ON THE COVER

At Think Net Tailored Wealth Solutions, Sarah and JJ lead as partners in business and in life. After years of working in the same industry but under separate practices, they now build one unified firm shaped by their shared values. As Sarah noted, for the first time every effort they make goes into one place, creating alignment at home and at work.

Their approach centers on transformational conversations rather than transactional advice. They examine the full financial picture—real estate, business interests, investments, taxes, and long-term goals— taking extra time to build clarity and trust. JJ focuses on the big picture, simplifying complex ideas and setting direction. Sarah

brings depth and connection, helping clients feel comfortable sharing concerns while crafting detailed, thoughtful plans. Family remains their foundation. With six children, they understand diverse household needs and prioritize being present at home. They aim to build a culture where people feel “CelebratedVsTolerated,” creating a workplace defined by recognition and respect.

Beyond the office, they invest in their community through service, charitable support, and long-term growth plans. At its heart, their mission is stewardship—building a firm where clients feel understood, employees feel valued, and their children witness integrity in action.

How did you get started in this business?

I spent over a decade in a career that demanded 70-plus hours a week. I woke up one day and had three young kids at home, my son was already 7, my daughters were 5 and 1, and I had missed many of their “firsts” moments. The burnout on top of a wake-up call gave me the motive to change careers and industries.

That’s when I decided to make a change. I reached out to my good friend Charles Villarreal, who had been doing well in this industry. He believed I’d be a natural at it, so I joined him. Between his training program and the skills & experience I already had, we hit the ground running. From day one, it felt right.

At the end of the day, I got into this business so I could provide for my family and be the present father I wanted to be.

How long have you been in business?

I started in this industry in January of 2010. That said, I’ve been building businesses, investing in real estate, and working in sales since 1998, so I already had a solid foundation when I made the move.

What is your management style?

My management style is straightforward. I focus on controlling what we can control, influencing what we can influence, and showing real compassion for the things that are truly beyond our control.

I’ve found that when you stay disciplined on the first two and lead with understanding on the third, your team stays focused, motivated, and resilient even when challenges come up. I’ve also learned that people stop making excuses once you stop accepting them.

Why is it important to you personally to succeed?

I have a big, beautiful family! My wife is smart and talented, we have six children who we know are always watching. It’s really important to me that they see firsthand what’s possible when you combine hard work with education and intentional planning. I want them to know they can build a strong future instead of just hoping for one.

I didn’t grow up wealthy. In my house, we rarely talked about finances or careers. Like a lot of families, we played it safe, planned for the weekend, and hoped things would work out. We didn’t intentionally design a better future. That experience taught me some hard life lessons. I’m determined not to pass that same pattern on to my kids. Success for me means being the kind of father who’s not just present, but who can open doors for my children and show them that they’re capable of building something meaningful.

Where do you see yourself in your line of business in the next year? In the next five years? The next ten years?

I’m really excited about what’s ahead. In the next year, we’ll be finishing our new 10,000 square foot office in San Antonio and opening a 2,500 square foot location right here in New Braunfels. We’re aiming to grow to over 50 full-time advisors by the end of 2027.

Looking five years out, we plan to have a strong presence in Austin with around 30 advisors there.

And ten years from now, by the end of 2037, I see us operating in Dallas and McAllen as well. At that point, we should have over 250 advisors along with a solid support team behind them.

Overall, I feel our future is very bright. We’re building this the right way, step by step, and I can’t wait to see it all come together.

Does your business have a stated mission statement, the reason that this business exists?

Yes, we do. Our mission statement is: “To guide individuals, families, and business owners toward financial independence through courageous conversations, tailored solutions, and a relentless commitment to growth. We believe that grit, accountability, and unity drive extraordinary outcomes for our clients, our advisors, and the communities we serve — creating generational wealth and impact that outlasts us.” What it really means to us is that we’re not just here to sell financial products. We exist to have honest, sometimes tough conversations with people and build customized plans that help them achieve true financial freedom. We’re committed to holding ourselves and our clients accountable, working as a team, and building something that doesn’t just benefit one generation, but

creates lasting impact for families and communities long after we’re gone.

Why do your customers select you over your competitors?

Our clients choose us because we’re really good at building and keeping real relationships. There are plenty of companies that are stronger with the transactional side of things, but I don’t think anyone does personal relationships better than we do.

We get to know our clients on a deep level — their parents, kids, siblings, even their pets’ names. A lot of them have become like family to us. I’ve actually been adopted by at least seven different families over the years, and I try to make it to almost every birthday party I’m invited to. That’s the kind of connection we build.

What would you say are the top three skills anyone should have in business?

I’d say the top three skills plus a bonus are…

Communication, especially being able to explain things clearly and persuasively. If you can’t communicate your ideas well, sell your vision, or really listen to people, it’s tough to get anything done.

Sales & Persuasion, Whether you realize it or not, everyone in business is selling something. A product, a service, an idea, or even themselves. Strong persuasion skills make a huge difference.

Financial literacy, You don’t have to be an accountant, but you need to understand how money works, things like cash flow, margins, and what actually drives profit. That knowledge helps you make smarter decisions.

In the end, no matter what business we’re in, we’re really in the people business. If you remember that and treat it seriously, you can succeed in almost any industry.

Sarah Ramirez

How did you get started in your career?

Like many people, I didn’t take a straight path into this career. I graduated with a degree in Marketing and initially thought I would one day run my own advertising agency. After spending about six months working at a local ad agency, I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. Following a period of self-reflection and guidance from a career coach, I discovered this industry — and 18 years later, I’m still passionate about what I do.

What three pieces of advice would you give other women in business today?

First, don’t wait until you feel like you know everything — you never will. Growth comes from taking opportunities before you feel fully ready.

Second, take the chances when they come. Some of the best decisions in life and business require a leap of faith.

And finally, be fearless, even if it’s only for one minute. Sometimes courage is simply taking the next step despite the fear.

What woman in history or your own family has been your greatest inspiration?

I come from a long line of strong, independent women whose resilience and work ethic deeply shaped who I am today. My great-grandmother ran her family’s general store while my great-grandfather worked on the railroads. She kept both the business and family going through sheer determination.

My grandmother was one of the first female hospital administrators of her time. She led entire hospitals before retiring in her 30s to care for my aunt during a year-long coma and later devoted herself to caring for her special needs daughter.

I also watched my mother transform herself from a struggling single mother into a highly successful entrepreneur who remains respected and sought after even in her late 60s.

The strength, perseverance, and sacrifice of the women in my family have always been my greatest inspiration.

How do women today achieve work-life balance?

I don’t believe there is such a thing as perfect balance. Instead, I believe you decide

what matters most to you and build your life around those priorities.

For me, that starts with taking care of myself so I can show up as the best version of myself for my family, my clients, and my business. We all have unique talents and passions, and it’s important not to lose sight of them.

I chose to raise a family while also building a business I love. That requires structure, discipline, and intentionality. I stay very organized with my schedule, prioritize time with my children, and make sure that when I’m home, I’m fully present with my family. Delegation has also been incredibly important.

At the end of the day, work-life balance is really about understanding your priorities, creating boundaries, and giving your full attention to what matters most in each moment.

What have you learned about leadership, entrepreneurship, and mentoring others?

Leadership is not easy because every person is different. You’re constantly working with different personalities, communication styles, and motivations. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that effective leadership starts with understanding what drives people — what excites them, motivates them, and gives them purpose. Once you understand someone’s “why,” you can lead and mentor them far more effectively. Entrepreneurship also requires resilience. It’s not for the faint of heart. Entrepreneurs

tend to be visionaries — passionate, driven, creative people who are willing to take risks and push through challenges in pursuit of something bigger than themselves.

What has been the role of luck in your success?

I don’t believe success is about luck. I believe success comes from consistently showing up, putting in the work, and staying committed day after day. What people often call “luck” is usually the result of preparation meeting opportunity.

Do you have any major achievements and significant milestones to date?

The achievements that mean the most to me are the relationships I’ve built with my clients and hearing how much they value the work I’ve done for them and their families. Professionally, I’ve been honored with numerous top producer awards throughout my career. I’m especially proud of consistently qualifying for Million Dollar Round Table’s Court of the Table and being recognized as one of the Forbes Top Financial Security Professionals in Texas.

What has been your most satisfying moment in your business career?

One of the most satisfying moments in my career was making the decision to walk away from a 17-year career with one firm to build something new alongside my husband. Together, we chose to create a business centered around our own values, vision, and the kind of impact we want to have on the families and communities we serve.

“Roses, Racing, and a Little Texas Flair” Kentucky Derby 2026

There’s something delightfully timeless about the Kentucky Derby—an American Grade I stakes race run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Three-year-old Thoroughbreds thunder 1 1/4 miles in what the world calls “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” also known as “The Run for the Roses” and “The First Jewel of the Triple Crown.” First run on May 17, 1875, the Derby is now celebrating 150 years of pageantry, tradition, and just the right amount of sparkle.

And if the horses are the headline, the fashion is the standing ovation—so yes, we arrived dressed to the nines, Derby-ready from head to toe.

On May 2, 2026, we celebrated in style

at the Derby Party at Oak Hills Country Club— sunshine, laughter, and a breeze that seemed made for fascinators. Between the delicious bites, lively entertainment, and the friendly competitions (Best Dressed Couple, Best Dressed Fascinator, and Best Dressed Female and Male), the afternoon had that perfect mix of “Southern tradition” and “San Antonio flair.” The race played on a big screen out on the golf course, and for a moment it felt like our own little stretch of Churchill Downs—minus the mud, plus the Texas glow.

I’ve always loved the Derby for the details: the hats that practically have their own zip codes, the statement shoes, the color, the confidence. My husband, Silvano, and

I have made it our tradition to show up in matching, bright outfits—coordinated hats, shoes, the whole cheerful production—so we can blend right in with the rich and famous of San Antonio… and the not-so-rich and famous too. Add a little horse betting, a perfectly chilled mint julep (the Derby’s signature sip), and a sea of red roses—the Derby’s beloved bloom—and you’ve got a celebration that feels glamorous and welcoming all at once. And as a travel agency owner, I can say this with certainty: our number-one bucket-list dream is to do it the real way someday—Louisville, Churchill Downs, and every bit of Derby magic from the first toast to the final stretch.

NET WORTH VS. NETWORK:

The Anti-Socialite’s Guide to Networking (With Intention)

The double doors of a hotel ballroom swing open, revealing a sea of blazers, the clinking of glassware, and a low roar of chatter. For many, this sight triggers an immediate flight response. We’ve been conditioned to view networking as a high-pressure hunt for leads, but it’s time to reframe the narrative: Networking doesn’t have to be scary; it just has to be intentional.

The secret to conquering “room anxiety” is to stop trying to meet everyone and start trying to meet the right someone. Before you even park your car, set a specific, manageable goal. Instead of telling yourself you need to “work the room,” decide that you will have three high-quality conversations. By shifting the metric from quantity to quality, you lower the stakes and allow your personality to shine through.

“By shifting the metric from quantity to quality, you lower the stakes and allow your personality to shine through.”

Walking in with intention also changes your body language. When you have a mission, you carry yourself with a different kind of energy. Instead of hovering by the buffet line, look for “open” groups—circles of people with a physical gap that invites a newcomer. Approach with a simple, honest opener: “Hi, I’m [Name], I’m a first-timer here and wanted to introduce myself.” You’ll find that most people are relieved to have a new voice join the conversation.

Remember, the goal of a mixer isn’t to close a deal; it’s to plant a seed. Focus on being a “connector” rather than a “collector.” Ask questions that go beyond “What do you do?” Try asking, “What project are you most excited about right now?”

When you lead with curiosity and a clear goal, the room stops looking like a gauntlet and starts looking like a community. So, at your next San Antonio mixer, take a deep breath, fix your intention, and walk in. Your next great partnership is just one intentional “hello” away.

There’s a certain kind of blue that only makes sense in motion.

It lives somewhere between the horizon and the ocean, between the sky at noon and the reflection of polished chrome. It’s the color of transition—the quiet shift from spring into summer, when the world softens, brightens, and begins to hum with possibility. And this season, that story is told through two unmistakable silhouettes: a Blu Hera Lamborghini Murciélago and a Blu Cepheus Lamborghini Huracán, both transformed and preserved by the craftsmanship at VAULT Auto Services. These aren’t just cars. They’re moments.

The Art of Preservation

Before they ever touched asphalt under the summer sun, both Lamborghinis underwent a meticulous process—paint protection film seamlessly wrapped across every curve, followed by a deep ceramic coating that amplifies their blue into something almost liquid. The Murciélago, with its analog soul and dramatic lines, wears its protection like armor—subtle, invisible, but essential. The Huracán, sharper and more modern, reflects light with a precision that borders on surreal. Together, they don’t just shine—they hold the season. Because summer isn’t static. It’s fleeting. And that’s exactly why you protect it.

A Season of Transitions

The timing couldn’t be more fitting. As the summer solstice arrives, the longest days stretch endlessly into warm evenings. The world shifts gears—graduations give way to new beginnings, weddings fill calendars

with celebration, and the quiet elegance of spring evolves into something louder, freer. These Lamborghinis exist perfectly in that transition. Picture the Murciélago rolling slowly past a countryside wedding in the Texas Hill Country—yellow blossoms swaying in the breeze, sundresses catching golden light, champagne glasses clinking under oak trees. It’s not just transportation; it’s part of the atmosphere. Now shift to the Huracán, top down, slicing through a coastal highway near a beachside vacation home. The sun glints off the ceramic-coated finish as it mirrors the sky above. Salt air, music, laughter—this is summer distilled.

The Rhythm of the Season

May and June bring a rhythm unlike any other time of year. Mother’s Day mornings feel softer, filled with flowers and gratitude. Father’s Day leans into something more adventurous—keys tossed into eager hands, engines ignited, open roads calling. These are the days when a drive isn’t just a drive, it’s a memory being written in real time. Convertible, both Lamborghinis carry that spirit. Windows down, roads open, the Texas Hill Country unfolding in rolling greens and winding curves. The world feels alive again—fields blooming, trees full, the air warm but not yet heavy. You don’t rush drives like this. You let them happen.

Sunlight and Motion

Summer is movement. It’s yachting weekends and spontaneous road trips. It’s sun-faded afternoons and late dinners outside. It’s packing light, leaving early, staying longer than planned. The Huracán thrives here—agile, responsive, built for the kind of driving that feels like freedom. The Murciélago, heavier with presence, turns every arrival into an event. Together, they represent two sides of the same season: the thrill

and the elegance. And through it all, the paint remains flawless—protected against the harsh Texas sun, the dust of country roads, the salt of coastal air. The work done at VAULT isn’t about aesthetics. It’s about longevity. It’s about making sure this summer looks just as vivid years from now.

The Color of Memory Blu, in this context, becomes something more than color. It’s the sky above a graduation ceremony. It’s the water beside a yacht at sunset. It’s the reflection in the hood of a car parked outside a wedding reception. It’s the quiet in-between moments—the transitions that define a season.

A Summer That Lasts

As the months unfold, the world will continue to turn green, then gold. Flowers will bloom and fade. Vacations will come and go. But some things remain—preserved, protected, ready for the next chapter. That’s what these Lamborghinis represent. Not just speed. Not just luxury. But a summer, captured—and made to last.

Divine Equality

Chicken N Pickle recently presented Divine Equality with a donation check for $964.25 through its community-driven Cup Campaign program. The initiative allows a portion of beverage sales purchased during the campaign period to be donated directly to local nonprofit organizations making a positive impact in the community. Through this partnership, customers were able to support Divine Equality simply by dining and participating in the campaign.

The funds raised will help Divine Equality continue its mission of improving health and wellness access for underserved communities throughout San Antonio. Specifically, the donation will support the organization’s efforts to open a mental health counseling center in low-income communities where access to affordable mental health services

is often limited. The future center will focus on providing counseling resources, emotional wellness support, preventive education, and connections to community-based care for individuals and families in need.

Pictured during the check presentation are Divine Equality President David Anderson and Vice President Karina Williams proudly accepting the donation from Kim Crinklaw, Senior Community Coordinator for Chicken N Pickle. The presentation highlighted the importance of local businesses investing back into the community and partnering with nonprofits that are committed to creating lasting change. Divine Equality extends sincere appreciation to Chicken N Pickle, Kim Crinklaw, its staff, and every customer who participated in the Cup Campaign and helped make this contribution possible.

From the End of the School Year to the Start of Summer

April showers truly brought May flowers, and with them came the closing chapter of the 2025–2026 school year. It has been a busy year filled with growth, challenges, celebrations, and countless smiles. As spring officially began on March 20, 2026, our campuses buzzed with energy from Spring Break and Easter celebrations to the final stretch that brings another school year to a close in SAISD.

This season was also a time to pause and recognize the incredible people who make our schools thrive. We celebrated National Administrative Professionals Day, El Día del Niño, Bus Driver Appreciation Day, National Principals Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, National Nurses Day, and National Assistant Principal Week. Each recognition served as a reminder that schools are powered by dedicated individuals who show up every day for students, families, and one another.

Our district theme for the year, “Launching into Greatness!”, could not have been more fitting. Together, we lifted students, supported families, and worked tirelessly to move forward even in uncertain times.

Unfortunately, this season of transition also brought difficult realities. Due to a massive structural budget deficit and declining enrollment, SAISD made the painful decision to displace employees. As a result, this school year comes to a bittersweet and sad end for me personally, as I was one of those affected.

Still, I leave with gratitude. The past two years at Nathaniel Hawthorne Academy have given me memories I will carry forever. It truly became my home away from home, a place filled with heart, teamwork, and purpose.

Now, as summer begins, I step into a season of rest and reflection looking forward to sunny days, enjoying my Schlitterbahn season pass, working on my summer tan, and preparing for whatever comes next. While the future is still unfolding, my hope and prayer remain to continue serving within the SAISD community.

As one school year ends and summer begins, I am reminded that every ending also holds the promise of a new beginning.

 Moving On / New Chapter…

“Some goodbyes are heavy because what we lived here mattered. As this school year ends, I’m leaving with gratitude for every moment, every lesson, and every heart that made this place feel like home. The chapter is closing, but the love and growth we shared will carry forward into what’s next.”

Mothers’ Day 2026 –

Motherhood Unscripted

Mother’s Day is an internationally recognized celebration honoring mothers, maternal bonds, and their enduring influence on our lives and society. Established in the United States in 1914 by Anna Jarvis, the holiday centers on gratitude—often expressed through simple yet meaningful gestures such as cards, flowers, family meals, and heartfelt words.

I am truly blessed to still have my mother with me. Her name is Stella Gonzales, and at 81 years old, she continues to embody strength and perseverance. Living with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, she remains fiercely independent. Even while managing her own health challenges, my “Super Mom” stood by my side as I battled breast cancer and underwent heart surgery, navigating seven surgeries between the two of us during overlapping medical crises. For her unwavering care, courage, and love, she is—and always will be—my hero.

Mother’s Day reminds us of the extraordinary resilience of mothers: their ability to carry burdens silently, multitask endlessly, and love without limits. My mom has been a widow for 21 years, during which time she

selflessly raised all 5 of her children-3 girls and 2 boys, seven of her grandchildren, ensuring they did not need daycare until they entered school. She has also lovingly helped raise three great-grandchildren, giving generations the gift of her presence, patience, and wisdom.

Today, we also recognize the dads who step into the role of mom, the mothers watching over us from heaven, and the women who mother through choice and circumstance— foster and adoptive mothers, grandmothers, aunts, mentors, and friends whose nurturing touch changes lives.

As Linda Wooten so perfectly said, “Being a mother is learning about strengths you didn’t know you had.”

A Dedication

This Mother’s Day, I dedicate these words to Stella Gonzales—a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, survivor, caregiver, and my greatest blessing. Your strength carried me when I could not stand on my own, and your love continues to shape generations. Thank you for being my first home, my constant comfort, and my forever hero. Let us celebrate all the wonderful moms— tod

From Startup to 300+ Stores: Female-Founded Sunshine Society Launches at Nordstrom

The fast-growing brand founded by best friends Lexie Polito and Alli Sims continues national expansion with Nordstrom launch and Bloomingdale’s partnership.

Sunshine Society, the female-founded lifestyle brand known for its joyful approach to luxury loungewear and hand-drawn prints, has reached another significant milestone with its launch at Nordstrom.

Founded by lifelong friends Lexie Polito and Alli Sims, Sunshine Society has experienced remarkable growth since its launch, expanding into more than 300 retailers across the United States, including Bloomingdale’s, and now Nordstrom.

What began as a passion project between two women searching for products that

matched their aesthetic has evolved into one of the fastest-growing emerging lifestyle brands in the specialty retail space.

“We started Sunshine Society because we couldn’t find the products, we were constantly looking for ourselves,” said Lexie Polito, co-founder of Sunshine Society.

“Every print, every collection, and every product was born from a desire to create something beautiful that brings a little more joy into everyday life. To see Sunshine Society with Nordstrom’s is both humbling and incredibly exciting.”

Known for its signature silky sets and custom-designed prints inspired by travel, family, nature, and everyday moments, Sunshine Society has built a loyal following among consumers seeking elevated comfort and timeless style.

“From the beginning, we simply wanted to create products that we loved and that made people happy,” said Alli Sims,

co-founder of Sunshine Society. “Every collection is inspired by the things that bring us joy—family, friendships, travel, and making memories. Seeing Sunshine Society at Nordstrom is incredibly exciting, and we are so grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way.”

The Nordstrom launch marks the latest chapter in the company’s rapid rise. Despite entering a highly competitive retail landscape, Sunshine Society has continued to gain momentum through thoughtful product design, strong retailer relationships, and an unwavering commitment to its mission of celebrating everyday joy.

“Our growth has been beyond anything we imagined,” added Polito. “But what makes us most proud is not the number of stores - it is hearing from customers who tell us our products make them smile, help them create memories with their daughters, or simply bring a little sunshine to their day. That has always been the heart of our brand.”

Fueled by love and sunshine, Sunshine Society offers collections for women, girls, and babies, along with coordinating accessories and seasonal lifestyle products. Parlor Doughnuts Partners with Hershey’s for First-Ever National Brand Collaboration

Landmark Partnership Brings the New Hershey’s S’more Doughnut to Guests Nationwide for the Month of July

Parlor Doughnuts, home of the Famous Layered Doughnut™, is celebrating the flavors and traditions of summer with three limited-time July offerings: the Hershey’s S’more Doughnut, the Rocket Pop Doughnut, and the Root Beer Float Doughnut. Available throughout July at participating Parlor Doughnuts locations nationwide, the seasonal lineup celebrates some of summer’s most memorable traditions, from campfires and backyard gatherings to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations and classic soda shop favorites.

Headlining the July menu is the new Hershey’s S’more Doughnut, a collaboration between Parlor Doughnuts and Hershey’s that transforms a classic campfire tradition into a one-of-a-kind doughnut experience. The partnership marks a milestone for Parlor as the first time the brand has collaborated with and featured a nationally recognized household name as part of a signature doughnut offering. As Parlor continues to grow and expand their presence across the country, they expect to see more collaborations like this in the future.

Built on Parlor’s Famous Layered Doughnut™, the Hershey’s S’more Doughnut begins with a rich chocolate glaze, topped with

marshmallow cream toasted to a golden finish and sprinkled with chocolate cookie crumbles. Finished with a graham cracker and a Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar, the doughnut delivers the familiar flavors of a classic s’more in a distinctly Parlor way. Joining the Hershey’s S’more Doughnut are two additional limited-time creations inspired by classic Americana:

About Parlor Doughnuts

Founded in Evansville, Indiana in 2019 by Darrick Hayden and restaurateur Joshua Tudela, Parlor Doughnuts began with a vision to bring people together over distinct doughnuts, creative flavors, and genuine hospitality. The name “Parlor” reflects that spirit—a nod to the warm, inviting rooms where people used to gather and share life. The brand also honors the legacy of the Doughnut Lassies, women who served doughnuts and coffee to soldiers during World War I, offering a taste of comfort and home even on the front lines. Today, that same heart for the community inspires every Parlor location through Parlor’s mission: To connect and uplift people by sharing the joy of life-changing sweet treats and savory eats.

Pernod-Flambéed Lobster: Chef Lau-

Dish Leads

New Seasonal Menu

This summer, Brasserie Mon Chou Chou in San Antonio sets the tone with a showstopping new menu centerpiece: Homard du Maine au Pernod, a refined yet indulgent dish that captures the flavors of the season. Maine lobster is flambéed with Pernod, then paired with creamy spinach and sweet crab, creating a layered, aromatic composition that is both classic and unexpected.

Developed by Chef Laurent Réa, the dish reflects his signature balance of French technique and seasonal lightness—elevating a brasserie staple into something distinctly memorable.

“Cooking with lobster is about precision and respect,” says Chef Laurent. “With Homard du Maine au Pernod, I wanted to highlight its natural sweetness while adding depth through the anise of Pernod and the richness of crab. It is a dish that feels celebratory, but still rooted in tradition.”

The full summer menu unfolds with a series of highlights:

Tarte Tatin d’Oignons, Slow-caramelized onion tart, melted local goat cheese, and fragrant thyme

Œufs Mimosa au Beaujolais, Beaujolais wine-

poached deviled eggs, silky celery root rémoulade, and crispy duck cracklings

Saucisson Brioché, Sauce Périgueux, Lyon’s iconic brioche-wrapped garlic sausage, finished with a luxurious truffle Madeira sauce

Homard du Maine au Pernod, Maine lobster flambéed with Pernod, served with creamy spinach and sweet crab

Joue de Flétan Confite, Olive oil–poached halibut cheek, saffron potato mousseline, and bright sauce “vierge”

MOLE BITES AND VINO ON CINCO DE MAYO

There are evenings when a single sauce tells a whole story—and on Cinco de Mayo, mole did exactly that at Casa Guipzot in La Villita, alongside HERNÁN Mexico.

Small bites arrived like punctuation marks: chalupa mole with its crisp edge and soft center, meatball mole bites glazed in deep brick-red richness, and slider-size versions built for a two-bite finish. Dessert bites followed, but it was the wine lineup that kept the conversation moving—Mexican reds, rosés, and whites, plus a sulfite-free pour for those of us who appreciate flavor without the after-effects.

Mole is never just “one thing.” It’s patient and layered—chiles and spice, sweetness and smoke—built the way families build

traditions. I grew up in a house where my mom made the best-tasting mole, and we ate it often because it fed a family of seven with warmth to spare. That memory made this tasting feel less like an event and more like a homecoming—only dressed up for the press and industry crowd. Hosted in honor of the legacy of the Battle of Puebla, Casa Guipzot and HERNÁN Mexico positioned mole and wine as more than a pairing— they made it a statement about Mexican culinary identity in motion, right here in San Antonio.

At the center was HERNÁN’s award-winning Mole Poblano—Puebla’s most iconic ceremonial dish—its sheen hinting at the work behind it. With each sip, the wines recali-

brated the palate: reds leaning into cocoa and spice, rosés lifting the heat with bright acidity, whites cutting through richness to keep the sauce’s complexity in focus. Together, the pairing read like a new chapter of Mexican excellence—confident, contemporary, and deeply rooted.

As San Antonio’s premier Mexican wine purveyor, Casa Guipzot continues to shape the

city’s evolving wine culture, and HERNÁN Mexico—approaching two decades—remains a steady force in elevating traditional flavors with fine-dining precision. Founders Salena Guipzot and Isela Hernandez aren’t just hosting tastings; they’re building a table where heritage and modernity can sit side by side—and where mole, in all its glory, gets the spotlight it deserves.

Pullman Market at Pearl

While America celebrates a quarter-millennium of freedom, enjoying our favorite news channels, parades in both our bigger cities and small-knit communities, vast waters within the State of Texas and alongside the Gulf of America, whether in Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, or some remote sandy beach, we sometimes crave a different vantage point. In reflecting back and moments like these, we need a quiet refuge in plain sight – a place to vanish into the crowd and be a peace in anonymity and close enough to get back in time to jump into the pool.

Escaping the San Antonio summer heat for a spontaneous Sunday cruise with the top down! We decided on a whim to head to the Pearl—knowing it would be buzzing, but always the best spot to people-watch and grab an unhurried, casual bite with a culinary twist of something new and something other than what we grilled on the holiday.

Between enjoying the wind in the car with the top down and wandering the scenic brick paths of The Pearl, all I could think about was an ice-cold water and a

frosty pint of draft beer. Though we are familiar with the district, we wanted to stretch our legs a bit further today. We were searching for that elusive, hidden experience—a local secret that mere mortals like us usually just walk right past.

The Pullman Market, located on the corner of Karnes St and Newell Avenue, has convenient eateries, Michelin 2025 restaurants, courtyard, specialty grocer, a whole animal butcher with a meat aging room, and some of the best burgers in San Antonio. Burgers by the Butcher to include “The Wagyu’” a premium gourmet burger with a buttery marbling with a much richer flavor, a soft milk bun topped with garlic Aioli, lettuce, tomato, and pickle. Another fan favorite, “The Cowboy,” to include Texas Angus beef, milk bun, smoked Onion Remoulade, sharp Cheddar, bacon, frizzled onion, and pickle. Both are juicy, packed full of moist flavor and must include a pint of cold local IPA beer.

Check it out and the several other eateries to include a dessert bar with only 20 seats and one-of-a-kind two seating night with reservations only found at Nicose

Dessert Bar, where this 8-course preset menu offering an upscale casual experience if you follow their dress code and certain restrictions to elevate your experience.

Today, Sandra and I went Fourth of July weekend casual and may check it out another visit. We both were in the mood for quick culinary and were incredibly pleased to stumble into the Pullman Market.

[Within the walls of Pullman Market, you will find a specialty grocer, a whole animal butcher, a sourdough bakery, a chef supply shop, five quick-service eateries, and four distinct restaurants. Throughout the entire space, we seek flavor first. The products that you will find in the grocer are ingredients that we love. If it comes from Texas, it has an extra special place in our hearts. Whether you take something to enjoy at home or you want us to cook for you, we invite you to find something you love.]

May Our Paths Cross: Where Gulf Coast Flavors Meet Texas Hospitality

There are dinners you enjoy, and then there are evenings that remind you why food is an art form. May Our Paths Cross was one of those rare culinary experiences, a thoughtfully curated collaboration celebrating creativity, craftsmanship, and the rich flavors of the Gulf Coast.

Hosted by Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery, the evening united Executive Chef Aaron Juvera with Houston’s Michelin-recognized Chef Lucas McKinney of Josephine’s Gulf Coast Tradition. Together, they presented a one-night-only menu that honored Southern hospitality while showcasing refined technique, seasonal ingredients, and bold Gulf Coast flavors.

My favorite bite of the evening was the Blue Crab Cake-Stuffed Texas Ribeye. Perfectly prepared, the tender ribeye was elevated by a delicate blue crab cake, sweet maque choux, and a vibrant heirloom tomato sauce vierge that tied every element together beautifully.

The evening began with an elegant amusebouche featuring compressed melon, Gulf swordfish ham, lime, and garlic flower, a refreshing first impression that awakened the palate with both balance and creativity. Another standout was the Red Snapper & Shrimp Roulade, accompanied by braised endive, luxurious Sauce Albufera, and caviar, delivering a refined finish that reflected exceptional technique. Equally memorable were the thoughtfully curated beverage pairings. From the crisp Pearl on the Patio German Pilsner to the tropical complexity of The Last Cast, the evening concluded with the espresso-for-

Summer Hill Country Happenings

The Texas Hill Country is having a moment this summer, and three experiences make a convincing case for heading to the hills.

First up: the Summer Season Pass, a firstof-its-kind seasonal wine passport from Texas Hill Country Wineries. Running June

1 through August 31, the pass unlocks 35+ wineries across three full months—giving travelers room to wander, return, and discover at their own pace. At $65 individual or $100 for couples, it is the rare summer splurge that saves you money.

Then circle June 12–14 for Barrels + Bites 2026, a three-day weekend where guests go behind the scenes at participating wineries, choosing between barrel tastings with many of the winemakers themselves or curated food and wine pairings at every stop. It is an intimate, immersive look at how Texas terroir is showing up in the glass right now.

Looking ahead, Fredericksburg Food & Wine Festival’s Preview Week (July 20–25) brings

six days of pop-up dinners, white parties, vineyard feasts, boozy brunches, and a sausage showdown to one of Texas’s most charming towns—all leading up to October’s main event. Festival badges drop July 23.

Three reasons to make Hill Country your summer ritual.

Texas Hill Country Wineries Debuts a Summer Camp for Wine Lovers

Summer camp is getting a grown-up upgrade in the Hill Country. This July, Texas Hill Country Wineries launches its first-ever Hill Country Wine Camp, a three-day immersion in Texas wine set across some of the region’s most recognizable properties, just over an hour from San Antonio.

Running Friday, July 17 through Sunday, July 19, Wine Camp is designed for wine lovers who want to go deeper than the standard tasting room visit. The weekend blends hands-on education, guided tastings, and behind-the-scenes access that is rarely available to the public, all with a focus on what’s happening in Texas wine right now.

The weekend opens Friday evening at Carter Creek Winery Resort, where campers can settle in with a walk-around tasting of Span-

ish-inspired Texas wines from eight area wineries, paired with Spanish-influenced cuisine (5 to 7 p.m., $115).

Saturday at Becker Vineyards is the heart of the experience: a full day, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., that starts with Vineyard 101 and moves into a guided comparative tasting of Roussanne and Mourvèdre grown across different Texas terroirs. After lunch, the afternoon brings a blind tasting session and a wine board workshop before the day winds down with a Texas BBQ dinner ($175).

Sunday morning shifts to the Texas Wine Collective for bubbles and brunch featuring Texas sparkling wines, followed by a handson wine judging session that lets campers try their palates at evaluating wine like the pros (9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., $100).

The Alamo City’s First Pink Prince of the Riverwalk’s Mission to End Breast Cancer

Each year, San Antonio, ranking as one of the top four largest cities in Texas and sixth in the nation, celebrates Fiesta. Fiesta translated into English is a party, however, it is so much more for not only fellow San Antonians but fellow Texans and tourists.

Fiesta San Antonio is an annual 11-day citywide festival in April celebrating San Antonio’s culture, heritage, and history, specifically honoring the Alamo heroes and the Battle of San Jacinto. Equally, as important as a celebration of the heroes of the Alamo, Fiesta is also a time of immense altruism, charity, and donations to notable causes.

For example, the River Walk Royal Court is a group of ambassadors who represent the San Antonio River Walk and raise funds for local hospitality and scholarships for students at local colleges and universities. The current 2026 Prince of the Riverwalk is Jonathan Colemere, who serves as an official face of the riverwalk, promoting its history and cultural significance to locals and tourists. Jonathan Colemere worked tirelessly to raise money for the San Antonio Hospitality Foundation which resulted in scholarships for higher education at St. Phillips College and UTSA. This year, the royalty court of river walk, raised over a hundred and fifty thousand dollars towards that goal!

But the story does not end there. Jonathan Colemere is known as the first pink prince of the river walk royal court, because of his dedication to bringing an end to breast cancer. Jonathan began his journey to help

those diagnosed with breast cancer by service at Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF).

The Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF) is a grassroots non-profit based in San Antonio, Texas, dedicated to ending breast cancer through advocacy, education, and patient support. Founded in 1993 by survivors, it connects the scientific community with patients and offers critical local resources, key programs & services. One such program is the Alamo Advocate Program: An internationally recognized program held during the annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) that provides patient advocates with high-level scientific training. Support & Outreach, including a 24-hour bilingual helpline staffed by survivors, and financial assistance for screenings for uninsured or underinsured individuals. Second, advocacy is conducted by ABCF at the local and legislative level to improve healthcare access and research funding. Finally, providing resource guidance such as the National Breast Cancer Coalition Resource Guide to help locate mammograms, support groups, and mastectomy supplies in the San Antonio area plays another critical role of the non-profit agency.

Jonathan Colemere’s mission is paramount to those diagnosed with breast cancer facing great challenges, physically, emotionally, mentally, and financially. For example, ABCF’s mission will serve to aid a true soldier in the fight against cancer, Jobina Rico. Ms. Rico who was diagnosed with Triple negative breast cancer ER positive, shared, “it is a never-ending battle, which takes a toll

on me emotionally, mentally, physically and financially daily.” Ms. Rico shows enormous strength in the face of adversity, managing the diagnosis with grace and resilience. Further, Ms. Rico emphasized how significant having access to resources for those battling cancer is for her. In addition, she stated that the support of her daughter, Ashley and son-in-law, Daniel provides her with continued strength and tenacity in the daily fight she faces. Therefore, as Jonathan Colemere stated as the executive director of ABCF, it is imperative to have an organization such as Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation to assist these individuals as they maneuver the extremely challenging terrain of being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Jonathan Colemere stated that he will use his crown to advocate for everyone affected by breast cancer, with a special focus on our hospitality industry workers who are often at higher risk and have fewer resourc-

es. Lastly, Mr. Colemere, San Antonio’s Pink Prince of 2026 will promote ABCF’s Core programs, including the helpline providing emotional support and direct financial aid for patients in active treatment, bringing free mammograms and education to underserved areas, advocacy, and the Alamo Advocate Program.

After Dale passed away after battling Metastatic Breast Cancer, I felt a profound responsibility to carry on the ‘torch’ of her spirit. Dale’s lifelong mantra was that “No one should face breast cancer alone”, and our mission at ABCF is clear “To End Breast Cancer.”

Summer Growth: What God Is Cultivating in You

There is something beautiful about summer. Flowers bloom, gardens flourish, and nature remind us that growth is a process. But before those blooms ever appear, something important happens beneath the surface. Roots are developing, seeds are taking hold, and life is being formed where no one can see it.

I believe many of us are in a season just like that.

Maybe you have been praying for a breakthrough, waiting for an opportunity, or trusting God for healing in an area of your life. Yet despite your prayers and faithfulness, it may feel as though nothing is changing. If that is you, be encouraged: God is still working.

Some of His greatest work happens in the unseen places. While we are focused on what has not happened yet, God is cultivating patience, strengthening our faith,

refining our character, and preparing us for what lies ahead. What feels like waiting may actually be preparation.

Galatians 6:9 reminds us, “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessings if we do not give up.” Notice that God’s promise isn’t about the harvest—it’s also about enduring the season before it arrives. This summer do not underestimate the power of unseen growth. The same God who causes flowers to bloom is faithfully working in your life—even when you cannot yet see the results. Trust Him in the process. Keep planting seeds of faith, hope, and obedience.

In His perfect timing, what has been growing beneath the surface will bloom into something beautiful. And when it does, you will realize God was working all along.

Rise Boldly,

Postpartum Psychosis Awareness Day

Summertime is a time for better weather, family vacations, sports, camping, and summer engagement. For most people, the summer is a welcome break from school, work, and other life stressors as there is a collective reset. However, for some, it is not so easy. While August is historically the highest month for birth rates, the expecting process is not always one of joy for some women. In fact, it can be downright dangerous. To shed light on this, Postpartum Psychosis Awareness Day is the first Friday of May.

What is Postpartum Psychosis?

The arrival of a new baby is a major life event. While often a time of joy, it can also bring significant physical and emotional challenges. For a very small number of women, these challenges can include a rare but serious condition called postpartum psychosis.

Postpartum psychosis is a severe mental health illness that can happen suddenly after childbirth. It is considered a psychiatric emergency and requires immediate medical attention. It is different from the “baby blues” or postpartum depression, as it involves psychotic symptoms.

When Does It Occur?

Symptoms typically begin during pregnancy or, more commonly, within the first four weeks after giving birth. However, some clinicians believe symptoms can appear up to a year or more postpartum.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms?

A person with postpartum psychosis may experience a combination of the following symptoms. They often have a rapid onset and can change quickly.

- Mood and Behavior Changes:

- Rapidly changing moods (e.g., from very high and energetic to very depressed).

- Feeling agitated, restless, or irritable.

- Severe insomnia or not feeling the need to sleep.

- Confusion or “cognitive clouding.”

- Disorganized or frantic behavior.

- Psychotic Symptoms:

- Delusions: Believing things that are not true. These are fixed, false beliefs that can sometimes be focused on the baby.

- Hallucinations: Seeing or hearing things that are not there.

- Disorganized Thinking: Speech that is confusing, jumbled, or hard to follow.

- Depressive Symptoms:

- Feelings of hopelessness, sadness, or despair.

- Crying spells.

- Loss of energy and motivation.

- Feelings of worthlessness or guilt.

- Thoughts of harming yourself or your baby.

How Common Is It?

Postpartum psychosis is rare, affecting only 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 women after childbirth (0.1-0.2%). Women with a personal or family history of bipolar disorder are at a higher risk.

Why Does It Happen?

The exact cause is not fully understood, but it is believed to be linked to the dramatic hormonal shifts that occur during and after pregnancy. The stress and sleep deprivation of caring for a newborn can also be contributing factors. It is a medical condition and is not the fault of the mother. Societal pressure to be a “perfect,” happy mother can create feelings of shame and isolation, making it harder for women to speak up and seek help.

Getting Help: What You Can Do

Postpartum psychosis is a treatable condition, but it requires immediate help. If you or someone you know is showing signs of postpartum psychosis, it is a medical emergency.

- Seek Immediate Medical Help: Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. Hospitalization is often necessary to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby.

- Talk About It: Do not be ashamed of how you are feeling. Talk to your partner, a trusted family member, or a friend.

- Consult Professionals:

- Therapy: A therapist can help you navigate the emotional challenges and changes in your life.

- Psychiatrist: A psychiatrist can assess your symptoms and discuss medication options if needed. There is no shame in getting medical treatment for a medical condition.

- Find Support:

- Support Groups: Peripartum and postpartum support groups connect you with others who have similar experiences.

- Mom Groups: These groups can provide valuable community and practical support for any mother, new or experienced.

A Message of Hope

You are not alone, and help is available. Seeking treatment is a sign of strength and is the most important step you can take for yourself and your family. By empowering women to seek help without shame, we lift up our entire community.

To The Stay-at-Home Working Mom

Summer: The air feels lighter, fresher—like a deep breath you did not realize you needed. The sky stretches wide, painted bright with sunshine, while the soft scent of rain still lingers like a gentle reminder to slow down. Birds are chirping, babies are being born, and the blue bonnets are blooming across the hills, creating the kind of beauty you cannot help but pause and take in.

These are the moments.

The kind of moments that might go unnoticed sitting inside an office, tucked behind a desk, surrounded by walls and a clock that seems to move both too fast and too slow at the same time. But not for us. We get to see it. We get to feel it. We get to step outside with our children, watch their little faces light up at the simplest things, and be present in a way that is truly special. And sometimes, in the middle of the chaos, that is easy to forget.

Because let us be real—this life is beautiful, but it is also a lot.

We are working. We are providing. We are building something not just for ourselves, but for our families. And at the very same time, we are the ones showing up to every doctor’s appointment, kissing every scraped knee, refilling the same snack three times in ten minutes and answering “mom” repeatedly without missing a beat. We carry so much, often without even realizing just how much it is.

The other day, I watched a mama duck by the water. She was just trying to eat, just trying to exist for a moment, while a group of male ducks followed closely behind her, not giving her a second of peace. And trailing behind her? A line of tiny ducklings, depending on her for everything. She did not stop. She did not give up. She just kept going.

And I thought… wow, that feels familiar. Because that is us, isn’t it?

Trying to answer emails while someone is calling “mom.” Taking a work call while a Toddlers are melting down in the background. Starting one task, getting interrupted five times, and somehow still managing to get it done. It is the constant pull in a hundred different directions—the responsibilities, the noise, the needs, the pressure.

The “mom, snack.”

The “mom, watch this.”

The “mom, I need you.”

The notifications, the calls, the deadlines. It can feel like you cannot catch a break. But here is the thing—we are in it. We are witnessing it. We are living a life that, while exhausting, is also filled with moments that so many wish they had more of. The giggles, the cuddles, the firsts, the little everyday memories that do not feel big in the moment but become everything later. We get to be there for it.

And that matters.

So yes, some days will feel overwhelming. Some days you will feel stretched thin. Some days you will wonder if you are doing enough, if you are balancing it all the way you “should” be.

But you are.

Even on the messy days. Especially on the messy days.

Just like that mama duck, you keep moving. You keep showing up. You keep caring for your babies while navigating everything else that comes your way. And that is something to be proud of. But do not forget—you matter too. Take the break. Eat the lunch.

Step outside and feel the sunshine on your face for just a moment longer. Breathe.

You do not have to do everything at all at once. You do not have to be everything to everyone every second of the day. It is okay to pause. It is okay to take care of yourself in the middle of taking care of everyone else.

Because you cannot pour from an empty cup, mama.

So as the seasons change and the world blooms around you, let it be a reminder— not Just of how beautiful life is, but of how strong, capable, and incredible you are

within it.

Keep doing your thing, just like that mama duck.

And do not forget… you have this. I see you. I am with you. And I am cheering you on, always.

From one stay at home working mom to another.

Summer in San Antonio: How to Stay Fit, Healthy, and Motivated When the Texas Heat Turns Up

When summer arrives in San Antonio, everything changes.

The River Walk gets busier. Fiesta season energy lingers in the air. Outdoor patios fill up. Families head to the lake, local parks stay active, and Texans begin preparing for one thing we all know is coming — the heat. And not just “warm weather.” Real Texas heat.

But here is the truth, most people do not realize summer can actually become one of the BEST times of the year to transform your health, improve your fitness, and reset your lifestyle — if you approach it correctly. Most people wait until January to focus on themselves. I believe May is the real beginning of personal transformation.

Why?

Because summer naturally increases movement, activity, confidence goals, social interaction, and motivation. People want to feel better, move better, look better, and have more energy. The key is learning how to work WITH the San Antonio climate instead of against it.

The Biggest Fitness Mistake Texans Make in Summer

The number one mistake I see every year is this:

People try to train in summer exactly the way they trained in cooler months. That does not work in South Texas. When temperatures climb into the upper nineties and beyond, your body experiences significantly more stress. Hydration demands increase. Recovery becomes more important. Electrolytes matter more. Sleep quality can decline. Even your heart rate rises faster during workouts in extreme heat. This means smarter training becomes more important than harder training. Summer fitness in San Antonio is about strategy.

Train Earlier — Or Later

If you want to exercise outdoors during Texas summers, timing matters.

The safest and most effective times to train outdoors are typically:

•Early morning before peak heat

•Late evening after sunset

San Antonio offers incredible places to stay active outdoors when temperatures are manageable:

•San Antonio River Walk

•Brackenridge Park

•Phil Hardberger Park

•Mission Reach Trail

•Eisenhower Park

Walking trails, incline hikes, cycling paths, and outdoor bodyweight workouts can all be highly effective without requiring extreme gym sessions.

Remember:

Consistency beats intensity.

You do not need a “killer workout” to get results. You need sustainable habits repeated over time.

Hydration Is More Important Than Most People Think

By the time many people feel thirsty, they are already mildly dehydrated.

Even mild dehydration can impact:

•Energy

•Recovery

•Endurance

•Mental focus

•Mood

•Workout performance

In Texas heat, hydration should become intentional.

A simple summer rule:

•Start hydrating BEFORE outdoor activity

•Add electrolytes if sweating heavily

•Do not rely solely on caffeine

•Increase water intake during high-heat days

Many people also overlook how dehydration affects appetite and cravings. Fatigue from dehydration is often mistaken for hunger, leading to overeating or poor food choices.

Summer Nutrition Should Feel Lighter — Not Restrictive

One of the best things about summer is that healthy eating naturally becomes easier.

San Antonio summers provide access to fresh foods that support hydration and energy:

•Watermelon

•Citrus fruits

•Cucumbers

•Berries

•Lean grilled proteins

•Fresh salads

•Smoothies

•Cold protein meals

The goal is not starvation dieting before vacations or pool season.

The goal is fueling your body properly. Extreme restriction usually leads to burnout, cravings, and inconsistency. Instead, focus on:

•Higher protein intake

•Better hydration

•Portion awareness

•Whole foods

•Balanced meals

•Reducing excessive processed foods and sugary drinks

Small daily improvements create major longterm results.

Walking: The Most Underrated Fat-Loss Tool

People constantly search for complicated fitness plans while ignoring one of the most powerful tools available: walking.

Walking improves:

•Cardiovascular health

•Recovery

•Stress levels

•Blood sugar regulation

•Calorie expenditure

•Mental health

And in a city like San Antonio, there are endless opportunities to make walking enjoyable rather than feeling like punishment. A consistent walking routine combined with strength training and proper nutrition can dramatically improve overall health.

Never underestimate simple habits done consistently.

Recovery Matters More in Summer

One thing I have learned through years in fitness and professional competition is this: Your body changes during recovery — not just during training.

Summer heat increases physical stress on the body, which means recovery becomes even more important.

Prioritize:

•Sleep

•Hydration

•Stretching

•Recovery days

Stress management

Many people think more exercise automatically equals better results. In reality, excessive stress without recovery often leads to fatigue, inflammation, low motivation, and burnout.

Fitness should improve your life — not drain it.

Fitness Is Bigger Than Appearance

Summer often creates pressure around appearance.

But real fitness is deeper than aesthetics.

Fitness is:

•Having energy to enjoy life

•Improving health markers

•Building confidence

•Reducing stress

•Supporting longevity

•Increasing quality of life

It is about feeling strong, capable, healthy, and mentally resilient.

And perhaps most importantly — it is about consistency over perfection.

You do not need to be extreme.

You do not need to be perfect. You simply need to keep moving forward.

Final Thoughts

San Antonio summers are hot, vibrant, active, and full of opportunity.

Whether you are walking the River Walk at sunrise, training in the gym before work, hiking local trails, meal prepping healthier foods, or simply committing to drinking more water and moving more consistently — every positive choice adds up.

This summer, instead of chasing perfection, focus on building habits you can sustain long after the season ends.

Because the healthiest transformations are not temporary.

They become a lifestyle.

Mental Health is not a Prozac Deficiency: Redefining Mental Health in America.

May was Mental Health Awareness Month, and while awareness has grown, our understanding of why people suffer from depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorders remains incomplete. Too often, mental health is reduced to a single narrative: a chemical imbalance requiring medication. Medications absolutely have a role, and they save lives but if we stop there, we miss the deeper truth,

Mental health is not just a brain issue. It is a whole-body, whole-environment condition.

The Scope of the Crisis: National and Local Reality

In the United States, suicide remains a leading public health concern, with an age-adjusted rate of approximately fourteen per 100,000 people. It is one of the leading causes of death, particularly among younger populations.

Closer to home, the data is equally sobering and here are the statistics:

•In Bexar County, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10–34

•Teen suicide attempts in San Antonio have risen dramatically, with reports of a ~50%

•increase in attempts in recent years

•Approximately 14% of teens report suicidal thoughts locally

Nearly 1 in 5 adults (18%) in Bexar County report poor mental health for at least half the month

These are not just statistics. They represent families, patients, and communities in crisis. We now know that mood disorders often arise from physiologic dysfunction, not just neurotransmitter imbalance. Here are just a few:

1. Vitamin D Deficiency: The “Silent Mood Regulator”

Vitamin D acts more like a hormone than a vitamin. It influences serotonin production, immune modulation, and neuro inflammation. Deficiencies, especially common in indoor lifestyles or northern climates, have been strongly associated with depression and seasonal mood disorders.

2. The Gut-Brain Axis: Your Microbiome Shapes Your Mood

The gut produces ~90% of serotonin, and the microbiome communicates directly with the brain via the vagus nerve. Dysbiosis, leaky gut, and chronic inflammation can lead to:

1- Anxiety

2- Depression

3- Brain fog

4- Mood instability such as Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia

Emerging evidence shows that gut health disturbances can mimic or worsen psychiatric conditions and be misdiagnosed as just a mental condition when an underlying condition is the actual instigator.

3. Chronic Infections: Lyme, Mold, and Neuroinflammation

Many patients labeled “treatment-resistant” may have underlying inflammatory triggers such as:

1- Lyme disease and co-infections

2- Mold toxicity (mycotoxins)

3- Chronic viral or bacterial infections

These conditions can drive inflammation of the brain, and the result is symptoms that look psychiatric but are biologically driven.

4. Hormonal Imbalance: The Overlooked Driver

Hormones regulate brain chemistry more than most realize. The following medical conditions can mimic all forms of mental illness or worsen the underlying condition.

1- Low estrogen can cause depression, anxiety, brain fog 2- Low testosterone also causes low motivation, fatigue, and mood decline

3- Thyroid dysfunction mimics classic depression symptoms of low motivation, fatigue, brain fog

4- Adrenal dysregulation (cortisol imbalance) causes anxiety, sleep disruption and sleep deprivation alone can cause extensive mental illness issues.

In women especially, perimenopause and menopause are frequently misdiagnosed as primary psychiatric disorders.

5. Nutrient Deficiencies & Methylatio

Gene mutations, epigenetics, nutritional deficiencies such as:

1- B vitamins (especially B12, folate)

2- Magnesium

3- Omega-3 fatty acids

4- Vitamin D3 and K2 And more…

Can impair neurotransmitter production and detox pathways. Genetic variations (such as MTHFR) may further impair mental health.

6. Blood Sugar Dysregulation, Insulin Resistance, Diabetes

Mood swings, anxiety, and even panic symptoms can be driven by blood sugar changes. The brain is highly sensitive to glucose fluctuations, making metabolic health foundational to mental health.

The Missing Link, inflammation- in all these

conditions runs a common thread. Neuro inflammation is one of the most important and under recognized drivers of psychiatric illness. This helps explain why some patients do not respond to standard antidepressants alone.

A New Model: Treating Root Cause and Supporting the Brain. Mental health care should not be “either/or.” It should be both/and. Conventional tools that are essential for treatment are:

1- Antidepressants

2- Mood stabilizers

3- Psychotherapy, EMDR

4- Crisis intervention

5- Identifying past trauma

But identifying and centering on root cause therapies treat more than just symptoms:

1- Optimize vitamin D and nutrient status

2- Heal the gut and microbiome

3- Identify and treat infections or mold exposure

4- Balance hormones (thyroid, sex hormones, cortisol)

5- Reduce inflammation

6- Stabilize blood sugar

7- Improve sleep and circadian rhythm

Prevention: The Future of Mental Health

If we truly want to reduce suicide rates and mental illness, we must shift from reactive care to preventive physiology-based care which includes:

1- Screening beyond standard labs such as genetic testing and nutritional tests

2- Asking why, not just what medication

3- Addressing lifestyle, environment, and biology early

4- SUPPORT and reduction of stigma

Mental illness is not a sign of weakness. Please read that again. If you or someone you know suffers, be open to sharing and understanding that it is a disease and the stigma of mental illness keeps people from seeking support and the care they need.

It is often a signal that something deeper, biological, environmental, or emotional is out of balance. As physicians and as a community, we must listen more closely. Because when we treat the root cause and not just the symptoms that we save lives.

More Than Muscle: How Exercise Transforms Your Mental Health

Your Best Prescription May Already Be Free Stress is unavoidable. But what if one of the most powerful tools for managing it required no prescription, no appointment, and no cost? A growing body of research confirms that regular Exercise is one of the most meaningful investments you can make in both your mental and cognitive health.

A Whole-Body Benefit

Most of us know that exercise preserves muscle strength, supports heart health, maintains a healthy body weight and helps prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes. What is less widely understood is that the benefits extend far beyond the physical. Exercise is, in every meaningful sense, medicine for the mind.

A landmark study published in The Lancet Psychiatry, which analyzed data from more than a million adults, found that people who exercise regularly experience more than 40 percent fewer poor mental health days every month than those who are not active. Regular physical activity can cut the average person’s poor mental health by almost 50%.

What Exercise Does to Your Brain

Exercise triggers measurable changes in the brain, stimulating the production of mood-regulating chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. Research has also found that the regions of the brain responsible for thinking and memory are

larger in volume among people who exercise regularly. Engaging in moderate-intensity exercise consistently over six months to a year has been associated with actual increases in the volume of key brain regions. Exercise also improves sleep, reduces anxiety, and stabilizes mood, all of which directly supports sharper cognitive function.

Finding What Works for You

Aerobic activities that elevate your heart rate, such as cycling, brisk walking, and gym-based exercise, deliver strong brain and mental health benefits. Team sports offer the added advantage of social connection. Tai chi, though lower in intensity, has shown promise for enhancing executive function, including planning, attention, and problem solving, likely because it requires learning and memorizing new movement patterns. Even everyday activities such as gardening and household chores contribute meaningfully to emotional wellbeing.

The Bottom Line

Experts recommend exercising for 45 minutes, 3–5 times per week for mental health benefits and build slowly up from your current routine. Cognitive benefits usually start after about six months of consistency, so patience is essential. Start small, stay consistent, and think of every session as a long-term investment to a healthier, more resilient mind.

Texas Heat and Electrolytes!!

Electrolytes: substances that have a natural positive or negative electrical charge when dissolved in water help your body regulate chemical reactions, maintain the balance between fluids inside and outside your cells, and more.

Electrolytes and their function; they balance fluids inside and outside of cells. They support muscle and nerve function for proper muscle contraction that help regulate blood pressure, blood sugar, heart rate supporting nervous system.

Electrolytes consist of:

a. sodium – maintains fluid balance and pre-

vents cramping

b. potassium – for steady muscle contractions and nerve signals

c. magnesium – muscles relax and supports energy levels

d. calcium – assists with muscle movement and bone strength

e. chloride – works with sodium to regulate fluid balance

f. phosphate – regulates fluid balance

You can attain electrolytes in fluid or capsule form.

There are several zero sugar liquid drinks and electrolyte supplements available along with several edible fruits and vegetables loaded with natural electrolytes.

Bananas

Watermelon

Oranges

Coconut water

Raisons

Yogurt

Spinach

Kale

Dill pickles

avocado

Sweet potatoes

Swiss chord

Side effects of electrolyte imbalance:

•Nausea and vomiting

•Muscle cramps

I•rregular heartbeat

•Numbness and tingling

•Constipation

•Confusion

Texas summer heat is brutal and people die from severe dehydration which can happen very quickly. It can cause a pleather of issues if you don’t hydrate properly and replace electrolytes. I’ve always told my clients and patients that water is not enough, it’s vital to add electrolytes from capsule or liquid form to add to your hydration. Electrolytes lost when sweating are mostly sodium and chloride. Trace minerals like potassium, magnesium and calcium are lost as well.

Due to my own experience with electrolyte imbalance and severe dehydration I was inspired to write an article about it a few

years back in SA Monthly Magazine and you can also find me talking about it on my YouTube channel. Like an subscribe there are several informative videos.

I don’t endorse any specific electrolyte but I can only share the right cocktail of electrolytes that work for me.

Always check with your doctor to choose the ones he/she would recommend for you to avoid any contraindication to any allergies or meds.

Jaden Scharf

Next Up: Jaden Scharf Is Built for the Moment In sports; hype can come and go but work ethics always show up. And at just 14 years old, Jaden Scharf is already separating himself by putting in the kind of work most athletes only talk about. The soon-tobe freshman at Champion High School is not waiting for opportunities he is chasing them down. This summer, Jaden is heading to Los Angeles to train with elite four- and five-star talent, lining up alongside athletes already committed to powerhouse programs like University of Notre Dame, University of Michigan, and University of Oklahoma. Iron sharpens iron and Jaden is putting himself right in the fire. But this is not new for him. From grinding it out on multiple 7-on-7 teams to competing on the basketball court, Jaden is building a complete athlete profile

speed, agility, toughness, and versatility. He is not just playing the game; he is studying it, living it, and attacking it with purpose. Behind the scenes, he is sharpening his craft with mentor Yale Vannoy of YV QB Academy one of the top training grounds in the San Antonio area. There, Jaden is already running routes for some of the city’s highest-rated quarterbacks, many with Division I offers in hand. That level of exposure? It is rare. The confidence and experience? Even more valuable. And while the Texas heat wears most athletes down, Jaden leans into it. The dog days of summer are not a break they are a proving ground. Early mornings. Late nights. Rep after rep. Because Jaden Scharf understands something that cannot be coached: nothing is given everything is earned. And right now? He is earning it.

GUSTAVO MIOTO

São Paulo, Brazil/Nashville, Tenn.— Brazilian singer-songwriter Gustavo Mioto is introducing a new side of his artistry with the release of “Last Goodbye,” his debut English-language single available now on all streaming platforms. Written during an extended creative stay in Nashville, the song marks the beginning of a bold new chapter for Mioto as he expands his career into the global country music marketplace. Listen to “Last Goodbye” and watch the official music video, HERE.

A favorite among music fans in Brazil, Mioto has cultivated an audience of more than 12 million followers across his platforms and over seven million monthly listeners on Spotify while building a reputation as one of his country’s most respected artists. Now, after spending months immersed in Nashville’s songwriting community and collaborating with some of Music City’s most accomplished writers, including Daniel Ross, Casey Brown, Michael Tyler, Seth Moseley, George Birge, Ned Cameron, Gabe Simon and Beau Bailey, he is bringing his love of Country music and storytelling to an international audience.

“I have always been a fan of Country music, but there was one specific day that changed the entire trajectory of my life. I was watching TV and caught the CMT Crossroads episode with Keith Urban and John Mayer. It absolutely blew my mind. In that moment, everything clicked. I saw how you could combine the melancholic soul of John Mayer with the Country-rock energy of Keith Urban. It was the perfect blend of emotional depth and rockstar performance. That exact collaboration is the reason I picked up the guitar and started to play,” says Mioto.

“Since that day, my connection to country music became personal. It led me to visit Nashville for the first time about ten years

ago, and I instantly fell in love with the city, the culture, and the people. Being there made me realize that this music is not just something I listen to—it is exactly who I am as an artist”

Blending contemporary country influences heartfelt lyricism; “Last Goodbye” reflects the storytelling and emotional connection that first drew Mioto to the genre. The release has already generated strong momentum, surpassing 1 million Spotify streams within its first month.

“Look, ‘Last Goodbye’ has been doing big things back home in Brazil, and honestly, I am just so proud of how folks have wrapped their arms around it. Brazilians are warm, passionate people...we live for a good story, especially when it is a real tear-jerker. But the thing is, heartbreak does not need a passport. It is the one language the whole wide world speaks fluently,” he adds.

Signed to Universal Music, in partnership with MCA, with international representation by WME, Mioto has spent more than a decade developing a career that has earned him widespread acclaim, multiple chart successes, and a devoted fan base throughout Brazil and beyond. While deeply rooted in his Brazilian heritage, he is among a growing group of international artists embracing Nashville’s songwriting tradition and helping introduce country music to audiences around the world.

“Gustavo Mioto represents a new generation of global artists—talents who can honor their local roots while speaking to audiences everywhere. His move into English-language country music reflects both his artistic ambition and the increasingly borderless nature of today’s music industry. We are thrilled to partner with Gustavo, MCA Nashville, and WME as he continues to build meaningful connections with fans around the world through exceptional songwriting and authentic storytelling,” says Paulo Lima, President, Universal Music Brazil.

Ami Brown, Vice President, International Marketing, MCA, says, “Gustavo’s passion for country music is unmistakable. Rather than simply recording an English-language project, he immersed himself in Nashville’s songwriting community, collaborated with some of our city’s incredible creatives, and took the time to understand the culture

and storytelling that define the genre. ‘Last Goodbye’ is just the beginning. We’re excited to help introduce Gustavo to country audiences around the world and continue building a bridge between Nashville and one of the most vibrant music markets in the world.”

“Coming from Brazil, where Gustavo has played for over a million fans at a single Carnival show and performs more than 200 dates a year, starting from the ground up in North America is a testament to his dedication. Building a lasting, global career requires a solid foundation, which is why he spent months immersed in the Nashville songwriting community collaborating with some of Music City’s most accomplished writers. The momentum behind his debut English-language country single ‘Last Goodbye’—which earned over 1 million streams in its first month—gives us a fantastic starting point for this exciting next chapter,” shares

Born in Votuporanga, São Paulo, Mioto began playing guitar at six years old and wrote his first song at age 10. By 13, he was already performing professionally and building the foundation for a career that would eventually include nine albums and three live DVD projects.

Growing up as the son of Marcos Mioto, one of Brazil’s leading concert promoters, music was always a part of his life. Before pursuing it full-time, he worked at a gas station while continuing to hone his craft. Beyond music, Mioto is a multi-instrumentalist, avid gamer, Twitch streamer, and creator of the popular “MiotoSessions” social media series, where he performs acoustic interpretations of both his own songs and fan-favorite hits from a variety of genres.

With “Last Goodbye,” Mioto continues to build a bridge between Brazil’s vibrant music culture and Nashville’s renowned songwriting community, creating a sound that feels both globally inspired and unmistakably personal.

THE SHOW THAT SET BROADWAY BACK 1,000 YEARS...RETURNS!

TOURING ACROSS AMERICA

THE TONY AWARD-WINNING BEST MUSICAL COMEDY

Spamalot, which first galloped onto Broadway in 2005, features a book & lyrics by Eric Idle and music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle. The original Broadway production was nominated for fourteen Tony Awards and won three including Best Musical.

The musical comedy, lovingly ripped off from the film classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail, has everything that makes a great knight at the theatre, from flying cows to killer rabbits, British royalty to French taunters, dancing girls to rubbery shrubbery, and of course, the Lady of the Lake. Spamalot features well-known song titles such as “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” “The Song That Goes Like This,” “Find Your Grail” and more that have become beloved classics in the musical theatre canon.

Peter Marks of The Washington Post exclaims, “It’s UNFAIR to make me laugh this much! Spamalot is a tightly packed clown car speeding to musical theater nirvana!”

Mariachi Los Camperos – led by Jesus “Chuy” Guzman and considered by many to be among the finest mariachi ensembles in the world, invites you for an evening celebrating the Golden Era of Mariachi music with composers and singers such as Agustin Lara, Maria Grever, Javier Solis and Manuel M. Ponce to more contemporary musicians like Juan Gabriel, Vicente Fernandez and many more.

Los Angeles–based Mariachi Los Camperos’ abundant accolades, including multiple Grammy® awards and nominations and highly praised performances on premier concert stages such as Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Rady Shell, The Hollywood Bowl and many more, can easily obscure the fact that its leaders come from humble roots, deep within a mariachi tradition shaped by family and community. The group’s founder, Nati Cano, was a third-generation mariachi musician from the small town of Ahuisculco in the west Mexican state of Jalisco. From 1961 to his death in 2014, he lived his dream, forging his own group from his artistic vision and determination. Over his musical career, he challenged the attitudes that, during his youth in Mexico, led formally trained musical peers to look down on his beloved rural and working-class music. In the United States, he worked against class and racial prejudice that relegated Mexicans and their music to second-class status. In the end, he succeeded both socially and artistically, as borne out by the group’s and his own many honors and performances in prestigious venues across the United States and Mexico.

After being told no time after time in Nashville showcases, Sawyer Brown won over millions of fans with their electrifying TV performances week after week in Hollywood. Capturing the hearts of all ages, their sound was compared to country super-groups like Alabama and Charlie Daniels Band, but they looked more like the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith. From ignored underdogs in Music City to overnight rock stars from LA to New York, they swept the competition and won.

Riding on the wave of sudden TV popularity, the band spent their first year-and-a-half on the road with country and pop icon Kenny Rogers, opening his shows in arenas across the U.S., all while learning from the best.

From there, Sawyer Brown began to quickly carve out their own niche, delivering hit after hit, selling out venues, and constantly wowing an ever-growing fanbase. Navigating the music business on their own terms, the band blazed a new trail through uncharted territory to constantly beat the odds and win the day in the volatile world of the entertainment industry.

Today, Sawyer Brown just keeps on delivering their unapologetically blue-collar, grass-roots message through music. One of their fan-favorite songs says it all. “They were searchin’ for stars when we came along, it was rock ‘n’ roll in a country song, there were five of us thinking that we can, this is the life and times of a travelin’ band.”

In A Memory Palace confronts one of the pressing issues of our time: what does a person do when their beloved homeland, through violence and oppression, becomes unrecognizable? A dance at the border of this world and the next, In a Memory Palace draws on the stillness of Noh as the spirit of a once-celebrated Viennese couturier reaches across time to tell her story of migration. Live music, video, and masked performance evoke interwar splendor, echoing into present-day America where what went unspoken for too long finds release.

Founded in 2000, Theatre Nohgaku brings classical Noh drama of Japan to the wider world. With Japanese master performers, Theatre Nohgaku performs original and traditional works in Japanese and English, and educates audiences, students, and the general public about the arts of Noh, reaching across boundaries of culture and language to tell stories that reflect our shared humanity.

Beyond the Screen: A Journey to Machu Picchu Without Leaving San Antonio

Some places leave an imprint on your heart long before you ever set foot there.

For me, Machu Picchu has always been one of those destinations—a place rich with mystery, history, and breathtaking beauty. While traveling to Peru remains on my bucket list, I recently discovered that sometimes the most extraordinary journeys begin much closer to home. Nestled in San Antonio, the Machu Picchu VR Experience transformed an ordinary afternoon into an unforgettable expedition through one of the world’s most celebrated archaeological wonders. What I expected to be an entertaining virtual reality exhibit became something far more meaningful: an immersive encounter with history that blurred the line between technology and travel.

From the moment the headset came on, the outside world faded away. Standing among the majestic Andes Mountains, I found myself gazing across ancient stone terraces, navigating pathways once traveled by the Inca civilization, and taking in panoramic views that felt remarkably lifelike. Every turn revealed another breathtaking perspective, making it easy to forget I was still standing in Texas. What sets this experience apart is not just the impressive visuals—it is the storytelling. Rather than simply presenting historical facts, the experience invites guests to connect with the spirit of Machu Picchu. It captures the ingenuity, resilience, and legacy of a civilization whose achievements continue to inspire travelers centuries later. It is immersive in every sense of the word, encouraging curiosity while offering a deeper appreciation for one of the world’s greatest cultural treasures.

As a storyteller, I found myself reflecting on how powerfully technology can bridge distances. Virtual reality has evolved beyond entertainment; it has become a gateway to understanding places and cultures that many only dream of visiting. It offers a rare opportunity to experience the wonder of global travel in an accessible and engaging way.

Whether you are a seasoned traveler planning your next adventure, a history enthusiast eager to explore ancient civilizations, or simply looking for a unique experience to enjoy with family and friends, the Machu Picchu VR Experience delivers an unforgettable escape. I left inspired, not only by the remarkable beauty of Machu Picchu but by the realization that meaningful adventures do not always require a passport. Sometimes, they simply require a willingness to see the world through a different lens.

One day, I hope to stand among those ancient ruins in Peru. Until then, this re markable experience reminded me that wonder has a way of finding us, even when we are closer to home than we realize.

Editor’s Note

Clifford’s Take:

“The Machu Picchu VR Experience is more than an attraction; it’s an invitation to explore one of the world’s greatest wonders through the power of immersive storytelling. Whether you’re fueling your wanderlust or introducing your family to world history in a fresh, engaging way, this experience belongs on your San Antonio bucket list.”

Adventure Awaits: Discover Europe’s Wonders

So Silvano and I caught the travel bug and decided to “go BIG or go HOME!” We took 3 weeks oA and traveled to Europe—visiting four countries in three weeks: Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

Germany was extra special because my husband was born in Munich. He wanted me to see the hospital where he was born, the schools he attended, the apartment he lived in, and the places he played as a child—and to meet his German relatives! His cousin Peter lived on the 3rd floor above a German bakery, so every morning we woke up to the smell of fresh pastries. Germans are funny people… here in Texas we wake up to a cup of coAee— while in Germany, they’ll hand you a beer! We ate the most amazing dishes Peter cooked for us, and we also tried some delicious local restaurants.

Our first night in Germany we stayed at a hostel called “Helter Skelter”—and it was coed, so that was quite interesting! We also went to a mini Wurstfest where we rode rides, ate great food, drank lots of German beer, danced a ton, and met some amazing people.

Italy was next—and my husband is also of Italian descent, so we have relatives there too. We took a first-class train to Rome (a total treat—I’d never been on a train before!), and we passed through Florence along the way. In Rome we stayed at a lovely hotel just two blocks from the Vatican. We toured the Vatican, attended Mass with the Pope, visited the Colosseum, did lots of shopping, and ate AMAZING Italian food and wine—the Italy way! Austria was our third stop, and it looked like a beautiful postcard—so much greenery, gorgeous flowers, and friendly people everywhere. Switzerland was our fourth and final stop— WOW, what a beautiful place! Great food, delicious treats, the tastiest water, and truly stunning scenery. The only downside was that

some folks weren’t as friendly as we expected, and Switzerland was definitely the most expensive stop—but our hotel was beautiful. We gained a little weight from ALL the incredible food across all four countries, but we made unforgettable memories and took some AWESOME pictures. Our Europe trip was truly EPIC!
