Five things San Clemente should know this week Heal the Bay: Under the Pier Fails, Poche Succeeds in Water Quality Report THE LATEST: Heal the Bay, an environmental nonprofit organization, released its annual report card last week regarding beach water quality in California.

This year, the San Clemente Pier’s water quality, at the testing site directly below the Pier, was dropped from an A grade last year to an F, testing so poorly Heal the Bay ranked it second on its top 10 “beach bummers” list.

City officials became aware of problems underneath the Pier last year when the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) began publishing frequent water quality advisories from 100 to 500 feet north and south of the structure. The county started testing the water under the Pier water in 2015.

City officials have said they think most of the problems related to the Pier’s water come from the droppings of pigeons and seagulls that are abundant at the structure. But it also could be coming from a man-made source, such as a sewage leak or runoff from the heavy rains Orange County experienced this winter.

“It likely could be a little bit of both,” said Sarah Sikich, vice president of Heal the Bay. “The last few years we’ve seen favorable water quality, but because of the rain, one part of (the problem) seems to be the storm water runoff.”

Heal the Bay conducts testing throughout the year and compiles and compares the results with OCHA in order to formulate its report card. The nonprofit tests for E. coli, coliform, and enterococcus. These bacteria come from warmblooded animals, Sikich said, but a key note to remember is that these are indicator bacteria and may not indicate a source.

Cynthia Mallett, the city of San Clemente’s environmental program supervisor, said people aren’t supposed to recreate under the Pier, and therefore public health “is being protected.”

Meanwhile, Poche Beach, which had been on the bummers list for years, received “honor roll” accolades and an A grade. Heal the Bay officials praised the water filtration system that was established to help water quality as well as San Clemente Times June 22-28, 2017

but representatives said they would not include a new San Diego meeting.

WHAT’S NEXT: The meeting in Malibu is scheduled for Aug. 9-11 at the Pepperdine University Drescher Graduate Campus, located at 24255 Pacific Coast Highway.

An agenda for the meeting has not yet been published.

Coastal Commission staff, members of the power plant’s majority stockholder Southern California Edison and possibly a Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff member are expected to attend. WHAT’S NEXT: Now that summer is here and more people will be heading to the beach, there is a silver lining, Sikich said.

About 96 percent of beaches in Orange County tested by Heal the Bay received adequate water quality marks during the summer months in the 2015-2016 report because there isn’t as much rain, and the theory is there isn’t as much runoff to introduce bacteria to the water.

Coastal Commission SONGS Meeting in August to Remain in Malibu THE LATEST: At the California Coastal Commission’s May meeting, members of the public asked the governing body to move its July meeting to San Diego County, as an informational presentation is scheduled to take place regarding spent nuclear fuel storage at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

The meeting was scheduled to take place in Monterey, so the Coastal Commission moved the meeting to Malibu, about 300 miles closer.

But last week, U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, CA-49, issued a statement demanding the meeting should be closer to the residents it affects. The Coastal Commission, which schedules meetings a year in advance, moved the item to the Malibu meeting,

Beaches, Parks and Recreation Master Plan Update THE LATEST: PROS Consulting, which is contracted with the city to assist with the Beaches, Parks and Recreation Master Plan, updated the City Council on Tuesday about the process which the city will use to prioritize projects over the next three, five and 10 years. The survey results showed San Clementeans mostly agree on what they want in recreation opportunities, particularly related to beach trail connectivity. More people responded to the survey than was expected, officials said.

THE LATEST: City Council unanimously approved an amendment to its panhandling and solicitation ordinance to include language that covers “aggressive” tactics of solicitation for money on public property.

Council passed an ordinance late last year that allows private property owners to call authorities if someone is soliciting on their land or shared areas and they want them removed, but they stopped short of including public spaces to avoid any laws that would not be compliant with state or federal regulations.

That changed somewhat at the meeting on Tuesday, June 20, when the City Council voted to amend the ordinance to allow people to alert police if they are being cornered, touched or grabbed or verbally abused in public spaces or public amenities, such as the Summer Trolley Program.

Council also directed staff to look at ways to make the new law easier to enforce.

WHAT’S NEXT: Also at the meeting, Council approved a contract service amendment to legal services for Silver & Wright LLP, and during the ordinance amendment discussion, Council members said the law firm could assist in helping the city strengthen the law. —EH

Level 2 Water Restrictions Lifted by City THE LATEST: Without discussion, the City Council on Tuesday voted to lift the level 2 water restrictions that had been in place since the statewide drought mandate to reduce water usage two years ago.

The restrictions urged conservation of 13 to 31 percent reductions in use, and the city staff report said its customers have more than met those goals.

WHAT’S NEXT: City officials discussed during the budget hearing process that the reduction in water usage has affected the operational budget for water services, and it is looking to amend its water rate structure later this year. How this will affect projections related to its operations remains to be seen. —EH www.sanclementetimes.com

Shark Talk

When it comes to swimming or surfing in the ocean, Lowe said people need to be smart.

“We have to have good science, it provides good education,” Lowe said. “We’ve made great strides.”

He said people should continue to use the ocean but to utilize populated beaches, especially ones with lifeguards, as well as to “pay attention to nature.”

He said it’s important that sharks are here because they keep the marine animal population “in check.”

He ended the lecture by saying most people use the ocean as their playground, but it’s the sharks’ home.

“We have to learn how to interact with them in a safe way,” Lowe said.

More than 200 people filled the room at the Ocean Institute, all eager to hear what Lowe had to say about the recent sightings.

Local expert discusses animals during lecture at Ocean Institute

t’s not a rare sight to see a helicopter circling above our beaches and boats so professionals can tag sharks. In the past few weeks, local beaches have had several shark advisories placed and some have even closed.

With the recent sightings, a local expert headed to the Ocean Institute to answer the public’s questions.

On Thursday, June 15, Chris Lowe, Ph.D., professor of Marine Biology at California State Long Beach as well as the director of the university’s Shark Lab, spoke about the animals and ways they’re using technology to learn more about them.

Lowe and his students work with acoustic and satellite telemetry techniques at the Shark Lab to study the movement, behavior and physiology of sharks, rays and gamefish. Lowe discussed their use of satellite transmitters and how it changed their understanding overnight.

“They send a signal into space when the shark breaks the surface,” Lowe said.

This way, along with other trackers, they’ve been able to record shark’s migrating routes and patterns.

He discussed underwater tracking robots they’re developing that allow scientists to get into the shark’s head.

“They have video cameras on them; we can see why the sharks went left or right,” Lowe said.

Art Association Opens Members Show Featuring Historic Buildings As a temporary departure from the San Clemente Art Association’s (SCAA) plein air painting competition, members will exhibit both plein air (outdoor painting) and studio work in a special exhibit held in the Art Association gallery from June 25 to July 27.

“As an additional twist to the association’s usual eclectic mix of art, the show will feature a special category devoted to historic buildings,” a press release from the association stated. “Photography, 3D art and jewelry will also be shown during this exhibit. Winners of show categories will be announced at a free public reception from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, at the gallery.”

Another tool they use is a Smart Tag, which he referred to as a “Fit Bit for sharks.”

“It measures every move the shark makes,” Lowe said. “It stays on the dorsal fin for about 24 hours then pops off and floats to the surface.”

One tool Lowe discussed that will help local lifeguards is a facial recognition software.

“Not only will it characterize the size of the shark, but the species,” Lowe said.

Lowe discussed when they tagged sharks in Belmont Shore those sharks were seen in Dana Point’s water, and they stayed.

“Four of the six sharks we tagged in Belmont Shore have migrated here in the last [few] weeks. None of the sharks we tagged here have migrated there,” Lowe said.

He said the sharks that have been spotted locally are the smaller ones, meaning they’re younger.

As Temperatures Rise, Flex Alerts are Issued to Conserve Energy The California Independent System Operator Corporation (ISO) issued a statewide Flex Alert, which called for voluntary electricity conservation from 2-9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, and Wednesday, June 21.

“Consumers are urged to conserve electricity especially during the late afternoon when air conditioners typically are at peak use. Consumers can help avoid power outages by turning off all unnecessary lights,

using major appliances before 2 p.m. and after 9 p.m., and setting air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher,” according to a press release from the ISO. “During times of high temperatures, demand on the power grid can be strained, as air conditioner use increases. The forecast peak usage for Tuesday and Wednesday was expected to exceed 47,000 megawatts each day in California ISO’s service territory, which serves roughly 80 percent of electricity customers.”

Although the flex alert had expired by press time, the National Weather Service (NWS) in San Diego forecast temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s throughout the week, but as the grid connects many people in southern California, the NWS also issued a “dangerous heatwave” warning for the rest of the week. Sovereign Health, Vedanta Laboratories under Investigation by FBI Behavioral health treatment provider disputes federal investigators

n Thursday, June 15, Sovereign Health, a behavioral health treatment provider based in San Clemente, issued a statement regarding the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s widespread inspection.

The FBI had agents search locations in San Clemente on June 13 that included Sovereign’s headquarters, Vedanta Laboratories and the residence of the company’s CEO, Tonmoy Sharma, among other locations that have not been confirmed with the San Clemente Times. However, according to a post on Sovereign Health’s Facebook page, the company’s Culver City and Palm Desert locations were also searched.

Officials with the FBI said they cannot comment on the details of the search warrants they served the company and other locations, as the investigation is ongoing.

When agents arrived at the locations, Sharma said the investigators threatened his staff at gunpoint.

“The way they executed these search warrants was a disgrace,” Sharma said in a press release. “All they had to do was tell our senior management what they needed and we would have gladly complied. We have nothing to hide. Instead, they burst into our facilities, upsetting patients who are already fragile and dealing with trauma.

They threatened our unarmed staff at gunpoint. And they didn’t even seem to know why they had busted into our facilities.”

In a phone interview on Thursday, June 15, Haroon Ahmad, media and public relations specialist with Sovereign Health, reiterated Sharma’s comment that patients dealing with trauma were affected by the FBI’s presence. According to Sovereign Health’s release, Department of Health Care Services members handed out pieces of paper with additional resources and information about other treatment centers in the area where the patients could go.

their own accord to go to other treatment providers.

When asked which phone number family members of the patients under the care of Sovereign Health could call if they had concerns, Ahmad said they could call the 24/7 service line on their main website. When the SC Times called the corporate office phone number on Wednesday, the call was redirected to a Sovereign branch in Fort Myers, Fla. The number a representative gave the SC Times was answered by an automated message that did not identify on the line as belonging to Sovereign.

City Attorney Outlines Possible Legal Strategy to Confront Toll Roads

an Clemente’s primary legal counsel has pored over various documents to find avenues to stop the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) from establishing a toll road through the city’s neighborhoods, city attorney Scott Smith said at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 20.

Smith said the TCA is required to construct “environmentally sensitive” highways and that at least two of the proposals would likely damage such areas in San Clemente. A local measure passed in 2007 related to environmental spaces would deem the roads inconsistent with the TCA’s strategy, Smith said, adding that because of that measure, the city could argue that it would not be able to share the same authority the TCA has to building a highways through the designated open space.

toll roads have been approved at this time, as they are going through the required environmental process, but the TCA has published the suggested routes. Many have been rejected by residents and the City Council.

“Some of (the proposals) will be in large areas owned by the city, and the city’s response would be that those properties are not for sale and never will be for sale, and Caltrans and TCA would not be able to show a better use for those properties,” Smith said.

Smith also mentioned the TCA’s development fee on commercial and residential development is still being collected for one alignment that has been abandoned, and the city could challenge the reason for being required to continue to collect the fees.

Smith also said they will seek out legal obligations related to Los Patrones Parkway, which will connect Oso Parkway to Cow Camp Road, in keeping that road

publicly available.

“We are working in cooperation with local homeowner’s associations, all of the homeowner’s associations,” Smith said.

“Much of the open space that’s protected in San Clemente is protected by private homeowner’s associations.”

Smith said the City Council authorized BB&K to speak with the HOAs about creating open space, conservation and view space easements and to participate in restoration of the open space. Mitigation agreements are in place in the open spaces, some of which were forged more than 40 years ago by developers, Smith said.

The city has not declared that it will take legal action against the TCA at this time, and no action was taken during the meeting.

Smith said the issues may be brought to the attention of the TCA’s staff and board of directors in the near future. SC

Ahmad did not see the weapons drawn himself, but said, “it could have happened at one of our other locations.”

FBI officials said their investigation and service of warrants was done legally.

“Law enforcement officials executed search warrants approved by a federal judge that authorized them to search the premises as part of an ongoing criminal investigation,” said Laura Eimiller, a spokesperson for the FBI in Los Angeles. “The actions of the agents and officers involved in the search were in full compliance with the law and our investigation is ongoing.”

Sovereign employees were asked to give out their contact information and social security numbers to agents, said Ahmad.

As of Thursday, June 15, two days after the initial search, Ahmad said normal operations have resumed at Sovereign’s San Clemente location, but could not verify if Vedanta Laboratories—described by Ahmad as a toxicology lab used for Sovereign Health’s client needs—has returned to regular business.

“We are not letting the retaliatory actions of bullies get in the way of the important business of providing top-notch care for our patients with addiction and mental health issues,” Sharma said. “We know what is behind this pattern of harassment and strongarmed tactics. We will not be intimidated and we will prevail.”

Sovereign sued the city of San Clemente in 2016 in federal court over zoning laws that regulate where sober living homes and treatment centers can be placed. That same year, the city sued Sovereign in Orange County Superior Court for what it claims were continued disruptions and for not following ordinances. Both lawsuits are still ongoing. Sovereign is also in litigation with California Department of Social Services (CDSS) over what they claimed was “a pattern of harassment by officials” against Sovereign’s employees. The company also filed a lawsuit against Health Net, Inc. and several of their affiliates to end discrimination against rehabilitation providers. SC www.sanclementetimes.com

Dear Mr. Ed Sachs, I’m a 25-year homeowner in Mission Viejo. I’m writing you to help correct your understanding and public misstatements about the South Orange County public eruption opposing the 241 extension through existing neighborhoods and habitat.

You dismissed the public efforts of citizens in San Clemente and other communities as the result of “professional organizers” and you used your political position to disparage the organic opposition to extending the 241 to I-5.

Mr. Sachs, I invite you to visit with me and others who have begun and executed the grassroots efforts that are the doorto-door, neighbor-to-neighbor opposition you disparaged and mischaracterized. I can assure you, there are only working parents, homeowners, small-business owners, students and the like who have started and driven any opposition you are seeing.

There are no professional organizers and there is no budget to elevate the discussion… only moms and dads and young people who are informed and passionate about their environment and community, and about the empirical measurement of negative impacts TCA’s proposed toll road routes would impose on environment and community… and on people and families.

I challenge you to correct your disparaging public misstatements or to produce evidence of your claim, made from your position of political standing. Who are the “professional organizers” you claim in your official comments? Prove your claim.

I can make that challenge because I know and work with the moms and dads and students who you have dismissed and disparaged.

I can make that challenge because I can list the doors and businesses and children’s community organizations and teachers and students who are slowly becoming aware of your organization’s project. As for the “organizers” you reference, to call them “professional organizers” is simply demonstrably false. Prove your claim, made as a trusted empowered official, or retract it.

Professionally, I spent 20 years as a marketing director for a Fortune 200 company, focused on organizational environmental sustainability and public engagement for product development. As a leader, you and I both know that there are always principled arguments made in good will on both sides of big issues. Disparaging those of good will on opposite sides, as you have San Clemente Times June 22-28, 2017

done, is destructive and seems counter to your recent statements about the importance of “dialogue.”

Besides the issues raised in Cord Bauer’s excellent letter in the June 8-14 edition of the San Clemente Times, there’s another that the toll road flunkies gloss over in their hubris-fueled campaign to complete their flawed vision. Realistically, the work currently underway to widen I-5 through San Clemente will only address current peak traffic loads, and will completely build out the existing right of way.

Any toll road “solution” that dumps more vehicles onto the freeway, whether that occurs to the north or through San Clemente, would again overwhelm the infrastructure and further exacerbate the longstanding problems that Caltrans is finally addressing. When would a southbound extension of the 241 carry the most traffic? That’s right: weekends.

This is an issue on which the San Clemente Times must dig in, by practicing serious investigative journalism and outspoken editorial advocacy. The toll roads discussion has a rich history of costly misjudgments and downright distortions. Its status as a quasi-public agency confers extraordinary powers that pose a genuine threat to our community. It’s time for our community newspaper to stand tall in this fight.

Since attending a recent ocean awareness event, I have become a more conscious consumer of seafood.

Recently, I ordered a shrimp dish at a local San Clemente restaurant. I asked the waitress where the shrimp came from.

After an extended inquiry of staff, she came back with a shocking response: the shrimp was imported from India.

My subsequent research revealed that 94 percent of U.S. shrimp supply is imported from countries like India, Indonesia and Thailand. Most of the imported shrimp is “farmed,” grown in huge industrial tanks in cramped conditions, using antibiotics and other chemicals to prevent diseases.

When it comes to safety and sustainability, consuming responsiblycaught U.S. wild shrimp is a better choice than farmed shrimp. Consumer Reports recommends people purchase shrimp certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, shrimp from Whole Foods Market, and those listed as “Best Choices” or “Good Alternatives” on Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Guide at www.seafoodwatch.org.

Proponents of the toll road extension say that projected large traffic increases in South Orange County in future years make it necessary to extend the 241 toll road to relieve future congestion. Is the basis for their projections realistic? They may be overstating future traffic increases for five reasons. First, the state of California is using vehicle taxes to make it more expensive to own and drive cars. Second, regulations and taxation are driving a trend line for businesses, employees and their cars to move out of California. Third, technology will soon allow cars to be safely spaced more closely on freeways, easing congestion. Fourth, state-imposed rules, taxes and regulations are lowering spendable income available for private transportation. Fifth, the state believes that for environmental reasons public transportation options should be favored over private vehicles. There is no clear need for toll road extension.

alma Hayek is the latest Hollywood sex symbol to undergo the “ugly makeover” for a dramatic performance, and it’s not exactly a bad thing. Usually, when a beautiful actress downgrades her looks, she’s accused of aiming for an Oscar, a la Charlize Theron in Monster (2003). But here, in Miguel Arteta’s Beatriz at Dinner, we have a fine performance and transformation from Hayek in a rather independent and low-key satire.

In San Fernando Valley, Beatriz (Hayek) is a lower middle class “healer” who works with physical health and body massages. Two of her clients are the wealthy couple, Cathy (Connie Britton) and Grant (David Warshofsky), whose daughter Beatriz helped care for her as she was ill. One night after giving Cathy a massage, Beatriz discovers her car won’t start, and she is invited to stay for a work dinner party Grant is hosting.

John Lithgow co-stars as a rather antagonistic party guest, and Chloë Sevigny and Jay Duplass also appear.

Beatriz at Dinner isn’t particularly subtle with its direction and narrative, but it does effectively focus on social commentary on racial issues and culture that The Dinner failed to do last month. Arteta’s film was scripted by Mike White, who is the pretty clever writer of Dead Man on Campus (1998) and The Good Girl (2002), but here he plays it safe, maybe intentionally. Most of the themes are on the nose, but not unpleasantly. Beatriz doesn’t try to break new ground, but reminds us that people you think you might know can change at any second. SC

Ohana fest returns to doheny

or the second year, Doheny State Beach is set to host the Ohana Music Festival, featuring returning grunge icon Eddie Vedder from the popular 90s band Pearl Jam as well as SoCal’s Social Distortion, Jack Johnson, Pixies, Fiona Apple and more.

The music festival added an additional date from last year, making it a full weekend of music and local food and beverage vendors on the beach from Friday, Sept. 8 through Sunday, Sep. 10.

Eddie Vedder’s second performance at the Ohana Music Festival comes with unexpected anticipation this year. Given recent news in the sub-genre, his show might be emotional for some devoted fans.

Although ticket costs are upwards of three digits, and the headliners will close before the local bars come to life, concert goers will also be contributing a portion of their expenses back to South Orange County outdoor organizations such as the San Onofre Parks Foundation and Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association.

OC Fairgrounds Concerts at Pacific Amphitheatre Venture out of South Orange County by taking a trip up north to the OC Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa for one (or several) of their countless concerts at the Pacific Amphitheatre. This year, the OC Fair opens its gates to the public on Friday, July 14 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 13.

Bands such as Dashboard Confessional, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blue Oyster Cult, The B-52’s, Violent Femmes, Peter Frampton, Justin Moore, Steve Miller Band, the Commodores, Boz Scaggs, Colbie Caillat and the Isley Brothers are all making appearances this year.

Dana Wharf Live Music Cruise Feel like spending time out on the water without the fear of sharks or renting a boat? Dana Wharf Whale Watching in Dana Point presents a Live Summer Music Cruise from May 27 through Oct. 28. Guests can cruise aboard the Dana Pride with both upper deck and inside seating while enjoying local bands such as Cali Conscious, Waterhouse and Flock of 80’s with a complimentary glass of Dana Pride Punch.

Evening cruises run an hour and a half, or the length of a headliner’s set, every Saturday from 8-9:30 p.m. for adults 21 and up.

Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness, Dana Point’s local indie-pop musician-turned-star, has made it possible for locals to enjoy a large production-quality show for the entire family free of cost.

OC Parks’ Summer Concert Series will host the former Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin songwriter under the moniker Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness on Thursday, Aug. 17 at Bluff Park at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point. Concert goers can still bring blankets and their Tommy Bahama Costco chairs like other traditional OC Parks shows, but will be encouraged to stand up and move at McMahon’s show.

“I grew up here and so much of my music was written within miles of Salt Creek, so I think it’s the perfect place to play these songs,” McMahon said. “However people decide they want to listen is up to them, but it’s always my goal to get people on their feet. I hope whoever shows up to this one leaves feeling like they were entertained and would come back again.”

Most restaurants in the area are willing to let you sample a few varieties of beer or wine at a time, so take advantage of the opportunity and discover your new favorite libation this summer. There’s so much to do in the area that allows residents to stay local for their vacations. They don’t have to be expensive, and better yet, they can be customized for the people who are planning the day trips. Below are some ideas for families, couples and the friends in Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

The Family in San Juan Capistrano GETTING OUT Zoomars Petting Zoo Are your kids into animals? Hop on over to Zoomars to see ponies, pigs, goats, sheep, cows and more. But, there’s more to do than just pet the animals.

Activities not in the ocean can provide fun-filled summer

Although shark activity seems to have slowed down a bit since the relentless sightings and beach advisories in May, they could be hanging around longer, and if that happens, people will need an alternative to enjoying summer on the shore or lakeside. The ocean is arguably the most treasured feature of San Clemente, but it can’t be fully enjoyed when the risk or the thought of apex predators abound, which may give people peace of mind to try something different. Within an hour’s drive at most, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor summer activities in or near South Orange County.

Probably the largest lake in the immediate area, Lake Elsinore offers opportunities for summer fun for the whole family. About an hour’s drive through Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano, there are plenty of fishing opportunities as well as lessons on various watercrafts, boating and more. Lake Mission Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita Lake are closer alternatives, but different rules apply for each. As long as you keep it in one of the city’s designated enclosures, barbecues and fire pits are allowed on the beaches.

Like a series of torches signifying the start of summer, the fire pits are typically all burning from San Onofre to Dana Point Harbor each night. San Clemente beaches and pier are open from 4 a.m. until midnight. If you can find one during the Fourth of July celebrations, they’re a great way to keep warm under a sky bursting with color.

Even though the ocean shores of San Clemente and Dana Point may still have lingering sharks, the beaches constantly need help with cleaning. Some of the prominent beach cleanup organizations in the area include San Clemente Beach Conservation Program (SCBCP), Surfrider Foundation and OC Coastkeeper. Parks in San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano have some of the most enchanting views in the area. At Pines Park in Dana Point, people can get a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, let the kids frolic on the playground or enjoy a picnic. The same can be said of San Clemente’s Linda Lane Park, a favorite among locals. San Juan’s Reata Park is an escape from the hustle and bustle of the main city thoroughfares. Nearby Casper’s Wilderness is a great place to take a hike with the family.

For Adults Many restaurants and bars offer trivia nights, live music and other activities. enowned American country guitarist and singer Junior Brown is stopping

by The Coach House on Saturday, July 8, for a show that is sure to please true fans of the country western genre.

An Americana artist known for his unique voice, songwriting and double necked “guit-steel” guitar, Brown has released nine studio albums while appearing twice on the Billboard country singles charts. Brown’s signature “guit-steel” sound combines standard and steel guitars, allowing him to switch mid-song between the two while singing.

Fans will recognize hits such as, “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead,” which earned Brown a County Music Association award.

Brown has also received several Grammy nods and has been involved with an array of collaborations, films and television projects.

Most recently, he recorded the “Better Call Saul” theme song for the AMC TV series.

Born in Cottonwood, Arizona in 1952, Brown’s love of country music developed at an early age. That passion for country and western music deepened by the late 1960s, and he could often be found honing his skills in small clubs.

“I played more nights in honky-tonks during the 70s and 80s than most musicians will see in a lifetime,” Brown said. “I did so many years of that, night after night, four sets a night, 15-minute breaks; I mean after that, you gotta get good or get out.”

Senior Singles Seek Different Kinds of Relationships

M

ost singles who are over 50 that I encounter agree on one thing: they would like to be in a committed relationship. But what they don’t agree on is the kind of a committed relationship.

Some want marriage.

Take Ben, 77, a widower, for example. He and his fiancée are getting married in September. He said he can’t wait.

“She is the last woman I will ever love,” Ben said.

This February, my ON LIFE AND LOVE AFTER 50 partner Greta and I atBy Tom Blake tended the Dana Point wedding of Chris, 83, and Tina, 77, after the couple had endured a 13-year, long-distance relationship.

Marriage still happens with older singles, but it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Some older singles are in a long-distance relationship. She lived in England, Chris in San Clemente.

Another example - Trent and Rachelle.

When they met, he lived in Utah, she in southern California. They married and now live in San Diego. Often, long-distance relationships morph into a different type of relationship.

If long-distance relationships don’t grow, they will often fizzle out.

Then there are committed couples who live together, but don’t plan to remarry.

My partner Greta and I fall under that umbrella. We’ve been together as a couple for 19 years and have lived together for the last 16 of those years. We have no plans to marry.

Now, there is a relatively new category

of senior committed couples, the LAT relationship. LAT is an acronym for “Living Apart Together.”

The University of Missouri Health describes this relationship as couples who have an intimate relationship but live at separate addresses.” Apparently, this type of relationship is growing in Europe.

One would expect that while people in LAT relationships are free to do as they please, the same expectations about commitment and fidelity as in other committed relationships would be honored.

Not everyone in a LAT relationship is happy about it. One Orange County widow cooks dinner every night for her male friend and then he returns to his own home to sleep. She said she is lonely and would like to get remarried. But he doesn’t want that. So, she will have to decide what is most important to her and make a tough decision.

No wonder senior dating is so difficult.

Deciding what type of relationship to have is the final piece of the puzzle.

American Pride San Clemente Resident and WWll Veteran Honored on Memorial Day in D.C. RACHEL WILFORD, SAN CLEMENTE TIMES

W

orld War II veteran and San Clemente resident Leslie B. Jones, 91, was invited to participate in the Memorial Day Observance Program in Washington, D.C., on May 29. This year, the ceremony commemorated the 75th anniversary of the war.

Jones, who served in the U.S. Navy and fought onboard the Destroyer Escort, was honored as a representative of the WWII Memorial during the Presentation of the Wreaths ceremony. Each year, American war veterans are invited to present wreaths in front of the Freedom Wall to pay tribute to the 400,000 Americans who were killed in combat and the 16 million who fought during the war.

Following the ceremony, Jones served as one of the Honorary Grand Marshals in the annual National Memorial Day Parade that passes in front of the White House. The parade is televised nationally and hosts many celebrities, including this year’s guest British Royal Navy veteran and celebrity chef Robert Irvine, as well as musical performances by bands Daughtry and John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting. During the parade, Jones rode in a vintage 1946 Cadillac convertible that led marching bands from all 50 states.

According to the American Veterans Center, the nonprofit that founded and organized the event, the parade draws hundreds of thousands of spectators who want to pay tribute to those who have served and are still serving, making it the nation’s largest Memorial Day event.

“The Memorial Day program is for those who have put their own lives on the line for our country,” Jones said. “Freedom has a special meaning that many will never know. Freedom is not free.”

This is the third time Jones has been honored at the Memorial Day Observance. Two Pearl Harbor veterans presented wreaths alongside him, including 105-year-old Ray Chavez, the nation’s oldest surviving Pearl Harbor veteran.

Jones said he was especially proud to have his youngest son, Jason, accompany him to Washington, D.C., to support him during this year’s program. But it was a somber occasion this year, as Jones’ wife, Karen, who always traveled with him to previous ceremonies, died last year from

complications related to lung cancer.

Jones enlisted in the Navy in 1943 at age 17. He served in all three of the WWII campaign theaters, earning various awards, ribbons, medals and stars, including the Presidential Unit Citation with two stars, which was awarded to him by former President Harry Truman.

One medal has accompanied Jones consistently since he enlisted and holds a special meaning for him.

“I wore my Saint Christopher medal during the Memorial Day Program as I always have since 1943,” Jones said. “My medal has been with me many places and shared my many experiences, keeping me safe as I traveled the world.”

Jones, who grew up in the Los Angeles area, returned to southern California after he was honorably discharged from the Navy following the end of the war. He then attended the University of Southern California where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree.

Jones discovered his love of flying when he flew his first plane at age 14. He later obtained his pilot’s license and earned six national and world records in aviation.

Exercise is also important to Jones. He has earned multiple gold medals in the National Senior Games (Senior Olympics), climbed Mt. Whitney and has competed in triathlons. He ran in the Los Angeles Marathon at age 75.

Since he joined the Navy in 1943, Jones has written down anything and everything he has accomplished in an extensive journal that he someday plans to give to his two sons and four grandchildren so they may remember his many achievements. SC www.sanclementetimes.com

San Clemente woman’s business helps dogs in many ways

ogs can be very sensitive to danger, but training them to identify nearby rattlesnakes can be lifesaving.

Hiking up a trail in the open spaces of San Juan Capistrano on Tuesday, June 20, a pack of seven dogs and their walker made their way through the foliage to a scenic view.

Jessica Price, owner of Seaside Hounds, takes packs of six to eight dogs on daytime hikes around the South Orange County area for about an hour. Price’s service gives dogs the exercise they need while their owners are at work.

Price also takes the dogs to a trainer who uses rattlesnakes that have had their venomous bites nullified to practice honing in on the scent and behavior of the snakes. She holds these training clinics once a month through August.

“They set up three stations and learn the sight, the smell and the sound of the rattlesnake, and then you teach them to look for warning signs,” Price said, adding she sees snakes at least once a week on her hikes. “My dog, for instance, if he senses one he’ll nudge me. If I keep getting closer, he’ll actually nip me.”

Price said some time ago, she was two feet from a rattlesnake she didn’t see and her dog alerted her.

“It’s about learning what signal your dog is going to give you when it senses a rattlesnake,” she said.

According to the California Department

of Fish and Wildlife, rattlesnake activity typically picks up at the end of spring and the beginning of summer. After a cold night, the snakes will usually come out during midmorning to raise their blood temperature.

The department also recommends people hike often-used trails and to avoid tall grass and weeds in places known to have snake activity.

Price began her career working with rescue dogs in Brooklyn, New York. She helped with adoption placements for the dogs and provided training when needed.

Having ran the business for four years, she knew she wanted to work with animals on her own terms. She started her business in San Clemente by networking with a veteran dog walker.

Because she takes multiple dogs with her on her hikes, Price said she ensures the dogs are comfortable with one another and gives the dogs an initiation. She said almost all dogs can come along for group hikes.

PAUTSCH ENDS COLLEGIATE CAREER WITH NCAA DIVISION III TITLE San Clemente’s Marshall Pautsch ended his distinguished career as a pitcher on the Cal Lutheran baseball team by helping the Kingsmen win the NCAA Division III Championship.

Pautsch, who graduated from San Clemente High School in 2013, and Cal Lutheran rallied to defeat Washington & Jefferson in a best of three series.

Washington & Jefferson won the first contest 12-3, but Cal Lutheran came roaring back to win the next two, including a 7-2 triumph in the decisive third game on May 30.

It was the first Division III title in Cal Lutheran program history.

Pautsch, a right-handed pitcher, started the first game for Cal Lutheran in the championship series. He surrendered seven runs (four earned) and eight hits over five innings. While it wasn’t his best outing, Pautsch was instrumental in the team reaching the championship.

Pautsch, the team’s No. 1 starter, tossed a gem in the Division III tournament’s opening round against Wheaton.

Pautsch pitched eight innings, allowing just two runs while striking out 10 in a 4-2 victory.

He also earned the win in Cal Lutheran’s 9-7 victory over Concordia in the Division III West Regional Championship, which punched the team’s ticket to the Division III finals.

Pautsch led the Kingsmen in games started (18), wins (10), innings pitched (114 1/3) and strikeouts (105) his senior year. He tossed three complete games San Clemente Times June 22-28, 2017

TRITON GIRLS RUGBY WINS FIRST TOURNAMENT In its first-ever appearance in competition, the San Clemente Triton Rugby Club’s girls U12 team had a strong showing. The newly formed team went undefeated in the Torrey Pines 7s Rugby Tournament in La Jolla and captured the division title on June 17.

The local team was formed just one month ago, and plans on having a busy summer schedule full of competitions.

The Tritons finished the season with a 26-8 overall record.

Born January 19, 1931 Den Haag Holland • Passed away June 18, 2017 Fien was born in Holland and then immigrated to California in 1958.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolf and Josina Bierhuizen, two brothers Hank and Dolf, six sisters, and her husband Yujiro.

Fien is survived by her daughters and stepsons, eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She lived in San Clemente for over 40 years. She was a loving wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother and great grandmother.

In the college ranks, it was once again Point Loma Nazarene University taking the title, while local Saddleback Community College finished in fourth place. The high point for the Gauchos team came in Kevin Skvarna’s big win in the longboard division.

t’s been a good year for the Tritons.

First a football title, then a few dance team titles, and now San Clemente High School is home of a national champion surf team. Last weekend, under bluebird skies and a playful southern hemisphere swell at Salt Creek, the best scholastic surf teams in the country gathered for the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s Interscholastic National Championships. By the end of the weekend, the Tritons had captured their 13th national surf title, while Shorecliffs Middle School won their 14th national title.

After claiming respective California state titles back in April, San Clemente High and Shorecliffs Middle School were considered favorites, but their sheer dominance stunned everyone. Last year, Huntington Beach High School won the national title by a handful of points, but this time around, surfing in local waters, the Tritons came ready to exact revenge.

In the varsity finals, San Clemente’s Curran Dand finished third, while teammate Liam Murray finished fourth. On the girls side, Hana Castamanes represented with a strong second place showing to help provide some much-needed points. Blue Engleking finished fourth in the longboard division. That was enough to give the Triton’s a five-point edge on their Orange County rivals to the north and the varsity squad another national title. It was enough to get the ball rolling for the extremely

potent junior varsity squad, which ran the table in the final. Sweeping the top five spots, Reef Tsutsui won the division, while Davi Toledo, Bryce Crane, Jacob Atwood and Jaric Fink rounded out second through fifth, respectfully. In the end, the junior varsity team beat Huntington Beach with a final score of 138 to 67. After a performance like that, it’s fair to say the surf forecast looks bright at San Clemente for the next couple of years.

“I’m so proud of the San Clemente High School surf team. This past weekend, they brought home the 13th National Scholastic Surfing Association title. 2017 High School National Champions!” said San Clemente High School coach John Dowell in a post on Facebook.

Meanwhile, Shorecliffs Middle School

continues to be the premier powerhouse for the next generation. With three surfers in the final, Hagan Johnson took second, while Nico Coli and Dane Matson placed third and fourth, respectively. Unfortunately, none of the ladies at Shorecliffs found their way to the final. Taking a page out of his longboard champion dad’s book, Kai McPhillips won the middle school longboard division for Shorecliffs and Ethan Coleman finished fourth. In the end, Shorecliffs’ A-team ended up beating Florida’s Cocoa Beach to claim their 14th title, while their B-team finished a respectable fifth, followed by Marco Forester Middle School in sixth.

When the horn blew and the final was over, Kendrick was “chaired” up the beach by an ecstatic crew of classmates. And when it was announced he was the new national champ, he was hit by a shower of sparkling apple cider.

“I felt I had a chance, I gave it everything I had and it just worked out. I’m stoked!” grinned Kendrick when it was all done and dusted.

An A-and-B student throughout his high school years, he has the talent and head on his shoulders to go far. Congrats on the title and good luck in all future endeavors. SC
