MIDWEST HOSTS 1ST COUNCIL MEETING The 1st Quarterly Council Meeting will be hosted by APO Midwest-Chicago Alumni on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Sofitel - Chicago O’Hare in Rosemont, IL. The occasion also coincides the Induction of the Executive Officers and Board of Directors of APO Midwest - Chicaco AA which which will be headed by their incoming president Bro. Dante Castillo of Pi Chapter ‘68.

APO Midwest-Chicago is one of ACNA’s most dependable alumni association. Ever since hosting the 2nd ACNA convention in 1994, the group had traditionally been hosting the bi-annual 1st council meeting at this windy city.

7th IHMDO MISSION AND SER VICE PR OJECT UNDER WAY SERVICE PROJECT UNDERW

The Alpha Phi Omega (Phils.) Alumni Council of North America is once again spearheading a medical, dental, optical and humanitarian service in the Philippines. This will be held on May 24, 2009 in Tondo, Manila in conjunction with Samahang APO Ng Tondo (SAPOT). As in the past, thousands of our fellow Filipinos who are in need will benefit all the services that Alpha Phi Omega has to offer. In this endeavor, ACNA has obtained commitments from all of its member Alumni Associations all over North America as well as APO USA brothers and sisters in the medical and dental fields who gave their intention of going and volunteering for the said service in the Philippines. As always, the ever ready volunteer brothers and sisters from APO-DAP and APO-MAS will also be fielding medical and dental personnel to perform their respective field of expertise in this service project.

The service project will be chaired by ACNA past president Bro. Eugene Licauco and assisted by another ACNA past president and LIUF chief Bro. Mel Gonzales and another service veteran Bro. Dr. Paul Villafuerte.

The committee have anticipated the magnitude of the task ahead. Manpower will not be an issue but medical equipment and supplies will cover the bulk of the cost. Therefore, they are asking each and everyones assistance in cash and in kind for the success of this project.

This is the time for ACNA to work hand in hand and shine fulfilling its objective. There is a sense of accomplishment in knowing that we are true to our goals and are doing our best to achieve them. There is also a sense of achievement in knowing that we are in this together; overseas alumni, American and Filipino-based brothers and sisters working in unison to accomplish a goal that is foremost in our values . . . SERVICE TO OTHERS. Let us do our best to make this noble project a success, please help in any way you can.

Message from the President Brothers and Sisters, my warmest fraternal greetings!

First and foremost, I would like to commend APO AA of Midwest under the leadership of Bro. Dante Castillo, for graciously hosting the first quarterly meeting of APO ACNA/ARNA. I also would like to acknowledge all the Board of Directors for attending this meeting and all Executive Officers and Cabinet Members for making the first quarterly meeting a success.

I am proud to say that APO ACNA is going strong. With the formal acceptance of APO Alberta and APO Hawaii Alumni Associations, there are 22 Alumni Associations in North America including Canada. Recently, 4 Alumni Associations were granted charter membership by APO Philippines which are APO Central Valley of California Alumni Association, APO British Columbia Alumni Association, APO San Diego Alumni Association, and APO Washington DC Alumni Association. We can proudly claim that APO Alumni Council of North America is the biggest foreign based Alumni Association outside the Philippines.

We continue to contribute our resources, time and energy to worthy humanitarian projects. Again, we will sponsor the 7th International Humanitarian Medical, Dental, Optical Mission in Tondo Manila in cooperation with SAPOT (Samahang APO ng Tondo) on May 24, 2009. We will also participate and contribute to the APO Philippines Medical Mission in Caticlan, Aklan on May 29, 2009. Another worthy project we will undertake after the mission in Tondo, is to visit SAPOC (Samahang APO ng Cainta) Learning Center, where some of us are already generous contributors to the program. We will continue to explore areas where our support is needed.

We maintain our close ties with APO Philippines. A number of APO ACNA Delegation will attend the 25th Biennial Convention in Boracay, Aklan, on May 27 to 31, 2009. In so attending, we continue to establish communication with our Brothers and Sisters in the Philippines. As a show of support for APO Philippines, I encourage all APO ACNA Alumni Associations to positively respond to the request for advertisement in the Souvenir Program.

We are making progress on the review and amendments of APO ACNA CBL when the Head of CRC Committee, Bro. Mar Garchitorena, recently went to the Philippines and met with Bro. Atty. Jorex to discuss how our APOACNA CBL would be amended within the confines of APO Philippines CBL. The past 3 months have been very encouraging. We have leaders who are open-minded, dedicated, committed, and very supportive. We will be true to our calling and we will create programs to respond to the salient call: APO ACNA – “Kabalikat at Kaagapay Tungo sa Kapayapaan at Kaunlaran”.

APOGLA STRONGER THAN EVER By: Brother Shane Miranda, Kappa Beta

APOGLA volunteers did a “Good Turn” last March 14, 2009 feeding homeless families at the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission

APOGLA 2008, during which the torch had already been passed, albeit so eagerly grabbed by the new administration and with a pseudo-battle cry of Honesty, Integrity, Transparency seemed as though this so called “new order” of APOGLA politics was ready to prove themselves worthy of the task at hand. Under the premise that these new kids on the block would be the so called “saviors” of our beloved GLA from the (tried and tested) “old guard” they so conveniently branded as “King Makers”.

Fast forward to the future, APOGLA 2009 and everything seemed to come out perfect. It sure was perfect . . . it was a perfect mess, to put it ever so mildly. It was a turbulent last quarter for our beloved organization but thanks to the old guard, we got our swagger back. Like US Marines sworn to protect us from enemies foreign and in this case domestic, the old guard stepped up big time and prevented a major catastrophe.

To forget one’s purpose is the commonest form of stupidity.

And it seems that the H.I.T. squad forgot what their purpose was. It would have been nobler to declare oneself wrong than to insist on being right - especially when there is only one right. As the dust has settled and lines have been drawn, APOGLA has found itself splintered, a bit battered but still has remained resilient as ever.

With the influx of new faces and new blood into the APOGLA fold and with renewed vigor, the dawn of a new era has begun; GLA is slowly picking up the pieces with a fresh new start.

Going back to the basics so to speak and towards building a better future with cheerful services with stronger men and women of Alpha Phi Omega.

To quote Nietzsche “That which does not kill you, will make you stronger.” Throughout all the chaos, APOGLA has come out stronger than ever.

APO TOR ONT O AA DON ATED USED BOOKS AND USED CL OTHINGS TORONT ONTO DONA CLO The recipient of the Alpha Phi Omega Toronto Alumni Association Book Drives and used clothing to the Philippines, is our Brod. Ben S. Cordero, Alpha ’51. The turn over was held on January 14, 2009 at Binanuanan Sur Elementary School, Pili Camarines Sur. The Alpha Phi Omega International Pili Alumni Association Inc. of Camarines Sur’s officers, the members and teaching staff of the Binanuanan Sur Elementary School, and the municipal council extended their heartfelt thanks to the APOTAA for donating three (3) boxes of used books to the school. Also worth mentioning, was the donation of three (3) boxes of used clothing to Church of ChristLater Day Saints at San Vicente.

Brother Mayor Alexis San Luis of Pili openly said that the donation was a great help to all residents of said province. He also gave a special merit to Bro Benjamin (Benjie) Cordero from Alpha Chapter for doing his part and making the community service possible.

Students listened to their teacher about the importance of the books to their school.

APO AASD RICE DISTRIB UTION AND FEEDING PR OGRAM APOAASD DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM

By Gordon Gordo Last January 17, 2009, the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association of San Diego (APOAASD) took part in this humanitarian outreach to our poor “kababayans”, in the town of Barangay Talaba 4, Bacoor Cavite. Our Alumni Association support to this project was all made possible through the leadership of Brother Alex Nuestro. He single handedly pursue to raise enough funds from individual members here in our APO Alumni Association and from individual donations he was able to come out with funds to purchase 13 sacks of rice in the Philippines. Why 13 sacks of rice? He claimed that the 13 sacks of rice they shared to the poor represent the thirteen letters of our ALPHA PHI OMEGA fraternity. He further explained to us that this rice donation were divided into three (3) kilos per package (representing APO’s 3 cardinal principles: Leadership, Friendship and Service) and was subsequently distributed to more or less, two hundred (200) poor families of the barangay. After the rice distribution, a small feeding program was also done for the poor children. The APO Rice Distribution project was made possible through joint partnership with the Alpha Phi Omega Kabite Alumni Association (Imus-Bacoor, PEZA, Tagaytay and Dasma), APO Las Pinas Alumni Association and the APO Christian Group.

Here in APO Alumni Association San Diego Brother Alex Nuestro is our current Secretary He was been instrumental in various APOAASD activities and project one of which is our Association scholarship fund drive which it is now in its third year of 100% tuition funding from individual contribution from Association members. His proactive in various task and projects sometimes goes above and beyond the call of his duty to serve.

His regular reports and update to the association serves and remind us (active and inactive) to wake-up and be a part to carry the load of a true APO member. A very quite man in person, but with a clear vision to help our poor kabayan. A typical example of a Good APO Leaders, a true APO Friend and always intend to serve and make a difference in the life of others.

APO HA WAII AA - ADOPT A HIGHW AY SER VICE PR OJECT HAW HIGHWA SERVICE PROJECT ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY is a public service program for volunteers to pick up litter along Hawaii’s state highways and it’s a way for environmentally conscious association like Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association (APO-HI) to make a personal contribution to a cleaner state.

APO-HI agreed to pick up litter on a section of Hawaii at Highway-2 free way, north bound to North Shore (Pipe Line), from Kau ka Blvd overpass to Kipapa Bridge. APOHI has adopted a 2 mile portion of the state highway for a minimum of 2 years, pick up litter on that highway at least 4 times per year, and provide safety training for our volunteers before each clean up.

The state Department of Transportation will: Provide high visibility vests, trash bags and safety information, remove filled bags from the roadsides and erect a highway sign to recognize APO-HI’s cleaning efforts.

APO-HI’s purpose on this project is to provide service towards Hawaii’s environmental and ecological awareness and also alleviates the Department of Transportation expenditures of over $2 million a year just for picking up litter.

APO DREAM TOUR

by OJ Lopez, Pi Chapter 2005-A, Director for Fraternity ’07-’09 When I got my US visa last November, it was just suppose to be me and my family spending the holiday season in the land of the free, away from any involvement in the APO world back in the Philippines... and so I thought.

December 25, 2008 - 8PM CST - Bedford, TX: Finally my parents agreed that I could spend time with APO members in the area. Being the only APO member in the family sometimes its hard to convince them that what I’m doing is something productive. Anyway, in the Reyes’ residence was a gathering of the APO Dallas - Fort Worth AA wherein Pi Brod Bems Domingcil is its president. When we arrived my parents were impressed of the hospitality of the APO members. After dinner they left me there because they know I wouldn’t be able to take off that easily. We had great food, drinks, and a lot of fun! After a few hours of food and drinks consumption . . . A brod from Pi (my chaptermate) inquired . . . Jun Tapay: Punta ka ba Boston Convention?

OJ: Hindi eh . . . JT: Pupunta ako, sama ka sa akin . . . several hours later we were on our way! And I thought I was hallucinating!

APO USA Convention - December 27-30, 2008, Boston, MA: It was a blast! The convention was great, 2000+? brothers in attendance, a lot of workshops to choose from, service projects, legislative sessions and a variety of events that would appeal to everyone. They also have very helpful information service, and . . . APO USA brothers know how to party! Fellowship with: Jun Tapay, APO USA NP Maggie Katz, OJ, Mel Gonzales with APO Phils NP Mel Adriano Fellowship at Room 1258 with the Brothers from Maryland; with Brothers from Rho Gamma (CSU Long Beach).

December 28, 2008 - Bridgeport, CT: Pi is family... we went to the wake of Bro. Leo’s father to share his grief. Pi Brods Rommel Artes, Jun Tapay, Leo Baltazar, and OJ December 31, 2008 - January 1, 2009 - New York: The City that Never Sleeps . . . I never thought at this point in time that I will be able to spend the New Year in Time Square, New York!

Bro Bems (kung hindi ka tumawag boring sana pasko ko), Bro Jun Tapay (You rock! from the plane ticket, hotel, food, etc but most of all for the brotherhood), Sis Tess & Bro Ivan Reyes and the rest of APO Dallas-Fort Worth, Bro Mel Gonzales (especially for the convention souvenirs), Bro Mel Adriano, Bro Joey Soriano, Bernie Castillo, Bro Leo Baltazar, Bro Ted Topacio and wife Nadine (sa paghatid sa NY and the pictures sa snow ), Bro Rommel Artes & Bro Jojo Bunao (adopting me while in NY),? Edwin Jamora (sa pag drive around Philly), Sis Archy Savant (the best!), to all APO USA brothers who kept on partying even when the hotel marshalls told them to stop and to all APO Phils brods and sisters who I’ve met along the way, thank you for the warm handclasp. Being in the fraternity for only 3 years (batch 2005-A), a collegiate member status, I am very much overwhelmed that I am able to travel the different places in the Philippines for being elected as the National Director for Fraternity. But I never imagined that I will be able to join in APO’s international events and meet brethren in North America.

As a collegiate member, I say youth is not a hindrance to represent or an excuse to misrepresent our beloved Alpha Phi Omega. Our alumni members are always there to support us wherever they are in the globe, I will stand anywhere to testify to that.

Alpha Phi Omega is the best!!!

Up to this point in writing this entry I am still on a “hangover” and kept on pinching myself if this was all a dream. And I kept saying “ouch”. I guess this is not a dream after all.
