Quixosis

A Sonata for Tuba and Piano commissioned by Franklin Piland Spring 2016

QUIXOSIS

Quixosis is loosely based on Cervantes' infamous novel Don Quixote, principly on the main character Don Quixote, his companion Sancho Panza, and the imaginary princess Dulcinea. The work progresses through the establishment and interplay of these three characters through an introductory exposition, through an embattled development, and a tragic demise, as Quixote's unbearably light idealism crashes upon him from far above. The idea of this story came to me when discovering the incredible flexibility of the tuba, especially its unparalleled ability to play both sides of the comedy/tragedy dichotomy. Performance Note: for the tubist, it is very important to interact physically with the piece. Subtle shift of posture and attitude is required for each character to best inform the audience of said characters and their ensuing interplay. For the Don Quixote character, first represented in measures 15 through 84, an upright, rather self-serious posture is best. For Sancho Panza's theme, first heard from measure 111 to 142, a more relaxed, almost slouching posture is suitable. And for Dulcinea's music, first heard from measure 152 to 182, an angelic ethereal posture is called for. The performer should strive to re-engage each of these poses as the music progresses and each character returns. Of course, such posturing must remain subtle, never allowing any theatrical aspect to eclipse the music. Most imortantly, have fun! For the performer's deeper experience with Quixosis, I highly recommend watching the TV movie version of Don Quixote from 2000, starring John Lithgow. It was this film that inspired my composition.
