A

s many of you know by now, we had a fun, successful, COVID-free summer in 2021. We did have to make some changes to our program, create cohorts, wear masks in a few indoor places and do a lot of testing. But it was all worth it! Campers and staff were all smiles while climbing mountains, riding horses, hiking, backpacking, and tubing on the river. They renewed old friendships, made new friends, sang around the campfire, and embraced life in the natural world. They needed it—we all needed it.

We are now in the middle of our fall school-weeks season. The High Trails Outdoor Education Center program had to be put on hold for all of 2020 and the spring of 2021, so we were especially excited to welcome students, teachers, and high school-aged counselors back in September. As I write this, our outstanding school weeks staff members are out in the woods teaching earth science through the Prospectors Discovery Group, local history through Homesteaders, and forest ecology through Woodsmen. We are extremely grateful to Academy School District 20 for their continued enthusiasm for the program.

None of this would be possible without the remarkable support you, our alums, have provided over the past two years. Your kind words and thoughtful notes buoyed us up during the darkest days and your generous donations had a significant impact on our survival through a year without revenue. As usual, more than a third of our current campers are the children or grandchildren of alums.

Some of you even made the trip to camp to help us in our wildfire mitigation efforts by spending the day hauling dead branches. You made it possible for us to survive and return to thriving and we can’t thank-you enough.

Thank-you to Rob Taylor for again contributing to the Alum News—we love the contributions from our readers and are considering increasing the pay from 0 to 3 chits for each article submitted. You can find Rob’s thoughtful essay on Sunday Rocks in this edition.

As usual in the fall edition of the Alum News, we don’t have a lot of news. You need to do better on this! Please send us your updates before our big newsy spring edition—or we will be forced to make stuff up. We’re also a little depressed by the scarcity of new babies reported in Vital Statistics—it is not looking good for camp in 2031!

The Quick Homestead Dear Alums,

the south-facing wall. The insides of the walls and ceiling were insulated with layers of newspaper. Arlo’s father decided that his mother would like living there better if he could replace the massive black, smoky fireplace with a large window . . . but it didn’t work. Later a room of much lower quality construction was added on the east side of the cabin.

In 1969 Sandy and Laura purchased a 500-acre homestead southeast of High Trails from the family of John Quick.

Even though we call it the Quick Homestead, it was actually homesteaded back in the 1890s by Daniel Bell. Records from the US Government included witness signatures by Hannah, William, and Silas Allen and the Dodge Family who had earlier acquired the land that is now Big Spring and High Trails. (Do you remember Sandy’s Sy Allen stories?)

The tool shed was an important part of a small self-sufficient farm. We found a variety of tools spanning many years and used for many tasks – a stone sharpening wheel powered by bicycle-style pedals, woodworking tools, a potato sorter, field and garden tools, a saw for cutting ice on a lake, small engines – quite an assortment.

The little farm contains a well-built log cabin, a tool shed, potato cellar, barn, sod-roofed chicken house, and an outhouse in a beautiful valley that flows into the High Trails Lake.

The cellar was another essential part of the homestead. Dug into the hillside and well covered with dirt, the cellar was important for keeping perishable food cool during the summer – and kept it from freezing in the winter. There were shelves along the wall for storing home-canned vegetables, fruit, sauerkraut, venison, etc. There were bins for storing potatoes they grew, traded, and sold ($1 for a hundredpound sack,) root crops from the garden, apples they brought from Canon City, and a place to hang a deer carcass when they were lucky enough to get one. In recent years the roof was caving in, and Jim Larsen and his crew restored the cellar 4-5 years ago.

A visit with Arlo George in the late 80s gave us much of the knowledge we have about the buildings and the family’s way of life. Arlo lived there with his parents in the late 40s for a few years. When his parents moved back to the Eastern Plains, Arlo was 19 years old and lived in the cabin with his wife and first child for a short time.

There are two places they kept chickens (a very important source of fresh meat and eggs) – a shed with nesting boxes, feeders, waterers, and roosting bars and a crude log building with a sod roof that was so dilapidated that Sandy removed it. Arlo’s dad usually bought 100 chickens each spring – 50 roosters and 50 hens – the hens laid eggs all summer and the family ate the roosters. Behind this shed were rabbit hutches, another source of rapidly reproducing fresh meat.

cause they had brought it when they moved here. There is a windmill at Tie Cabin, and we are working on transplanting it to the Quick Homestead to restore part of its history.

Through the years we have worked to maintain and restore various features of the site – the chinking between the logs of the cabin, roofs on the cabin and tool shed, fences that were burned, and deteriorating foundations. One winter heavy snows caused part of the roof of the barn to collapse. It would have been a massive job to rebuild that much of the barn, but the maintenance crew stabilized the walls and used rough cut wood from the sawmill to restore the front half of the building.

The largest building is a huge barn which may have been built by Arlo and his father. It has stanchions for milking 6-8 cows, very wide stalls for work horses, and places to raise a couple of pigs to butcher each year and to shelter calves when they were first born. Over half the space was to store hay harvested every fall. The barn was built into the hillside so that hay wagons could pull up on the back side, and hay could be thrown on the stack inside without lifting it from below.

Summer campers love to visit, play vintage games, and learn about pioneer life.

HTOEC students become Homesteaders in the role-playing experiences of the outdoor education program. Adults at TNP and SWC reunions enjoy discovering some relic their grandmother had and contemplating a life of very hard work, but of a simpler time. The Quick Homestead is a truly unique asset to the mission and educational program of SWC/COEC.

The family had two sources of water. There was a spring on the south side of the cabin, and they built an 8 x 8-foot building over the spring to keep food cool and to keep the water clean. Near the spring was a windmill. Arlo’s father, a water witcher, walked the area with his forked stick, stopped at this site, and said they would find two streams coming together less than 10 feet underground – and they did! When they sold the place, they took the windmill with them – be-

KEITH WILLIAMS (BS 64-67, 69; Staff 70-77) found time for more Baseball With Friends when he and GARY MISSNER (BS 70-75; Staff 76-78) attended a Cubs game last June with daughter, LINDSEY WILLIAMS (HT 92-95) and her now-fiance AJ. During their May trip to Colorado, Lindsay had planned to show AJ where she went to camp during her summers.

(Keith never minds finding reasons to come to camp either.) Keith suggested a hike to Top of The World.

Two of their close friends and Keith set out and, when they reached the top, AJ dropped on one knee and proposed to her. She said yes!

DEBBIE DE PEYSTER (HT 64-68; Staff 69, 74) reported that during the COVID pandemic she and husband, James Morris, stayed sane by climbing all forty-eight 4,000 foot peaks in New Hampshire.

BART BERGER (BS 60-65; Staff 66) and his girlfriend/ partner have been holding a five day “camp” for their four granddaughters at his family place near Bailey.

No parents are allowed! “This year we did archery, art projects, hiking, butterfly chasing, S’mores cooking, swimming, dog petting, running, laughing, giggling, more giggling, gun safety, ghost stories and a duck race down the Platte River- among a few dozen other things. We call it ‘Camp Run-A-Mok.’ The ages were 12/9/8 and 6. It was fantastic, and we expect it to be a permanent feature of their summers from now on.”

PHIL PRINGLE (BS 64-69; Staff 70) sold his store, Pringle’s Fine Wine and Spirits, in Fort Collins, CO. After 39 years at Pringle’s and eight previous years in Colorado retail and Northern California wholesale, he and wife, Barbara, decided “the time has come to start enjoying our wine cellar, spending more time in our gardens, travel, and do some serious fly fishing.”

MITCH SMOLLER (BS Staff 79-81) navigated northeast hills, Midwest farmlands, Kansas heat, and the Rockies in a successful solo, self -contained bike ride, coast to coast. He departed Ogunquit Beach on the Maine Coast at the end of June and arrived in Washington state in mid-September. Along the way, he met up with JERRY McLAIN in Florissant!

Rob, have 4 sons—Charlie, Jack, Andy, and Pete, all of whom have been Big Spring campers.

MEGAN MUELLER (HT 76-79; Staff 82-83, 85-86) Barry and HEATHER MUELLER (HT 79-83; Staff 85-86) Klonsinski stopped by camp last summer for a visit with Jane and it was wonderful to catch up. Megan lives in Nashville, TN, with husband, Bruce Barry; Heather lives in Belgrade, MT, with husband, KURT KLONSINSKI (BS Staff 85) SHERI BONE (HT Staff 80-82; TNP Staff 07) Fedorchak and husband, Rich are both retired! Rich retired in June 2020 and had a whole year to practice being retired before I retired this summer, at the end of July. “I loved my job, all 31 years of it with the NPS. Eight national parks, many cool experiences and a feeling of satisfaction for things accomplished on interdisciplinary teams. Upon retirement, I headed outdoors to do a task that doesn't require much thinking but gives me a feeling of accomplishment. I have taken to pulling weeds and bagging them, then dropping them off at a "salvage yard," where they get burned.” The Fedorchaks plan to continue to live in Estes Park for the time being, but enjoyed trips to New England, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming over the past few months.

Jen has been living in Germany for many years and was back in Colorado visiting family, and we are so glad she made the trip to camp. Jen has two children—Kimberly, 21, and Cameron, 18.

Using clever, crafty skills cultivated during years of epic pranks and moonlight bareback rides to woo High Trails staff members, a group of well-organized (thanks TOM WEBER) former Big Spring staff and family members gathered together in Eagle, CO this August to surprise Duncan Clarke and celebrate his 70th birthday. The birthday celebration included good food, great stories, golfing, horseback riding, and apparently a little whiskey. They are living in the Boston area where Mike is a student at Harvard and Sarah is studying at Boston University. We are grateful for their many contributions over the past six years and know they will be back to visit—they assure us that they already have their plane tickets!

We lost a great one unexpectedly this week. Rest in Peace Lachlan Clarke! You were an inspiration, a phenomenal horseman, kind soul, incredible teacher and a great friend.

You are missed! Sending much love to your wife, Linda Clarke, and brother, Duncan Clarke, and sister-in-law, Patti Clarke and all who were lucky enough to be in your presence.

I remember my first ride with you, Duncan and a few others at Sanborn Western Camps in 1992 and it was a day that I think of often. We covered ground and it was the first time I really experienced what riding and working on a horse with a purpose felt like. Thanks for taking some of us bull riding in Pueblo, CO and for so many other incredible experiences.

I have few regrets in life. But one was passing on the opportunity to work with you and Linda at Fountain Valley School and the amazing horse program you led there.

Love you and miss you Lach... Our world lost a man of impeccable character, work ethic and incredible knowledge and wisdom...

In 2016 the National Association of Geoscience Teachers presented Bud with the prestigious Neil Miner Teaching Award “in honor of his exceptional contributions to the stimulation of interest in the Earth sciences”.

Bud was honored in October at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Portland. Dr. Herb Meyer, Paleontologist at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument presented a tribute entitled “The 67-Year Legacy of Bud Wobus on the Florissant Quadrangle, Colorado”.

G

raduation festivities at Williams College in May included the retirement of BUD WOBUS (BS 54, Staff 60-68, HTOEC 69, 79, COEC Board 1998-current) honoring 55 years as a professor of geoscience, former head of the department, teacher, mentor, and research supervisor.

Bud was declared the Edna McConnell Clark Professor of Geology, Emeritus. A rock garden adjacent to the new science center at Williams was named in his honor. The garden features eleven large boulders and specimens from across the country -- including Pikes Peak Granite. (see diagram and description on the following page)

Bud’s geology career began in 1954 as a 13-year-old camper at Big Spring where he received an introduction to the Colorado mountains. During the early 60s he began a decadeslong association with SWC/COEC. He created a geology program at BS and HT, led mountaineering and rockhound adventures, created programs and displays at “the Depot” and the Interbarn, helped develop the Prospectors curriculum at HTOEC, led field excursions at TNP, and taught seminars for outdoor educators and camp directors at Stalking Education in the Wild. Bud was an original Board of Trustees member when COEC was founded in 1998 and was recently re-elected to a 4-year term.

It has also been a family affair. Bud met his late wife, SHERRY WITCHER WOBUS (HT Staff 64-70, camp marriage #3) while co-leading mountain climbs in the early years at HT. Both of their sons, ERIK (BS 83-84, Staff 90-91) and CAM (BS 85-87, Staff 93, 95) and grandson ETHAN (BS 2019) attended Big Spring.

Bud’s research and publishing include being the lead author of the Geologic Map of the Florissant 15-minute Quadrangle published in 1978 as well as an author on adjacent geologic quadrangles. These maps all provided data for the Geologic Map of Colorado helping to interpret and understand the detailed geologic history of central Colorado. He did much of his research and mapping while based at Big Spring.

Among the many accomplishments of his tenure are the creation of field-based research opportunities for students in the small liberal arts colleges in western Massachusetts, the co-founding of the Keck Geology Consortium with 18 member institutions across the country supporting undergraduate research and the establishment of travel-study experiences around the world for Williams alumni– including many trips to The Nature Place.

His retirement from Williams is now giving him more time to complete work on his book, “The Big Flat, Colorado’s Subalpine Erosion Surface in the Southern Front Range.

What’s Beneath, What’s Above, What Has Changed.” His book is due to be released in 2022.

We are also open to golf carts, electric trucks and other environmentally friendly vehicles...but this one to the left was fun, but not super functional for the Big Spring Garbage Man.

You can claim it on your taxes as a charitable donation and have the immense satisfaction of knowing that your vehicle has become a member of the long and fabled history of camp vehicles. n a beautiful spring day, a dedicated group of hardy alums and current staff and campers joined us to complete a variety of work projects to help us get ready for our summer season. Staining the Big Spring tent frames before flying the tents is always a big job and MATTHEW HUFFMAN (BS 85; Staff 89-93, 14-16), CHRISTOPHER BONILLA (BS 15-16, 18, 21), ALEX BONILLA (BS 18, 21), RENDLE FUSSELL (BS 86,88), CHRIS “BC” MILLER-McLEMORE (BS Staff 08-09; HTOEC Director 10-14) ULIZIO and CARRIE ELLSWORTH (HT 10-16; Staff 19, 21) joined Mark, PJ, and Kado to make huge progress on this task. They were covered with stain by the end of the day (we had warned them to wear old clothes).

The second painting crew was much neater. SUSAN RISSMAN (HT Staff 8485), ROBYN RISSMAN (HT 85,87,89, 92-93; Staff 95), CARRIE FUSSELL (HT 85-86) Bonilla, and Jerre Fussell painted most of the outside doors at The Nature Place with Jane, Martie, and Lara. (To be honest, this crew may have been especially selected for their neatness ability.)

Three crews were dedicated to picking up downed trees and branches and contributing to our wildfire mitigation efforts. They hauled truckload after truckload from areas around High Trails to the saw mill or our burn pile in Potts Meadow. e’re happy to share the exciting news that we will be breaking ground this Fall for a brand-new Health Center at Big Spring and we plan to have it completed by next summer! It will be located in the flat area in front of the Big Spring Barn where the Real Estate Office is currently located. We do understand that some of you Big Spring boys may have an emotional attachment to the REO and mourn its demise. But, let’s get real! It is really a pretty crummy building and it has to go in the name of progress.

We do promise to carefully sift the debris for 1948 coins or forbidden objects you may have hidden under the floorboards in 1962.

over the years and the Big Spring Health Center, like the HT Health Center, will be modern and up-to-date so our nurses will have the resources they need to provide outstanding medical care for our campers and staff.

In addition to the Health Center, the new building will include (with separate entrances) multiple bathrooms which the boys can use when they are running to the store, heading out for a ride, or eating in the Lodge. It will also house an all-purpose program and meeting room. Designed by architect and alum, camp parent, and COEC Trustee Dan Miller, the new building will blend right in with the western rustic ambiance at Big Spring.

As many of you know, we built a new Health Center at High Trails in 2013, and there has been a bit of jealousy among Big Spring nurses ever since. Expectations and best practices surrounding health care at camp have changed a lot

The Big Spring Health Center has been one of the projects promoted in our Sanborn Tomorrow Capital Campaign and it will be built with funds you generously donated to that campaign. We will update you on its progress throughout the winter and will hope that COVID-19 has receded enough by June, 2022, that we can again welcome parents, alums and friends into the camps so you can see it for yourselves!

unday Rocks is a place we come together in community with each other and with nature and each of us with a meaning of our own. Our voices joined, even if sometimes sung a little off pitch, traveling on the wind in our harmony around our one world.

The path winding upward through the ponderosa pine and granite boulders looked familiar even after many years. At the top on the sloping hillside I found a place to sit looking to the Puma Hills, Wilkerson Pass, and high snowy peaks beyond while the breeze sang through the pines. The feeling of relationship felt familiar. A relationship to the mountains, grasses, the ant crawling on my boot, birds soaring over, the deer who owned the bones I passed, and the bear that must have passed this way marked by the scat on Horse Thief Pass. The creatures seen and unseen on this planet and objects and forces in the earth and skies found nexus with generations of human creatures singing, reciting, musing, and in silent meditation at Sunday Rocks.

On the mountain top, the beauty in view kindled the beautiful memories of songs, instruments, quotes read from little white strips of paper, silences, Sandy’s mountainous voice and rosy cheeks framing his big smile. Edelweiss, My Knapsack on My Back, Blowin in the Wind, The Circle Game, and others were stuck in my head. Along with Sandy there was Phil Allen’s mandolin, Jan San’s and Annie Garretson’s guitar leading clear voices and gruff voices in harmony that was our own offering to the Cosmos.

When is the last time you went to Sunday Rocks? The funny thing about Sunday Rocks is the harmony needn’t be on Sunday. Nor does going to Sunday Rocks need to be on rocks. Songs may change, new faces and wandering places offer voices or energy to nature around us and nature of

our human spirit within. Sunday Rocks crosses space and years. Gatherings of people anywhere, generations past and generations to come have and will be offering joyful hearts and gathering energy from nature all around.

Over time, Sunday Rocks has followed me. When traveling by foot, bicycle, or auto pausing to take in the energy of nature and send an offering of a song, a poem, or quiet breaths honors the nexus of ages and cosmos. At the top of Hoosier Pass by the sign announcing the Continental Divide at 11, 542 feet, we pull over to appreciate the place with breaths and a poem—and if it’s a rest break, to wonder on which side of the divide will the extra water find its flow to the oceans.

Others that haven’t had the good fortune for time at camp embrace the ritual. On a river trip, expect the last morning to be a celebration of Sunday Rocks. The close-knit adventurers remark on the making of friends, what was learned, appreciated, and poetic recitation regales the gathering.

“Some people call me the space cowboy—" was the benediction for a memorable Sunday Rocks on the Colorado River at the mouth of Dark Canyon.

Each of us, with a meaning of our own, come together in community with nature and send our spirit on the winds around one world at Sunday Rocks.

ody Maynard is the new director of High Trails Outdoor Education Center. Kody first attended HTOEC as a Colorado Springs District 20 teacher in 2015 and joined his students each year after that until the program had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 in 2020. In 2018, Kody spent the summer at Big Spring as the art coordinator and enjoyed creating experiences for campers to explore their imaginations in new and creative ways.

Kody continued to help out at camp for staff trainings and workshops, contributing to the environment and community that he cherishes being a part of.

He received a B.A. in Theater Education and M.A. in Human Communication from the University of Northern Colorado. He also has a minor in History and certification in leadership from the UNC in Greeley, CO. After six years teaching in a classroom and directing almost a dozen shows for the school’s drama club, Kody has returned full-time to

• COEC as the director of HTOEC. Thrilled by almost everything and always ready to celebrate, you will find Kody laughing so hard he snorts, or smiling so wide you have to smile too! If you listen carefully across property, you might hear the soft sounds of a songbird or Kody singing the wrong words to every musical theater song imaginable.

ver the last year and a half, we have had to look for “silver linings.” Because we like stars, summer and sunshine--it is only fitting that many of our discovered “silver linings” are also words that begin with the letter “s” and are also exactly what kids need right now from the adults around them.

Think Small: At camp, our living units and cabinsides are the hub of camper relationships. Campers typically branch out and connect with other like-minded campers on different trips and activities, but they always return “home” to those smaller groups.

Beyond the cabinside/unit overnights, cabin/cabinside/tent/unit counselors aren’t traditionally assigned to do activities with just “their” campers during camp. This summer, that changed.

The cohort model we employed in 2021 meant our living units spent most of the first 10 days of camp together, with campers in the living units doing trips and activities with their own staff members. Instead of being bored with having to spend time with the same people, our campers and staff members loved that deeper sense of community and connection.

Go Slow: The smaller communities changed the pace of each day at camp.

Except for the bells bringing us together for meals, the living unit cohort had the ability to set the schedule for the day based on how the group was feeling and what campers and staff wanted to do. There were hikes that became hammock and book reading experiences and games activities that became forest explorations. Because of the consistent time spent with their campers, staff members were better able to plan trips and activities for them. The slower pace was also a respite from the “must-do, must-do”, harried, fragmented, noisy and exceptionally uncertain

world outside of camp.

Provide Structure: Even though the pace was slower, making sure campers and staff had a framework and plan for each day continued to be important. An important addition to that normal camp structure was a new, nightly meeting called “Round-Up”.

Each evening, the living unit would gather together and go through the following: • Shout-outs: gratitude and thank you’s to people inside and outside of the group, an opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the big and little individual efforts made that positively impacted the community.

• Ownerships: sometimes we make mistakes that hurt or have a negative impact our community; taking ownership for those mistakes or missteps allows us to take responsibility for our actions/behaviors, build community compassion, and allow everyone to move on.

• Team Time: could be a fun game, could be a thoughtful question, could be a teambuilding activity...the sky is the limit (but bedtime is also a limit... so most evenings this was a reflection on the day) • Crystal Ball: What is happening in the future? What does the next day look like? What does the next week look like? Who has questions? How do we want this to look?

Staff and campers both appreciated this structure in the evenings, and it also allowed the staff to get on the same page and be more strategic in their work and goals for individual campers and their efficacy as a team.

Simplicity: Compared to the outside world, camp is a pretty simple place.

You have a bed, you have a limited amount of personal stuff, you have set meal times, you have planned activity blocks, you have set bedtimes, and you 20

don’t have any technology to distract you. When you go backpacking, horsepacking, camping or climbing in the backcountry, you bring even less and have even more focus and purpose.

The simple act of silently watching the sun rise or taking the time to watch a deer watching you or playing UNO for hours in a tent with your friends is why a day at camp feels like a year, but a week at camp feels like a day. Simplicity narrows our options, which eases the burden of decision-making and allows us just to be.

Sense of Control: Technology, and social media specifically, provides an illusion of control. Kids (and adults) can turn on their phones and “connect” with other people, but the social currency of “likes” and “loves” and the exposure to cyberbullying, trolling and the nonstop consumption of images and information can be harmful to the development of authentic connections and confidence, especially for developing brains.

Taking the time to build community and understand the pace and structure of camp in smaller groups this summer gave the campers and staff more of a sense of control of the whole camp experience. Because staff members had more autonomy and more responsibility when it came to their individual campers’ outcomes, the first two weeks of camp forced them to work together, to try new things, and to develop competence in outdoor, leadership and youth development skills faster than ever before. Out of that new-found competence came confidence. Similarly for the campers, the smaller community, evening round-ups and time together increased trust and provided the authentic, real-time, IRL (in real life) relationships kids need to feel like they know, understand and trust the people around them and themselves.

• Something to Believe In: Many camps this summer struggled to find staff. Even though good men are often hard to find (and tend to apply really late in the season), we had an exceptional--and robust--group of talented and committed staff members. In a normal summer, we believe in and ask a lot of our staff. During the 2021 summer, we asked even more--and what they accomplished was nothing short of amazing. Each and every one of them believed in and had committed to our mission:“To live together in the outdoors, building a sense of self, a sense of community, a sense of the earth and a sense of wonder through fun and adventure.” They also were deeply invested in the experience for themselves and for the campers. Everyone needed this time in the natural world, these authentic connections to others, this opportunity for personal growth and this space to regain possibility and curiosity. After losing our 2020 summer camp season, we all needed to believe we could stay healthy and let camp happen...and we did it... together.

Somewhere to Belong: This belief in the experience helped create the vessel of the summer--and into it poured the campers from all over the country and world who really hungered for and ached for a consistent community where they could feel a sense of connection and belonging. We had campers and staff who had not been in a classroom with peers since March of 2020. We had campers and staff who had spent most of the pandemic with their immediate families. We had campers and staff who had lost their sense of direction and purpose and were dealing with anxiety resulting from the uncertainty of the unknown.

Camp was a foundational and grounding experience for all of us. This year, it was both known and new in many ways, but it was the community we all needed.

Support: Camp staff are called “camp counselors” for a reason: they support, nurture and guide the growth and development of the campers. It is a hard, hard job. Amy Scott (LJLJ), our mental health specialist, led a staff training session called, “You Have All of the Tools” because, in most cases,

It was the community we all needed. we all do. The long and the short of it is this: each of us has the capacity to hold space for each other if we can acknowledge that we all have emotions and emotions are like the weather: always there and always changing.

Many times, all we need is to be heard and the storm can pass through us.

Counselors (both at camp and with credentials) provide support by being there and giving individuals permission to experience, acknowledge and grow beyond their emotions. People sometimes get stuck, but most of the time, people--and especially children-don’t need us to try and fix the situation. They need us to be there...and, at camp, we have the time and the space and the people to be here for kids and for each other.

Security: The pandemic has exposed many inequities in our society.

Housing, food, health, workplace and financial insecurities have added layers to the pandemic that are complicated and difficult to understand or quickly resolve. The overarching uncertainty and insecurity we are all feeling makes it difficult to know what we should do...individually, collectively, for our family, for our friends, for our communities, for our country. So everyone is trying everything. Or, in the words of a pithy bumper sticker (Alexander Hamilton did NOT actually say, or 21

sing, this), “If you stand for nothing, then you’ll fall for everything.”

So we took a stand last summer and we required PCR tests, campers and staff consistently wore masks in their living units for the first few days of camp, we told counselors who weren’t vaccinated they wouldn’t be able to leave the property for time off, we encouraged campers to get vaccinated if they could, we tested unvaccinated campers weekly until our bubble was formed, counselors couldn’t go to concerts or sporting events or eat indoors during their time-off, our off-site support staff wore masks anytime they interacted with our staff or campers, our counselors wore masks in all public spaces all summer long...the list goes on and on. Yet the security didn’t come from all of the measures we put in place, it came from the trust we placed in our campers, our staff members, our camp families to follow the guidelines and to do the right thing individually so they could protect the experience for each other.

And they did.

Security is knowing that you can count on the people and resources around you to provide you with what you need to survive. Summer 2021 taught us that we can not only survive, but thrive.

Kids have always needed a healthy dose of the “s” words to help them grow and “s”ucceed at home, in school, at camp and in life. Since the world of children is created by the world of adults, we should continue to be intentional in our creation, thoughtful in our consumption, and powerful in our protection of the children in our care.
