I believe one of the greatest benefits to outdoor learning is the opportunity to provide space for boys to grow and foster friendships. Over time, those friendships develop into what we refer to as a “Bond of Brotherhood.” We recognize how important it is to grow and nurture these friendships, so we’ve focused on adding opportunities for our boys to “get outside” more.

WHY I TEACH

Recently, Col. (Ret.) Steve Marshall teamed up with Coach Mike Heineman to implement the “Company Challenge” where P.E. and the Military Leadership Program meld outdoor activities that teach both team and individual efforts to build a sense of esprit de corps. The “Outdoor Leadership Program,” a new elective instructed by Leon McNeil, is another opportunity for boys to participate in meaningful outdoor activities that also serve to further strengthen their friendships.

Teachers also have a role in nurturing friendships by instilling kindness and empathy. These character traits have been a part of our school’s culture for decades. In fact, being kind is so instrumental to The Academy’s core values that it’s in our motto: BE HONEST. BE KIND. BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE. By establishing the “Wellness Program” years ago, SAA recognized that you can teach boys to be kind by equipping them with age-appropriate social/ emotional learning (SEL) tools so they will grow to be thoughtful young men. A new method in the program’s toolkit to support SEL is the recent addition of the outdoor “Equine Program.” The pilot program will work with 6th graders during the 2019-20 school year. There is a long list of Academy graduates who grew to be thoughtful, honorable men. As a history buff, I was amazed to learn about Louis Jordan Class of 1911. While he’s known for his athleticism as a legendary Texas Longhorn football player, I read that his selfless service to our country inspired the establishment of SAA’s military program, now in its 100th year. I hope you also learn new things about SAA in this latest issue of Bond of Brothers. The pages give us a glimpse into Academy life: past, present, and future—a future that will be filled with long lasting friendships.

WELCOME Kimberly Dunn, Associate Head of School Kimberly Dunn joined the San Antonio Academy team as its new Associate Head of School in June 2019. Kimberly is a highly qualified and experienced independent school administrator and teacher, who comes to us from Saint Francis Episcopal School in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Dunn’s role as the Associate Head of School, in collaboration with the Head of School, ensures that San Antonio Academy’s mission, values, and vision come to life each and every day. Mrs. Dunn’s main responsibilities will be overseeing the school’s academic programs and providing support and supervision for our faculty. “I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of San Antonio Academy, a historic school which recognizes the different learning styles of boys, and its mission to focus on providing an environment to create a foundation just for them. As an administrator and teacher from an independent school, I have always been fascinated with the different gender-specific learning styles and techniques. Another reason I was drawn to SAA is because of its motto to ‘Be honest. Be kind. When I was in the 5th grade, a beloved relative of mine opened up her own preschool just a few blocks from my home. I vividly remember climbing the stairs to her classroom I IMMEDIATELY FELT A for the first time and CONNECTION TO THIS being struck with “MAGICAL PLACE”—A awe and wonder—the PLACE WHERE BOYS smell of fresh crayons, the brightly colored COULD GROW, A bulletin boards, the PLACE OF JOY… miniature tables and chairs. Walking into her classroom that day was like walking into my future. Even though I was only 10 years old at the time, I could “see” my older self—in that very room—teaching my future students. It was at that moment that I realized my destiny, my calling…I was going to be a teacher! From that point on, I focused much of my energy on fulfilling that dream. Throughout high school and college, I mentored and tutored younger students, I enrolled in elective classes focusing on childhood development, and I even used school holidays to volunteer at a local daycare center. I craved any opportunity I could find to sharpen my skills and to achieve my goals. Eventually, the day finally came that I walked into my very own classroom. I was so young at the time. And though that was long ago, I will never forget the faces of those little 3rd graders in that rural Pennsylvania town, the town in which I was born and raised. These students were my students. They were entrusted to me—to care for them, to treasure them, and to impart knowledge upon them. Shortly thereafter, an impending marriage led me to San Antonio, where my life took root next to the iconic oak tree at San Antonio Academy. I remember that day as if it were just yesterday. I immediately felt a connection to this “magical place”—a place where boys could grow, a place of joy, and a place I would call my second home. A new chapter to my destiny began under those sprawling branches. Here I am—19 years later—as happy and fulfilled as ever, both professionally and personally. I don’t go to work every day; I go to school! I get to greet little boys with great big smiles. I get to inspire them to be their best. I get to watch them grow by leaps and bounds. I get to teach!

I eased into the teaching profession and almost accidentally bumped into San Antonio Academy, and I am grateful for both. History has always been interesting to me and from an early age I wanted to know the details of the backgrounds of historical figures explained. From Davy Crockett to Robin Hood to Zorro, I wanted to know the where, when and why of these and other notable figures. What was in their pasts, and what were the circumstances of the times and places where they lived that made them who they were? At one point, when I knew enough to do the explaining, I discovered I enjoyed it, hoping others found what I was saying as interesting I TEACH BECAUSE WE NEED as I did. And TO REMEMBER THE NOBLE then it took on AND YET IMPERFECT PAST a measure of IN ORDER TO CREATE THE importance. BEST FUTURE POSSIBLE… Today, far too often, far too many people from all areas of our society think only of the present—and perhaps a little of the immediate future—but seldom of the past. I try to make what has happened as important as what will happen, to give the past meaning, relevance and, hopefully, an element of interest. I teach because we need to remember the noble and yet imperfect past in order to create the best future possible, and we need that perhaps more now than ever before. I do that because the future is coming, ready or not. I do that because, as the saying goes, "life is what happens to you while you're making different plans" and I want to have my students prepared for whatever comes their way. I get to see the future taking shape before me in my classroom. And yes, I still show slides on a Kodak Carousel projector. And my students love being a part of that.

I began my teaching career when I was 6 or 7. My younger sister was my first student, although a reluctant one. All throughout my school years, I admired my teachers and enjoyed learning. Many of them were nuns from teaching orders. Contrary to popular belief, my school experiences with the Sisters were positive ones. When I started my college courses, becoming a teacher was the natural way to go. I didn’t have a head for business nor did I like the environment of the business world. I wanted to emulate the great teachers I had experienced.

I teach because I want to provide children with a positive male figure. Some may already have one or more, while others may not have any. Even though they may be intimidated by math, I want students to understand its importance in our everyday lives. Yes, there may be challenges with each new equation, but I enjoy helping them conquer those obstacles to position them for success when they grow up.

It was during my time in middle school that I was able to experience teaching in a single gender classroom. My husband attended an all-boys high school and I attended an all-girls high school, so the concept was not foreign to me. I taught middle school girls in the morning at Mt. Sacred Heart Girls School, and in the I LOVED OBSERVING afternoon I walked down AND LEARNING the street to teach middle WHAT WAS school boys at Mt. Sacred DEVELOPMENTALLY Heart Boys School. What APPROPRIATE FOR a great experience! BOYS THIS AGE. It was nearly 20 years ago, after many years of teaching in co-ed classrooms that a former colleague encouraged me to apply at San Antonio Academy. Walking on campus for my interview felt like déjà vu. It was a long-established, private all boys’ military school, much like Mt. Sacred Heart. After interviewing I thought, “This is a place where I can teach until I retire.” I didn’t realize at the time how much I would enjoy 5th graders after having taught middle school for 17 years. I loved observing and learning what was developmentally appropriate for boys this age. Long before Dr. Gurian came to visit our school, my fellow teachers and I would discuss how boys learned differently than girls, how differently they reacted to certain situations, and how differently they responded to instruction and assignments. It has been fascinating. My joy comes from the boys who move on to the middle school grades but still give me a smile and say, “Hi, Mrs. Douglass,” as we pass each other in the hall or on the stairs. And when they return to visit The Academy after graduating, it makes my day when they stop in to say hello. This is why I teach.

San Antonio Academy has been a part of my life since the age of nine. As a student here, I learned more life lessons than I can count and had some of the best teachers that anyone could ask for. The culture was something that I always appreciated. My teachers were always smiling and willing to go the extra mile to help with anyone who was struggling. I always saw people with smiles on their faces and it felt like a home away from home. Some of my best friends went to school here with me, including all four of the groomsmen at my wedding. Having friendships that last that long and stay as strong as they were in the beginning is a rare thing. I have been blessed with the opportunity to teach at The Academy. I get to share those same feelings that I had as a student with the boys. I even get to work with some of the teachers that I had as a student. As I enter my 11th year of teaching, I can say that I have worked with, and taught some amazing people. I look forward to working with the boys at SAA every day and I cannot wait to see the men that they become. My only hope is that I can share the joys that I had as a student with them and help them to understand that math doesn’t need to be intimidating. It is not always going to be easy, but it will always be important. I couldn’t ask to be in a better place to work.

NEW OUTDOOR INITIATIVES ALSO STIMULATE SEL GROWTH

As Academy boys outgrow recess (but do they really?), SAA identifies other areas in the curriculum to get them outdoors to help stimulate key SEL components such as self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decisionmaking, self-management, and relationship skills—or what The Academy recognized decades ago as “leadership skills.”

Getting outdoors is such a simple, but effective remedy for students to get a much-needed break from their indoor classroom setting. In outdoor settings, children are more motivated to work together in groups, which can improve their social skills. They learn to manage conflicts, communicate, and cooperate with their peers in a more effective manner. And, while being outdoors naturally inspires kids to be more physically active, it also optimizes a child's social, emotional, and cognitive development. Whether at recess on the playground, leadership activities on Frost Field, or adventures that take boys off campus, San Antonio Academy recognizes the value of outdoor learning. BENEFITS INCLUDE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)

For the Primary School boys, recess is hands-down one of their favorite times of the day to get outside. Running, jumping, climbing, and sliding are all a part of play to them. They may not realize it—or at this stage in their development care—but they are also attaining behavioral skills. “Recess is a natural opportunity to put social/emotional learning into practice,” says SAA’s School Counselor, Theresa Moore, adding, “It requires the regular, repetitive, patterned practice of specific behavioral skills that develop the necessary emotional and social skills that shape emotional intelligence.”

For Col. (Ret.) Steve Marshall, the “Company Challenge” was specifically created with the SEL concepts in mind. He says, “Partnering with the Physical Education Department, each Company goes head-to-head in events that stress leadership, followership, and physical development… Its purpose is also to instill Company spirit and team work by using various competitive modes to achieve this.” The new initiative takes place three times-a-year in the big, wide-open space of Frost Field, a perfect venue for cadets to burn “boy-energy” while simultaneously gaining a sense of esprit de corps. Across from Frost Field and over in Charlotte Hall, 8th Grade Science Teacher, Jennifer Hayes, conducted her own outdoor experiment. After weeks of research and engineering, she took her boys to the Alamo Heights swimming pool for the first “Cardboard Box Regatta” to test if their vessels were indeed seaworthy. The fun physics activity was a true team building experience and created an instant Academy tradition. Amazing what getting outdoors and adding water can do for a school! If you wonder if these activities may usurp classroom time, just ask Tanya, who will chalk up her 20+ years teaching firstgraders as testament to the benefits of boys getting more outdoor time, “…Yes, they are having fun, however, they are also preparing their minds and bodies for the magic that will happen within the confines of the classroom walls as well.” So the next time you see our students whirling around at recess, or in formation on Frost Field passing along a waterfilled bucket, realize that there is something more intentional taking place—and it has a lot to do with the outdoor space.

To find a dizzying example of repetitive movements that Theresa refers to, look no further than the new “Spinning Tree” installed as part of the playground upgrades. “Spinning in circles is one of the best activities to help children gain a good sense of body awareness,” says 1st Grade Teacher, Tanya Weis. “Through spinning, they figure out where their 'center' is and then are more able to coordinate movement on the two sides of their body. Rather than making children susceptible to falls, spinning actually improves a child’s surefootedness, and it also improves their ability to concentrate once they’re back in the classroom.”

DEVELOPING A CULTURE OF KINDNESS AT SAA FOSTERS HAPPINESS IN OUR BOYS, OUR STAFF AND OUR FAMILIES. It’s the second week of school, and the After School Care program is in full swing on our playground. A group of 2nd graders are playing their well-loved game of Speedball. A very new and nervous Pre-K boy is observing them with admiration. A swift 2nd grader catches the ball and runs to score. As he’s running down the field he notices this little boy watching him. He pauses the game, and invites the new and nervous Pre-K boy to join in. Understandably, this boy is timid, but he joins the group. No words need to be spoken to the rest of the boys. It is understood what needs to happen next. The ball is passed to the Pre-K player, and his teammates guard him as he runs to the other end of the field to score. His opponents are in on it too, but don’t let him know that. The pride in his eyes is radiant, but the happiness that beams from the 2nd grader is even stronger.

their teachers in class, or from the Primary School Advisor during a guidance lesson. Kindness promotes compassion, a sense of belonging and happiness. The buddy system we have at SAA between the primary school boys and the upper school boys is one of a kind. The joy and excitement you see during one of our many “buddy” events is contagious. Pairing the younger boys with the older guys provides that valuable opportunity to teach and model exactly what it means to be honest, be kind, and the best you can be. The 1st grade Bike

Race provides a perfect example. The 7th grade boys traditionally serve as the older helpers. Witnessing these moments of true kindness that happen naturally is quite emotional. The rallying around a fallen rider to an epic victory for the final winner; it makes for one of our favorite events of the school year.

The 1st Grade Bike Race is a decades-long Academy tradition which provides an opportunity for the younger boys to be mentored by the older guys through teamwork, encouragement, and often, that extra help getting their little buddy over the finish line in the quest for the “Yellow Jersey.”

At San Antonio Academy, kindness matters. Everything we think, say and do affects others, and that is at the core of what we try to teach the boys who attend our school. They hear messages all the time about the importance of kindness through chapel talks from Mr. DuBose, from

As the Primary School Advisor, I wear lots of hats. I might be the person a boy confides in about how he’s feeling that day, a person to check-in or reset with, or to emphasize the important social and emotional skills that are taught in chapel or class each day. I always begin the year with some sort of “Kindness Campaign.” I incorporate books such as A Little Spot of Kindness, by Diane Alber, and I also use positive reinforcement like our “Throw Kindness like Confetti” board, or our “Great Wall of Kindness.” These visuals serve as reminders for the students to spread kindness inside and outside of school. Research shows that performing acts of kindness boosts happiness. Practicing kindness every day creates habits in our boys to treat others with compassion.

#HaircutForKindness was the trending topic last spring when Admissions Director Gary Marvin ’89 asked cadets to heed the call and get a haircut in time for inspection. The participants who used the hashtag and posted a picture of their haircut to social media received an extra dessert at the café. What a fun way to motivate boys to look sharp while reminding them to also be kind.

According to Thomas Lickona, the author of How to Raise Kind Kids, acts of kindness, big and small, keep us all going. Some are a common and natural occurrence, such as holding the door open for someone, but others take courage. Those acts of kindness need to be nurtured and taught. Our goal at SAA is to offer these messages to our boys at every opportunity. Developing a culture of kindness at SAA fosters happiness in our boys, our staff and our families. There is a feeling that hits you when you step foot on this campus. It’s an overwhelming feeling of “home.” Kindness matters.

Guest Author Kathryn Otoshi visited SAA last fall to engage all age groups and to send a positive message about uplifting others’ spirits by being kind. A “Spirit Bird” art installation was created with each student’s hand print ‘feather’ to symbolize his commitment to treat others with kindness.

Last year’s Kinder Community Service Project spread kindness to the soldiers serving in Syria by sending each of the 22-member 1/3 Regiment Calvary a care package accompanied with a hand-made thank you card. SURVEY SAYS… Parents Club conducted their first survey to seek community input about the organization.

TEAMWORK Six committees ran a small army of dedicated chairpersons and committee members covering “all things SAA.”

ONE BIG FAMILY: 70% of Academy families joined the Parents Club organization.

Moments in SAA Sports History 1800s

The “SAA” letters were intertwined to create one of the first known insignias to represent San Antonio Academy, found here adorning the athletic team flag.

Located at North Flores at the time, SAA enjoyed a privilege shared by no other school in Texas: that of being across the street from San Pedro Park, which was attributed to Academy boys’ good health because of its athletic attractions, its fresh air, and its swimming pool, the largest outdoor, artesian swimming pool in the state.

1926

In spirit of the brand, a fight chant was composed: Academy Blue! Academy White! Academy, Academy, Fight! Fight! Fight! That was the prayer on the football field, urging our warriors to lead our colors onward to victory. The Blue represents our courage and fearlessness to fight for the right cause and the White stands for our “open and above board” way of doing things.

1894

The first game of modern football in San Antonio was played between The Academy and West Texas on March 10, 1894, resulting in a victory for our team of eleven with a score of 12 to 10. Franz C. Groos (Class of 1894) made the very first touchdown for San Antonio Academy’s football team. Among his peers he was the only student to play well enough to make "Varsity Scrub" status at Princeton.

1955

L.R. (Dilly) Burke came to SAA to teach civics and history. He distinguished himself as he coached numerous league championship football and basketball teams. Friend of the students, faithful member of the faculty, and outstanding teacher and coach, were just a few phrases that described this man. To honor his legacy, the Coach Burke Cup was created to recognize an upper school student who has excelled in the school’s athletic programs.

1978 1911

Louis Jordan graduated from The Academy and went on to attend the University of Texas, where he became a famous football player; selected as a “Walter Camp All-American” and the only former athlete later inducted in the first class of the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 1957.

SAN ANTONIO ACADEMY OF TEXAS

On October 5th, SAA celebrated the expansion of the Verna McLean Gymnasium with a ribbon-cutting. Among the attendees were Harry Freeman, one of the oldest alums of SAA as a member of the Class of 1905; and Casey Tennyson, one of the youngest kindergarten students at The Academy. The gymnasium would now seat up to approximately 400 spectators.

2001

Jason Conley (Class of 1995) became the first freshman in NCAA history to lead the nation in scoring, averaged 29.3 points per contest, was an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, and led the Southern Conference in steals. In addition to many top honors in his professional career, Jason was the first recipient of SAA’s “Big Brother Award,” saying that “the award has meant more to me than any trophy,” because it was about how he treated the “little guys.”

2007

SAA Museum was founded, which has a dedicated display of athletic items including a vintage football helmet and pads, and clothing donated from James (Jim) Foster Yancy (Class of 1966).

2007

Head Soccer Coach, Brittany Schrader, was part of the Women’s Program that made it to the Elite 8 in 2007, also making it to the NCAA tournament every other year. In the summer of 2012, Brittany played in the WPSL for the Spokane Shine, winning the division.

2009

The Academy’s football program made a historical comeback after ending in the mid-80s.

2015

Coach Leon McNeil called it “the greatest moment in track history,” referring to the day 8th grader Ben Feinstein, double amputee since age two, was joined by his younger brother, Ethan, who ran around the track for four laps with Ben, cajoling and motivating one another along the way. With his newly fitted racing-style prosthetics in place, Ben dashed across the finish line steps ahead of Ethan, with a time of 8:05—shattering his previous personal best by almost a full minute.

2008

Director of Athletics, Coach Mike Heineman, was recognized for basketball fame in the Hoosier state. A group of Indiana sportswriters chose Heineman for the Indiana Silver Anniversary Basketball Team, a distinguished designation in recognition of his leadership on the Connersville High School basketball team. Mike, along with his twin brother, Chris, were the first-ever Silver Anniversary teammates to hail from the same high school.

A furry, spirited Wildcat is spotted on various marketing materials. There is an investigation currently underway by SAA’s biggest fan, Coach “Mac” McClintock, to find out where and when “Mr. Wildcat” will be seen next.

Over the summer of 2018, MOHAN IYENGAR ’12, interned at the Bannerghatta Nature Camp in India, an animal rescue center. During his stay he traveled with and observed a rural vet who was making rounds to various villages to treat animals. Mohan also worked at the Goshala at Shantikunj Dev Sanskriti University in Haridwar. In the spring of 2018, Mohan earned Texas A&M’s designation of “Distinguished Student” out of the 2,037 undergraduate students in the College of Science. The recognition is based on a semester grade point average of 3.50 to 3.74. Now a senior, Mohan is working on his pre-vet studies.

Congratulations to JACK COVERT ’15 and DANIEL COVERT ’15, who are now freshmen at Dedman College of Humanities and Science at Southern Methodist University. On his AP United States History Exam, Jack was one of only 16 students to achieve a top score of 5 (amounting to just 0.003 of 2018 AP United State History Exam takers) from around the world to earn every point possible on the exam.

Congratulations to HARRISON STUART ’15, named co-valedictorian of McCallie School last May. As a gifted speaker at The Academy, it was no surprise to learn that he delivered a moving speech to his Class of 2019 peers. Harrison is now a freshman at Vanderbilt.

Battalion Commander, HASAN EHSAN ’15, gave the first “Senior Chapel Talk” during TMI’s first day of school in 2018. He asked the student body to “look beyond the number and words that characterize people and discover the narratives that show our complexities and similarities. A simple phrase—such as refugee or special needs—is not enough to define the human experience…” Hasan ended his message with a call for respect, support and understanding.

Betty Stieren Kelso Foundation awarded a $16,000 GRANT to SAA for the WWII 2019-20 STUDENT TRIP TO NEW ORLEANS. Joe and Christina Haynes donated $5,000 FOR THE NEW OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. Leon McNeil used the funds to order the equipment needed for the 2019-20 elective classes. SAN ANTONIO ACADEMY OF TEXAS

The Academyâ€™s 2018 Fall Family Fair was a huge success with nearly 1,400 attendees of all ages. With the help of a dedicated team of over 100 parent committee volunteers and another 140 parents filling one-hour shifts, along with 80 community volunteers working over 300 hours, this annual evening of old-fashioned family fun raised over $90,000 in support of SAAâ€™s programs in the 2018-2019 school year.

At the 2019 spring gala, Academy parents, faculty, alumni, grandparents and friends celebrated “A Day in the Life of an Academy Boy.” Over $60,000 was raised to fund various operations and programs of the school. An additional $50,000 was raised in the “Salute SAA” portion of the event which kicked off the funding of a playground upgrade.

Celebrating the CENTENNIAL YEAR of The Academy’s Military Program Louis Jordan graduated from SAA in 1911, and became a top-scoring athlete at the University of Texas. After college, he returned to San Antonio Academy to teach and coach until he became a commissioned officer in the Army. Today, you can visit the Louis Jordan Flagpole at Texas Memorial Stadium, along with his diary in which he wrote “Do the best you can…and then keep on smiling,” just days before a German artillery shell landed in the opening of his dugout, killing him instantly on March 5, 1918—making him the first Texas officer to give the ultimate sacrifice in World War I. Between 1914 and 1918, sixty-six Academy graduates held commissions in the Army or Navy in WWI. Louis Jordan’s death, coupled with the high number of Academy officers, inspired Professor W.W. Bondurant to create the military program for San Antonio Academy in the fall of 1919. He did this in honor of what we lost, and also because of the leadership and preparedness for life that it brings our boys.
