A Fee Assistance Program, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Foundation of San Carlos, may be available to help San Carlos residents participate in San Carlos Parks & Recreation classes and programs. Utility Box Mural Project Update

This past January, the Utility Box Mural Program was presented to City Council as part of the City’s Public Art Master Plan. The project and funding were approved by City Council. Parks & Recreation opened the “Call for Local Artists” in mid-May. Thirty-nine artists submitted artwork proposals, some with multiple designs. The Public Art Task Force (consisting of a City Council member, two Parks, Recreation and Culture Commissioners, a resident and staff member) met and reviewed all artwork proposals. Out of over 50 artwork submissions, the committee recommended the top 19 pieces for the utility boxes. When making the selections, the Task Force took into consideration the artistic excellence, innovation and originality of each piece. The Task Force also considered the following criteria:

n Does the art meet the goals of the project?

n Does the art transform the area?

n Does the art relate to the area where the utility box is located?

n Does the art show the City’s unique characteristics, historic heritage, or a key activity?

Selected artists began painting boxes in September and wrapped up in November. As part of the project, the City has applied an anti-graffiti coating to all boxes to prevent graffiti and fading of the art.

Mo Music is excited to offer nationally acclaimed Music Together, a parent-child music and movement program. During class, you will sing, dance, and play instruments to songs. Your preschooler will sing and dance to musical theatre favorites as well as learn the fundamentals of proper voice and dance techniques. Young Rembrandts Workshop (Ages

This Young Rembrandts Art class will focus on art history. Each class, we will create a large, original pastel drawing replicating a famous artists masterpiece. We’ll draw a colorful goldfish bowl as Henri Matisse did in his Goldfish painting. On day two, we will recreate Vincent Van Gogh’s famous Starry Night complete with swirls throughout the sky. On day three, we will create powerful still life full of robust color as Paul Cezanne did often in his paintings. Day four will find us drawing Andre Derain’s Portrait of Matisse. We will draw as Thiebald did for his Cake Paintings. Each day will challenge us with the pastel media. But in the end we will be Masters ourselves. You will want the drawings framed! No experience necessary. Wear an old shirt and a smock will be provided.

Colorful Critters is a fun camp ﬁlled with many of Robin’s wonderful live animals such as Indigo the peacock, a passle of funky chickens, rabbits both tiny and giant as well as many others. We will learn about why animals display color, some muted like that of Shelly the tortoise and some vibrant like Indigo the peacock. We will do eight different science projects and experiments to examine how color helps these animals in their natural environment. We will also get to interact with and touch these animals. NFL Flag Football League (Ages 7-14 yrs)

The San Carlos Parks and Recreation Department is offering another season of the NFL-endorsed Youth Coed Flag Football program. Imagine the excitement of football in a fast-paced, no-contact format. NFL Flag Football is played with a 5 on 5 player format. League games are 40 minutes with a 5 minute halftime break. Standard leagues include 8 games plus playoffs. Action is fast and fun on a small field 70 x 30 yards. Skill development includes running, passing, catching, field position and teamwork - all the fun with less risk of serious injury than standard tackle football. Boys and girls of all skill levels are welcome. Practices and games are all on Fridays. Age brackets are 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, players are welcome to play up a division, but not down. Youngest play earliest at 5:30pm and games continue throughout the evening for each subsequent age group subject to field availability. Volunteer Coaches necessary for the success of the program. What is the YAC?

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is an all volunteer advisory council to the San Carlos City Council comprised of Middle School and High School Teens.

What types of projects do they do?

The YAC strengthens the image of community for our young people in San Carlos. We promote health and wellness in conducting workshops on teen issues and advise the City Council on youth related programs. We foster human development by offering activities and events suggested by youth, for youth. The YAC does volunteer work throughout the community. The YAC helped fundraise and build the San Carlos Youth Center and continue to recommend ideas for ongoing programs and operations. Meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, 7:00-8:30pm at the San Carlos Youth Center, 1001 Chestnut Street, San Carlos.

Enjoy top-flight instruction from the staff of Stanford Hall of Famer John Whitlinger and Stanford/USPTA Pro Tom Sarsfield. Classes of 3-8 students will consist of 6-hours of instruction. Classes of two students will be converted into four lessons. Students provide their own rackets. Important: In case of rain, call (650) 802-4382 within the hour before the scheduled start time for class status or check with the instructor at the court. If at any time the instructor is absent, report to the next scheduled lesson for make-up date. No postponement announcement will be initiated by the instructor or department. This is the perfect class for the true beginner or for anyone not ready to dive into cutting glass just yet. In this fun and easy beginner workshop, you’ll create your own trivet or picture frame using beautiful pre-cut sparkling art glass, mirrored tiles, glitter tiles and much more. The first evening you’ll create your mosaic design and glue your design onto your frame. On the second evening, those who have finished gluing will grout their pieces after a grouting demo. Intro

to Glass Mosaics (Ages 16 yrs +)

This class is for beginners and those with a little experience working with glass cutting. Full of brilliant color, and beautiful, reflective materials, glass mosaics are irresistible and in this class, you’ll learn how to create your own glass mosaic artwork! We’ll cover techniques, materials, tools, design, and the types of glass and other items you can use in a variety of applications. Learn to score, cut, and shape glass safely with specialized glass tools. Students create their own glass mosaic on the first and second day of class, and are guided through grouting their artwork on the third day. If you don’t finish your project during the class, no problem, we’ll send you home with a grout kit and you can complete it at home. After this class, you’ll be able to apply your skills to even bigger projects around your home and yard. BEGINNING: In this class your dog is taught sit, down, stay, come, heel and easy (walking nicely at the end of the leash without pulling). The dog is taught to move freely and easily with the collar, so one day you barely have to use it. The dog is also taught to perform things and to willingly do or not do things, not just be prevented from doing them. Verbal and/or physical praise from owner is given which builds a relationship between owner and dog. Any speciﬁc problems you are having will be addressed and cured in class or by a lifestyle change at home. INTERMEDIATE: This class will instruct students in off-leash control. This is done with the addition of a 30 foot long line. You will need a 6 foot leather leash for both classes. Community Emergency Response Training (CERT)

Come join us for this interactive and informative class and learn how to take better care of yourself, your family and neighbors when a disaster does happen. Floods, wildfires, mudslides, earthquake, airline crash, terrorism, disasters come in all forms and severity, are unpredictable and cause disruptions to emergency services. During the C.E.R.T. course, students will receive training in emergency preparedness, fire suppression, medical operations, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, team organization and terrorism. Upon full course completion students will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Bring your binoculars, telescopes, star guides, and lounge chairs for some informal star gazing at Crestview Park in San Carlos. See how many different things you can identify in the night sky! Arrive before dark; please park on Crestview Drive. Bring small ﬂashlights only with red lens. Dress warmly and wear a hat. All ages. No registration or fee required. Senior Exercise: Sit & Be Fit

Senior exercise is an important part of the health and wellness of seniors. It helps increase your metabolism, energy levels and alertness. Research shows that those suffering from chronic illness benefit from exercise even if it is done while sitting in a chair. Chair exercises are great for older adults, those with disabilities, poor balance or anyone who has trouble standing or getting on the floor to do exercises. They are always gentle on the body and generally safe for most people to do. It is always a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning a new exercise program, but you are not likely to injure yourself doing any of these exercises. Bring a 5 lb. dumbbell weight with you to the first class. Be sure to wear loose clothing and comfortable, supportive shoes. No cost.

FISH Friends in Service to Humanity

FISH is a volunteer-based transportation service to medical appointments sponsored by the Presbyterian Church. Call (650) 593-1288 at least 24 hours ahead of day needed.

Lyft Concierge — San Carlos Adult Community Center (ACC) in partnership with Sequoia Healthcare District and hosted by PVI Little House, is pleased to offer this cost-effective ride option. If you need a ride to or from your home in San Carlos to the ACC, call our direct transportation hotline number at (650) 272-5040. A Lyft driver will come to your house within a few minutes and bring you to the ACC. When you are finished enjoying your visit at the ACC, Lyft will get you a safe ride back home. The cost of each ride is $4 flat. Registration is required to be a part of this service and you can do so in person at the ACC or call (650) 2725040.

The San Carlos Adult Community Center is a unique and charming place for meetings and events and is conveniently located for easy access from both Highway 101 and 280. The recently renovated facility features new floors, bay windows with a view of our beautifully landscaped grounds, an outdoor patio area with teakwood furniture, fire pit and gas BBQ, and a commercial kitchen. Available amenities include 6-foot banquet tables, 60-inch round dining tables, banquet chairs and a baby grand piano. The facility may be reserved for private functions up to one year in advance. The San Carlos Youth Center is nestled in the heart of lovely Burton Park. The facility offers a full size gym, dance studio and a meeting room for youth related events.
