recommendations, AI systems influence decisions that can directly affect individuals and organizations. As AI adoption grows, organizations must ensure that models operate fairly, transparently, and consistently. A model that delivers strong predictive accuracy but creates unfair outcomes can introduce regulatory, operational, reputational, and ethical risks. AI fairness focuses on identifying and reducing unjustified differences in model behavior across individuals or demographic groups. Bias mitigation addresses the underlying data, algorithms, processes, and operational conditions that may produce those disparities. Together, fairness testing and bias mitigation provide an important foundation for building responsible and trustworthy AI systems.

Understanding Bias in AI Systems AI models learn patterns from historical and operational data. If that data contains incomplete representation, historical inequalities, sampling problems, labeling inconsistencies, or hidden correlations, the resulting model can reproduce or amplify those patterns. Bias can enter an AI system at almost every stage of its lifecycle. It may originate during data collection, data preparation, labeling, feature engineering, model selection, training, threshold configuration, deployment, or post-production monitoring. For example, a recruitment model trained primarily on historical hiring decisions may unintentionally favor characteristics associated with candidates who were previously selected.
