What’s Up With...

Five things San Clemente should know this week Portion of Pier Planks to be Replaced THE LATEST: The city of San Clemente will begin replacing some of the planks at the Pier, but people will still be able to frequent the popular location.

People will be able to cross over a temporary bridge.

The only planks being replaced are from the start of the Pier to a few feet past The Fisherman’s Restaurant & Bar. The planks will be replaced with wood that will span across the width of the Pier instead of two planks joined together.

The current planks have worn down and bowed in the middle, causing a tripping hazard.

“We are going to start the contract and I gave notice to proceed was for Monday (March 21) and it’s going to be done by May 1,” said Amir Ilkhanipour, the city’s senior civil engineer.

The cost of the project is $149,874. The planks are expected to last 10 to 25 years.

WHAT’S NEXT: Ilkhanipour said there are plans to replace all the planks of the Pier, but that project has not yet been set in motion. The city has spent $425,000 every year for maintenance of the Pier for the last 16 years.

Community Engagement Panel to Discuss Environmental Aspects of Decommission THE LATEST: The San Onofre Community Engagement Panel, an 18-member panel that meets to discuss the decommissioning and ongoing operations of the offline San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, will be presented with information about state approvals and environmental review of the nuclear plant’s decommissioning on Thursday, March 24 at the panel’s quarterly meeting in Oceanside.

Officials with Southern California Edison will provide an overview of the upcoming permitting process for decommissioning.

A representative from the California State Lands Commission, which is the lead state agency overseeing the environmental review of the decommission process, will San Clemente Times March 24-30, 2016

preview the California Environmental Quality Act requirements and process.

The commission is seeking the advice of an environmental consultant to help prepare an environmental impact report, required by CEQA, and will host a public scoping meeting on that report as part of the public involvement process.

During the meeting, Tom Palmisano, vice president of decommissioning, is expected to provide an update on decommissioning preparations and storage of used nuclear fuel.

“In addition, several Community Engagement Panel members plan to discuss their efforts to broaden support to move San Onofre’s used nuclear fuel off-site, an initiative known as Consolidated Interim Storage,” the release stated.

There will be a public comment period and the meeting will be live-streamed via www.songscommunity.com.

WHAT’S NEXT: The CEP meeting is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 24 at the QLN Center, 1938 Avenida Del Oro, in Oceanside. Staffed information booths will be open from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

I-5 South, Pico Bridge Update THE LATEST: Work is continuing on the new I-5 bridge over Avenida Pico.

“Pile driving for the bridge foundation on the west side of the interchange is done, and crews are building the bridge abutments and pilasters, which will support the bridge deck,” said Eric Carpenter, OCTA spokesperson. “Work also is beginning on large retaining walls adjacent to the southbound Pico off-ramp and on-ramp.”

Officials said steel and wood falsework will cause several full nighttime closures of Avenida Pico, which is scheduled for early to mid-April. OCTA officials said they will confirm dates when the project is closure to starting.

The new retaining wall along westbound Avenida Pico, just before the on-ramp to northbound I-5.

Additional I-5 South projects include continuing to realign ramps at the Avenida Vista Hermosa and Camino de Estrella interchanges.

“In the coming months, motorists can expect nine-day full closures of the southbound loop on-ramp at Avenida Vista Hermosa and the northbound loop on-ramp at Camino de Estrella,” Carpenter said. “Some of the other ramps at the interchanges will see weekend closures to accommodate work being done there.”

Motorists soon will see crews performing paving activities along the northbound side of the freeway where it’s being widened. The southbound side will follow.

begin on the sound walls along southbound I-5.

Further north, at PCH/Camino Las Ramblas, work continues on a retaining wall under the Via California overcrossing. Once that wall and related work is completed, crews will shift to the median to begin work there.

WHAT’S NEXT: Likely to begin in November, the work on the bridge is planned to shift to the east side of the interchange.

“Traffic will be shifted onto the new bridge and the remainder of the old bridge will be demolished and rebuilt,” Carpenter said.

Planning Commission to Revisit Short-Term Living Rentals THE LATEST: The city of San Clemente Planning Commission opted to give more time to explore the details of its shortterm living units zoning amendments to recommend to City Council, an amendment that has caught the attention of many STLU owners.

Commissioners listened to the testimony of about a dozen people on March 16 during the regular meeting. The discussion has focused on where STLUs would be allowed to operate. The City Council has already passed operational amendments to the city code requiring owners to apply for permits as well as penalties for infractions and giving power to the home owners associations to decide if one can operate in its jurisdiction.

Middle School Raises $2,355 in Pennies for Patients THE LATEST: Bernice Ayer Middle School’s Peer Assistance Leadership class just wrapped up a Pennies for Patients fundraiser to help find and fund a cure for leukemia and lymphoma and other cancers of the blood. A contest was held between all fourth period classes, and $2,355.16 was raised in two weeks. The top five earning classes were Mrs. Cummings PAL class at $470, Mrs. White’s science class with $260.05, Mrs. Gibson’s social studies class with $220.87 and Mrs. Welter’s ASB class at $213.87.

“All of the teachers really got involved this year and Mrs. White’s science class even did research and made posters educating students about Leukemia and Lymphoma’s effects on the body,” said teacher Toni Cummings. “This is the most we have ever raised.”

Dance Fever San Clemente High School Dance Team qualifies for nationals for 12th consecutive year

M

oments before performing in front of a national stage, the anticipation rises for the San Clemente High School Dance Team.

No one can see the thousands of people in the stands while waiting for the curtain to open, and then they hear it.

“San Clemente, welcome to the floor.”

The curtains open and year’s work comes together on the biggest stage.

That was the scene last weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center for the United Spirit Association’s 2016 high school national championships.

Since 2004, the San Clemente High School Dance Team has established itself as one of the premier high school programs in the nation.

The team has qualified for the national competition every year for the past 12 years, racking up several titles in different divisions.

Danielle Luna Braithwaite, the head coach of the dance team, earned four national titles in her time at SCHS. “Nationals went great. We had two dances that qualified for the final round,” Braithwaite said. “For each division they take the top 25 percent to re-compete in the finals, known as the night show, and we placed third in both of those.”

At the state competition a few weeks ago, the dance team took first place in “medium dance,” based on group size of 10 to 12 dancers.

“Our success is based on hard work, positivity and teamwork,” senior captain Chloe Moodie said. “If we’re all bonded, then we’re going to have a successful year

because it’s all about teamwork and being cohesive.”

The team members said they rehearse about 15 to 20 hours a week.

Braithwaite said the strategy of the dance team is to study their competition and to find a dance the team thinks will score the most points with the judges.

“This year we really focused on our large pieces because basically most of the girls were in those and we thought those had the best chances of competing in the night show, large lyrical and large dance,” Braithwaite said, adding those are the dances that earned the team third place at nationals.

Most of the members of the team said they have been in some kind of dance class since they were 2 or 3 years old.

“With new girls every year, it’s kind of a guessing game to see how cohesive we’re going to be, and by the end of the year we end up being a pretty awesome team,” said junior Jayden Watt, a junior varsity team captain.

Competition at this level is fierce.

“Sometimes our competition is really hard, so if we don’t win it’s a bit discouraging because of all the hard work we put into it,” varsity captain senior Rachel Hughes said. “But when we do win, it’s like the greatest feeling ever.”

Hughes said she plans to dance in college and hopes to become a professional dancer either by performing or teaching.

“My favorite thing about dancing, especially on this team, is finding connec-

tions and making it more about the team,” Hughes said.

Braithwaite said the dance team also does community performances. She said all six of last year’s seniors who graduated came back to support this year’s team.

“There’s a lot of sacrifice in being on this team, but it also comes with a lot of rewards such as going to these competitions and the sisterhood these girls build between one another,” Braithwaite said.

“The captains especially take on a lot of responsibility in getting schedules ready, registering for competitions and all that.

I would say a lot of them walk out of this feeling like they’ve learned something more than just dance.”

Moodie said she had experienced just that.

“I didn’t expect to grow as much as a person from being on this team,” Moodie said. “I’m really becoming responsible.”

Sophomore Idalis Ledezma said even though she didn’t have any leadership roles last year, she learned how to help take her team to a higher level in her first year as a junior varsity captain.

“It’s a lot of what the captains do that motivates the girls on this team,” Ledezma said.

During tryouts, the team’s reputation precedes itself. “(Tryouts are) honestly really intimidating,” Ledezma said. “You have to compete … and you really don’t know what to expect, but you just pour your heart out and during those times I really grew as a dancer because I was basically pushing myself to the limits.” SC

Panhe celebration turns 10 under San Onofre Parks Foundation

A

gathering of Native American culture takes place every year at the San Mateo Campground where native tribes once flourished.

On Sunday, March 20, the San Onofre Parks Foundation celebrated its 10th year of hosting and organizing the event.

The site of Panhe at the San Mateo Campground used to be a village of Acjachemen/Juaneño tribespeople. Members of the tribe said it is still a sacred burial ground and they have tried to protect the area from the intrusion of construction.

Steven Garcia, a member of the Tongva nation, known as “blue dolphin” people, or people of the hut, has been coming to Panhe celebrations since the beginning.

“If we can keep this area as sacred as it is, people will understand why it means so much to us,” Garcia said.

During the events, Garcia performed a spiritual “Eagle Dance,” which was passed down to him by an elder when he was a child. He said the man knew Garcia would one day perform the ritual when he was older.

The performance is an emotional one for Garcia, who has presented it in various states and countries.

“This dance represents sending our messages to the creator,” Garcia said.

“They said the bald eagle was on the endangered species list, and sometimes I think we as natives could be next. But it’s basically a healing dance for all people of all nations.”

Garcia used the feathers of an eagle that was donated to him for the dance. He used every feather from the bird for his outfit.

“The feedback from people, that’s what’s so much fun about doing the dance,” Garcia said.

The tribe came from the Los Angeles basin area and inhabited all the way to San Juan Capistrano.

Susan Goggins, the business manager of the San Onofre Parks Foundation, said the cohesive efforts of the community have helped keep the event going for the last decade.

“The commitment of the community to protect and preserve this area has really kept this event going,” Goggins said. “The event took place a few years before the San Onofre parks Foundation became involved. It was a gathering of the Native American community, and on the third year we learned more about the event.

State parks requirements changed, and we started taking care of the logistics and stepped in to help it grow.”

of the people who once lived in the Panhe village.

“We were living here when the first Spaniards came here in 1769,” Robles said.

“Through my mom, we were from this village, and to many Native Americans it’s very important to protect the place where you are. It holds your ancestral memories.”

In the 1980s, Robles said there was a kind of renaissance of Native American culture. When she was raised in the 1950s and 1960s, she said her tribe was somewhat prohibited from speaking their language, but after that people became more involved in the culture.

When the San Mateo Campground valley washed out a few decades ago, California State Parks came back to help reconstruct the burial grounds.

“We continue to have tribal meetings here and use it as a repository of our culture and who we were and who we are,” Robles said. “We started doing Panhe as an educational and fun gathering for us.”

And the National Debt Grows Ever Larger

T

raditions run deeply in America. On every Feb. 2, since 1887, the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil emerges, to great fanfare, from his home on Gobbler’s Knob to view his shadow. If it’s visible, there’ll be six more weeks of winter.

We’re in the process of developing another tradition. The U.S. national debt, which amidst a display of anguish reached $17 trillion on Oct. 25, 2013 increased to $18 trillion on Dec 2, 2014—403 days later.

Thereafter, it surged to $19 trillion on Jan. 29, 2016—423 days this time. Once again an illusion of vituperation echoed throughout the nation. You may be certain that in the not too distant future we’ll hit the $20 trillion mark, on the way to forever.

Those who bemoan the ever-increasing national debt point out that it represents more than $58,000 for each man, woman and child in America. We are regularly reminded that this obligation must ultimately be assumed by our children

and grandchildren. As to its cause, many persons place the blame on a do-nothing Congress and an unresponsive presidency.

Although some analysts recommend a permanent debt limit, others call for a debt limit suspension or full repeal of the debt ceiling statute. And while the bickering goes on, we’re constantly warned that our inability to control the debt will bring our nation to the brink of default.

Let me now offer another slant on this controversy. What’s the actual significance of the national debt? It seems to pace itself against inflaSTRAIGHT TALK tion; as the debt rises in

By Al Jacobs dollars, the dollars fall in value. And there’s a fundamental difference between personal liability and collective liability. In the absence of joint and several liability, no one person will ever be

held individually responsible. Very simply, although each citizen may theoretically be on the hook for $58,000 of the nation’s unpaid obligations, no single individual will be found legally liable to ante up any portion of the debt. It’s for this reason most persons ignore it.

FREEWAY SIGNS ARE NOT A BLIGHT I cringe in disbelief at many of the decisions our City Council passes. If you care about this city, here are three points to ponder: 1. If the scenic view for drivers going 70 mph on I-5 is so important, where was the voice of the council when they allowed the No. 1 ugliest freeway block walls to be built (and shockingly rebuilt) along both sides up and down our entire six-exit town? Santa Ana and LA have better. Why didn’t they do something beautiful, like our neighboring cities Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano?

They had the chance—ask them!

2. Where does the voice of the people whom they (supposedly) are tasked with representing enter the picture?

3. Why are freeway signs a blight?

To whom? To how many? A freeway is not a front yard. For decades signs have provided a huge service to the traveling public and economically benefitted the city.

Aren’t those two issues the City Council is obligated to address?

Are these questions being considered?

Perhaps we must wait for the next election cycle. Hopefully people won’t be too busy to pay attention because they might be working overtime to pay for their huge water bills.

GROWTH OF CITY MAKES DISTRICTS NECESSARY STEVEN SWARTZ, San Clemente

While a few of the initiators of this petition might have specific issues that prompted their concerns in regards to four out of five of our council members all living in the same general neighborhood, my support is prompted by a more general logic. Having lived in San Clemente for close to 25 years, I have seen great growth in both the city’s footprint and its population. Over the last couple of decades we have nearly doubled our size. With the growth of different neighborhoods within San Clemente comes more diversity. As I experienced during my time as chairman of the Beaches, Parks and Recreation Commission, many of the neighborhoods have their own needs for city support of services, roads, utilities and recreation.

While we are a great beach and surf town, not all residents are beach and surf people. When I first joined the Recreation Commission, the established concept was that the beach represented more than half of serving the per capita recreational resources for the city. With all the new neighborhoods being added to San Clemente, it became very apparent that more recreational facilities were needed for the diverse population. From that came Steed Park, Marblehead Park and Vista Hermosa Regional Park facilities. We have many sports in friendly open environments, welldesigned secluded neighborhoods and a variety of shopping experiences that serve our community in many diverse ways. It would seem logical for the City Council to reflect that diversity.

Over the last few years there have been a lot of majority decisions made by the City Council that have had many supporters and detractors. Simply browsing through the very many active San Clemente social sites underscores many different concerns in regards to the health and welfare of our city, its neighborhoods and citizens. I do have to admit that I was very surprised to learn that the council majority all live in the same southwest neighborhood. So, when I was approached to support the idea of placing the choice on the ballot to have districts carved out for the city council, it made sense to me.

Wouldn’t it be better to have a City Councilmember who actually experiences the same environment and services of the different sections of our city to have a voice on the council when items concerning their area are decided?

I don’t believe that the current City Council members have intentionally done anything wrong. I have, in fact, applauded and supported a number of their decisions. What I do believe is that our city is spread out with many new and newer neighborhoods, beyond the southwest and beach regions. Because of how many of the various areas’ concerns and outlooks can differ between them, having a city council that reflects and is elected by those different population concerns would appear to be the fairest approach for a truly representative governance.

We have heard many arguments from the owners of short-term vacation rentals that are operating their commercial businesses in our residential neighborhoods.

It is their opinion that they are entitled to make money in our neighborhoods despite the fact their businesses impact the neighboring residents’ quality of life and destroy the character and stability of our neighborhoods. It seems that they have even convinced a few of our city council members to explore the possibility of setting up “common sense” regulations that would allow them to continue to operate their businesses in areas zoned strictly for residential use. Our group “Protect Our Neighborhoods” strongly disagrees with this approach and believes it is in direct violation of our General Plan and Zoning Ordinance.

San Clemente is a general law city. The City updated its general plan in 2014 with the vision of preserving our village character. The General Plan is San Clemente’s Constitution. It has 13 elements. The Land Use Element is the General Plan’s most important policy document because it states the types of land uses that are allowed and where they can be located: residential, commercial, mixed-use, industrial, open space, recreation and/or public areas.

Title 17 of our Municipal Code is the Zoning Ordinance. It is the primary tool for implementing the goals, objectives and policies of our General Plan. The Zoning Ordinance states, “No use of land or buildings shall be approved for processing under this title unless it is consistent with the General Plan.” Pursuant to the General Plan and Zoning Ordinance, short-term vacation rentals are prohibited in residential areas.

“property rights” are being threatened if they are not allowed to continue operating these businesses but fail to understand that property rights are not determined simply by ownership. Property rights are determined by land use and zoning ordinances that are in place to protect all property owners and residents. People that live in areas zoned residential have the “property right” to demand that the City enforce our current Zoning Ordinance and prohibit any land use inconsistent with the policies set forth in our General Plan. Commercial businesses are permitted to operate in areas zoned for commercial use. There are no provisions in our General Plan or Zoning Ordinance that allow commercial businesses to operate in residential neighborhoods.

We believe that a person should have the “right” to go on vacation and rent or exchange their house for a month or even longer, or rent out a room in their home to help make ends meet, but we are adamantly opposed to profiteers invading our neighborhoods and operating these illegal hotels at the expense of our residents.

These commercial businesses go against the very essence of our General Plan by destroying our small town feel, where neighbors know neighbors.

Soon a vacation rental may be operating next to you. It is time to take back our neighborhoods. If you are concerned about the preservation of your neighborhood, please contact San Clemente’s City

The band, made up of musicians and singers who play multiple instruments, can emit a variety of tones and sounds ranging from folk to bluegrass, jazz, alternative and rock, just to name a few.

The band will primarily be performing tracks off their new album, “Petals”, when they take the stage at the Coach House. According to the band’s double bass, mandolin and banjo player Dango Rose, the new album will be Elephant Revival’s most ambitious yet in terms of musicianship.

The band included parts for cello, octave fiddle, and pedal steel guitar into their ar-

rangements on “Petals”, which gives the record a distinct sound.

“Compositionally, (the new album) is much more elevated … We allow the music to take us there. We follow the music and let the sound guide the way,” Rose said.

In addition to playing songs off “Petals”, Elephant Revival will be performing tracks off previous records, according to Rose.

Ice: An important tool all seniors need to remember

T

oday’s story is a reminder of the importance of the acronym “ICE” (In Case of Emergency) in the lives of seniors.

The name of the woman who provided this information and the name of the man mentioned in her account of events have been changed at her request.

Last month, Joyce, 73, met Jeffrey, 70, online. She said, “Quickly, I felt he was very special. We had interesting conversations; he was respectful. He had a cute personality and was interested in me also.

After caring for his wife as she fought cancer for many years, he was ready to find a partner and move forward.

“Jeffrey and I absolutely clicked,” she said. “We were into our third date in four days. We were walking up a steep driveway at my condo development. I was two steps ahead of him when I heard him say something. I turned to look and saw him falling backwards, straight-bodied.

“His head hit the cement with a loud crack, bounced up and back down, cracking again. He began convulsing; blood was running out of his ear and the back of his head. He was unconscious.

“I yelled for help and called 911.

I thought he was going to die at any moment. A neighbor nurse showed up in a few seconds. A doctor friend of mine was driving up the driveway. He stopped his car and jumped out. He put his hands on each side of Jeffrey’s head to stabilize it. Blood was on the doctor’s hands and running down the driveway. Within five minutes, emergency vehicles arrived.

“A fireman was asking me questions and writing down my answers. He took my contact information and wanted Jeffrey’s relatives’ contacts also. I had none, other than their names. Jeffrey was rushed to the hospital.”

Joyce and the fireman searched Jeffrey’s unlocked car for information but found none. To help Joyce find the hospital emergency room, the fireman drew a map on his arm with a pen.

Although horrified and worried sick, Joyce said she drove herself to the hospital. She was led immediately to Jeffrey’s emergency room location. She said, “There he was, propped up on a gurney, conscious, giving me his cute smile and calling me by my name. It was unbelievable; I was so happy.”

Jeffrey could not recall his sons’ contact information, but his cell phone was on the gurney. With the help of a hospital employee, Joyce was able to eventually San Clemente Times March 24-30, 2016

send a text message to Jeffrey’s oldest son who lived nearby. But much time had elapsed.

Jeffrey kept telling Joyce he wanted to go home. The doctor told her that Jeffrey had two skull fractures and bleeding on the brain. The doctor said empathetically that if Jeffrey went home, he would die.

Now, Jeffrey is in a nursing facility. He is having cognitive and ambulatory issues and is losing weight.

Joyce says, “I have not given up. He is truly a very special man. I believe everyone should carry a couple of names and phone numbers in their wallet in case they become incapacitated.

“In dating, especially later in life, each person should get an emergency phone number or two from the other. Much time was spent trying to contact Jeffrey’s family based only on the two names of his sons he had talked about.”

When I shared this story with Doug, a friend of mine, he said, “In addition to keeping emergency contacts in your wallet, add them to your cell phone as well.

Mark both of them with the word ICE. An EMT told me that once a person is stabilized, the cell phone is checked for ICE listings and the numbers are called. Fire and police agencies also do this.”

Thanks to Joyce for sharing this heart-wrenching story. She and Jeffrey are in our thoughts. Don’t forget to add the word ICE to your emergency numbers in your phone and wallet.

Before SALT, Total Body Conditioning was in the location, and Prindiville took over about a year ago. In January she rebranded the business as SALT. The name of the business was inspired by perspiration as well as the San Clemente surroundings.

“Salt is reminiscent of a lot of things,” Prindiville said. “We live near the water and the ocean, and it was definitely something that made sense to us, and we wanted something that was easy to remember.”

All of the workouts are body-weight oriented. People use their own weight against the resistance of a machine.

Prindiville said people are starting to care more about their health and there are tons of trends in the market.

“With body weight (resistance) training and the (workout equipment), it helps people start at any fitness level to retrain your body to do functional movements,” Pridiville said.

She studied business marketing and said she was always passionate about fitness.

She said using the repeat customer base from the old business has helped her progress the studio.

“The people who have been coming here have been together for about five years now,” Pridiville said. “It’s like a little family here.”

On occasion, fitness lessons also take place on the beach.

“I opened it under a sort of exchange boutique, and about a year ago I decided to make it a flagship location and have it showcase my product,” Lian said. “It’s funky, different and unique. My goal is to keep it different.”

He said he makes 80 percent of the product he sells, including the jewelry, with the eventual goal of making all the product himself.

“I’m constantly watching for fashion trends or art or fabrics,” Lian said.

Lian started his career by going around the world, working with some of the top designer companies in the business.

Later on, he said he wanted to settle into a quieter, more manageable setting and San Clemente provided just that kind of atmosphere. SC

Finnerty Says Farewell Q&A With San Clemente girls soccer coach Stacey Finnerty, who is stepping down after 16 successful seasons

S

tacey Finnerty never intended to be the head coach of a high school program when she ran through a few drills with the San Clemente girls soccer team on the recommendation of a friend 16 years ago. Finnerty, who played collegiately at Cal, was focusing on continuing her playing career but wanted to see what coaching was all about.

Something clicked when Finnerty ran through those drills on that fateful day.

She realized that being on the pitch, teaching and molding young soccer lives, was where she was meant to be.

What followed is one of the more successful and storied high school soccer coaching careers in Orange County history.

In her tenure, Finnerty and the Tritons claimed five CIF-SS Championship titles, one CIF State Regional Championship, finished as CIF-SS runners-up three times, and set a sectional record by appearing in five consecutive CIF-SS Championship matches. In 16 years with Finnerty at the helm, San Clemente advanced to the CIF-SS playoffs 15 times and won nine league titles.

Following a season in which the Tritons went 13-3-7 overall and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, Finnerty chose to hang up the clipboard for good.

The San Clemente Times caught up with Finnerty to reflect on her career and coaching philosophies.

San Clemente Times: Why did you decide this would be your final year as head coach at San Clemente?

Stacey Finnerty: The last couple seasons I felt that my family, their needs, are starting to become more and they’re busier. It was just the inevitable choice that I knew was going to happen at some point (laughs). If I’m going to coach I like to give everything I can and I felt that if I couldn’t give the program and the team the best of me it wasn’t good for them, and for my children as well.

SCT: The girls soccer program at SCHS was middling before you took over and had never qualified for the playoffs. What were some early challenges you had to overcome in order to build the program up?

SF: The program was a little beat up.

They didn’t have any respect from other organizations I would sit in meetings with.

There were other coaches that didn’t really give me that much respect. They’d talk about San Clemente as if it was a joke of a program. That’s all it took for me to say ‘I’m going to do whatever it takes to make sure these girls are represented’. The talent was there. The first group of families got involved and put everything they could into making it an easy entrance for me.

SCT: How would you describe your coaching philosophy?

SF: My philosophy is to identify the strengths of each individual and then motivate them to find out how good they can be. After that, it’s their choice to own their

San Clemente senior long-stick midfielder Ryan Crawford has committed to play at Whittier College. Crawford’s commitment to Whittier continues a trend of Tritons heading to the Division 3 program, including current Poets, and former Tritons, Jay Kassity, Aaron Self and Max Lepley.

talent and to give it back to the team. (My philosophy) is purely believing in players and bringing out what they have and then pushing them to do more when they think they’re done.

SCT: You’re also an AP Biology teacher on campus at SCHS, which can be a tightknit community. What kind of dynamic did that create with you and your players?

SF: I think working on campus has made

it so much more fulfilling because I’m able to be a part of the girls lives’ beyond the field. That’s the whole point of coaching at the high school level, I think. You’re not just coaching a sport at that point … I’m meeting with them about their grades or what’s going on at home. Coaches are special and unique in the way that they’re able to really get to know students and players beyond just a grade. SC

field teams played host to some of the area’s top programs. The annual Triton Invitational was held on March 19 at Thalassa Stadium and featured several San Clemente athletes earning podium finishes, including three event winners.

Julia Becker won the girls high jump after clearing the mark of 5-feet-2-inches.

Senior thrower Anna Gillis won the shot put with a throw of 38-07.50, nearly four feet longer than the next closest competitor. Gillis also placed second in the discus with a throw of 128-03.

The boys jumps team has had a strong start to the season and continued the trend at the Tritons’ home meet. Senior Bennett Secrest (6-0) won the high jump.

Senior Christian Deering (40-04) finished second in the triple jump and junior Christopher Nicol (40-03) took third. Senior Aarron Nesbit (20-09) placed second in the long jump.

Junior Sean Kelsay placed third in the pole vault, clearing the 14-foot mark.

The Tritons will open Sea View League competition on the road against Laguna Hills on March 24.

Boys Tennis Remains Perfect in League The San Clemente boys tennis team ensured its South Coast League record would remain perfect so far this season with a convincing 16-2 victory over Capistrano Valley on March 17. The Tritons defeated Aliso Niguel 15-3 on March 15 to open league play.

In the match against the Cougars, San Clemente’s Michael Bott led the way in singles play. Bott swept all three of his matches. The Tritons’ doubles tandems of Jacob Greenberg and Lance Ding and Chris Torcaso and Tony Gregory swept all three of their matches.

San Clemente will host Trabuco Hills in a league match on March 24.

Pallante Powers Tritons Baseball to League-Opening Win Over Mustangs Looking to get Sea View League play started off on the right foot, the San Clemente baseball team turned to senior pitcher Andre Pallante on March 18.

Pallante, the hard-throwing senior ace of the Tritons’ pitching rotation, did not disappoint. Pallante threw 6 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out six in an 8-1 road victory over Trabuco Hills.

The Tritons (6-1, 1-0 league) got to Trabuco Hills starter Jack Cornish in the second inning and plated six runs, which proved to be more than enough to seal the win.

Dominic Scarlata went 2 for 3 with two RBI and Jordan Fitzgerald went 2 for 4 and scored twice for San Clemente.

Pallante improved to 3-0 as a starter and owns a microscopic 0.34 ERA. Pallante has allowed only one earned run and has struck out 24 batters and issued only seven walks.

Mustangs, Tartans Power Past Tritons Lacrosse The San Clemente girls lacrosse team could not slow down St. Margaret’s during a nonleague game on March 22, as the Tartans stormed their way to a 16-10 victory.

San Clemente (4-5, 0-1) lost its South Coast League opener to Trabuco Hills 16-8 on March 17. Kelsay Bland scored three goals and Jessica De Collibus and Kiley Buckley each scored twice in the loss.

San Clemente (10-7, 0-1) swept the Barons 25-20, 25-15, 25-23, behind a 16-kill effort by Jess Hunt. Bryce Curtis tallied 11 kills and Ian Warner chipped in nine.

Kian Feiner recorded 43 assists and Sean Carroll had 21 digs.

The Tritons lost their South Coast League-opening match to Trabuco Hills on March 17 and will continue league play with a road match against Laguna Hills on March 24.

Big First Inning Powers Dolphins Softball Past Tritons The Dana Hills softball lineup came ready to swing the bat against rival San Clemente on March 22. The Dolphins strung together five hits, including a first-inning home run, to plate six runs in the opening frame and cruise to a 12-6 nonleague victory.

Despite a strong wind gusting in toward home plate, the Dolphins batters were able to hit three home runs. Starting pitcher Serafine Parrish belted a firstinning two-run home run and swatted one more in the fourth, and Carlee Russo hit a grand slam in the second.

San Clemente (5-5-1) was able to mount a comeback in the fourth inning and fifth innings and bring home six runs, but it was not enough.

San Clemente will host a nonleague game against San Juan Hills on March 24.

Prolo Wins Big at Mission Viejo Invitational Swim Meet San Clemente swimmer Brad Prolo had a big showing at the Mission Viejo Invitational on March 19. The junior won both the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. In the breaststroke, Prolo nearly set a new meet record, missing out on it by one-tenths of a second, according to head coach Thomas Dollar.

Trio of San Clemente surfers win NSSA Open final regular season event, five of six seasonchamp titles

T

he National Scholastic Surfing Association Southwest Conference Open season came to a close at event No. 10, March 19 and 20 at the Huntington Beach Pier. Victories in three of five divisions and five of six season titles were claimed by San Clemente surfers.

The sandbars and swell were working, delivering consistent surf in the chest-high range with occasionally larger sets, setting the stage for a slew of great performances by local groms.

Jett Schilling cemented a season conference title in Boys with a convincing win, secured with a near-perfect 9.17-point ride in the final. Schilling also earned a fourthplace Juniors division trophy.

Samantha Sibley also made the event trophy round in two divisions, with a win in Girls and a third in Women. In both divisions, she turned in a string of scores in the excellent range, including an impressive 9.67-point wave in her Women’s semifinal heat.

champ title, and the season winner in Women was Tiare Thompson (La Jolla).

Dane Matson took the Mini Grom division win—his second consecutive victory and fourth for the season—along with the division conference title. The season title was his first in NSSA competition.

“It was a battle to the finish between the top three Mini Groms, Dane Matson, Cole McCaffray and Hayden Rodgers,” Janice Aragon, NSSA executive director said. “It came down to whoever won the final event of the season. Dane pulled it off … and what was pretty awesome is that he won the final on a clutch, buzzer-beating wave.

He needed a high score and ripped a wave that posted an excellent 7.83 to clinch the victory and the conference title.”

Event No. 10 top honors in both Men and Juniors went to Eithan Osborne (Ventura).

And although Kade Matson was traveling in Australia and did not attend this final regular-season event, his impressive string

ane Matson, 10, of San Clemente, hit another amateur surf career milestone on March 20 at the Huntington Beach Pier, taking his first season win in National Scholastic Surfing Association Open Conference competition.

The Mini Grom division victory marked his fourth of the season and solidified his place as the 2015/2016 season champion.

The Concordia Elementary fifth grader said he has been putting in a lot of extra effort lately, training to reach this goal.

“I’ve been surfing a lot, every day after school, and especially practicing my bottom turns,” Dane said. “Bottom turn is key.”

He said he has also been relying on the support of his family for helping him to take his surfing to another level.

“My parents have been taking video of me surfing, and we watch it at home to see what I could’ve done better,” Dane

said. “And I’ve been looking up to my big brother (Kade). He’s been teaching me a lot—when he’s home. He’s been gone a lot lately, so I’ve really been missing him. He was so stoked when he found out I won.

“The level of competition is always at such a high level in the Open Season,” Aragon said. “The kids continue to push the limits of performance and it’s always so fun to watch them. I can’t wait to see what the Southwest kids bring to this year’s Nationals.” SC

He’s coming home this week from Australia and I’m super psyched for him to come back and surf with me more.”

After winning the Western Surfing Association U10 division last season, finishing No. 5 in U12 and realizing his goal of earning an invitation to compete in this season’s Surfing America Prime series, Dane said he set his sights on winning the NSSA Open Mini Grom title this season.

“When I got my last wave (in the final) I was under the pilings and I couldn’t really hear my score,” he said. “When I came in, I heard the announcement and I was just really happy. Now I want to win Regionals and Nationals next. It would be sick to do well in the USA Championships too.”

Dane said he plans on stepping up his training efforts even more in anticipation of the upcoming championship events.

“I am going to be surfing morning and afternoon, every day,” he said. “Oh yeah, and keep on working on my bottom turns.
