Growing up in Albuquerquethe sonofanorthopedicsurgeon, Kyle Altman always hadan interest in amedical career
“I wasnaturally drawntoorthopedics,but triedtokeep an open mind andexplore my options” he said,addingwitha laugh: “Infact, Idid everythingI couldtostayawayfromorthopedics.But Iguess Iloved it toomuch.”
Today, theorthopedicsurgeon specializes in hipand knee replacementswithSportsMedicineAssociates, whichhas sixlocations in theSan Antonioarea.
Before becoming adoctor, however, he wasanaccomplishedsoccerplayer, both in Albuquerqueand at Trinity University,where he wasa pre-med undergraduateand played on the school team
“I wanted to go somewherethat wouldfurther my academic ambitions butwhere Icould also play high-level soccer,”explained Altman. “Trinity checkedboththose boxes.”
Playingbothdefense andmidfield, Altman helped lead Trinitytothe national championship game in 2007 He wasalsoa two-time,first team AllAmerican,twice namedconference defensiveplayerofthe year andan academic All-American
He played soccerprofessionally for five yearsbeforeretiringtoattend medicalschool at theUniversityof TexasHealthScience Center at San Antonio.
Altman acknowledges that his experience as aprofessional athlete helped inform hisdecisiontospecializeinorthopedics
“A lotofpeoplewho go into the fieldtendtohavea sports background,” he said.“They’refamiliarwithbiomechanics, theway thebodyworks.It’s kind of anatural segue. ”
Aftergetting hismedical degree, he joined Sports Medicine Associates in 2023,inpartbecause thegroup’s founder, Dave Schmidt, wasthe Trinity team doctor while he played there.
Atypical dayfor Altman involves workingwithpatientsinboththe office andthe operatingroom.
“I’llsee anywhere between 25 and35 people in clinic andthendotwo to five surgeries,”hesaid.

“Aspickleballhas become increasinglypopular,I’vedefinitelyseen an uptick in wrist, elbowand shoulder fractures,”hesaid. “You need to understand your limitsand do cross training to avoidinjuries.”
Maintainingstrongand healthy legs,for example, will help preventthe tripsand falls that bedevilsomanynew pickleball players.
He also treats alot of patients with arthritisand says thebestway to avoid thecondition,oratleast reduce the pain,istostayactive.
“Exerciseisprobablythe best thing youcan do forthe long-termhealthof your joints andbones,” said Altman who, hasthree children, ages 7years to 20 months,withhis wife Hunter,a pediatrician.“People maythink rest is best,but it’s better to keep moving.”
Thesedays, Altman is sure to take hisown advice,limitinghis soccer playingtokicking theballaroundwith histwo olderkids.
“I no longer play competitively,”he said.“My body can’thandlethatanymore.Thatshiphas sailed.” ★

“I told myself,I’m goingtogive myself oneyearhere,”she said Five yearslater,she’s still caring for SanAntonio’s sickestchildren, with no planstoleave.
“I don’tsee myself moving anywhere anytimesoon,” shesaid.
BalakumarcametoTexas afterstops on theEastCoast:She completedmedicalschool in India, then pediatrics residencyinNew York City anda fellowship in critical care in Miami.
Shechose pediatrics becauseshe likesseeing patients from newborns and toddlerstoteenagers,“almost like you’re growingupwiththem.”
As themedical director of thehospital’spediatric intensivecareunit, Balakumarisseeingchildren—andtheir families— in theirmostchallenging moments.
“Theycomeinextremely sick and fragile andvulnerable,”she said.“You make decisionsina matterofmoments andseconds that change theentire course of achild’s life.”
She’salsofocused on constantly improvingthe care childrenreceive by reviewingdataand implementing changeswithher team
Oneofthose projects is part of a nationwide critical care initiative,aimed at aiding patients’recoveryand transition outofintensive care
“The patientcomes to theICU,and oftentimes we don’tknowhow much life alters aftertheir stay in theICU,” Balakumarsaid. To addressthat, the projectincludesassessing medication, rehabilitationefforts, earlymobility exercisesand othereffortsduringtheir stay that canhelppatientsafter they leave.

“Insimplewords,it’slikea mobile ICU,”she said
An ongoingfocus is workingto transportpatientsthatare usingheartlung machines fora treatmentcalled extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or “ECMO.”
Themachine pumpsblood outside thebodytodothe work of theheart and lungs. Christus is workingtoprovide mobile ECMO —transportingchildren while they’reundergoingthe treatment.
“I’m really excitedfor that to roll out,” Balakumarsaid.
Seeing kids in bedconnected to thosekinds of machines andtubes is “one of thehardest things youcan see, ” shesaid— butinthose moments, she’s oftenthinkingabout theirlives outside thehospitalroom
Parentsoften decorate theirchildren’s roomswithpicturesfromwhen they were healthy, whichserve as a visual reminder of what theICU team is workingtoward.
“Let’s seehow we canget that child better, to getthatsmile back again, so they cangohomewiththeir family,” Balakumarsaid. “That’sthe onething that keepsmeand allofmyteammembers going, is workingtowardgetting that child home.” ★
