ACN A HOLD 1ST Q U AR TERL Y MEETING CNA QU ARTERL TERLY CELEBRA TE FOUNDER’S 100th BIR THD AY CELEBRATE BIRTHD THDA March 18-20, 2005 is the big event for APO Founder Bado Ureta at the Golden Sails Hotel in Long Beach, CA. The event will kick-off Friday, March 18, celebrating Bado’s 100th Birthday hosted by the LIU Foundation at the Golden Sails Restaurant from 6:00 PM -12MN. There will also be a gravesite service before the bash. On Saturday, March 19 - the 1st quarterly ACNA Meeting will be hosted APO South Bay which will be a whole day affair. The LIU Foundation will hold its own meeting during lunch break. The day will be punctuated by a Dinner-Dance affair from 6:00 PM 12:00 MN attended by APO brothers and sisters from all over North America and overseas. The night will highlight an “Ati-Atihan” presentation by GLA’s Dayut group to honor Bado being a native of Aklan. There will also be exhibits of Bado, souvenir t-shirts booth and a Worldwide Webcast for the event. On Sunday, March 20 - Going Away Pot Luck Brunch at the home of Bado at 2318 Atlantic Avenue. Mel Gonzales: I believe it was in September 1980 when the first alumni association in North America got together. Brod Bado was involved from day one, not only in the Philippines, but in Los Angeles as well. I understand Brod Bado was attending a Filipino-American meeting, and there he met brods. Brod Bado was there when, after a long spell of no ongoing relationship, APOUSA invited APO-Philippines to its December 1980 convention at the Marriott Hotel at the Los Angeles international airport. Brod Bado led the Philippine delegation and delighted the opening banquet participants when he stood on a chair and led the singing of “Sing, everyone, sing.” During the formative years of APO-AA-Southern California as well as APO-AANorthern California and APO-AA-San Diego County, Brod Bado was there, serving as an inspiration for old and new friends bonding together after college and beyond the Philippine borders. ACN A HOLD 1ST Q U AR TERL Y CNA QU ARTERL TERLY In September 1990, when APOACNA had its first meeting in Burlingame, California, Brod Bado was there, and he even inducted into office the ad hoc officers of the forming umbrella organization. Somehow, it was at that sports festival in Northern California when Brod Bado performed his final official role, as, soon after, he was taken ill. During the Christmas Ball weekend in southern California in 1990, Brod Bado was in the hospital. And, on January 22, 1991, Brod Bado died. Still, Brod Bado was there when hundreds of us from all over the United States came to Long Beach, paid our respects to Brod Bado, and saw his mortal remains interred. I remember Brother Earle Herbert, APO-USA past national president, giving a eulogy. I remember Brod Gil Magno giving an award to Brod Bobbitte Picazo for his sacrifices on behalf of Brod Bado. I remember

Brod Art Rivera giving a humor-tinged eulogy. I remember Brod Edmon and Marina Zamora giving the Ureta family certificates of masses to be said for Brod Bado. Yes, all that time, from the first day of APO in the Philippines and California until his last days, Brod Bado was there. But what should NOT go without notice is many of us were there, too. We were there, because Brod Bado was there. We were there, because Brod Bado, without asking, wanted us to be there. Because he was always with brods and sis. Because he always wanted to be with brods and sis. And because we wanted to be with Brod Bado, we were there. Always. Brods and Sis: Everything happens for a reason. There’s a reason why Brod Bado lived and died in Long Beach. There’s a reason why Brod Bado was in our midst his last few years alive (1977-1991). And the simple reason was he felt at home in Long
Beach. He was home in Long Beach. And it was because Long Beach was where his blood family lived and in and around which brods and sis lived. And, because his blood and APO family was there, we were there, Bado was home, he was home with us, and he was there with us. Now, for always and forever. Brods and Sis of APO-AA-GLA and brods and sis of all alumni associations in North America and within driving or flying distance of Long Beach: Once more, let us be there for Brod Bado. We know where his mortal remains are. In Long Beach. So, let us be in Long Beach this weekend of March 18-20, 2005. My wife Gracie and I are already at the Best Western Golden Sails Hotel, Room 108, Tel. No. 562 594-0623. Please come to Brod Bado’s birthday bash on Friday, his centennial banquet on Saturday, and the farewell potluck brunch at the Ureta home on Sunday. So long as you’ve contacted Brod Art, Sis Emma, or any member of the Brod Bado Ureta centennial committee and any officer or director of The Dr. Ureta Foundation, you’re confirmed and need not worry about the $10 after-the-deadline charge on top of the standard banquet donation of $50. Just come. We’d love to have you celebrate Brod Bado’s centennial weekend with us. And, a final thought. For the many of us who were already in the U.S. in 1980, it’s been 25 years since. It seems we’ve spent half of our lives in this adopted country of ours. Home is where our heart and hearth are, and I am sure you consider as home your neck of the California woods. After 14 years (1977-1991), I am sure Brod Bado had considered Long Beach his home. As his final resting place, it was in this city that he came home. Therefore, for all intents and purposes, he never left home. He never left us. Brod Bado had always been home. With us. Brod Bado’s centennial weekend is a homecoming of sorts. Come on down. APO MIDWEST-CHICAGO ALUMNI ASSOCIATION’S ACNA REPORT
voluntary donations to other APO members in need even if they are not members of APO Midwest-Chicago.
1st ACNA MEETING March 18-20, 2005 - Long Beach, CA
We also have expanded our Educational Fund. This program used to just provide monetary assistance to the APO Learning Center in Cainta, Rizal. We now also have a Scholarship program, the goal of which is to provide scholarship grants to orphans of APO members and other deserving children of APO. The revenues from our annual “Pasayaw” event are used to fund this Educational Fund. We also on occasion sponsor a Raffle in order to raise funds for this program. As is the case with other Alumni Associations, there are many APO members in the Chicgoland area who are not members of APO Midwest-Chicago. For some personal reason or another they do not want to become members and participate in our programs or activities. We are now developing a “reach-out” program, the object of which is to try and invite or entice these brothers and sisters to join the association and become active members of APO once again. Our plans include home visits, especially to those who are ill. Our “reach-out” program also extends to neighboring alumni associations, most especially the newly formed WindsorMichigan Alumni Association. We will try to support their programs and perhaps enjoy joint activities with them. In order continue to foster camaraderie among the members and to keep the members’ families involved, we will continue holding our annual picnics and camping events. We will also continue to celebrate our Fraternity/Sorority’s anniversary including Christmas with our families and friends in December of each year. We are also planning to go on family excursions in neighboring states, like Missouri, to see the sites or enjoy the shows in towns like Branson. Whenever any of you are in town, anywhere in the Chicagoland area, let us know and we will give you a taste of APO Midwest-Chicago hospitality!
As you know, APO Midwest-Chicago Alumni Association held its election of officers for the 2005-2006 term last July 2004. The new officers are now holding office. We will officially induct them into their respective positions during our Induction of Officers on April 2, 2005, to be held at the Penthouse of Ramada Inn, O’Hare. You are all welcome to attend this event. We guarantee you a “great time” in the Windy City. APO Midwest-Chicago Alumni Association’s new administration under the leadership of Bro. Manolo L. Comprado, Alpha’67, will implement new programs, but will ensure that the successful programs of the previous administrations continue in perpetuity or until the membership decides otherwise. We will continue our volunteer work in various community activities like “Hustle Up the Hancock sponsored by the American Lung Association,” “Shamrock Shuffle,” and LaSalle Bank’s the “Chicago Marathon.” We will also maintain the assistance we provide to both the Chicago Food Depository and the Northern Illinois Food Bank in DuPage County where we help clean, sort, and pack various food items for later distribution. These depositories are “Food Banks” that distribute donated foods to various food kitchens and shelters for the poor and homeless. As they say, charity begins at home. In order to provide assistance to our members who are in distress, we established an Emergency Fund. Monetary assistance is minimal, but every little bit helps, right? We supplement any donation given by the association with voluntary individual donations from members who wish to provide additional assistance. 1. Poster-Making Contest in coordination with the Filipino Cultural Heritage Society of Washington (FCHSW) as part of the yearlong celebration of Festal at the Seattle Center. Please refer to the attached Flyer regarding the event. 2. Participation in Pagdiriwang to commemorate Independence Day of the Philippines on June 11-12, 2005 at the Seattle Center. We will usher and present skits on stage. 3. Joint hosting with FCHSW of the visiting University of Santo Tomas Choral Ensemble from Manila in June. 4. Service projects to provide food for the homeless in Seattle during the summer months. 5. Award of scholarship grants to college bound students in some eight high schools in Seattle, Renton, Tukwila, Shoreline, Everett and Bellevue in cooperation with the Dollars for Scholars of America in July. 6. Phone answering service at KCTS Public TV in July. 7. Adopt-a-Park rehabilitation service project at Millersylvannia State Park in Tumwater in August. 8. Spelling and academic contest involving selected elementary and junior high schools in the Seattle area in October. 9. Providing winter clothing for the homeless in Seattle in November. 10. Caroling to spread joy and Christmas cheers at Senior Homes in Seattle and Renton in December.

Show some balls and raise your concerns directly to the person whom you have trouble understanding instead. But just like Brod Chato said in his earlier e-mail, once the Leadership is elected, the process doesn’t end there. The bigger challenge lies ahead - that is, are you just going to continue to bitch, moan, and whine while you are not actively participating in advancing worthwhile ideals? Or are you going to be a part of the solution? Sorry that this may sound like I’m attacking you. I am NOT! I just wish to remind you that you proclaimed yourself a professional, and I believe you’ve earned to be called one. You don’t get promoted to Senior Chief in the US of Navy for nothing. It would be cumbersome for every member to call up Brod President Cesar or Brod NP Rod to ask what’s going on. The president may end up spending an inordinate amount of time just answering calls. It is incumbent for the leadership to communicate with his constituents. The first thing I told my staff when we took over the NO was, “Kalimutan muna ninyo na nanalo na tayo sa eleksyon. Isipin ninyong unang araw pa lamang ito ng kampanya. Gusto kong bawat hakbang na gagawin at ginagawa natin ay napapaabot at napapaunawa natin sa mga brods. Gusto ko na bawat pumasok sa pintuan ay inyong naasikaso, ang bawat tawag ay nakakausap at ang bawat liham ay nasasagot. marami sa mga brods an nanggaling pa mula sa malalayong lugar at nag-bother sila na bumisita, tumawag o sumulat at tungkulin natin na harapin sila at sagutin ang pakay. Kung sasagutin naman ay gusto kong nakangiti kayo sapagkat diyan nagsisimula at matatapos ang kanilang pagkakakilala sa atin.” In the old days, the programs and projects of the nationl leadership is trickled down to the locals by the RDDs in their own regional meetings and by the GCs, GLCs and AA presidents in their own meetings. Ang problema ay kung hindi sumipot sa mga meetings ang RDD o ang mga GC,GLC, AA president at ang mga miyembro. Kaya mahalaga na dumadalo sa mga pulong ang mga dapat dumalo at ang paumunuan namn na magpatawag ng regular na pulong. Noon ay wala pang internet. Napakaganda ng teknolohiya na ito at dapat nating gamitin upang sa gayon ay mapaabiot natin ang ating mga programa at proyekto. ANOTHER SUGGESTION: Let’s have calendar of events from the international to the national to the regions all the way down to the chapters and AAs. Marami naman sa mga events ang pwedeng ilagay na agad at sa gayon ay mareremind ang mga miyembro kung ano ang magganap. Pweden isama na ang mga anniversaries, mga monthly,quarterly, semestral, annual and biennial meetings. chato **************************** With due respect to everyone, I think the issue of Brod Tony is that there appears to be precious little information for him to know what the programs are, hence he wants to emphasize that there is a communication problem. It is therefore not a solution for individuals to call the leader in order for the former to know the programs of the latter because the failure of communication remains. It is therefore incumbent upon the leaders to communicate as widely as possible with his constituents, and not for the individual to initiate the communication. Brod Chato, Try and help him and support the ideals he spoused? i don’t know what they are now and not even sure there were during the process by which he was running for president. were there ideals? if there were then and there are now, then let me hear them now even in the softest voice he could muster. he has not posted anything here on the net during the time he was running and even now that he is the president, as if he has the type of an imperial presidency that it doesn’t matter that we don’t know or know about him and the purpose of his presidency. its hard to support someone where we don’t know where he or she stands? should i be then present during the convention to understand why would he be the right fit for acna? i was absent during the convention, but never i heared anything from hi! m nor he dared to post something here on the net that would made me convince that he was the right choice. a stealth leader and certainly a disengaged one in a process by which he could be understood by and through many means, is a leader who in unwilling to tap many resources and therefore missing a lot of opportunities (these goes to every leader). how would we know that he has really “something good cooking” if he won’t use all the avenues available to him. not all brods and sis could attend the acna meetings and be abreast of his ideals and programs of governance. not all alumni presidents who attend the acna meetings keep their alumni group abreast and posted about acna. so how could we expect everyone in acna be in “the loop” of his ideals and program of governance? in retrospect, are we sure he won on ideals or on connivance of self serving interest -not for the greater good of the fraternity but to perhaps to punish brod jp for having stood on issues that somehow others were offended and does not believe in? brod jp has a polarizing record because of his transparency now and then, that somehow others could not just forget and forgive and thus see him as a much better choice. but they forgot to understand, that we are much better off with a leader we knew where he stands than those we don’t. i hate to be in the process of trying to unravel who he is and what he stands for? what does brod cezar stands for, i may ask? if we know, perhaps i am just “sour graping” and blunderously shaming him. if i am, then i am deeply sorry and regretfull. and if i am not, then consided this as my service to the frat and a wake up call for him to do better because by appearances, he is not “squeaky good.” but i do understand that appearances is deceiving and by the end of his tenure he may have been the best acna ! president we ever had, which i hope he will be. i thought brod jp was the right fit because there were ideals and programs of governance he enunciated here on the net and the transparency that he has always projected. i guess to many, presidency is never won on ideals but on many conniving variables. if brod cezar is reading this , i suggest that he takes this as a constructed criticism that somehow the shortcomings that i thought he has could be rectified as this early in his administration. i just can’t sit idly and not do this first salvo on my characterization on what it meant to me to be a dynamic and engage president. seldom is a stealth leader is dynamic and engage. and i don’t see him as engage on all fronts and using all the resources available to him. nevertheless brod chato, i concur with all you said and the wisdom you just shared and always share. brod tony alpha eta ’71

My Dear Brothers & Sisters, March 18 is 6 days away and we will have our Dr. Librado Ureta Centennial bash in Long Beach, CA and the first ACNA meeting, I would like to remind everyone to consider donating money, medicines, or in kind for our humanitarian mission in the Philippines. I will bring my van & will collect & gather all your relief goods, monetary donations will be given to Bro. Bong Manuel, our National treasurer. I will consolidate all your goods & relief clothes in regulation boxes, 20x20x20. Remember our cut-off date for shipping schedule is April 10, 2005. We need at least more than 30 days for cargo shipping

There are 17 chapters under the mother umbrella of ACNA, please consider donating to ACNA, this is our project & I expect every chapter to give what they can afford. Right now we only have 10 donors & we need money, the approximate budget for this Intenational project will run from $3000 dollars & up. We need the help of all chapters to give in, we will encourage every chapter to give at least $ 200.00 dollars each so we will be sufficient. Action speak louder than words, this project is held every biennial convention or every two years. Don’t let us down on this humanitarian mission, this is yours, its everyone obligation to help.
