Spaces we love Life’s certainly interesting. The New Year 2015 marks yet another beginning of an interesting slate of spaces we create and style. He has extensive working experience with such organizations as the World Bank, where he was a Senior Educational Economist, CARE International in Kenya where he was the Regional Coordinator, University of Nairobi Enterprises and Services Limited where he was the Deputy Managing Director and the Business Development Manager and he has been a board member of Capital Markets Authority. Currently he is the Director of the Social and Political Pillars as well as

the Acting Director General of Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat. He is a board member of Lamu Port, South Sudan and Ethiopia Transport Corridor Project, alternate board member for Africa Group B Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century under Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, committee board member at Management University of Africa and board member with African Population & Health Research Center. His research interest areas are food security, water harvesting and management, financing of education and capacity development (especially among the youth) for effective implementation of Kenya Vision 2030.

White subway tile wainscoting will really finish this look off and add a layer of interest to the space.

A recently development of a golf estate an interesting model had been experimented with where there would be blocks of apartments within the development.

In the initial planning iteration the block of 6 apartments (2 x 1 bed and 4 x 2 bed) would have been seated on a half-acre plot just like the other design options which were monstrous single family dwelling units.

This was an interesting twist to the current strategies but they failed in the fact that they wanted to sell each unit in the block of apartments separately. If they had sold all six as a single unit they would have created a totally new market segment.

Since both the single family mansion with 6 all ensuite rooms + staff quarters for 2 and the six unit block has roughly the same built

34 up area the difference in occupants is nonexistent.

So instead of a single young executive (empty nest 1) buying the 6 bedroom unit they could buy the 6 units plot convert the top 2 units into a bachelor pad with lovely views. One of the other units can be converted into a shared space such as a gym and the other units rented off or used by those pesky younger siblings or long-stay relatives.

Technology that makes you SMILE

When they decide to get married and the children start popping (full house) they can take up more of the space by making the necessary conversion along the way until at some point they occupy the entire unit as a single family.

As the children start maturing, they can recreate the independent units to provide the children with a level of independence while still having them close by. This is more appealing than having them remain in their childhood rooms into old age; what has been called “failure to launch� syndrome.

The usual attrition will happen as the children start moving away from home as they get married and take control of their

lives far away from disruptive grandparents.

As we get to this point, as the couple enters empty nest and they are weak in the knees - they would move downstairs to one of the 2 bedroom units and then rent off the other units or take in the grand children or that very close aging couple who are tired of living alone in a six bedroom all ensuite house.

The cycle would then begin again allowing the house to transform so as to meet the changing lifestyle and stages of the owner.

To achieve this flexibility it is essential that we stop building fortresses and instead develop homes that change with our needs.

determined to redefine Africa’s future. The gap became an incentive for me to create a Kenyan crafts resource.

Within days, I developed the Crafting Kenya concept: I would travel throughout Kenya in September 2014, with a professional photographer, to visually document Kenya’s crafts. I would then publish an e-book and organize a public photography exhibition for people to experience the wealth of Kenyan crafts. It was a case of a personal project with a compelling public benefit angle.

Crafts industry remains an outstanding repository of a national identity and one that speaks aesthetical volume for places and spaces, writes Wanja LAIBONI, following her zealous craft expedition across Kenya as photographed by Anthony Bourraseau.

Flashback to September 2014. We’re sitting at the Swahili Cultural Center in Mombasa listening to the history of the world-famous Swahili doors, told by a narrator with a characteristic Swahili lilt. We’re then treated to a practical demonstration of the geometric “Bajun” and flowery “Bengal” wooden motifs that found a home at the East African coast during the Indian Ocean trade.

Two weeks later, we’re in the hilly recesses of Western Kenya. This leg of the trip takes us to the soapstone quarries of Tabaka where we watch stone carvers transform giant, shapeless rocks into masterpieces without a plan or drawing to refer to. It is here that we meet the quarry comedian who, upon seeing us, launches into a demonstration of how his soapstone dolphin would swim if it were alive.

When people ask me what Crafting Kenya is, I explain that it’s a photographic journey of Kenya’s traditional and contemporary crafts.

While this description is spot on, there’s more to the Crafting Kenya story.

“When it comes to art, buy with your eyes, not your ears. I tried very hard not to ‘decorate’ with art.

Art should be reflective of your personality and what’s going on in your head—not reflective of the colors of a sofa.”

Kenya’s crafts industry embodies impressive dynamism and resourcefulness that has been bred by scarcity of materials. Throughout the Crafting Kenya journey, we encountered craftsmen who miraculously transformed waste materials into products ranging from beautiful jewelry to interiors and architectural fixtures. It was a case of turning trash into cash. Similarly, Kenya’s crafts industry is, for the most part, an economic success story as it is a source of livelihoods for thousands of Kenyans.

Source of inspiration My Crafting Kenya experience also confirmed something that I have always believed in: that Africa’s traditional cultures, if preserved and leveraged strategically, could be a source of valuable material and inspiration to power economically vibrant and creative cultural industries.

Crafting Kenya’s photography focused on the craftsmen, the techniques and materials that they use, and the crafts per se. Our encounter with Kenya’s craftsmen was an opportunity to better understand the history of Kenya’s crafts, and the meanings behind the color choices and symbols. The project’s theme, which will also be the exhibition’s theme, thus became “People, Processes, and Products”.

Intersection of themes In a recent meeting I was asked to describe my impressions of Kenya’s crafts industry.

My answer was that the industry sits at the intersection of many themes that tell a positive side of the African story: resourcefulness and dynamism, livelihoods, aesthetics, culture and identity.

Evidence of this abounds elsewhere: according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis and National Endowment for the Arts, the arts and cultural production accounted for $504 billion, or 3.2% of the US GDP in 2011. A Deutsche Bank Research report indicated that Germany’s cultural and creative industries generated 60 billion euros from goods and services produced by the sector, in 2009. The sector also employed over 1 million people.

Lastly, the crafts industry in Kenya is a repository of identity and the Kenyan sense of aesthetics. If our host at the Swahili center believes that the objects people make are an expression of their culture, I would add that the objects that a culture makes really touch at the heart of who the people are for, in the words of Samuel Mockbee, the hand expresses what the heart already knows.

Hospitality is soft While the hospitality market relates well with positive impression, such attribute should be attached with quality service to jell with the overall artistic bearing of the hotels, restaurants and more, writes Robert YAWE. As the adage goes; “Experience is the best teacher.” Well, I had the pleasure of staying at one of the newly developed conference and holiday resorts in Kenya and the experience was wanting. In fact, naming them here might just kill the business altogether. I was surely left wondering if Kenyans have lost the appreciation of good service.

The resort is very well designed and laid out across large manicured lawns with a rich depiction to the culture of the tribes who previously occupied the area; I wish they had also taken on the hospitality of those people.

Nothing to impress It is clear right from the entrance that a large volume of money was pumped into the project and almost no expense was spared in the physical facilities. Unfortunately this did not extend into the facility’s interior creature comforts. There’s nothing to impress on the soft components and accessories.

Looking at some of the items in the rooms it is clear that there was need to complete the project which resulted in the loss of the theme. Hospitality is about the soft skills, those that you do not see but feel or experience, which is why the most expensive places to holiday in Kenya, is in a tent within the Masai Mara. Many of these are temporary camps that will not exist at the end of the high season and will have relocated next season.

However, the levels of soft skills at these rough temporary locations are impeccable.

Right from the quality of food to the service

62 delivery, this has been an issue that we, Kenyan investors, keep missing out when investing in the hospitality industry. Too much of the funds are spent in the physical facilities such that there is nothing left for the human component thus reverting to the house help approach to recruiting the staff to face the client.

Jobless relatives This entails calling your close friends and asking them to send you their jobless relatives from the village for employment after which you wonder why the business is not achieving the projected returns.

It was interesting to find out that the resort had a soft opening where they hosted the hospitality and interiors experts from media houses as well as travel agents for an entire week.

I would have expected that they would have invited the experts from academia in hospitality, real estate and interiors to give them an independent observation rather than go for the cheap publicity approach which is likely to backfire on them over time as they are the same ones who will raise the flaws in future.

If you intend to cater for conferences, your staff-need to be fast, energetic, efficient and thick skinned with supervisors who are like eagles, not crows, as they must be able to pick the slightest slacking on the floor.

Instead the management ill-talk of conference participants, yet they have a duty to partronise the venue otherwise.

Quite often, the negative attitude is easily noted. The casual nature the staff lay out
