Five things San Clemente should know this week With Carbonara’s Closure, a New Venture Looks Forward THE LATEST: On Thursday, April 27, Carbonara’s Restaurant announced on its website and on a sign in front of the restaurant that it had closed.

A new restaurant, expected to be named 111 Coastal, is planned be established in its place, owners told the San Clemente Times.

Carbonara’s has been a staple in the San Clemente community for nearly 30 years.

It opened in 1989 and was a hub for local gatherings and meetings, according to people close to the original owner.

Tony Carbonara, the founder of the Italian restaurant, died in 2013, and with him so did the atmosphere of what the business once was, some people who were close to Tony said.

Justin Rider, the president of 111 Coastal, has partnered with Rocco Carbonara, the nephew of Tony, to make changes to the restaurant.

Regarding the loss of Tony, “I compare it to when a church loses a pastor, and it takes a long time to get through,” Rider said. “He was the lifeblood of the town, and when he was gone…it started the clock for that previous business. (Under the name Carbonara’s) we had some huge shoes to fill.”

Rick Anderson, former owner of Casa Tropicana, worked closely with Tony when the city was trying to revamp the Pier Bowl and Avenida Del Mar. “Even though the food was great, we didn’t go there for Italian food; we went there for Tony and Mary, Tony’s wife,” Anderson said.

Rider said the new restaurant is an opportunity to make a fresh contribution to San Clemente. He said he and his business partners are making efforts that follow Tony’s own legacy. Rider said they have started to make contributions to the city wanting to sponsor the San Clemente High School football team, Casa Romantica, tutoring junior college students in math and science as well as other charitable entities.

Not everyone close to the situation is thrilled with the name and concept change.

said she is sad to see the name go and that it was the last physical legacy of her father.

“The restaurant was definitely difficult to run without dad, and mom needed to move on,” Christina said. “We had numerous offers (from people who wanted to buy it), but we decided to keep it in the family.”

Christina said it was a little unsettling to find out that the restaurant was closing and the name would be removed. She also said she thought maintaining the name would be good for brand recognition.

Robert Novello, owner of The Fisherman’s Restaurant & Bar in San Clemente, was part of the effort to revitalize the Pier Bowl and Del Mar and worked with Tony.

Novello said he was puzzled by the move, and that keeping the name could retain customers. He said his fondest memories of Carbonara’s were during community fundraising events at the restaurant.

WHAT’S NEXT: Rider said he could not elaborate on what changes will come to the location, and the opening date is yet to be determined.

The Carbonara catering business will still continue along the same business model at this time, Rider said.

“I have a very deep connection to the city of San Clemente, and I’ve never run into a town like this,” Rider said, adding he was born at San Clemente’s general hospital when it operated. “I learned from the tradition and the legacy that Tony started and left behind, it’s something that I’m taking very seriously going forward with the 111 concept. (The restaurant) is about honesty and being charitable and a town meeting place. That’s very much in the spirit of what we’re bringing.”

Despite the change and the loss of one of the city’s most popular meeting locations, Novello said he is eager to see what the future holds for 111 Coastal.

“Hopefully, it’ll be good,” Novello said.

City Will Amend Letter to Coastal Commission to Bolster Position against Nuclear Waste Storage THE LATEST: City Council on Tuesday, May 2, voted to amend certain sections of a letter members intend to send to the California Coastal Commission regarding the city’s opposition to storing spent nuclear fuel at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

The Council directed the city clerk to amend the language of the letter, and it will be approved for submittal by Council members Lori Donchak and Mayor Pro Tem Tim Brown.

The letter requests the Coastal Commission recognize San Clemente as an unwilling participant in this storage and to require monitoring of the fuel, which is expected to be buried in dry cask containers. It also demands the Commission to support federal efforts to move the fuel to another location and to require emergency services be continued at the facility.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Council voted to add that if these requests could not be met, the Commission should revoke the permit it granted Southern California Edison, the majority stockholder of SONGS, to store the fuel.

Citizens Oversight, the activist group that sued the Coastal Commission over its permitting of storing spent nuclear fuel, hosted a protest in front of City Hall prior to the meeting. —EH

Jim Johnson Memorial Sports Park to Open May 10 THE LATEST: City Council approved the completion of Jim Johnson Memorial Sports Park during its regular meeting on Tuesday, and with it the grand opening will take place next week.

The sports park has three soccer fields, a basketball court, a children’s playground and sheltered picnic tables.

The park, which is being paid for by Taylor Morrison Realty, cost $600,000, according to a 2014 staff report, but the city and a nearby HOA will have to maintain it.

During the meeting, an emotional speaker thanked the council for dedicating the park after Jim Johnson, one of the original developers of the Marblehead Coastal Development.

El Camino Real Improvements Coming Along, to be Completed in Summer THE LATEST: Construction on El Camino Real from North Beach to Camino Capistrano is about 20 to 30 percent complete, according to city officials.

Curb placement is expected to begin this week as well as landscaping, which will include a mix of rocks and succulents.

“The next order of work is to install the larger boulders, 24 inches and larger,” said Tom Frank, the city’s transportation engineering manage. “Following that, you’ll see the contractors starting to lay the curb.”

Frank said the double yellow line in front of the Marblehead subdivision is complete, but the city will add a center “rumble strip,” such as the one on the newer extension on Camino del Rio from La Pata.

WHAT’S NEXT: Frank said a realistic completion time frame is likely late June to mid-July because of weather delays earlier this year.

The curb adjacent to the Arco gas station on the corner of El Camino Real and Camino Capistrano will be moved 20 feet out toward the street after the landscaping is complete.

The objective with the extension is to make the corridor safer but with equivalent travel times.

The project will include the completion of two-way, 10-foot-wide bike lanes and the pedestrian walkways along the strip.

Camino Del Rio Intersection Improvements Start, Detours Planned The city of San Clemente announced on Wednesday, April 26, that the construction of the intersection improvements on Camino Del Rio have begun and are expected to finish in early July 2017, but there will be temporary closures at the intersections from May 3-31.

As construction of the roundabout, central islands and medians takes place, the intersections at Camino de Los Mares and Calle Sarmentoso will need to be closed periodically, a city press release stated.

The intersections at Camino de Los Mares and Calle Sarmentoso will be closed at different time periods for approximately three weeks beginning on May 3 with a target detour and closure completion date of May 31. Access to homes in the communities adjacent to Camino Del Rio will be accessible at all times.

The improvements are part of the final pieces to the completion of the La Pata connection. As La Pata came online, the city planned to make the outlet that connects from Camino Del Rio more accessible to heavier traffic volumes and slow the traffic coming through the residential areas.

Friends of San Clemente Golf Tournament San Clemente’s Friends Foundation will host its seventh annual golf tournament on Friday, June 23, at the San Clemente Municipal Golf Course beginning at 12:30 p.m. Foursomes cost $500 and individuals are $150. Letters to the Editor ATTENTION CUSD PARENTS DAWN URBANK, San Clemente

Your high schoolers need you to take a stand to ensure they reach their full academic potential.

You may think you have control over your child’s educational journey. Think again.

Only 54.1 percent of Capistrano Unified School District high school graduates complete their A-G requirements.

That means 45.9 percent have no option after graduating except to go to community college, apply out of state, or get a job.

Irvine is at 66.8 percent and Laguna Beach at 67.2 percent.

A-G requirements are critical if your child seeks to attend a four-year state college in California.

CUSD requires College & Career Planning (CCP) to graduate so that students would be trained in basic computer skills and have access to an academic counselor without needing a live counselor.

The downside: the CCP and health class requirements make it difficult for students to complete their A-G requirements without attending two years of summer school.

The California Department of Education (DOE) does not require students to take CCP to graduate; this is unique to CUSD. The DOE does not require health as a stand-alone class to graduate. These units can be embedded into physical education or social studies.

CUSD is not preparing students for higher education in California. This is why only 8 percent of last year’s graduating class is currently attending a UC school.

The only solution is to eliminate CCP as a graduation requirement and incorporate health into physical education or social studies. This would improve the number of students who would qualify to apply to a four-year California college/university.

CUSD responded to my citizens’ request and will include this matter on its June 7 school board meeting agenda.

I encourage parents to attend. Any parents who would like to have their comments incorporated into the board meeting agenda as part of the permanent record should e-mail them to me at info@ cusdwatch.com no later than May 20. The comments may also be submitted directly to the district, and you should email all of the Board of Trustees as soon as possible so that we can end CCP this year.

San Clemente Must Unify against Toll Road Proposals

O

ne of the biggest threats facing San Clemente is the potential extension of the 241 toll road through town.

The Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) is doing its best to divide our community and build another “Kings Highway.”

We need to stand united as a community against all toll road options that divide San Clemente the way the I-5 has. Don’t be fooled by the TCA’s attempt to pit neighbor against neighbor by presenting options through different communities. We need to stand united to show them that we will not accept any new toll roads. If you live in San Clemente, you will be negatively affected by the construction of the toll road.

With the TCA’s settlement with environmental groups preventing the consideration of the alignment that would have run behind San Clemente from the Oso Parkway terminus to the I-5 just south of San Clemente, the TCA is pursuing other options. This is why it is important that our community unite to protect San Clemente.

Some people might point to the traffic on the I-5 as a reason to support the toll road. This is a farce. The TCA’s own numbers show a minimal reduction in traffic from the I-5 if the toll road is completed. Building a freeway junction in the center of town will not reduce traffic; it will worsen it. Once the I-5 widening is complete, coupled with the recently completed La Pata extension, we will see traffic decrease. The TCA has increased its toll fees a dozen times, which limits accessibility to only those who can afford it.

The price to drive the toll road, combined with the state’s gas tax and vehicle registration hikes, will do little to solve traffic congestion. San Clemente residents will bear a painful burden if the toll road cuts through our town. It would change the quiet landscape, home values will plummet and reduce sales and bed taxes, resulting in general fund revenue losses.

Due to the settlement agreement, the toll road cannot be built around San Clemente. The following options are being proposed: Route 14 creates a flyover freeway shadowing La Pata, behind Target, crosses Vera Cruz and connects to the I-5 over the high-school fields at Pico (this is the most likely scenario). Route 13 and 17 create flyovers that follow the ridgeline north of Forster Ranch, cuts over Los Mares and flies down the center of the Shorecliffs Golf Course, connecting to the I-5 at Vaquero.

The City Council adopted a resolution opposing these proposed routes, and in

a letter to the TCA we communicated that the only solution with the least impact would be to build out arterial roads.

We urged the TCA to look at this solution because it provides the best benefits CITY COUNCIL for mobility for South CORNER Orange County with the

This would include a combination of arterial street improvements to extend Crown Valley Parkway to connect to the 241 toll road, construct an east-west arterial along the option 9 corridor and extend La Pata.

We reminded the TCA that prior analysis was conducted on option 9, which would provide an east-west connection between the 73 and 241 toll roads. This analysis demonstrated that this connection would provide regional mobility benefits, so we urged the TCA to consider this option in its environmental impact review of project alternatives. An east-west connection is similar to the “Beltway” alternative.

As a result of the public and City Council urging the TCA to include in its process a greater effort to identify arterial solutions to traffic, the TCA agreed to do so at its last meeting.

Join me in opposing any new construction of toll roads—we need to start the conversation now. Together we can stop the construction of this unneeded, overpriced roadway. At the Movies: ‘The Circle Full’ of Square Pegs

f there was any wonder left if Emma Watson could successfully carry a box-office hit after the mega success of Beauty & the Beast last month, her latest movie should answer that. James Ponsoldt’s adaptation of Dave Eggers’ The Circle has a lot of other big names, including Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, John Boyega and Karen Gillan, but the sole lead is Watson herself.

Despite her being a household name, the film placed No. 4 at the box office, and it’s really no surprise.

The Circle is the dullest film to be released this year so far.

Mae Holland (Watson) lands her dream job at the most powerful technology company in the world, The Circle, after her close friend, and a Circle employee, Annie Allerton (Gillan) puts a good word in for her. There Mae quickly learns how their

high-end social media and new-wave gadgets could shape the digital world in the future, including constant cameras, moderating and superior approval. Mae’s life begins to quickly revolve completely around the company.

Watson is as bland as ever, portraying an incoherent protagonist with an unconvincing accent, though not nearly as stale as Ellar Coltrane’s wooden performance.

The film can’t seem to understand its own pro-privacy message, and on top of that has one of the most nonsensical endings in a long while. Ponsoldt has directed some great indie flicks like Smashed (2012) and The End of the Tour (2015), but his first foray into studio films could use a little more work. SC www.sanclementetimes.com

‘FLOUNDER POUNDER’ AND ‘O.G.’ TACOS

T

his taqueria is not bashful, especially when it comes to flavor. Sancho’s Tacos brings the glamorized feel of “the streets” to its atmosphere, with Tupac and other all-star West Coast rappers coming through the speakers. On the menu, dishes are categorized in nomenclature of historical, authoritative endearment, such as “Yard Bird” and “Federale.”

The restaurant prides itself on the heritage of street tacos and pays homage in its recipes to the origin as much as modern cuisine.

The choice this week was to roll two deep with the “O.G.” and “Flounder Pounder” tacos. The marinated fish along with powerful cilantro sauce packs a punch to each segments of the taste buds. This could be the mischief of something called “Chubbie Sauce,” that miraculous ingredient every successful restaurant keeps in ambiguity.

You do not question the sauce; the sauce does not question you.

The blend of contributions is inspiring and well-balanced, and lime juice can be applied to the mixture as needed.

The second taco, O.G., was truly a unique experience. Made with tri-tip steak, the meat had a caramelized texture, similar to Chinese orange chicken but not nearly as formidable or thick. It was more to highlight the flavors, which were also accompanied by the Chubbie sauce and cilantro, rather than make its own statement.

Sancho’s Tacos has been open for two weeks in San Clemente but has locations around Orange County. As a city with residents and visitors always clamoring for fish tacos, Sancho’s has found a solid location, right at the gateway to Trestles.

May is Mental Health Month

A

ccording to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, approximately one in five children ages 13-18 in the U.S. experience a severe mental disorder in a given year, and mood disorders are the third leading cause of hospitalizations for Americans aged 18-44. Most likely someone you know struggles or has a family member who struggles with and/ or treats the symptoms of a mental health disorder. Do you know who that person is or how you can help them?

People with symptoms of mental-health disorders and diseases respond positively to social support; yet as a society, we tend to hide these types of health issues for fear of criticism, derision or contempt.

Mental health diseases are not flaws in character, they are unfortunate medical events, just like cancer, heart disease and the common cold. An important goal of Mental Health Awareness Month is to dispel myths to help end stigma.

Here are a few of the myths we should all try to bust: • “People with mental illness just need to pull themselves together and get busy.” If you have a chronic heart condition, you would seek treatment

and follow the recommendations of a doctor. Our brains deserve the same medical care when chronic mental health symptoms occur.

• “Mental illness makes people violent.” A small percentage of mentally ill individuals may become violent; however, according to the National Institutes of Health, people with a mental health diagnosis are 11 times more likely to be the victim of violence.

• “Mental illness is a sign of weakness.”

We know there are both genetic and environmental contributors to mental illness, including traumatic events such as serving in a war zone, rape, violence, car accidents and loss of loved ones. A human being has as much ability to beat a mental health disease by being strong-willed as they do in curing cancer by treating it solely with a positive attitude.

I am often asked what signs and symptoms a loved one might be showing that may indicate mental health concerns. In adolescents and adults, there are usually both emotional and behavioral changes,

including excessive fear, worry or sadness, extreme mood changes, difficulty concentrating, lack of self-care, changes in sleeping habits, irritability or anger, avoiding activities they usually enjoy, changes in eating WELLNESS AND habits, difficulty in perPREVENTION ceiving reality, inability to

Harlow Heads to the NFL Atlanta Falcons pick Sean Harlow in fourth round of 2017 draft

S

ean Harlow and his family were settling in to watch the second day of the 2017 NFL Draft coverage when his phone started buzzing. The area code registered on his phone as a number from Georgia.

When Harlow answered, Atlanta Falcon’s general manager Thomas Dimitroff was on the other line.

The Falcons selected Harlow, a versatile offensive lineman and San Clemente native, with the 136th overall pick in the fourth round of the NFL Draft on April 29.

“I’m just really excited to get out there,” Harlow, who played four years at Oregon State University, said. “The Falcons are a great organization and a great team. They seem like they have a real great brotherhood of players.”

Harlow, who stands at 6-feet-4-inches tall and weighs 303 pounds, started 37 games at either left or right tackle for the Beavers, but he said the Falcons want to move him to the guard position at the professional level. The team’s right guard spot is currently open for competition and Harlow has experience playing the position, having practiced at guard for Oregon State in spring and

fall camp practices over the years.

“I thought I’d have to (switch positions) in college and move to guard or center out of high school. (Guard) will be a more natural spot for me as far as my size and abilities,” Harlow said.

Harlow was the lone offensive lineman the Falcons drafted this year, and he will join a strong, veteran group that paved the way for a high-powered offense that appeared in Super Bowl LI. “It’s a great opportunity and I’m excited to get in that room and learn from those guys,” Harlow said. “They’re a highly thought of offensive line and they’ll be great role models and people to learn from.”

Harlow arrived on campus at Oregon State as a highly-recruited prospect after earning All-CIF, All-County and All-League honors at San Clemente High School. He started in the Beaver’s fourth game of the year as a freshman and remained an impact player in Corvallis over the next three years.

A leg injury suffered during his junior season cost him five games, but he returned to play the final nine games of his senior season and earn second-team All-Pac-12 honors. Harlow was named a team captain his senior year.

As the son of former NFL veteran Pat Harlow, Sean has a professional pedigree.

Pat was a standout offensive lineman at USC, was selected No. 11 overall in the 1991 NFL Draft, and played for the New England Patriots (1991-95) and Oakland Raiders (1996-98). SC www.sanclementetimes.com

Boys Lacrosse Powers Past Griffins in Playoff Opener The San Clemente boys lacrosse team turned in an effort worthy of their No. 2 overall seed in the first round of the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County playoffs on May 2.

The Tritons played host to Los Alamitos and emerged with a convincing 16-4 win.

San Clemente will host El Toro in the second round of the playoffs on May 4.

San Clemente’s victory was never in doubt, as they built up a 9-0 lead at the halfway point.

Matthew Keany led the team with four goals, two assists and three groundballs.

David Howren notched three goals and two assists, Nick Lemus scored two goals and had four assists, and Liam Nelson scored twice and tallied two assists.

Senior goalie Harrison Webb had a big night in the cage, recording 11 saves.

Boys Volleyball Wins Outright League Title, Heads to Playoffs A three-set sweep against Capistrano Valley and a Dana Hills loss resulted in an outright South Coast League championship for the San Clemente boys volleyball team on May 1.

The league title was the 11th for San Clemente (25-7, 7-1 league) in the last 18 seasons.

Against the Cougars, Kyler Presho had nine kills, Bryce Curtis had six and Jess Hunt had five.

San Clemente will now head into the CIF-SS Division 1 Championships. Playoff brackets will be released on May 5.

Girls Lacrosse Survives First-Round Playoff Scare in Historic 13-12 Win The San Clemente girls lacrosse team found itself in a back-and-forth battle in the first round of the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County playoffs on May 2. Visiting Beckman pushed the Tritons to the brink, but the Tritons came up with clutch plays down the stretch to secure a 13-12 victory.

The playoff win was the first in program history.

Shark Attack

n Saturday afternoon, April 30, at approximately 6 p.m., 36-year-old Leeanne Ericson was bitten by a shark while swimming at San Onofre State Beach. At the time of the incident, she was in the water at Church beach in front of the Camp Pendleton campground with a small group of friends.

Wearing a wetsuit and swim fins, she bobbed alongside her boyfriend, who was surfing, when she was pulled underwater and momentarily disappeared.

Ericson’s boyfriend turned to catch a wave, but before he could start paddling he heard her scream.

“She was gone, so he dived under to try and find her and couldn’t find her,” the victim’s step-father, Mark Leidle, explained to a local NBC affiliate. “He came up, and the shark’s tail was sloshing in the water, and she popped up and he grabbed her and put her on the board.”

Multiple sources, including Ericson’s boyfriend, have reported that there was a California Sea Lion in the immediate vicinity.

“It’s believed that at the time a shark was chasing a sea lion. The sea lion evaded the shark and instead of biting the sea lion, it’s believed the shark mistakenly struck the victim,” said a State Parks public safety official who was on the scene but was not authorized to speak on the record. “It could have been a case of mistaken identity. She was floating in the water in a black wetsuit and fins and the shark may have confused the two.”

Other people on the shore said they witnessed the incident.

“At first, I wasn’t sure what was happening when I saw a group of people helping this woman in through the surf,” said San Clemente’s Hunter Robinson, who was on the beach with a group of friends getting ready to go surf when the incident occurred. “I heard ‘shark’ and just started running out to help.”

ing across the rocks to help.

“It was low tide, and she was probably in the worst place possible place,” continued Robinson.

Miraculously, the bite reportedly missed Ericson’s femoral artery. If the artery had been severed, there’s a strong possibility she would have died before reaching the beach.

“We put her on a surfboard and tried to keep it really low to the ground in case she fell off,” Robinson said. “A friend of mine became an EMT in January, so we applied a tourniquet to her hip to try and slow the bleeding down. She said she was having trouble breathing.”

On the beach, rescuers were met by lifeguard and emergency personnel. They did the best to control the bleeding and treat the victim for signs of shock. Ericson was then airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla for further treatment.

Lifeguards were going to sound the alarm. “It was surreal. We heard the lifeguard down the beach. At first it was hard to make out what he was saying, but I managed to hear the words ‘shark attack,’” said area surfer George Trim, who was

suiting up with his girlfriend at the time.

“The lifeguard then pulled up in front of us and made the announcement. Everyone was in disbelief at first. Then we all realized it might be someone we know, so it was pretty scary.”

Doctors at Scripps placed Ericson in a medically induced coma to stabilize her condition. Massive blood loss and fears of infection and secondary drowning made her situation extremely volatile. Forty-eight hours after the incident, her condition had somewhat stabilized, but, obviously, Ericson is facing an uphill battle.

“It tore her right back leg from her glute to her knee. The doctors also say that she drowned when the shark pulled her under,” reads the message on a GoFundMe page set up to help with Ericson’s medical expenses. “She’s now in Scripps Memorial Hospital fighting for her life. She is a single mom with three young children who depend on her. She has a long road ahead with several surgeries to go. I don’t know how much this will cost, but she’s going to need all the help she can get.”

Immediately following the incident, California State Park authorities closed

when he was only five years old, and eight years later his parents are still having a heck of a time getting him out of the water.

“I usually surf the point at San O or Church for longboarding, or Rivi’s and T-Street when I shortboard,” Aidan said.

“When I get to surf outside of Orange County, I love to surf Swami’s and Malibu.”

Stoked for all the right reasons, he says, “The things I enjoy most about surfing is being out in nature having fun and being with my family at the beach. Of course, I also love the feeling you get when you get a

great nose walk or a barrel.”

As far as his favorite surfers, he lists icons Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning at the top, with a significant nod to longboard stylists Taylor Jensen and Joel Tudor.

“I always surf for fun, but my goals with surfing are to continue to do well in my surf competitions for Shorecliffs Middle School and in my Longboard Coalition contests—I surf for the Doheny Longboard Club,” Aidan said. “I would like to make the surf team for longboarding at San Clemente High School.” SC

the surrounding waters two miles north and south of Church. By Sunday morning, people were already dismissing lifeguards’ stern warnings and surfing at Trestles and San Onofre, which is under the jurisdiction of State Park officials. But at Church, which is guarded by military personnel, it was clear that nobody would be allowed into the water through Wednesday.

The victim’s boyfriend has speculated that the shark was approximately 10 feet long, which would make it larger than the 6to 8-foot juveniles that have been spotted in the area in recent weeks and months. Last month there were two different incidents where a Great White was seen breeching at Trestles on Surfline.com’s streaming web camera. Days after the attack, aerial footage was taken of a number of sharks in San Clemente and Capo Beach. Additionally, authorities recently towed a dead whale offshore, which may be contributing to the sudden uptick in shark activity.

The last shark attack in Orange County came in June 2016 when a woman was bitten while swimming off the beach at Corona del Mar. She suffered a large bite across her torso but survived. A swimmer was fatally attacked in Solana Beach in 2012. SC
