FROM THE
HEAD OF SCHOOL EST. 1886
Dear San Antonio Academy Community, During the 2025–2026 school year, San Antonio Academy celebrated 140 years of educating Academy Boys and developing “Texas Gentlemen.” Growing scholars, leaders, young men of integrity, and brothers on whom others can rely requires an exceptional school, and an exceptional school is created when the school community has a deep and abiding commitment to the mission, vision, and motto. We are profoundly grateful for the generations of families, educators, alumni, and friends who have shaped our community, sustained our mission, supported our vision, and inspired us to always strive to be the best we can be.
WHAT’S INSIDE
This year’s philanthropy report is both a celebration of our history and a reflection of the extraordinary generosity that continues to propel our school forward.

CELEBRATING OUR
FACULTY RETIREMENTS
Amalia Aguilar
AMALIA AGUILAR 2nd GRADE TEACHER ASSISTANT What has your time at SAA meant to you?
I never felt like I was working. I felt like a child that never grew up. I have had so much fun learning from our teachers and staff. I hope that my enthusiasm showed the children that learning is so much fun.
MATT VELDT 5th & 7th GRADE HISTORY TEACHER / 8th GRADE P.E. COACH Can you share a story about a student who experienced a significant breakthrough or “aha!” moment?
Back in 1992, when we had just started the lacrosse program at SAA, one of my 8th grade students, Nicholas, decided to join the team. I had my doubts—he hadn’t tried out for soccer, struggled with basketball in PE, and wasn’t allowed to wrestle. But Nicholas proved me completely 4
wrong. Through determination and hard work, he became an accomplished player at SAA and went on to start on his high school’s state championship lacrosse team. His journey has always reminded me how powerful perseverance can be. What have been some of the most rewarding moments for you as faculty?
Over the years, one of the most meaningful experiences has been teaching and coaching the sons and nephews of former students from the 1980s and 90s. Moments like those bring everything full circle and highlight what I’ve always believed about SAA: it’s not just a school, it’s a family. Can you describe an experience that you are providing in the classroom that you consider exceptional and/or intentionally crafted for boys?
What makes our school exceptional is our commitment to bringing learning to life. While teaching Texas history, I realized students needed to experience it firsthand, so we began
Matt Veldt
getting out into the city to explore the San Antonio Missions—a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and an integral part of our state’s story. That idea has grown into an annual 7th grade bicycle trip, where students visit four of the missions and the acequia along the San Antonio River. It’s a tradition that turns history into something students can see, feel, and remember.
ELIZABETH SNOW LIBRARIAN In what ways has the school community supported your work?
The school community has been a tremendous source of support. Our fall and spring book fairs would not be possible without the dedicated help of our parent volunteers. Their enthusiasm is invaluable. The school also makes sure we feel appreciated throughout the year, with a birthday gift and a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week, which makes a big difference to morale and reminds us we’re part of a valued team.

What have been some of the most rewarding moments for you as faculty?
One of the most rewarding moments for me is simply watching the boys’ excitement when they visit the library and check out a book they are eager to read. Just this morning, I overheard a Pre-K boy tell his friend, “Today is library day, I can’t wait to get a new book.” Can you describe an experience that you are providing in the classroom that you consider exceptional and/or intentionally crafted for boys?
Our Makerspace Elective is intentionally crafted for boys. We provide a weekly challenge that combines hands-on, problem-based learning. The boys typically work in pairs, which encourages collaboration and communication while appealing to their innate desire to build and create. This approach allows them to explore
new ways of thinking and problem-solving in a dynamic, team-oriented environment. What advice would you give to a new teacher starting at this school?
My advice to a new teacher would be to embrace the boys’ energy and curiosity. This is a place where we celebrate a boy’s innate desire to be active, and if you can channel that energy into meaningful learning, you’ll be a great success. It’s also important to remember that every boy has a story, and once you find the right book for him, you can open up a world of possibilities.

WALKER L. KINDERGARTEN Walker shows up every day to class with a smile on his face and is eager to learn. He is inquisitive, thoughtful, and shows admirable perseverance when presented with a challenge. Walker is proud to show off his work but when things get tricky for him, he is quick to say, “That’s okay. It’s just a little mistake!” Walker is kind to his fellow students, encouraging others whilst learning alongside them. Walker is a great example of scholarship, even as one of the youngest boys on campus.
CARDO L. KINDERGARTEN HUNTER N. PRE-KINDERGARTEN Hunter consistently demonstrates honesty, kindness, and respect in all that he does. He approaches each day with a genuine desire to do his best and to grow, always striving to be the best version of himself. He is a natural encourager, lifting up his classmates with kind words and thoughtful actions. His caring heart is evident in the way he treats others—he truly loves and values everyone around him, making him a joy to have in the classroom.
8
While he excels in many areas, Cardo shines brightest in his unwavering integrity. Even at the Kindergarten level, Cardo demonstrates a rare maturity in his character. He consistently chooses to do the right thing, not for the sake of a reward or because a teacher is watching, but because he has a genuine “servant heart.” He treats both his peers and faculty with a high level of respect and impeccable manners. Cardo’s influence is felt through his quiet leadership and kindness. He frequently goes out of his way to help others, showing a deep sense of brotherhood by supporting his classmates without being asked. His habit of doing the right thing without reminders serves as an inspiration to his peers, proving that leadership starts with the simple, honest choices we make every day. He is a shining example of what it means to live out our school’s values from the very beginning of his SAA journey.

NELSON P. 1ST GRADE Deserving of this recognition in the area of scholarship and integrity, Nelson is an all round great student. He works hard, is kind to everyone, and always willing to help anyone. Nelson is a true example of an Academy boy and many boys look up to him. He is always doing the right thing even when no one is looking.
LUKE G. 2ND GRADE Luke’s thoughtfulness, optimism, and pursuit of excellence is remarkable for a Primary School boy. Whether it’s his uniform, classwork, interactions with his peers, or the small kind gestures that may go unnoticed in a classroom full of boys, he upholds our school motto with a strong sense of responsibility. He often recognizes the strengths in others, compliments them and offers encouragement during challenging moments. His hard work and consistent effort motivates his peers, which is why he is such an amazing Academy role model.

CHRISTIAN S. 4TH GRADE Deserving of this recognition in the area of leadership, Christian sets a fantastic example for all those around him. He always uses his best manners and goes out of his way to do the right thing. He often offers to help before he has been asked. He is conscientious about his work and truly strives to give his best. He is reliable, trustworthy and honest.
JOSEPH S. 4TH GRADE Deserving of this recognition in the areas of integrity, brotherhood, leadership and scholarship, Joseph stands out through his phenomenal attention to detail and a “quiet strength” that anchors his P.E. class. He is a great student-athlete who grows more skilled every day, yet his true impact lies in his respectful demeanor and the steady, confident influence he has on those around him. By leading through example rather than volume, Joseph serves as a remarkable role model and a brother who makes his entire class and community better just by being in the room.
10
GALT S. 4TH GRADE Galt is defined by his vibrant energy and boundless curiosity. He operates at “full throttle” throughout the day, bringing an intensity to everything he does—whether he is exploring new concepts through a thousand and one questions, engaging in spirited competition, or bringing joy to those around him. While Galt is extraordinary in many respects, his genuine concern for others truly stands out. His deep empathy is a gift appreciated equally by his younger brothers, his peers, and the adults in his life.
BEAU S. 5TH GRADE Since 2nd grade, Beau has shown incredible dedication to scholarship, and improving his reading and writing skills. He is a natural competitor who challenges himself in every environment, from the dugout to the classroom. He is a devoted brother to his friends who takes his schoolwork seriously. He has become a truly confident leader who steps up to encourage younger students who may be struggling with their own confidence in the program.

JACOB W. 6TH GRADE Jacob exemplifies leadership both on and off the tennis court. A highly ranked and talented player, he contributes significantly to SAA through his skill and success in competition. However, his greatest impact may be the way he invests in his teammates. Despite never missing a practice, Jacob spends much of his time coaching newer players rather than focusing on his own game. He leads drills, teaches technique and strategy, and encourages others’ growth. Thanks in large part to his mentorship, several players have progressed from learning the basics of tennis to winning competitive matches. Through his selfless dedication to his teammates, Jacob is building a lasting legacy for Wildcat tennis.

T exemplified brotherhood and leadership in his work with Echo Company. He cheers on the little guys during challenges, sets a positive example of respectful behavior to teachers, and is patient and kind with the boys who need his help. He stepped in to lead the “How to tie a tie” activity on the day the Squad Leader was out. He saved the day and was encouraging and helpful to the younger boys. It is clear that his fellow Echo team members respect him, and his leadership of the Company.
ROBERT A. 7TH GRADE Robert sets a positive example for others through his strong work ethic, integrity, and willingness to help those around him. He consistently gives his best effort, approaches every task with responsibility, and can be counted on to follow through on his commitments. During group projects, he is a supportive teammate who readily assists others, helps keep the group focused, and contributes to a collaborative environment. GRANDPARENTS AND GRANDFRIENDS:
CELEBRATING THE GENERATIONS THAT SHAPE OUR BOYS San Antonio Academy students welcomed some of their most favorite people into their school lives during the annual Grandparents and Grandfriends Day celebration. Hosted on campus on Friday, Nov. 21, the day opened with a convocation in the Bondurant Field House and Fine Arts Building. Second graders set the tone with a joyful performance of “We Are Family,” followed by student reflections on the Pillars of an Academy Boy from Vihaan S. on Scholarship, Leonard P. on Leadership, Mac O. on Integrity, and Robert C. on Brotherhood. “I thank the SAA teachers for teaching us to be honest,” said Mac. “They trust us with big opportunities like leadership projects and special roles. With a spirit of gratitude and a firm sense of tradition, San Antonio Academy’s Class of 2026 was formally inducted into the ranks of alumni during the annual Alumni and 8th Grade Luncheon. The gathering took place on Monday, April 13, at The Argyle, where generations of Academy men assembled for an afternoon marked by fellowship, reflection, and enduring connection. Alumni representing graduating classes from 1951 to 2025 joined current students, creating a meaningful bridge between past and present. Conversations carried the shared experiences that define an Academy education, reinforcing the lifelong bond of brotherhood that unites each graduate. During the program, each member of the Class of 2026 received an Academy alumni pin. This meaningful tradition serves as a lasting symbol of their connection to the school and to one another as they prepare to carry The Academy’s values forward. The luncheon was generously underwritten by Triana and Brandon Grossman ’92 and included a special presentation by the Alumni Association
