Five things San Clemente should know this week Council Excuses Ethics Violation Complaint Against Councilwoman, City Officials THE LATEST: An anonymous ethics violation complaint filed against City Councilwoman Kathy Ward as well as Mayor Bob Baker and City Manager James Makshanoff was dismissed by the remaining Council members on Tuesday.

Council members Tim Brown, Lori Donchak and Chris Hamm were left to decide whether a violation had been committed

by Ward and, vicariously, the city staff.

They voted 2-1, with Donchak opposing, that no violation had been committed.

Emails requested by the complainant showed Ward had consulted with city staff to write a column in the San Clemente Times’s monthly “City Council Corner” against the city establishing voting districts.

San Clemente’s City Council is elected at-large.

In Ward’s April 7 column, she stated the movement to establish voting districts in San Clemente had an “ulterior motive” and that it would do more harm than good and divide the city’s residents.

During the editing process, Ward sent the column to the city’s public information officer Laura Ferguson as well as Makshanoff and Baker asking for advice on the piece, according to emails published by the city.

Jim Bieber, who has been at the forefront of the districting movement, alleged that in doing so, Ward violated the city’s ethics code by using city resources (staff time) to campaign against a ballot initiative Bieber and several other residents have filed to establish voting districts.

When the article was published, the petition had not yet been filed with the city or the Orange County Registrar of Voters.

Bieber also said records requests he had filed with the city had gone unfulfilled and did not reveal the spectrum of material he sought.

SC Times contacted the First Amendment Coalition, Transparency California, the California Newspaper Publishers Association and the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) regarding the matter, but none of them said there was anything substantially wrong with Ward’s actions.

However, in the city’s ethics policy, it says no resources including the use of city staff time shall be used for non-official city business.

During the hearing, the three Council members who had not recused themselves asked Ward if she believed she had committed a violation, to which she said she did not. Ward said she authored the article herself and collaborated to make the required word count for the column.

The FPPC wrote in an email they have received a complaint and are currently reviewing the allegations.

Judge Orders San Clemente to Establish Areas for Homeless Shelter THE LATEST: Since the state adopted Senate Bill 2 in 2007, which mandates cities must establish areas of land—private or public—as potential spots for homeless shelters, the city of San Clemente never established a plan that was in compliance with the law.

On July 1, Judge Robert Moss of the Orange County Superior Court ruled in favor of Emergency Shelters Coalition, which had filed a lawsuit against the city for its lack of identification of homeless shelters in its housing element.

It wasn’t until 2014 that the city began designating certain areas for a shelter, such as the current City Hall, a parcel of land near Vista Hermosa Sports Park and other areas. That wouldn’t have prevented the city from seeking private acquisition of land, and, the lawsuit stated, the city must at least try to establish areas that would be suitable for the land.

In February, City Council was met with heavy opposition in establishing a homeless shelter near the sports park after Jamboree Housing Corporation submitted proposals for a shelter at that location.

Residents came out in droves to speak during the meeting to prohibit any kind of transaction.

Ed Connor, one of the attorneys for Emergency Shelters Coalition, said because the city was only allowing for its

surplus land to be identified as potential spots, it made it almost impossible for anyone to try to establish a shelter.

WHAT’S NEXT: Connor said the city has 120 days to identify areas for a homeless shelter. City Attorney Scott Smith said the city will not make a comment on the matter until City Council has been briefed on the ruling. —EH

City Council Appoints Second Round of Committee/Commission Members THE LATEST: At a June 29 special meeting, the City Council re-appointed current Chairman Donald Brown and Commissioner Michael Smith to the Planning Commission. Jason Talley was also appointed to the Commission.

For Human Affairs Committee, Kay Childs, William Ewing and Cindi Juncal were all appointed and Patricia Hasbrook was appointed for a one-year term, as she is filling the remainder of a term.

Cathie D’Itri was appointed to the Investment Advisory Committee.

Matrix Consultation Hired for Police Force Study THE LATEST: City Council approved to hire Matrix Consultation to conduct a study on the city’s branch of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department police force at its Tuesday night meeting. The goal of the study is to find out where San Clemente’s crime is most frequent, if additional officers are needed and other aspects of law enforcement.

Public safety advocates spoke during the oral communication portion of the meeting, citing OCSD’s statistics that show some of the city’s crime rates have risen in the last few years.

Additionally, advocates said statistics such as transient vulgarity and the increase in homeless encampments are not calculated in these statistics. The city will pay $49,000 to Matrix for the study.

WHAT’S NEXT: OCSD San Clemente Police Chief Dave Moodie said he has spoken with the public safety advocates and will put together a task force of officers to examine some of the areas where crime has been an issue. OCFA: Arson Caused Fire at San Clemente Business Owner of Timeless Ink says he was targeted in fire

range County Fire Authority investigators have determined the fire that caused significant damage to a two-story business complex at 3553 Camino Mira Costa was the result of arson, Capt. Larry Kurtz said on June 29.

The fire broke out at about 4:50 a.m.

On June 28 at Timeless Ink, a tattoo shop in San Clemente, which OCFA has determined was the business targeted by whomever set the fire.

“This deliberately set fire could have endangered the lives of anyone who may have been inside the building, and it certainly could have endangered the lives of the OCFA personnel putting out the fire,” OCFA Capt. Larry Kurtz said.

Stuart Parsen, owner of Timeless Ink, said this fire has been devastating to him and his family.

“It’s the biggest nightmare in the world, without a doubt,” Parsen said.

Parsen said because he hadn’t held his insurance policy for a long enough period of time, he will not be covered by the company and has lost a substantial amount

of value in inventory and structure damage. He said the tattoo artists who contract with him also lost a significant amount of inventory.

“I’m damn-near sure I’m pretty screwed,” said Parsen, a 26-year-old father with two young children.

No arrests or charges have been filed against anyone in the incident at this time.

However, Parsen said he had received what he perceived as “threatening” phone messages from an individual prior to the fire. Parsen said he believed the individual once tried to “send a message” by dropping off a water bottle that was in the shape of a grenade.

The investigation is ongoing, and OCFA could not confirm the veracity of Parsen’s allegations at this time.

Despite the losses, Parsen said there has been an outpour of support from members of the San Clemente community.

Orange County Fire Authority said the fire was put out within 15 to 20 minutes, with 26 firefighters responding. There were no injuries in the incident, Kurtz said.

from the firefighters on scene,” Kurtz said. “This could have been much worse if they let it get any bigger.”

Firefighters had to saw through the roof to release the heart of the inferno and contain it, Kurtz said.

Kurtz said the businesses on the top floor cannot be occupied at this time, and he said he didn’t know the status of the businesses on the bottom floor. The top floor of the complex also houses a branch of Farmers Insurance.

The building inspectors for the city and

OCFA have yet to make a determination on the structure’s status.

No Small ‘Fly’ Surfboard craftsman worked with legends of the sport

ean Pierre Van Swae has seen the surf industry blossom, from the era that brought The Endless Summer to today’s modern construct.

“The Fly,” as he’s known from his penchant to jump off cliffs and out of airplanes, is a walking encyclopedia of custom surfboard information, as well as construction of various seafaring devices.

Every piece of the interview Van Swae gave on Tuesday at his Dana Point shop came full circle with some kind of piece of history of crafting surfboards.

Born in Belgium, Van Swae was raised in Southern California and eventually made his way to the area, where surfing was starting to take off and be recognized on a national level.

“It’s just a love of what I do; it’s not really work,” he said. “I try to improve on some things when I can. For example, when surfboards in the 1970s started changing and enabled you to ride waves that have an arch to them, we started giving the boards more structural strength.”

Van Swae worked for surfboard legend Hobart “Hobie” Alter and a few others south of San Clemente and in Hawaii, where he had his own repair shop. He also worked for Clark Foam, which delivered foam-core blanks for boards along the coast.

“He (Hobie) was the best boss to work for,” Van Swae said. “He just let you do what you wanted to do with shaping or sanding or glassing, and he just wanted you to do a good job, and if you had any way to improve the board, he was all for that.”

Since 1961, The Fly started working for Wardy Surf based out of Pasadena and Laguna Beach. But he said he’s always loved the beaches around San Clemente: Trestles, Cotton’s and the rest.

“Soon as I saw the ocean, it was just love at first sight,” Van Swae said. “When my folks moved down to Laguna Beach,

I was in heaven. I saw a guy surfing, and that was something completely new to me.

I immediately found out where the local surf shop was, and I got involved so much hanging around the surf shop that they put me to work.”

In those early years, Van Swae said they would pile into the van to go surfing all the time around the area.

As he worked on surfboards, he found different ways to try to make boards lighter, rather than shaping heavier glasses around the fins and implementing different balsa wood into the body of the boards.

“It was like a small step for mankind,” Van Swae said. “The surf industry has gone through a lot of changes—weights of boards, the types of fins and where they’re placed. They go from single to quad, sometimes guys have five fins. It enables you to do a variety of maneuvers.”

Soon after, they started experimenting with Plexiglas to make fins more durable and flexible.

“I’m always wondering how we can make the board more comfortable and trying new things,” he said. “If the board failed, then it failed. You just get back and try it again. People started putting more concave into the board and different shapes so they could ride well and generate more speed.”

For a while, Van Swae said he got into surf photography and working for Surfer Magazine, taking a break from the shaping and constructing part of the industry.

“I felt my love was in surfboards, and I realized that when I moved to Kauai for a few years,” he said.

For the most part, Van Swae said he’s constructed surfboards for people who are interested in getting out and trying the sport. He said he didn’t really make boards for “big stars” of surfing, but he

got to know them.

“Being able to take your equipment out and try it out, it’s like a wonderful toy— but more than that; it’s something that shows if you’ve improved your work more than other people,” he said.

Today, there are machines that massproduce surfboards to make the shape.

The Fly said the machines are able to complete the whole package.

“It kind of eludes the shaper, in a way,” Van Swae said. “People like them because they’re cheap. But I still like to do it the old fashioned way. I still have the same planer I had in the ’60s to make the boards. A lot of people are thankful for keeping up the tradition.”

The Fly also experimented with other devices such as the ankle leash, going from surgical elastic bands and trying various materials to find the right fit. On Tuesday, he was working on new paddles for a stand-up paddle board or outrigger canoe.

The outrigger team Van Swae joined in Dana Point, he said, was one of the fastest, as they were able to customize their own paddles and make them lighter and were able to propel the boat “a wee bit faster” than the others.

“It’s always good to win,” Van Swae said.

Interns Learn Nonprofit Management at Casa Romantica Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens selects two interns each year to participate in its Marketing and Development Internship from the beginning of the summer through Toast to the Casa in late September. Out of about 100 applicants, Emma Plotnik and Kristan Saldivar have been chosen to represent Casa Romantica’s intern program in 2016.

Plotnik is a 2016 graduate of Chapman University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in music with a minor in law, justice and social control.

She chaired her fraternity’s philanthropic department and was active on her campus as an ambassador for research facilities, a public relations member for the opera department and a participant in a highlycoveted research fellowship.

Saldivar is a senior at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where she is majoring in economics with an emphasis in marketing. Saldivar has previously interned for businesses that promote events and digital engagement.

She is currently the president and has served previously as the secretary/treasurer of her university’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

Marketing and Development interns at Casa Romantica participate in a variety of activities alongside the Casa Romantica team that introduce them to arts management in a nonprofit, including market research, donor solicitation, public relations, event coordination, visual communications, accounting, leadership training and social networking.

Fighting for Me Nonprofit to Host Fundraising Event The nonprofit organization Fighting for Me will host an event at the San Clemente Outlets to help sexual abuse survivors and their families.

Amanda Zarate, the executive director of the organization, will host a Warrior Festival for the local community. At the July 30 event, Zarate plans to take the largest ever group selfie in support of sexual abuse survivors.

All proceeds of the event will help Fighting for Me provide professional counseling for free. The entrance fee to the festival is $5. Online registration will include a raffle ticket. The festival will last from noon to 5 p.m.

After Zarate took many counseling sessions that cost thousands of dollars, she said she was inspired to create an organization with free professional counseling.

As a sexual abuse survivor, Zarate said it is safe to share your story with Fighting for Me. Fighting for Me created a campaign similar to the ALS challenge. The warpaint

campaign gives people a chance to paint red on their faces and take selfies with hashtags such as “#worthfighting4.”

Along with the event, Zarate is hoping to get support from the community to help encourage state legislation that would provide assistance to sexual abuse survivors.

The nomination period for the Nov. 8, 2016 election begins on Monday, July 18 and closes on Friday, Aug. 12 at 5 p.m. During this period, individuals may take out, circulate and file nomination papers. If an incumbent for one of the offices being voted

State of the Battalion from the 2/4 Marines

M

arines, Sailors, Families and Friends, Your Magnificent Bastards continue to raise the bar high and train in any climb or place! We have hit the ground running in the Pacific by conducting jungle training, professional military education and integrating with our new higher headquarters—the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). The weather is hot and humid in Okinawa, Japan, but our Marines and Sailors’ physical fitness and mental toughness allowed them to quickly adjust.

The highlights of this month’s training have been on the individual Marine San Clemente Times July 7-13, 2016

or Sailor’s professional development and technical training. We conducted both a Lance Corporal Seminar and a Corporals’ Course. These courses develop the Marines and Sailors to be prepared for their next promotion. We focused the curriculum on how to train, lead and communicate with subordinates and seniors.

This past month’s training focused on operating in a jungle environment. We sent a platoon-size element of leaders to the Jungle Warfare Training Center, where they graduated as jungle leaders and are putting their new patrolling, navigation and survival skills to work teaching the battalion. The companies have been

conducting patrolling exercises, urban training, and live fire events; all while integrating the training with our mechanized vehicles, boats and aircraft. Currently, we are participating in a two week MEU Exercise, honing our skills and preparing for any mission that may arise. This month alone, the Battalion promoted over 50 Marines and Sailors. We continue to maintain a high readiness level and are postured to support any mission!

Sgt. Maj. Vargas and I continue to be humbled by the outstanding work of our Marines and Sailors. They epitomize the greatness of our country. June 22 marked the 71st anniversary of the end of the BatPage 9

tle of Okinawa, one of the hardest fought battles of World War II. Since that day, Marines have never taken our presence on the island for granted. Your Marines and Sailors of Battalion Landing Team 2/4 remain focused, postured and ready to support our country in any capacity.

Grant Funding Provides Resources without Hindering City

s elected leaders of the San Clemente City Council, it is our goal to continually find ways to improve the already amazing livability of our beautiful community. However, with many competing needs, we are required to make difficult decisions on where to spend our limited resources and time in the most efficient manner.

Grant funding is an excellent way to address these needs without compromising key services. For example, grants often get expensive transportation projects off the ground and help the city of San Clemente provide improved options for our residents and visitors to get around San Clemente. Recently, the city applied for funding opportunities via grants from the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and just received approval late last month in support of these projects with substantial funding. The funding will help the city expand upon its comprehensive multimodal plan as established in its recent update of the General Plan.

The two approved projects are a first for San Clemente: a San Clemente Summer Trolley and public Rideshare program.

There have been troubling developments for families in south county that have their children enrolled in the Mandarin Immersion Program (MIP) at Bergeson Elementary school in Laguna Niguel.

MIP was founded by a San Clemente parent, and in 2011, when the program was approved by the CUSD Board of Trustees, one of the stipulations was that it be accessible to all CUSD residents and therefore be centrally located. This highly successful program will enter middle school next year, but where will it go? On April 13, the CUSD district staff recommended that the program go to Newhart Middle School in Mission Viejo, which doesn’t provide equal access, is the most northern of our middle schools and doesn’t allow for a feasible drop-off/pickup time between San Clemente Times July7-13, 2016

helping to reduced traffic. Allow me to share the highlights from these transportation options, which the city will implement next year.

Summer Trolley Service: The OCTA board CITY COUNCIL approved $1.2 million CORNER for a summer trolley in

By Tim Brown San Clemente, which will begin operations in the summer of 2017. The city is required to provide an 11 percent match for capital and 10 percent for operations and maintenance. The trolley will operate during summer weekends and special events and will connect the Pier, Metrolink train stations at Pier and North Beach, Ole Hanson Beach Club, El Camino Real, The Outlets and downtown Avenida Del Mar. The service will operate during summer weekends—Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays—for approximately 10 hours per day and will also provide special event service on the Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day. Rideshare Service: The OCTA board approved $914,400 for a Rideshare service, the first of its kind for San Clemente. The city is required to provide a 10 percent match. This project will provide yearschools for families with multiple children.

This will lead to families having to drop out of the program. To the relief of the 88 percent of families in the program that live centrally or south to it, the board voted 5-2 for Niguel Hills Middle School, upholding their promise of equal access. Keeping a centralized location for the program received public support.

Fast forward to May 25, and, as reported, “two trustees requested the middle school location to be reconsidered, pointing to about $1 million in renovations in order to house the program at Niguel Hills Middle School.” The argument swayed the board of trustees and the policy was put on hold to be reconsidered in another six months. When CUSD is asking for an $889 million bond measure to repair our neglected schools, spending $1 million to move the Mandarin program sounds wasteful, but it isn’t clear cut for the following reasons: 1. The $1 million estimate is to fix four classrooms, not the two reportedly needed for MIP. 2. Due to declining enrollment at Niguel Hills, the program wouldn’t need the extra classrooms, thus the cost would be $0 for

round transit mobility for the existing users of Bus Routes 191 and 193 following the termination of the current bus service.

It would function similar to an on-demand Uber or Lyft type services for residents.

It would use existing infrastructure and is expected to help offset the loss of key public transportation bus routes and give our residents greater mobility options in the neighborhoods where they live. The Rideshare service will also provide special events support for key holidays similar to the Summer Trolley Service.

T

he latest Roald Dahl film adaptation, The BFG, reunites the creative team behind the family sci-fi classic E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial (1982): director Steven Spielberg, screenwriter Melissa Mathison, producer Kathleen Kennedy and composer John Williams. And most importantly, it’s produced by Walt Disney Studios. So what the heck happened to make it open at only No. 4 on opening weekend?

In 1980s England, 10-year-old orphan Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) is abducted by an epically tall giant (Mark Rylance) after she spots him sneaking around outside her window. She’s then taken to his equally giant cottage in what he refers to as “Giant Country.” Very quickly, Sophie learns that the giant is actually the Big Friendly Giant and is not as menacing and cannibalistic as his fellow giants. She also discovers that the BFG is a dream catcher and can create dreams.

Despite its stellar production values, special effects and wonderfully innocent tone, The BFG is flopping.

There are a couple of reasons for this surprising outcome. One is that Fourth of July weekend is a rather peculiar time to release a movie that is so prominently English. Another is that the feature isn’t as fast-paced and plot-driven as most successful family flicks are. The BFG is essentially random scenes where the giant and Sophie hang out and experiment with his magic, and they also meet the Queen. Its target audience is the same small crowd that enjoyed Hugo (2011) or the 1980 Popeye movie, which doesn’t really make for a huge hit, even with the all the potential. SC www.sanclementetimes.com

raditions in San Clemente were in full swing on Monday, July 4. The Office Chair Races, a speakeasy event that takes place on Avenidas Victoria and Rosa in the Pier Bowl, drew hundreds of spectators, with many participants going down the hill at full speed in makeshift vehicles.

In the evening, the Condor Squadron of five AT-6 aircrafts, used as trainers in World War II, flew over the San Clemente Pier and down the coastline.

To cap off the day, the city of San Clemente hosted its annual fireworks display off the end of the San Clemente Pier. SC

In Life, Opportunity Often Arises from Adversity

T

oday’s column begins my 23rd year of writing about finding love after 50. My first column appeared on July 4, 1994, in a local Dana Point newspaper.

Back then I wasn’t a writer, just a guy who owned Tutor and Spunky’s, a Dana Point deli. On Christmas Eve, 1993, my life changed dramatically when my wife of six years—without informing me of her intentions—cleaned out the house and moved away. I was so surprised and shocked that I started keeping a journal to try to gather my thoughts.

Shortly thereafter, an unknown man came into the deli during lunchtime, and said, “Are you Tom Blake?” I smiled and said yes, thinking we had a new customer. He handed me an envelope, saying, “You are being served with divorce papers.”

Soon, I became single, free to date again. I added the events of each day to my journal.

I thought mid-life dating was going to be easy. After all, I owned ON LIFE AND a deli where lots of atLOVE AFTER 50 tractive women came in

I quickly discovered that South Orange County women had no interest in dating a newly divorced, 53-year-old guy, who was bitter at how the divorce gods had treated him. With every failed dating experience, I added to the journal.

After six months, my journal had grown to more than 100 pages. I converted it to a short story. I naively queried Playboy, Esquire and the New York Times, thinking they might be interested in a story about a divorced man’s dating woes.

Eventually, two women editors of the Dana Point paper agreed to review my material. They felt that single women in Southern California would have a field day belittling my woe-is-me, feeling-sorry-for-myself, age-50+, single-guy-can’tget-a-date saga.

The two editors gave me my first writing opportunity, and they were right. After my initial column, titled, “Home Alone with Only Dogs for Company,” appeared, a woman said: “Who is this sniveling puke?” Another said, “Get the boy a crying towel.” The column soon appeared in 10 local area newspapers and for eight years in the Orange County Register.

In June 1998, I met Greta, my life partner. Women readers told me my writ-

ing became less controversial and more palatable after she entered my life.

I’ve written approximately 3,500 articles and newsletters on finding love after 50; writing on this topic has been good to me. I’ve published four books and have been interviewed by Matt Lauer on the Today show and Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America—humbling experiences for a deli guy.

In 2011, Norb Garrett, CEO of Picket Fence Media and publisher of the Dana Point Times, San Clemente Times and The Capistrano Dispatch, invited me to write for his newspapers. In my 23 years of writing, I have never been associated with such a hard-working, friendly and warm group of people.

My writing scope has broadened from finding love after 50 to “On Life and Love after 50,” as older singles deal with personal issues often beyond the scope of just dating and seeking love.

My advice is applicable to people ages 45 to 90. Yes, I do know people in their 90s who have found love.

While my articles target singles, approximately 35 percent of my readers are married. Many tell me that reading about the hardships singles endure encourages them to appreciate their spouses more and to work harder at making their marriages last. My advice to married couples is usually pretty simple: stay together and work out the issues.

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from this writing experience: opportunity often arises from adversity, and it’s up to us as individuals to recognize the opportunity and make the best of it, although we may not see or understand it until months or years later.

Ready for Rio Q&A with Olympic sailor Paris Henken

ews coming out of Rio de Janeiro in the buildup to the 2016 Olympic Games has not all centered on the best athletes in the world descending upon the South American city for one of the world’s most popular sporting events.

Instead, much of the discussion concerning the games has revolved around health issues, like the Zika virus, politics and safety.

Olympic sailors competing in the event will face many of these concerns head on when they enter the waters of Guanabara

Bay, the games’ sailing venue. The polluted condition of the bay has been welldocumented by major news outlets onsite and has drawn criticism from the sailing community.

The fear of the Zika virus, which is transmitted via mosquitos and poses a heightened risk to pregnant women, has kept several standout American athletes from competing.

San Clemente native Paris Henken, 20, and her sailing partner, Helena Scutt, qualified to represent the United States in the 49erFX sailing class and are in Brazil preparing for the Games. The duo has been making monthly trips to Rio in order to learn the currents that swirl inside the bay.

The San Clemente Times caught up with Henken via email to get her thoughts on the growing health concerns and her preparation for competing on the world’s biggest stage.

San Clemente Times: Now that the event is so close, what emotions are going through your head right now?

Paris Henken: There are definitely lots of things going through my mind now that the Games are close. I am a bit nervous as it draws closer to the first race, but honestly the nerves are normal. I am only human and you just have to learn to control what you feel and not let it distract you. But other than the nervousness I am super excited and have been working towards this goal since junior year of high school and to know it’s so close is unbelievable.

Our training has shifted a little bit in regards to what we are focusing on. Since we for sure know we are the team that will be competing we are spending all our practice days down in Rio getting familiar with the wind and current. We are narrow-

LOCAL TENNIS CLUB SHINES AT USTA FINALS The Life Time Athletic and Tennis Club at Rancho San Clemente had two youth tennis teams compete in the United States Tennis Association’s Spring League finals on June 12.

The local club played host to the tournament, which featured 30 teams from the area.

The club’s 10’s and 12’s teams both won their respective divisions.

The club’s 10’s orange team defeated the Racquet Club of Irvine in the semifinal and defeated Irvine Valley College 17-10 in the championship match.

ing down on the aspects that we think we need to improve and so far the training has been very successful.

You’ve made several scouting trips out to Rio. What kind of advantage does that give your team?

The trips have been really good for our preparation and it’s really helpful sailing on the exact race courses that we will be racing on during the Olympics. This venue is generally very tricky because of the current and shifty wind conditions, so getting our minds prepared for the conditions during these training camps is the only way to beat the other competition.

What are your thoughts on the condition of the racing venue in Guanabara Bay? It looks like pollution in the water is a concern among sailors there.

The US Sailing Team has known of the water pollution way before it has become such a topic within the media. They have prepared not only Helena and I but the whole US Sailing Team in what to except and how to stay healthy. We support all efforts to clean up Guanabara Bay, but at this point it is a factor we can’t control.

How have you been prepared to handle the polluted waters?

If there is something in the water, we just sail around it and after sailing we just wash all equipment down with fresh water.

Simple things like keeping our hands washed are other ways we are staying healthy.

How much did you weigh the threat of the Zika virus before you made the final decision to compete in the Games?

We are also well aware of the Zika virus, but it didn’t even cross my mind in regards to if we will compete or not. It’s a bug that can be avoided with bug spray and long sleeved shirts and pants. ver the course of five days, the world’s best young surfers convened at Huntington Beach for the NSSA 2016 National Open Championships.

And unsurprisingly, local surfers did our cities proud by not only making the national championships, but winning and placing high in several competitions.

San Clemente’s Cole Houshmand continued his tear through the junior ranks with a first place finish in the U15 Open Juniors competition. Cole finished third in the Boys U18 final last week in the USA Surfing Championships. He was also named to the 2017 Junior USA Surf team.

Other top local performers at the National Open Championships included Dane Matson, of San Clemente, who finished second in the U10 Open Mini Groms competition.

Kade Matson, meanwhile, brought home third place in the U14 Explorer Boys match.

Taj Lindblad of San Clemente pulled in a fifth place finish in the packed U12 Explorer Menehune competition.

Lindblad, Matson and Matson were each the highest local finishers in their respective competitions.

San Clemente’s Kirra Pinkerton put on another sensational showing in the U14 Open Girls competition. She ended up with a solid second place.

Bethany Zelasko, of Dana Point, stood her ground in the all-ages Explorer Womens competition, taking home a fourth place finish—the highest of any local. SC

t only 9 years old, Seylah Childress of San Juan Capistrano has already surfed and skated around the

world.

“I always loved the water, and I started surfing when I was 6,” Seylah said. “I started with my uncle. He took me out on the surfboard at Doheny.”

Doheny is still a favorite spot—as is San Onofre—but Seylah says she’s had great experiences surfing in New Zealand and

Australia. As part of a big surfing family, her love of riding the world’s best waves was born into her.

“It’s like what we do,” Seylah says of her family and surfing.

Seylah says she’s made friends out on the waves, and has also potentially found her career calling out there, too—she wants to be a marine biologist.

“Just because I love the ocean and I love the animals in the ocean,” she said, adding that her favorite subject in school is, fittingly, science.

Seylah also starred in her school’s—St. Anne—production of Alice in Wonderland last year, and hopes to continue the theater arts through high school.
