Waterfront of Contemporary Art 9

During the progression of Lugano from the period of the 19th century canton to the 20th century bank city, the city experienced a lack of landscape planning and forethought, and now as the city has progressed past the stage of being a bank city, Lugano is faced with the issue of properly defining its position as a waterfront city, and finding its new identity.

This proposal offers an opportunity for the city to exploit its position on the waterfront, take advantage of the new interest and investment into art and culture- as initiated by the introduction of the LAC (Lugano Arts Centre) and continue in this direction to establish the new identity of Lugano as a hub of art and culture in Europe.

Fading the line between the water and the city, and between art and the public, the resulting new collective of public spaces and open galleries aim to stitch together the existing networks of culture and leisure as the new economic driving forces and replace what was once dominated by the banks with the world’s first waterfront dedicated to contemporary art.

The new waterfront masterplan sees a new journey from the LAC to Parco Ciani; a dynamic passage through a variety of interwoven art galleries, public spaces, activity spaces and leisure spaces. Public spaces are extended over the water as the water is extended into public spaces, offering a new experience of Lugano as a waterfront city. Public spaces are imagined not only for public use, but for how they can be adapted to host and support different cultural activities.

A series of buildings are propsed to activate the waterfront and serve the public and art spaces. AN EVOLVING WATERFRONT LANDSCAPE- ALTERNATIVES The waterfront is designed with a range of distinctive spaces which offer various opportunities for public and cultural activity. The program is intended to activate the waterfront throughout the 4 seasons, as well as during the day and night.

ADAPTABLE FLOATING PLATFORM

The floating platforms 8 and 9 are constructed from light-weight modular elements which enable the platforms to be assembled and disassembled in various proportions and configurations as necessary. The modules of the floating garden are interchangeable with those of the floating art platform, and can create a variety of spaces. The floating garden functions as phyto-remediation filters for the lake water and a haven for birds and insects. The floating art platform functions as art space, or an art island.

The amphitheatre is designed to accommodate performance art, sculptures, screenings such as in an out-door cinema, as well as a water-square which functions as a playful public space when the water levels are higher. The prescence of the vertical poles enable the space to be lit, screens to be constructed and shadings to be added as required by the space.

Surrounded by a new waterfront promenade and stairs which descend into the water, this semi-enclosed portion of the lake is intended for water activities throughout the summer, and offers interesting opportunities for art installations and leisure.

The level of Lugano’s old town square is manipulated to provide the opportunity for water to enter the city. When the water levels are low, the old town square forms a pathway to the water; between a variety of public spaces and open galleries. When the water levels are high, the old town square is submerged and the new town square becomes an island of public space, connected only by one bridge leaving the lower levels navigable only by

On the edge of the commercial area of the city, and inbetween the parco Ciani and the new boating Club House, the level of the landscape is lowered to a sunken plaza, which provides the opportunity for markets and events or series, thematic or pop-up exhibitions.

The modular floating platform is a flexible space that can only be reached by boat, and that can be assembled to suit a multitude of functions such as an art exhibition island, a diving or water sports arena etc. The platform can be dissassembled and relocated to other areas of the waterfront where needed.
