The rich diversity of music found in the two Americas, North and South, is distilled into this perfect program featuring music by both North and South American master composers. American Jeffery Mumford’s cello concerto played by Christine Lamprea follows Tango genius Astor Piazzolla’s Tangazo subtitled “variations on Buenos Aires,” an evocative ode to the sensual Argentine city. Leonard Bernstein’s Divertimento is a rollicking tribute to his own native city and its own venerable Boston Symphony Orchestra. John Adams’s El Dorado connects the long musical road between North and South with dazzling orchestral virtuosity.

Aaron Copland’s El salón Mexico, an evocative tone-painting of a Mexico City dance hall, opens this program. The San Antonio Symphony features its very own brilliant concertmaster Eric Gratz in Samuel Barber’s superbly melodic Violin Concerto—its lush Romanticism a clever contrast to the same composer’s Medea’s Meditation and Dance of Vengeance, his portrait of “psychological states of jealousy and vengeance which are timeless.” Orchestral excerpts from Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s tuneful Florencia en el Amazones round out this colorful program.

Local Band

Doral Club

Chris Chagoya- Lead vocals and guitar, Carlos Guardiola-Bass, Rudy Torres-Drums & Jon Martinez-Guitar

Doral Club is a mixture of Indie, and Pop Rock. Based in San Antonio, TX, this quartet aims to reach a new demographic of listeners with their unique sound, and diverse style of writing. We had all been a part of different bands prior to Doral Club. Jon, Rudy and Carlos had been in a band called "Reckless in May" with a few of their friends, for a couple of years. I had my own band "Tantivity", at the same point in time, about three years ago. Each band did a few shows but nothing serious came out of it and due to busy schedules and different priorities,neither prospered and the two bands and their members eventually split up. Around the summer of last year, Carlos who's also my cousin invited me to jam with him, Jon and Rudy. After a few months of writing songs and sharing ideas we decided to try our hand at being a band and in April of this year, Doral Club was formed. In the first week of June we debut Doral Club at Fitzgerald's bar here in SA, for open mic and were quickly invited back to play a festival they were having for the fourth of july. In september we were a part of the SA Current's Music Awards and were nominated second place in the category of "best new band". We've been a part of a handful of shows and each time we are learning, changing and growing who we are as musicians and as a band. We are all excited for what the future brings and our passion for music can be seen in our work. Right now we are in the process of recording demos and scheduling shows for the month of December.

Local Musician of the Month

Bret Mullins

www.bretmullins.com www.facebook.com/bretmullinsband

Carefree blonde hair tucked under a Stetson hat, an old guitar, and an easy grin are key elements of singer Bret Mullins’ signature look. David Ryan, host of the podcast “Southbound I-35,” nailed it when he described Bret’s sound as “a very strong, distinctive voice but with a certain familiarity.” Texas country music fans have wholeheartedly approved so far; San Antonio awarded Bret with the title “Best Country Band” in 2014. The 6’-3” singer has just released his second album, titled “Long Live A Country Song”. From the fun, carefree “Watching You Drink” to his hopeful“Another Love Song”, Bret has proven he can incorporate the staples of country music-love, loss, strength, and having a good ol’ party- seamlessly into one album. The steady rise in popularity and the full dancehall concerts seem to say that Bret Mullins is just getting started and that the country music scene can expect a whole lot more in the future.

How do You want your writing and songs to affect people, and if so, how? Without question my biggest hope is that our music evokes strong memories and emotions that take the listener to a specific place and time. That’s the beauty and power of music in general. When we put together set lists for shows we try and bring the audience up and down, back and forth, through a full range of emotions. From an up-tempo sunny-side-up tune to one that’s heavy on minor chords and cries of yearning and sadness. That’s kinda how life comes at us every day. Do You need validation from fans, music critics, everyone, in That’s a good order to feel that your music is good? question, I’d like to say no but that wouldn’t be true. I’ve gotten better but I still feed off of the energy (or lack there of) of the crowd. I’m currently working on focusing on the emotion of the song and letting ‘em have it. Just recently I was reading critic reviews of our new CD, which were overwhelmingly good. What do I do? Obsess over a snarky comment some guy made anonymously. Guess I need some work in that area. Do you Feel you truly work and give everything to your dream in music? I will say I dedicate a huge amount of time, money, and energy pursuing this dream. Even when it doesn’t seem to make sense, there is a voice inside urging me to go on. It is without question a true Heart’s Desire. I believe we all have one. When someone asks, “Taking money completely out of the equation, if you could doing anything in the world what would it be?” The answer to that question is our intended purpose in life. If we don’t pursue that in some way we’ll be miserable and unfulfilled. Is there a point in your career where You see yourself hanging up your hat? As long as I can sing I’ll be doing this in some form. I cannot imagine life without it. Do you have stage fright? If so, how did you overcome it? It’s funny, in general I’m an extremely introverted person. I have a phobia of public speaking in business type situations- sweaty palms, cottonmouth, the works-but from the first time I stepped on stage to sing, I felt extremely comfortable. It is a craft and takes practice to learn how to actually perform in front of people but it’s as if I have a split personality when I’m up there. What kind of training and practicing have you had that got you ready to be where you are today? It was recommended early on to get instruction on practicing good technique to keep from damaging the voice when singing several times a week. Bobby Flores and the folks at Bulverde Academy of Music helped me with that immensely. I’m glad I took that advice; it can get pretty brutal out there. I’ve also learned so much about the art of studio recording from Mike & Ron Morales at Studio M where I recorded both albums here in San Antonio. Those guys are real pros. Are you open to the idea of collaborating with other singers of our choice? Oh definitely. We’ve done several projects with other artists and they were all great and creative experiences. In particular we were fortunate enough to record a version of Whiskey River for our new album with the legendary Johnny Bush (the song’s writer) and multi-Grammy winner Flaco Jimenez. A dream come true for me. Have you ever been signed up by a record label? We are independent artists and have not been signed by a label. The industry has changed so much I don’t know that we would be interested in conventional deal if offered. All costs, however, do come directly out of pocket (album production, packaging, distribution, radio promotion, PR, advertising, merchandise, etc) which is insanely expensive but of course we retain full control. We could sure do a great job for a corporate sponsor however! Are you open to traveling to any location wherever there is a concert? Absolutely. For better or worse it is still a business and has to make sense financially but we would go to any lengths to have our music heard by as many folks as possible. As a matter of fact, we’re heading to France next Spring and have a European tour in the works. Our CDs do very well there and we’ve made a lot of friends overseas. The internet has brought about opportunities that were just not available to independent artists just a few years ago. We do our best to take full advantage of that.

As culinary director of Hotel Emma, John Brand is a true representative of that uniquely American class of chef—selftaught—having worked his way up to become a nationally recognized chef from a teenage dishwasher in Wisconsin. Twenty-five years later his vision is guiding Hotel Emma’s raison d'etre: a great hotel, the cultural and culinary center of the city—the place with the best restaurant, the best martini, and the place we meet to celebrate, make deals, and show off what we love most about where we live. Brand oversees three epicurean properties at Hotel Emma that include Supper, the hotel restaurant; Larder, the in-house market and cafe; and the Sternewirth, the Hotel Emma bar. Led by Chef Brand’s vision, Hotel Emma boasts an array of contemporary cuisine and dining options that are comforting and imaginative. Inspired by San Antonio’s gastronome resurgence, the hotel’s innovative approach to service also includes an in-house culinary concierge. His philosophy and approach to food centers on developing approachable meals that showcase hyper-seasonal offerings and flavor profiles that both highlight and preserve the integrity of ingredients through skillful preparation. Over the course of his career, John has developed a methodology to cuisine that focuses on honest, un-manipulated flavors, cliché-free menus, simple food perfectly prepared, thoughtful sourcing that isn’t preachy, creating traditions, and establishing a neighborhood restaurant as well as food and beverage experiences throughout Hotel Emma that will bring guests,like family, back again and again. During Brand’s tenure in the culinary industry, he has left his mark at several top-rated fine dining restaurants across the country including The Little Nell in Aspen, Keswick Hall in Charlottesville, and the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Brick Oven Pizza Restaurant of the Month Sammy has always had a serious passion for pizza, which is why he’s a strong advocate for “legalizing marinara,” as he likes to joke. So when he couldn’t find the perfect pizza he was craving – lots of hot, melted cheese, fresh dough and a ton of toppings to choose from all made in a wood-burning, brick oven – he decided to create his own pizza company. Thus, Brick Oven Pizza Co. was born. Sammy opened his first location in May at The Rim on La Cantera Parkway, and pizza patrons have been pouring in since. “Customers have told us how much they enjoy being able to build their own pizza by selecting from 40 toppings and choosing from gluten-free, wheat or our original dough,” Sammy said. The pizza proprietor is proud to boast that Urban Brick’s dough is made fresh daily in-house, and pies are fired in a custom-made, brick oven he had shipped all the way from Italy. The build-your-own-pizza concept, which has been a hit with pizza lovers, works like this: First, you pick your crust, then your sauce (red, spicy red, garlic olive oil), then you choose your cheese (gorgonzola, feta and shredded mozzarella, among others), then your toppings (roasted almonds, banana peppers, spinach and artichoke are some of the more interesting ones) and, finally, you select your drizzle, including pesto, virgin olive oil, barbecue, ranch or roasted sun dried tomato and more. Urban Bricks has become so successful in such a short time that construction is underway for two additional San Antonio locations: Culebra Market Shopping Center, 10650 Culebra Road, and Westover Hills Hwy 151, 9218 Potranco Road. Both stores are expected to open at the end of the year or early 2016. Through franchising, he will be able to offer the right individuals the same opportunities he’s enjoyed the last several years – the ability to operate a fun, fulfilling and profitable business while at the same time expanding the Urban Bricks Pizza Co. family to locations throughout Texas. Sammy adheres to a motto that lends itself to his pizza company’s recipe for success, “Neapolitan pizza with an all American attitude!” For more information, visit www.urbanbrickspizza.com.

Weekend Warriors... by Margaret Kondoff, Majestic Massage

Here it is- that 5K or the full marathon that you are resolute to cross off "the bucket list". Many are training, eating healthy, and (if all else fails) are going to will themselves over the finish line. Perhaps we have finally come to the conclusion that we have to put down that beer mug and those fantastic barbeque ribs, in order to recognize (or feel) any semblance of our former twenty-something self. So we surrender our soft bodies to the CrossFit gods as we grunt out a prayer- "Oh God help me get through this last set!" Some of us finally decide to set aside procrastination and take on that out -of- control lawn with its relentless weeds, that daily reward you with your neighbor's dirty looks. Let us not forget the well overdue Spring cleaning (nevermind that it is Winter). While these are all great and rewarding endeavors, the eventuality is the same- OUR BODIES SCREAM AT US! The muscles are sore, tight and cramping. The tiny micro-tears from the stress placed on our muscles cause soreness and inflammation. This leads us to then negotiate, and convince our weaker "I'm only human" self to do it all again..What will help us win this war? Ask your Massage Therapist about Deep Tissue or Sports Massage. Some are surprised to discover that massage therapy is great Before and After and event. Before an event, massage therapy warms the muscles, loosens and prepares the body to work more comfortably with better movement in concerned areas. After the event, this therapy will increase blood circulation, helping the lymphatic system to remove toxins, bring down inflammation. The emphasized stretching techniques will create better range of motion and prepare the body to recover after the event. Maybe you have some mileage on that "not-even-close to twenty-something " body, but remember you are wiser now and likely have more money... Use these to take better care of your body and mind. To those of you who are still young and strong and riding on all the power of your youth...Keep in my mind we are mere mortals ..Plan ahead and adjust to better advance toward our goals. More power to you all... “The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails. William Arthur Ward

Maintaining and Starting Your Healthy Fit Lifestyle during the Winter Season By Fitness Editor, John Townes IV

The winter season is a perfect excuse to cut back on your routine to stay fit for many reasons. There’s too many to list them all but here are some main ones; it’s too cold, it’s the holidays my diet will be off, no one sees my body because I’m always bundled up and kids are out on school break there’s no time. However, in looking at all the reasons as deterrents, we need to look at them as motivators. It truly is a mind over matter issue that starts with focusing on goals. One thing else to throw in is the question, what is the potential physical and mental setback for taking several months off? For most adults, we will pretty much have to start all over again. STARTING: The cold months are normally the times when the gyms start to thin out, no pun intended, so it’s an excellent time to start a membership. Gyms are aware of their members’ vacancy and will often run great deals to compensate. Also, if you don’t like crowds or you are a little uncomfortable on utilizing the equipment or certain exercises, this is an ideal time to familiarize yourself with everything the gym has to offer. If you are not into gyms, no big deal, a long brisk walk or run in the refreshing air once a day will do the trick. If you can’t get outside play what they call Exergames (ex. Wii Boxing and Konami’s Dance Dance Revolution) or go bowling etc. The key is not to become lethargic but to set “a goal” prior to the large meals and cold temperatures. One goal is all we need and make it an exercise goal, like run, walk, outside sports or the gym etc. What we eat and how much is up to us. We know how that food will affect us, so focus on an exercise that will counter it and “start.” MAINTAINING: Let’s face it; most individuals who have a set workout routine will probably not keep it throughout the entire winter season but will jump start it again as we get closer to Spring and especially Spring Break. With that being said, if you set a goal thus maintaining your routine throughout the cold months, you will be that much further ahead in your physical appearance or healthy lifestyle than most once winter is over. Again, it comes down to goals and everyone is different. This article is not about telling us what to and not to eat. There’s enough information out there for us to educate ourselves on the nutritional elements and lack of we put in our bodies. Like in life, all the above comes down to setting a goal or a set of goals for the holiday season. If we go into the cold months with no set direction on the outcome of our health or physical appearance for after the winter season, then our outcome is going to be the direct result of the lack of direction. And for us older individuals, our rebound time, as we all know, lengthens quite a bit, so staying ahead of the curve ball with some of the above mentioned ideas is key to starting or maintaining our healthy lifestyle.

MACRONUTRIENTS The Building Foundations of Fat and Muscle These macronutrients consist of protein, carbs and fat in which the human body consumes daily to survive and function. Each macronutrient has a number of calories it has. Protein has 4 calories. Carbohydrate has 4 calories. Fat has 9 calories! If you're wondering why fat is easier to gain then muscle, well there's your answer. It's because it has 9 calories against protein that has 4 calories. We all live differently and eat different foods. We all have a different amount of calories that our body needs to consume based on our activity level when we're not exercising, our height, weight, age, family genetic history, medications, injuries, heart condition, etc. We have mainly 3 different caloric numbers that we use to either maintain our physical state/proper bodily function, gain muscle, and lose weight. Remember, everyone's number is different. Therefore, it is important that you receive your caloric number based off your body and lifestyle, not someone else's. In addition to these calories, you must know how much calories are coming from your macronutrients: Protein, carbohydrates, and fats. These numbers are given out of 100% of your daily caloric intake. For example, if your macronutrient percentages are 40% Protein, 35% Carbohydrates and 25% Fat of 2,000 calories then you should be consuming, on a daily basis, 200 grams of Protein, 175 grams of Carbohydrates and 55 grams of Fat. Now remember, when you calculate 2,000 calories and 40% percent protein, don't forget to divide by the number of calories that are in a gram of the macronutrient which for protein is 4, carbohydrates is 4 and fat is 9. What ever your daily caloric number is, if you go over those macronutrients, you will gain fat and/or store fat. And if you are below your macronutrient number, then you won't gain muscle and your body will compensate it's energy from your carbohydrate stores and you will store more fat. These are all reasons why we gain weight or lose weight but essentially we all want to gain muscle and burn fat. Tracking calories is extremely important for someone who wants to meet their physical goals and keep track of their body and what stages it is going through. Food is the absolute best fat burner, muscle builder, and maintainer for our body. It is what truly defines our success in the changes of our physical state and our self confidence. Inspiring & Empowering Lives LEADING BY EXAMPLE By Fitness Editor Skie Molinar

Being involved in the Fitness Industry for so many years competing as a PROBodybuilder in the WNBF/NGA drug free federations along with competing in Figure class. I’ve won many awards and the greatest award I ever got, came in the form of motivating someone to walk again. After graduating, getting my associate degree in Physical Therapy and moving to Corpus Christi, TX, I began working at the Rehab Hospital. While working there I met a gentleman named Hector who used to volunteer to help at the front desk greeting people. Hector had once been an inpatient at the Rehab Hospital. After his accident, he was left with paraplegia. For those that don’t know what Paraplegia is? It is paralysis of both lower limbs due to spinal disease or injury. Even though he was diagnosed with paraplegia, he did have some minimal movement to his lower limbs. Hector and I became good friends throughout the time I worked at the hospital. After all the other therapists left for the day, I would stay to finish all my progress reports on patients, then I would dress into my workout clothes for 45–60 minutes of cardio. Then Hector would come into the Rehab Gym in his wheel chair to keep me company while performing my grueling cardio session so time would go by faster. He was so intrigued and asked a lot of questions. Hector remained loyal in coming in to keep me company as the competition grew closer and I became more exhausted with each session. I remember thinking to myself “Why am I doing this again, what am I doing it for, I’m exhausted and hungry, I should just quit!! The next day after feeling sorry for myself and wanting to quit, Hector came up to me in his wheel chair while finishing up my progress reports and said “can I speak to you”. He sounded really serious, therefore I was all ears and listened. He began to tell me that ever since I began talking to you and learning how much discipline it takes along with all the hard work you put into your Goals and Dreams, you have inspired me to take steps and walk again. He proceeded to tell me that after all the Therapists would leave and I was done with my cardio, he would go to the parallel bars and take steps till he was able to walk down to the end of the parallel bars and back. It took all I could to keep from crying tears of joy. It was only he and I again at the Rehab Gym, therefore I asked him to show me. As he stood up from his wheel chair to take steps, walk to the end of the bars and back, I almost broke down in tears. You see, Hector was told he would never be able to take steps or walk. All I could think about was the negative thoughts I was having the day before. With each step I saw Hector take, I could only tell myself “what is wrong with you”?? Here you feel like quitting and you have just inspired someone to walk again. It became obvious to me that, all the blood sweat and tears were worth it when you can Inspire many more to reach beyond their limits. Little did Hector know, that he too inspired me to train even harder for my competition? This lead me to a great Victory winning 1st place and overall in the light weight Bodybuilding class. You never know who is watching you & who you will Inspire, Empower & Motivate to do greater things than what they thought would be possible. When you lead by example, people will follow and when you Empower others, you will be Empowered! This year I am Introducing my first ever 2016 Angel Calendar with an Angel scripture with a different photo to match the scripture. Being sold through my website at www.skiesfitness.com.

Faith

in

Failure

I still remember the day I woke up free of all the evil that had been plaguing me for so many years. I felt like a new person. Free from addiction and full on ambition. It had been a long hard road to get to this point. But I stayed faithful and I made it out... I was bored in raised in a small town in central Texas by a hard working, God fearing family. I couldn't have asked for more. I was molded into a the man I am today by my family and the small town values I was hammered with on a daily basis. This foundation of faith, love, and trust would eventually be the only thing I had left and pull out of some really dark places. In 2004 I graduated from high school and man did I have plans. I moved Dallas soon after graduation, serving tables for money and going to a community college. My need to fit in and find acceptance was the beginning of the end. I had completely forgotten my faith. And I mean nada, for almost a year I never attended church, no prayer, absolutely no thought of my amazing God that had been so prevalent in my childhood. I started using cocaine and drinking myself to sleep with a mixture alcohol and xanex every single day. My every thought was about drugs and alcohol. For a long time I didn't even have the notion of quitting. It was running and ruining life. I had dropped all my classes and for 10 months straight I was fired from a half dozen serving jobs and sinking deep into my addiction. I remember Thanksgiving 2004, I couldn't make it back home to Brownwood because I didn't have any money. So my mother and grandmother drove to Dallas and met me for lunch. The night before I had drank several caps of GHB and cough syrup and had barely slept. Disoriented to the max as I walked up to the restaurant, I kept running through scenarios in my head looking for a believable excuse for my junked out state of mind. I don't remember what was said or what we ate that day, but I do remember the look on my mother's face as she slipped me some cash so my grandma couldn't see. She wasn't stupid. And for all you kids that think your parents are oblivious, you're wrong. My mother's face that day, completely broken, will never leave me. I woke up one morning and rolled out of bed. As I stood in the entryway of my bedroom I cried out, "I can't do this anymore." I had said this before but I was suddenly overwhelmed with emotion. Tears literally started flooding from my face and I hit my knees. I started praying and trying to bargain with God. We've all done it, "God if you get me out of this I'll...". I called my mother, told her I didn't want to do this anymore. Her exact words, "come home." I packed up everything I could and never looked back. I cold turkey'd my drug addiction and for a moment I found my faith in God once again. I lived with my parents briefly and then moved in with a good buddy of mine. I had left the drugs back in Dallas but the drinking stayed strong. You don't realize it's a problem until it's too late and you lose everything that matters to you. In August of 2005 I started going to Howard Payne University. It was there that God first tried to show me my path, with a love and a passion that would stick with me for the rest of my life and forever change the direction my life was headed..I started exercising and studying nutrition. With a gym 100 yards away from my dorm and a cafeteria with a plethora of nutritious food I saw progress quickly. Even though I was drinking a minimum of 6 beers a night. I can't even imagine what I would have accomplished had I not been cheating myself the entire time. One year later I moved to my now home of Austin Texas. My drinking had elevated. I was drinking whatever I could get my hands on. Everyday I fought an exhausting battle, trying to conceal the sheer amount of alcohol I was consuming ever night from my long time girlfriend. One of the things I regret most was not falling asleep next to her for over three years because I had to stay up for two more hours drinking myself to sleep. Despite my secret addiction I was living pretty well. Great friends, beautiful girlfriend, college coming to an end..everything was going my way and I was on top of the world. In one week I lost my girlfriend of 4.5 year and my job of 7 years. The booze addiction finally caught up with me. My world turned upside down in 7 days. I dropped out of college and sank deep into alcoholism. I had no ambition and absolutely did not care. The only thing that stayed with me was my love for fitness and my ever expanding knowledge of nutrition. It was my daily escape. I remember being so incredibly mad at God. How could He allow my perfect world and my plans for my future to be crushed in an instant?! Why?! I wouldn't understand the answer to that question for another year. Better yet, I wouldn't understand "God's will for my life" for another year. Sitting in my car outside of the restaurant I was serving at, I balled my eyes out. I did this frequently. Asking God for help and once again, begging for forgiveness that was undeserved and guidance for my life. I knew I was made for more than this! One night after work I got to the convenience store by my work at 12:05 AM, 5 minutes too late to get alcohol. Instantly I started filling with anxiety and panic. Then sitting in my car I had a thought. Just stop..no more. I got home sweating in anxiety. I grabbed my running shoes and my iPod and walked outside. I wasn't a distance runner by any means. The most I had ever

run was maybe 3 miles. I put on an old worship playlist and started running. I instantly went into some really deep prayer, balling my eyes out the majority of the time I was running. It got to a point where I literally couldn't run anymore. I sat down on the bottom stairs leading to my apartment and everything felt so clear. It was over and for the first time in close to 7 years I fell asleep sober. Later on I measured the loop I had ran so many time that night, I was fully engaged

with God for almost 10 miles. Exercise was my out once again. I later went on to run 4 half marathons averaging less than 8 minute miles. I was hooked. I had a renewed drive and ambition but was still stuck in a dead end job and didn't know how to get out. Looking back now God had laid out my path long ago, I was just to blind and selfish to see it. But God can only show you the path, he gives us opportunities, we have to take the action. I had a gift in exercise and fitness and loved everything about it. It had pulled me out of the darkest places in my life and I finally saw the path. I started my own independent personal training business in July 2012. After 3 months I had to quit serving tables because the only spots I had left open were the times I was serving!

B L E S S E D ! I was scared to death but I stayed faithful, I stayed sober, and I pressed forward. I am now a Naturally Fit Pro Men's Physique competitor, a far cry from the drug addict, alcohol dependent, slob that I had been before. Through this exposure and fame I continue to give every ounce of glory back to God because I know I wouldn't be where I am without him. I look back now and realize that everything that happened was part of God's plan. God's timing might not line up with ours but if we stay faithful and give all the glory back to God He will show you the path to happiness. I still pray daily that God shows me HIS will for my life because I know he's not done using me. God gives us all gifts. Find your God given passion and live it to the fullest. No matter the cost. My life has been filled with bad selfish decisions and an all knowing, forever forgiving God walking step by step along the way. Understanding God's will for my life was something that took me quite some time to see. But once I did, I finally started living.

Szu-Moy for Ms. Veteran America 2015 Retirement couldn’t have come at a better time for Szu-Moy Toves. The former Air Force Master Sergeant had spent 20 years serving her great nation, but now it was time to do something more. This year she decided to DO something bold. 2015 was going to become the year of “Do and Be” for this 40-year-old veteran. In February, she decided it was time to pay it forward to her sisters in harms way. Her sisters found peril not in the streets of Afghanistan or Iraq, but the streets of America. Over 55,000 women veterans are homeless on any given day and the streets are an unforgiving place for a woman with children in tow. Ms. Veteran America gives women who’ve served honorably in the military a chance to advocate for their sisters in need. Ms. Veteran America’s beneficiary, Final Salute Inc., helps homeless women veterans and their children find transitional housing or the means to keep them in their current home if they’re at risk of becoming homeless. The founder of Final Salute Inc., Jas Boothe, became homeless with her son after Hurricane Katrina hit. She vowed to “ensure her fellow sister Veterans had a resource in their time of need.” The fact that so many veterans who’ve served their country with pride were now Photo courtesy of Chloe Martin homeless tugged at Szu-Moy. The campaign then began. Over the next several months, Szu-Moy was speaking, fundraising and actively pushing awareness via social media, newspapers and face-to-face conversations. She garnered the top 25 spot out of 600 for the competition. It meant so much to represent what she says could’ve been her or any female in the military. “Often times we are looked at as secondary or as if only our spouses (male) have served. But, I served too, and I want people to see US. I want people to see the female veteran population and praise what we are doing.” The competition culminated in Las Vegas on October 18th where Szu-Moy was named top 10 out of the final 25 contestants. “This competition has not only opened my eyes to the needs of our sisters but to our sisterhood in general,” she said. Over the nine months Szu-Moy campaigned, she raised over $6,700 for homeless women veterans but also an awareness that is invaluable to the female veteran population. “I hope that more women get involved especially here in San Antonio. We are Military City, USA. Let us represent loud and proud!”

MEET YOUR ‘SOLE’ MATES The Holiday gift giving season may be over, but tennis players of all ages and levels still have this cool gear on their wish lists year ‘round. All tennis players love footwear! Tennis players have this obsession with the latest technical footwear. We all know the importance of having the best shoes on our feet when competing on the tennis court, if you’re planning on getting your tennis playing loved one a pair of tennis shoes in 2016 or a pair for yourself, here’s what I feel to be the best models currently being offered.

Nike Zoom Vapor 9.5 Tour This model has become the signature model for one of the greatest tennis players to have ever played the game Roger Federer. The Nike Zoom Vapor 9.5 Tour is one of the best ultra-lightweight, speed-oriented options on the market that also offers maximum ventilation. The fit and feel of the Vapor 9.5 Tour is second to none which stands to reason as it was designed by legendary Nike footwear designer Tinker Hatfield along with Roger Federer of course. Federer had been searching for a footwear model himself that felt as light and comfortable as a world class running/training shoe. Hence the Vapor Tour was born. This model utilizes the Adaptive Fit construction in the upper that allows the player to customize the fit of the shoe all the way up the lacing system, providing an ultra-supportive fit. The Vapor 9.5 Tour also features a seamless upper making it lighter and faster like no other Nike model before. In addition, durability has been improved with reinforced areas on the toe and medial side of the outsole. If the tennis player on your gift giving list is looking for the ultimate in lightweight performance and comfort on the tennis court, the new Vapor 9.5 is the one for him. This model comes in a variety of color executions including the new “camo” edition and is also available for women as well.

offered better out of the box step-in comfort and a faster, low to the ground feel compared to previous generations of the Barricade, all while maintaining superior support, stability and durability. This new Adidas Barricade 2015 Boost is offered in two color executions – solar red and in green.

Asics Gel-Resolution 6 The Asics Gel Resolution 6 offers one of the best stability stories in their tennis specific category of footwear stability. This Asics top-of-the-line model provides unparalleled stability with a new midfoot support system and external rear heel counter stabilizer that completely locks in the foot and prevents twisting during aggressive play. New Balance 996v2 New Balance is no stranger to the world of technical athletic footwear. This is the model worn and endorsed by top 10 ATP world ranked Canadian Milos Raonic. The upper is lined in a full foot TPU cage for better flexibility without sacrificing support and offering amazing ventilation to keep your feet dry even in the most humid conditions. The tread pattern on the outsole is designed to offer better traction and durability which is backed by the New Balance “NDurance” 6 month outsole durability guarantee. The quick low to the ground feel this shoe offers will have you sprinting around the court like no other making this a great speed oriented shoe for the aggressive player. It too is available for both men and women in some very fashionable color options and executions.

Adidas Barricade 2015 Great Wall Limited Edition Adidas continues their celebration of the 15 year anniversary of the release of the first Barricade with the fourth installment in their Limited Edition 2015 Wall Pack collection. This version pays tribute to the Great Wall of China. Weaving through China’s vast topography and spanning over 20,000 kilometers long, the Great Wall stands as a structure of protection and symbol of pride. According to Adidas’ footwear designers, they wanted to look beyond the watchtowers and take inspiration from the revered bamboo that surrounds the wall. The deep green color represents the lush countryside while the graphical elements on the upper are designed to reflect the strength and perseverance of bamboo shoots. Lastly, the lucky Chinese color of red is used throughout the shoe. As for the shoe itself, the new Barricade 2015 could very well be the best one yet. This Adidas model in the past has been normally associated with long break-in periods and stiff materials, however this latest version is ready to go right out of the box and is by far the softest, most comfortable Barricade ever produced! While still possessing the stability and durability we’ve come to expect from this iconic model, the 2015 version takes it to a whole new level when it comes to comfort and flexibility.

One of the most noticeable updates from the original model is the addition of a snug Dynamic Fit sleeve. For Nike and Andre Agassi this update represents an evolution in fit and comfort but maintains its on-court aesthetics that like many models in his signature line, resonate off the court as well. This retro is done up in one of the OG colorways for this model, which Andre Agassi actually wore in grand slam competition. The upper is constructed from leather and a nylon mesh in white, with voltage purple detailing with subtle pops of orange. This fresh update to an old classic is just what the doctor ordered if you long for the days when “image was everything”. Trust me, this model is a conversation starter!

Adidas Adizero Ubersonic Courtwalk Inspired by the high fashion exuding from NYC and Los Angeles, behold the all new Adizero Ubersonic Courtwalk. This new model built exclusively for the female tennis player features a woven upper making it more flexible while maintaining lightweight support and offers unmatched levels of comfort which will help you move with confidence at uber-fast speeds on the court. This new Adidas model is endorsed and worn by Ana Ivanovic who is currently ranked 6th in the world in women’s professional tennis. The TPU midsole helps lock in your foot for enhanced stability while Dual Density Sprint frame construction locks your heel in and prevents pronation. With added protection in high wear areas, aggressive movers will appreciate the traction of the durable rubber outsole built to stand up to abrasive courts. If style and performance is what you are all about then look no further, the Adidas Ubersonic Catwalk has it all and more. This shoe was built to look sleek while supporting your quick court movement. Who says women’s tennis shoes have to be boring? These will get you all the compliments one can handle!

Adidas Barricade 7 Novak Pro The number 1 ranked male tennis player in the world and multiple Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic now has his own special edition shoe. His signature logos are on the tongue and lateral side while the Reiki symbol on the medial side represents energy and protection. Lastly, the mountain printed on the insole is Mt. Kopaonik where Novak met his first tennis coach. The Barricade 7 Novak Pro offers the same excellent support and durability that he model has come to be known for while being introduced in a lighter weight, more comfortable package. Along with a classic 3 stripe look, the Barricade 7 Novak Pro offers an all-new seamless upper construction for better comfort and fit, keeping break-in to a minimum. The lateral outrigger is updated from the 3 claw stability feature to a more flex-friendly system, while the ADIWEAR6 outsole offers the superb combination of traction and durability. The Barricade 7 continues to live up to the Barricade's reputation as the ultimate hard court shoe and comes

standard with a six-month outsole durability guarantee. A great choice for the player that is serious about his tennis footwear. This signature model is available in three distinct colors and executions.

Nike Lunar Ballistec 1.5 This top-of-the-line model is inspired by the strength and speed of Rafael Nadal – the greatest clay court tennis player to have ever played the game. The Lunar Ballistec 1.5 has been engineered to be even more breathable. This ultra lightweight shoe allows aggressive tennis players enjoy lightning fast movement on the court along with an abundant amount of stability. This model utilizes the same Adaptive Fit construction that makes the Zoom Vapor 9.5 Tour so comfortable and stable. Individual dynamic Flywire cables can be tightened or loosened all the way up the lacing system for a perfect, customizable fit. As the cables tighten around the foot, they will offer a glove-like feel. Lunarlon technology in the midsole provides ultra lightweight cushioning and support that's also low to the ground. The data driven outsole and Drag-On cage in the upper give you extra durability where you need it most, and the shoe is backed by a six-month outsole durability guarantee. It's soft, comfortable and lightweight while still providing all the support and stability you need. The Lunar Ballistec is by far one of the very best ultimate all-around performance tennis shoes made available today. This model is available for both men and women and come in a variety of colors and executions.

Asics Gel Solution Speed 2 The new Gel Solution Speed 2 offers a low-profile sole geometry, yet features a more flared lateral forefoot for added stability. This lightweight addition to the Asics tennis shoe line offers an excellent combination of Asics hallmark running shoe technology with the lateral support needed for tennis. Features include GEL Cushioning System, Flexion Fit upper, and Personal Heel Fit foam collar for custom comfort. Borrowing from its predecessor, the 2nd incarnation of the GEL-Solution® Speed keeps the same low-profile sole geometry yet features a more flared lateral forefoot for added stability. A mid foot Trusstic System® provides improved torsional stability while the forefoot lateral propulsion design allows for responsiveness and control during intense play. Rearfoot and Forefoot GEL® Cushioning Systems combine with the lightweight Solyte® Midsole to provide excellent cushioning while the full-length Flexion Fit® uppers offer extreme comfort and support for even the most aggressive, agile players. Go Ahead and Touch the Art! By David Anthony Garcia, SA Monthly Art Editor

Art with a purpose is more than just an idea but, now it is a reality here in San Antonio. I have had the good fortune to participate in some tremendous group art shows specifically geared towards making the art a sensory and multifaceted experience for the vision impaired, special needs, and the community as a whole. A contemporary idea for all people. Innovators, “The Color of Blind” aims to help the visually-impaired experience art in a show catered to them. The show, which debuted 2013, is believed to have never before been attempted in Texas as a way to help the special needs community better connect with art. The Color of Blind 2013 held its inaugural show and had over 400 visitors. Since then, it has had a hung attendance in 2014 at Brick Market in Blue Star, and 2015 at VIA’s executive offices at the Grand. They recently installed touch specific pieces in the new low vision section at the San Antonio Main Library. I was honored to be selected as one of a handful of artists to exhibit there for a year. The Color of Blind is an art show conceived by Ms. Trina Bacon, a local art teacher, ceramist, tactile, and 3-D artist. It is Ms. Bacon’s hope to share her vision of art and education with the blind and sight-seeing communities. In a recent interview with Ms. Trina Bacon she revealed the following: “The idea is to have an art show catered to the visually impaired, but was not only for them it is for the entire community. Over the past few years it has ended up being very therapeutic and it is an art show that also includes children with disabilities such as Autism and Down Syndrome who find it very exciting to be able to touch the artwork. Ms. Trina Bacon The word is spreading. We were very excited that VIA had heard about us and asked us to do a show this past summer to kick off the Americans with Disabilities Act 70th anniversary. This is very exciting because it looks like VIA is going to become one of our main sponsors which we really do need because we are a nonprofit organization. Apparently all of the city organizations talk and one of the executives at VIA spoke to one of the head people at the Central Library about us, and the library became very interested because of the fact that they were opening up a new braille section low vision reading room. They wanted to incorporate art into this room to make it more appealing to the touch, tactile. It is beautiful. When you see someone experience art for the first time by touch your spirit is lifted, you feel fulfilled especially when they smile. They tell you that they have never been to an art show and have always wanted to know what one was like. Just because someone is disabled they still have that creative urge. A lot of the visuallyimpaired society are treated like second class citizens so it is very interesting to be able to incorporate such a simple thing as touch. It allows this society to come in and experience what they could not before. The wonderful artists in this community are ready and willing to make art for this cause. It challenges them to think outside of the box, painters in particular. They also want to be part of such an innovative yet simple concept of providing the opportunity to all people to Touch the Art! “ This local artist is proud to help spread the news with this story as well participate in such a wonderful concept. Stay tuned for more news about upcoming art shows, and the future first of its kind “Color of Blind” Museum! Thank You Ms. Trina Bacon, and her partner Ms. Kristel Andrea Orta-Puente for all of your hard work in making this happen in San Antonio!

Photographer of the Month

Waldinei Lafaiete By LJ Bottjer

! K C CLI When photographer, Waldinei “Wally” Lafaiete snaps an image it is more than just capturing a moment. He likens photography to conceptual art, enhanced by his subjects’ beauty and symmetry, simplicity and colors. Through his lenses he freezes time in the visual world his imagination inhabits. Living in San Antonio since 2009, the city’s cultural and ethnic diversity stimulates his South American soul. Lafaiete’s earliest memories began with the multifaceted atmosphere, rhythms and textures of his native São Paulo in Brazil. The constant movement of over 20 million residents, samba’s enticing pulse and the vibrancy of the annual Carnaval festivities drew him to the arts. Resourcefulness also began at a young age. Limited funds never stagnated his initial creativity. He learned flexibility, rather than focusing on exacting techniques which freed him to trust his instincts. Decades later, those traits still influence Lafaiete’s acrylic paintings and conceptual photography. Carnaval-style props of masks, feathers along with shiny and sparkling materials are often utilized in shoots. Beyond vivid accessories, Lafaiete merges his intuition and graphic design background with digital manipulations to achieve the looks he wants. Currently, his favorite subjects are people, especially aspiring and established models. Inspired by images of power behind David Vance and Michael Stokes’ wounded warriors and heavily muscled men portraits, his work strives for a similar stance. Lafaiete’s Brazilian roots allow him to view, with appreciation, the human form’s innate sensuality. Social media is used in finding unknown talent. Scanning Facebook and Instagram he often contacts a person. At a coffeehouse, they discuss aspirations and details involving a shoot. Model Randy Lewis, often seen on local television and ad campaigns, was such a discovery. Wally thrives on finding unknown talent! To capture a bride, a corporate executive or a professional model at their best requires putting them in an optimal frame of mind for the photo session. Lafaiete, about to graduate from the University of Incarnate Word with a Psychology degree, first gains any subject’s trust by suggesting they play a character on an audition. The more they embody the character, the more relaxed they become and the resulting tranquility produces more natural facial expressions. If that fails, joke telling – even bad ones – often brings the same results. With a camera always at his side, Lafaiete marvels at his life’s journey. Given an English dictionary at age seven, his curiosity propelled him to learn the language, thanks in part to his parents’ financial sacrifices. His schoolboy pledge to live in the United States came true as a San Francisco Bay area exchange student in 1996. Three years later love paved the way for his return. That love faded, but his passion for this country never diminished. In 2013, he became an American citizen. The event still fills him with pride. Wally’s gratefulness for the support and encouragement his dreams received has manifested into helping others accomplish their own realities- one photograph at a time. I received my Bachelor's Degree from Texas A&M University in Recreation and Parks in 1980 and launched a 24- year career in municipal parks and recreation with the City of Missouri City, in Southwest Houston. I fell in love with photography shooting special events, concerts, and park settings for the City and realized that I wanted to do it for a living. In 2001 I started my own photography business, Creative Images Photography, and by 2005 my company was doing so well I retired from the Parks business to concentrate full time on my new career. I am a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography and now have over 20 years of experience specializing in editorial, fashion and wedding photography. My work has been published in national and local magazines, calendars and many other publications. In 2013, I met the love of my life and relocated my business to San Antonio to be with her. We have a loft and photography studio in downtown on the historic Riverwalk. This past year I was very humbled to receive the “Best of 2015” award on Thumbtack as the #1 Creative Photographer in San Antonio! I have a passion for photographing people and get excited when I can capture that special expression, that special look, or that special moment. I strive to make people happy and think that shows in my work. I truly love every moment of what I do. 152 E. Invest in Yourself It’s easy to get lost in the world of skin care. Too many options. Do they even work? Maybe you’ve spent a lot of money on the magic creams with the gorgeous packaging from the high end department stores only to be disappointed that YOU don’t see a difference when you look in the mirror. You may be frustrated that the 40 people who wrote glowing reviews on a particular product seemed to love their results. Why isn’t it working for YOU yet? The blogger you follow on Instagram claims to be “obsessed” with her new eye cream so you bought it but YOUR skin didn’t respond well to it. Sigh. Perhaps this is why we shift our beauty budget to things like getting our nails done. This is a very temporary option but one with a seemingly higher guarantee for immediate satisfaction.

By Beauty Editor Crystal Holmes cnj.townes@gmail.com

It’s too important to just write skin care off as a lower priority. When you feel good about the way your skin looks, you present yourself differently. Better and with more confidence. Consider speaking in a boardroom with embarrassing acne. Consider going on a first date with layers of makeup to conceal old scars. Consider showing up at your daughter’s school and hearing her friends ask if you are her grandmother. At that point, it won’t matter if your nails are done or not. Whether you are committed to a monthly deep cleaning or you have a specific concern, there is no question that you should be taking care of your skin. Fortunately, there are places you can go with certified professionals and licensed aestheticians who have a passion for helping clients customize affordable treatment options. If that still sounds complicated, I’ll rephrase this. There are places you can go where you can fix almost any skin concern and allow you to feel like your most amazing self! Simple, and oh so worth it. Bio2 Skin Studio is a pioneer concept in the spa industry, offering effective solutions for hair removal (temporary and permanent, top-of-theline skin care treatments, teeth whitening and more. The professionals at the studio will recommend the most appropriate customized treatment just for you. One that will leave you feeling confident. As they say, it’s better to invest your dollars than spend them, and investing in yourself is always a good idea. See you at the studio!

You hated my coral bracelet. I made you cry when I confessed You are only real to me When my hands are clasped around The brittle cheekbones your skin fails to hide. Proud to be Latina Lorena Hernandez Monroe

Lorena Hernandez-Monroe was born in Puebla Mexico and moved to the beautiful state of Alaska with her mother Yolanda Hernandez Cuautle when she was seven years old. Her stepfather, Roberto Cuautle, inspired her early life aspirations ignited her early life aspirations of becoming an entrepreneur. Starting at the age of eight Lorena found herself in the center of the family fur business interpreting transactions and contracts for her stepfather as well as learning about designing all fur fashion, production, logistics, and marketing. The Hernández family is one of the first Hispanic families to venture into the northern territory of Alaska. Their mission was to be the premiere company in the fur industry; today they are the third largest furriers in North America. Since 1954 four generations of the Hernandez family have now built one of the most famous wholesale fur manufacturers in the world. Lorena, as part of this successful family, is proud to introduce to you her Bonita Furs. Lorena vividly remembers the words of her paternal grandfather Don Manuel Hernández who said ‘’Always remember that there are two types of dreamers - those who make their dreams come true and those who remain dreaming”. This message has accompanied her throughout her life. Today, Lorena credits the advice of her family and the experience she acquired from the family business to lead her to become the successful business woman she is today. Lorena says “The keys to success are persistence, taking one step at a time, and loving one another”. Each and every one of her dreams has become a reality through living out this daily mantra. Lorena’s biological father, Alfonso Roldan, instilled in Lorena a strong Christian Faith. Her father led her to accept Jesus Christ since the age of five always telling her; “God lives in your heart. The spirit of Jesus Christ accompanies you wherever you go and whatever you do. Jesus has all the wisdom to guide every decision of your life.” This wonderful gift of faith has been her guiding light throughout her life. Lorena has given her children and everyone that she is surrounded by the same wisdom that her father gave her as a gift. In fact Lorena feels that the most precious gift in life is to accept Christ in your heart and lead by His example. Lorena moved to Texas when she was twenty-two and introduced her own line of fashion and cosmetics. She came with a dream and was willing to do whatever it took to make her dream a reality. She launched her first company in Texas by door-to-door knocking introducing herself and sharing her vision of the fashion world - fulfilling everyone’s desire to look and feel better. From that early hard work to today Lorena has become known as a queen of fashion by fulfilling that vison with Bonita Natural. When a friend wanted to get out of the photography business Lorena bought the business and launched a fashion photography agency. Soon she was working with world-class photographers who taught her how to make women feel beautiful through the art of photography. Her success with photography led her to the pageant industry, where again she was very successful and won many awards including Mrs. Mexico International 1996 and Mrs. San Antonio 2006. 5 reasons why young

families need financial protection now

Gerardo “J.J.” Ramirez Jr. Partner, New York Life Insurance Co.

If you’ve played sports at any level, you know how powerful momentum can be. When it’s on your side, the game feels easy. When it’s not…well, things can snowball on you in a hurry. That’s why it’s so important for young families to start building financial security—and to do it right away. While this may seem like an impossible task in today’s economy, you may find it comforting to know that there are steps you can take—no matter how small—that can have a significant impact on your future. Take life insurance for example. While many young couples mistakenly believe that life insurance is too expensive, those who look closely are often pleasantly surprised. Let’s look at a few reasons why:

1. Life insurance is more affordable the earlier you buy it. The premiums on life insurance policies are partially based on age. In most cases, that means the earlier you buy, the lower your premiums will be. 2. Term life insurance provides economical protection. Term life insurance policies provide temporary protection (as opposed to the lifelong protection of permanent life), so they are initially less expensive. That means you have the ability to provide your family with more protection than you ever thought. 3. You may be able to upgrade later. Many term life policies allow you to convert to permanent life insurance if your needs and budget change. That way, you can lock in a lifetime of protection and never have to worry about being denied coverage due to a change in health. 4. You never know when something will happen. While we don’t like to admit it, tragic events can—and do— happen every day. For young families, this can be especially troubling since they often have the fewest assets to fall back on and the most time to live without your financial support. 5. You can use other assets more freely. Knowing you have this basic protection in place, you may be more willing to put your other financial resources to work. It isn’t easy for young families to make financial headway these days. But like most things in life, the sooner you start, the better off you’ll be. As we’ve seen, life insurance can be an affordable way to get the ball rolling, and to give your loved ones the financial protection they need, at the time when they need it most. James Franklin Green was born into an active duty U.S. Marine Corp. military family in Cherry Point, North Carolina. He has lived in San Antonio since age five and can trace his Texas roots back to early settlement days of German immigrants. Growing up in San Antonio, he along with his brother and two sisters were members of the water-ski team featured during the world’s fair at Hemisphere ’68. In 1970, he began as a stocker in the high end menswear retail industry working for the Satel family. With State Honors in Distributive Education at MacArthur High School, he discovered salesmanship to be his strong suit and rose quickly among the ranks at Satel’s. While attending San Antonio College, Jimmy accepted a full store management position, leading a team and operations at J. Cricket (an innovative, high fashion menswear retailer in North Star Mall). He was introduced to the fine jewelry industry in 1975, and so began his passion for a career in the business. This passion, strong work ethic along with educational course work from the Gemological Institute of America took Jimmy from sales associate to management; first, with Frost Brothers Precious Jewels and their affiliate fine jewelry salons at Godchaux’s, Metairie and New Orleans, Louisiana and back to San Antonio with Ben Adams Precious Jewels. In 1985, he accepted a position with Dennis Jewelry Company as general manager overseeing buying, marketing and all retail store operations. After two decades of service to the Dennis family Jimmy decided to fulfill his destiny by opening a fine jewelry salon of his own. It was Jimmy’s vision and passion for the trade, coupled with his mantra – incentive, initiative, imagination and inventiveness that afforded him the opportunity to turn his dream into a reality. Located in the Vineyard Shopping Center at the intersection of Blanco Road and North Loop 1604W, J Green Jewelers, opened in November 2005 as a full service fine retail jeweler. Within 5600 square feet, we have a full manufacturing facility, gemological lab, and two conference rooms. He is most proud of his membership with the Rey Feo Consejo Educational Foundation and is honored to be the candidate chosen by LULAC Council #2. Jimmy and J Green Jewelers have generously supported over 200 different local charities, including schools and churches. Jimmy is married to his wife of over 36 years, Pamela. They are blessed to have a son, James Preston and daughter, Rebekah Annaliese who share their father’s passion for jewelry and have followed him into the business at J Green Jewelers. He and Pam also are blessed with a granddaughter, Payton Michelle Green. He is fortunate to have his parents, AnnaBelle and Moss Green and his siblings all living in or near San Antonio. Jimmy is firmly rooted in his Christian faith, very involved with Community Bible Church including hosting a bi-monthly men’s bible study at J Green Jewelers.

TheSecretToSuccess.com

Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes said, "The person who has a plan, has their battle half won." You see, your plan is what takes you from where you are – to where you want to go. You can look at your plan as a map to your goals. Personally, I believe there simply is no better way to fail in life, then to not have a plan. That's why the phrase "failing to plan, is a plan to fail," has become a cliché. Too many people have this illusion, this illogical and ill-found notion that if you work hard - you'll be successful. However, I'm here to tell you, that's just not true! Because there's nothing more common than a hardworking, unsuccessful person these days. What separates the successful, from the unsuccessful, is the fact that successful people attacked their days methodically. They have a plan. And they work their plan. Successful people don’t confuse activity – with accomplishment. People who succeed in life, know that there’s a big difference between business, and significance. One of the lessons I've had to learn the hard way is: You can work your tail off, and not get anywhere. You have to work your tail off, and constantly be angling toward your goals. That’s where you plan comes in. Your plan is nothing more than a sequence of events, that helps you bring your goals to reality. Now I’ll warn you: Writing a plan is not easy, but I assure you, it's worth every ounce of energy you spend on it. It will save you a tremendous amount of time in the long run. Too often people talk about: The Art of the Start, and give the advice: Do something. Take action. Start now. But I disagree when they say this. Here's why: Let's say you lose your job and you go home and rearrange the furniture. Well...you did something – but not necessarily something that's going to have an impact on your future income, (or lack thereof). Undeniably, taking action can be powerful, dynamic and sexy! However, you need to take the right action. This is where your plan comes in. So my advice to you is this: Before you, "do something," "take action," or "start now," first!, make a plan. Because all too often, people are busy taking action, but it's the action akin to running on a treadmill - they're wearing themselves out, but they're not getting anywhere. You might be thinking - where do I begin ? And the best advice I can give you is to start with a vision of where you want to go. Thomas Watson was once asked, how he built IBM from his garage into a worldwide giant? Watson said, "I imagined what I wanted, and worked backwards." Watson explained, "One has to analyze the past, consider the present, and visualize the future." So write down where you want to go in life. Then outline the steps you'll follow to get there. Write down the goals you’ll need to achieve. Then write down your plan to achieve those goals. Because when you have a map; you'll always know which road to take. And unless you choose to ignore your plan, your plan will force you to be accountable for your own success – or failure. Let me close with this: There's a scene in the movie Alice in Wonderland, where Alice comes to a fork in the road. She sees a cat in a tree and asks the cat, "Would you please tell me which way I should go?" "That all depends a great deal on where you want to go," the cat responds. "I don't care much where," Alice says. "Then it doesn't matter which way you go," the cat replies. For more success tips visit: www.TheSecretToSuccess.com.

WOMEN in Business Diana Arévalo Executive Director Network For Young Artists 1800 Fredericksburg Rd. Suite 122 San Antonio,TX 78201 210-226-5611-Office 210-843-0797 Cell Email: nya@NYA.US WWW.NYA.US

The Woman Carrying the Torch for Affordable Music Education This year, Diana Arévalo became the Executive Director of the Network for Young Artists (NYA), a non-profit organization in the Deco District of San Antonio. The mission of the organization is to promote art and culture through affordable music classes in voice, guitar, percussion, keyboard, and dance. With the membership, a student can take as many classes as he/she wishes to attend for a monthly fee of $12.50. Also, with their membership, students are provided opportunities to showcase their talents through public performances throughout the San Antonio metroplex. In a short time, Arévalo transformed the Network for Young Artists from students performing at local restaurants to expanding performance opportunities to: Pica Pica Plaza, performing on the main stage at the Fiesta Poster Unveiling t the Tobin Center, West San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Legacy Awards, Dream Week, performing at the Hard Rock Café for a Showcase, and even booking her students as the opening act for the Urban Cowboy 35th Anniversary Reunion Tour: Mickey Gilley & Johnny Lee at the Majestic Theater. “I love being able to work one on one with our students and see them build up their self confidence through their performances.” With the help of the Board President, the organization hired a two-time Grammy Award winning vocal instructor, Rebecca Valadez, who has a history of touring the world as a back-up singer to Janet Jackson on the Velvet Rope Tour. According to Diana, she worked for Rebecca Valadez handling her public relations at the American Grammy Awards. “She is amazing with the kids in the studio. She really cares about seeing each one of them improve whether it is in our classrooms at NYA or when she teaches our free classes at Haven for Hope.” Furthermore, she has incorporated a Master Class session into the after-school program where notable musicians come to meet the students and talk about their journey in music such as Little Joe and the band Making Movies. In addition, under Arévalo’s leadership, a new program emerged, the NYA Student Ambassador program. “It’s important to have our students be recognized for their accomplishments and be a role model for their peers.” 12 year old student, Isabel Marie Sanchez (who is signed with Q Productios) is the current NYA Student Ambassador who has performed all over San Antonio representing the organization. “Isabel represents the best of NYA, because she is determined the learn her craft, and incorporates NYA students in her performances.” Under Diana Arévalo’s leadership, the Network for Young Artists has received both a national and local award for their commitment to promoting music education to the youth of the community. These awards include the 2015 American Latino Influencer Awards-Arts & Culture Honoree from the Friends of The National Museum of the American Latino, and the San Antonio City Council District 7 Excellence in Leadership Award- Excellence in Cultural Arts. “These awards are long overdue. The founder, “Coach” Terry Lowry worked so hard for many years. We have maintained his mission while having a new vision for NYA as we head to the future.” While Arévalo’s success at the Network for Young Artists should come as no surprise, she remains humble about her position and experience. “I see that these kids want to learn anything and everything about music. I may be the Executive Director, but I see myself as the person that creates opportunities for them to succeed.”

2016 CHEVY CRUZE By Dan Cooper dancooper09@gmail.com

Automotive information website Edmunds.com describes the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze as a "refinement" over the "solid" nature of last year's model. We could not agree more with this. Gone is the questionable grill work treatment, replaced by a much more serious looking face. The overall appearance is slightly less angular and is thus smoother and more aerodynamic looking. But the biggest difference in the bodywork is in the car's length. This is General Motors' new compact car platform, which will be shared globally among several models. Being stretched to a new longer length alleviates one of the problems with the prior model. With the longer wheelbase there is now more adequate rear seating space as well as more trunk room. Standard equipment is a 1.4 L turbocharged engine rated at 40 mpg, highway. The most economical option is the 2.0 L Clean Turbo Diesel, which is rated at 46 mpg, highway and can stretch the car's range to 700 miles on a tank of diesel. This engine tops the Volkswagen Jetta TDI in eight separate categories according to GM literature. Combine the light responsive handling with a surprising amount of engine performance (151 hp), and you have a very pleasant driving experience that won't break the bank at the pump. In addition, this engine is far cleaner burning. It emits 90% less nitrogen oxide and particulate matter than previousgeneration diesels. Retained is the impressive Chevrolet MyLink touch screen centrally located and dominating

the dashboard. This is the first car in its class to offer available built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi. But aside from the connectivity features of the MyLink system, available technology options include Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist (to warn you about unintentionally drifting out of your lane), and Rear Cross-traffic Alert. Couple these with the standard equipment rear-vision camera and the car practically drives itself out of dangerous situations. As company literature claims, Cruze gives you more than you would ever expect in a compact car. Bucking the long established trend of introducing new models in the final months of the previous year, Cruze production delays caused the release of this car to be bumped well into 2016. This delay serves two strangely beneficial purposes, however. First, the delay adds an element of suspense, heightening customer anticipation. And second, while Cruze is GM's hottest selling model, there are still some 2015s left in inventory. The delay offers both GM and buyers an opportunity. It means the 2015s will likely be reduced further in price to move them prior to the release of the 2016s. With the production delay there are as yet no road tests or comprehensive reviews, but word has it that this sporty little surprise package is going to be very interesting. So, if you can wait until sometime in the early spring of 2016 for your new car, this is one you should consider waiting for.

Meteorologist of the Month

Adam Caskey Meteorologist Adam Caskey’s enthusiasm for the weather dates back to an early age, whenhe developed a natural curiosity for the inner workings of the atmosphere with a distinct interest in storms. As Adam grew older, his interest in the weather blossomed. Adam followed his passion for the weather at the University of North Dakota, where he learned from some of the best and earned a degree in Meteorology. His first job on TV was at Prairie Public Television in Grand Forks, North Dakota followed by KVRR-TV (FOX) in Fargo, North Dakota. Most recently, Adam spent 11 years as a meteorologist at WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C., where he covered all sorts of weather, from snowy nor’easters to summertime severe weather. From North Dakota to the nation’s capital, Adam has experienced temperatures ranging from 40 degrees below zero to scorchers over 100 degrees. While in the Washington, Adam earned the “Certified Broadcast Meteorologist” designation by the American Meteorological Association. A native Minnesotan, Adam loves to fish and enjoys the outdoors. He also enjoys making thermometers from scratch and can often be found refining his hobby as he takes pride in an accurate homemade thermometer. His segment “Thermometer Thursday” takes viewers into the craft of homemade thermometers from blowing the glass to putting the final touches on his thermometers, and he enjoys giving them away to viewers via a random drawing. Adam loves living in San Antonio and thinks it’s the perfect fit for him and his wife along with their three children. Like Adam on Facebook: www.facebook.com/caskeyweather

Are You Ready for a Programmable Thermostat? by Dan Cooper dancooper09@gmail.com With the cooler temperatures of winter upon us in San Antonio, It behooves us to remember how to save money while staying comfortable at home. Setting your thermostat is not something most of us think about until the heat of summer or the cold of winter, but it is more than just a seasonal consideration. And perhaps the single most beneficial thing you can do to stay comfy while saving on your energy bill, is to convert to a programmable thermostat. Every seasonal change brings with it the necessity for us to get used to different temperatures as our daily "normal" conditions. This time of year it just seems so chilly until we get accustomed once again to the colder outdoor temperatures. The same thing is true about the indoor environment of our homes. After all, we just spent all summer thinking how warm 75 was and how much more cool and comfortable 70 felt. But these days, 70 feels downright warm by contrast. It takes some time, but our bodies do adapt to the conditions of our surroundings. That is why it is important from the aspect of economics to adapt our bodies as rapidly as possible during seasonal changes, and in fact, all year. If we make the conscious effort to adjust our bodies instead of the thermostat, we not only save money on the fuel bills but also act responsibly by maintaining a healthy "green" environmental approach. An extra layer of clothing when indoors can make all the difference in the world in how comfortable we feel. But there is one thing you can do that could be more beneficial than anything else. Upgrading to a programmable thermostat is an investment that typically pays for itself in a single year of use. And for the combination of comfort, convenience, and savings, a programmable thermostat is almost impossible to beat. Heating and cooling usually accounts for up to 45 percent of a home's energy bill. That means a substantial savings in this area can have a dramatic impact on overall energy costs. It is estimated that you can save up to 20 percent off your fuel bill over the course of a year. That is a savings that is hard to argue with. Programmable thermostats make it easy to save in comfort by automatically adjusting to your family's daily schedule. It is a set-and-forget process. The thermostat does all of the thinking for you. In the winter months it is still suggested that you keep the indoor temperature at 70 degrees or cooler. Some people find this too cool, but the fact is, every degree warmer than this costs you money and depletes energy resources. But perhaps the best way to conserve energy is to reduce your home's temperature when no one is present. That brings us to the primary benefit of having a programmable thermostat. You can set it to automatically adjust the temperature to your home's usual pattern of occupancy. When everyone is out of the house to work or school, the temperature can drop to the low 60s, heating up only just before everyone gets home. And after bedtime a cooler temperature usually will not be noticed. Some people actually prefer a cooler temperature for sleep. You might be surprised how much you will enjoy it, too. Save money for your family and save natural resources for your country. A programmable thermostat can do both while keeping you comfortable automatically. It is the near perfect blend of convenience, comfort, and cost savings.

The Un-Green Disposable Plastic Bottle by Dan Cooper dancooper09@gmail.com What is your worst habit ecologically speaking? For many Americans, it is the habitual use of single-use disposable plastic bottles for beverages. It seems like such a little thing, doesn’t it? But it is bigger than you might think. Soda pop bottles were bad enough, but the bottled water industry has exploded so remarkably since the 1970s that it is now on the verge of overtaking sodas for the number one spot in beverage sales. It is relatively easy to see the disposal problem these containers represent. But the bad news goes quite a bit deeper than that. First of all, water is free almost everywhere. So, why do Americans shell out for bottled water? Some do it because water is generally healthier than other beverages. Some do it because of fears surrounding tap water safety, particularly in light of the expanding use of hydraulic fracturing by the fossil fuel industry (ironically, to make more plastic bottles). But the rationale for most of the reasons comes from marketing. In 1977, the French company, Perrier, launched an advertising blitz in the U.S., and the market positively exploded after that. In 1970 there were only 16 brands being sold in this country. By 2012 that number was 195. And every one of them has a marketing department telling us how bottled water is cleaner, safer, tastier, and just plain better for us than tap water. Even though none of that is necessarily true. In fact, most bottled water today is tap water, put in a bottle to turn a profit. And if that makes you feel a little sheepish wait until you find out how much water is used to manufacture that bottle. The answer: three times as much as is in the bottle. If you can put down the bottle and go back to tap water, you could be making the single greatest contribution possible to preserving a quickly diminishing natural resource, not to mention saving all that plastic from ending up in landfills or the ocean. The U.S. is the world’s leading market for bottled water, where well over nine billion gallons are consumed annually. When you factor in the extra 30 billion gallons it takes to make the bottles, you are talking about a lot of water. And a lot of plastic bottles that have to “go somewhere.” Americans throw out more than 2.5 million tons of these bottles every year. Oh, and by the way, it takes 17 million barrels of oil every year to manufacture disposable water bottles. Do your part. Put down the bottle. Or at least cut down on consumption and re-use those bottles instead of throwing them in the trash. There is also now an alternative. Red Leaf Water is available at some Albertsons supermarkets. The Red Leaf bio bottle is the first fully biodegradable plastic bottle. Ask for it. Going Green requires thinking Green, and part of that thought process is being a responsible consumer. As usual, it is the “little things” that make the biggest difference in the long run.

Icon Talks for Icon to Ican ®

By: Charities Editor, Desiree H. Serna, C.N.P., M.P.A.

Do we really know the difference between success and significance? Many of us associate success with personal wealth. However, we need to look deeper to acknowledge our own significance in terms of value, impact and impressions on others. It is said that true significance comes from adding value to others…and you cannot have true success without significance. Icon Talks® and its charitable counterpart, Icon to Ican, will feature a monumental event January 2016 in San Antonio which articulates the message of “success to significance.” Grammy-winning music artist, author and producer, Chaka Khan, will share her journey of rising to prominence and celebrity as one of the most iconic artists of all times. Khan will address the intimate audience by explaining her recognized core keys to success and highlighting monumental differences between success and significance. “We are excited to have an artist of this magnitude join us for this event,” says John Hartsfield, co-founder of Icon Talks®, “her story is incredibly amazing and will definitely move the audience.” “This is just one of many intimate and inspirational events Icon Talks® will host.” Hartsfield says. The event will be at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts on January 28, 2016, which also includes a private concert for attendees. Proceeds from this event will directly benefit Icon Talks®’ charitable counterpart, Icon to Ican, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in San Antonio. Icon to Ican’s mission is to create significant impacts by providing mentorship and empowerment programs for disadvantaged and disabled youth to help them overcome physical, social and economic barriers. 3 ways to become closer to your child By Dino Hernandez, LPC

Many parents wish for closer relationships with their children. Whatever your goals for a strong connection with your child, it all starts with communication. Effective communication is vital in order to have a healthy and peaceful coexistence with our children, but sometimes it seems like an uphill battle when we feel that our words are somehow not registering with our children. Any parent can relate to the feeling of repeating instructions over and over or simply feeling ignored when they ask their child to do something. It can turn into a cycle of frustration for both the parent when they feel ignored and the child when mom or dad is mad at them. Here’s the good news: you can improve the quality of your communication – and your relationship – with children of any age. Here are three steps in the right direction. Set the stage for success. This may mean speaking to them on their level, and being very specific with your directives. Many times kids are presented with a list of things to do, and they may only hear the first or last of your directives. This is especially true for children who have a difficult time with focus and concentration. First, avoid distractions when communicating with your child. This means muting the TV or pausing the video game. Second, make eye contact. A distracted child will often shake their head and say yes without truly internalizing what you are asking of them. And last, but certainly not least, have your child repeat your directive. This removes the “I didn’t hear you” excuse. Break things down. It is also very important to break things down into chunks that are manageable for your child. Instead of giving a lengthy list of things the child needs to do, give them one at a time. More importantly, define and clarify what you expect from the child. For example, arguments often ensue when a child is asked to clean their room. An adult’s definition of clean and a child’s may be very different. For the child this may be shoving everything under the bed or in the closet. So instead of simply stating “Clean your room,” your instructions might go something like this: “Pick up your dirty clothes, place them in the hamper, put toys away and empty your waste paper basket.” Again you may need to break this into 4 steps rather than one general statement. Catch them doing good. I emphasize this point repeatedly with every family I work with. As parents it is so easy to identify the misbehaviors and mistakes our children make. However, it’s just as important, if not more so, to identify your child’s strengths and positive behaviors. Imagine if the only interaction you had with your supervisor at work was negative. The only

Psychotherapist, Outpatient Service Dino Hernandez graduated from St. Mary’s University, with a Master of Arts in Community Counseling. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor, who has been in practice for over 12 years. Dino is also bilingual, allowing him to provide services to our Spanish-speaking populations. He has a great deal of experience dealing with a myriad of mental health issues, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, and Mood disorders.

feedback you receive on the job are comments like these: “You did not do this the right way.” “Why is your paperwork always incorrect?” “Are you ever on time?” If this was the extent of your conversations with your supervisor, you would not be a very happy employee. Even as adults our sense of self-worth and self-esteem sky rockets when we are praised. This is especially true for our children. No matter how hard you have to work to find things to praise them about, it is very much worth the effort. We need to remember that discipline is not simply punishment, it is educating our children. It is teaching them what not to do and why, and teaching them the right things to do and why as well. We want to correct and hopefully extinguish negative behaviors, but at the same time reinforce and acknowledge the positive things our kids do. You will be amazed at how quickly the mood and attitude of your household can become more positive if you simply start catching your kids doing good. For some children, almost every interaction with an adult may seem negative: teachers getting after them for not following classroom rules, coaches correcting their performance in practices and games, principals enforcing the dress code, etc. Why not make home a place where they get those pats on the back for even the simple things like putting a dish in the sink, or not leaving their backpack on the floor? This is a powerful reminder to your child that you notice the good things they are doing and that you appreciate them. All of us, no matter what our age, benefit from hearing such positive feedback. With effective communication, you are helping to build (or strengthen) a bridge between you and your child. This is a crucial mission for any parent, because these bridges are very important as a child grows. For example, adolescents face many challenges, pitfalls and even dangers in today’s world. If your child can see you as a safety net, someone who will catch them and not let them fall all the way, you can both sleep easier at night. As parents, I’m sure many of us dread the teenage years. I feel a sense of sadness and loss thinking about my children caring more about their friends approving of their clothes, music, or appearance. It is natural for teenagers to strive for independence and begin to pull away from parents and seek approval from peers. But if you’ve invested the effort in building these bridges and creating a climate of open, honest communication, you can take comfort in knowing that you have a strong foundation to weather the challenges that these years bring. A pattern of effective communication lets your child know that they can come to you when they need you.

Charitable Planning Basics Giving to Charity May Help Decrease Taxes While Supporting Causes That Matter to You You can give to charities like a church, a college, or another qualified charitable organization in your will or during your lifetime. Gifting takes into consideration your family’s income needs versus the tax benefits, and enjoying the act of giving during your lifetime. Giving freely during your lifetime and after you pass may help reduce federal income taxes, capital gains taxes, and estate and gift taxes significantly.

Giving During Your Lifetime Generally, a lifetime gift to a charity allows the donor to take an income tax deduction. Before a significant gift is made, be sure to seek tax advice and verify the deduction limits. Also, gifting to charities highly appreciated assets during your lifetime could be a good strategy; in addition to the income tax deduction, you may bypass the capital gains taxes that would be owed if you decided to sell the highly appreciated assets yourself.

Options for Charitable Giving Donor-advised funds are charitable giving programs that are generally run by public charities or financial institutions. These allow you to give with certain income tax deductions and help meet the needs of the causes that are important to you. A Private Foundation may also be an option if you have an interest in philanthropy. You can create your own Private Foundation and make donations up to certain income limits. Private Foundation managers maintain control over the investment of their foundation assets and decide which charities receive grants from the foundation. Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRT) allow you make a donation to this type of trust you create and then receive payments during your lifetime. This will generate a payout from the trust to yourself or another beneficiary during your lifetime, or for a specified term. The remaining assets go to the charity of your choice after your death. This may include a Private Foundation that you create as an option. If you possess substantially appreciated assets (like real estate or stocks), current capital gains tax on the assets could potentially be reduced by donating the assets to a CRT.

Gifting Using Retirement Accounts Retirement assets may be good for donations because they can be among the highest taxed assets in any estate. Leaving your retirement account to a charity has the benefit of the charity not having to pay income taxes on your donation when it receives money from your retirement account. The rules for 401(k)s and other qualified retirement plans are similar to those for IRAs. If you are married and you want to designate beneficiaries other than your spouse, you may need written consent from your spouse.

Accused of a crime? What to expect in case you are:

Few things in life are as stressful as being accused of a crime. This is especially true if you are immediately detained and arrested. I have been practicing criminal law in Texas for almost 28 years in one form or another. I spent the first eight years of my career prosecuting violent and non-violent offenders, alike, in both the Bexar County and Harris County District Attorney’s offices as an Assistant District Attorney. Additionally, I logged seven years as City Magistrate Judge for San Antonio, where my primary responsibility was to review paperwork that accompanied the arrest of a person to determine if there was probable cause to hold that individual and charge him with a crime. I now have spent the last 20 years or so of my career as a criminal defense attorney defending those accused of various state and federal crimes with varying degrees of severity. I provide this background to explain that the information I provide herein comes, not from a textbook or internet research, but from years of being in the daily trenches of the criminal justice system. Having said that, let us review how a typical criminal case begins. It most often starts with an allegation of wrongdoing. In Texas, most crimes can be categorized in two distinct groups: misdemeanors and felonies. The first group involves a possible fine and jail time, depending on whether it is classified as a Class B misdemeanor (fine up to $2,000 and months jail) or a Class A misdemeanor (fine up to $4,000 and 1

year in jail). Examples of this are assault causing bodily injury, minor possession of drugs such as marijuana, theft under $1,500.00 and a first or second arrest for driving while intoxicated. The second, more serious, category of offenses are called felonies. These are the type usually involving more severe allegations of violence; and may include use of a weapon and the presence of serious bodily injury or death. Examples of this include aggravated robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated sexual assault and murder. Felonies may also involve large amounts of controlled substances or drugs as well as theft of $1,500.00 or more. Punishment ranges for these offenses include a fine of up to $10,000 and various prison ranges depending on the level of the felony. A third degree range is 2 to 10 years in state prison, a second degree carries a range of between 2 to 20 years of incarceration and a first degree punishment is from 5 to 99 years or life. If one is accused of capital murder, upon a finding of guilt by a jury, that person may be subject to execution by lethal injection upon specific findings by a jury. A person accused of either a misdemeanor or felony may be charged in one of two ways. The first is what is called an on-site arrest. If the police are called to the scene of a crime they may conduct an immediate investigation which may involve identifying a perpetrator and a possible victim. They may also speak to witnesses and gather whatever physical evidence is available. In the case of a shooting or sexual assault, a crime scene unit may be dispatched to gather any forensic evidence that may be available for a potential trial. Once a perpetrator is identified, the police must decide whether there is sufficient evidence or “probable cause” to believe the person committed a crime. If so, the police may arrest the person on site and take him to be magistrated and formally charged. The second method where a person may be charged with a crime and brought to court is called an “at-large” arrest. In this case, law enforcement may conduct an investigation based on a complaint, gather evidence, interview witnesses and then when their investigation is complete, file the case with the district attorney’s office. This is the manner in which most white-collar crime and other labor-intensive investigations are filed. With this second method, a prosecutor will seek to obtain an indictment if it is a felony or simply file a complaint, if it is a misdemeanor. Once a case is filed or indicted, the court process begins and the accused is made to answer the allegation in a criminal court. If the accused is arrested and brought before a Magistrate Judge, he will be informed of the charges and be given a bond, if appropriate. It is at this time that the accused can make arrangements to be released from jail. If the arrested person, now referred to as the “defendant” is released, he will be notified of a future court date. It is at this juncture, if he has not already done so, that the defendant should consider hiring competent counsel to represent him in court. If the defendant is financially unable to obtain an attorney, the court may arrange to have one appointed for him. The first court appearance, called the arraignment setting, is designed for the defendant and his attorney to familiarize themselves with the State’s file called the discovery. An accused has a constitutional right to a jury trial whereby the state has the burden to prove the allegation beyond a reasonable doubt. If the defendant, his attorney and the prosecutor cannot reach an agreement to resolve the case called a “plea bargain”, the defendant’s only remedy is to go to trial in an attempt to gain an acquittal or force the state to dismiss the case in the event they are not prepared to move forward. A defendant and his attorney may have to undergo several court settings, called resets, before the case reaches a final resolution. The foregoing is a brief glimpse into what to expect if you or someone you know is accused of a crime. Remember, that you have a right to an attorney at every stage of the criminal process and it would serve you well to keep that in mind.

Javier Salazar FOR BEXAR COUNTY

SHERIFF My life as a Bexar County resident began at Fort Sam Houston on December 7th, 1970. I was born into an Air Force Family as the youngest of 6 kids. My happily married but exhausted parents gave us everything we needed, not necessarily everything we wanted. THAT’S what hard work is for! When I was still very young, my Dad, Placido Salazar , retired from the USAF and got into the Radio/TV business. My Mom, Maria, was a stay-at-home mom, before that was the term for it. She sewed and sold cosmetics to help make ends meet (and to sneak me off to the mall for some of those wants when Dad wasn’t paying attention). As my much older siblings began to leave home to start their own respective lives, I grew up learning Radio/TV and public speaking from my Dad. I had a very happy childhood, attending public schools in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD. I played sports, got into acting, and made friends of all kinds. The beautiful thing about growing up near military bases is the wide variety of cultures and races a kid is exposed to. The schools I went to weren’t your typical “cliquish” schools, but ones where everyone was friends with everyone else. Cowboys, bikers, skaters, goth-kids, jocks, prom queens, all races-we all just got along. That’s where I learned the value of family and how to love everyone for what’s inside. I graduated from Samuel Clemens High School in 1989, started college in the ACCD, and got my first real job as a bartender. Even at the age of 18, I was listening to the adult problems and even offering advice to my bar customers. Although I loved the human interaction, I craved something more fulfilling. I knew I wanted to enter public service, but how? So I kept at my job and my education, meeting new people every night and attending college courses during the day. That’s where I learned I was pretty good at listening, communicating, and helping others solve problems. At 21, I joined the San Antonio Police Department. Although my Dad most likely won’t admit it, I know he was disappointed that I turned away from Radio/TV. I graduated with Cadet Class 92-B, and started my dream career with a group of wide-eyed young recruits whom I’ve literally grown up with for the past 23 years. Not always the perfect police officer, I always did my best to “be a good cop”, like my Dad constantly reminded me I needed to be. That was in the days of the LAPD/Rodney King case, which drew national attention, and changed so many things about police workand public perceptions of officers everywhere. That’s where I learned to hold myself accountable so someone else wouldn’t have to. Just like veteran officers told me they would, my first 5 years flew by. I served as a patrolman in several areas of the city, as well as on Downtown Bike Patrol, and in the

SAFFE Unit. That’s where I learned about Community Policing, and everything a true police/citizen partnership can do to address and prevent crime. My next 10 years were spent as a Detective and Sergeant in the elite SAPD Narcotics Unit. I participated in undercover operations at every level and eventually supervised groups of detectives in some of the most hazardous operations known to police work. That’s where I learned to lead my fellow officers into a calculated risk, and to make sure everyone went home at the end of the night. In 2008, I went to work in the Office of the Chief. I handled many of the day-to-day operations of the Office of the Chief. I also supervised the prestigious Executive Protection Detail. The intense high-speed training and quiet professionalism of the officers in this unit left me in awe. I was charged with ensuring the security of City Hall, top-level government officials, and visiting dignitaries. It was a big responsibility with big decisions, but one I enjoyed immensely. That’s where I learned that rank and responsibility are two entirely different things. I left the Chief’s Office to become an Internal Affairs Investigator. My job was to investigate allegations of officer misconduct. Contrary to what is seen on TV, where I.A. cops are portrayed as heartless “badge collectors”, I worked with a group of dedicated professionals who worked just as hard to deactivate false allegations as they did to hold the culpable officers accountable. That’s where I learned that seeking the truth is the ultimate goal, even when it isn’t the easiest thing to do. In 2012, I became the spokesman for the SAPD. I jumped into every assignment with enthusiasm. I saw my job as that of a salesman, and my product was the SAPD. The public was my customer, and Radio/TV, Social Media, and Newsprint were my market place. I soon learned that the public TRULY wants to hear good things about their public servants. Thanks to the true professionals of the SAPD, I had a product that literally sold itself! All I had to do was tell the story. As my job expanded, so did my responsibilities. I was able to become more pro-active in my approach. I went on the offensive and helped start community outreach programs, like UNIDOS, Coffee With The Cops, and The Superhero Drop; to name a few. I hosted a TV Show, Behind TheBadge, and got back to the true roots of what my Dad taught me so many years before. I took a budding social media platform and, with my dedicated staff, turned it into a nationally recognized program. Thanks to the faith shown to me by Chief William McManus and Chief Anthony Trevino, I served as a De Facto member of SAPD’s Command Staff. I learned from these two gentlemen that the measure of a true leader is how he or she builds up and encourages all people under their command to achieve their goals and be all they can be. We are ALL representatives of our department. That’s where I learned to use my strengths and love of communication to highlight an entire agency, to remain an approachable public servant, to ensure transparency, and to gain and maintain the public trust. That’s also where I learned the meaning of Servant Leadership and Justice Based Policing, among many other valuable tools. Along the way of my career, I met my wife of the past 15 years, Sarah. Together, we have raised two daughters, Brooke (21) and Isabella (14). Sarah works as an elementary school teacher and we rely on each other for guidance and encouragement. We want nothing more for our children than happiness and success, and try everything in our power to give them everything they need, along with a whole lot of wants. As a family; we enjoy antiquing, Dallas Cowboys Football, Spurs Basketball, fellowship at OLPH Catholic Church, our many pets, and each other’s company. Our girls are our pride and joy, and we try to support and guide them in everything they do. I have to admit they’ve taught me a few things along the way. That’s where I’ve learned that sometimes the teacher is also the student. We still live in Bexar County, and I marvel every day at the way it continues to change before my eyes. I still live in the area I grew up in and have gotten to see my kids grow up in the same public schools I attended. Although I’ve aged and matured, my love for my Bexar County home has never faltered. I want to see Bexar County continue to evolve, but never to lose that “small town feel”, which it clearly hasn’t. The same country roads where my Dad taught me to drive his old Camaro are now busy residential streets. I still enjoy driving around the area with my windows down and music blaring. That’s where I learned the words of the country song, “You’re always 17 in your home town…” hold true.

I’m now running for Bexar County Sheriff. In the words of a very good friend and well-known man of faith who works in local government, “Concentrate on the PROCESS of an election. The RESULTS are up to GOD.” So that’s what I’m doing. I’m also a man of faith, and I place myself in the hands of GOD every day, through prayer. What ultimately happens in 2016 is out of my hands. I can’t make the vote go my way, but I can and do pray for guidance and wisdom. I let those qualities guide my actions and public service. All I can do is give it my best efforts every single day and see what I get to learn next.

There’s A New Law in Town

Open Carry Shooting straight about what you need to know.

It is important to know what your rights are – either as a gun owner or as a property owner who does not want to allow people with guns into your business. On June 13, 2015, Texas legalized the licensed open carry of handguns. That law has gone into as of effect January 2016. What should you know? 1.

The traditional conceal carry law is unaltered – a currently concealed handgun license will automatically allow open carry;

2.

A person must have a license either issued by the State of Texas or by a state recognized by the State of Texas in order to carry either openly or concealed;

3.

If a person is carrying a handgun and it becomes visible, it must be carried in either a shoulder or belt holster;

4.

A person convicted of certain crimes cannot carry a firearm, and minors under 18 years old cannot openly carry without a parent present (An easy rule of thumb: If you can lawfully possess a firearm, you can open carry with a license);

5.

Law allows the open carry of revolvers and semi-automatic weapons;

6.

No additional training is required and you can renew your license online;

7.

A license holder can open carry in his car or boat if the handgun is in a shoulder or belt holster;

8.

A person with a license can open carry where they currently conceal carry with the exception of colleges and universities;

9.

Private property owners have the right to refuse open carry or conceal carry patrons – the business must post a 30.06 sign (to ban concealed carry) and a 30.07 sign (to ban open carry).

10. Violations of 30.06 or 30.07 are a Class C misdemeanor unless the patron is personally told to leave and refuses, then it becomes a Class A misdemeanor. Gun safety is one of the most polarizing debates going on right now. Given the daily headlines of violence involving guns, it promises to continue be disputed in the Texas Legislature and in and around restaurants, coffee shops, toy stores, grocery stores, and other business that allow or prohibit the open or conceal use of weapons on their premises.
