Madiba Legacy Alive

Every year on July 18th, a global celebration takes place to honor the legacy of the iconic liberation struggle hero and the first black democratically elected President of South Africa, Mr. Nelson Mandela (affectionately known as Tata Madiba). This day was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly as Nelson Mandela International Day in 2009. The purpose of Nelson Mandela International Day is to inspire individuals to take action and make a positive impact in their communities by dedicating 67 minutes of their time to help others, in appreciation of the 67 years that Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity.

As we approach the end of Mandela Month, on July 26, 2023, members of the South African Military Health Service Headquarters (SAMHS HQ) heeded the words of Tata Madiba when he stated: "It is in your hands to make the world a better one for all, especially the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized," by bringing to

As a registered non-profit organization, the Child Care Centre receives funding from the Department of Social Development for the residential care of the children committed to the Centre, which offers community-based social services. This funding amounts to approximately 65% of the funds required to run the center and, therefore, relies on donations for the remaining 35% of the funds.

SAMHS HQ members, in collaboration with Sanlam Sky, dedicated 67 minutes of their time to reduce the remaining 35% by donating non-perishable items received from various SAMHS directorates within the unit and 50 pairs of school shoes & socks from Sanlam Sky. The donated items, handed over by the Officer Commanding of SAMHS HQ Unit, Colonel Nomonde Maswanganye, and representatives, were well received with immense joy and appreciation from the members of the center.

As Nelson Mandela once said, "There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return."
