Five things San Clemente should know this week Jim Johnson Memorial Sports Park Nears Completion THE LATEST: City Council on Tuesday approved additional barriers along the northwest side of Jim Johnson Memorial Sports Park, which will include 10-foot-tall decorative fencing about 13 feet behind the soccer goals.

The duration of the upgrade will take about six to eight weeks, according to city staff reports, and will cost more than $96,000.

City Council also approved an increase to the contracted maintenance services for the park. E. Stewart and Associates was awarded a $121,000 contract to maintain the park until June 30, 2018 and another $30,000 for restroom maintenance.

WHAT’S NEXT: The park was originally expected to open this spring, but no update to the opening day was given at the meeting. The park includes two synthetic turf soccer fields, one natural turf field, a playground, restroom facilities and a basketball court. —EH

SONGS Hearing: How We Got Here, Where it Could Go THE LATEST: Citizens Oversight, an activist group based in San Diego, is making what could be the last push to halt the burial of spent nuclear fuel at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

Southern California Edison (SCE), the majority stakeholder of SONGS, was granted a permit by the California Coastal Commission in October 2015 to start the process of burying the fuel as early as this year. Shortly thereafter, Citizens Oversight filed a lawsuit to have the permit revoked.

In their lawsuit, the litigants imply that because SCE could not be trusted with the steam generators that failed and ultimately led to the plant’s closure, they should not be the stewards of the fuel. The lawsuit is against the Coastal Commission’s permit.

They also contend the canisters that were accepted by SONGS officials to store the fuel are not safe and could lead to disaster.

The major issue that neither side can deny is that the fuel currently has nowhere to go.

In President Donald Trump’s blueprint budget, which was released two weeks ago, the president calls for $120 million to reincarnate licensing for storing spent nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, where the fuel was originally planned to be stored.

This is a controversial move as former Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) worked diligently to remove Yucca Mountain from being a potential storage site.

Legislation at the federal level is still in limbo, as Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista) has once again submitted a bill that would amend the Nuclear Waste Policy Act to allow for interim storage. His co-sponsor on the bill, Rep. Tim Conway, represents a district in Texas that could be home to such a storage facility.

All that said, if the license is voided, then the fuel will sit in the cooling tanks where it is currently housed, a location SONGS officials said is more dangerous than the dry-cask storage.

WHAT’S NEXT: It’s somewhat nebulous what will happen to the spent fuel if the judge denies the legitimacy for the permit to store it onsite. When asked, Maureen Brown, the media liaison for SCE, said the utility does not comment on pending litigation.

Local Band Performs on Top of Mt. Kilimanjaro to Raise Awareness of Ivory Poaching THE LATEST: Tunnel Vision, a rock band based out of San Clemente, recorded a music video at the top of Tanzania’s Mt. Kilimanjaro in February in an effort to bring more awareness to ivory poaching around the world.

Tunnel Vision members Hayden Hanson, Jacob Hernandez, Matthew Risley and Tanner Payan, as well as Daniel Delacruz of Slightly Stoopid, who performed with them, were recognized at City Council on Tuesday night.

According to the band members, they set world records for a live-stream performance at the highest elevation and the highest-elevated saxophone live-stream performance.

Band members said performing at the summit of the mountain was very difficult, due to the thin air at almost 20,000 feet and having to schlep all the equipment up with them. However, they said the sound from their performance carried all the way down to the base camp, and people told them they could hear the music from the base.

“We played four songs at the summit, and we did it to raise awareness of the poaching of elephants,” Hernandez said during the meeting. “It was just a miracle that we could get everything up there.

Every step of the way down.”

Elephants are being killed at a rate of 40,000, or 3 percent, of their population each year, according to a 2014 study by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.

“It was kind of brought to us by our record label, Whiskey Barrel Records, and the idea behind it is that we’ve always given about 40 percent of the proceeds to foundations,” Hanson said. “We’re working with the George Lopez Foundation and Tom Maxwell, the owner, and he kind of showed us what was going on. We were really touched by it, and it’s pretty brutal what’s going on there in Tanzania. We were just really bummed out, and people are losing their lives trying to protect these elephants, and we want future generations to see these animals.”

WHAT’S NEXT: The band’s next performance in San Clemente is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 13, at the San Clemente Fiesta Music Festival. The band will be releasing a single song in the near future, and the proceeds from sales on iTunes will be donated to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which makes efforts to combat climate change and help preserve animal species. Hayden said they will consider going to the Himalayan Mountains to do another fundraising opportunity for their philanthropies.

“This whole thing was so crazy that we’re just in chill mode right now,” Hayden said, adding they hope to have a new record out by July. —EH

Biggie’s Burgers Owner Looking for Sunrise Warriors THE LATEST: Richard Brown, owner of Biggie’s Burgers in San Clemente, is seeking military veterans who would like to own their own small burger shop.

Through the program Sunrise Warriors, Brown assists veterans looking to start their own enterprise.

Brown said he was inspired to create this personal program after a man he knew was killed in action in Afghanistan.

“What we do is we mentor you and take you under our wing,” Brown said. “A lot of these guys are getting out of the service in less than 20 years because they’re injured in some way.”

Brown said depending how well the store does, some of the owners could make a small fortune. He started his career with Taco Bell in the late 1960s, opening stores around California and eventually the rest of the United States.

Brown helped establish the first Taco Bell in San Clemente in 1967.

The program started in 2014, but it’s taken Brown and his current warriors some time to locate and acquire applicable land, submit for permitting and everything else that comes with starting a small restaurant.

All the restaurants will be replicas of the Biggie’s in San Clemente, Brown said, because it will be easier to train everyone.

The way it works is the veterans have to show they have enough start-up money to get the venture going, then Brown said he will invest in the business and help train the owner and general manager until the restaurant is running smoothly.

“In some cases, I will guarantee the trainee secures his lease,” Brown said.

Training takes about 30 days. Although Brown has stake in the business in the beginning, he intends to lower his equity year by year until the veteran is the sole owner.

A member of the Air Force, Brown was involved with refueling B-52 bombers in the Vietnam War and had enlisted for the Korean War.

What’s New at the Miramar?

Planning Commission could discuss application by early May

he plans to turn the Miramar Theater into a boutique restaurant hub and events center could come before the Planning Commission by mid-May, according to the man who has championed the project since last year.

Wayne Eggleston, who is himself a planning commissioner and will have to recuse himself when the proposal does come before the commission, said during a subcommittee meeting last week historic aspects of the plans were discussed.

“You can’t spend much time in there, and the mold is just awful; it’s not very healthy to go in there,” Eggleston said.

Eggleston said that there are still gorgeous features from the theater’s original construction, such as large support beams and lanterns within it.

In order to be considered for the National Registry of Historic Places, the developers will have to prove multiple items. Such things include what will be replaced, maintained or renovated, and Eggleston said they want to be able to foresee as many obstacles as possible to avoid running into problems, like what happened with the Ole Hanson Beach Club—a project in which the city went nearly $5 million over budget.

“Obviously (as a historic structure) we want to be exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (basic requirements) and in order to do that, we have to … cross our Ts and dot our Is. “I think it’s important to go after the

unity in opposition to the toll road, several members of the public implored City Council on Tuesday night to continue its efforts in blocking the Transportation Corridor Agencies’ (TCA) latest toll road proposals through San Clemente.

Since last summer, when the TCA debuted its latest ideas for possible toll roads through, around or near San Clemente, many residents have been up in arms about what could be. Some of the proposals would wind through what appear to be open space areas of San Clemente, through the canyons and down to Avenida Pico; another cuts through the Shorecliffs community in two separate outlets.

San Clemente resident Dustine Rey said she was afraid of the effects heavy exhaust

from traffic on the toll roads would have on the air quality in the city. Rey said laws have been passed that no schools can be built by highways and that she is concerned by reports she’s read about the health effects children face when living near them.

Council member Steve Swartz said he would like to lobby to make OCTA’s upcoming midterm investment study, which looks at various projects throughout the county, to include prioritizing arterial routes, something that in theory could make a toll road obsolete.

Mayor Kathy Ward said she would like to see the process expedited to include San Clemente’s plans.

Council member Lori Donchak said people in homeowners associations or neighborhood community organizations should gather to study the proposals, especially if they bisect certain areas of town.

Donchak said she will provide timelines for the plan update to the City Council in the near future.

Many people have been proposing revisiting the “beltway” alternative, which would have traffic flowing in east and west directions rather than directly through San Clemente. Some of the developments in South Orange County since it was first introduced have made the original plans no longer feasible.

SCHS Dance Team Wins Three National Titles in One Night It was a weekend of firsts for the San Clemente High School Dance Team during the United Spirit Association’s (USA) National Championship competition in Long Beach. The team won three firstplace National Championship titles and a first runner-up Grand National Champion banner, making Saturday night the most successful national championship competition in the program’s history.

The last time San Clemente won a national championship was in 2013.

SCHS competed in three categories at the USA National Championships. The team’s preliminary scores from Friday and Saturday morning placed them in the top 30 percent for the intermediate, large lyrical and novelty dance categories, and thus advanced in the competition. The team danced in the medium hip-hop and small dance categories as well, but those dances did not qualify for the finals.

San Clemente competed against Carlsbad and Rancho Bernardo in the finals before being awarded a national championship in intermediate. In the novelty division, only Newberry Park and San Clemente scored high enough to compete in the finals, with San Clemente taking home the championship. And in large lyrical, San Clemente went head-to-head against Saugus in the finals and took first place.

In addition, San Clemente qualified for the Grand National Championship, which requires teams to compete in four different dance categories. The Grand Champion is awarded to the team with the highest combined score overall. San Clemente received the first runner-up Grand National Championship with a score slightly below Valencia, which took home the overall title.

The team will host their annual spring concert titled “Salvation” on Friday and Saturday, April 28 and 29. This will be the community’s only opportunity to see the national championship dances outside of competition. Hailing from Antwerp, Belgium, SMOK is internationally acclaimed and known for spray painting hyper-realistic figures, including portraits of animals and other figures on walls throughout Europe.

“SMOK is well-known among artists in Belgium, and it is our sincere hope that his time here in the States, and greater exposure to his artwork, will put him among the top street artists in the world,” said Joshua Host, co-chair of the Street Artist in Residence program.

SMOK is a living legend in the Belgium street art scene. In the 1980s and ’90s, he built a name for unsanctioned street art and lettering in Antwerp and Brussels.

“SMOK is an alchemist,” Host said. “He is able to transform walls into three-dimensional works of art. His residency, albeit short, should be nothing short of magic.”

SMOK is the third artist to join the burgeoning Street Artist in Residence program, following in the footsteps of Francisco Camilo, from Portugal, and Remio, from Norway.

The artist will be based at the House of Trestles, though he’ll be creating works of art on walls throughout Southern California over the next month.

“I want to develop my L.A. style,” SMOK said. “Think massive monochrome animals with fluorescent flash.”

The blood drive will take place 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, April 14, at San Clemente High School’s Triton Center, located at 700 Avenido Pico.

Donors must be 17 and older, but 16-yearolds can participate with parental consent, and they must weigh at least 114 pounds and be in “good health,” a press release stated. It is recommended that donors consume an adequate meal and plenty of fluids prior to giving. A photo identification must be presented upon signing up to donate.

Locker Board Makes Its Way to the White House Carson Kropfl, the 11-year-old San Clemente inventor of the cubby-sized skateboards known as Locker Boards, received a letter from the office of President Donald Trump recently, letting him know the office received the board he sent to Trump’s son, Barron.

“When I got home from school and saw the package from the White House, I was really excited and kind of nervous,” Kropfl said. “I read the letter three times. It made me so happy that President Trump said he was impressed with my craftsmanship and business spirit.”

Carson said he has made a lot of skateboards in four months.

“I’ve been working really hard, so it was cool to have the president acknowledge my work,” Kropfl said. “I hope that I get to see Barron Trump riding my Locker Board skateboard around the White House. That would be legit.”

The forum, which will take place at the Saddleback College Campus, Room SSC 212, will feature keynote speaker Beth MacLean, executive vice president and bank loan portfolio manager in the Newport Beach office of PIMCO, a global investment management firm. The forum will include a panel discussion with successful women in the fields of business, science and the community. Nearing Final Approval, Trader Joe’s Eyes September Opening in San Juan Capistrano

Trader Joe’s is one step closer to becoming a reality in San Juan Capistrano.

On March 28, members of the city’s Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve a conditional use permit for the store’s alcohol sales. The commission is also recommending that the City Council issue a letter of public convenience or necessity for the project on April 4—the last city approval Trader Joe’s needs in order to sell alcohol at the site.

Trader Joe’s is set to occupy the former Big Lots space in the Mission Village Center, located at 32151 Camino Capistrano.

Proposed hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily with a staff of 15 to 35 people depending on the season.

The store has already received administrative approval from the city for minor exterior enhancements such as replacing swing doors with automatic sliding doors and other ADA improvements. The city is currently reviewing those proposed improvement plans.

Peter Impala, of Art Rodriguez & Associates, spoke on behalf of Trader Joe’s at Tuesday’s commission meeting. Impala said that after five years of looking for a space in San Juan Capistrano, Trader Joe’s is “very excited about this location.” He added that they anticipate opening the store in September.

Joel Rojas, director of development services, said that staff applied the city’s required parking standard and counted spaces at the site to ensure that there is adequate parking.

“Whether Trader Joe’s is so successful

that they have more parking need than even our code says they should have, well we can’t do anything about that,” Rojas said.

The parking requirement for Trader Joe’s is 74 spaces, compared to 59 stalls for the previous Big Lots. Staff said the Mission Village Center provides 141 spaces in total.

Dana Point Resident Earns Eagle Scout Rank by Providing Motivation to Others

Dylan Lam is not your average 12-yearold. The Marco Forster student has recently completed his Eagle Scout project by making a local lacrosse center more motivational.

Dylan’s project consisted of hanging inspirational banners along the walls— which were designed by Dylan—hanging flags of various colleges with good lacrosse programs, and installing sun shades at Victory Lacrosse Center in San Juan Capistrano.

“This is where I started playing lacrosse,” Dylan said, adding that he enjoyed it because he was able to help the community.

“It was more fun than work,” Dylan said.

The process took about 10 months and Dylan had to raise more than $5,000.

He set up a page on GoFundMe, took in recyclables and sold beef jerky sticks to raise funds.

When asked what they thought of their son wanting to acheive Eagle Scout at an early age, Dylan’s parents said they laughed.

“It’s one of those things that’s a big goal and a huge undertaking,” said Duke Lam, Dylan’s father. “We tracked his progress, and it was cool to see the progress he was making toward his Eagle rank. As parents, we’re really proud.” —Kristina Pritchett

Letters to the Editor TCA AT IT AGAIN ENRIQUE ROMERO, San Clemente

Neighbors, the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) is at it again. Residents need to keep saying no to all TCA proposals going through our town. We don’t want the Toll Road pains, which include congestion, crime, economic blight, noise, pollution, traffic and more. No one wants a juggernaut going right through our town.

The only viable options are to connect to I-5 north or south of San Clemente.

The best option for residents not wanting any of the Toll Road pains mentioned above is to go through Camp Pendleton and connect to the I-5 in Oceanside like other roads have done throughout the country.

I read with sadness that cigarette butts are littering our beautiful beaches and walk paths.

I have traveled the world and find our pristine city by the sea to be one of most beautiful places I have ever seen.

Hiking the stunningly gorgeous Sea Summit Trails, I also find unusual amounts of dog deposits left on the side of the trail by irresponsible dog owners. It is a crying shame to add to the environmental trashing of our home and our little planet.

Remember, we only have one of those in this universe to leave behind for our children. Let us be a little more responsible and better stewards.

The good news about the idea of burying 3.6 million pounds of nuclear waste at SONGS is that we can soon look forward to surfing at night, under the soft glow of the “warm” waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

SCE IS TAKING CORRECT STEPS IN DECOMMISSIONING THOMAS PALMISANO, vice president of decommissioning and chief nuclear officer of Southern California Edison

I appreciate this opportunity to share information about Southern California Edison’s (SCE) plans to decommission the San Onofre nuclear plant, and continue to safely store the plant’s used nuclear fuel.

Elected officials and community leaders in Southern California have been actively

involved in public discussions the past three years to find ways to expedite the removal of the used fuel from San Onofre.

SCE fully supports these efforts, which include proposed Consolidated Interim Storage (CIS) facilities in Texas and New Mexico that have broad-based support in those states. Congressional leaders of both parties are working to provide funding for these facilities, as well as the long-delayed federal repository for used nuclear fuel at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

Contrary to a letter to the editor published in the March 23-29 edition of the San Clemente Times, CIS is clearly a potential option for San Onofre. The mischaracterization about CIS is one of several errors in the letter, and I would like to address a few of them: • Dry cask storage of used nuclear fuel has been proven to be safe, with more than 30 years of operation in the U.S. with no radiological releases.

• The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) currently requires that we inspect dry storage facilities, and will require more specific inspections of the individual canisters after the first 20 years of operation. SCE has already taken the first step by committing to submit an inspection and maintenance plan to state regulators by 2022 for the new dry storage facility.

• Because used fuel assemblies at San Onofre have cooled for so long, they would not spontaneously catch fire if exposed to air, a conclusion affirmed by the NRC. • San Onofre was originally designed to withstand a 7.0 earthquake, and later evaluations showed the plant could withstand 7.5, a fact that was publicly discussed at a Feb. 16 Community Engagement Panel (CEP) meeting.

San Onofre’s dry storage facilities are built to withstand a substantially greater magnitude quake than the nuclear plant.

• New research discussed at the CEP meeting by Dr. Neal Driscoll of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography affirms that the tsunami risk on the coast near San Onofre is low because the underwater geographic characteristics offshore form a natural baffle, which would blunt the energy if a tsunami approached the shore.

Emergency preparedness changes were made at San Onofre because potential accidents related to an operating plant are no longer possible here and the used fuel has cooled sufficiently. These changes were reviewed and approved by the NRC in 2015.

The above issues regarding safety, security and storage of used nuclear fuel are routinely discussed at quarterly meetings of the Community Engagement Panel.

so we can work together to achieve common goals, including relocating San Onofre’s used fuel. Please join us for the next CEP meeting on May 11 in Laguna Hills.

BELTWAY PROPOSAL HAS BEEN LONG IGNORED JERRY COLLAMER, San Clemente

A whole bunch of other concerned South County residents, with a lot of help from top-level Caltrans officers tutoring us on the ways of the road, and I originally came to the Beltway solution.

Yes, it’s a bold idea. But Orange County Transportation Authority’s (OCTA) workshop consultants wouldn’t have priced it or recommended it to OCTA if it didn’t have merit. Fortunately, we got it filed with OCTA. We’d passed out our Beltway books to every South County city council, county supervisors, planning commissioners, etc.

But that was eight years ago.

Fact is, the Beltway kept getting mentioned like some mysterious secret. But it took a San Juan Capistrano City Council member to dig it up.

Apparently, she’d gotten ahold of one of our 8-year-old Beltway books. Not surprising, as we’d handed out so many.

The Beltway today would be different from eight years ago. Retired Supervisor Campbell’s worry—that the massive Rancho development (not approved at the time) would handicap its implementation—is now true. But with smart adaptation, a version can still be built.

SHAMEFUL BEHAVIOR GEORGE GREGORY, San Clemente

San Clemente still seems to only write tickets for street sweeping parking violations to the folks that live in the northern, multifamily areas of town, and everyone else gets a pass, why?

I observed two cars on the whole block in the northern part of town whose owners forgot to move and were issued tickets. I was in the southern part of town and observed more than six cars on a very short block get no ticket, why? Are our car tires dirtier than theirs or do we just discriminate against blue-collar and renter families?

I’d like everyone to remember the last six words of the pledge of allegiance: “with liberty and justice for all,” or shall we change it to liberty for some in San Clemente and not for all?

I ask City Council to agendize this and other shameful snob laws in our community. Please, let’s be fair.

City Keeps its Eyes on the Street

F

eeling safe, day or night, is the basic requirement of a strong community.

And all of us have a role to play.

Urban planner Jane Jacobs coined the term “eyes on the street” as a key quality of a successful community. Her idea was that if we self-police and bear witness to activity around us, good community values will prevail.

In 2016, San Clemente City Council hired Matrix Consulting Group to analyze city public safety needs. While San Clemente is deemed one of the safest communities in the state, the study proposed more than 50 recommendations that, in the spirit of continuous improvement, will further strengthen our public safety track record.

Action items range from police staffing changes and better police presence on weekends and evenings, to faster case closure on criminal investigations.

For example, issues at the Ocean View Plaza were reported by citizens that caused Lt. Dave Moodie to form the public safety effort TRIP, which stands for Targeting Reduction Investigation Prevention. At Ocean View Plaza, the TRIP team has employed tactics to deal with issues such as public intoxication and other disturbances that affect the customer experience in the shopping center.

Matrix recognizes the high value of TRIP and encourages deeper community communication to optimize TRIP as a tool to prevent crime. TRIP is also recommended for strategic summer use when our population surges.

Community-based crime prevention plays an essential role in high-quality-oflife cities like San Clemente and assumes many forms. Matrix highlighted the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) as a unique asset and key San Clemente strength. Founded in 1985, it is the second longest tenured program of its kind in the nation. Currently, we have 34 RSVPs who perform vacation house checks, “You Are San Clemente Times April 6–12, 2017

Not Alone” checks, parking patrol, special event traffic control and other community crime-prevention activities. They provide an invaluable service and are a perfect illustration of eyes on the street. Crime prevention is everyone’s business. As residents, we can take steps to reduce/remove the opportunity for crime and make our community safer. Here are a few: • Use automatic timers at home to come on at various times of the day.

• Have adequate, low-level lighting blanketing the perimeter of your home at night, especially using motion lights.

• Ask a neighbor to watch your home while you are away and pick up fliers or newspapers.

• Have mail stopped until your return.

• Have a well-managed landscape.

• When out for the evening, leave lights on to give the appearance that someone is home.

• Lock doors and be sure windows are shut/locked, even when you leave home for just a few minutes.

• Always lock the car and conceal valuables.

The city is moving quickly to take steps to make San Clemente safer. Local problems that are the result of state government actions and elections, such as Assembly Bill 109 as well as Props 47 and 57, are game-changers and feed into the action items Matrix challenges us to address. Soon, in addition to a strategic master plan for community safety, you can expect better communication in the form of regular town hall meetings and other progress reports.

Finally, stay tuned for the formation of a public safety task force, also recommended in the Matrix study. City Council will be deliberating on this in April.

At the Movies: ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife’ Deserves More

essica Chastain and cute zoo animals feels like a good enough combination to get movie fans into the theaters. That’s certainly what the marketing for Focus Features’ new period piece The Zookeeper’s Wife would lead you to believe. The film is five years in the making as a somewhat passion project for Chastain, and the end result leaves a bit to be desired despite all the ingredients for success.

In 1939 Poland, Jan Zabinski (Johen Heldenbergh) and wife Antonina (Chastain) run

a very popular local zoo in Warsaw, where they live with their young son, Ryszard (Timothy Radford and Val Maloku). One fall evening, the zoo becomes one of many victims of the Nazi German bombings to overtake the country. Together, the family decides to use the remains of the zoo to not only save the animal survivors of the attacks, but also the Jewish targets. Antonina also manages to keep friendly alliances with German zoologist Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl).

The Zookeeper’s Wife starts off as almost a pro-animal rights feature, but then quickly

turns into the typical World War II drama we’ve seen before. Which is a shame because Heldenbergh does give a strong performance, and director Niki Caro has made quality dramas before. Angela Workman’s script should have had a lot of potential not only from Diane Ackerman’s original novel, but also the diaries of the real Antonina Zabinski. asino San Clemente was host to a lively medley of entertainers and performers on Friday, March 31, for the first San Clemente’s Got Talent competition.

Rotary Club, graced the stage to an audience of more than 100 people.

The winner, singer MacKenzie Wrap, won $1,000. Second place winners The Baker Canyon Boys won $250. And in third place, Lilah Jane Kopenhofer won $100.

Overall, the event is estimated to have raised $10,000 for local children’s charities and programs. SC

he Wellness & Prevention Center and San Clemente High School partnered with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Office of Traffic Safety to hold “Every 15 Minutes” at the high school for junior and senior students on March 28. The event was led by Brooke Harvey, a senior at San Clemente High School. I asked her to summarize the event for this month’s column: For the event, I encouraged three of my friends to pretend to die in a car accident. I asked these three, knowing their “deaths” would have an emotional impact on their family, friends, peers and teachers. When I started high school, I noticed there was a somewhat reckless and careless culture at San Clemente High School regarding drinking and driving. Many schools in the Capistrano Unified School District put on “Every 15 Minutes” every two years, but SCHS had not done so since 2009. I decided to research, plan and lead this event to educate the student body and the community of San Clemente about how one wrong decision to drive a car after drinking alcohol could affect the lives of so many.

On the day of the mock crash, a student was removed from their classroom every 15 minutes to symbolize the fact that one person dies every 15 minutes from an alcohol-related crash, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and CHP. Every 15 minutes during the school day, we rang a funeral bell and the grim reaper and a California Highway Patrol officer read a student obituary and escorted that student out of class to place their grave marker on the school lawn. After they were pulled out of class, the students lost contact with everyone (friends and family) for the remainder of that day until the assembly/mock-funeral we held the following morning for 1,600 of my classmates.

The 28 student participants spent the night at a retreat, away from friends and family, to reflect on the feelings brought on by being ripped away from the people we love most. This component of the Page 28

program was probably the most surreal aspect for the teens involved.

As part of the retreat, we wrote a letter to our parents as if we had died.

Many of us took this opportunity to thank our parents for the role they WELLNESS AND played in our lives. We PREVENTION

Many of us also took this time to apologize and reflect on the impact of a bad decision that left their parents in the difficult position of having lost a child. The parents of the participants also wrote letters to their child that were very emotional for the students to read.

I hope that this event continues every two years at San Clemente High School.

I hope the event and follow-up activities over the next several months will result in lowered rates of drinking and driving in San Clemente. Students at SCHS took the pledge to never drink and drive, and soon our “Every 15 Minutes” committee will ask San Clemente residents to take the pledge to never drink and drive.

I will be taking my pledge with me away to college as will many of my peers. Drinking and driving is a choice that leads to horrible outcomes. We are a community.

We are a family. And it is our responsibility to take care of one another and not take the life of another by making the wrong choice.

Brooke is a senior at San Clemente High School and has lived in San Clemente for about 10 years. She plans to study engineering at a four year university in the fall and cannot wait to start the next chapter of her life.

WEST COAST FC TEAM HEADED TO FAR WEST REGIONALS The West Coast Futbol Club’s Boys 1999 team punched its ticket to the Far West Regionals tournament in Seattle this summer following a first-place finish in the Cal South Regional League.

The local team, made up of players from San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, will travel to Seattle on June 19 and compete in the prestigious tournament that features the top club soccer teams on the West Coast.

The West Coast FC team locked up its first-place finish with a 3-1 win over Albion SC on April 2. The team recorded the strongest goal differential in its league by a wide margin, allowing just five goals while scoring 24 in eight matches.

Local players on West Coast FC Boys 1999 include: Trevor Denney, Braden Zines, Alberto Torres, Rhett Cook, Nick Aquino and Sam Guinane. The team is coached by Oliver Wyss.

state over the two-day event. Morales placed seventh in his division, and Stever placed eighth.

The tournament capped off successful seasons for both young grapplers, who had to qualify through multiple regional events to reach the SCWAY Championships. A highlight of the season for Morales and Stever came at the Orange County Championship tournament, where Stever placed first and Morales placed fourth. The high finishes qualified the two wrestler’s spot in the state championship.

Rugby Roots Local rugby club holds inaugural Karl Terrey Cup in honor of founder

T

he roots of organized youth rugby in the city of San Clemente can be traced back 13 years to the fields at Concordia Elementary. It was there that Australian transplant and longtime city resident Karl Terrey held his first official practices as coach of the newly formed San Clemente Youth Rugby club.

Terrey, who played the sport growing up just outside Sydney, had a team of 10 players on that first team. It was a good start for a beach community that knew little about the sport.

As the years went on, Terrey’s efforts attracted more and more players. The only other youth club teams were in Fullerton and San Diego, so San Clemente turned into the de facto hot spot for the sport in South Orange County. Terrey offered free after-school rugby tutorials at Concordia and eventually parlayed that into a scheduled course taught in conjunction with the city’s Recreation Department.

A rugby culture quickly began to form.

Now San Clemente Youth Rugby boasts over 180 players. The club, which plays under the name SC Gators, has also helped jumpstart four high school club programs. There are now student-run

Baseball Team Wins Anaheim Lions Tournament The San Clemente baseball team has been one of the hottest squads in Orange County over the past two weeks.

The Tritons (12-6, 2-2 league) have won their last six games, which included a first-place showing at the Anaheim Lions Tournament.

San Clemente began the tournament with a 6-0 shutout win over Arlington on March 25, then rattled off wins over Ayala, Reed, Simi Valley to reach the championship game.

San Clemente battled with Valencia in the title game on March 29, and held off the late-charging Tigers for a 6-5 victory.

clubs at San Clemente High School, Dana Hills, JSerra Catholic and San Juan Hills.

“It all started with Karl getting people exposed to and playing rugby,” San Clemente Triton Rugby founder Greg Foreman said. “He really was the catalyst, and he

spent a lot of his own time into getting this going.”

As a way to honor its founder, the club created the Karl Terrey Cup this season.

The Karl Terrey Cup is a three-game series featuring all of the high school

programs in the area. The San Clemente Tritons beat San Juan Hills in the deciding match earlier this season and will retain the cup until next year.

Like any non-traditional American sport, it took Southern California time to embrace the sport that is popular elsewhere in the country and around the world.

Other than its athletic appeal, the key to its popularity, Terrey knew, would be to show local sports fans the family-style culture that he believes is synonymous with rugby.

“I wanted to have a youth sport that was more than just turning up to a game just before it starts, play, eat a snack, and leaving,” Terrey said. “I missed the rugby culture and camaraderie and wanted the youth in San Clemente to experience it.”

Now when the Gators or high school clubs have matches, it is sometimes a day-long event. Family, friends and players hang out, eat, watch and play rugby at Vista Hermosa Sports Park for hours.

Terrey made it out to watch some of the high school club teams compete for the cup named in his honor this season and was impressed. The sport is thriving at the youth level, as every high school team carries between 30 and 40 players. Some even have enough members to field a junior varsity team.

“Having a legacy like this is an amazing honor and I was humbled by it. The success is not mine though. It belongs to all the players, coaches, referees and parents who have dedicated time to making the sport successful here in San Clemente. I just had the idea initially,” Terrey said. “It was more than I hoped for back in 2004.

Mike McGreevy came on in the pressurepacked seventh inning to record the final out and earn the save. Valencia chipped away at a 5-2 deficit and scored three runs in the final three innings but couldn’t complete the comeback.

San Clemente kept its momentum going on March 31 by defeating South Coast League rival Aliso Niguel 2-1 in extra innings. McGreevy pitched a complete game gem, allowing five hits over eight innings. Cole Asakowicz delivered a big RBI double in the win.

The win over Aliso marked the end of an incredibly busy first half of the season for San Clemente. The Tritons played in 11 games over a two-week span, recording an 8-3 record along the way.

Boys Lacrosse Takes Down Foothill in Heavyweight Tilt In a matchup of two perennially strong programs, the San Clemente and Foothill boys lacrosse teams went back-and-forth in a nonleague game on April 1. The Tritons took a lead in the third quarter and held on for a 9-8 win.

San Clemente (7-2, 4-0) held an early 2-0 advantage, but the teams entered the half tied 4-4. San Clemente took a one-goal lead in the third and responded to every Foothill goal until the end of the game.

San Clemente goalie Harrison Webb had a spectacular showing in the cage and recorded 17 saves. The Tritons got

production from all over the field on offense, led by Matt Keany’s two-goal, two-assist effort. David Howren and Josh Sanchez each had two goals and an assist, and Nick Lemus scored twice.

The Tritons, who sit atop the South Coast League standings, are spending their spring break competing in Nevada against Coronado Red and Palo Verde.

Annual Mongoose Cup comes to Dana Point Harbor this weekend

ack in the old days, before Instagram and Twitter handles stole our attention, the surf community was so small that everyone got a nickname. If you were a surfer coming out of the ’50s, you were given a name—some were heroic in nature, others, not so much. Greg Noll was famously “Da Bull” thanks to his largerthan-life persona and hearty physique. Dale Velzy went by the handle “Hawk.” And for decades now, Mickey Munoz has been known to friends and surfers around the world as the “Mongoose.”

The etymology of Mickey’s moniker harkens back to The Jungle Book. Originally published in 1894, author Rudyard Kipling included a short story in the publication titled “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi.” Billed as “the adventures of a valiant young mongoose,” the story revolves around a mongoose’s uncanny ability to outflank venomous cobras and overcome deadly odds with its cunning and smarts. The nickname is quite apropos.

Born in New York City in 1937 to an opera singer, Mickey shortly thereafter moved west with the rest of the Munoz family. By the time young Mickey was ten years old, he was a regular at Malibu. By the time he was 20, he was dating a woman named Kathy Kohner—who’s better known by her nickname, Gidget. Mickey even served as the stunt double for Sandra Dee in the Hollywood incarnation of Gidget. Those that know him well still chide him for donning a blonde wig and bikini for the part.

Eighty years down the track and Mickey’s still sticking and moving like a mongoose, still riding waves, still paddling, and still showing us all what it means to be a salt-of-the-sea waterman. This weekend, the annual Sport of King’s Mongoose Cup is coming to Dana Point. An all-day affair on Saturday, April 8, the race/expo/party is going down at Baby Beach in the Dana Point Harbor.

The event features paddle races for all age groups; from the very, very young to some of the planet’s most elite strokers.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. with awards scheduled for 3:45 p.m., so get there early, load up on sunscreen and be prepared to go fast. And for those that reckon themselves more cruiser than racer, there’s no shortage of entertainment. gear and equipment. For those thinking of upgrading their board or paddle, it’s a great chance to try something new. For those picking up a paddle for the first time, there’s an opportunity to take a lesson and learn from the best. Safety courses will also be offered. There’s a midday yoga session.

The first live band takes the stage at 7:30 a.m., and the after-party is guaranteed to keep going well after sunset.

Like most things in his life, Mickey was one of the early pioneers of stand-up paddling. After seeing Laird Hamilton at Malibu one day some years back, he sped back home to Dana Point, where he sawed off the blade of a kayak paddle, glued it to a broomstick and immediately started experimenting in the Harbor. His passion for stand-up paddling has only grown in the years since—which shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.

“When you’re surfing Pipeline, you need to commit totally,” writes Mickey in his new book, No Bad Waves. “You’re better off going for it than trying to pull back at the last second because the wipeouts when you pull back at the last second are way worse.

You have to want it, and even though you’ve made a mistake and you know you’ve taken off too late or you can’t do it, you still need to go for it because it’s worse if you don’t.

You can apply that one to life in general.

Don’t be dumb. Don’t think you can stand in front of a train or jump out of an airplane without a parachute and flap your wings and fly. Don’t be totally stupid, but if you do commit to something, go for it. You’ll learn from the wipeouts. So, you take off deeper in the pocket and you might not make a lot of waves, but the ones you do will be the real rewards.” SC Page 34

hen you’re hot, you’re hot.

This week, Grom of the Week honors go to a very deserved Liam Murray. Named the NSSA’s Surfer of the Week, the 15-year-old has been on fire lately. A couple weeks back he showed up at the State Championships, where he helped lead San Clemente High’s JV squad to a resounding state title. For his part in the action, Murray placed second in his division, contributing much-needed points to the team effort. Not content with just one trophy on the mantle, the next week he kept grinding at the NSSA contest at C Street in Ventura, where he made the final in both the Open Men’s and Open Juniors’ divisions.

Murray only started surfing about three years ago, but his success should come as little surprise. He picked up the sport thanks to the Colapinto family, most notably his friend Crosby. He also runs with an extremely talented crew, including pals Kade Matson, Jett Schilling, David Economos and Taj Linblad (all previous Groms of the Week).

As far as his inspiration and where he finds happiness, he says, “I love surrounding myself with good people to make myself the best surfer in the water. I grew up with the Colapinto family and seeing Griffin surf so well inspires me. I hope I will be at that level one day traveling the world surfing with my friends.” SC www.sanclementetimes.com
