Colorado Outdoor Education Center

There are elements of nature to which I am continually drawn—some small and intricate, others vast and awe-inspiring. The moon hanging in the night sky, the delicate details of a snowflake, the way the clouds are never the same, or the unique patterns found on the scales of individual pinecones all invite quiet wonder. This year, witnessing the Northern Lights dance across the sky became a shared highlight for many. It was certainly one for me. I have always associated seeing this phenomenon with a perfectly timed trip to Alaska or Iceland, and yet this year, so many regions across the country were afforded this rare and extraordinary experience.
As humans, we are innately connected to the natural world and instinctively understand the value of time spent in the mountains, along a shoreline, or walking through an open meadow. Yet, too often, we find ourselves living alongside nature rather than truly within it. We live in an age of screens—sharp, focused, and high-resolution—yet our eyes are meant to spend more time taking in broader patterns and sweeping landscapes. When we look at a tree from a distance, we do not see each individual pine needle; when we stand at the base of a mountain, we do not see every rock. What we perceive is the whole. This serves as an important reminder that, while details matter, we must also step back to see the larger picture.
Thank you for your continued support of our programs and facilities. Your friendship and generosity help us remain focused on our mission while creating meaningful opportunities for children and adults to connect more deeply with the natural world. Because of you, we are able to preserve the thoughtful details that make each experience unique while also seeing the bigger picture of the future. Your support ensures that future campers, students, and guests will continue to see themselves as an integral part of a larger whole.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Marable Executive Director, COEC

“The last 30 days have stretched her mind, her heart, and her body in all the best ways. She’s strengthened friendships, made new connections, tested her limits, experienced her true ‘bucket list’ adventures (5 day horse pack trip?! woah!), and got the privilege of being coached and mentored by amazing counselors and wranglers. When she comes home asking, “When can we climb a 14-er, Mom?” and saying things like: “When I’m a wrangler at Sanborn....” we know that camp has had an incredibly deep impact."

Sanborn has already taught me the most important things you need to succeed in life. To always treat others with kindness, respect, and love one another the way we are all meant to.
Even from my first year at Sanborn, I have carried out the things that I have learned into my daily life. I have learnt how to make friends and put myself out there. I have already made a difference in my community by showcasing kindness and projecting it to my peers.
Sanborn will help me make a difference because of the life skills I have learned from being in the back country and the in-camp activities I take part in. All of the things I have participated in and learned from my experiences at Sanborn, I will carry with me my whole life. I love to tell my friends and family all the things I have learned and all the crazy stories from camp, my favorite part of the year. I have taught others the importance of preserving nature and the significance of admiring the beauty of it. I will use the things Sanborn has taught me to make smart decisions about my future and the important decisions leading up to my future.
Sanborn taught me how to ask good questions, but also how to not let questioning things limit what I do. Sanborn has shown me how to live my life to the fullest and have a positive mindset through it all. Because what is a life with a negative mind? I have learned how to be happy and spread the gift of my positive attitude to others. This will help me make a difference by teaching my peers how to be positive and treat others with the kindness they deserve.
Sanborn has shown me how to look at things from a different perspective, how you never know what other people are going through and how even a small smile can brighten their day. These things might not make a big difference in the world, but it will make a big difference to someone else. To someone else who might be struggling to see the good in the world or struggling to have a more positive mindset. The little things I do will slowly make a difference and the example I set for others will help them make even more of a difference!
A big dream of mine is to one day give a life changing speech somewhere in the world, I will use the things Sanborn has shown me to do so. I am so grateful for the experiences and friendships I have made at Sanborn and will continue to make in my next years here as a camper, and then one day hopefully as a counselor. Sanborn has shown me how to not care about other peoples’ opinions and to just live life to the fullest. I am so excited for this summer and to go back to camp and see all my amazing friends!
“Every year I attend, I experience and learn new and different things. The atmosphere is so welcoming that it makes me feel like camp is my second home. The bonds of brotherhood and friendship we create make us feel part of the same community, committed to creating a better world where love prevails.”
- Scholarship Recipient

Dear Friends,
Wow! Once again you have exceeded our expectations! We are incredibly grateful for your generous support in 2025. As you will see throughout this report, your gifts allowed us to provide the camp experience for 60 wonderful young people who attended Big Spring and High Trails last summer with tuition assistance from the Sandy and Laura Sanborn Scholarship Fund. This fund was augmented with the interest from our Scholarship Endowment Fund which you built during our Sanborn 70 Capital Campaign. Having reached its goal of $1,000,000 in 2024, the Endowment is now having a significant impact on the amount of scholarship aid we are able to provide.
Most of these campers will be returning this summer, and, of course, each year we receive new requests. We are happy to announce that we have already committed to provide scholarships for more than 60 campers in 2026. The need continues to grow and you, our alums, camp families, and friends, keep answering in truly heart-warming ways.
Scholarship funds also support students in our High Trails Outdoor Education Center Program. Although these funds are given directly to the schools who identify the students most in need, we know that our grants last year provided full tuition for more than 160 students. Looking ahead to 2026, we have increased the amount we will give to schools by at least ten percent so that every child may attend HTOEC with their classes.
In addition to scholarships, we continue to use the funds you provide to refresh, renovate and rebuild our aging facilities. Last year, your support built a beautiful new washhouse on ABC Ridge at Big Spring. (I know it is kind of strange to call a washhouse “beautiful” but it is nice-looking and very functional.) You also made possible our brand new 4-story treehouse—it actually is beautiful and very fun. Renovations like these reflect the commitment to excellence Sanborn Western Camps and Colorado Outdoor Education Center are known for and we couldn’t do it without you.
In the last couple of years, we have realized that because the facility we have is so large and because programmatic and housing needs are changing, we would be wise to obtain the help of experts to help us plan for the future. In 2025, we began work on a Facility Master Plan with an extremely well-qualified team of architects who specialize in working with camps across the country. They have already made two trips to visit our site and we look forward to continuing this process, confident that it will help us to prioritize our facility needs in the coming years and optimize the use of our resources.
We could not do any of this without your help. Words cannot fully express how much we value your generosity, your partnership and your friendship. Thank-you!
Warm Regards, Jane Sanborn Director of Development
We are grateful to these alums, staff, parents and friends of camp who gave generously to our Annual Fund and the Sanborn 70 Capital Campaign in 2025 and through January 20, 2026.
