority of San Clemente voters were in favor of Proposition 64 (to legalize recreational marijuana)—17,119 voted yes and 15,049 voted no—according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters statement of votes.

In 2016, San Clemente City Council enacted a zoning ordinance that bans businesses from selling and distributing marijuana within the city. This decision was made with the forethought that San Clemente would be stuck with the state’s laws, if Gov. Jerry Brown didn’t enact AB 21, which initially required local governments to pass their own regulations on marijuana regulation before the proposition even went to election. Brown didn’t, but the City Council moved forward on it in anticipation of the results, voting unanimously.

At City Council meetings leading up to the decision, people against Prop 64 outnumbered supporters at least 10 to one during public hearings.

WHAT’S NEXT: People will still be able to grow up to six cannabis plants in their homes in San Clemente without having to obtain a license or permit.

In looking at what could be done in the future, Mayor Kathy Ward said this outcome will not likely change the city’s law.

“I don’t anticipate that would change the Council’s decision on sales and delivery services and now cultivation operations doing business in San Clemente,” Ward

said in an email. “The vote was unanimous to not provide sales, cultivation and delivery, and that was not approved whichever way the (vote) would go.”

Ward mentioned that personal cultivation, up to six plants inside a residence, is still allowed.

Councilman Chris Hamm said he doesn’t think the margin is significant enough to warrant any changes to the existing bans.

“I’m committed to preserving the quality and character of our community.

With any issue facing San Clemente, if there was a large grassroots movement for it, I would be willing to reconsider our zoning,” Hamm wrote in an email. “I believe the negative impacts far outweigh the positive impacts of having that type of business in our beachside community. I support the direction our state has taken and support individual rights to grow/use in the privacy of your own home.” —EH

FAM: Point-in-Time Homeless Population Numbers Will Be Released in May THE LATEST: About 150 volunteers got up early Saturday morning, Jan. 28, to help Family Assistance Ministries (FAM) and Orange County agencies track the population of homeless people in San Clemente.

Mary Perdue, executive director of FAM, said the total number of homeless people is not known yet, as many people branched off to do their own search.

“It was a great experience with community people and local businesses and tons of different volunteers,” Perdue said, adding many of the volunteers took training courses needed for the court in San Clemente.

WHAT’S NEXT: The final numbers were sent to 211 OC, which will publish a final report. 211 OC oversees the count every two years and helps people with social services and assistance. The report is expected to be published in early May. —EH

Lifetime Fitness Proposes New Clubhouse Four Times Current Size THE LATEST: During a Design Review Subcommittee meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 22, Lifetime Fitness, which purchased the former Rancho San Clemente Tennis & Fitness Club, presented plans for a new clubhouse—four times the size of the current clubhouse—as well as a few new amenities.

The old clubhouse is planned to be demolished and a new clubhouse is ex-

pected to be 44,000 square feet in order to accommodate various classes and workout facilities.

In doing so, six of the 19 tennis courts will be demolished, and a new swimming pool is to be constructed.

Last year, Lifetime Fitness had submitted plans for a new facility, but they were far from what San Clemente officials were looking for. The new plans appear to conform to what officials want and the aesthetics of San Clemente’s Spanish Colonial Revival.

WHAT’S NEXT: The plans will have to go through extensive revisions on particular aspects to conform to the city’s guidelines, but the Design Review Subcommittee members seemed optimistic about the project. Jeff Melby, senior vice president of real estate, development and construction with Lifetime, said he expects the new facility could be up and running within nine months to a year. —EH

CalTrans: Ortega Highway to Open in Three Weeks THE LATEST: The California Department of Transportation announced Tuesday morning, Jan. 31, that Ortega Highway could be restored and reopened in about three weeks, so long as weather permits.

That estimate comes following an investigation of the storm damage by a CaltTrans geological technical engineer, said CalTrans spokeswoman Jocelyn Whitfield.

The highway has been closed eastbound at Gateway Place and westbound at Nichols Institute since Jan. 25 due to severe damage caused by heavy rainfall.

Officials said the roadway was “severely undermined by the recent storms,” specifically at post mile 5.5, which is about 1.5 miles east of Antonio Parkway.

The closure going eastbound in Orange County is near Cristianitos and Gibby Roads in San Juan Capistrano, east of Antonio Parkway and La Pata Avenue. Coming westbound from Riverside County, the closure is at Nichols Institute Road in San Juan Capistrano.

SCHS Dance Team Racks up Five First-Place Wins over the Weekend The San Clemente High School Dance Team competed in this season’s first two USA competitions on Saturday and Sunday, qualifying for Nationals in five dances and winning five first-place awards.

On Saturday, the team competed at Sonora High School against 20 other Southern California high schools, bringing home first place in the small dance, intermediate dance and character categories.

On Sunday, the team competed at Glendale High School’s USA event against 18 other teams, resulting in first place wins for large lyrical and intermediate categories.

The team’s other awards included second place wins for large dance and character; and fourth place for small dance.

Out of 41 soloists, Lauren Adolph was the only San Clemente soloist to qualify for

the top six solo finals, where she earned a sixth place finish.

Camp Pendleton Celebrates 75 Years Camp Pendleton is commemorating its 75th anniversary with a series of celebratory events now through September 2017.

Base personnel will also participate in a “75 Years of Service” campaign in which Camp Pendleton volunteers will be helping a number of local communities.

Freedom Train i-5 Freedom Network hosts fundraiser to raise awareness of human trafficking

T

he San Clemente-based i-5 Freedom Network, which works to combat human trafficking in Orange County, hosted a fundraising event, “Be a Big Cheese,” at The Cellar on Monday, Jan. 30, to bolster its future training sessions.

The group trains people to recognize signs of possible human trafficking activities and has developed relationships with organizations such as the California Hotel and Lodging Association to tackle issues.

“The i-5 is a training organization, ostensibly, and we try to raise awareness of human trafficking with community organizations, but the ultimate objective is to train businesses to work within their lane to do something about it,” said Brenda Wells, the founder and president of the i-5 Freedom Network.

The organization is also working with the city to pass laws that would make it easier to address massage businesses that illegally offer sex services.

mate ones from the illicit ones and create the right ordinances that are easy for the legitimate ones to follow but (are) uncomfortable for the ones who are trying to do wrong,” Wells said.

Wells said Todd Forester of the Holiday Inn in San Clemente has been instrumental in his efforts to alert police of possible human trafficking. She said Forester alerted authorities on three separate occasions where there may have been incidents.

The Department of Homeland Security has been working with the group since it was formed and provides a broader aware-

ness of the issue, Wells said.

“We’re trying to come in and offer a very granular training, a very specific and very targeted training for the industries we work with,” Wells said, adding they work with the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force as well.

Kimberly Yim, author of Refuse to Do Nothing: Finding Your Power to Abolish Modern Day Slavery, is the founder of the organization San Clemente Abolitionists, which used to meet fairly regularly but has since joined the i-5 Freedom Network.

During the event, Yim told the San

Clemente Times she hopes the training the network provides will be available online in the future.

Recently, the i-5 Freedom Network added Spanish language options for hotel training. The group has also created its own training material. Group officials said they can prepare people in 45 minutes to know what signs to look for in their particular field.

City Councilwoman Lori Donchak attended the event and shared a story about a small child and a man who were found in San Clemente. Donchak said the girl had run away from home when a predatory man lured her into trafficking for 90 days.

“If you don’t think it happens here, it definitely does happen here,” Donchak said, bucking the notion that San Clemente’s statistically friendly city is immune to human trafficking. She said the I-5 freeway and other features make the town susceptible to such trafficking.

About 18 months ago, the i-5 Freedom Network was able to get the city of San Clemente to pass a resolution to be mindful of human trafficking activity within the city.

According to an Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force report, trafficking numbers climbed gradually from 2011 to 2013, but seemed to plateau over time.

However, the number of new victims was always higher than existing victims in that timeframe.

Piping Up Local students lead march against construction of major oil pipelines

or at least the last two weeks, people around the nation have protested different actions taken by Donald Trump in his first days in office, and San Clemente has been no different.

On Saturday, Jan. 28, Team Zissou, an environmental awareness group comprised of San Clemente High School students, organized a local march protesting Trump’s order to allow for two controversial pieces of oil and gas infrastructure— the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) and Keystone XL Pipeline. Those opposing the pipelines marched from the Community Center around Del Mar and back down to the point of origin, the same route the San Clemente Women’s March on Washington took last week.

Protestors chanted “Water is Life” while they walked, a common refrain on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North and South Dakota, where “water protectors” have set up multiple camps to peacefully protest the construction of DAPL. ta, Canada, to refineries in the U.S., where it would then be exported. Former President Barack Obama vetoed a bill allowing for its construction in 2015, but Trump has already taken action to permit it.

Jackson Hinkle, president and founder of Team Zissou, spoke to the protesters who attended.

“When President Trump gave the approval for the pipeline to be built, our

club saw it as a moment where we should take a stand,” Hinkle said, adding he was inspired by demonstrations that took place in Los Angeles the week prior. “I truly believe the administration that’s in office now is not going to pull back on this. All we can hope for is that enough people seeing the issues here, will create a big enough movement to lead the change.”

Hinkle said he is optimistic the protests,

locally and worldwide, will have enough momentum to sway the minds of the powers that be.

The San Clemente march was held in conjunction with the San Clemente Beach Conservation Program, the Juañeno Band of Mission Indians-Acjachemen Nation, San Clemente Green, SCHS Blue Oceans Club and Occupy Orange County.

Emily Glaser, a junior at San Clemente High School, attended the march with a sign quoting Martin Luther King, Jr., “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

“It’s an injustice that this pipeline (DAPL) is going through the Indian reservation, and these people are nonviolently protesting, yet they’re being shot at with rubber bullets,” Glaser said. “Not only does the pipeline have the potential to pollute waters … it is so wrong. It takes away their rights.”

Theresa Romero, a chairwoman of the Tribal Council of the Juañeno Band of Mission Indians-Acjachemen Nation, was at the march. Romero said the tainting of water sources from the pipelines and destruction of sacred native lands must be prevented.

“It’s going to be a tough battle,” Romero said. “It’s interesting we find out that when the pipeline went through Bismarck (North Dakota), it was rerouted because it was a threat to public health, and now that it’s going through native lands and public lands, it’s not about public health.” SC

DUI Crash A man crashed his vehicle on Tuesday, Jan. 24, while driving under the influence, OCSD Lt. Mark Stichter said.

The incident took place at 9:25 p.m. on the 800 block of Camino de los Mares. George Michael Ellis, 23, crashed into a parked car at the location and was arrested for driving under the influence, resisting arrest, possession of a dirk/dagger, possession of a loaded firearm in his car and unlawful transportation of a firearm.

Ellis was released after posting bail.

Drunk Driver Strikes San Clementean in Laguna Niguel In Laguna Niguel, a former San Clemente teacher was struck by a driver while he was walking on Jan. 26.

Jamie Mulford, 34, of Laguna Niguel, was arrested in the incident and was placed in jail on a $300,000 bond.

Scott Clark, 56, was on foot when Mulford allegedly struck him while driving her vehicle under the influence. Sources who know Clark said he is still in intensive care but has been responding.

The case is being investigated by the OCSD Major Accident Reconstruction Team (MART) and is still under investigation. The victim is still in the hospital.

Car on Fire A car was in flames at 3:10 p.m. on El Camino Real on Friday, Jan. 27, after the driver struck a tree and damaged a fire hydrant, OCSD officials said. Two men in their 20s were involved in the accident, and they were transported to an area hospital with non-trauma injuries. A cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and the case is still under investigation. A report had not been filed as of Tuesday morning, Stichter said. SC

Letters to the Editor TRUMP IS TEMPERAMENTALLY UNFIT BILL PRESTRIDGE, San Clemente

After reading Dr. Paul A. Weherle, M.D.’s letter in the Jan. 26-Feb. 1 edition of the San Clemente Times about President Donald Trump, I am convinced that he is correct in stating that our new President is unfit for office and is indeed a mentally flawed individual “with certifiable narcissistic personality disorder with pronounced sociopathic traits,” WebMD’s definition of narcissistic personality disorder.

My impressions are that Trump thinks about himself most of the time and talks about himself—that he craves attention and admiration, and exaggerates his talents and achievements. He sets unrealistic goals and has wide and fast mood swings.

Someone like Trump may appear to have high self-esteem, but the opposite is probably true. There appears to be a deep sense of insecurity underneath his grand exterior. At the very least, he leaves a trail of hurt feelings in his wake.

It’s evident that Trump can’t stand criticism: he makes excuses and refuses to take responsibility for his flaws and failures, and he sees himself as a natural leader who can easily sway others. But he doesn’t listen and often interrupts; it’s a one-way street—all take, no give.

The United States is in big trouble with Donald Trump at the helm.

COYOTE WARNING THOMAS POTWORA, San Clemente

We live in Forster Ranch, and this past Saturday morning we had one of those things happen to us that you always hear about but never think it could happen to you. Just before 8 a.m., I heard what has become a pretty typical sound of a coyote in a fight with a small animal. It only took a second to realize that the small animal that was squealing was one of my two dogs.

What I didn’t expect was for my 7-yearold son to scream, “Dad, there is a coyote in our backyard.” By the time I ran out, the coyote dropped our dog and jumped back over our 6-foot, wrought-iron fence with the greatest of ease. Fortunately, it looks like our dog will be fine, but two weeks prior our neighbor wasn’t so lucky.

A coyote killed her dog, and the best estimate was that it happened about 2:30 p.m. in her completely fenced-off backyard.

For those of you who have dogs, please be extra careful. After this happened, there where multiple people who reached out to us who heard of coyotes attacking other dogs or having very close calls. For us, life has definitely changed. Our dogs San Clemente Times February 2-8, 2017

used to have the backyard to themselves but that has changed after seeing with my own eyes how vulnerable they are. For those of you who have small children, I would be remiss not to write this letter to remind all of you to be extra vigilant and present, even in your own backyard.

The reality is that we live very close to nature. Speaking with Animal Service Officer Dana Friedman, he stated that many coyotes feed off the fruit that is not picked up, cat/dog food that is left out, and we discussed how sometimes people literally leave food for the coyotes, which is against the law. What I wasn’t aware of is that coyotes are a pack animal. If one coyote is eradicated, the pack will search the area looking for its lost member. If we can help eliminate their food source, there would be less of a desire for the coyotes to enter our neighborhoods.

Here’s to working together to help our community be safer. I do want to give special thanks to Dr. Ramsey and those at San Clemente Veterinary Hospital for taking extra special care of our dog and providing wonderful care. They stated this was their third coyote attack in a week. Additionally, in what is a very difficult job, I would also like to thank Officer Friedman. This is the second time we have had contact with Officer Friedman, and he is always beyond gracious and thorough in his approach.

WOMEN’S MARCH SHOWED STRENGTH IN MESSAGES ROGER JOHNSON, San Clemente

It was heartwarming indeed to see the huge turnout for the San Clemente Women’s March on Jan. 21. Observers estimated that at least 1,000 participated, which made it one of the largest demonstrations in the history of San Clemente. Although it was billed as a women’s march, there were

The demonstration was friendly and peaceful. Marchers filled the sidewalks stretching all the way from the community center to the top of Del Mar. Shopkeepers came out to applaud and motorists honked in approval. Although the purpose was to support the rights of women, many also chose to voice their disapproval of the Trump administration. Some participants wore “Nasty Woman” T-shirts and one woman held a sign saying, “NOPE” (Not my President Ever). Another held a sign reading, “I Teach My Sons Respect for Women.”

Many chose to focus on women’s rights with signs reading, “Women’s Rights Are Human Rights,” “Misogyny is for Wimps” and “Watch Me Roar.” A little girl held a sign saying, “Girl Power—I am the Future.” Other signs championed causes such as “Protect My Planet” or “I Believe in Public Education.” One said, “Build Bridges, Not Walls.”

My favorite signs included a kid with a sign that read, “Make American Tolerant Again” and a man whose sign read, “Make America Think Again.” Overall, the rally was an impressive demonstration of women speaking out. The rally did not match the 20,000 people who turned out in Santa Ana or the 6,000 who protested in

Greetings from a faithful reader. I just wanted to share the feedback that many of “us” (readers) are feeling that a great local paper such as yours should stick to local issues—especially in the editorial and Letters to the Editor section. Leave the editorializing and politicizing on a national level to other media for which it is better suited. The last presidential election and its lingering remnants has been more polarizing than previous elections. You do no service to your readers to continue to

allow the rants. When I opened today’s paper, the very first letter took personal potshots at the president and also at the writer of a previous letter. To me, it is inappropriate for you to print that sort of thing. Policy-based criticism is one thing, but personal attacks are not (at any level).

But once again, that brings me back to the request that San Clemente Times stick to the local stuff.

The New Year Has a Lot on the New City Council’s Plate

T

he new year of 2017 looks to be a busy year for San Clemente. With the 2016 election cycle fresh behind us, we turn to focus on city business in the works and coming down the pike. Our first City Council meeting of the new year included everything from presenting a commendation to the San Clemente High School Tritons Football Team for winning the CIF Division A-1 State Championship to a review of the City’s Code of Ethics policies.

In our only January meeting for this year, we signed off on the completion of the Ole Hanson Beach Club contract, reviewed the first Matrix study for Code Compliance, Development Engineering, Planning Division and business license functional areas, and were presented with the design work for our new San Clemente Trolley, which received approval by City Council.

The trolley has been an idea that our city has had for decades, and now, thanks to a grant from the Orange County Transportation Authority, we are looking to have this free-to-ride transport rolling on our streets during the summer and holidays starting Memorial Day weekend.

It will run from the Metro Station at North Beach south and connect many of our venues and businesses. The current stops include the Outlets at San Clemente, various spots on El Camino Real and Del Mar and the Pier.

At the Movies: Some OscarWorthy Considerations

he 2017Academy Award nominations are out and movie fans are quickly checking to see which films they’ve already seen and which they still need to see. The race for Best Picture appears to be between La La Land and Moonlight, but of course there are dozens of other potential award winners to consider as well. One is Deepwater Horizon, which underperformed in theaters but managed to earn two nominations. Another is Hidden Figures, a financial hit with three nominations.

Horizon, currently on DVD and VOD, recalls the extensive BP oil explosion and spill in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez and Kate Hudson, the film is a visual masterpiece of special effects, editing and camera work. Academy Award nominations were deservedly given for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Editing. The best way to view Horizon would be on a screen bigger than a laptop or iPhone.

Figures still impressively manages to stay in the top five at the box office and most recently won Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Based on real events, the movie follows three black NASA employees, played by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe, who helped calculate important data for Project Mercury with both support and reluctance from different superiors. Nominated for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Spencer) and Best Adapted Screenplay, Figures is probably one of the softest films at the ceremony this year with a simple PG-friendly rating and enjoyment for all ages. Tucked inside the self-described “No. 1 dive bar” is a little-known gourmet wheelhouse, where chef Kevin Cahalan serves his unique take on bar food. Part of his repertoire is the daily “blue plate” special, which includes various dishes created by the chef.

The diver scallops were the feature of the day last Saturday. They were pan-seared and surrounded by toasted couscous with sweet potatoes, tart pickled onions and savory bits of bacon—they were all unified under the guidance of a red wine reduction.

It’s an interesting combination that isn’t bashful about promoting each ingredient to its full potential. The homespun development of flavor in the vegetables provided a foundation on which the scallops could star,

Stressed Teens: Why the Rise in Anxiety?

I

n a recent TIME magazine article, “Teen Depression and Anxiety: Why the Kids Are Not Alright,” Susan Schrobbsdorff writes, “In my dozens of conversations with teens, parents, clinicians and school counselors across the country, there was a pervasive sense that being a teenager today is a draining full-time job that includes doing schoolwork, managing a social-media identity and fretting about career, climate change, sexism, racism—you name it.

As teens shift from parental to peer approval as a guiding force in their life, they face a certain amount of anxiety over the possibility of being misinterpreted or disliked. Youth spend hours perfecting their online image and then may develop mental health symptoms when their social media profile does not match their inner reality. This alternate reality is demanding to maintain and can lead to a teen not feeling good about who they truly are.

What can you do?

Parents can help and should persist in calming adolescent concerns, validating them and agreeing that growing up is scary. When our kids are pushing us away, they need our unconditional support even more, and it can be easier to minimize these feelings when a teen seems to be ignoring us and disregarding our advice.

Give it anyway; you would be surprised how much they take in and appreciate.

Encourage non-electronics time. Turn off the TV, get outdoors, read a real book and follow passions outside of technology.

Make sure your kids observe you engaging in other activities and witness you modeling appropriate technology use: do not bring the phone to the dinner table and put the phone to charge at 8 p.m. And, if your child seems to be so stressed that it is interfering with their ability to attend school, participate in activities with the family or peers, or isolating from others, please seek professional help. Your pediatrician, health care provider or the Wellness & Prevention Center can provide you with resources.

Perhaps you and your child can learn more about mindfulness meditation. Medical professionals are recommending mindfulness strategies to help people of every age reduce stress, depression and anxiety.

be present in the here and now. Most of us spend about 47 percent of our time thinking about something other than what we are doing. When our mind wanders, we tend to get stuck on judgmental thoughts and lose sight of what is important to our core values, and we perform poorly on the task at hand. This inner tension and reduced performance results in stress and symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The Wellness & Prevention Center is partnering with Mission Hospital to provide a six-week series on “Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction for Teens” with Dr. Stacie Cooper. This course is recommended for teens from ages 12 to 16 and builds skills to help kids deal with the stresses of growing up in a complicated world. This workshop is an evidencebased curriculum that helps young people recognize and manage their emotions, handle challenging situations, and lay the foundation for positive relationships and academic success. The course starts on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. at San Clemente High School and weekly for five more Tuesdays. There is a $40 fee plus a $20 materials fee and you can register by calling 877.459.3627 (scholarships available).

Want to know more about the teen brain and anxiety?

Anxiety is one of the earliest developing mental health diagnoses simply due to brain development. The area of the brain that processes fear develops much sooner than the pre-frontal cortex, the area that controls reasoning and logic. Teens have an increased capacity for fear and panic without the ability to process the threat.

As parents, we have all spent time calming the fears of our young children and sometimes we forget that our adolescents still need soothing as well.

Scientists at Michigan State University define this as a move from an internal sense of control to an external sense of control as more parts of the teen identity are validated by sources the child cannot self-regulate. Today’ teens and young adults feel like they have little control over their fate compared to youth in past decades.

OBITUARY

Edith F. Nelson Edith Nelson, 96, passed away on January 11, 2017 at her home.

She was born December 26, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating from college, she taught first grade then became a stewardess for United Airlines.

She married Orvis Nelson who founded Transocean Air Lines. Their family grew with the addition of their children but Edith still managed to travel: She met Elvis Presley in Paris, curtsied before the Queen of England, drank Kava with the King of Tonga, and charmed the Shah.

They moved to San Clemente in 1971. She returned to teaching and was a member of many local

organizations. She was a 10 year member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol for the San Clemente Police Department.

Widowed in 1976, she travelled the world with her children and grandchildren: Kenya, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, France, Costa Rica...

She is survived by her children (Holly Nelson Veale, Sue Carol Nelson, Marcus Orvis Nelson and Jeffrey Lee Nelson), eight grandchildren (Marc Veale, Cara Coniglio, Lisa Pedral, Jay Nelson, Daniel Veale, Nya Nelson, Beth Karcher and Morgan Nelson) and 14 great grandchildren.

Seeing the Future Local drummer Rory Burns to try out for television show ‘America’s Got Talent’

I

t’s difficult enough to try to master any instrument, but Rory Burns has done so without being able to see the sheet music. Burns is blind in one eye and has minimal vision in the other.

“I’ve always had really good hearing. I taught myself all by ear. I never learned how to read music because of my eyesight,” Burns said. “It was all by listening by ear, which is probably the gift.”

Burns, who goes by the stage name “RooStar,” grew up in San Clemente and graduated from San Clemente High School in 2003. He said he was placed in special education classes because his eyesight hindered his ability to learn.

“I just tried to challenge myself and did the best I could,” Burns said. “I was told that I couldn’t do things, but no one can tell me that. Only I can tell myself that. If I love something that I’m doing and I’m really good at it, I might as well chase the dream.”

On Friday, Feb. 3, Burns will take the first step in following his dreams of becoming a professional drummer by trying out for the TV show America’s Got Talent, a program that showcases talented people who make it through a nationwide open audition.

rock, hip-hop and heavy rock songs.

“The kind of music I like is, basically, everything,” Burns said, adding he is influenced by drummers such as Travis Barker of Blink-182, as well as Linkin Park. “I also have to say my little brother (inspires me) because he loves the drums and he’s only 5 years old,” Burns said. “There might be another drummer in the family; you never know.”

Burns said he has been playing the drums for about 28 years.

“Everybody I talked to said I had a talent,” Burns said. “I was getting good at the drums, and so I decided to sign up for it.”

Burns isn’t in a band right now, but he said he does write some of his own music, mostly poetry, which he writes copiously.

Currently, Burns said he is unemployed because of his eyesight, but he would like to make some form of music his full-time profession. He said he hopes it will motivate other people who have similar disabilities.

“I hope it inspires people. That’s what my main goal is,” Burns said. “No matter how hard you have difficulties with disabilities and challenges in life, no matter how hard it is, you can always chase your dreams. The only person who can stop you or say, ‘No’ is yourself.” SC

Fencing Phenom Q&A with standout fencer and Yale commit Francesca Fedorovsky

rancesca Fedorovsky grew up playing every sport imaginable—soccer, basketball, karate and figure skating were a few she tried. But none of those sports resonated with her, and it wasn’t until she picked up a sabre and gave fencing a try that she found her calling.

After seven years of training and traveling the world competing at the highest level, Fedorovsky, a senior at San Clemente High School, will soon call New Haven, Connecticut, her home. Fedorovsky is committed to fence for Yale and was one of 20 San Clemente student-athletes that took part in a National Signing Day ceremony on campus on Feb. 1 to commemorate the achievement.

San Clemente Times: How did you get into fencing?

Francesca Fedorovsky: My dad used to fence, and I just wanted to try every sport. I finally go to fencing and realized

SCT: You competed against a college team when you were that young? How’d you do?

Water Polo Sweeps Chargers

The San Clemente girls water polo team swept the season-series against rival El Toro on Jan. 31 following an 8-6 win.

Freshman Caroline Christl and senior Tera Richardson both scored a game-high three goals in the win. The Tritons held a 6-4 advantage at the half, and kept the lead the rest of the way. Goalie Victoria Reardon recorded nine saves.

San Clemente (12-10, 6-0 league) has won four games in a row, and sits firmly atop the South Coast League standings.

February 1 marked the day that 20 San Clemente High School student-athletes had been looking forward to for a long time. The 20 Tritons were able to sign San Clemente Times January February 2-8, 2017

on the team were 6-foot-5. I was just this tiny 11 year old (laughs). I did well.

SCT: What is it about fencing that you enjoy?

FF: How competitive it is. Most other sports it’s with a team. What I love about fencing is it’s all about you. If you’re having a great day, then it will reflect. If you’re having a bad day, you can change it yourself. I just like how direct it was, how individual it was.

SCT: Your travel schedule is not like that of a normal high school sport. How’d you manage all the travel?

FF: At first it was scary having to miss so much school. I eventually got used to it. Last year I traveled to four international events, and five national cups. Just missing so much school your junior year is so hectic. I was here for the first week of school, then gone the week after because I had to be in Poland. Then I was back a week and gone another. It’s just really difficult to balance everything but it’s totally possible.

SCT: What are your thoughts on joining the team at Yale?

FF: It’s definitely an up-and-coming team. They just got two new amazing coaches, and we’re getting some really great recruits. What I loved about Yale is that I’d get to start from the beginning and really be active in the team.

The Tritons, the defending league champions, distanced themselves from the rest of the pack by pulling out a 50-48 victory over visiting Aliso Niguel on Jan. 27.

San Clemente (15-8, 4-1) now sits one game clear of second-place Trabuco Hills (12-11, 3-2). The Tritons and Mustangs were scheduled to play on Feb. 1. Results were not available at press time.

The Tritons built up a comfortable 34-16 lead against the Wolverines at the half, but were outscored 32-16 down the stretch.

With two games remaining on its schedule, the San Clemente girls basketball team will have to win out and hope that first-place Aliso Niguel falters down the stretch if the Tritons are to claim the league hardware.

San Clemente (14-10, 4-2) trails the Wolverines by two games in the South Coast League.

The Tritons bounced back after a 64-40 loss at the hands of Aliso Niguel on Jan. 26 by trouncing San Juan Hills on the road 65-49 on Jan. 31. San Clemente’s Ella Dardiner and Shae Waters scored 15 and 11 points, respectively. The Tritons will host El Toro on Feb. 2.

Girls Soccer Set for Showdown with Wolverines

The third-place San Clemente girls soccer team will host first-place Aliso Niguel in a pivotal South Coast League match on Feb. 2. The Tritons lost their first meeting against the Wolverines 5-0 on Jan. 17, and Aliso Niguel has not lost since Dec. 28.

Langland Lands Gold at X Games

Historic trick puts local snowboarder on the podium

W

ith 20 seconds left in the women’s Big Air event finals at X Games Aspen, the youngest snowboarder on the mountain provided the biggest moment.

Hailey Langland, a 16-year-old San Clemente native, landed a cab double cork 1080, which is three full rotations mid-air.

Langland, who became the first female athlete to ever land the trick in any event

at X Games, scored 49 out of a possible 50 points, which vaulted her into first place on Jan. 26.

Langland stood in seventh position before her final run with a combined score of 32 and ended up winning the gold medal by two points.

The medal was Langland’s second time on the podium at X Games Aspen. In 2016, she won the bronze medal in the slopestyle event. SC

Ranked fourth in the world, Kolohe Andino still has the heart of a grom

here’s some great talent coming out of San Clemente, and I see a bright future in all of these kids,” said Kolohe Andino.

Last week, as part of the Hurley Surf Club program, Andino and friends Jeremy Carter and Ian Craine organized a last-minute surprise for the kids on the Shorecliffs Middle School surf team.

“Two days before the event, we hit up coach Dave Hennings to see if any of his kids would be interested,” explained Carter. “He called me back the next morning and said he had 60 kids signed up.”

Originally Andino had secured the use of a bus from his sponsor, Red Bull, to shuttle the young surfers from San Clemente to Hurley’s headquarters in Costa Mesa, but with such a positive response, they had to ask for a second bus.

“He printed up T-shirts for all the kids and handed them out,” continued Carter.

“We marked the color of one of them, and then during the night we gave one of Kolohe’s boards away. Coach Henning’s nephew ended up winning it, so that was kind of a cool coincidence.”

The evening featured a lecture by Andino during which he touched upon his days as an up-and-coming grommet in San Clemente, what it’s taken him to climb to being ranked number four in the world and the state of American surfing.

Killer Dana Surf Shop Returns to Original Owners

here’s a lot to be said for keeping the business of surfing in the hands of surfers. Everything just kind of works out better when the lunatics are allowed to run the asylum.

Before the financial upheaval of 2008, the surf industry had grown bloated and oversized. It was promptly humbled; hundreds lost their jobs and “brick and mortar” surf shops were particularly hard hit as the downward trend coincided with a mass influx of online sales. But in recent years, as the business of wave riding has bounced back, it’s become abundantly clear that staying small and nimble has its advantages.

Enter Killer Dana Surf Shop in Dana Point. Last week, the original owners, Gary Wright, Chris “Ralphie” Andrews and Steve “Lounge” Price, took back ownership of their hallowed retail space.

“It’s just a grassroots, locally owned surf shop—just like when we started almost 30 years ago,” said Ralphie.

Wright originally opened Killer Dana in 1991 with $11,500 that he scraped together through saving, unloading a used car and a small bank loan. The first shop was about 800 square feet, had about 20 new boards on the rack, one case of surf wax and some miscellaneous clothes and accessories. Ralphie—who’d worked with Wright at the Chart House—joined Killer Dana about a year later. Price was added to the roster in 1996 to help with mail and new online orders.

At its height, Killer Dana had additional shops in San Clemente and Lake Forest. Those have been shuttered as Wright and company are excited to focus solely on the town that’s already given them all so much.

“We’re the new old owners, I guess that’s a good way to put it,” laughed Ralphie. “With all of the renovation going on in Dana Point and all of the growth in the area, we’re really excited to be jumping back into this on our terms.” SC

Mellem… they were all surfing right next to me. Then our crew started coming up,” said Andino. “I have so many friends, tons of friends, just competing down there. Who could be the first one out, that kind of stuff.

We were crazy competitive, and we’re also crazy good friends. And now you have all these little rats frothing out in the mornings… taking all my waves [laughs].”

Besides the 60 “rats” from Shorecliffs, there were nearly 300 others on hand to listen and learn from Andino. Women’s world champion Carissa Moore also offered up some wit and wisdom. And the quarterback of NCAA National Champion Clemson University, Deshaun Watson, also showed up.

He’s apparently been hanging in Dana Point and training for his impending NFL career.

“When you’re super young and you have good surfers to look up to and that are surfing right next to you, it definitely motivates you and pushes you,” said Andino when asked why so many surfers seem to come out of his hometown. “There’s breeding grounds around the world, like Snapper Rocks in Australia, but I think having those guys to look up to and be that close to is rad.”

In less than a month, Andino will set off on the WSL Championship Tour to hopefully vie for a world title, but whether he wins it all or stumbles somewhere along the way, there’s no doubt the kids back home have his back one hundred percent. SC Page 30

here are kids that seem to somehow always end up in the spotlight. Then there are the grinders—the ones that work tirelessly and dedicate themselves to their passion. David Economos falls into the latter category.

At the end of 2016, he broke the seal with a first-ever win in the NSSA Open Men’s division at 54th Street. That was just the start of more good things to come.

Feeling perfectly comfortable in his own backyard at Salt Creek, he took third this past weekend in the Under 18 division at the Surfing America Prime contest. He’s climbed up to eighth place on the Surfing America ratings, with fellow South Orange County surfers Cole Houshmand, Crosby Colapinto and Kade Mason also near the top of the charts.

The competitive surf season is just starting to fire back up again after a mid-winter break, and with momentum on his side as of late, Economos appears to be on a bit of a roll.

“It seems like he’s gaining some rhythm going into the start of the junior pro series that starts up next month,” said his coach Jeremy Carter. “It’s exciting to see all the hard work paying off.”
