State Lands Mulls Draft Environmental Impact Report

THE LATEST: City Council voted 3-1-1, with Mayor Bob Baker dissenting and Councilwoman Lori Donchak absent, to enact a study on the effects of the proposed ballot measure to split San Clemente into voting districts.

The Council was presented with three options: adopt the ordinance and have it go into effect starting with the 2018 election, put it on the ballot for this year or require the study.

The study has 30 days to be completed, and that could push the ballot measure past the Aug. 12 deadline when it needs to be submitted.

Baker was vocal in his opposition to splitting San Clemente into districts, reiterating that he thinks doing so is “a dumb idea.”

Baker said he would have like to see it put on the ballot because he believed it would fail.

Resident Jim Bieber began this campaign following the city’s recent passing of a set of laws that govern short-term lodging units, one of which he said he owns and operates.

Since then, City Councilmembers and Bieber have been after each other about whether district elections would be beneficial to San Clemente. Bieber and his constituents say they want elections to be fairer to other neighborhoods that don’t have a City Council representative. A map that Beiber put together shows four of the five councilmembers live within blocks of each other in the southwest portion of San Clemente.

THE LATEST: During a meeting July 27 at San Clemente High School, representatives of the California State Lands Commission and Southern California Edison, the operator of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, discussed potential future impacts as part of decommissioning.

Specifically, the meeting addressed the draft environmental impact report (DEIR) for the decommissioning offshore that’s under the jurisdiction of the California State Lands Commission.

“All the commercial plant decommissioning will remove everything 3 to 10 feet below grade,” said Tom Palmisano, the vice president of decommissioning for Southern California Edison. “It’s less environmentally intrusive rather than digging 60 or 100 feet down to dig up everything.

That decision is up to the Navy.”

City Council District Elections Ballot Measure

THE LATEST: Eleven South Orange County elected officials, including San Clemente Mayor Bob Baker, have sent a letter to the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees opposing the proposed $889 million bond measure. Next Wednesday, Aug. 10, trustees will decide whether to place the measure on the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

On Aug. 2, Jennifer Beall, a representative of Assemblyman Bill Brough’s office, reported at a San Juan Capistrano City Council meeting that in addition to south county mayors, Sen. Patricia Bates, Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Lisa Bartlett, Board of Equalization member Diane Harkey and Brough all oppose the bond. Beall said the letter was set to be sent to CUSD Tuesday night.

“We urge you to determine realistic needs and exhaust all potential sources of funding before you go back to the taxpayers for more money,” the letter concludes.

Over the last several months, CUSD trustees have debated placing an $889 million bond measure on the Nov. 8 ballot, which would be used to leverage state funds and pay for more than $800 million of deferred maintenance of district facilities. In San Clemente, that maintenance could include improvements for elementary schools, middle schools and $91 million in enhancements for San Clemente High School alone.

Trustees will vote on the measure two days before the Aug. 12 deadline for placing a bond on the ballot. Two-thirds of the board—five trustees—must approve the measure.

Avenida La Pata Opening to Feature Vendors, Car Show Aug. 13 THE LATEST: To celebrate the opening of the long-anticipated Avenida La Pata connection from San Clemente to San Juan Capistrano, the Orange County Transportation Authority and cities of San Juan and San Clemente will host a grand opening event with food vendors, free giveaways and a car show.

After two years, the $126.5 million project will connect San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

WHAT’S NEXT: The ribbon-cutting event takes place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, in the middle of the La Pata extension.

Parking will be available along the road in San Clemente or at San Juan Hills High School. The road will be completely open beginning Aug. 14. —EH

Teenager Leads Police on Car Chase Through San Clemente THE LATEST: A two-hour car pursuit by law enforcement was instigated by a 17-yearold boy from north Los Angeles County, according to California Highway Patrol.

Officer Rafael Reynoso, the public information officer for the CHP Capistrano Area, said the boy did not yield to officers who attempted to pull him over around 12:20 p.m. on Monday after he committed a “traffic infraction” in north LA County and took off when officers attempted to stop him. He was driving a black Lincoln Navigator. The boy is estimated to have reached speeds of 80 to 90 miles per hour during the pursuit.

He then made his way to southbound Interstate 405 and down to Interstate 5 through Orange County and into north San Diego County, where he apparently ran out of gasoline and surrendered to officers. Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Department and CHP all responded to the incident.

Strange enough, the boy was able to navigate Interstate 5 through almost no traffic—a rare occurrence during the middle of the day. Multiple broadcast news stations covered the chase via helicopter.

WHAT’S NEXT: Reynoso said no one was injured in the pursuit, and there were no traffic collisions. The boy has been arrested for felony evasion of a police officer, and as of Monday he was in the custody of CHP at the Capistrano Area office. Boys & Girls Club Earns ‘Painting A Brighter Future’ Grant from DeNaults True Value Hardware Store The Boys & Girls Club of the South Coast Area is getting a fresh coat of paint, thanks to a partnership with DeNaults True Value Hardware store. The club is one of many across the nation selected to receive “Painting a Brighter Future” grant.

In San Clemente, the Boys & Girls Club of the South Coast Area serves more than 2,000 children each year.

The Boys & Girls Club will use the donation to paint doors and improve the games area.

“Painting a Brighter Future” is the signature program of the True Value Foundation, uniting True Value retailers with Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. In total, the True Value retailers will donate more than 3,000 gallons of paint to Clubs across the nation. The program also provides grants to elementary, junior high and high schools in neighborhoods nationwide.

San Clemente Village Needs Volunteers San Clemente Village is a new nonprofit that is preparing to launch a membershipbased program in September designed to keep senior citizens independent and living in their homes for as long as possible.

The Show May Go On

Group presents preliminary plans for historic and vacant Miramar Theater

F

or nearly two decades, one of San Clemente’s landmark buildings has sat vacant. Located in a premium ocean view lot, the Miramar Theater has been little more than an abandoned fixture at the southbound gateway to the city.

But that may be changing.

During Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, Wayne Eggleston, a former City Councilor and Mayor of San Clemente and current members of the planning commission, Planning Commissioner; Frank Darras, one of the owners of the theater; and Daniel Conrardy, the architect, spoke about some of the future plans they have for the Miramar.

Marc Spizzirri, a representative of El Camino Real Estate Holdings, LLC, the company that owns the Miramar, said the company is trying to develop the minimal but thorough alterations for the theater.

“This has been sitting vacant since the early 1990s, and a number of developers have drawn plans, and we’ve had some false starts,” Spizzirri said during a phone interview on Friday. “As I get continual feedback about what (the public) would like to see, we’re trying to develop the most economic plan and one that could actually work to get the building operational.”

Spizzirri’s organization bought the Miramar in 2007, but it hasn’t been altered in that time.

Eggleston said he has been working with the group that is trying to get the theater up and running again.

“I’ve been trying to get the Miramar off the ball for years,” Eggleston said. “I’ve been very disappointed with City Council not doing much in North Beach. They didn’t do anything with the El Camino Real parking lot, then there’s the roundabout…there shouldn’t be any controversy about that, but there was.”

The old bowling alley, which basically needs to be scrapped and rebuilt, is planned to be a specialty food court with 10 to 12 high-end vendors, and there are plans for an outdoor eating area.

Conrardy said the plans will maintain the theater’s stage and they want to make it an “asset for the community and the north side of San Clemente.”

The theater is planned to be completely redone but without seating and will serve as an event center, according to the current plans. The group said they will try to keep the ceiling and other features intact.

Spizzirri said he’s not certain it will have to be completely rebuilt, but with modern safety standards it’s likely a lot of things will have to be upgraded.

“Times are different with more restrictions from safety, seismic measurements, and our assumption is that there’s going to be a lot of shoring up in order to use it and have the same space,” Spizzirri said.

The tower will also have to be torn down and rebuilt because “it’s really a mess,” Eggleston said. Even if everything goes according to plan at the planning and permitting stages, Eggleston said it will be three to five years before anything in the theater is operational.

The Miramar was built in 1938 and the bowling alley was constructed in 1946, according to a city of San Clemente Historic Structures Report.

Over the years, plans have come and gone before City Council and the Planning Commission. A few years ago, a title dispute cast a cloud over any plans the owners would have come up with.

The city is asking for financial details,

which Eggleston said is “unprecedented.”

“We’re asking for some parking waivers and some fee waivers, but no one expected during the first meeting during the presentation that any decision would be made regarding fee waivers,” Eggleston said.

Because the building has been designated as historically significant, Eggleston said it should be eligible for parking waivers, as is noted in the city’s General Plan.

“We asked the city to approach the project with the same enthusiasm they did with the Casino and the Ole Hanson Beach Club,” Spizzirri said. “All we’re doing is asking for the same thing the city has done before, and we believe the Miramar is just as significant and important.

And I’m sure people are sick of looking at it just sitting there.”

The group hopes to file a formal application with the city in the coming weeks or a couple months.

City Manager James Makshanoff said it’s unclear at this time what the city’s role in the project will be. Many factors will depend on what is part of the application

that is expected to be filed in the next few weeks.

“It’s just a big question because so far we’ve just talked in generalities about what the project is, and we don’t have something specific as to what kind of impact it’s going to have on that area,” Makshanoff said. “We need those to determine what requirements we’re going to have, such as parking needs. It’s just really too early to say what the city involvement is going to be until we have some more formal information. So far we’ve heard some big ideas of an event center.”

Makshanoff said other projects the city has been able to complete, such as the Ole Hanson Beach Club, have taken precedence with city efforts.

“I think between the beach club and the Miramar, both of them will go a great way to energize the North Beach area, and it would be a great focal point for that community,” Makshanoff said. “We’re excited and we look forward to working with the ownership once they present something in more formal detail to us.” SC www.sanclementetimes.com

San Clemente Feels Pier Pride

S

ummer 2016 has been spectacular for the San Clemente Pier. Many residents have remarked on how fantastic the July 4 fireworks were, hosted from our own iconic Pier and viewed up and down the beaches of south Orange County.

The Pier was a star in Ocean Fest’s 40th anniversary and did us proud.

If you missed the videos on Facebook, record numbers of junior lifeguards have taken the plunge off CITY COUNCIL CORNER the Pier as part of their

By Lori Donchak credential training this summer. And those are just three examples of how important the Pier is to our unique San Clemente quality of life.

A new nonprofit foundation has formed to protect and celebrate the Pier. PierPride is a non-profit organization formed in partnership with Friends of San Clemente and the city of San Clemente. PierPride’s mission is to fundraise to fill the gaps between city funds and Pier needs to restore the Pier to the best version of its historic self.

This is no small task. Our Pier hosts over 2 million visitors a year. Ocean weather conditions can be a challenge to a wooden pier, even without an El Nino event. And, as the home of Tower 0, the Pier fulfills a critical marine safety function.

The San Clemente Pier has been a part of our identity since 1928. It was part of the original San Clemente master plan and

for almost 100 years has been the place to fish (yellowtail, sea bass, halibut), catch a sunset and spot some very fine surf activity.

Pier Pride was formed based on the insight that, to a person, San Clemente residents have emotional or personal stories of something wonderful that happened at the Pier.

The Pier is part of our lives and deserves to be its best possible self.

One of my favorite stories concerns a Marine family. Their soldier figured out that San Clemente’s ocean-camera panned the pier at specific times. When based in Afghanistan, he asked his wife and kids to stand on the pier, and they would wave and throw kisses to him at a designated time so he could experience a taste of home from across the world. What an important connection.

Just to maintain the pier structure is a $450,000 annual undertaking for the city.

The discontinuance of California redevelopment funds in 2012, a key funding mechanism for the Pier, makes money scarce, and competing demands on the city budget make it difficult to find money beyond the basics. Most maintenance efforts concern the structural integrity of the pier, such as the new planking at the base installed this year, or recent piling upgrades.

This is where PierPride comes in. The foundation’s immediate wish list includes improvements that enhance the Pier experience: more frequent coats of paint, new interpretive signs, new bait tables, vandalproof trash cans, improved water foun-

tains, bicycle racks, solutions to bird waste, and if the funds can be had, a Pier bathroom upgrade. These are improvements that can’t be accommodated in the city budget but would be highly valued and appreciated.

PierPride’s long-term goal is to set up a reserve fund that ensures our pier is protected no matter what circumstances. Building an even greater sense of pride in our pier among residents is the definition of success.

At the Movies: Blanking Out with Jason Bourne

knew something was fishy when the poster for the new Bourne movie wasn’t given the usual ‘The Bourne _____’ title, and instead was just simply given Jason Bourne. It’s been almost a whole decade since Matt Damon starred as the popular action hero in The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), ending what was thought to be a trilogy.

Then in 2012, suddenly Jeremy Renner popped up as the lead in The Bourne Legacy. Now we’re back to square one with Damon and Julia Stiles. Riz Ahmed and Vincent Cassel co-star.

Former amnesiac and government assassin Jason Bourne (Damon) is back once again, but this time to find out the truth about his father, who also worked for the CIA. Former operative Nicky Parsons (Stiles) also returns to support Bourne. New CIA director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) and cyber ops head Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander) are on the trail for Bourne and Parsons after they discover illegal activity in the division.

The most perplexing thing about Jason Bourne is that Paul Greengrass and Christopher Rouse return as not only director and editor, but also as the film’s screenwriters. It’s both men’s first time writing for the franchise, and it shows.

The plot and narrative for Bourne are lazy and predictable on top of unnecessary. Stiles is given a thankless send off and Damon has barely any lines.

Even talented additions of Ahmed and Vikander are wasted, in between the excessive shaky cam and flamboyant car chases. And it seems this year is the most underwhelming summer movie season since 2009. SC

Reducing Stress will Increase Children’s Academic Performance

A

s the new school year sneaks up sooner than usual, it is time to acclimate our children back to their school-year schedule. It is also a good time to think about how your family stays well. At the Wellness & Prevention Center, education and prevention are based on the wellness model, which is the opposite of the disease model. The goal of the wellness model is to maximize wellness by making healthy choices as outlined in a holistic model that address all of the interactive domains in our lives. One of the wellness domains is social wellness which addresses how students interact with the environment and community. Teens seem to primarily interact in their social world through their cellphones. This sets them up for increased stressors that can be very foreign to the adults in their lives. To help teens avoid these stressors, parents need to have discussions about the relationships their kids are choosing and how they’re interacting in their relationships. Kids need clear rules for social media use. An excellent source to for parents and teens about social media smarts is the site www.cybersafetycop.com.

The emotional domain concept stresses that individuals are aware and accepting of their emotions, while attempting to maintain an optimistic outlook. As children grow this can be a struggle, especially in this era of 24-hour news coverage with tragedy and conflict constantly replayed on large and small screens. It is important for the influential adults present in a child’s life to help the find reasons to maintain optimism and hope during challenging times. Developmentally, teens need to be self-centered and focused on their emotional development, without taking on the added stress around them. Parents can help children by openly discussing emotions and reactions to events in their lives. It’s also important to refrain from always providing San Clemente Times August 4-10, 2016

solutions to teens’ emotional struggles, and instead listen and let them process events with your empathic support.

The wellness model stresses the interplay and importance of each of the domains; however, so much of overall wellness comes from the physical health domain and our activity level and diet. In my work with youth and their families, I find the most neglected part of a teen’s physical health is sleep hygiene (meaning going to bed on-time and getting enough sleep). The main culprit is the time of day that school starts and the often overwhelming amount of homework and extracurricular activities. Parents can help their students by setting bedtimes and encouraging kids to manage their time wisely, exercise regularly, limit sugar and caffeine in their diet, eat healthy meals, and maybe sometimes (teachers don’t read this!) allowing them to turn in an assignment late if it means staying up too late trying to finish. Help your child by teaching them how to advocate with their teacher if you see any class contributing more to their late nights.

There are more domains to the holistic model of wellness, and I encourage you to explore the intellectual, spiritual and occupational dimensions as well to better understand how each contributes to you and your family’s well-being. Most importantly, we need to teach ourselves and our teens how to pay attention to what our bodies are telling us—both emotionally and physically and seek help when needed. Early intervention in both physical and mental health leads to healthier outcomes and lowers the risk of teens making poor decisions involving substance use and unhealthy relationships. Good Moves South Coast Conservatory to host Hip-Hop Master Class

ena Minnick-Bull, owner and operator of South Coast Conservatory dance studio, will host the Hip-Hop Master Classes on Aug. 27 and 28. The classes feature professional dancers and instructors Chuck Maldonado, Amy Allen and SuperDave.

SCC Dance focuses on education, which is provided from the studio out into the community, helping people who otherwise wouldn’t have the access or opportunity.

The program also aims to “sustain the arts in the community and to provide performing arts scholarships,” according to the event press release.

With the Hip-Hop Master Classes, any-

one can join, but SCC is sponsoring three of its students from the Orange County Gang Reduction & Intervention Partnership (OC GRIP) to reward them for their hard work in school and in the dance programs.

Minnick-Bull said this was a way to make more students feel included and give them something to participate in.

Fighting For Me hosts fundraiser to help victims of sexual abuse ,

any sexual abuse survivors remain in the shadows and many of those victims have not been able to stand up and get help. Fighting For Me, a non-profit organization that is helping to make sexual abuse counseling available to survivors, came to San Clemente to help raise awareness and funds during an event on Saturday, July 30, at the Outlets at San Clemente.

Amanda Zarate, the founder of Fighting For Me, said the goal of the organization was to help victims find their voice and to make sexual abuse counseling more available to people throughout the country.

The mission goal of the organization is to make free sexual abuse counseling the standard of care in the U.S. for every man, woman, and child affected by sexual abuse including their loved ones.

At the event, people put red war paint on their faces and recognized people who they said are worth fighting for. Zarate said Kiersten Ellis “was the brains behind the war paint campaign.”

“We tag three friends and use #warpaintcampaign and #worthfighting4,” Zarate said.

During the event, music was played, a

raffle took place and children and dogs were dressed in costumes all in the name of helping victims and showing them that they have “warriors” to support them.

Jake Yarter, a financial representative of Modern Woodmen Financial, came to the event to match up to $2,500 of what Fighting For Me raised. “I found out about Fighting For Me because of my sister,” Yarter said. “She works in the drug rehab world and now helps Amanda, and oftentimes sexual abuse is linked to drug use.

I am here today to support Fighting For Me, and to recognize the Hometown Hero award, won by my sister, Kelsey Yarter, which gives credit to someone in the community who goes above what is expected.”

Other organizations, such as World Financial Group, were in attendance to show their support. Nike Outlet employees were seen putting on war paint and many of the outlets and local businesses donated prizes and funds to the event. With the effort of these establishments and the support of everyone who came, Zarate said Fighting For Me organizers hope not another victim goes unnoticed and without help.

SC SURF GIRLS TEAM WINS PATEADORES CUP The San Clemente Surf girls 2003 team placed first in the G’03 Mercurial Division at the Pateadores Cup on July 24 in dramatic fashion. The local club defeated Pateadores LA in a penalty kick shootout, 5-4, to claim the championship.

The tournament was held throughout Southern California over a two-day stretch.

San Clemente Surf defeated FC Golden State, Mission Viejo Pateadores and the Rancho Santa Margarita Pateadores to reach the finals.

SHOOTOUT FOR SOLDIERS COMING TO DANA HILLS HIGH SCHOOL The California stop of the Shootout for Soldiers charity lacrosse exhibition will be held at Dana Hills High School from August 6-7.

The event, which aims to use the sport of lacrosse to engage communities across the nation with local military veterans, is a day-long, continuous lacrosse game that features dozens of local teams. Shootout for Soldiers has become famous for providing teams the chance to compete in one of 24 one-hour games.

One of the highlights of last year’s Shootout for Soldiers event in Dana Point was a game between active-duty soldiers and veterans. The event raised $23,975, which was added to the program’s nationwide total of $408,931 raised in 2015.

Proceeds raised at the event will directly benefit Shootout for Soldiers’ four national charities as well as two Californiabased charities, the United States Veterans Initiative and Team Rubicon.

Shark Stories

Longtime ranger wants to dispel the myths surrounding sharks

T

he first time Jim Serpa came face-toface with a shark, it was not under ideal circumstances.

Serpa, a San Clemente resident and former supervising ranger at Doheny State Park, was diving with friends in the Bahamas. He was 60 feet deep in the water when a friend handed him a large conch shell, which was harboring an unseen hermit crab. The crab reached out and cut Serpa’s finger, drawing blood.

What came next sounds like a scene out of Jaws, only with a happy ending.

A large bull shark was nearby and could sense the blood in the water. It decided to glide in for a closer look. Serpa knew he was in trouble, but once the shark came within four feet of him, he could tell it was not being aggressive. After a few nervous seconds, when man and shark sized each other up, the shark swam off. It was a moment Serpa said he will never forget and it sparked a years-long fascination with the animal.

“Right then, I’m thinking everything I’ve heard about sharks may not be true because I thought I was going to be lunch,” Serpa said from his living room, where shark fossils adorn the walls. “Everything I’d seen on television and these old movies, if there was blood in the water, you’re in trouble.”

His interaction with that shark in the Bahamas caused Serpa to dive headfirst into the world of sharks. He majored in environmental geography and minored in zoology while in college, and had access to observe sharks in the area for years while working at Torrey Pines State Beach and Doheny. After taking countless courses and logging hours in the field, he has become a respected figure in the shark community.

On July 30, nearly 200 people attended one of Serpa’s famous campfire talks at Doheny State Beach. It was standing room only as people gathered around the selfdescribed “educated shark nerd,” hoping to glean some new information about the popular creatures.

Serpa, who is retired after serving as a ranger at Doheny for 23 years, is wellversed on many things. He gives talks about Native Americans, native plants, whales and dolphins. But it’s his shark lectures that always draw the biggest crowds.

The fascination with sharks has been in the public’s conscience since the dawn of modern pop culture. The fin poking above water, the grace with which they move and their physical appearance all make for ideal Hollywood imagery. From Jaws to the Discovery Channel’s popular Shark Week programming, sharks hold a distinct place in our minds when we think about

the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it.

While some may find sharks intriguing, there are others that are downright terrified of them—and for good reason.

As the ocean temperature began to rise over the past three months, several sharks have been spotted in the area. There was also one gruesome attack off the shore in Corona del Mar in May, when a woman was bit by what is believed to be a great white. A humpback whale that died at sea and drifted down the coastline last month also drew in several large great white sharks that were feeding on the carcass, which Serpa saw firsthand while on a boat.

Serpa preaches caution during his lectures, hammering home the fact that sharks are wild animals and that swimming alone outside of the surf zone is not a good idea. Being around schools of seals out in the open water is also not advised.

But, he does not want people to be afraid of going into the water. The title of Serpa’s shark lecture is The Myth of the Monster, and one of his main goals is to dispel the

belief that all sharks mean to harm anyone that treads into the water.

“If (sharks) really wanted us, they could have us. There are a lot of people in the water, a lot of sharks in the water and it’s extremely rare to be attacked. There are five to 10 deaths worldwide from shark (attacks),” Serpa said. “They’re not just sitting out there with their bibs on, waiting to get you.”

Decades ago people were convinced that most sharks were vicious man-eaters, Serpa said. But as more scientific research about the animals was conducted, the paradigm began to shift.

The craze that came along with Discovery Channel’s Shark Week programs helped to show sharks in a different light, Serpa said. While some shows occasionally have the gratuitous scene where a shark hunts a seal or another animal in the water, many of the shows now feature interesting alternate angles, like migratory patterns or unique behavior. Serpa and his friends used to call each other after

Shark Week shows aired and laugh about what the show got wrong. The public’s newfound appreciation for sharks, coupled with actually getting facts straight, has made Shark Week viewing much more enjoyable for Serpa these days.

Serpa tries to condense his knowledge down into a short presentation for shark fans young and old. He brings his fossil collection to his lectures so people can get a better grasp on just how big, or small, some sharks can be. He has placards with multiple shark teeth glued onto them, labeled so people can see the difference between a leopard shark’s tooth and a thresher shark’s tooth. Both are species that roam in the waters nearby.

His career as a parks ranger may be over, but Serpa is still an avid observer of nature. He treks down to the ocean frequently, and stays in touch with his former colleagues, who key him in on interesting sightings they come across on the water.

Caroline Marks defends US Open of Surfing Women’s Pro Junior title

A

s the Vans US Open of Surfing came to a close at Huntington Beach Pier on Sunday, July 31, local surfer Caroline Marks was crowned the US Open of Surfing Women’s Pro Junior Champion for the second year in a row.

Marks, 14 years old, defended her 2015 US Open Women’s Pro Junior title, and earned 1,000 points towards her ranking on the 2016 Women’s Junior Tour for North America, where she currently holds a No. 5 ranking.

Marks and her family lived in San Clemente for two years, and just moved to San Juan Capistrano. She bounces back and forth between living in Orange County and her hometown in Florida.

Marks told the San Clemente Times that defending her Women’s Pro Junior title is the realization of a goal she’s worked hard to attain.

“It’s one of the biggest accomplishments I’ve made, if not the biggest, and definitely my favorite win I’ve ever had,” said Marks.

She felt confident going into the competition after winning the US Open Women’s Pro Junior the year prior, and said she tries to treat every event the same.

“I have the same mindset for every event.

oc Paskowitz has a story unlike most conventional 10-year-olds. Not only does he carry the namesake of his famous grandfather, Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz, he’s also surfed and traveled around the world since he was born, and lived everywhere from the sands of San Clemente to remote islands in the South Pacific.

The Paskowitz family is well-known for being “the first family of surfing,” as Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz, his wife and their nine children, including Doc’s father, Adam, started running the Paskowitz Surf Camps every summer in San Diego, Mexico and New York back in 1972. every event my A game. I surfed as strong as I could, and at every event I’m really hungry and always striving to win and do the best” said Marks.

In 2015, Marks became the youngest woman to surf in a Championship Tour (CT) event at 13 years old after she earned a wildcard spot to surf in the Swatch Women’s Pro at Lower Trestles.

This week, she will be traveling to Bali with Surfing Magazine and other groms for what normally is an all-boy’s surfing trip called Grom Games. Not only is Bali one of Marks’ favorite places to surf, she is the only female surfer to attend the trip.

event last week.

With tough competition for these groms, only Kobayashi advanced into the semifinals where he placed in third and was unable to make it to the finals event.

Houshmand said this was his first year competing in the US Open, and that it was a big learning experience for me, overall a really good experience, and the biggest contest I’ve ever done.”

He made it far in the Men’s Junior competition, advanced through the Men’s QS Trials and competed in Men’s QS first round but was unable to advance further.

“It was amazing, just seeing how many people were down there, the whole crowd, and being surrounded by the top guys, I was just taking it step by step” said Houshmand when the San Clemente Times asked about his experience surfing in US Open this year.

Meanwhile, Kade Matson and Crosby Colapinto surfed well, but fell just short of advancing into Round 3.

Junior Girl’s Results Izzi Gomez and Samantha Sibley competed against each other in Round 1 Heat 1, with only Sibley advancing into Round 2.

In the Junior Girl’s quarterfinals, Marks placed first in Heat 1, Kirra Pinkerton placed first in Heat 4, Bethany Zelasko finished second in Heat 3, and Sibley took third in Heat 2.

In the semifinals, Marks took first in Heat 1, while Zelasko and Pinkerton competed against each another in Heat 2. Pinkerton took third right behind Zelasko who placed second and advanced into the Finals to compete against Marks.

Marks took first in the finals and Zelasko placed fourth.

Surf Camps for the past six or seven years, he travels from one destination to the next to surf, learning about the world around him.

“One of the reasons we travel is to meet and understand local communities no matter where we are,” said Tracey Paskowitz, Doc’s mother.

Tracey Paskowitz said the family is always trying to “give back”, not just with foundations like Surfer’s Healing, but by being active and helping where it’s needed most.

Doc has lived and surfed in places like Tahiti, Fiji, Kiribati, New Zealand, Australia, the Cook Islands and British Columbia.

Doc said some of his favorite places are the islands he lived on.

“They have the same personality in a way, but they are all different,” Doc said, adding the best waves he surfed were in Tahiti and Canada, while San Onofre and San Diego remain his favorite local spots.

In his most recent travels, Doc has visited some of the same cities his father also traveled to as a child. He said in South Dakota he almost rode a herd of buffalo, and one

of his most memorable experiences was in Rarotonga, where he swam just feet away from 60-foot humpback whales. “It’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen,” Doc said.

When Doc grows up, he said he might want to take up where his great uncle left off, playing the voices of Bugs Bunny characters, or maybe he’ll become a professional skateboarder or surfer.

“My dad was one of the best skateboarders of his time, and was one of the best surfers in the world behind Bill Hamilton and Mark Richards,” Doc said.

Doc likes to study math, science, chemistry, oceans and music. Some of his hobbies include skateboarding, spear fishing, motocross and building mini robots.

In the next few months, Doc will travel to the east coast with his family following the Surfer’s Healing Foundation. Then he will
