Consider Having a Block Party!

A block party is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbors in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Block parties are permitted through the Parks & Recreation department at 600 Elm Street. Staff will work with residents in advance of your event date to address any potential challenges to help ensure a successful event. (Not all streets in San Carlos are conducive to block parties.)

The San Carlos Recreation Department combines Recreation Fun with Learning Fun to give your child a well-rounded social experience in a small group setting. Our outstanding staff of caring, dedicated, enthusiastic professionals provides a warm environment in which to play, grow and learn. The program is designed to encourage exploration and creativity in a fun, stimulating atmosphere through art, music, social play, crafts, storytelling, movement, outdoor play, special events and holiday programs.

Payments are due quarterly or in three installments per session. Call the Recreation Office for more information.

Bright Beginnings Preschool (Ages 3-4 yrs) Through play, we learn colors, shapes, eye-hand coordination and motor skills. We introduce and emphasize counting, numbers and the alphabet as part of the pre-school learning curriculum. Preschool Drawing (Ages 3½-5 yrs) Has your preschooler expressed an interest in drawing? If so, he will love Young Rembrandts drawing classes. Learning to draw basic shapes is a critical building block for every young artist. Our lessons will strengthen our students’ core drawing skills as we introduce them to wonderful seasonal imagery. Lessons like acorns, fall leaves, and an apple tree will build into their skills and creativity. Playful characters will be our focus as we draw a clown, a scarecrow, and an imaginary monster inspired by a classic children’s story. Princess Pre-Ballet (Ages 3-5 yrs)

Ballet & Tap (Ages 3-5 yrs) Tippy Toe Turns, Alligator Walks, and Magic Garden Dances! This is a great class which introduces your child to ballet and tap. They will learn ballet steps, tap combinations, use props, and understand dance terminology, while dancing to fun music! All dancers will do an in class performance on the last day of the session. Monthly meetings, newsletters, playgroups, family events, special interest groups, children’s outings, socials, “in a pinch” assistance, and a babysitting co-op are offered.

Ana Fitzgerald School of Ballet Our dance curriculum introduces children to the joy of dance, fosters their creativity, and builds an excellent foundation for continuing ballet and dance classes. Creative Dance focuses on fun, coordination, motor skill development, musical awareness, and listening skills – all while acquiring a sense of accomplishment. Pre-Ballet students will begin a more formal study of classical ballet, age appropriate skill development, music appreciation, barre and ballet vocabulary which will prepare them for future classes. San Carlos K-6th Grade Recreational Basketball (Grades Kindergarten-6th) EVERYONE PLAYS! Recreation Basketball is a fun, low-pressure way to learn and enjoy the game of basketball. Equal playing time for all! K/1st grade league is co-ed; 2nd/3rd, and 4th/5th/6th leagues are single gender. Practices are held for 1 hour before games. Players provide their own ball for practices. One of our most popular programs, Skyhawks Golf focuses on building the confidence of young athletes through proper technique and refining the essential skills of the game. This multi-sport program was developed to give young children ages 4 to 7 a positive first step into athletics. The essentials of baseball and soccer are taught in a safe, structured environment with lots of encouragement and a big focus on fun.

Our Mini-hawk games and activities were designed to allow athletes to explore balance, movement, hand/eye coordination and skill development at their own pace.

Skyhawks coaches are trained to handle the specific needs of these young athletes. The participant-tocoach ratio is approximately 8:1.

Babysitting Workshop (Ages 12-17 yrs) Do you love kids and need a job? Become an excellent babysitter!

Learn first aid and emergency procedures, games and activities, nutrition, home security, fire and earthquake safety, edible art, crafts, job search info, and infant care to enhance your babysitting skills. Students must be on time, stay for the entire class, do the homework, and attend all three classes to receive a certificate.

Youth Advisory Council What is the YAC? The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is an all volunteer advisory council to the San Carlos City Council comprised of Middle School and High School Teens.

What types of projects do they do?

Youth Center

The YAC strengthens the image of community for our young people in San Carlos. We promote health and wellness in conducting workshops on teen issues and advise the City Council on youth related programs. We foster human development by offering activities and events suggested by youth, for youth. The YAC does volunteer work throughout the community. The YAC helped fundraise and build the San Carlos Youth Center and continue to recommend ideas for ongoing programs and operations.

Meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, 7:00-8:30pm at the San Carlos Youth Center, 1001 Chestnut Street, San Carlos.

Come experience the rejuvenating effect of walking, stretching, and breathing along the paths of San Carlos’s beautiful parks. Yoga Walks offer an opportunity to practice yoga outside, in combination with an energetic walk in a natural setting. Ninety-minute classes include about 45 minutes of yoga poses interspersed with about 45 minutes of walking in 10-15 minute intervals. No yoga experience necessary. Tribal Belly Dance (Ages 18+ yrs) A modern twist on a centuries-old women’s tradition, Tribal Belly Dance is a joyful and empowering interpretation of belly dance that allows dancers to improvise with each other while interpreting beautiful music. The beginning class will focus on strength, posture, stretching, technique, steps, and cues to follow your fellow dancers.

The intermediate class is for students who have taken the beginning class and it will add advanced steps, turns and formations. Finger cymbals (available for purchase) are required for last class. Standing Pilates/Tye4 (Ages 18+ yrs) Standing Pilates takes you off your mat and onto your feet. There are over 75 different exercises to build strength, balance, flexibility and coordination skills. This was developed to teach correct alignment in functional positions, as well as, weight bearing exercises for bone strength, promoting well-being of the pelvic floor, core awareness and focus of the brain. The Tye4 is a wearable bungee/harness which provides assistance and/or challenge in the exercises. Dog Obedience (Ages 18+ yrs) Beginning: In this class your dog is taught sit, down, stay, come, heel and easy (walking nicely at the end of the leash without pulling). The dog is taught to move freely and easily with the collar, so one day you barely have to use it. The dog is also taught to perform things and to willingly do or not do things, not just be prevented from doing them. Verbal and/or physical praise from owner is given which builds a relationship between owner and dog.

Café Parkview Lunch Program Café Parkview is a great place to bring your friends and family. We invite you to join us every Monday for a nutritious noon time meal.

Our meals are prepared on site by Steve Gurka, Chef, and we offer a hot entrée as well as soup and sandwiches.

You can pick up our monthly Monday menu at the ACC or call us at (650) 802-4384 to hear the menu of the day.

“Breakfast Special” Join us at the San Carlos Adult Community Center on the 4th Friday of every month from 9:30-11:30am for a delicious breakfast prepared on site. Advance ticket purchase is required.

Food Assistance Program

Lunch is served every Monday at 11:15am until 12:30pm. No reservations are required for the Monday lunch. Pick up an order form, mark your luncheon choices and take your completed form to the cashier. Your server will bring your lunch to your table. No more waiting in line! Plan to stay after lunch and play Bingo which starts at 1:00pm. You will have plenty of fun and excitement playing the game. It gives you a chance to socialize with others and have a great time.

Caring Cupboard Food Program Is your food budget not stretching far enough?

You may be eligible for “free” groceries twice a month. Call Anna Kertel at (650) 802-4384 for a confidential appointment.

Donations of canned food, boxed food or packages that are non-perishable and in their factory-sealed condition are welcome.

The ACC also offers a sit down luncheon with entertainment on the second Friday of every month. Tickets for the Friday lunch must be purchased in advance at the ACC Front Desk. We also serve “Breakfast Special” on the 4th Friday of the month. Advance ticket purchase is required.

You’re sure to find our facility warm, inviting, friendly and a great place to enjoy a delicious meal with friends, both new and old. Our staff and dedicated group of volunteers are waiting to serve you!

by Bev Childs and Helen Epstein. There’s no charge and no experience necessary. Please note: On the first Monday of every month this class will be held in the ACC Library on the 1st Floor.

Senior exercise is an important part of the health and wellness of seniors. It helps increase your metabolism, energy levels and alertness. Research shows that those suffering from chronic illness benefit from exercise even if it is done while sitting in a chair. Chair exercises are great for older adults, those with disabilities, poor balance or anyone who has trouble standing or getting on the floor to do exercises. They are always gentle on the body and generally safe for most people to do. It is always a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning a new exercise program, but you are not likely to injure yourself doing any of these exercises. Bring a 5 lb. dumbbell weight with you to the first class. Be sure to wear loose clothing and comfortable, supportive shoes.
