A LETTER FROM THE MAJOR Dear Friends, The past couple of years presented our world with more monumental challenges at one time than at any time in recent memory. Health, safety, income, shelter, food security, just treatment for all, and many other aspects of our lives were impacted in tremendous ways. As is always the case, the most vulnerable in our community are impacted the greatest.

As we have done over and over throughout history, The Salvation Army pivoted almost overnight to devoting a greater component of our services to meeting basic needs in new and unique ways. We are so very grateful to our friends who provided their financial support and personal time to make these services possible. Although the need was great in 2022, so was the outpouring of generosity.

Matthew 25:40 (MSG) “Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.”

As I read through the stories in this report, I thank God for you, and pray that you will know the pleasure God takes in your generosity toward those who are so vulnerable.

A LETTER FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD CHAIR Dear Friends, I count it a blessing and a privilege to serve as Chairman of The Salvation Army’s Advisory Board. I’ve given more than a decade of services to The Salvation Army. Not only serving on the board, but as the pastor of the Newport Missionary Baptist Church, our congregation offers praise and worship services with the families at the shelter. Individuals and families at the shelter love to give their gratitude in worship back to the Lord because they appreciate the services provided through The Salvation Army.

It’s a blessing to serve on the board because The Salvation Army provides services 24/7/365 by way of using its resources, ensures a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas experience for the families served, provides a roof over their heads, food, clothing, mental health, medical assistance, summer camp to the children, and so much more.

I’m grateful The Salvation Army continues to grow in exciting, inclusive, and innovative directions, and I greatly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of it. We look forward to your ongoing love and support of The Salvation Army.

“I’ve lost everything I have and appreciate everything I get.

I’m stronger now."

HOUSTON'S STORY It was the middle of winter when a fire broke out in Houston Morrow’s Milwaukee apartment. While trying to escape, he fell and hit his head. A week later, he woke up in the hospital after being in a coma.

After spending almost three months in the hospital, Morrow, 62, had no place to live, no clothes, and all his belongings were gone.

“Everything I had burned up,” he said. “If it weren’t for y’all, I’d really be messed up.”

Morrow, who is disabled and living on a fixed income, said he reached out to The Salvation Army while he was still in the hospital. Upon learning about his situation and getting the necessary documentation, Morrow received a coat, boots, two pairs of jeans, two packs of t-shirts, and a pack of socks.

Two Salvation Army case managers personally delivered the items to Morrow at the hospital.

“It’s a good thing y’all do this because a lot of times, people don’t have anywhere to turn,” Morrow said.

In addition, he was provided a voucher from The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services to help rebuild his life.

“I’d like to get a new place, get some furniture, some towels,” he said. “I don’t have anything, and that would be really nice. Money is real tight.”

Reflecting over the past three months, Morrow said he learned to really appreciate every little thing.

“Everything is not a given. I appreciate things more now,” he said. “I’ve lost everything I have and appreciate everything I get. I’m stronger now. Even stronger than when I got out of the hospital. Y’all really really helped me.”

Morrow is currently living with his mother in Minnesota and said he hopes to rebuild and someday give back to the place that gave him so much.

“If I ever get on my feet, I’ll make a donation to The Salvation Army and pay it forward,” he said.

While they were there, they provided him with housing resources and comfort.

“I’m most grateful for being able to leave the hospital with clothes and a coat,” Morrow said. “I have a lot of respect for The Salvation Army. Without y’all’s help, I’d really be in a bad situation.”

WAYS WE HELP The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County is home to four worship and community centers, four thrift stores, five food pantries, one adult rehabilitation center, and an emergency lodge. We have been serving others in Christ's name since 1889.

BACK TO SCHOOL We provide backpacks filled with necessary school supplies to children in need.

CHAPLAINCY PROGRAM This partnership with the Milwaukee Police Department allows volunteers to provide emotional and spiritual care to those who have experienced a traumatic incident.

CHRISTMAS FAMILY FEAST Christmas Family Feast is the largest feeding event hosted by The Salvation Army on Christmas Day in the country.

COATS FOR KIDS We distribute coats to children and adults who do not have one for winter.

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE We help individuals needing assistance to meet basic needs in emergency situations including loss of a loved one, loss of employment, illness, fire, and other crisis situations.

EMERGENCY DISASTER SERVICES The Salvation Army prepares for and responds to emergencies such as natural disasters and structural fires.

FEED THE KIDS We provide bagged lunches to Milwaukee neighborhoods in need during the summer.

FOOD PANTRIES We have five food pantries in Milwaukee County that serve those in need.

SENIOR LIVING Booth Manor provides high quality, subsidized housing for older adults.

TOY SHOP We distribute toys, games, and other gift items to families in need.

"I get to help people change their lives, and in the same breath, change my life.”

MARY'S STORY It’s not every day that someone who has been helped

by The Salvation Army turns around to become a volunteer, soldier, and employee of The Salvation Army. But for Mary Fullilove, that’s exactly what happened.

“When I was introduced to The Salvation Army, I was coming from the streets,” Mary said.

Mary came across The Salvation Army at a resource fair during her rehab program in Chicago in 1992.

Through The Salvation Army, she received household goods for her family, and counseling services to help her with her addiction struggles.

“They helped me out with an apartment. When I got the place, they helped me out with our needs: pots and pans, covers. They also gave me counseling,” Mary said.

Mary enrolled her son in The Salvation Army’s preschool program and soon found herself immersed in volunteering there and at the Emergency Lodge, where she became an employee.

“I started off as a top volunteer, and then I got on the Parent Committee and ended up being the President of the Parent Committee,” Mary said.

In 2007, Mary and her family relocated to Las Vegas, Nev., and Mary strayed from The Salvation Army. Six years later, Mary said she and her family returned to the Midwest and bought a house near The Salvation Army Milwaukee Citadel Corps, on the northside of Milwaukee. There, Mary started a Block Watch in her neighborhood.

"They sold drugs, turned tricks, everything, right there in your face with no respect,” Mary said. “I used to cry because I couldn’t take it.”

Through Block Watch, Mary was connected to The Salvation Army Milwaukee Citadel’s officers. She worked with Captain Patricia Williams to improve the neighborhood. In no time, Mary became a pillar at the Citadel as a soldier and an employee of The Salvation Army.

“The Salvation Army is the truth. The Salvation Army is a blessing to the community. They really help,” Mary said. “They help you where you’re at.

Where there’s a need, they reach it.”

Mary is The Salvation Army Milwaukee Citadel’s Food Pantry Coordinator and she still serves as the neighborhood Block Watch captain, while volunteering as a chaplain in The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County Chaplaincy Program.

Through her work, Mary said she has found purpose and works hard to help those in her community who are in need and facing the same struggles she faced before finding The Salvation Army many years ago.

“The greatest gift The Salvation Army has given me is a new way of life,” Mary said. “This is a lifechanging situation. I get to walk in my purpose and work with The Salvation Army. I get to help people change their lives, and in the same breath, change my life.”
