The last figures provided by the city to the San Clemente Times showed an average of 60 riders per hour at each stop. The requirement for the city to maintain its grant from the Orange County Transportation Authority, which funds most of the trolley’s needs, is 10 per hour.

WHAT’S NEXT: Taking no immediate action, Mayor Kathy Ward said she would like to revisit the discussion following the end of the season when the city will receive its final data on ridership. Brown Finds Paul Walker Statue as Protectorate; Hamm Challenges ‘Bodhi’ to Surf-Off THE LATEST: At the tail end of Tuesday’s City Council meeting, member Tim Brown provided statistics that showed a correlation between when the Paul Walker statue pitch from “Chad and Bodhi,” who became internet-famous after proposing the erection of the statue, was denied and when shark sightings started in San Clemente.

At the meeting, Brown displayed a small statue of Walker and said since he’s owned the statue, the shark sightings decreased.

Brown said he spent an “unhealthy” amount of money trying to find the figurine online.

San Clemente Doctor’s License Put on Probation THE LATEST: The Medical Board of California placed San Clemente-based family medicine practitioner Eva Gentile, M.D., on seven years of medical licensure probation following her guilty plea of aiding unlicensed medical practices.

The practices revolved around other respondents to the case having made fraudulent insurance claims as well as committing unlicensed medical practices, according to court documents. The people

City Council Authorizes Attorney to File Lawsuit Against Toll Road Proposals THE LATEST: After exiting closed session on Tuesday, July 18, it was reported by City Attorney Scott Smith that City Council authorized him and his law firm to file a lawsuit against the toll road proposals from the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA).

The specifications of any potential litigation were not disclosed during the meeting, as the toll road proposals are still being considered by the TCA. The TCA has proposed several options for toll roads through, around or near San Clemente.

Members of the Coalition to Save San Clemente, an organization opposing the toll roads in San Clemente, said they’re convinced the TCA will select option 14,

In the near future, the city of San Clemente may establish a toll roads subcommittee to address any issues that come forth regarding the infrastructure. Additionally, the Council is seeking to invite members of the Orange County Transportation Authority to meet with them to discuss any impending toll roads. —EH

i-5 Freedom Network Director Hones in on Massage Businesses THE LATEST: The anti-human-trafficking organization i-5 Freedom Network will host a meeting to further its outreach in educating people about crimes related to human trafficking.

During the Tuesday night City Council meeting, the i-5 executive director Brenda Wells spoke to City Council regarding what she said she’s found to be illicit activity within the city. Wells asserted her point based on listings on RubMaps.com, a site in which people looking for taboo massages.

Wells provided the Council with example ordinances from the city of Garden Grove and other municipalities that would increase the visibility of massage businesses in order to see which ones are operating under false pretenses.

Wells is a member of the Human Affairs committee, and the City Council said it may be beneficial for that committee to iron out the details of an ordinance for consideration.

San Clemente has about 10 massage businesses.

WHAT’S NEXT: City Council members said they would consider adding more language and enforcement to its alreadyestablished ordinance regarding massage establishments. San Clemente Resident to Ride for a Cure in the 2017 Pan-Mass Challenge On Aug. 5 and 6, Arthur Dunn of San Clemente will cycle up to 192 miles in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) with the goal of raising $48 million for critical research and cancer care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

During PMC weekend, more than 6,200 cyclists from more than 40 states and eight countries will return to Massachusetts to participate in the PMC, choosing from 12 routes of varying mileage that run through 46 towns. Cyclists are anywhere between 15 and 84 years old and range from seasoned triathletes to weekend warriors who trained for this event alone and everything in between.

Since 1980, the PMC has raised $547 million dollars for Dana-Farber through the Jimmy Fund, its fundraising arm. In fact, the PMC is Dana-Farber’s largest single contributor, raising more than 52 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue.

CUSD to Offer Free and Reduced-Cost Lunches to Students According to a press release from Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD), schools are serving lunches to students every school day under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Effective July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018, children are eligible for free or reduced-price meals if the household income is less than or equal to the federal guidelines. “Any household member receiving benefits from CalFresh, CalWORKs or FDPIR should receive a notification letter stating all children within the household will automatically qualify for free meals,” the release stated. “Children who meet the definition of foster, homeless, migrant or runaway and children enrolled in their school’s Head Start program are eligible for free meals. Therefore, the household does not need to complete a meal application. Contact school officials if any child within the household is not on the notification letter. The household must inform school officials if they do not want to receive free or reduced-price meals.”

U.S. Border Patrol Agents Seize Narcotic ‘Trifecta’ South of San Clemente A vehicle stop by U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents on Wednesday, July 12, led to the arrest of a 45-year-old man and the seizure of narcotics valued at more than half a million dollars, according to a press release from USBP. At about 1 p.m., agents conducted a vehicle stop on the driver of a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox near Basilone Road on Interstate 5. As agents interviewed the driver, a Border Patrol K-9 was alerted to the man’s SUV. Agents searched and discovered 41 bundles of assorted narcotics hidden inside the vehicle door panels.

“An inventory of the bundles revealed 28.66 pounds of heroin, 4.96 pounds of cocaine, and 24.91 pounds of methamphetamine. The total estimated street value was $560,334,” the release stated. “The man and the narcotics were turned over to a task force headed by the Drug Enforcement Administration. The vehicle was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol.”

Since Oct. 1, 2016, Border Patrol agents in San Diego Sector have intercepted 228.57 pounds of heroin, 2,227.93 pounds of cocaine, and 2,935.15 pounds of methamphetamine.

Toll Road Issue Gaining More Attention

Rep. Issa states in letter toll roads would harm South Orange County

ep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, sent a letter to Mike Kraman, the CEO of the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), on Friday, July 7, that stated his opposition to any toll road construction in the area.

“While recent proposals may be wellintentioned to help ease traffic congestion on a notoriously packed section of I-5, the routes proposed today would effectively divide several of our cherished local communities while threatening to create additional traffic congestion on key thoroughfares,” Issa stated in his letter. “If allowed to move forward, the proposed routes risk destroying the very character of the communities that have drawn so many of us to call this area our home.”

Issa has said at public forums in the past that the toll roads are a state or local issue, and that his focus is primarily with federal issues. A growing contingency of locals have reached out to Issa to use whatever power he has to stop any toll road from being built near or through San Clemente.

“After hearing numerous concerns from city officials and residents who would be impacted if a toll road extension was routed through their community, I cannot support any of these proposals and respectfully request that TCA return to the drawing board and find more desirable solutions to reduce traffic congestion in South Orange County,” Issa stated in his letter.

Since last year, the TCA has hosted public forums and outreach to better understand what people who live in the area would like to see in order to alleviate traffic congestion along Interstate 5, which typically becomes stagnant on weekends and rush hour.

From these forums, the TCA constructed 18 proposals, some of which would go straight through San Clemente or near possibly environmentally sensitive areas.

The agencies have contracted with Psomas, an environmental scoping firm based in Santa Ana, to start the process of environmental review, required by the California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Protection Act. At its last forum on June 5, TCA officials San Clemente Times July 20-26, 2017

said they hope to have a record of decision on the project by 2022.

Ed Sachs, chairman of the Foothill/ Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency and mayor pro tem of Mission Viejo, sent a letter in response to Issa on July 12.

In the letter, Sachs cited Orange County Transportation Authority’s traffic projections will “face a significant increase in traffic unless something is done” to provide such relief.

Rancho Mission Viejo, which is slated to build 14,000 new homes, will also be a factor when tens of thousands of vehicles could pour onto the highways, Sachs said.

Also, Sachs said due to San Clemente’s hospital closing, the residents of the southernmost part of the county will need ample access to its nearest hospital, which, depending on where they live, would be Mission Hospitals in Laguna Beach or Mission Viejo.

“Working with our regional transportation partners, we have embarked on a multi-year outreach effort to obtain ideas from the public for traffic relief solutions,” Sachs wrote. “Some of these ideas may have merit and some may not. Over the next few years, these ideas will be analyzed using not only metrics and data for traffic relief and environmental impacts, but also technically evaluated for impacts and benefits to neighborhoods, schools and parks with each alternative that is studied.”

Sachs also said it was “unfortunate that some have chosen to spread misinformation about the public’s ideas” regarding the toll road proposals.

“These roads do not divide nor do they destroy the character of our communities, but rather, they serve as conduits that literally connect us,” Sachs said. “In fact, I respectfully believe traffic, not roads, truly divide out communities.”

During Ocean Festival last weekend, members of the Coalition to Save San Clemente, which has raised funds in order to oppose any roads but instead look for alternative solutions, manned a booth at the top of the bluff near Parque del Mar. In Praise of the Elite Why have our most exceptional people become hated?

W

hat has caused the contempt some Americans have for this country’s institutions? Even though a new survey from the Annenberg Public Policy Center found that two-thirds of our citizens cannot name the three branches of government, some view our political system with suspicion, along with our courts, colleges and news reporters.

Most noticeable is the disrespect and outright hostility to whom have been termed “elites.” Media elites, intellectual elites and political elites are now fodder to be spat upon. But at the very least, some Americans feel their own opinion is equal to or better than those “elites” in the media, universities or legislatures.

The position seems to be: Why should I believe those people? Their facts and my opinion don’t match, therefore my position is equal to theirs.

It’s an interesting perspective. How is elite defined, I wondered? I looked it up.

The definition reads: “a select part of a group that is superior to the rest in terms of ability, knowledge or qualities. Example: ‘the elite of America’s armed forces.’”

I immediately thought of an elitist I hold in high regard, Army Sgt. Kirk Foster. Foster was with the 75th Ranger Regiment in Iraq in October 2005. During that tour, he earned two Silver Stars.

Speaking of coolness under fire, I was reminded of another elitist, Tom Brady. I don’t need to recite the record of history’s best quarterback.

I guess my question is if you were discussing football with Tom Brady, would you think your opinion was just as good WAVELENGTHS as his? If you were debatBy Jim Kempton ing military tactics, would you disdain the opinion of Sgt. Foster—or would you accept his knowledge and experience as superior to yours? Do you ignore your tax consultants’ advice? What about your doctor’s recommendations? Why not?

Because they know more than you do, and they are really good at what they do. Elites are elite for a reason. Remember American exceptionalism?

So, if you accept that there are those among us who are better in terms of ability, knowledge or qualities, why are Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists, groundbreaking scientists or landmark legislators any different?

Think of literary giant Alexander Solzhenitsyn, scientist Dian Fossey, fighter pilot turned Senator John McCain, or journalist Kathy Gannon. They spoke hard truths in a free media. All risked their lives, were imprisoned, tortured or even murdered while spending a lifetime serving the better angels of mankind. Do you really think you know more about gulags, guerrillas, warfare or warlords than they did?

I wholeheartedly believe in questioning authority, having a skeptical mind and proving a case with strong evidence. But to pretend that fistfuls of facts don’t count, decades of diligence and clearheaded capabilities have no value; that elite masters at the top of their game should be ignored—that’s a very disquieting place for this great nation whose achievements in every category of our civic life have been earned by exceptional, courageous elite. And perhaps “elitist” is the slur slung at knowledge, experience and talent by those fearful of life’s facts.

Jim Kempton is a writer, surfer and chef who has never been quite good enough to warrant the title elitist. He believes the difference between an elite and a snob is that snobs pretend they can listen to the William Tell Overture and not think of The Lone Ranger.

If San Clemente’s new barrier on Pacific Coast Highway (North El Camino Real) heading into town was designed to save cyclists and runners, the city failed.

Two, 6-inch curbs with an occasional rock and plants will never stop a vehicle from entering that area. All we had to do was copy Dana Point. They have real barriers, and they are moveable if needed.

On a positive note, the surface on the new roadwork is really smooth.

All animals are given loving care until they are adopted, no matter how long it takes. Recently, “Anvil,” a long-time resident of the shelter who was adored by the volunteers, went home. For us, it was sad to see him go. He is missed, but it is wonderful that at last he has a loving forever home.

Working Together: the Police and the Public

E

very morning when officers walk out of the San Clemente substation, they see a sprawling city of 65,000 residents against the beautiful backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. As law enforcement assignments go, San Clemente and its supportive residents are the jewel of Orange County. Deputies work diligently to answer every call for service in a timely fashion. However, in a city run as efficiently as ours, we still need help. A quote from the late 1800s from Sir Robert Peel, the father of many communiBy Lt. The ranks of your protectors are few, so I thought I would reach out with proactive measures you can do that would help us protect and serve you in the manner you deserve.

The month of June saw a spike in vehicle burglaries. Out of 90 crimes committed, 32 were vehicle thefts. However, 16 of those 32 were out of unlocked cars.

So, out of the 90 crimes, you could have helped us eliminate 17 percent by locking your vehicles.

I’d also like to talk about social media.

What an incredible platform for information. We have grand plans for our Facebook page, which is administered by a few of your deputies (which is why it’s humorous at times). A couple thoughts for those of you posting to many of the San Clemente-driven accounts. Please call 911 in case of an emergency before you make a post regarding the incident. Time is critical, and we want to get there as quickly as possible. Furthermore, never assume someone else has called. The more information we have, especially contact information for someone at the scene, the

better we can perform our job.

Finally, I want to touch on traffic observations I’ve made since arriving back into the city as your Chief of Police Services.

I am lucky to drive a normal vehicle that can’t be recognized as a police vehicle easily. At times, I might have pulled up next to some of you and politely warned you about some traffic infraction you might be committing. Many of our streets were designed when people still drove horse-drawn buggies. Combine the tight configuration with parked cars and you have an interesting driving experience.

Add the occasional individual stepping out into traffic, children at play or an animal and you can see why we post traffic regulations, a few recommendations to make us all safer. Being hands-free on the cellphone literally means hands-free—not holding it away from your face with the speaker on. Following the driver in front of you six inches from their bumper will not get you there any faster. Stay within the posted speed limits. The two or three minutes you arrive early is not worth the risk you put to everyone else. We live in a beach city, so have patience with your fellow San Clementeans. Take a deep breath and relax.

I would love to write more often, especially for our readers who don’t partake in social media and computers. At the Movies: An Artsy Ghost Story

C

asey Affleck and Rooney Mara appear to be at the top of the arthouse cinema scene these days. Affleck won an Oscar for Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea this past year, and Mara is working with nearly every respected director who comes her way. The two have reunited with filmmaker David Lowery for their second film together since Ain’t Them Bodies Saints (2013). A Ghost Story is not a horror film or Casper-like sentimentality, but rather a nice bit of celluloid eye candy.

Affleck plays a local musician, who is credited as just “C,” and lives in a small suburban house in Texas with his wife, played by Mara, who is credited as “M.” The two have a pretty typical, but content married life in the quiet neighborhood, until C is killed in a car crash right outside the house. From then on, C re-appears as a ghost—but a ghost that is a white bedsheet with two peepholes—following M around the house, unknown to human eyes.

While I had reservations on Lowery’s earlier film taking too many cues and inspirations from Terrence Malick, here the newer director really finds a fresh light. In many ways, A Ghost Story is Lowery’s own The Tree of Life (2011), but with his own flare and touch coming through fluidly. The whole film can be viewed as almost an extended dream sequence, like Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky (2001), but without any expository dialogue or backstory. For a mellow atmosphere and pretty aesthetics, A Ghost Story is for artsy film fans. SC

Celebrating Parents’ Day: Surveys Question Happiness

he Fourth of July’s festive fireworks aren’t illuminating the sky, and the smoldering smell of sulfur isn’t lingering in the air but that doesn’t mean the summer party is over. Don’t ditch the decorations just yet, July has another holiday to host—it’s a lesser-known celebration, one honoring parents instead of patriots.

By Shelley Murphy tion establishing the fourth Sunday of July as Parents’ Day. The purpose of the holiday is “recognizing, uplifting and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children.”

I thought we would commemorate this holiday while brunching with mom in May and barbecuing with dad in June, but the calendar disagrees.

Not in the mood to celebrate? Well, you’re not alone—especially if you are a parent. Before breaking out the party hats, consider the findings of this recent parenting report.

The study was published in November 2016 in the American Journal of Sociology, and it asks the question: Who is happier, parents or their childless peers?

A team of researchers including Jennifer Glass, a professor of sociology at the University of Texas, asked parents and nonparents in 22 European and Englishspeaking countries to rate their happiness.

The data collected found that American parents are 12 percent less happy than their kid-free counterparts. This “happiness gap” represents the largest gap among the 22 countries surveyed.

ence or absence of social policies allowing parents to better combine paid work with family obligations.”

Specifically, Glass reported two factors most affected parents’ happiness ratings: the average cost of childcare for a 2-year-old as a percentage of income and the number of paid vacation and sick days mandated by law.

Countries with family-friendly social policies in place to support working mothers and fathers saw their parents rank themselves as happier than their nonparent peers.

Glass concluded that the cause of unhappiness for American parents is less about their children and more about the lack of childcare support and flexible work schedules.

The study also noted that childrearing in the United States is comparatively more expensive and competitive, adding to parents’ stress and anxiety.

A 2014 study by Child Care Aware of America estimated that in the U.S. the annual average cost of full-time infant child care equals or surpasses the average price of in-state public college tuition throughout much of the country.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated that a middle-income family

spent approximately $234,900 to raise a child born in 2011 to age 17. The figure did not include higher education; if the kid enrolled in college, the approximate number could approach $500,000.

But not all parenting projections are gloom and doom, according to Emma Seppala, author of The Happiness Track. In her book published earlier this year she writes that research proves parenthood can increase a parent’s health and happiness in several ways.

She said becoming a parent provides a sense of purpose, and living life with a sense of meaning boosts longevity and cardiovascular health. According to Seppala, the bonding between a parent and child also releases hormones associated with an overall well-being.

Despite numerous confounding psychological, sociological and biological studies and surveys, researchers agree on one point: parenting is hard work.

Being a parent is overwhelming at times, and those new to the job sometimes

wonder when it gets easier and where they’ll find the finish line.

I’ve found the challenges of parenthood change, but parenting doesn’t necessarily get easier. Although, I can attest that it’s far easier to bandage a skinned knee than a broken heart.

My boys may be grown and flown, but the parenting finish line didn’t appear when they changed addresses. I’ve heard it said that the goal of parenting is to work yourself out of the job; but I disagree—I still love my job and the people I work with.

LA Residency to be featured at House of Trestles July 28-30

treet artists from Los Angeles will display their work in San Clemente at the House of Trestles from Friday, July 28, to Sunday, July 30.

The Street Artist in Residence program, based at the House of Trestles, located at 27175 S. El Camino Real is hosting the program LA Residency and will feature artists from Los Angeles. The free event will display artwork for attendees each night from 6 to 10 p.m.

San Clemente-based street artist known as Bandit has been working with the program and is now a board member. All of the work that goes into the program is volunteer-based with a board of directors, led by Josh Host.

“We have all these artists down here, but we haven’t developed a base for the arts community,” Host said. “We’re able to bring in international artists as well as local artists, and we’re able to transform

these spaces into galleries.”

Bandit has been painting in Los Angeles for about six years and networked with other street artists throughout that time.

More than 20 artists based in Los Angeles are participating in the residency program. Many street artists conceal their identity for artistic allure and mystique as well as other reasons.

“Being able to bring down some of the top street artists in LA to San Clemente is pretty remarkable,” Host said. “Bandit had to cash in a lot of relationship chips to get folks to come down here.”

Prior to the event, some of the street artists collaborated on a mural that spans throughout the interior of House of Trestles. Some of the works fused gritty, visceral images that stoke political conversations with abstract color.

The Street Artist in Residence program started about a year ago when Host opened the House of Trestles, which is like a hostel for artists looking to promote their work. Artists have come from as far as across the globe to participate in month-long displays. This particular exhibit will run one weekend only.

Host said the program has welcomed artists from Norway, Portugal, Romania and other countries.

“The magic of this is to transform communities into something that’s dream like, where children can grow up and see that art is ubiquitous,” Host said.

No theme has been set for the program, as the directors didn’t want to put the artists’ creativity “on a leash,” Bandit said.

Host said the program has worked with commercial buildings, such as the Triton mural facing north on South El Camino Real, in order to increase the city’s exposure to art but not impeding on public spaces.

The city of San Clemente is currently mulling a mural ordinance that, at its latest consideration, would give the Planning Commission authority to consider the standards of reviewing applications for murals.

The LAB: Local Training Facility Builds Community Amongst Its Athletes

ational Letters of Intent, AllAmerican helmets, and college and professional jerseys cover nearly every inch of the lobby walls of an athletic training facility home to some of San Clemente’s most decorated athletes.

Since 2003, San Clemente residents John Bradley and Chris Lippincott’s Learned Athletic Behavior, better known as “The LAB”, has served as the common denominator in the training programs of the town’s most elite athletes.

The LAB has conditioned thousands of local athletes coming from a variety of athletic backgrounds, ranging from novice to pro, including Los Angeles Rams tight end Travis Wilson, Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Kyle Murphy and USC quarterback Sam Darnold.

What keeps these elite athletes coming back to the warehouse facility in Talega, many said, is The LAB’s guiding philosophy, which centers around producing wellrounded athletes.

Bradley and Lippincott said this is accomplished through a diversity of exercises that focus on speed, agility, strength, balance and flexibility, in addition to incorporating dynamic stretching and core work.

Both Bradley and Lippincott said they put an emphasis on educating their athletes on how each of the exercises relate to their bodies and respective sports.

“I’ve been training with John since I was in sixth grade and he has helped me become the best overall athlete I can be,” Darnold said.

Many of The LAB’s athletes, like Murphy, come back home to train every offseason.

“When it came to different conditioning camps and tests, I felt I was well prepared from both a physical and mental standpoint because of my years of training with John,” Murphy said.

Even though they use a unique training style, one of the overriding qualities of The LAB has been its ability to create a sense of family and community amongst its athletes.

Whether it’s checking in with them to see how they are doing after a workout, or shooting them a motivational text, The LAB’s athletes expressed that Bradley has always been there for them.

“John was more than just a trainer. He truly cared about each individual athlete and their unique skill set,” Erin Yoder said, a San Clemente native who played women’s volleyball at USC. San Clemente Times July 20-26, 2017

“For years, I’ve trusted John as a trainer, and he’s trusted me to put in the work, treating me like one of his sons. To be able to have that trust in him is really cool,” Darnold added.

Bradley and The LAB have also been a long-time fixture on the sidelines of San Clemente High School athletic programs, having worked with the Tritons’ girls soccer and boys lacrosse teams.

A handful of players on the 2016 CIF and State Championship football team currently train at The LAB, including incoming senior and All-CIF first team running back Austin Whitsett, who is inspired every time he strolls through The LAB’s doors.

“When you walk into the LAB and see all those jerseys on the wall, you remember all those big names that came before you,” Whitsett said.

SCHS head football coach Jamie Ortiz said Bradley has been a tremendous advocate of the program, as a well as a stable voice with its players.

“I’m a firm believer of when it comes to building an elite athlete it takes a village, and John has played a big role in helping develop the athleticism component in a lot of our players looking to take it to the next level,” Ortiz said.

The LAB has helped approximately 200 athletes, a majority coming from San Clemente, accomplish their dreams of playing collegiate athletics.

“They’re all basically like our kids,” said Bradley, a father of three.

The LAB’s first location was in a small, office-sized space in Dana Point in 2003.

One of the main catalysts behind its growth in recent years can be traced back to former SCHS quarterback Duke DeLancellotti.

DeLancellotti, who currently plays professional football in Denmark, said his first workouts at The LAB instantly paid off on the field. His improved balance, flexibility and explosiveness led to better footwork, and complimented his football workouts. His performance, he said, changed for the better.

DeLancellotti told other SCHS football players about his new training spot, and his teammates followed him there. The LAB quickly became known for promoting a competitive, team-based environment. The initial group of football players included a number of former SCHS standouts that would go on to play college football, including Kevin Murphy (Harvard) and Will Tober (USC).

As its client base grew, The LAB moved to its current home in a spacious facility in the Talega neighborhood in October 2016 – over a decade after starting in a space about one-quarter of its size.

Like its infrastructure, the LAB’s athletes have also continued to grow, though its

support for its athletes has always remained constant.

“I flip out when I’m watching games … all the stress, anxiety and excitement of watching your kids living their dreams on some of the greatest stages … it’s an awesome feeling,” Bradley said. SC

here is never a shortage of things to do and areas to explore in Southern Orange County, especially during the summer time. This week, we are highlighting a free outdoor offering by the California State Parks in San Clemente.

This summer, California State Parks is offering an exciting addition to its educational programming.

Cryssie Moreno, and interpreter for San Onofre State Beach, explains how this culturally rich 45 to 60-minute guided tour in south San Clemente assures a greater understanding of the dynamic space that is the San Onofre Parks coastal wilderness zone.

“This area has unique geographical features and rich cultural history. Some of my favorite parts of the hike include learning about native flora and viewing

one of the last untouched watersheds left in Southern California,” Moreno said.

The hiking trail, while made of dirt, is an easy walk and widely accessible to most, Moreno said. Participants are asked to wear close-toed shoes, hats and sunscreen. All ages are welcome and day-use parking fees apply.

Dude’s First Final National amateur champ and San Clemente local Cole Houshmand makes first WSL final

Q

uick tip of the cap this week to San Clemente’s Cole Houshmand, who continues to have the summer of his young life. Down in Mexico, battling it out for WSL Qualifying Series, the 16-yearold rising star made his first pro final.

A regular in the amateur and pro junior events, after winning the national title this year at the USA Surfing Championships, he’s broadened his horizons. Blitzing his way through the Powerade Surf Open in Acapulco, he finished runner up to Costa Rica’s Carlos Munoz.

“I’m still pretty much in shock,” said Houshmand after the awards ceremony.

“Even though I didn’t win, it still feels amazing and it’s a huge experience for me. My goal all along was to make a QS Final, and even though it’s only a QS 1,000, I couldn’t be more stoked.”

Surfrider Steps Up Toll Road Rhetoric Fifteen years and five lawsuits later, it’s time to start writing letters again

T

hreat of development of the 241 toll road has once again forced the Surfrider Foundation and the Save San Onofre Coalition to take action. Reacting to the support that Rep. Darrell Issa has recently given to the contentious highway project, last week, Surfrider initiated a letterwriting campaign in the hopes of educating the elected representative on why exactly San Onofre and Trestles are so essential to the health and well-being of this area.

“Clearly, Mr. Issa forgot about the thousands of people who fought for years to protect this Park and that the Bush Administration and (California) Coastal Commission denied the road in 2008,” reads a clarion statement released by the Surfrider Foundation. “Building a road through State Park is an outdated way of solving traffic.”

The toll road project continues to face staunch opposition. Environmental groups have been spearheading a fight against the six-lane 241 toll road for over 15 years, but even though they’ve come out on top in five

lawsuits and numerous public hearings, the Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA) remains persistent in their desire to pave over our little slice of paradise. In November 2016, a settlement of a lawsuit established an “Avoidance Area” that would permanently protect the San Onofre State Beach and Trestles area. Issa seeks to undo this.

“I am disappointed that some communities and elected officials have chosen to either remain on the sidelines or literally throw roadblocks in the way of transportation alternatives, but I hope you understand that the majority of South Orange County residents want and need traffic relief solutions and that we strongly support the unrelenting efforts of TCA and its transportation agency partners,” reads an excerpt from a letter Issa released earlier this month.

Over 2.5 million people use the San Onofre State Park annually, providing innumerable environmental, economic and recreational benefits to the area.

In the Club California surf clubs are back and they’re coming to Salt Creek

B

ack in the old days, when boards were heavy and surfers still greased their hair, the surf club scene reigned supreme up and down the California coast. Down in La Jolla, Windansea was the undisputed king of cool. Their team could out surf, out party, and pretty much out brawl anyone. Their club jackets—partially made famous by Mike Hynson in The

Endless Summer—were the envy of anyone with a pair of Birdwells. As the Shortboard Revolution fired its first shots at the end of the ’60s, the club scene died out as the “soul” trip took over.

Well, the club scene just came roaring back. Last October, the West Coast Boardriders, a consortium of surf clubs from Orange County, held their first event featuring Huntington Beach versus Seal Beach. The contest was wildly successful in the local communities, so last February they held another contest with Newport, Huntington and Seal Beach facing off. There were nearly 100 competitors in divisions ranging from 14 and Under to 50 and Over.

This Friday marks the third and largest club contest to date. Hosted by the newly formed Dana Point Surf Club, there will be six teams squaring off for the WCBR Championship Cup: Dana Point, San Clemente, Laguna Beach, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and defending champs Newport Beach.

“We are really excited to host the first event at Salt Creek and welcome all the other coastal cities,” said Dana Point Surf Club co-founder Eric Diamond. “Mainly, I would love to see the beach communities come together—young and old, guys and gals, moms, dads, kids—and share some great times on our beautiful coast.”

Diamond’s father was a member of the famous Windansea club.

“The club is like a living museum of beach culture and a wealth of surf history,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for the youngsters—like one of our young team captains, 2017 national champion Danny Kenduck— to learn about this place from the pioneering pro surfers like Mike Cruickshank, and so on. To be able to gather our tribe in such a fun atmosphere is an honor.”

tanding out at Lowers isn’t easy, but Nico Coli’s been doing an admirable job as of late. A Shorecliff’s Middle School graduate, the young goofy-footer has been logging ample water time this summer and preparing for all the big things coming up down the line.

“Summer has been going great, I have been surfing Lowers a lot, Rivi and Lost Winds or anywhere that looks fun, usually with my friends Liam Murray, Kade Matson and Crosby Colapinto,” Coli said.

Given that he’s running with some of the most talented groms in San Clemente, Nico’s keeping pace. Logging some solid results on the NSSA circuit this last season and a third-place finish at the Rip Curl North American GromSearch National Championships, he’s also been selected to be a part of the USA Surfing Junior National development program.

“I am honored to have been chosen to be a member of the USA Jr. Surf Team, and now that surfing is an Olympic sport, it’s even more of a responsibility to represent USA Surfing,” Nico said. “We’ve been training almost every Thursday at Oceanside Harbor with USA surf coach Joey Buran and with team members like Taj Lindblad, Nick Marshall, Kade Matson, Levi Slawson, Kirra Pinkerton and a few more rippers.”

In addition to his involvement with the U.S. National team, Nico dreams of someday joining the elite ranks of the WSL Championship Tour. Looking up to some of San Clemente’s most established surfers, including the Gudauskas brothers, Kolohe Andino, Ian Crane and Chris Ward, in the immediate future he’s hoping to try his hand in a few Pro Junior events before setting off on the WSL’s Qualifying Series.

“Then hopefully win a world title,” he added about his long-term aspirations.

Hardly a one-trick pony, out of the water Nico’s a shutterbug.

“Outside of surfing, I’d like to be a camera collector,” he said. “I like using oldschool cameras. It’s just this little hobby that I have for when I travel to take pictures with weird cameras and films.” SC
