Fighting for Me Nonprofit to Host Fundraising Event THE LATEST: Members of a nonprofit organization that raises awareness for support of sexual abuse survivors will host an event—the Warrior Festival—at the Outlets at San Clemente on Saturday, July 30. The founder and executive director of the organization, Amanda Zarate, said the group plans to take the largest-ever group selfie in support of sexual abuse survivors.

“Fighting for Me created a campaign similar to the ALS challenge,” Zarate said.

“The war paint campaign gives people a chance to paint red on their faces and take selfies with hashtags such as “#worthfighting4.”

Zarate said she hopes the campaign will give a voice to people who are afraid to come forward and help combat sexual assault.

Along with the event, Zarate hopes to get support from the community to help encourage state legislation that would provide assistance to sexual abuse survivors.

She started the program in 2012.

“I got it off the ground by speaking with people, and one person would give me information and advice, another person had time to see clients, and we have a network of people who made it possible,” Zarate said.

Zarate said she is a sexual abuse survivor herself.

“When I went to see a therapist, it was incredibly expensive and it takes a long time to get through all the trauma,” she said. “I knew instantly I wanted to help other sexual abuse survivors and make it easier for them to overcome the obstacles and barriers they have to live a happy life.

When your dignity and your voice and your humanity have been stripped away from you, it’s almost impossible.”

Zarate said she wants to thank Argosy University-Orange County campus for financially backing the event.

Report Claims SONGS Officials Pushed Power Plant Beyond its Means in 2012 THE LATEST: Public Watchdogs, an organization that has been advocating the removal of spent nuclear fuel at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and following activity of the now-shuttered plant, released a statement on July 19 asserting they believe the plant operators mishandled the steam generators that failed and ultimately caused the closure of the power plant.

Vinod Arora, a former Southern California Edison engineer, obtained documents from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission through a records request that he claims shows data that proves the power plant operators pushed the system past its capacity. Arora stated the failure of the generators is the fault of SONGS operators.

“Edison knew they were pushing San Onofre’s steam generators past the original design limit, but did it anyway for the sake of short term profits and to correct other design deficiencies as a result of SCE’s unverified analytical assumptions,” Arora stated in his press release. “SCE was forced to make those assumptions because of time pressures to deploy the generators quickly.

As a result, SCE failed to perform the necessary research or ask the critical questions required to understand the impact of their design changes between the original and replacement steam generators. SCE successfully covered up the fact that it dodged a required NRC License review for safety.”

SCE has disputed the claims by Public Watchdogs, saying their information does not represent what happened to the generators in 2012, when a nuclear leak was caused and started the shutdown of SONGS in 2013.

“Southern California Edison is aware of the press release issued (July 19) regarding the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station closure,” the statement read. “The press release relies on comments by a former San Onofre employee who is simply

misinformed.

“As far back as September 2013, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission identified flaws in how Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) used its computer codes to design the failed steam generators at San Onofre. The commission further issued a ‘Notice of Non-Conformance’ against MHI for its flawed computer modeling in the failed design.”

The statement continues to say MHI did not accurately analyze the thermal hydraulic conditions in the steam generators, which caused the leak in 2012.

Six Suspects Charged in San Juan Capistrano Murder Case THE LATEST: Six defendants—including three San Juan Capistrano residents— were charged on Monday, July 25, with stabbing and murdering 38-year-old Alvaro Rios of Perris, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s office. Rios was found dead in a San Juan Capistrano creek bed on July 13.

Anjelica Shibata, 28, of San Juan Capistrano; Ashkan Dezhangfard, 21, of San Juan Capistrano; Brion Hyde, 22, of San Juan Capistrano; Siavish Hosseinaliarhani, 18, of Laguna Niguel; Ryan Huebner, 20, of Laguna Niguel; and Myles Jones, 22, of Laguna Hills, have each been charged with one felony count of “special circumstances murder by lying in wait,” according to OCDA prosecutors. Five of the defendants were arrested July 22 by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s undercover and SWAT teams.

Prosecutors said Shibata was in a romantic relationship with the victim. She is accused of luring Rios to an abandoned area of San Juan while the other defendants waited for them to arrive.

San Clemente Teens Attend National Youth Leadership Initiative San Clemente High School students Jonathon Magana, Peyton Lee, Zulma Diaz and Kyle Stevens joined 200 youth from around the country to take part in the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America’s (CADCA) youth-led, adult-guided civic engagement training, the National Youth Leadership Initiative (NYLI), where they learned how to become drug prevention advocates and powerful community leaders. The Wellness & Prevention Coalition invited the youth to attend along with four adults as part of the Coalition’s Drug Free Communities mentor/mentee program administered by the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency.

The training event covered a wide range of topics – everything from how to prevent prescription drug abuse and reduce heroin use to how to create tobacco-free environments, reduce impaired driving and develop policies to reduce marijuana use, synthetic drug use and underage drinking.

The adults and youth worked together to develop an action plan for the youth to address as part of the larger coalition.

Brig. Gen. Kevin Killea Takes Command of Camp Pendleton Brig. Gen. Edward D. Banta relinquished command of Marine Corps Installations West, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, to Brig. Gen. Kevin J. Killea during a change of command ceremony at Camp Pendleton’s Ranch House, July 15.

Banta assumed command of MCI-West, MCB Camp Pendleton in August 2014.

Under his command, MCI-West earned several energy-related honors, including a Secretary of the Navy Energy and Water Management Platinum-Level Award.

In a letter from the Gen. Robert Neller, Commandant of the Marine Corps, Banta’s vision and focus to align MCI-West Installations and ranges with I Marine Expeditionary Force combat readiness requirements enabled Marines and Sailors, preparing to deploy, to achieve dynamic and realistic training across the Southwest

United States.

“It’s all about training Marines and taking care of families and making sure we have all the resources to not only do that now but to do that in the future,” Banta said about the mission of MCIWest, MCB Camp Pendleton.

Banta’s next assignment is as Chief, CJ4 in support of Resolute Support Mission. Resolute Support is a NATO-led training, advisory and counter-terror mission based in Afghanistan.

Killea comes to Camp Pendleton from US Central Command where he served as the chief of staff, Combined Joint Task Force—Operation Inherent Resolve.

“When I was touring around with Gen. Banta, for the last three days, I got a real sense of a briskness, of a hop and a step to this organization and its obviously the result of a commitment and a professional approach to the mission,” Killea said. “I will ensure that that commitment is maintained.”

In attendance were distinguished military guests which included Lt. Gen. David H. Berger, Maj. Gen. Lewis A. Craparotta, Brig. Gen. Thomas Weidley and Rear Adm. Markham Rich.

Many state and local government officials also attended the ceremony including Oceanside Mayor, Jim Wood, and San Clemente Mayor, Bob Baker.

In lieu of the traditional presentation of flowers to the outgoing and incoming generals’ spouses, Molly Banta and Kathleen Killea elected to have a donation made to the Fisher House Foundation and the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund to continue to support Marines and their families.

MCI-West’s primary mission is training, sustaining and making deploymentready Marines and to provide families with services that enrich their lives. The command is comprised of five Marine Corps installations: Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow in California and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz. City to Host Workshop on Cost of Service for Water Rates Carollo Engineering was hired by the city to conduct a comprehensive costof-service and water rate study for the city’s water utility. As part of that study, city staff and representatives from Carollo Engineering will conduct a public workshop to provide an overview of the city’s cost-of-service and Water Rate Study process and timeline, the city’s current water rate structure, and water rate structure methodologies commonly used by other water agencies in Cali-

CHOC Los Niños Guild Now Meets at the Outlets On June 20, the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Los Niños Guild held its final meeting of the fiscal year at the Outlets at San Clemente VIP. The members will host all board and general meetings in this facility next year.

Members said the size of the venue will allow the organization to grow and they hope to attract more members who are interested in promoting CHOC at Mission Hospital.

Fighting On Relay for Life celebrated in San Clemente, raises funds for research

C

ancer continues to claim millions of lives each year.

As scientists and society learn more and more about the disease, it still afflicts those closest to us. To help fund the efforts in finding a cure, Relay for Life is held annually at various locations around the world.

According to San Clemente Relay for Life organizers, more than 15 million people participate in events each year, worldwide.

Teams of people and individuals walk and run laps in support of the cause, spend the night and do more laps in the morning to complete the 24-hour event.

At night, a slideshow honoring those who died as a result of cancer was shown along with a luminaria.

Brian Hannigan, a co-coordinator of the San Clemente Relay for Life, said the event has grown a lot since its beginning.

“Every year it gets bigger, stronger, and what impressed me is that the young kids who have grown up with the event are now starting to take leadership roles and become more involved in a bigger way, he said.” “Grant Meyer is one great example.

He’s been involved since he was a little kid. This year he took the lead as team chair to get out all the information and help get them going. His leadership skills have really come together. He’s a young man now and is dedicated to this cause.”

Hannigan said there are many other young people who are following the same lead.

“I think what’s most important is we have the funding and the research and it keeps helping, but what’s most important to me is preventing it to begin with, eating healthy, exercising and being of sound mind,” Hannigan said. “Past the point of that is going to American Cancer Society and help find new treatments and cures. I could just post on Facebook ‘I support you,’ or I could come out and really do something about it.”

Hannigan has had firsthand experience with losing loved ones to cancer.

“When I was 5 years old, my father passed away from cancer, but I never forgot him, and that’s a big part of Relay is to celebrate, remember and fight back, he said.” “My mom is a two-time cancer survivor. I have another aunt who is a survivor and I have an uncle who is a survivor. It’s been all around in the family and I have many friends who are going through the same thing.”

Connie Voris, the mother of Saylor Voris, a SCHS student who died from a rare form of cancer in 2015, spoke to audience members during the beginning of the event about Relay for Life and how it helped her and her family.

“We’ve met so many wonderful people, and we tried to spread the word about cancer,” Voris said. “I asked Saylor, ‘Why do you like to do Relay for Life?’ And she said, ‘If people can fight (cancer) so hard to survive, we can stay up 24 hours.’”

Voris said she has heard many stories about families who lost loved ones to cancer, and she said she wondered how they moved forward with their life afterward.

“Now I know that these wonderful

people, like the ones here today, were the same ones stepping up to help my family and Saylor’s battle with cancer,” she said.

“Cancer touches most of all of us, and we have the responsibility to help others.

Saylor, Sam and I had no idea those nine years of volunteering for Relay for Life would become our own personal battle.”

San Clemente has hosted Relay for Life at the high school for the last eight years but the event has taken place 14 years.

This year, organizers said there were 38 teams that participated in the event to raise money for cancer research.

As of Wednesday, July 27, the event had raised more than $51,000 from San Clemente’s event, according to the Relay for Life website.

Dave Robinson has been involved in the event since its beginning through his church. He now helps organize the event each year.

“I think we’ve really built a core of people who are very interested in making sure it survives as an event,” Robinson said. “The first few years it was kind of hit-and-miss. But we’ve built a real strong team, and that’s continued to grow, especially in the last 10 years. It’s been very stable and we’ve had a lot of good community support.”

Robinson said the San Clemente Relay for Life has grown exponentially with fundraising. He said more newcomers join the event each year.

Robinson said he was diagnosed with prostate cancer years ago.

“I went through three surgeries, chemotherapy and hormone therapy, and about six years ago I had completely (beaten) cancer,” Robinson said. “The year before I was diagnosed, my wife walked in Relay for Life.

So it was kind of serendipitous. We’ve been involved in creating a support group at the San Clemente Presbyterian Church.”

Getting a second opinion and finding a good doctor are keys to helping someone beat cancer, Robinson said.

“The first thing is you have to get a good medical oncologist; regardless of what cancer you have you may need chemotherapy or surgery, but you need to find a good one, he said.” “You need to make sure they’re a medical oncologist.

Once you’ve done that you really just need to educate yourself, be willing to ask a million questions. The doctors are so busy treating the disease, they don’t have time to sit there and explain everything to you, but they will if you ask.”

Robinson said if test results come back benign, people should still keep an eye on the situation and get tested again. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the state of California, he said.

Lynn Wilton, who participated in this year’s San Clemente Relay, has had her own experiences with cancer as well as with family members suffering from the disease.

“My husband passed away with cancer, and in the years after that I developed colon cancer,” Wilton said.

Fortunately for Wilton, she didn’t need chemotherapy, but she said you have to get rest and maintain a positive attitude.

“Find the best doctor available, and just be positive, and a good result will come most of the time,” she said. “But I’m doing good. I’ve been in remission about 10 years and I’m having my 85th birthday this year, and I’ll see you next year.”

HAC Addresses Root of Community Issues

I

n June, I attended the City Council interviews for new appointments to the various city Commissions and Committees serving San Clemente. As usual, the quality of applicants was excellent, and having served on the Planning Commission I knew this would be the case. However, this year I was particularly impressed with the experience, qualifications and interest of the applicants for the Human Affairs Committee. Individually, and as a group, they were LEW’S VIEWS truly outstanding. Three

The Human Affairs Committee does not have the same visibility as the various other commissions, largely due to their place and role in the city’s governmental structure. The commissions have distinct ongoing responsibilities in day-to-day operations and city decisions. The HAC, on the other hand, operates strictly as an advisory body to the City Council.

However, when considering the breadth of HAC interests, it can be suggested that it can have a “direct effect” on more local citizens than any of the other groups short

of the City Council.

The stated purpose of the HAC is to act as a catalyst and advisory body to the City Council in the assessment of human needs and issues. They track trends and needs and assist in identifying resources to meet those needs. Specifically, they are tasked with assisting in the resolution of social needs in the areas of affordable housing, welfare/safety of the homeless, innovation in mental health care, elder abuse, youth safety, transportation needs, foster care resources and employment opportunities for the unemployed.

Clearly, they have a big responsibility.

I would suggest that while the majority of our population does not fit directly into the above population segments, these segments actually have some impact on every citizen of San Clemente—if not physically and direct, then on property values, safety, etc.

The most recent and visible activity of the HAC is supporting the development of a nonprofit group called the “San Clemente Village.” This is an identifiable and tangible organization of citizens devoted to assistance to the elderly and handicapped in the areas of transportation, medical care assistance, friendship, etc. This can be followed on the city website.

I see a continued and even expand-

ing role for the HAC in San Clemente in such areas as expanded areas of interest, more publicity and visibility of activities and meetings, increased citizen involvement, and possible subcommittees. As indicated above the HAC serves not only the elderly, but young people as well. One of the issues brought up by applicants was the well-being of our young people after school and beyond their participation in organized athletic activities etc.

The HAC meets every other month at the San Clemente Community Center downtown at the corner of Del Mar and Seville. Their next meeting is Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 3 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. HAC welcomes attendance and public input.

Perhaps the offering is suitable for gift buyers. Only a knowledgeable coin collector can determine its collection value. But we can easily calculate how this stacks up as a bullion investment.

One the date of the ad, July 20, 2016, the world price of silver closed at $19.44 per ounce, so that the three ounces contained in the coins were worth $58.32.

At the “special introductory price of just $74.90,” a buyer is paying $16.58 more than actual value, a 28.43 percent premium. This is not the way to invest in silver bullion.

You might note that silver values pop up and down on an irregular basis. Back in February 1980, the price of an ounce topped out at $106.74. Fast forward a couple decades to July 2001, you could only get $5.64 for the same ounce. As recently as March 2011, that ounce had risen to $40.18. Today it’s less than half that value. Where it will be heading over the next few years, who knows?

It’s clear that precious metals marketers are combing the bushes in search of gullible shoppers. Will they find enough of them to keep the charade going? To

At the Movies: Pleasant Enough Company with ‘Café Society’

t’s sad and slightly humorous when a talented filmmaker grows a reputation for making more misses than hits after years of success—that when a new film of theirs comes out, you think “Well, it wasn’t terrible.” In Woody Allen’s case, his newest effort, Café Society, is decent, but not great either.

It’s no charmer like Midnight in Paris (2011), but not dull like Magic in the Moonlight (2014). Despite its silly title, Café Society has its moments.

(Jesse Eisenberg) moves to Hollywood, where his uncle Phil (Steve Carell) runs a movie studio, and quickly begins running odd jobs around town. Phil’s secretary Vonnie (Kristen Stewart) also becomes fast friends with Bobby, fitting his desire for a girlfriend. Back in Bobby’s home state, New York, his brother Ben (Corey Stoll) is attempting to replace his life of crime with owning a nightclub.

Blake Lively and Anna Camp make appearances. The mid-20th century is always a favorite period of Allen’s to set his stories, and here it’s clear he’s having fun

name dropping all the old Hollywood stars and directors, though it does get a bit redundant even if he’s aware of it. Eisenberg as the “Woody” character here is a predictable choice, but it works, while Stewart is the shocking highlight and doesn’t feel out of place in the era set. The two leads have a comfortable presence with each other, most likely because they’ve acted before together. Café Society is safe and basic by Allen’s standards, but still worthy of a lazy afternoon viewing. SC

On Stage at the Coach House: Anuhea

B

orn an island girl of Maui, Rylee Anuheake’alaokalokelani Jenkins, better known as Anuhea, has rocked reggae’s world for the better.

Starting at a boarding school, Anuhea showcased her talents as she taught herself how to play guitar and write her own songs.

“We would print out guitar chords to Bob Marley and Jack Johnson songs at school, then skip water polo practice to go back to the dorms and jam them,” Anuhea wrote on her website. “Once I got the basic idea of guitar, I then started writing my own songs.”

As she entered college, studying film at Chapman University, Anuhea realized her passion for music. After a year at Chapman, she left the university and traveled to Australia. She then came back to the islands to play in small coffee shops until she put a band together with friends.

Starting on her own, she marketed herself and acted as her own manager. By taking recordings from a live taping for a public radio station, Anuhea created her first demo CD titled “Rough Cuts.” This album then got discovered by a manager and record label co-owner named Warren Wyatt, who started her full time career.

Hot spice and crispyedged fish, with sweet and salty sauce. Cool avocado and tuna complement each other in texture and temperature. Adversity Inspires San Clemente Woman to Write a Book

Miramar Theatre is Last Large Frontier of North Beach ‘Renaissance’

he underlying message in my previous article—opportunity often arises from adversity—struck a chord with several readers.

A San Clemente resident named Karen, who has had heavy adversity in her life, emailed a response that inspired me.

She wrote, “Your last article focusing on opportunity and adversity had an impact on me. I fit your over-50 profile.”

Karen married her college sweetheart the summer after they graduated in 1976. They had two sons. She loved being a homemaker.

She said, “My husband Mike climbed the corporate ladder. Our ON LIFE AND lifestyle got bigger and LOVE AFTER 50 better. Then Mike was

By Tom Blake diagnosed with cancer at age 39 and was given three to four years to live. That was unacceptable to us. We’d heard about bone marrow transplantation and decided to go for it. So we swapped the death sentence for a life sentence.

“Mike’s goal was to help his young sons grow to manhood. He lived for 18 years after the transplant. He lost the career, so we swapped roles and I became the bread winner. Forget about feminism and the women’s movement; it was time for me to change gears and pay some bills.

“At age 56, I was widowed. I had two amazing sons, a promising career, good health and a tremendous desire to live my life to its fullest. I took care of myself, attended support groups, and eventually found myself leading them.

“After a few years, I had revved up the career, joined Match.com, gained two beautiful daughters-in-law, changed careers, joined networking groups, sold the house and moved to the beach. I had two astounding grandbabies, traveled, dated some wonderful men, retired and got active in Toastmasters and Rotary. I worked my body and mind four to five times per week, gave motivational speeches, joined Meetup.com and cherished some unbelievable friends.”

Karen said her friends often told her she should write a book. But she balked—she felt people wouldn’t want to read about her sad story, even though she had overcome adversity.

Donovan, died of cancer last summer at age 37. Adversity? I got it. Sometimes, I think I’m way overqualified in the adversity department.

“Your article, ‘In Life, Opportunity Often Arises from Adversity,’ made me think maybe I should write a book—not only for myself, but for others. I believe I have the passion and the ability to write. I was sitting in sunlight when I started this message. Now I’m in the dark.

“I could use some advice. Have you ever thought about mentoring someone?”

I responded to Karen: “Yes, you are ‘overqualified’ in the adversity department. My heart goes out to you, and your courage with what you have been through.

“Sometimes we don’t see the opportunity that arises until time has passed, and that is what is happening with you. It likely is time for you to write your book.

“You have walked the walk, losing both your husband and son. You are an expert on this topic. Writing can be cathartic and helpful to you and to others who have faced adversity or are doing so now. Plus, you are energetic and have a creative way with words.

“As far as mentoring you in writing, yes, I can help get you started in the right direction.”

Karen said she will start writing; she already has a working title for a book.

She explained how that came about: “Last summer I was sitting in the street at a small-town parade with my 2-year-old grandson sitting in my lap. He was so darned excited to see another vehicle with flashing lights. Out of his beautiful mouth: ‘Nana, look at what’s coming!’ Yep, that’s the title: Look at What’s Coming.”

orth Beach is going through a Renaissance. San Clemente has the world-class beach trail, the restored and successful Casino San Clemente, Ellie’s Table, the opening of the delicious Shwack Cantina, La Colombiana restaurant, Los Molinos Art District, a restored Ole Hanson’s Beach Club, over 300 homes valued at $1 million-plus on Marblehead, and, of course, the Outlets at San Clemente.

What is missing? The restored and revitalized Miramar Theatre!

Over the years we have seen three-plus story plans on top of the bowling alley with timeshares, hotels and condos with underground parking garages. None of these plans have made their way to the Planning Department or through the process. In fact, there has never been an application.

The current owners realized that a larger and more intense development would be problematic and are now planning a less intensive plan, which is a huge win for the city and North Beach.

Over the past three months, a group of people and I have been working with the owners of the Miramar to present plans.

Although I am a volunteer without compensation of any type, I will be recusing myself as a Planning Commissioner when it comes before that body. I have been very passionate, and it is part of my DNA to see this historic building revitalized and reused. After I left City Council after 12 years in 2010, a revitalized Miramar was a goal, but the owners were not ready to move forward. Now, they are motivated.

So what are the plans?

The Miramar will be a performing arts and event center, and the rebuilt Bowling Alley will be a number of culinary specialty restaurants with a courtyard similar to Cedar Creek’s courtyard. Preliminary plans will be presented to the City Council on Tuesday, Aug. 2 during oral communications. The plan is to submit a formal

The Miramar owners are now requesting the same process as the Casino. This is the start of a process that requires a CEQA analysis, Planning Commission, City Council and California Coastal Commission approvals. This will not be an easy task or process and it will take committed owners and a committed city to make this work. Plans will most likely change as we go through the process. As with any project, everyone needs to be flexible and committed. But this is finally a start and an exciting one.

uring the early 1960s, folk music was enjoying a revival in popularity, one that would launch the singer/ songwriter genre throughout the decade and spill over into the next generation.

About 50 years later, folk music once again made a meteoric rise, but this time it had help from artists who infused new technology, creating homey lyrics that weren’t afraid to chime in tandem with alternative rock, giving light to the Americana genre.

From San Clemente, the movement is joined by The Moon Police.

Brent William Samson, the drummer, said The Moon Police incorporate many different genres, including Americana, worldly inspiration and, in some cases, classic French stylings.

The band came together from two duos with Grace Freeman and Samson and singer/songwriter Sasha Evans and Douglas Miller, a violinist from Laguna Beach who is also a well-known painter. The group played a show together and realized they had a sound they could formulate into The Moon Police.

“After one song we decided to merge the band,” Samson said. “Shane, our bass player, came on board just in time to finish the album, The Lost Go Sailing By.

Freeman, an 18-year-old singer/songwriter and San Clemente High School graduate, projects a soft but powerful voice across many of the album’s primary songs. They are accompanied by what the band puts together during impromptu rehearsals.

Samson said the band hopes to perform in larger venues in the future but has already booked a few local festivals.

The show at Cabrillo Playhouse will take place at 7 p.m. on Aug. 6. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at www.cabrilloplayhouse.org under “Events.”

Felipe (Phil) Lugo, Jr. Felipe (Phil) Lugo, Jr., 60, of San Clemente, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on July 16, 2016, after a valiant battle against Alzheimer’s Disease. He was the son of Felipe and Raquel Lugo.

Phil Lugo was born in New York, New York on December 19, 1955. Phil graduated from Rutgers University in June of 1973. He was later commissioned as a 1st Lt. in the United States Marine Corps in July of 1977 and was assigned to the Camp Pendleton Military Police Battalion. After an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, Phil entered the California Highway Patrol Academy on January 12, 1981. After graduating from the Academy on May 28th, 1981, Phil was assigned to the Capistrano Area office.

He promoted to Sergeant on April 1st, 1988. Phil received the Medal of Valor in 1999 for his bravery, courage, and gallantry in saving a woman’s life attempting to commit suicide on a freeway overpass. During his career, he unselfishly served his community with great integrity and distinction. Phil retired on December 31, 2011 after 30 years of service.

He is survived by his loving wife Teresa Lugo of 36 years, two daughters, Ricci Chila (Matt), and Lindsay Eggen (Mike), four grandchildren, Cooper, Cash, Cade, Olivia, and a baby granddaughter due September 1st. He is also survived by his mother, Raquel Lugo and, sister Dorinda Lugo. He was preceded in death by his father, Felipe Lugo.

A Celebration of Phil’s life will be held on Friday, July 29th at 3:00 PM at the Capo Beach Church, 25975 Domingo Avenue, Capistrano Beach, CA 92624. A private graveside burial will be held August 2nd at 11:00 AM at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, CA. Lesneski Mortuary is entrusted with services. Local pitcher named Appalachian League player of the week

After three days of competition, the San Clemente Municipal Golf Course’s Men’s Club crowned its club champion on July 17.

The new club champion, Mark Warman, carded rounds of 68, 69 and 65 for a collective score of 202 (-14) to earn the first-place trophy. Warman led the tournament from wire-to-wire and cruised to an eight-shot victory. Casey Strohsahl finished second and Greg Schweitzer placed third.

Brendan Thomas walked away with the net club championship after posting a two-round score of 136 (-8). Keith Yanke and Gary Klasse finished second and third, respectively, in the net championship.

hen discussing his recent success on the pitcher’s mound, Kolby Allard likes to bring up the word “routine.” For the hard-throwing left-handed pitcher out of San Clemente High School who was drafted by the Atlanta Braves with the 14th overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, the word has more than one meaning.

Allard refers to settling into a routine while on the mound, trusting the mechanics and know-how that have served him well in two seasons of professional baseball. It also refers to the nuances of becoming a pro ballplayer, which involves navigating one’s way through a long and daunting season. For pitchers, routine is everything. Every five days they wake up knowing they will take the ball and be tasked with putting their team in a position to win.

In 44 1/3 innings for both the Danville and Rome Braves, it’s safe to assume Allard has settled into an effective routine.

Allard was named the Appalachian League’s player of the week for games played from July 11 to July 17 while with Danville, the Braves’ rookie ball team. The 18-year-old was brilliant in his two starts and did not allow an earned run in 12 innings pitched. Allard surrendered just six hits and three walks and struck out 14 over the stretch.

Following the dominant run, Allard was promoted to the Class-A Rome Braves last week.

The recent success was just a matter of time for Allard, whose pro career got off to a bit of a rocky start.

He threw well for the Braves’ rookie ball affiliate in the Gulf Coast League, but a lingering issue with his back forced the organization to shut him down for the last stretch of the season. In early September of 2015, Allard had surgery and spent the offseason rehabbing. It took him a while to get back into the swing of things and Allard said he was “chomping at the bit” to get back onto the field. But the Braves preached patience.

When he returned to the mound in early June, and as the innings piled up, Allard returned to form.

He was sent to Rome for a brief stint in early June, but after three mediocre starts, he was sent back to Danville. In Danville, San Clemente Times July 28-August 3, 2016

Allard feasted on opposing batters. He made five starts, compiling a 3-0 record, and left with a sparkling 1.32 ERA. He never allowed more than two earned runs in a start and in his three victories, never allowed a run to cross the plate.

In his return to the Rome Braves’ rotation on July 22, Allard pitched five innings and allowed just one run but did not factor into the decision. He was scheduled to start for Rome against the Greenville Drive on July 27. Results were not available at press time.

The injury may have pushed his timetable back a few months, but Allard has more than made up for lost time.

“When I first came back (from surgery) I was a little bit rusty after not pitching for a good amount of months. Now that I’ve got some innings under my belt I’m throwing the ball well,” Allard said. “Every time you can go out there every five days and take the ball and get on a routine, you can

Sheckler Takes the Title at Dew Tour Long Beach

or the 15th time in his career, San Clemente’s Ryan Sheckler hoisted a first-place Dew Tour trophy following a spectacular performance in front of a large crowd in Long Beach on July 23.

Sheckler was competing in the event’s Pro Competition, which featured 18 of the best skaters in the world competing on four different courses: tech, bowl, rail and gap.

Sheckler’s total score of 364.33 landed him a spot at the top of the podium while Louie Lopez (356.98) took second and Ryan Decenzo (344.66) took third.

Sheckler, known for being one of the best street skaters in the world, held his own in the bowl and tech sections but boosted his score on the rails course. In the third heat of rails, Sheckler landed a Cab backslide and a backslide lipslide across the course’s longest rail for a high score.

Only six skaters piled up enough points to compete in the contest’s final section— the gap course. Sheckler, who entered the gap section with the lead, landed a big

backslide flip to seal the win.

“I love Long Beach. I love all the fans that came out. I’m so stoked,” Sheckler said following his win. “The whole vibe of the contest is so different than other competitions. It’s so relaxed, so laid back. I put in a lot of hard work, but just tried my best to stay focused.”

Sheckler also competed for Plan B in the Dew Tour’s new Team Challenge contest, which took place on July 24.

The Team Challenge consisted of nine skateboard companies fielding teams to determine an overall champion. Each team sent a representative into one of the course’s four sections to try and rack up as many points as possible. Sheckler and Plan B placed third in the Team Challenge behind bLind (first place) and FL!P (second place).

San Clemente’s Greyson Fletcher also competed throughout the weekend.

Fletcher was a member of the Element team during the Team Challenge, along with San Juan Capistrano’s Nyjah Huston.

OBITUARY to San Clemente, CA where they lived for over 40 years. Dan started his own independent insurance agency Dan Gorman Insurance and later Mission Viejo Insurance. In 1970 Dan received his ‘CLU’ Chartered Life Underwriter designation and in 1982 the designation of ‘CIC’ Certified Insurance Counselor.

Dan was president of the San Clemente Kiwanis Club in 1974-75 and was very active in the community.

Dans hobbies were golf, travel, snow & water skiing, fishing and flying his airplane.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents James & Helen Gorman, brothers James A. Gorman, Jr., Ronald Richard Gorman and John ‘Jack’ Gorman.

Dan is survived by his wife of 55 years Barbara Gorman of Sanger, TX. Children: son Dan Jr. (Sue) of San Clemente, CA; daughter Dana Ann Stephens (Ron) of San Clemente, CA and daughter Christiane ‘Christie’ McClary (Ty) of Valley View, TX. Grandchildren: Reilly & Bridget Gorman, Rachel & Shawn Stephens and Marley Mae McClary.

There will be a memorial service held for Dan on Saturday, July 30th 11:00AM at Talega Life Church, 1040 Calle Negocio, San Clemente, CA 92673

Hurley Pro Wildcard Spot Filled as US Open Continues

Thursday: Lingering South Southern Hemi swell gets some assistance from SE/S tropical swell, as small Northwest windswell blends in. Better breaks through the region are in the thigh-waist-chest high (2-3’+) zone, with occasional sets going shoulder high+ (4’+) for summer focal points around the favored tides. I

t’s been an eventful week for competitive San Clemente surfers. As one local pro earned a wildcard spot for the September Hurley Pro Event, other San Clemente groms and seasoned surfers progressed through the Vans US Open of Surfing Men’s Qualifying Series and Pro Junior competitions.

Tanner Gudauskas, 28, of San Clemente won the local pro wildcard spot at the Hurley Pro Trials and will have a chance to compete in the Hurley Pro Championship Tour (CT) event at Lower Trestles. The trials for the wildcard spot took place in the morning and into the afternoon at T-Street on Wednesday, July 20.

“The camaraderie at the beach was awesome. I feel super stoked I get to represent that group (of locals),” Gudauskas said. “I couldn’t believe how everyone was surfing.”

The trials were split into two separate contests, one composed of Hurley team riders, and one for local pros, each group competing for one wildcard spot into the Hurley Pro CT event.

On the local side, Gudauskas and his brother, Patrick, along with Ian Crane, Griffin Colapinto, Nate Yeomans and Evan Geiselman were some of the San Clemente surfers who competed for the local wildcard spot.

NOLAN SENN

hether he’s competing for a spot on the podium at a tournament in Hawaii or just riding the waves at Trestles, Nolan Senn loves to be in the surf line.

Nolan, 8, has been surfing since he was 4 years old. His father, Jason, is the coach and operator of the Endless Summer Surf Camp at San Onofre.

“I started learning with my dad, and he’s been helping me work on turns and airs,” Nolan said.

Last week he competed in a Huntington Beach tournament and placed fourth in his division at the Groms Rule competition at Ocean Festival on July 17.

He also competed in the Town and County Surf (T&C) in Hawaii earlier this year.

wildcard spot for his team and will compete with Gudauskas and other WSL CT surfers at the Hurley Pro. Gudauskas holds the No. 18 rank in the WSL Qualifying Series (QS), and is also competing in the Men’s US Open of Surfing this week.

He said the Vans US Open of Surfing is the highest rated QS event.

“That’s why we’re up here, to give it our best effort, before and after, and I’m really hoping to do well,” he said.

US Open Men’s Pro Junior and Men’s Events

Cole Houshmand of San Clemente had a strong start as he took first in both his heats in the Men’s Pro Junior Round 1 and Round 2. Houshmand won Round 2 by 3.40 points.

Round 3 took place on July 28.

ing is learning and getting better at his technique. He has surfed in New Zealand, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Brazil and Costa Rica.

Despite his passport being thoroughly stamped, he said his favorite spot to surf is still at his home break at Trestles with his friends.

His primary goals for the future are to be invited to the World Surf League like his favorite surfer, Gabriel Medina.

His mother, Elenice, said Nolan is very passionate about surfing, but he enjoys having fun with the sport more than he seeks to be competitive. Nolan’s parents were both professional surfers—Jason was on the San Clemente High School team and US National Surf team.

“He’s very passionate about it, and he’s a very good motivator to his friends and encourages everybody,” Elenice said. “The passion I see from him is about having fun more than being the best surfer. He’s very proud of his dad and wants to be like him.”

Nolan competed in a few Western Surf-

fin and Crosby Colapinto and Kade Matson finished strong in their heats during Rounds 1 and 2 of the Men’s Pro Junior event. Kobayashi, Griffin Colapinto and Cole Houshmand made it through Round 2 and into the quarter-finals, which were scheduled to take place on July 28. Results were not available at press time.

“The waves were super fun, but I’m just trying to keep that No. 1 seed going,” Kobayashi said after placing second in his Round 2 heat on July 24. “It’s pretty awesome to see the whole San Clemente crew doing well, and we’re all supporting each other.”

For the US Open Men’s event, Griffin Colapinto, Kolohe Andino, Tanner Gudauskas, Patrick Gudauskas and Nate Yeoman’s all punched their tickets into Round 3 with strong performances in the early rounds.

On July 28, Patrick Gudauskas and Andino were eliminated in the third round.
