W

e are enjoying a spectacular fall at the ranch. Golden leaves have decorated our aspen for more than a month now and the blue of the sky is a little brighter during September and October. Temperatures are beginning to drop though, and it won’t be long before we transition into winter.

Our 71st summer was outstanding and we are still cherishing the memories of mountains climbed, friendships made, songs sung, and horses ridden. If you check out the “Chips off the Old Block” section of this magazine, you may note that more than one third of our current campers are the children, grandchildren, and even a few great-grandchildren of alums. We are incredibly grateful for these long-term relationships and for your support and friendship over generations.

The addition looks great and gave the boys a lot more elbow room during meals (unfortunately, it did not make the lodge any less noisy) And we will begin rebuilding Ponderosa at High Trails in early November!

We are also happy to announce that, thanks to your support and thoughtful gifts, we have achieved our goal of raising $3,500,000 in our “Sanborn Tomorrow” Capital Campaign. The Scholarship Endowment that we envisioned several years ago is now a reality and is augmenting annual giving into the Sandy and Laura Scholarship Fund so that more young people can attend camp and our HTOEC program.

Your donations have also allowed us to continue with our facility improvements. We were able to finish an addition to the Big Spring Lodge before camp started.

In this issue, we are also happy to share the memories of two alums—Rob Taylor and Andy Weed—who responded to our invitation for stories. We will say “Thank-you” here since that is all they will get. (We pay $0 per word) The invitation to submit stories to the Alum News is always open.

Our Prehistoric, Dark Ages, and Olden Days news is a little sparse in this edition. We hope to have a big newsfilled edition next Spring so please step it up. As you may know, if we don’t receive enough legitimate news for our Spring Alum News, we will have to make it up.

Dear Alums, On August 20, 1969, President Richard Nixon signed the act creating the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument south of Florissant bordering the eastern boundary of Sanborn Western Camps. On August 17, 2019, the FFBNM celebrated its 50th anniversary with ceremonies at the Monument and a banquet held at The Nature Place.

The event brought together former park superintendents,

Monument staff members spanning 50 years, national park dignitaries, local officials, people who fought for the Monument and residents of the Florissant area. Jane Sanborn represented SWC/COEC on a panel of neighbors. The Nature Place staff provided an evening “to be remembered.”

We have an outstanding relationship with our neighbor to the east. During the summer, many groups from camp hike to the Monument through the Bat Caves and visit the giant Sequoia stumps, talk with the rangers, and join the Junior Ranger program. They are also able to dig for fossils on a private site, which is not within the Monument boundaries. During the fall and spring, a ranger works 3

with our school groups who are on the Time Machine all day, and helps to train our staff on the geologic history of the area.

The fossils were formed 34 million years ago in the Eocene Period when volcanic ash spewed and flowed from a volcano southwest of camp near the town of Guffey and Black Mountain in the vicinity of the camps’ five-day horse trips.

The fossil deposits are widely considered to be one of the richest and most diverse in the world with about 1,700 described species – from the giant redwood stumps to preserved patterns in delicately-winged butterflies to fossil pollen.

The earliest Western explorers and settlers noticed the unique formations. One mountain man wrote in his journal, “Putrefied birds singing putrefied songs from putrefied trees.” In the 1870s scientists began to document and study the fossil insects, spiders, leaves, flowers, and fish. Prestigious universities and museums sent collecting parties to Florissant and returned with hundreds of specimens.

In the meantime the legal team succeeded in obtaining a temporary restraining order in the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals to halt construction. The delay allowed the House and Senate to pass the bills that created the national monument in early August, 1969.

Eventually two competing privately owned tourist attractions emerged and even more treasures were removed. The Pike Petrified Forest included the famous petrified stumps known as the Redwood Trio and later became the site of the Monument visitor center. Nearby, the Colorado Petrified Forest was operated by the Singer family. The National Park Service began purchasing the 6000 acres of the ancient Lake Florissant lakebed to create the new national monument. Sandy and Laura sold 120 acres of fossil-bearing land near Potts Spring for inclusion in the Monument.

We are fortunate to play a vital role in the protection of these unique fossils and to be a partner in the mission of the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. In addition, we owe thanks to the farsighted group of environmentalists who preserved them fifty years ago.

prehistoric : pre-1974 JOHN ROLLINS (BS 55-56) recently retired after 30 years as CEO of a software company he founded and 15 years as a Professor of Entrepreneurship at George Washington University. He and his wife are now traveling more and love visiting National Parks where they enjoy hiking. He still serves on several boards including his favorite, the National Park Trust. The couple lives in Washington, DC and recently completed biking, in segments, the 184-mile C&O Canal towpath from Georgetown to Cumberland, MD. John remembers taking the Missouri Pacific train each summer from Kansas City to Colorado Springs “where we hopped on a school bus to camp”.

DIANA “ZIGGY” ZIEGLER (HT Staff 6467) LaViolette recently wrote her memoirs

and included a chapter about camp which she was kind enough to share with us. It includes many great stories, which will no doubt end up in future editions of the Alum News, but for now we’ll include this sample “There is/was so much to love about the camp—but what I have held close to my heart for now going on fifty-plus years is what I gained in a wealth of friendships, new skills, deeper appreciation of nature, a sense of freedom and the great joy that comes from living out-of-doors.” Ziggy has retired as a Judge and she and husband John live in Greencastle, IN JAN KAPLAN (HT Staff 75; HTOEC Staff 74-75) has been doing some impressive hiking in her retirement. She recently completed the Tour du Mont Blanc and in 2018 did

the Camino Portugues from Lisbon (about 550 miles). In 2017 she hiked the Camino Frances (747 miles) in Spain in 2017. When not hiking the world she volunteers in a Title 1 public school in Phoenix.

JOHN FELDMAN (BS 69-70) and wife, Ann, have moved to Denver. They “are really enjoying the city and may decide to settle downtown.” Son, JOSH (BS 02-08; Staff 11) also lives in Denver and has been accepted into the Data Science program at DU. Son, JORDAN (BS 03-08) is working in property management for Moving Mountains in Steamboat Springs. “The boys and I just went backpacking for 4 days in the Frying Pan Wilderness. There was lots of reminiscence about our Sanborn history.”

dark ages : 1974-1991 ROB BARTH (BS Staff 91; HTOEC Staff 91) launched from Expedition Island, Green River, Wyoming on May 24, 2019. He represented the USGS on the 150th Anniversary reenactment of John Wesley Powell’s epic expedition down the Colorado River Basin.

Rob was able to participate in the first segment of the Sesquicentennial Colorado River Exploring Expedition (SCREE) from Green River, WY to Flaming Gorge Dam, UT. Rob and others on the journey assisted with scientific experiments and research projects including soil sampling for microplastics, an aquatic insect and bat population study and water quality sampling.

BLAIR LEWIS (HT 74-77) Williams and husband, Bob, visited camp this Fall with daughters KATE WILLIAMS (HT 97-04) Montgomery and JENNY WILLIAMS (HT 97-06) Schmidt. It was wonderful to see them all! Blair and Kate live in Tulsa with their families and Jenny lives in Houston with her husband.

MARK DEARDORFF (BS 71-74; Staff 75, 77-79) merged his pediatrician practice into “Phoenix Childrens Primary Care” last fall.

He is planning to work a few more years and then “call it a day”. Son, Reed, enjoys living in Minneapolis and working as a carpenter for a home remodeling company. Son, Kent, is finishing his final year of physical therapy school at the Mayo Institute in Rochester, MN. Mark’s wife, Liz, spends the summer on Pelican Lake about 3 ½ hours from Minneapolis and Mark travels back and forth from Phoenix.

JED FOSTER (BS 86-89) and MARA DUBLIN (HT 87, 89) have announced their engagement. Though Mara and Jed met at camp in the eighties, life took them in different directions for a few decades. They reconnected last year and now will become another Sanborn marriage!

CHRIS LAGER (BS 88-91; Staff 98-99) has been teaching visual arts and photography in Jefferson County School District in Denver for 15 years. He currently teaches at North Arvada Middle School where son, Wyatt, is enrolled in the gifted and talented program.

MITCH SMOLLER (BS Staff 79-81) is co-coordinator of student support, school counselor, and peer mentor coordinator at Paine Mountain School District in Williamstown ,VT. Mitch is also busy training for his annual century bike ride around VT. Son Nathan is a nationally recognized Nordic skier at Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. He will be skiing for the NCAA College of Saint Scholastica in Duluth, MN. Daughter Gillian

PAM BARIT (HT 71-76; Staff 82) Nolan works for an organization called Adara Development which supports mothers and children in Uganda and Nepal with education and access to health care. Pam lives in Bermuda.

MIKE WILSON (BS Staff 92-93) his wife, Sarah, and sons Ben, 13, Alex, 11, and Luke, 8, are still living in the French Alps and love adventuring in the outdoors. They love cycling (of course! Mike’s camp nickname was “Mike the Bike”), skiing, hiking, canoeing and rock climbing. Ben is already competing at national level for swimming. During the past few years Mike, not wanting to be bored, restructured his company, built a new family home and studied to become a qualified MTB instructor and guide.

KURT MUELLER (BS Staff 85) is a retired Missouri State Trooper living in Holts Summit, MO. He and his wife Deidre are enjoying their retirement home in a log cabin on 24 acres on the bluffs near the Missouri River and spending time with their three-yearold grandson (and future Camper!) Elias.

Kurt brought his wife and kids to the 70th Reunion to share one of his favorite places in the world with them!

Sarah Benson reported that “The 4th Annual Sanborn Camp staff reunion/Rockies game” was Saturday, July 16th, at Coors Field. In attendance were PAT MURPHY (BS Staff 7475), MARK MUNGER (BS Staff 72, 75-76), Deborah Morgan and BEN NORTHCUTT (BS Staff 73-75), ANNE HEWSON (HT Staff 75) Keen, BOB (BS 67-71; Staff 72,74,76) and SARAH BAUSCH (BS Nurse 75-76) BENSON, SUE and BOB LAYS (BS 65-70; Staff 71-78), and Teri and MARTIN LAYS (BS 69-71, OLE 74) The game was delayed 3 hours and 10 minutes due to lightning and rain which gave the friends plenty of time to catch up with one another!

CLAIRE DONOHUE (HT 90-92, 94) continues in international humanitarian logistics for Relief International although she has begun to “settle a bit” and bought her first house in upstate New York. She still travels a lot throughout the Middle East, Asia and Africa—“all the fun places like South Sudan, Yemen, Iraq, Bangladesh, etc” but is trying to take more time to enjoy New York and visit with friends.

Sanborn alums who helped Ben and Deborah celebrate included Pat Murphy, Anne Keen, Mark Munger and Paul Nelson. “After the wedding we took a honeymoon to San Francisco for a couple of days, then north to Sonoma County for a few days. It was a wonderful trip and married life is treating us quite well. I hope to bring Deborah along for a visit some day to Sanborn’s to see where I spent some of the most memorable times of my life!”

CLARE HOLDERNESS (HT 89-91) Mishler moved to Portland, OR, from Houston after college in 2006 and met her husband in 2008.

They have been married for almost a decade and have two children: Everett Finn, 4, and Elliot Everly, 1) Clare is a pediatric RN case manager at Randall Children’s Hospital, helping families of children with traumatic injuries or illness return home following treatment.

BEN NORTHCUTT (BS Staff 73-75) married Deborah Morgan, a Denver native of Italian descent. The wedding took place at Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood on August 17. It was a “fairly modest affair”, about 70 people. The weather was great as

Every summer, we have an incredible group of 150 college-aged men and women who spend 11 weeks building a sense of self, a sense of community, a sense of the earth and a sense of wonder through fun and adventure together at our single-gender, inclusive, brother/sister camps--Big Spring Ranch for Boys and High Trails Ranch for Girls. Sanborn Camps are located on 6,000 acres of pristine Colorado land one hour west of Colorado Springs. Carlotta loved rock climbing and was the major creator of our rock-climbing program at camp. She became certified as an instructor, personally led many trips, and taught innumerable staff members and campers the skills and safety considerations in rock climbing.

Her work in the school weeks program is legendary. Never interested in being the front-person, Carlotta nurtured and supported many HTOEC directors. She always knew what needed to happen next, knew where the thing you needed was located, and knew which staff needed a little extra mentoring. She has continued in that role for forty years.

C

arlotta Avery is retiring this Fall and not just retiring a little bit as a couple other members of our senior staff have done in recent years. She will actually be moving back to Michigan where her large extended family lives. Her contributions to Sanborn Camps, High Trails Outdoor Education Center and COEC in her more than 40 years with us are immeasurable.

During the past two decades, Carlotta took over the role of supervising the kitchens. She has capably guided the camps through the age of special dietary needs and created a menu which includes vegetarian options, gluten-free options, lactose-free options, nut-free options and many combinations of those too numerous to mention. She has hired and trained many, many cooks and filled in herself when someone didn’t show up. Oh, and by the way, she supervised the laundry too!

Many of you knew Carlotta for a slice of her time here and remember her fondly for organizing camp trips or helping to lead the HTOEC program, or teaching you to rock climb, or, more recently for heading up the camp kitchens. But very few staff have been with her through her entire journey and can truly understand the breadth of all that she contributed.

Through all these years, she continued to learn more and more about the natural world and has always been the go-to person if someone wanted to know what wildflower they found or which bird they saw. In recent years, she has taken hundreds of stunning photos of wildflowers, birds, sunsets, and natural scenes of all types.

Carlotta first came to Sanborn Camps in 1978 as nanny for Kacie and Carrie Sanborn and later for Phil and Pat Perry.

It soon became evident that she had so many interests and abilities that she could contribute in many ways to the community. Her lifelong love of the natural world made her a perfect fit for the role of first Director of the Interbarn and she held that position for many years.

Hard worker, behind the scenes rock, trip leader, creator of menus and rock-climbing programs… the most significant contribution she made in her more than 40 years with COEC are all the people—staff and campers—she mentored, nurtured, and supported.

She soon expanded into trip-leading and Carlotta has led virtually every mountain trip we take-most of them multiple times. Even today she is the first person we turn to when someone calls in from a trip and is having a hard time finding the way. Carlotta can tell them to “turn right at that big Spruce tree” on Mt. Oxford or “follow the trail that goes below the cabin ruins” on Mt. Elbert and help them get back on the right path. Carlotta also spent many years organizing our entire trip program—doing everything from submitting our paperwork to the Forest Service to planning our trip leader training. She worked with trip leaders through the summer, especially at High Trails, preparing them for their trips and the bags she prepared for each trip—which held everything from maps to emergency instructions and

Stand out memories include...best Mabel Queen EVER; most trusted and talented hay truck driver when the stack was high, the hills steep, and the trucks unwieldy; tenacious broom ball player; Queen of the Interbarn; knowledgeable bird watcher; talented photographer; and best contagious giggle.

What will always stand out most is Carlotta’s kindness, her calm presence and her supportive nature. She has always been generous with her time, experience, and collective camp wisdom. Whenever I needed to find something or remember where a certain spring tank was, I would just ask Lottie. I’ve never known her to have a bad word about anyone. She has an uncanny ability to find the positive in people and in challenging situations. She has taught me to see the glass as half full rather than half empty. And did I mention her distinctive laugh?

Carlotta was one of the best at keeping track of how her friends and coworkers were doing. She knew that worn-down staff don’t work well, and kept tabs on us even though we didn’t know it. There were numerous times where I was reading a magazine or a computer screen and Lotti would say, “BC, where are your glasses?” When I would respond that I didn’t have glasses, she’d say, “Well, you need some!”

She knew when we were tired, run down, or in need of a break and would help us to make that happen. She truly cares about those around her, and this is what has made her such an integral part of COEC.

The entire camp ended up at the Big Spring lodge where we sat in the darkness created by more foil on the windows and a couple hundred of us watched a very grainy black and white image of a portable TV put in the upper shelf of the bookshelves in the northeast corner of the lodge. Foil was wrapped around the rabbit ear antennas of the TV and the volume was turned up to the point of distortion and we all witnessed something we couldn’t really comprehend. Frankly it was dark and boring and hard to hear and most of us were just eager to get back out into the sunny day and frolic in our silliness and homemade view of life on the moon.

The Moon Landing...Remembered Many of us Prehistorics remember where we were on July 20, 1969. This was the date that Apollo 11 landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the surface. We were at camp, of course. And, in typical camp style, we celebrated the event. ANDY WEED (BS 66-71) was moved to write his memories of that historic event:

It was fantastic. It was authentic. It was timeless. It remains indelibly stuck in my view of the cosmos.

It is how I remember that day. It is how I think of the moon and all those clear, cloudless nights we spent as campers singing and sleeping and dreaming of life a million miles away. Sometimes it almost seems like yesterday. And we remember it now with a sense of nostalgia and longing for simpler times. Like most of my memories of being at Sanborn.

The media blitz this past weekend about the 50th anniversary of the moon landing was a chance for me to reflect on that day 50 years ago. I was at camp and remember the giant parade we had around camp with everyone dressed up like their impressions of what moon creatures looked like. Some of us were able to score on some rolls of aluminum foil that were “misappropriated” by the Dishwashers and we all did our best impressions of what a character from outer space looked like. Bedsheets draped over our shoulders. Antennae created out of foil and wrapped around our heads. Wheelbarrows retooled to look like lunar spacecraft.

The leader of the grand parade was, of course, Jerome, who was decked out in a magnificent costume fitting a Lunar Deity.

How many camp and HTOEC staff and alums can you name?

Pat Perry and Cat Schulz were married in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in North Cheyenne Canyon near Colorado Springs on July 13, 2019. Their romance blossomed on three continents beginning in Greece where they both taught in an American School, moving on to Thailand and then finally returning to the United States in 2014 when Pat accepted the position of director for our High Trails Outdoor Education Center program. If you are counting, you are right…….it was a long, long courtship.

(More Sanborn staff would have been present if Pat and Cat had not inconveniently scheduled their wedding on the Opening Day of Second Session). Cat was beautiful and even Patrick cleaned up pretty well for the late afternoon ceremony. Cat’s father officiated and Pat’s mother, Jan Sanborn VanWest, sang a song that she had written for the occasion. Pat and Cat had written their own vows which were thoughtful, moving and fun.

While the ceremony itself was rather calm and tasteful, things became much more campy at the reception which was held at Phantom Canyon Brewery in Colorado Springs.

Innocent bystanders on the street were surprised to see a large number of wildly costumed individuals entering the restaurant. The party lasted well into the night with lots of camp games and fun moments. Since the Alum News is a family-friendly publication we will not go into great detail.

To our knowledge, the police were not called.

Of course, there were a huge number of Sanborn Camps and HTOEC alums in the crowd including Pat’s parents-Rein and Jan Sanborn VanWest and Dave and Nancy Perry--his siblings—Zak and Holly Cannard and Phil and Katy Perry—his nephews—Lucas and Jacob Perry—his cousins— Rajendra and Kacie Sanborn Awashti and his aunt—Jane Sanborn. The future of Sanborn Western Camps and Colorado Outdoor Education Center is now brighter and more secure because of your thoughtful gifts. We have also planted the seed of a scholarship endowment which signifies our longterm commitment to making the life-enhancing opportunities of camp and outdoor education available to all youth.

Partnered with our annual Sandy and Laura Sanborn Scholarship Fund, the endowment will continue to increase the number of young people we can help well into the future.

As you know, we recently celebrated our 70th anniversary and our goal has been to ensure that Sandy and Laura’s vision lives on, so that our great grandchildren (and their great grandchildren) can feel the wind blowing from the top of Little Blue, pitch a tent in the aspen grove at Bottlegate, and fill their water bottles from the spring tank at Fishcreek.

We know that the opportunities we provide for children are more important in today’s world than they were when the camps were founded. And we believe that these experiences will be even more critical for young people in the future.

his last summer, Big Spring campers had a little more elbow room, High Trails campers had a multi-purpose sportcourt and the High Trails staff had a private, quiet letter writing and technology storage space thanks to the generosity of our Sanborn Alums who donated to the Sanborn Tomorrow capital campaign and to the Program Excellence Fund through Annual Fund Giving.

The Big Spring lodge addition created an additional lodge egress, room for four more tables, and was built in the exact style and spirit of the original lodge. Campers and staff alike appreciated the additional room for serving food, clearing dishes and building community...the Able Waiters could move even FASTER with more space. COEC boardmember, camp alum and current camp parent, Dan Miller, drew up the architectural plans and Doug Page, of Page Construction, was the lead contractor.

Two years ago, Jane Porter-Burton mentioned she thought our campers would enjoy playing a little pickleball, thus the idea for a multi-sport court was born. High Trails campers (and even a few guys from Big Spring) enjoyed playing pickleball, volleyball, and basketball on our nifty, new Sport Game surface sportcourt, built on one of the former tennis courts near Heisler Hall. The adjustable basketball hoops and volleyball/pickleball net makes it easy for staff to use the court for evening cabin time, in-camp activity blocks, or just as a place for girls to practice draining threes and crushing serves. Thank you, Jane, for the terrific idea...we will see you in the kitchen (it’s a pickleball joke).

For those of you who have been on the High Trails staff over the years, you are aware of the Challenge of the Office. Unlike Big Spring, the High Trails office is directly attached to the lodge, which means there are always 2.3 million people (or at least 10-20) moving through the office at all times. In its original form, desks in the tiny office were occupied by Laura, Jane, Carlotta and Virginia-leaving staff to sit on the counter under the window and try to stay out of the way. The “New Office” was built in the mid 80s to accommodate the need for a more quiet space for phone calls and letter writing (it was Laura’s primary office and in a building away from the lodge) and then, in the early 2000s, an addition was built on the north side of the lodge to create more office space and flow. Now, with its recent renovation, direct access to 2 of the 3 main bathrooms, storage for staff technology, program resources, cabinside mailboxes and a cozy sofa that lends itself to open communication, problem-solving and brainstorming...the office can feel more like the kitchen of a non-stop dinner party than a good space for staff members to write letters, look for post-camp housing or be able to chat with a camper who is struggling. The High Trails staff yurt arrived mid-summer, so we are still crafting the myriad ways it can be used--but it has already found use in our HTOEC program as an inclement weather, indoor teaching space.

We appreciate the upgrades to our facilities and are thrilled we can begin working on Ponderosa beginning in November. Thank you so much for your commitment to camp!

Joining the staff of the “Sanborn Alum News” will enhance my resume which also includes being overlooked by the New York Times bestseller list, the high distinction of Pulitzer Prize invisibility, and having written not a single article for the inspiring stories of Reader’s Digest. As a connoisseur and dubious raconteur of the “Sanborn Alum News,” I leapt at the employment opportunity offered by Jane Sanborn for the position of freelance correspondent. The grand salary of $0.0 per word is possible to pass up and yet, I plan to earn every penny. Having maintained a stealthy profile as the subject of camp legends, I am fully inspired to regale the publication with stories of others. In this case the story is about those who drove “The Wrangler Wagon.”

Now, Sandy had “The Thing”, Keith had “The Gemini”, Scott had “The Comet”, and Rick had various vehicles including “The Brat” that once threw its wheel. The Wranglers had “The Wrangler Wagon.” Given that the Wranglers had their four legged transportation, one may inquire as to why those tall heeled booted staff needed motorized transport?

Even with the off road capabilities of the Big Dogs, there are fences to fix which means hauling wire, cattle guards to dig out requiring shovels, bags of grain to move, and such so that a work truck was a necessity in the livestock trade.

The Wrangler Wagon had its own uniqueness as the other vehicles at Camp. A (I’m guessing here) forties era International step side truck; it was light tan or buff color with a high cab, large straight up windscreen, rounded raised hood, and a narrow bed in the back to fit between the step sides. The top rail of the truck’s bed is bent to a thirty degree angle and curled round for the smooth outer edges. When a Wrangler has a vehicular errand to run such as fetching grain for the horses or medicine from the High Trails Barn’s refrigerator to treat an ailing horse while coordinating what time they were going to the Thunderbird for time off, the Wrangler Wagon may be pressed into service by the Big Spring Wranglers.

ransportation at Camp was usually a fairly simple arrangement. One walked. The one transporting herself or himself slung a daypack over their shoulders with water, a snack of gorp or apple, a warm jacket, and a rain shell and put one foot in front of the other until they arrived at their destination be it High Trails, Big Spring, Potts Spring, or Leo’s.

Having a vehicle to drive for one’s work at Camp elevated one’s movement and status similar to the Plains Indians taming the horse. Those favored by their Camp job to drive was for an essential purpose. Of course Sandy and Rick

When the potential driver opened the door, the first step is to start the truck. This particular truck began with an old school way of turning the key in the ignition on the left side of its big thin cast steering wheel. That turned on the power.

Then, with your left boot, pressed the knob on the floor board to engage the starter. If the battery is charged and the starter is working and the wires are connected, it would start. The only thing is, there is no key.

When one of the vehicles drivers goes anywhere on their important daily missions, anyone else in camp knows where you are and who you are because of the distinctiveness of the truck or automobile. Arriving to the High Trails Barn or any such destination for the designated important errand, it is quite likely that the purpose of your visit may be coordinated with the powers that be, Sandy.

Screeching to a stop beside you, he may ask. If it is such unfortunate timing as to have more than one of you at the High Trails Barn for example, he may reply, “Well, you don’t need all three of you for that. One of you come with me. Bill! Bill Leonard, come with me. I got a job that’ll take fifteen minutes.”

One of the first keyless entry vehicles, the Wrangler Wagon had a little hole in the place the key would go. To turn on the power from the battery, you checked to see if the little stick was there. A wooden stick is inserted in the hole to turn on the power. If not, you had to find one. One on the ground is best because it is dry and harder, the green ones being too soft to hold the turn. A stick key had to be bigger than a match stick and smaller than a pencil and whittled square just right to fit the key hole and turn it. The scientific method of trial and error was useful for this purpose.

Sandy’s watch must have been on Greenwich Meridian Time because fifteen minutes almost always took two or three hours if not all day. The lucky volunteer would follow Sandy to his vehicle, I remember “The Thing”, reminding us of his wise philosophy from the experience of working with such as us,” Ya got one boy, ya got one boy. Ya got two boys, ya got half a boy. Ya got three boys, ya got no boys.” And the fifteen minute timer had begun.

Once the truck is running, it took experience to find the feel for the big steering wheel and adjust the six inches of play that caught the loose front end wheels to guide. Anticipating the wander was quite useful on pot holes and washboard roads to keep the Wrangler Wagon between the ditches.

It’s a philosophy I remembered during my years of teaching.

As many lesson I learned at camp, bouncing along in those old trucks in the fresh air of camp. When Sandy put his big bear hug of an arm around me, I felt special in this world.

His fifteen minutes to get a job done came to mind teaching the history of those Plains Indians. Once in a class with a Ute Indian instructor, he said a fellow asked him once how long it took to tan a hide or fletch an arrow.

The driver had a nice, but springy, bucket seat to steady himself. The passenger did not get bored in his musing out the windscreen as the truck wandered through its paces. In place of a bucket seat, the passenger’s seat had been removed and in its place sat a small wooden kitchen chair. It was a good truck for the Wranglers because the passenger’s kitchen chair had to be ridden somewhat like a horse swaying and bucking as the truck rocked along the dirt roads.

Interesting yet, fresh air for the passenger came from the floor board which had rusted a hole a little smaller than a manhole cover. So, while the truck bounced along with the kitchen chair swaying, the passenger kept feet spread or braced on the side of the cab, hands on the dashboard or ceiling to travel along in modern convenience.

He replied, “As long as it takes to get done.”

I guess that’s another way of saying fifteen minutes. When ya got a job to do, it takes until ya get it done. I remembered that wise life lesson in my teaching career, too, and other places in life. Those old trucks, Sandy Sanborn, and the wide open spaces of Camp just travelled down the road with me.

On a rainy day, the passenger may receive a shower from the floorboard when a puddle filled the pothole. Rain brought a special challenge for the Wrangler Wagon. With pneumatic powered windshield wipers, the engine provided the air push to run the wipers. When the truck went uphill, the engine’s power was used for locomotion and the wipers slowed or stopped if the hill was big enough like up the road across Olin Gulch past the lake toward Witcher’s. It wasn’t rare for the driver to stick his head out the side window with his hat brim pulled down tight against the rain drops to see the road.

I have many memories of being with Carlotta at camp. I remember her reaching into the freezer at the Interbarn to show us the latest roadkill specimen. Not something our mothers had in their suburban freezers! I remember her incredible knowledge about so many things... all passed along without a whiff of pretension. I remember her sweet black dog, Jamaica. But the memory that came up immediately was from a 14,000’ Mountain Climb Overnight. I was maybe 14 years old. We were coming down from the summit of Mt. Democrat, and I started feeling really sick with stomach cramps and pain. Carlotta hung back with me as the others galloped down the mountainside. She was so patient and kind. Eventually I felt better, and she and I slowly walked back down to the van. I have never forgotten her compassion that day.
