The San Carlos Youth Center opened its doors to the community in September, 1999. While the City of San Carlos and the Parks and Recreation Department maintain authority over the San Carlos Youth Center programs and staffing, The San Carlos Youth Center Foundation and their Board of Directors continues to raise and distribute funds used to maintain and improve the facility, as well as supplement cost, programs and scholarships not covered by the city.

Senior Fencing is an interesting way to exercise for seniors. The movements, agility training, and non-traumatic contact is perfect for seniors, even those with light-to-moderate disabilities like arthritis or joint replacements. People need variety to help make their exercise a life-long endeavor and fencing is a great addition to the mix.

Exercise is an important part of the health and wellness of seniors. It helps increase your metabolism, energy levels, and alertness. Research shows that those suffering from chronic illness benefit from exercise even if it is done while sitting in a chair. Chair exercises are great for older adults, those with disabilities, poor balance, or anyone who has trouble standing or getting on the floor to do exercises. They are always gentle on the body and generally safe for most people to do. It is always a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning a new exercise program, but you are not likely to injure yourself doing any of these exercises. Be sure to wear loose clothing and comfortable, supportive shoes.

It’s important that your blood pressure be within a healthy range. While high blood pressure rarely has symptoms, the good news is that it can be diagnosed using a simple test with a blood pressure monitor. The Adult Community Center offers free blood pressure screenings on the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., provided by Sequoia Hospital.

The theme of this year’s Active Aging Week is “Redefining Active” because active aging is about so much more than just exercise. It’s about broader engagement - physically, socially, cognitively, spiritually, and professionally. Active aging is about engaging with family, friends and/or community, learning and trying new things, volunteering, mentoring, pursuing further professional development or entrepreneurial endeavors, traveling, maintaining an active spiritual/religious life, and leading a healthy lifestyle with good nutrition, exercise, mindfulness and other forms of stress-management. Simply put, active aging is about staying positively engaged in all aspects of life - which ultimately benefits both the individual and broader society. Get involved in this year’s Active Aging Week and participate in one or more of the following:
• Fitness Class Demos
• H ealth Lectures
• 5K Walk
• H ealthy Meals
• Fencing
• Archery
