Back in the saddle again...

W

hew! We are finally getting back to a little bit of normal and are very excited that we will be welcoming campers and staff back to Big Spring and High Trails within the month. Spring rituals like putting up the Big Spring tents, planning staff training, and ordering program equipment are especially comforting after our past tumultuous year. We hope that your lives are also settling down and that you are able to reengage in activities you enjoy.

Camp will look a little different this year due to the many accommodations we have made to keep everyone safe and healthy, but we are confident that it will still be fun, energetic, and adventure-filled. We will still climb mountains, ride horses, sleep out under the stars, make new friends and have a great time together. We all know that young people need what camp offers more than ever.

We are grateful to Tom Miller for sharing some memories about Big Spring during the Prehistoric Age and encourage all of you writers out there to keep contributing to the Alum News. We had great feedback about the articles Dana Breitenstein and Rob Taylor wrote for our fall edition.

It has occurred to me that we have created a whole new vocabulary due to the pandemic and I thought I would share a few definitions here. If you would like to contribute any of your own, please send them to us. Perhaps we can produce a more complete glossary for our Fall Alum News.

Cohort ko-hort A word that used to mean a companion or colleague and was rarely used because companion and colleague are such much better words. Now it is used multiple times daily and means the people you hang out with who will have to get tested and quarantined if you get COVID-19.

Pivot pi-vet A word that used to be used mainly to describe a quick move on the basketball court. Now used broadly as a verb meaning your business has suddenly collapsed around you and you must find something else to do. “My Mexican restaurant has been closed for six months so I have pivoted into making edible masks from flour tortillas.” Everyone’s new favorite verb.

Zoom zoom To go fast. Example, “the race car zoomed across the finish line.” Currently a noun or verb meaning a range of things all having to do with online activity including meetings, social events, conversations, and a virtual place where one participates in a “zoom.” Sadly, there is no real zooming in Zoom. If only things in Zoom did go fast.

The High Trails Lake... aka: The High Trails Pond, The High Trails Puddle

Dear Alums, Depending on the years you attended Big Spring or High Trails, you knew it as the HT Lake, the HT Pond, or the HT Puddle.

It was a promising place to build a lake at the confluence of two valleys. One valley comes from the pastures above the Quick Homestead. The other drains the upper reaches of A Bluff, the narrow valley from the Crystal Beds and Hidden Valley, and the area below Girls’ Sunday Rocks.

In the mid-60s Sandy hired Ernie Snare, a local heavy equipment operator, and his sons to build a dam just above where the Tick Track (underground 40-inch pipeline that carries water from Mount of the Holy Cross on the other side of the Continental Divide to Colorado Springs – see AlumNews Spring 2020) crosses Olin Gulch.

When the lake filled with water it was a great addition to the camp program – Sandy stocked it with fish, we could do canoe instruction, we rode the horses bareback into the water . . . and best of all . . . it was the site of coed regattas.

Sandy bought a speedboat to cruise around the lake. Rick built a water slide on the slope on the east bank below the road to the Witcher Ranch by laying down a long roll of plastic sheeting and flooding it with the fire truck. Cabin sides and tent groups created carnival booths and competed in boat building contests made with materials scrounged from the dump – the boat that made it the farthest from the shore before sinking was the winner! We bought a giant professional log for log rolling matches. It was a great Saturday afternoon coed event. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

But, alas! Some summers the lake doesn’t fill with water. The watershed above the lake covered a large drainage area, but if the winter didn’t bring a good supply of snow, the water level was low. Because the “soil” in the lakebed is Pikes Peak granite, water slowly drains out. Pikes Peak granite decomposes into small “pebbles” of irregular shape leaving tiny spaces between the particles. Eventually water percolates through the spaces and into the ground water and the aquifer, essentially draining the lake.

A few years later, a former Big Spring staff member, Kasper Van Wijk (BS Staff 1991-98), who was a professor at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, wanted to bring a group of students to do field studies at camp. Sandy challenged them to determine why the lake wouldn’t hold water.

The students spent 2 weeks in May 2005 conducting a battery of tests and probes. They learned that beneath the lake is a fault zone and it is not a good place to build a lake.

Sandy learned of a procedure to apply a layer of Bentonite, a dense clay soil, on top of the granite, which would work its way into the minute spaces and “seal” the bottom of the lake. Ernie Snare came back with his earth moving machines and spread a thick layer of Bentonite at the base of the dam and several yards on the bottom of the lake. It soon became apparent that this did not solve the problem.

Therefore, we have stopped trying to rearrange the geology of Olin Gulch and are grateful when the proper circumstances come together to have a lake for the summer: a winter of heavy snowfall, a rapid spring thaw so that a lot of water runs off to fill the lakebed in a relatively short time, and the horses don’t drink too much water.

We probably won’t buy another speedboat or stock the lake with very many fish. But we’ll probably ride the horses bareback into the water and might even have another Sanborn Regatta.

prehistoric : pre-1974 GAIL GALVANI (HT Staff 65) West has overcome the challenges of 2020 by taking care of grandchildren, singing, exercising, and traveling to Colorado.

She continues to live in Frisco, TX. TERESA-MARIE RHYNE (HT 67-71) has used the COVID-19 shutdown to write “many articles on step-by-step instructions on applying color theory to computer graphics. Over two articles a month. It has been an amazing creative effort!”

JUDY SMITH (HT 65-69; Staff 70, 74-75) Schoedel and husband, Warren, left their winter home in Lake Havasu City, AZ, last March just as the pandemic was beginning and headed back to Buena Vista, CO, where they could isolate in a rural setting. They’ve entertained themselves at home with projects, puzzles, books, gardening, and “probably too much TV”.

BART BERGER (BS 60-65; Staff 66) became Executive Director of Historicorps.org on January 1, 2021. Bart is the founder of the Denver Mountain Parks Foundation and has been a leader in Colorado’s historic preservation efforts for many years.

TOM ARNOT (BS 68-72) and his wife, Rae, decided it was time to retire and move back to the “Lower 48” in 2013 after Tom’s 31-year career as a mechanical engineer in Alaska. Their time in Alaska was filled with many great outdoor adventures; rafting, fishing, camping, kayaking and avoiding mosquitoes. After all those long, dark winters in Alaska, it was time to seek more sunshine and be closer to family, so Colorado was a natural choice. They found the perfect retirement home on the Arkansas River just north of Salida, CO, with a view of five 14ers. Tom vol-

unteers with the local chapter of Trout Unlimited and spends most of his free time fishing, hiking and skiing.

ROB (BS 62; Staff 65-68) and CONNIE McWILLIAMS (HT Staff 66-68) FRIESEN primarily spent their time at home or at their cabin near camp last year, due to the difficulty of travelling during COVID. They feel fortunate that daughter, LAURA (HT 83-88; Staff 92-94), and son, RICK (BS 96-99; Staff 02-05), and his wife, Nicole, live in Denver, and were able to share lots of backyard time with them.

They also met daughter, BETSY (HT 85, 87-90; Staff 92-93, 96-97), and her boys twice in Vail for a hike and picnic.

They also spent time with daughter KATIE (88-93; Staff 95, 97-98), whose family drove from California to the cabin. Three of Connie’s and Rob’s grandsons will be at Big Spring this summer.

BILL WILSON (BS 51-55) continues with industrial minerals consulting and has retired from teaching longer teaching courses at the Colorado School of Mines. He still does some guest lectures at Mines, the South Dakota School of Mines and the University of Colorado Denver School of Business. He also sits on three corporate boards of Canadian mining companies and is a board member and treasurer of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum. During his downtime, he gets in as much fishing as possible.

TOM KOCH (BS 63-64; Staff 66-70) and wife, Sharon, had to abandon their “Winter Quarters” in Palm Springs, CA, earlier than planned and head back to Kansas City in mid-March, 2020, due to the pandemic. Back home, they increased their outdoor activities—walking, bike riding (“It’s 5

not pretty”), and swimming in the neighborhood pool. They were also able to spend some time with son, JON (85-87, 89; Staff 93-94), and four Koch grandchildren at nearby lakes on Jon’s boat. During the fall they followed the success of their Arheart grandchildren, sons of BECKY KOCH (86-87, 89-95; Staff 96, 98) Arheart, whose soccer team took 4th place in the state.

DEDE McFAYDEN (HT 65-66, 68) Donahue has stayed connected with friends who “keep me sane” throughout the pandemic and enjoys Jazzercize, The Yoga Path, and daily walks with her dog, Clashmore. Husband, Pat, retired from his law firm last May, and is quickly diving into some different interests. Both of the Donahues’ children live close by—daughter, Ellen, and her husband live just a few miles away in Omaha, while son, PAUL (BS 98,00) and his family live in Lincoln.

Paul is now at the Cline Williams law firm while wife, Jena is District Director for Congressman Adrian Smith.

Paul and Jena have two children—William, 5, and Theo, 3.

BYRON “PETE” CAIN (BS 65-66) had a very quiet year in 2020 since his Heritage Tours business was 90% dormant due to the virus. He doesn’t plan to retire although he admits that he is getting used to this retiree lifestyle. He has used the quiet time to do “someday projects”. Byron and wife, Nancy, welcomed their son, Jeremy, home after his work with escape rooms in Seattle could no longer operate. Luckily, Jeremy is a great cook, and everyone is enjoyed the family togetherness.

SALLIE SCHAEFER (HT 68-71; Staff 72-77) Ross reported a small world incident. Sallie’s husband, Ken, a bishop in the International Anglican Church, was visiting a church in Boise, ID, when a woman came up to introduce herself. The woman was RIDGELY DENNING (HT 64-70; Staff 71,73) who just happened to mention during their conversation that she had worked at Sanborn Western Camps.

JESSICA THURMOND (HT 63-66; HT Nurse 92) Jurgensen was one of the girls pictured in the pool performing synchronized swimming in our fall Alum News. She recalled how she loved the water and joined a synchronized swim team in college. Her daughter, SARAH PANTANO (HT 89,91) Scott followed in her footsteps and competed nationally. Jessica is now enjoying teaching synchronized swimming moves to her granddaughter and her friends.

ELIZABETH “BETTY” LINSEY (HT 69-70) is living in North Carolina with longtime boyfriend, Lew Robertson. Betty and Lew are both retired teachers—Betty retired in 2016 after teaching 2nd and 4th graders for 20 years. Prior to that she worked in Antarctica from 1985-1994, and hiked the southern 1000 miles of the Ap-

palachian Trail in 83. She continues to teach swimming as a Red Cross WSI and dabbles in silver jewelry since her introduction to metal smithing at HT! DIANE BROWNLEE (HT 70-73) Ginther and husband, Paul, became grandparents twice in two months last fall. Granddaughter Maxine Jeanne Ginther arrived on September 11 and granddaughter Charlie Arey Ginther arrived on November 22. Diane and Paul spent almost a month in Kansas City helping out after Max’s arrival.

Luckily, Charlie and her parents live near the Ginther’s retirement home in Ashville, NC. ALEXANDER “SANDY” DOMINICK (BS 62-67) wrote “Flying the Hump: The War Diary of Peter H. Dominick” in 2018, about his dad’s service in World War II. Peter Dominick, who served as a Senator from Colorado from 1963-75, didn’t talk about the war much, but after his death, his family found “a tiny book, about 2x3 inches, and inside, written in pencil, was the second half of a daily diary. It started ‘June 23’ (cont)” More than thirty years later, when his mother sold the family home, they found part 1 of the diary. “Put together the two halves tell an incredible story of heroism, sheer terror, and boredom in between. He was tasked with flying cargo from India over the Himalayas into China.

It was called Flying the Hump, and was called the most deadly 6

air route in the world. Hence its other name, the aluminum trail.”

SUSAN UPTEGROVE (HT Staff 64-65) Myrick and husband, Jay, were fortunate to enjoy a cruise to New Zealand in early 2020. They arrived back in Chicago on February 28 just days before the shutdowns. Susan spent the first part of lockdown cleaning and rearranging their home while Jay worked on projects in the library. Susan stayed in touch with her tap dance troupe and was able to get in some good reading time. Susan and Jay did manage to sneak in a trip to visit son, ANDY MYRICK (BS 84-88) and his family, in Pennsylvania.

KATE FRIESEN (HT 62, 64-66; Staff 67-68) and husband, Peter Westcott, had to reduce their normal travel schedule in 2020. Although they did manage to make it to Texas before the pandemic hit, they had to cancel trips to Portugal and Michigan. During the lockdown, they stayed busy adding a room to their house—and they did almost all of the work themselves!

dark ages : 1974-1991 SHERI BONE (HT Staff 80-82; TNP 2007) Fedorchak continues to enjoy working as a park planner for Rocky Mountain National Park, while husband, Rich, retired after 36 years with the National Park Service. Like other residents of Estes Park, CO, they were forced to flee from their home in October when the entire town was evacuated due to the massive wildfires in the area. They were grateful to find their home unscathed on their return.

KRISTY BORNHOEFT (HT 8687, 89; Staff 93) Sands and husband, Craig, have determined that their 2020 Life lesson is “Expect the unexpected”; their greatest joy has been “Extra family time” with daughters, Emily, high school senior, Katy, high school sophomore, and ASHLEY (HT 17), 8th grade. Their home remodels have included turning the living room into a dance studio, the patio into a corona beach, the kitchen into a creativity center, and the family room into a therapy office.

JEN SCHOFIELD (HT 85-90; Staff 93-95) Law and family celebrated husband, Pete’s 50th birthday in Las Vegas pre-pandemic, cheered/coached daughter, EMILY (HT 14-19, 21), through a winning hockey season and attended a Family Business Conference in Florida. Post-pandemic they staged a prom for daughter, Jacqueline, at home and celebrated her high school graduation virtually. They also rented a camper and explored Yellowstone and the Tetons before taking Jacqueline to the University of New Hampshire.

MIKE (BS Staff 86-88) and JENNY MORTON (HT Staff 86, 88) AZBELL did not really have the first year of Mike’s retirement that they antici-

pated, so they bought an RV so they could travel safely from their home in Dillon, CO. They named their RV Ridley, after Ridley’s sea turtle, since they now could carry their little house with them. Unfortunately, Jen broke her leg badly in December of 2019 and spent most of the year learning to walk again and regaining her fitness. Son, CHRIS (BS 12-13, 15), is 22 and in his 5th year of university because he has 3 majors! Son, DANIEL (BS 15-17), is 19 and in his second year of engineering at the Colorado School of Mines.

Both boys had summer jobs in the Dillon area.

GREG BARRETT (BS 80, 83) and wife, Precia, had a lot of family togetherness in 2020 with their three sons. JACK (BS 08-16) is now back at Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX. LUKE (BS 09-17) graduated from Casady High School in Oklahoma City last spring and is now in his freshman year at Denver University. BROCK (BS 11-19, 21) is in his junior year in high school. The Barrett family also enjoyed a family vacation in Colorado last summer.

RON FISHER (BS Staff 83) and wife, Denise, “spent the vast majority of the year purging and tossing” at their home in Woodland Park, CO. Daughter, Anne, is “in the Deep South playing with neutrons, protons, and elections”. Son, Jack, will graduate from CU Boulder in May with a BA in International Affairs.

DANA BREITENSTEIN (HT 78-82; Staff 85-89) reports that the politics may be changing in Hong Kong, but its sheer natural beauty is not. Dana, who lives in Hong Kong with her family, wrote the wonderful article in our last issue of the Alum News about conquering all of the 54 Fourteeners in Colorado. She has not given up climbing mountains and recently posted her latest feat on Facebook. “Thanks to the Peak Master Challenge, I spent the past 125 days climbing the highest 125 peaks in Hong Kong. From the northern peaks on the China border to the southern most outlying islands, HK continues to blow me away. Thank you to all my friends and family who kept me laughing up and down each and every peak, even when we were neck high in thorny bushes or sliding

down slippery slopes!”

CARRIE BROWN-WOLF (HT Staff 86, 88) is running writing workshops for some local non-profits, continuing her own writing, and tutoring.

Husband, Dan, is still practicing law in Vail. Daughter, ELLIE (HT 07), is working on a plant farm in Maryland for a year and is most excited about getting free dead plants that she can revive. OLIVIA (HT 11-17) is thriving in California. She rides her bike to work at a juice bar and also an animal hospital. Son, TYE (BS 09), graduates from St. Andrews this year and won a full-ride scholarship to further his education in international relations with a MA in Beijing with a group of international students. Carrie has also launched a Patreon account and is leading a journaling class, JOURNAL JUICE. “It’s not your typical writing workshop—it’s better! There’s no need to zoom or set your clocks to a specific time. Twice a month, I’ll provide you with juicy creative bits to inspire and help you develop and nurture a journaling practice.”

PAM BARIT (HT 71-76; Staff 82) Nolan has been raising money to help the Sonshine School in Uganda.

She visited this school in 2019 and connected with its mission and purpose. In 2020, she raised enough money to finish the school building and courtyard and also bought the school a secondhand van to transport teachers and students as needed. She is now working on raising funds to build a second campus for the school so that students over the age of 9 can continue their education.

BETSY FRIESEN (HT 85-90; Staff 92-93, 96-97) McMichael continues to teach 4th grade in Carbondale, CO, where she has coped well with the pandemic whether teaching virtually

or in person. Husband, Malcolm, has juggled working from home and at the office. Sons, Dean, 15, and Andy, 13, enjoy the all the outdoor activities available in the are including hiking, camping, and skiing.

LAURA FRIESEN (HT 83-88; Staff 90, 92-94) reconnected with her NYC yoga teachers and friends for a retreat in Belize last March before the pandemic began. Back at home in Denver, she has kept herself busy with online art classes but misses the richness of in-person learning.

VICKY “TORI” MARGOLIS (HT 79-83) McGuinness and family live in Landenberg, PA. Despite COVID, they enjoyed two trips west last summer. They visited a dude ranch in Colorado in June where they rode horses and rafted the Arkansas River.

They also skied at Jackson Hole, WY, over Thanksgiving. Tori and husband, Kevin, have two children: Mary Grace turned 16 and is excited to have her driver’s license while Patrick is busy with hockey, soccer, tennis and Boy

Scouts.

JANN HARRIS (HT Staff 80-82) Kinney and family “is blessed to have remained employed with food on their tables” but are looking forward to the end of the pandemic. Husband, Kraige, has used his at-home time productively by working on several home projects, while Jann has been sewing masks, 8

reading, working at the library, cooking creatively and “has not run out of toilet paper even once”. Daughter, Meredith, has spent this year learning how to be a physical education teacher, while Annabelle continues to work at the district attorney’s office.

SARAH CHAUNER (HT 85,87-88,90) Cyphers and husband, Scott, were able to take their annual couples’ trip to Costa Rica before the world shut down in 2020. They spend most of their time working and keeping the family engines moving but did get away from Northbrook, IL, to Florida and “an amazing trip” to the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park. Son, COLIN (BS13-17, 19), got his driver’s license and started his first job. Daughter, HANNAH (HT 14-19, 21), was fortunate enough to spend her 8th grade year in person.

VALERIE KOPP (HT Nurse 78-79; OLE staff 79) VanValkenberg retired in April, 2020, after 44 years as a nurse and is currently helping with baby day care for her grandson, Mac. She and husband, Carl, live in Boise, ID, and are looking forward to traveling when the pandemic is over. Val has fond memories of camp which include happy times spent with her lifelong best friend, MARGOT SCHLEGEL CROMACK MEG VOGT (HT 76-79; Staff 82) continued to operate her dog day care business in Portland, OR, through the pandemic and appreciated having less traffic to drive her “Magic Bus” in. She and her partner, Deb, managed to take some fun road trips—to Bozeman, MT, and Yellowstone Park, and to Scottsdale, AZ, for her niece’s wedding.

THADDEUS PHILLIPS (BS 8488; Staff 90) lives on the outskirts of Bogota, Columbia, with his wife and son, Rafael. He made a theater work that is now the longest running remote virtual live show—Zoo Motel www.

olden days: 1992-present HEIDI SCHOEDEL (HT 96-03; Staff 09) and her pets have spent the pandemic quarantining in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. She has withstood four hurricanes and a tropical storm, and spent part of her time uploading yoga videos to her YouTube channel, Yoga Camino Hacia La Luz. TAD SCHOEDEL (BS 96-01) married Dr. Alina Polonsky in September.

They were planning a fall wedding, but due to the corona virus, they eloped so their families would not have to travel to a traditional wedding. Both doctors continue to live and practice medicine in Roanoke, VA. RICK FRIESEN (BS 96-99; Staff 0205) and wife, Nicole, bought a house in Denver last summer and have been busy turning it into a home for themselves and their two energetic dogs.

Rick and Nicole are both doctors and are enjoying their work at Children’s Hospital.

KATIE FRIESEN (HT 88-93; Staff 95-98) Reneker and husband, Ben, continue to live in Carmel Valley, CA, where Katie is successfully growing her Carmel Berry Company business. https://carmelberry.com/ Son, Roy, 14, builds computers, writes programs and has built a flight simulator. Henry, 11, composes music, runs with Ben, and reads a lot. Both boys are excited about their new dog, Norman.

MARGOT SALMELA (HT Staff 9596) Dorion has been working at Cate School in Carpinteria, CA, for 15 years as a college counselor and enjoys the one-on-one work with juniors and seniors. She also has the opportunity to go backpacking (and recently kayaking) with students regularly.

ELLY BUCHOLZ (HT 97-02; Staff 05) and her dogs, Ben and Abe, have settled into big city living in Chicago since moving there in September, 2019.

She works in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Loyola Medical School. “I am working with a patient population I adore and partners who support and complement my growing practice”.

LIZZIE CONNELLY (HT 95-98; Staff 98-99) Fischer, husband, Woody, and son, Henry, summarized 2020 perfectly in their Holiday card. “We stayed home. We made things. We played.

We zoomed. We cooked, a lot. We grew veggies (at least we tried). One of us learned to swim. One of us made bread, a lot of bread. We grew older.

We took walks. We made mistakes. We rested. We watched movies, and shows, and more shows. We barely drove.

We got takeout. We narrowly avoided running out of toilet paper. We giggled.

We yelled. We worked it out. We distanced. We air-hugged. We celebrated.

And we’ll continue to grieve all of the losses of 2020.”

LIZ DUBINSKY (HT 92-96; Staff 98) Daoust was elected president of the school board in Orinda, CA, last December. She and husband, Mark, have busy lives keeping up with their three daughters LUCY, 11, (HT 18-19, 21) ANNIE, 9 (HT 19, 21) and PHOEBE, 7 (HT 21) as well their two new puppies. The girls adore their aunt EMILY DUBINSKY (HT 92-97; Staff 99), who is a gemologist and designer of stunning jewelry in New York City. (emilyemmettjewelry.com) PATRICK (COEC Staff 94-99) and EVAN SCHMIDT (HT 90-93; Staff 96, 99-00, 02) HUBER limited their travel in 2020 to the hallway of their home 9

in Davis, CA. “Evan became a CEO at work and an Administrative Assistant at home, and Patrick continued his research at UCD but also began teaching at HOME.” Daughter, Isis started high school from home, while son, Ambrose “is couch bouncing through 4th grade”.

DAVID O’HARA (BS 04-12) is finishing up his first year of AMU’s full-time MBA program where he is studying finance. This summer he will head back to St. Louis to work for Anheuser-Busch in their sustainability and procurement group. David also writes a newsletter called The Weather Report where he highlights news/business news that flew under the radar each week. You can find it at https://slightlycloudy.com/ DOMINIC GIBBS (BS 10-12, 14-15) recently won the World Equestrian Center Premier Cup Equitation championship in Ocala, FL, where he bested a field of 58 talented junior riders and won a 2021 Chevrolet Blazer. WILSON RAWLINGS (BS 07-15; Staff 17) and DREW BARNICLE (BS Staff 17-18) first met at camp when they were on the staff together and then became good friends while working at University Bikes in Boulder where they are both students. So when Drew couldn’t return home to Vermont for Christmas due to COVID travel restrictions, he spent the holidays in

Peter Whiteley

July 20, 1943—February, 2021 Peter (BS 57-59; Staff 60-61, 63) became a legend at Big Spring for many reasons, but primarily because he was one of the inventors of “Schmerltz”, a game played by placing a glob of dirt into a lost and found sock and tying a knot above the ball, then throwing it into the air and yelling “Schmerltz”. There are teams involved and a few rules but they change all the time, and the game is still enthusiastically played at the camps, although the glob of dirt has evolved into a tennis ball. Peter commented years later that “I think the name “Schmerltz” was inspired by Mad Magazine, but it has no real linguistic roots or meaning, as near as I can tell”.

The game became world-famous (in some circles) years later when it appeared in “The New Games Book” in 1976 and in the 1990’s when the Klutz Toy Company came out with “The Foxtail”, a thinly disguised schmerltz with a ball

Peter graduated from Wesleyan University and Rhode Island School of Design and then returned to Menlo Park, California and got a job as an art director at Sunset Magazine. He stayed at Sunset for 37 years, becoming a writer in the Building Department where he covered architecture, landscape design, wood working, and green building.

Following Sandy’s death, Rob continued to expand and enhance the offerings at The Nature Place, leading it to become a world-class center for team and leadership development. Rob’s friendly, easy-going manner made every guest feel special and created the atmosphere of warmth and caring that characterizes The Nature Place. More than 90% of the clients who attend The Nature Place, return for additional sessions.

Rob also became COEC’s Astronomer-in-Chief and introduced the wonders of the night skies to countless adults and children over the years. He spent numerous nights at the Observatory, patiently pointing the telescope at whatever planet or nebulae was available in the sky.

Virtually all of the fire mitigation and forest management work we have done over many years was initiated by Rob. He partnered with the Coalition for the Upper South Platte to develop COEC’s Community Wildfire Plan and has worked ceaselessly to implement that plan, sometimes with the help of the Colorado State Forest Service. Rob is a master of the chainsaw and has personally cleared more dead trees from the areas around our buildings and exit routes than anyone else in the history of the camps.

andy found him on the beach. For many years, Sandy and Laura vacationed on Grand Cayman Island where they became friends with other travelers who also stayed at the Pan-Cayman House on 7-mile beach.

Rob’s parents were among these friends and, during one fortunate week in 1988, Rob joined his parents in Grand Cayman. Sandy and Rob shared long walks and talks on the beach.

Rob met his wife, Katya Petriwsky, at The Nature Place when she attended a training for consultants of MacKenzie Corporation. They were married in 2002 in Virgin Gorda, and Katya continued her work with MacKenzie from their home near The Nature Place until she retired last fall.

Rob, originally from Cincinnati, headed to Colorado that summer to work as a Ridge Leader at Big Spring. He stayed on to teach during the Fall HTOEC program and, by the winter of 1989, became the Director of The Nature Place.

Rob’s impact on the development of The Nature Place and its programming for the past 31 years has been immeasurable; his contributions to COEC as a whole have been extraordinary—leading the way in developing professional practices, care for the facility and land, serving as a critical member of the leadership team. He retired at the end of 2020 and we are incredibly grateful to him.

Rob and Katya have retired to their home in Salida, CO, where they will have time to pursue their many passions, including travel, skiing, and hiking. We do expect to see them around Florissant from time-to-time in the future since Rob has promised to continue to wield his chainsaw to aid in our wildfire mitigation efforts.

Rob and Sandy worked together to create specialized programs which met the needs of clients from the education and business communities, including a cutting-edge training for Denver University’s MBA students. They also welcomed natural history groups from many places. Rob, who had a degree in geology, was deeply interested in and

After being a camper for 6 years, in 1971 I was going to be an Assistant Counselor -- glorified name for a dishwasher, which was actually a great adventure. During my dishwashing duty, I noticed that once in a while a glass would drop or chip in such a way so that the glass was intact except for a small hole in the bottom rim of the glass-- otherwise it looked totally normal. I got the idea that we should collect a set of these - 12 for a full table. Once we had a complete set, we went to work. Usually a table is set with the glasses upside down, but this time we set one table with the glasses upright all with a hole in the bottom just waiting for a nice full glass of "Bug Juice". Well, it was quite a sight to see all the thirsty campers (and 2 counselors) fill their glasses only to find Bug Juice leaking all over the table and onto themselves.

• HOMEMADE RASPBERRY PIE

Can't remember the exact year -- either 1973 or 1974. Was running some type of activity in the afternoon at Witcher's Ranch. We started exploring west of the farmhouse late in the afternoon and came across some very ripe raspberry bushes and kept finding more and more. It was late in the afternoon and we didn't have time to pick them. Had to make tracks back to camp for dinner.

Didn't want the berries to go to waste, so I asked Jerry to add in a special evening activity for our group to pick the berries. We picked a whole bunch and took them back to camp.

The cooks were the best and a day later we scheduled another special activity-- eating Homemade Raspberry Pie. Likely the only Raspberry Pie activity camp has had.

off to the east and the skies seemed to be clearing, but being on the east side of the mountain you really don't know what else could be coming from the west. I gambled that it wouldn't rain any more. It was dusk and I said: "Who wants to climb Mt Sherman and spend the night on the top"? (I hadn't been to the top, but heard that it was fairly flat up there with some grass) So, about a dozen of us went for an evening hike with a flashlight, sleeping bag, water bottle, and, of course, a candy bar. All went fine. Summited the peak and spread out our sleeping bags -- blessed with clear skies. The next morning we were hiking down for breakfast while the next group was climbing up. What an adventure!
