Department Services Fee Assistance Program A Fee Assistance Program, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Foundation of San Carlos, may be available to help San Carlos residents participate in San Carlos Parks & Recreation classes and programs. The San Carlos Recreation Department combines Recreation Fun with Learning Fun to give your child a well-rounded social experience in a small group setting. Our outstanding staff of caring, dedicated, enthusiastic professionals provides a warm environment in which to play, grow and learn. The program is designed to encourage exploration and creativity in a fun, stimulating atmosphere through art, music, social play, crafts, storytelling, movement, outdoor play, special events and holiday programs. Payments are due quarterly or in three installments per session. Call the Recreation Office for more information.

Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten (Ages 3-5 yrs) Through play and group activities your child will learn colors, numbers, counting, the alphabet, pre-reading and language arts.

Your child will also learn decision making and problem solving skills, enhancing his/her own self-esteem and independence. Our handson curriculum will help prepare your child for Kindergarten and the ongoing, life-long learning process. Preschool Drawing (Ages 3½-5 yrs) This Fall season, Young Rembrandts introduces drawing lessons that will excite your preschool artist. Learning to draw basic shapes is an essential building block for every illustrator. Our ladybug and gumball machine drawings provide excellent practice for drawing circle shapes. From there, our lessons become progressively more challenging. Our clown puppet and Frankenstein monster are great introductions to character drawing. Other drawings like our candy bag illustration and fall scene will help strengthen your child’s compositional skills. All materials included in fee.

Mo Music – Music Together (Ages Infant-4 yrs) Mo Music is excited to offer nationally acclaimed Music Together, a parent-child music and movement program. The San Carlos/Belmont Parents’ Club is a terrific resource for parents and children (birth10 years). We also have a highly successful classified forum and general forum for those questions that come up while parenting! NFL Flag Football League (Ages 7-14 yrs)

The San Carlos Parks and Recreation Department is offering another season of the NFL-endorsed Youth Coed Flag Football program.

Imagine the excitement of football in a fast-paced, no-contact format. NFL Flag Football is played with a 5 on 5 player format.

League games are 40 minutes with a 5 minute half-time break.

Standard leagues include 8 games plus playoffs. Action is fast and fun on a small field 70 x 30 yards. Skill development includes running, passing, catching, field position and teamwork - all the fun with less risk of serious injury than standard tackle football. Boys and girls of all skill levels are welcome. Practices and games are all on Fridays. Age brackets are 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, players are welcome to play up a division, but not down. Youngest play earliest at 5:30pm and games continue throughout the evening for each subsequent age group subject to field availability. NFL reversible team jersey is provided. Games will be played on Friday evenings.

Skyhawks Speedsters – Winter Conditioning (Ages 8-12 yrs) Does your child love to run? You don’t have to wait for the spring track season! Get going during winter with the Skyhawks Speedsters Running Club! Coaches Colleen, Tricia and Anton will engage kids in running games and workouts that encourage emotional, social, and physical development. We’ll work on improving running form, strength and general fitness. The program will cover important aspects of running including pacing and speed as well as emphasizing agility and strength. San Carlos K-6th Grade Recreation Basketball EVERYONE PLAYS! Recreation Basketball is a fun, low-pressure way to learn and enjoy the game of basketball. Equal playing time for all! K/1st grade league is co-ed; 2nd/3rd, and 4th/5th/6th leagues are single gender. Practices are held for one hour before games. Players provide their own ball for practices.

Games are played on Saturdays (8-game schedule to be determined). T-shirt uniforms are provided for all participants at the first game. Volunteer coaches are necessary for the success of the program. Coach training is highly recommended.

Youth Advisory Council What is the YAC?

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is an all volunteer advisory council to the San Carlos City Council comprised of Middle School and High School Teens.

What types of projects do they do?

The YAC strengthens the image of community for our young people in San Carlos. We promote health and wellness in conducting workshops on teen issues and advise the City Council on youth related programs. We foster human development by offering activities and events suggested by youth, for youth. The YAC does volunteer work throughout the community. The YAC helped fundraise and build the San Carlos Youth Center and continue to recommend ideas for ongoing programs and operations.

Standing Pilates/Tye4 (Ages 18+ yrs) Standing Pilates takes you off your mat and onto your feet. There are over 75 different exercises to build strength, balance, flexibility and coordination skills. Bring your binoculars, telescopes, star guides, and lounge chairs for some informal star gazing at Crestview Park in San Carlos. See how many different things you can identify in the night sky!

Arrive before dark; please park on Crestview Drive. Bring small flashlights only with red lens. Dress warmly and wear a hat. All ages. No registration or fee required. This is a popular spot for amateur astronomers so there could be telescopes. Caution!

Beginning: In this class your dog is taught sit, down, stay, come, heel and easy (walking nicely at the end of the leash without pulling). The dog is taught to move freely and easily with the collar, so one day you barely have to use it. The dog is also taught to perform things and to willingly do or not do things, not just be prevented from doing them. Verbal and/or physical praise from owner is given which builds a relationship between owner and dog. AARP Tax-Aide Foundation Free Tax Preparation Free tax preparation assistance will be available for low and moderate income tax payers, with special attention to those aged 60 and older on Thursdays starting February through April 14, 2016 from 9:00am-4:00pm (closed between 12:00noon and 1:00pm).

Appointments can be made by calling (650) 802- 4384 starting in January. Please bring a current picture ID, last year’s tax return, along with all 2015 income documents such as W-2’s, Social Security benefits, and all 1099 and 1095 forms. Senior exercise is an important part of the health and wellness of seniors. It helps increase your metabolism, energy levels and alertness. Research shows that those suffering from chronic illness benefit from exercise even if it is done while sitting in a chair. Chair exercises are great for older adults, those with disabilities, poor balance or anyone who has trouble standing or getting on the floor to do exercises. They are always gentle on the body and generally safe for most people to do. It is always a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning a new exercise program, but you are not likely to injure yourself doing any of these exercises.

Bring a 5 lb. dumbbell weight with you to the first class. Be sure to wear loose clothing and comfortable, supportive shoes. No cost.
