Jim Johnson Memorial Sports Park Coming Along THE LATEST: The construction of Jim Johnson Memorial Sports Park is on track to open sometime this fall, according to city officials.

The park is located off the I-5 freeway southbound off-ramp and will feature three soccer fields, two with traditional sod and another with environmentally friendly sports turf.

Aeryn Donnelly-Terrey, the city’s park planner, said the field with sports turf will have coconut fiber and sand, which differs from traditional recycled rubber pellets.

This will make the field about 40 degrees cooler, Donnelly-Terrey said.

There will also be restrooms and water fountains, as well as new trees and monument signage.

The park will have a basketball court with lighting as well as a playground intended for children ages 5 to 12.

Jim Johnson was one of the original developers of the Marblehead Coastal Development. After he died, the Beaches, Parks and Recreation Commission decided to memorialize the park in his name.

The park, which is being paid for by Taylor Morrison Realty, cost $600,000, according to a 2014 staff report, but the city and a nearby HOA will have to maintain it.

WHAT’S NEXT: Donnelly-Terrey said the city is also getting close to getting recycled water hooked up to the park’s infrastructure, but it won’t be able to host public sports until 2017 because the grass needs to grow. —Eric Heinz

Planning Commission Approves Indoor Marijuana Cultivation Permitting THE LATEST: People can’t purchase, distribute or transfer marijuana in the city of San Clemente. But in November, voters will be asked whether use and commercial sales of recreational marijuana will be legal in California. The city has already implemented a preemptive ban on the controlled substance in anticipation of the law passing.

The ballot measure, Prop 64, would adopt the Adult Use of Marijuana Act (AUMA), and it would not allow cities to ban cultivation outright. Instead, people would be able to grow and cultivate marijuana in their homes (up to six plants) but not outdoors, on their patio or anywhere else that isn’t confined by four walls and a roof.

On Wednesday, Sept. 7, the Planning Commission approved a zoning amendment that would require people who want to cultivate marijuana to obtain a permit with the city. This will now be decided by the City Council. Commissioners Wayne Eggleston and Michael Smith voted against the permitting, saying they would rather allow for home cultivation without a permit.

Eggleston said he doesn’t believe the government should have that much au-

thority on what people do in their homes.

When the city took steps to regulate sober living homes, it justified it the same way it might with recreational marijuana: there are health and safety concerns as well as possible quality of life disruptions.

AUMA states a person must be 21 years of age in order to use, sell or cultivate marijuana.

20 meeting. AUMA is on the November ballot. If it fails to pass, then the laws will remain as they are. —EH

Outlets Signage Continues through Planning Phases THE LATEST: Although the banners currently in place at the Outlets at San Clemente are not permanent, a group of Marblehead residents has been up in arms regarding the proposed signage, claiming the lighting, and other aspects of the signs, are unacceptable.

One resident said because of the new sign ordinance, which was adopted this year, the signs are out of compliance with the city’s code, except the city and the Outlets had an agreement long before the passage of that law to keep the plan for signs in place. None of the signs included in the application are pole signs.

The application for signage includes 26 signs between 31.5 and 130 square feet.

The signage at the Outlets has gone through a series of legal challenges and revisions over the last few years.

THE LATEST: The bovine fixture in front of The Cellar in San Clemente was stolen for a brief period of time at midnight on Saturday, Sept. 10.

San Clemente Police Chief Dave Moodie said it was taken by friends of a competitor at the Hurley Pro, who allegedly wanted to pull a prank on their surfing companion.

The cow was later returned “unharmed,” Moodie said.

“I guess the ‘suspects’ were part of the Hurley Pro, just renting a place for the event, and this turned into a prank,” Moodie said.

An OCSD helicopter that was already in the area spotted the alleged thieves, and deputies responded to find the cow.

The cow was spotted by an anonymous informant who supposedly witnessed the incident.

“The helicopter was patrolling the area with no particular mission at the time and picked up on the cow,” Moodie said.

“We were able to basically follow it to the residence, and we made contact on the ground.”

E

ach year, the Ralphs Skate Court becomes the site of a premier skateboard competition, the SC Open Skate Contest, where skaters of all ages— from 5-year-old beginners to seasoned veterans—come to show their best skills.

But outside of competitions, there sometimes isn’t enough room in the park to accommodate all the skaters who want to use it. And without overhead lighting, the children who frequent the park have to leave when the sun sets.

Since March, the San Clemente Skatepark Coalition (SCSC) has been trying to raise awareness of its cause to make the current skate park about four times its current size and add lighting.

Stephanie Aguilar, the spokesperson for SCSC, said the group is working on different avenues to raise funds for the improvement. Current funding sources, which include selling T-shirts and hats, are emblematic of the effort’s grassroots beginnings. More plans to raise funds will be solidified in the near future, and the ultimate goal is to become a nonprofit, for which the organization has submitted approval with the state of California and IRS, Aguilar said.

“We’re still establishing our goals,” Aguilar said. “I think that to do a really good skate park, we probably need to raise $1 million.”

The city is currently reworking its Beaches, Parks and Recreation master plan, and SCSC is trying to make a case to Page 6

be a high priority in the plan.

“We’re kind of waiting to see how that all goes,” she said. “If we’re able to raise a bunch of money, I don’t know if we’ll have to fit into the master plan. That remains to be seen.”

Part of the city’s General Plan includes a series of requirements for adequate parking, so the SCSC is also planning to put in a supplemental parking lot. There’s already a lot to the east of the skate park.

“We’re looking at the existing skate park and want to add in a parking lot,” Aguilar said. “We’re not really sure if the city is going to require it, but we wanted to put it in just in case. It’s better to have additional skate features than to have to take some away.”

The average number of visitors to the skate park is being collected by the coalition to be added to a future application, Aguilar said.

“We’ve had such an outpouring of support from the community,” Aguilar said. “I think the City Council is seeing there are a lot of people (interested), and that this is a big thing. Once we get the numbers, we’ll be able to show the need for this.” SC

Meet the Water District Candidates

T

he San Clemente Times reached out to candidates running for the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) and Santa Margarita Water District (SMWD).

MWDOC purchases water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and distributes it to their client agencies, which provide retail water services to the public. Divison 7 covers most of San Clemente. SMWD provides water and wastewater services to more than 155,000 customers in the area, including Talega.

The Times asked each candidate to introduce themselves in 250 words. Their responses are listed in the order the candidates will appear on the November ballot.

Municipal Water District of Orange County: Division 7 Megan Yoo Schneider, Water Engineer Megan Yoo Schneider is a native Californian and grew up in Orange County. She is an enthusiastic individual with a life-long passion for water and public health and has devoted countless volunteer hours and her life to the future of water.

Megan has over 12 years of professional and association experience, including serving on two boards of directors, and she possesses a B.S. in Chemical Engineering with a Specialization in Environmental Engineering and an M.S. in Engineering with a Concentration in Environmental Engineering. She is also a licensed professional civil engineer in the State of California.

As a dedicated member and leader within a number of organizations, including the Water Environment Federation, the American Water Works Association, the California Water Environment Association, Megan invests much of her time to increase public awareness and educate the younger generations about the importance of water. Megan received numerous awards and accolades for her public outreach endeavors and water-related research, and she is devoted to ensuring the future of local, reliable water supplies for Orange County.

Evan Chaffee, Business Owner/Consultant As a lifelong Orange County resident and small business owner, it is important to me that current and future generations have access to safe, reliable and cost effective water. Without proper planning and consideration, the price for water will go up significantly.

I will work toward mitigating increases in price while identifying ways to become more self-sufficient. This will require strategic planning and smart negotiation among water suppliers.

Innovative Technologies: It will be important to review emerging technology and supply options, including desalination, to address direct to consumer as well as emergency supply needs.

Safe, Reliable Water: It is important to pursue new water sources to diversify the water supply while reinforcing responsible emergency planning. Conserving and setting aside a significant supply for the next drought must be a top priority.

Open Communication: It is important that we maintain an open dialogue to hear and address your concerns.

I will protect and preserve our precious water resources.

Richard Gardner, Water Systems Consultant While working for Fluor, I was able to move to Capo Beach with my young family in the ‘70s. The water districts had provided projects to enable the towns to grow. By conserving water, our area has been able to meet demands of the growing population without really increasing supplies.

Many important decisions will be made regarding the future of water for south Orange County. The agencies must work together to choose the best solutions for our water needs.

The best choice to supply our water future is further water conservation and the California water fix. The California water fix will provide high quality reliable water from the delta without negatively affecting the environment. The state fisheries will not be hurt and greater amounts of electricity will not be required as with other water treatment options. If the California water fix, which is the greatest reliable source of water for the cost, is not approved, we will need to work even harder to bring the local cities and water districts together and provide local water projects to meet our needs. Either way, as your MWDOC director, I will work to get state and federal funding approved for regional water solutions.

Whether you live in San Clemente, Dana Point, Laguna Beach, San Juan Capistrano or the Moulton Niguel Water District, we are over 90 percent dependent on MET for our drinking water. As the only elected water district director, I continue to attend meetings at MET and at the Municipal Water District of Orange County.

Raymond Miller, Registered Professional Engineer As a water manager and registered engineer in South Orange County, I have devoted my career to providing safe, clean and reliable water to my customers, while keeping costs down. This drought has proven that our water supply has limits, and while there has been a lot of work done to solve this problem, much remains.

This MWDOC position is one of the most important that you will vote for and you need a representative that understands the complexity of water issues.

I was the General Manager of the South Coast Water District for 25 years. I have been involved in many professional water and wastewater organizations, and served as the Chairman of the California-Nevada section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA), and then as the Vice President of AWWA, the national organization of water professionals. I know water.

I want to work to ensure that there is safe, clean and reliable water not only today, but for our children and our children’s children.

It is what I inherited and what I will work tirelessly to pass along.

Santa Margarita Water District Charley Wilson, Incumbent As President of the Santa Margarita Water District’s Board of Directors, I am proud of my record protecting the environment, increasing reliability and protecting water quality. Charles “Chuck” Gibson, Incumbent Santa Margarita Water District (SMWD) Vice President Chuck Gibson was elected to a four-year term on the Board of Directors in 2012.

In 2013, Gibson was appointed Chair of the Engineering Committee of the Board where he was a leading voice for develop-

ment of recycled water facilities, groundwater and new storage and treatment facilities. In 2014, he was appointed Chair of the Board’s Finance and Administration Committee where he was instrumental in development of the District’s award winning Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.

“Conservation is important and people in South County have done a good job in that area. My top priorities include supporting continued water use efficiencies and ensuring a reliable supply of water through recycling while keeping costs down through productivity improvements and innovation.” For example, Gibson has supported solar energy for district operations—saving $500,000 annually.

Gibson has over 35 years of experience combined in working for major governmental agencies, and in business, including senior manager with a major national consulting firm.

Chuck is a leader in several water industry professional organizations including the Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA). He is on the Board of Directors of ACWA’s Region 10 covering Orange and San Diego Counties.

Gibson has a Master’s degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from UCLA. Betty H. Olson, Incumbent Thank you, SMWD, for reducing potable water use 24 percent last year. As a UCI professor of Environmental Engineering, my career focuses on water quality and quantity, educating future generations and serving on regional, state and local organizations to improve water. I ask for your vote for SMWD director to continue securing a reliable quality water supply. SMWD directors and I have increased reclaimed water use to 48 percent in the past four years; insured shortterm reliability by purchasing storage in the El Toro reservoir, building Upper Chiquita Reservoir, utilizing groundwater, and completing the Gubernadora multipurpose basin for storm water and irrigation storage. Longterm and emergency reliability projects are: Irvine Lake Baker Treatment Plant, Drought proofing the San Juan Basin, and linking with regional partners developing local water supplies and Lake Mission Project, replacing potable water with advanced treated water.

During the drought as Board President, SMWD provided homeowners and homeowner association’s rebates to update irrigation systems, remove turf and convert potable irrigation to recycled water. With these expenditures, and plans to build Trampas Recycle Reservoir, the District will reach 100 percent wastewater reuse. The district leads in undertaking a project that will slow storm water and recharge the San Juan Basin, beginning to drought-proof our region.

My background and experience is needed in this time of increasing water scarcity.

Meet the Candidates: Bill Brough and Mesbah Islam

B

ill Brough, the Republican incumbent candidate for California’s 73rd Assembly District, served on the Dana Point City Council from 2010-2014.

Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Army from 1986-1991, and operated a government affairs consulting firm from 20052014, according to his campaign page.

Brough’s challenger is Mesbah Islam, a write-in candidate. The San Clemente Times reached out to the Democratic candidate and did get in contact with him initially. However, after weeks of continuous emails and phone calls, Islam did not respond to set up an interview. Islam recently took down his campaign page on Facebook, and a spokesman for the Democratic Party of Orange County said they didn’t think Islam “was very serious about running anymore.”

We do know Islam is a resident of Mission Viejo, a young man and a Democrat.

His write-in campaign earned him 278 votes, or about .4 percent of Brough’s 74,568 votes.

But elections wait for nobody, and in the interest of fairness to Brough, who made time to visit with SC Times, we’ve assembled his answers to a variety of questions here. If Islam responds, we’ll run his answers online.

And though the state of his campaign may be in flux, his name will still appear on the ballot.

PROP 47 San Clemente Times asked Brough if he would do anything to alter Prop 47, which reduced punishments of certain crimes to citations in lieu of jail time.

“We had a series of fixes come through because we found out that things like the date-rape drug, stealing firearms or less than $950 were things that were missed in the proposition,” Brough said. “I think there were some unintended consequences that were missed when Prop 47 was passed.

“We had a series of bills to try to correct those, and as things come up… we’ll certainly look at legislation to fix that.”

Brough also said Prop 57, which is on this year’s ballot and would release people convicted of mostly nonviolent crimes, is something he hopes does not pass. He also said he would have to contemplate raising the state’s prison budget.

MARIJUANA SC Times asked about concerns Brough may have regarding the possibility of marijuana being legalized this year. Brough is the current vice chair of the Committee on

Business and Professions.

“I don’t think it’s a good thing,” he said.

“If a doctor thinks it will help someone, I have no problem with that. My big issue is if it’s legalized and gets into the hands of kids.”

Brough said, if the measure passes, he would like to tax both medicinal and recreational transactions and to craft regulation around the marijuana industry that would inhibit negative repercussions.

SOBER LIVING HOMES SC Times asked Brough what people may expect regarding sober living home regulation in the near future.

“I was a little concerned at the last town hall where the lawyer said that the courts are looking at everything that we say and can base their decisions off that,” he said.

“We’ve got a big epidemic with prescription drug use,” Brough said, adding that he wants to approach sober living as a “consumer-protection issue.” He said, “I’m going to get with the insurance (companies) and see what it is they offer, and maybe there’s a way to steer people toward a licensed facility rather than an unlicensed.”

Brough also said it’s difficult to find space in South Orange County to establish a larger sober living facility.

HOMELESSNESS SC Times asked Brough about what can be done to alleviate the increase in the homeless population.

“We have to have a community plan,” Brough said. “There’s actually money and programs out there, and the county is sitting on a bunch of mental health money, and I know they’re moving forward on that as a county problem. We just need to get that money out and the money needs to go to the homeless veterans and the support groups who are helping.”

EPILOGUE At the end of the interview, SC Times asked Brough why he thinks his only opponent is a write-in and how his constituents view him now. He said because of his work on the hospital issues and MelloRoos bills, he hasn’t had to “take (his) foot off the gas.”

Brough said he intends to be very active in the Legislature this year regarding the issues that face South Orange County and California. He also said he intends to continue studying the developments of desalination plants in the area.

Justice for All Working Class Anger Cannot Be Ignored

W

hat has caused the rise of the angry American shouting out for justice today? It has surprised almost everyone who has seen both its inspiring message—of fairness, respect and equality— and its dark, ugly corollary. From both left and right, from Bernie to Donald, a chord has been struck that resonated with a large and geographically diverse group of our populace.

Whether the accusations are aimed at corporate executives, government officials, tax dodgers, police tactics or the president; whether one thinks the cause is outsourcing, immigrants, Wall Street or a do-nothing Congress, there is one unifying consequence: economic loss.

The largest loss is blamed on the trade agreements that are perceived to have produced an oversized loss in jobs. If only it were so simple. The truth is, these agreements are meant to help us, and free trade does have an overall positive effect.

We get cheap goods both from abroad and at home from these deals. The theory that NAFTA and numerous other trade agreements provide new markets for our own goods and services is sound. But theory does not take into account the time it takes to fully realize the fruits of an agreement.

Quaint village by the sea. Not so much anymore. What happened? We moved here 28 years ago, when Pico ended at La Pata and development didn’t exist inland.

Soon after, the new Talega residents decided they didn’t want to be part of San Clemente. City icons like Garden Cafe and Burger Stop have been ousted in the name of progress or greed. Sober living homes are separating neighbors and neighborhoods and diminishing the tranquility of our little village ambiance; of our once quaint and peaceful city. Freeway construction 24/7 disrupts our sleeping. We even lost our hospital. Hundreds of acres are disturbed and redeveloped for a large outlet mall that doesn’t really offer true outlet prices. Sirens are heard throughout

If it takes 20 years for a market to develop or a program to show dividends, it has little value to the generation that is struggling now. And that is, in my opinion, precisely the problem. American workers have been the recipients of the pain involved in these transitions, and the top management and elites have been its beneficiaries.

The forces that have driven lower-income Americans’ rage and anger exhibited at Trump rallies are not unfounded. The elite are too unrestrained, the decisions lawmakers make are not representative of ordinary citizens, immigrants without papers do affect the work force and the corporations who take their jobs overseas are guilty of a greed our social culture now seems WAVELENGTHS to celebrate.

Losing homes, businesses, educational opportunities are harmful to our social fabric. Pride, self-worth and the ability to assist your children for a better life are all critical human desires; their loss can cause despair and anxiety.

Of course, the public sector has its limits on what can alleviate this crisis.

Increased efficiency and oversight should be a priority for government programs.

And it is obvious that self-reliance and a positive attitude along with perseverance and pluck are catalysts required for any economic progress.

The Donald is hardly the person to lead the nation in this (or any other) dilemma.

He is simply exploiting the fears and fanning the fires of resentment, anxiety and selfishness—hardly the recipe for progress. Shutting down your government or attacking your institutions is no formula for improving the situation—smashing our fragile global market or unraveling our critical security alliances is both dangerous and counterproductive.

But this populist uprising, this nativist hatred, this ethnic anger should not be ignored or disdained. It is a quandary Americans must deal with and it is perhaps the defining issue of our day: are we going to leave our damaged wagons on the trail or will we fix these broken wheels and all move on together?

Unemployment and poverty create a lot of stress on families—misery, depression, divorce and unstable, unhappy children.

I would much rather have our taxes pay for repairs and maintenance for our schools, which is a positive for our community, while poverty and welfare, are not.

Most of the public schools in San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano are 50 years old or older and there was a lot of deferred maintenance due to the recession in 2008-2009. It’s important to keep our taxpayer-owned properties in good repair, such as leaky roofs, bad plumbing, unsafe electrical, etc. If not, this could cause more expensive damage, as anyone who owns a home knows. Football is back, and the return of our de facto national pastime brings the rekindling of our collective love affair with finger foods. Nowhere was that more evident than at The Point this past Sunday.

Lumpia. Photo: Matt Cortina The rainbow of football jerseys indicated a United Nations of NFL fanhood—together, we could’ve solved the concussion crisis and incidentally worked out a new collective bargaining agreement. Instead, we yelled and stuffed our faces.

The best of the finger foods was lumpia: crunchy Filipino egg rolls stuffed with pork, water chestnuts, carrots, soy and green onion with a side of sweet, goopy sauce. The thin sheath of crispy pastry on the outside was an ideal vessel—though seemingly constricting, the flavor of the filling was robust, balanced and warm. The side salad deceived too, as the mandarin orange and punchy ginger dressing belied the salad’s appearance as a garnish.

In short, the lumpia plate was more than finger food—it was the kind of dish that makes you wonder why there aren’t Filipino restaurants in every town.

At the Movies: ‘Sully’ Flies to No. 1

I

n a year when producers and studios are having trouble selling films based on star quality, Hollywood vets Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks release Sully with ease. These two, along with Laura Linney, are the only big names attached to the movie, and that’s all it took for the film to fly to No. 1 at the box office. On top of that, the film is actually quite a surprise in that they made an intriguing film out of what seemed like a puzzling film choice.

In January 2009, Cpt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (Hanks) and co-pilot Jeff Skiles (Aaron Eckhart) have their plane struck by stray birds, right as their commercial flight takes off and suddenly their engines are shot. Sullenberger instantly makes the risky decision to land on water in the Hudson River. History deems the

incident “miraculous,” and everyone is saved, but Sullenberger and Skiles are shaken up mentally.

Linney plays Mrs. Sullenberger back home, and Mike O’Malley and Anna Gunn play members of the National Transportation Safety Board who aren’t convinced Sullenberger made the right decision.

These days, when filmmakers find it necessary to hit a two-hour runtime, Sully is only 90 minutes long and gets everything that needs to be said and shown in that time. Many have compared the feature to Robert Zemeckis’ Flight (2012), but Eastwood’s direction is actually more consistent here and uses nonlinear structure to show Sully’s trauma and reluctance to be labeled a hero. Hanks is the usual likable lead we’re used to seeing him, and Eastwood also makes appropriate use of a subtle and quiet score. SC www.sanclementetimes.com

Happy Birthday: Thoughts on Turning 20

T

wo weeks from today, my youngest son will turn 20 years old. You took your time entering the world, arriving two weeks late, causing me to constantly keep an eye on the clock and calendar.

And, on your birthday, I still watch the clock. As the time turns toward midnight, I remember the moment during Saturday Night Live when my water broke. I carefully wedged myself into the car, and we inched along a busy Pacific Coast Highway to the hospital.

After approximately 15 hours of labor, at around four o’clock in the afternoon, as Vin Scully announced the televised Dodgers’ game, my doctor announced your arrival and handed me my swaddled son.

From that second forward, I’ve loved you every minute of every day.

As I celebrate your birthday marking two decades, I also pine for birthdays from the past. Long gone are the over-the-top themed birthday parties with goodie bags reflecting the current cartoon or movie that captured your imagination. Gone too are the mornings when I’d wake you from sleeping by shouting, “Happy Birthday,” as you pulled your pillow over your head.

Reflecting on your transition from teen to 20-something, I wonder if I prepared you well enough to face the challenges of adulthood. The past two decades flew by too fast. As you turn 20, my motherly gut instinct is still to protect you. I hope we discussed the following 10 topics, but either way it bears repeating.

1. Life is short, so experience as much as you can. (Well, within reason and to the letter of the law, and except permanent piercings and tattoos—unless you must, then wait ’til your late 20s when your brain LIFE’S A BEACH is fully developed).

By Shelley Murphy 2. Remember to say, “No.” There’s a distinction between being a doormat and heartless. Your true friends with whom you share solid friendships will respect you.

3. Women are complicated. A female landmine requires complex navigation, but remembering to be a gentleman and to treat us with respect helps minimize explosions.

5. Life is full of disappointment. Accept it. How you handle life’s disappointments shapes and defines your character. Think before reacting, quick responses can carry far-reaching repercussions. Better yet, call me; I’m always available to help pick up the pieces.

6. Hang on to your brother. Sure, you’re both busy with your lives but he’s the only sibling you’ve got. You two share a childhood and bond; someday you’ll value its importance. He’s also the only one who shares your similar annoyances with me and takes the same amount of joy in mocking me for my constant texts (see No. 4).

7. Boxer briefs do not last forever— holes are not a fashion statement.

8. Know that raising a child does take a village. Teachers and others in our Spanish Village by the Sea, and beyond, helped you get where you are today—remember and show gratitude to them and future mentors.

Remembering an Icon Former SCHS football players reflect on the life of coach Allie Schaff

A

t the start of the San Clemente High School football game against Roosevelt on Sept. 9, the Tritons and those in attendance paid their respects to Allie Schaff, a legendary coaching figure in the SCHS program, with a moment of silence.

Schaff, who coached the Tritons from 1972-1987 and turned the program into an Orange County power, died on Aug. 27.

In his 15 years at the helm, Schaff compiled a 73-75-4 overall record.

Before his hiring in 1972, San Clemente had never reached the playoffs and mustered up just two winning seasons. In 1974, two years after Schaff’s arrival, the Tritons reached the postseason for the first time in school history.

Schaff, who was always dressed in a suit and hat á la Tom Landry, implemented the wishbone offense at San Clemente, which translated into instant success.

From 1974-1979, San Clemente was a premier football program in the county. The team went 46-19-1 and reached the playoffs all six seasons during the stretch, claiming three South Coast League titles in the process.

The Tritons won 10 games in the 1975 and 1978 seasons, losing in the second and semifinal round of the postseason, respectively. The 1975 team was ranked No. 1 in CIF-SS Division 2-A. In 1979, San Clemente went 8-5, finished third in league, and barnstormed its way to an improbable appearance in the Central Conference Championship game.

Current San Clemente athletic director, John Hamro, was a junior tight end on that 1979 team, and witnessed the program’s ascension. Before Schaff’s arrival, Hamro said, San Clemente was never thought of as a football destination, let alone a perennial CIF contender.

“We were no longer known as the beach kids that surfed. We were tough, and people were taking notice,” Hamro said. “For us, (Schaff) was an icon. He made it cool and popular to be a San Clemente High School football player and to be proud of it, and it wasn’t always that way.”

Schaff’s wishbone offense played an integral part of the football team’s transformation. The playbook was small, consisting mainly of designed run plays that gave the quarterback the option to hand off or keep it for a run. During the entire 1979 postseason, Hamro said the team San Clemente Times September 15-21, 2016

passed the ball one time, on a short pass to the halfback in the backfield.

“Running the wishbone just builds toughness and that carried over to the defense, too. A lot of the guys went two ways back then,” Hamro said. “There was just that mentality of just tough, gritty players.”

Schaff coached dozens of players who would go on to play at the next level, including Bill Kenney, who played in the NFL for the Kansas City Chiefs.

From 1975-1979, nine Tritons were named All-CIF. Schaff’s coaching tree continues to have roots in the area. Don Douglass, Schaff’s former offensive line coach, remains on the Tritons staff as a freshmen team coach. Former SCHS defensive back and quarterback Mark McElroy played for the Tritons from 1974-1978, and is the head coach at Saddleback College.

Following his freshman year at Kansas, McElroy returned home to visit Schaff and the Tritons. After sitting in the team room, overhearing how Schaff and his assistants interacted with one another, he realized he wanted to pursue a career in coaching.

Schaff got McElroy his first teaching and coaching job at SCHS, and the two coached alongside one another from 1983-1986.

McElroy remembers Schaff as a humble, witty, kind man, who would do anything to help his players. McElroy couldn’t help but be influenced by his mentor.

“He was old-school ... I would have to say there’s still a lot of the way he coached in terms of his style in me.

He was kind of quiet for the most part and took things in and was more of a thinker,” McElroy said. “I can honestly say I probably wouldn’t be coaching if it wasn’t for coach Schaff. He had a huge influence on me.” SC

Football Prepares for La Mirada

The intensity of this week’s San Clemente football practices has been palpable, according to coach Jaime Ortiz. That’s because, after breezing past visiting Roosevelt 63-3 one week ago, the Tritons know this week’s opponent will be a tougher test.

The Tritons (2-1) will travel to play defending CIF-SS Southeast Division and CIF State Division III-AA champion La Mirada (1-2) on Sept. 16. La Mirada is currently ranked third in the CIF-SS Division 3 polls. San Clemente is ranked fourth in Division 2.

The two teams played each other last season, and San Clemente came away with a 42-26 come-from-behind victory.

Like the Tritons, La Mirada will field many of the same players as they did last season, including senior quarterback Tristan Meyer.

The Matadores’ stats and record cannot be used to properly assess the team, given the quality of opponents they’ve played this season. After opening the year with a 21-14 win over Orange Lutheran, La Mirada was shut out by St. John Bosco and Mater Dei, the No. 3- and No. 1-ranked teams in CIF-SS Division 1, respectively.

“They’re had two tough games in a row against quality opponents but they’re still a very good football team,” Ortiz said.

La Mirada will utilize two running backs, Nick Hernandez and Anthony Melendez.

The Matadores also possess speed and height on the outside at receiver, led by seniors Jeremy Clark and Elijah Hicks.

Girls Volleyball Rounding the Corner

Girls volleyball head coach Tom Beard believes his team found something that can propel them toward a successful season after an appearance in the Dave Mohs Tournament this past weekend. Beard said the Tritons, who went 1-3 at the high-level tournament, played some of their best and most inspired volleyball of the year.

In pool play, the Tritons lost a three-set match to Orange Lutheran and were narrowly defeated by Harvard-Westlake before defeating Centennial. Harvard-Westlake defeated the Tritons by six total points. In the tournament’s Division 1 silver bracket, the Tritons lost to Corona del Mar. The Tritons entered the tournament with an 0-3 record, and their performance hinted at a step in the right direction, Beard said.

“We were in position to win both games (against Harvard-Westlake and Orange Lutheran) so they were close and we played well,” Beard said via email. “Overall, (the tournament) was a turning point for the girls. We’re finally starting to click and play to our potential.”

The Tritons will open South Coast League play on the road in a match against Aliso Niguel on Sept. 22.

Juniors Place First at Laguna Hills Invitational

The junior runners on the Tritons girls cross country team placed first in the Division 1 race at the Laguna Hills Invitational on Sept. 10. The Tritons were led by Mia McFadden, who looped the course in a time of 19:51.

ore than 100 skaters of all ages descended upon the San Clemente Ralphs Skate Court at Richard T. Steed Memorial Park on Sept. 10 for a fun day of competition and skateboarding.

The date marked the 17th iteration of the popular contest, which is put on by the

San Clemente Friends of Beaches, Parks and Recreation.

There were plenty of age-group division winners, and many took part in the popular best trick contest, which was modified this year into a best trick jam session, which included multiple winners.

What’s Trestles Worth?

With the Hurley Pro in town, the value of Lowers is evident in so many ways

hat’s a surf spot worth? If you live around San Clemente or Dana Point, you know your local break’s worth quite a bit. From San Onofre to Salt Creek, we raise our kids on the sand, enjoying the sunny lifestyle while creating memories to last a lifetime.

A child’s first wave, the first time they glide and trim down the line, their first contest trophy—it’s all priceless stuff. But there’s also a significant financial perk to having a world-class surf spot in your backyard.

This week, the World Surf League’s Hurley Pro has been in town, which means not only have we had a chance to cheer on hometown heroes Tanner Gudauskas and Kolohe Andino, but the power of the surf business has been in full bloom. The world’s best surfers and their entourages are staying in local hotels, booking neighborhood vacation rentals, shopping in area boutiques and sampling the myriad culinary delights.

Not only that, so are their fans. And that’s where the real money is.

The average visitor to Trestles spends between $80 and $138, according to a 2012 Surfrider Foundation study by Chad Nelsen, with approximately 330,000 surfers from around the world heeding the call of the cobblestones every year. The estimated annual revenue generated from Trestles is approximately $26 million. So to the salty guy down at Lowers complaining about the “pros taking over,” there is an upside.

In fact, after polling over 5,000 surfers, Nelsen’s study found that there are about

icking off her National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) campaign with a little pop and sizzle, San Clemente’s Kirra Pinkerton got busy up in Surf City last weekend. Notching wins in both the Women’s and Girl’s divisions, she came away with a statement-making double win in some very trying conditions on the south side of the Huntington Beach pier.

“Super stoked to take home double wins,” said Pinkerton. “[I] broke out a fin and had mix and match fins, but that didn’t stop me.”

3.3 million people in the United States that surf. And they surf a lot. They surf on average 108 days a year, drive an average of 10 miles per session and contribute an estimated $2 billion to the U.S. economy annually.

When one considers that Trestles makes up $26 million of that number, it reveals just how valuable a resource it is. For comparison, it’s estimated that Maverick’s brings close to $24 million into Half Moon Bay every year, and in 2016, it was reported that the Superbank on the Gold Coast of Australia brought approximately $15 million into the Gold Coast community.

With the Hurley Pro grinding through heats on Friday afternoon—while wildcard Gudauskas was upsetting world champion Gabriel Medina in Round 3 of the contest— the shops up and down El Camino Real and Del Mar in San Clemente enjoyed brisk business. As the west wind blew, it had the feel of a busy summer weekend, but instead it was 1 p.m. on a weekday afternoon.

“It’s like a trade show around here,” joked resident and former pro surfer Chris

“It’s so good to come to town and see old mates, watch some great surfing and soak it all in,” said Andy King, Drummy’s lunch date and the head coach of the Australian national surf team. “It’s a pretty special little corner of the world.”

With room to sleep seven, an international conglomeration of surfers, photographers, videographers and manager types called it home for the duration of the contest’s twoweek waiting period.

“We try and stay in this place every year.

It’s comfortable, and it’s quiet,” described women’s world champion Carissa Moore of her accommodations.

Besides just the fans and competitors, the entire event production crew has to be put up in town, which constitutes a small army. On average, it costs about $3 million to produce a world tour contest, and that number’s probably closer to $5 million

After the year she’s had, a busted fin and some onshore wind shouldn’t be too much to contend with. Making the jump to the World Surf League’s Qualifying and Pro Junior series, competing against women considerably older and more seasoned, Pinkerton made the semifinals at the Shoe City Pro in Huntington to start the year off. Then in March, she took her act back east to the Ron Jon Van Pro Junior in Cocoa Beach, Florida (hometown to 11-time world champion Kelly Slater), where again she made the semis.

Over the summer, Pinkerton competed in Mexico and El Salvador, before landing in the semifinals of the Van U.S. Open of Surfing Pro Junior. Currently ranked 59th in the world, to say the 13-year-old is on her way is an understatement. SC Page 30

when it comes to a combined event with men and women. All of the personnel, from judges, to on-air talent, to administrative staff, need a roof over their heads and food in their bellies. Never mind all of the equipment and gear that needs to be rented, as well as local hired help.

“We’re down here all day long, making sure folks are safe and everybody’s taken care of,” noted one of the seasonal lifeguards. “When summer ends, I have to work another job, so I’ll definitely take as many hours down here as I can.”

The Hurley Pro is one of the biggest event in San Clemente all year long. Thousands deal with the traffic and parking to make their trek to the shore. Online, the contest draws millions of eyeballs to its hours and hours of live webcasting, promoting not only the talent of the surfers, but also the splendor of the area.
