5th Century

1700s

Classical Period

The classical period was dominated by the Natyashastra and Sanskrit drama. Natyashastra is the detailed treatise and handbook on dramatic art that deals with all aspects of classical Sanskrit theatre.

Traditional Period

The traditional period from 1000 C.E. to 1700 C.E. introduced regional languages, improvisation, and a pastoral sensibility to the stage. The plays were presented verbally rather than using written scripts.

1900s

Modern Period

Modern Indian theatre developed during the period of colonial rule under the British Empire, from the mid-19th century until the mid-20th.

The acting became naturalistic and melodramatic in contrast to the stylized techniques of traditional Indian theatre.

Traditional Theatre Art Forms in Kerala

Chavittu Nadakkam Chavittu Nadakam is a highly colorful Latin Christian classical art form originated in Ernakulam district. It is noted for its attractive make-up of characters, their elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and well-defined body movements presented.This art form highly resembles European opera.

Originated during the 16th century AD. This form of play is prevalent among the Latin Christian community.

Kakkarissi Natakkam Kakkarissi Natakam is a folk art form of Kerala state, India, originally from Tamil Nadu. This art form is more popular in the southern regions of Kerala.

It is a form of musical drama and the language used is a blend of Tamil and Malayalam. Play is performed with dance steps and songs.

Kadhaprasangam It combines speaking, acting, and singing to present a story. Costumes, make-up, or settings are not used. The main artist, the Kaadhikan, tells the story, acts and sings with two or three accompanying instrumentalists. A performance typically lasts one-and-a-half to two hours.

“Theatre forms a very important part of India’s history and has donned various hats such as nukkad nataks (street plays) for awareness programmes, protests, radio plays for villages, and is a vessel for the cultural depiction of Indian Heritage. Porattunatakam is a rural art form of folk theatre popular in Palakkad district. An interfusion of dance, music and satire, the performance of this folk drama. The play will be performed specially made stage either in temple premises or in paddy fields.

Purattu Naadakam

Tholpavakoothu is a form of shadow puppetry that is practiced in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, India. It is performed using leather puppets and is performed in temples or in villages in specially built theatres.

Modernist Malayam Theatre Towards the end of the 1960s, there was the emergence of a new style of theatre called Thanathu Nataka Vedi (Indigenous Theatre). The 1970s saw the rise of experimental theatre. The main aim of this movement was to provide theoretical and practical guidance to theatre artistes to give them a direction for development. It was focused on rejecting the influences of western theatre and incorporating more of the folk theatre traditions of Kerala.

Inspired by the Old Guruvayur theatre ashram, where artist of Koodiyatam practice performance and residing. During the morning, the old artist and children practice together and during the evening they invite the public for their performances What they require is a space to perform and practice without distractions. Currently the troupe practice in fields they arrange, This can cause great disturbance to the neighbours when conducting practice sessions at odd timings.

Drama and Acting schools around Trivandrum

1. International Theatre Festival of Kerala

The verse form of this performance pattern which developed slowly was very much based on the vernacular Malayalam with its highly flexible metrical pattern and this was really a major break through in the performance history of Kerala.

Some original plays were based on themes from epics and stories from history.

Thottakkad Ikkavamma's Subhadrarjunam, Natuvattachan Namboodiri's Bhagavadoodu, Kunhikkuttan Tampuran's Lakshmana sangam, Varghese Mapila's Ebrayakutty based on the Old Testament.

International Theatre Festival of Kerala (ITFoK) is an international theatre festival held every year in December in Thrissur city of Kerala State, India. The festival is organised by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and Cultural Department of Government of Kerala. The festival was started in 2008. The festival usually conducted on the 2nd week of January and plays along for 15 days. International plays and regional talents are recognised duing this platform and awarded for their expertize.

2. Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy is located in Thrissur city, of Kerala, in India. It was established on 26 April 1958, inaugurated by then Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. On 27 April 2017, The Academy announced awards for various fields like music, dance, theatre and traditional art forms for the year 2016.

3. Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship The Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship is an honour presented by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, an autonomous organisation for the encouragement, preservation, and documentation of the performing arts of Kerala, set up by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Kerala.

Instituted in 1972, the fellowship are given to outstanding artistes who have contributed to the performing arts in the state.

They will learn how to sit quietly, respect others, and pay attention. Plays and musicals illustrate many different lessons. It is a great way to be exposed to literature.

Drama Therapy is an active, experiential approach to facilitating change. Through drama, the depth and breadth of inner experience can be actively explored and interpersonal relationship skills can be enhanced. A drama therapist first assesses a client's needs and then considers approaches that might best meet those needs. Drama therapy can take many forms depending on individual and group needs, skill and ability levels, interests, and therapeutic goals.

Types of Theatres Proscenium stages

Guangzhu Opera House

Proscenium stages have an architectural frame, known as the proscenium arch, although not always arched in shape.

Their stages are deep and sometimes raked, meaning the stage is gently sloped rising away from the audience.

End stage theatre

The thrust stage at the University of Kent.

Thrust stages As the name suggests, these project or ‘thrust’ into the auditorium with the audience sitting on three sides. Such stages are often used to increase intimacy between actors and the audience.

End stage theatres are those that have an audience on only one side. Such stages are most often rectangular or square, but they can be triangular or take a variety of irregular shapes.

Promenade theatre is when the audience move from place to place during the performance.

Immersive theatre is more about exploration than ambulation.

These are flexible performance spaces which when stripped to their basics are a single room painted black, the floor of the stage at the same level as the first audience row.

Open air theatres These are outdoor theatres that do not have a roof, although sometimes parts of the stage or audience seating will be covered.

These stages may make use of the natural light as it changes during the day, particularly sunset.

Environmental theatre

Arena theatre Arena is also known as theatre-in-the-round staging.

Arenas are ancient of course, but drama in-the-round performed for an audience surrounding the stage is largely a 20th-century American development.

Promenade theatre

Klemet Environmental Theater

A branch of the New Theatre movement of the 1960s that aimed to eliminating the distinction between the audience's and the actors' space. Site-specific theatre is usually performed in a non-traditional theatre space.

Traverse theatre A traverse stage is long and narrow with the audience sitting on either side, like a catwalk. As with theatre in the round, the audience can see each other.

Control room A room, usually at the rear of the auditorium, from which lighting, sound, and other control equipment is operated during the performance

Orchestra pit A depressed floor area immediately downstage of (or partly under) the apron, where the orchestra plays during performances. The orchestra pit is often equipped with a lift or platforms to raise the floor level to form an extension of the audience seating area or a stage extension.

Soil Type Laterite soil layer that is rich in iron oxide and derived from a wide variety of rocks weathering under strongly oxidizing and leaching conditions. It forms in tropical and subtropical regions where the climate is humid. When manured and irrigated, some laterites are suitable for growing plantation crops like tea, coffee, rubber, cinchona, coconut, arecanut, etc. Laterite soil are commonly used as road pavement materials to provide a better sub base, gravel for roads and base materials.

The university complex is generaly crowded in the morning hours and the oposite bus stop helps in the student traffic flow.

The street becomes quitter and only has the fast moving vehicular traffic as the major activity on the streets.

After the working hours the street has no activity expect the street vendors along the road. The traffic flow is moderate.

The dense vegetation acts as a buffer for the noise from the road for noise sensitive blocks, like childrens and differently abled theatre spaces.

The flat lands are situated on a lower hight from the rest of the site, welcoming the winds into the valley and the thus compliment the build.

The Open spaces can be zoned around the areas that have the most shadow dense for comfort of people.

The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, is India’s premier cultural institution. Inaugurated in 1969, it was the first multi-venue, multi-genre cultural centre in South Asia. NCPA hosts more than 700 events each year.

The accomodation and rehersal facilities for the artist are provided within the theatre complex. The NCPA apartments is one of the luxurious buildings in mumbai. The Tata Theatre also has a Sea view point within the building.

A 200-seat auditorium built around a full-thrust stage, Jagriti is fully equipped to cater to both artistes and audience. The main stage is designed for intimate performances, with adjoining spaces for informal lectures and gatherings, and an attached restaurant. Main structure uses concrete, steel materials, glass, terracotta roofing system apply to the accumulate energy technology, the parapet plus ceiling system uses the hollow pipe concrete reduces heat radiation in summer.

The design of the catwalk is taken in a curved form above the seating space to adjust and provide adequte lighting to all parts of the theatre.

The open air stage is used for small gaterings and talk shows. It is directly seen from the entrance and natural light highlights its position. There is a small cafe opposite the stage.

The small theatre is acoustically treated to avoid the use of microphones for talk shows. The curved seating space makes it comfortable for all to directly view and hear the people.

Horizontality Population density of the NH The goal is to welcome the crowd into the site. To create a user friendly plaza that helps people connect with eachother and spend their free together.

Vegetation fence The vegetation that run around the site act as a natural fence and the functions are settled within.

A curved roof defines the build shape and creats a sense of attraction. It unites the two build spaces together and the defines the void between them.

All the blocks overlook a green court and the spaces encourges transperancy between them. The courts are connected and there is visual connectivity between all spaces.

The circulation is connected within many elements of interest along the route. The choice is given to the person to walk along the plaza and explore all.

A same plinth runs along the plaza and buildings.

Flowing Spaces Layered Space The level difference segregates the space into different factions for multiple uses. The stairs acts as the divider between spaces.

The roof and floor define the space differently using variations along its way creating drama.

Movement in Library

The Library space is elevated and made to stand in the inbetween space between both the blocks. The library emphasis the horizontality of the structure as it is the first visible element when entering the main court. The arrangement of shelfs in the Library segregate spaces into various fragments of use and provide some level of privacy between each.

The library is lifted off the ground to create a smooth pedestrian flow between both courts, to enable visual connectivity but also act as a transition.

Usage of Space The interconnected courts between the buildings are designed to function as a public plaza at all times. It is used by everyone equally and encourages the activities of the centre.

Traditional Indian Theatre Glassbox invites light ito the chamber that symbolise the light in the journey of theatre.

The glory days is symbolised by walking up the ramp that showcases the betterment of theatre during the age and transition to modern period.

A static room with no windows or light input to show how theatre has stopped florishing at this phase. A small claustrophobic room to show the dminishing relevance of theatre at the current scenario.

During Show timing When the screening or major theatre shows are put up for the public, the plaza as a common prefunctional area of the theatre where the audience can spend their time before and fater the show.

During ITOF Festival days During the festival days the plaza becomes a space for interaction between experts and audience, for stalls and entertainment activities to take place.

The Intermediate block stands on waffle slab structural layout a column free parking spcae below.

The balcony above the structure is also open to the sky and conncts the school to the theatre block.

Connect the blocks with a intermediate volume that stands between the school and theatre block, The roof of the block acts as a terrace that overlooks the courts. The connecting volume also acts as a link between the school and library.

All three private functions sit under one roof create aflow of space and connection between them. This gives the cognitive abiity to create this as a seperate private zone.

Each level of the canteen ends at a different point that helps to attain visual continuum and creates a dynamic space .

During Speech The Agora design encourages interaction with its inward looking form. The stepped structure can be used to accomodate small open mics and discussion.

Typical classroom arrangement to accomodate all subjects. Small number of students help in more interaction.

A carpetted zone in the common area for informal gathering and activities between studnets and instructors.

Seperate washrooms provided in the faculty rooms.

Chairs and sofas for users to rest and read while using the library.

The common area is along the main circulation route of the school that helps in usage of the space at all times.

Benches for students to use for studies and interaction during flexiblle hours.

Students Accomodation

Ribbon windows that helps in amply light and viewing options from the room.

Each person gets a combination of these three facilities in their personal space.

A workspace, dresser and bedspace is provided.

Every Person gets their own perssonal space within a shared room. The Hostel is common for all students and professionals in the facilty.

Roof Design Roofing Material Glued Laminated Wood (Glulam) is a structural material manufactured through the union of individual wood segments. When glued with industrial adhesives (usually Melamine or Polyurethane resin adhesives), this type of wood is highly durable and moisture resistant, capable of generating large pieces and unique shapes.

Tempered glass is the combination of layers of ordinary glass. So, it has more weight than a normal glass. It has more thickness and is UV proof and soundproof.

These are used for aquariums, bridges, etc.

Since most of the build spaces are under a large roof, there is little chance of direct sunlight hitting the glass windows. This helps to in creating large spaces with glass for transperency and aesthetics.
