Why Calf Strength Matters for Overall Health

lmost daily, we read in both medical and lay journals, news media and social media sites ideas as to how we might preserve our overall health and brain functioning. Diets, supplements, exercise and games have been touted as ways to enhance our hearts and heads as we approach our 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond. But calf size? Really?

It has been found that people with larger calves are less likely to fall and suffer a fracture. And they also have better blood circulation, better blood sugar management and better cognitive abilities.

Our calf, or the lower half of our leg, is comprised of two muscles: the gastrocnemius and the soleus. The soleus is the stronger muscle that pumps blood back upward to the heart, and its strength in pumping is directly related to how strong that muscle is, and when the pumping is strong, the circulation is better. Our heart health depends on good circulation, so that leg-to-heart connection is pretty vital.

Higher calf strength helps to control blood pressure and lessen the risk of heart failure after a heart attack. Researchers have sug-

gested that the ideal size for good cardiovascular protection is 33 centimeters for women and 34 centimeters for men.

Strong calves and feet help us to maintain good posture and balance. They stabilize our gait and help to correct missteps.

Ever trip over an uneven sidewalk but manage to stay upright? Thank your calves and feet. If our lower legs and feet are strong, there is less strain on the hips and knees.

Calf size and strength may play an important role in controlling blood sugar levels. A study published in iScience on Aug. 5, 2022 showed that muscle flexion helps to regulate glucose transport into cells. In two experiments with 25 study volunteers, the researchers found “the human soleus muscle could raise oxidative metabolism to high levels for hours without fatigue, during a type of soleus dominant activity while sitting, even in unfit volunteers.” In other words, our calf muscle can facilitate a chemical process in which oxygen is used to create energy from carbohydrates, using the available glucose in our bloodstream.

What seems surprising is that strong calf muscles are also associated with better brain health. Strong leg muscles lead to

improved blood flow in the body, and this will also include blood flow to the brain.

Also, it should be noted that people with strong calves are more likely to be long distance walkers, speed walkers, runners or active in other sports. Studies have shown that people who walk fast often or play racquet-type sports such as tennis and pickleball have demonstrated slower cognitive decline.

Physically active people tend to be sociable and that greater sociability can also help us to retain cognitive abilities.

Healthy aging should include keeping those calf muscles strong. The gastrocnemius is the bigger muscle that runs from the thigh, under the back of the knee, and to the lower leg. The soleus is the deeper one. It sits under the gastrocnemius and runs from under the knee to the Achilles tendon at the back of the heel. These muscles work together for pointing toes, bending the knees and walking, running, jumping and dancing. They need to be strong if we want to walk easily or faster or participate in intense exercise.

ping fosters balance and control as well as strength, and an example exercise is hopping 10 to 15 times on each leg for three sets. Simple calf lifts will strengthen these muscles. Start with your feet on a hard surface, preferably with your heels a bit lower than toes. Push your body up onto your toes 20 times, then rest and repeat three times. Progress to doing this on one foot, aiming your body as high as possible. A slightly more difficult exercise is the split squat jump. In the lunge position, with one foot forward and the other behind you, bend both knees then jump upward. Do these eight to 10 times, then switch legs and repeat. Rest a minute and repeat the process three or four times. All these exercises are best done in bare feet since most shoes do not help with foot strength. You will have better control from the toes and better balance in bare feet. While simply the size of your calves should not be the ultimate goal, developing these muscles will definitely lead to better overall health.

Increased mobility and balance lessen the risk for falls. Cardiovascular and cognitive conditioning can contribute to happier aging.
