SAMHS has been actively involved in various important events, including those where the Commander in Chief, President Cyril Ramaphosa, addresses the nation in a form of an “Imbizo”. Our participation in BRICS was also notable.

In a world rapidly advancing in clinical research and development, the annual Surgeon General's Academic Days seminar achieved remarkable success. This year's theme “Back to Basics” resonated with our new SAMHS theme where medical research and innovation play a vital role in our journey “Towards Military Health Excellence”.

This year’s Surgeon General’s Annual Academic Days proved to be one of the most successful symposiums we have had in recent years. The Antimicrobial Resistance research paper

by Major Kwena Mathobela aroused and intrigued enthusiasm among our clinical academics. This innovation will expedite and assist the progress of education and training for our Health Care Professionals in clinical research.

We had been involved in community outreach projects during Mandela Day in various communities, such as the Mohau Child Youth Care Centre in Atteridgeville. This centre was adopted a few years ago by the SAMHS HQ personnel, and we continue to support it with donations, not forgetting the 1 Military Hospital Paediatric Ward.

National Days observation and celebrations in support of government initiatives by SAMHS members is tremendously appreciated.

Heritage Day celebrations are an integral part of our social norms and traditions within the SANDF community, as they allow us to celebrate our cultural diversity and heritage as a nation. The Heritage marks an important history of our generation and paves the way for the future. SAMHS has also a rich heritage since time immemorial dating back to the beginning of Red Cross by providing humanitarian relief to victims of war and natural disasters as well as providing military healthcare to armed forces. Our role in the military community is crucial as we continue to strive towards military health excellence.

We recently had an official overview visit to assess the state of our service delivery in our military medical centres.

Dunnotar and Army Gymnasium sickbays marked the completion of assessments for military bases in the Gauteng province.

urgeon General message for SAMHS NEWS Magazine 3rd Edition Colleagues, fellow serving and retired SAMHS members, welcome to another edition of our official publication. We are gradually approaching the last quarter of the year and this reminds us of our last review of all the tasks and business we embarked on. At this point, we assess and revise our plans.

Women’s Month celebrations were celebrated in a spectacular way, taking into consideration the budgetary constraints that the event had faced. I would like to extend my gratitude to the organisers and all members that participated in remembering the women who bravely fought for women’s rights on 09 August 1956. The Casual Day celebrations in support of the DOD members who are living with disabilities did not go unnoticed.

The support shown by our members for the Presidential Imbizos held in different provinces is highly appreciated. SAMHS also made a positive impact during the BRICS Summit which was held on 22 to 24 August 2023, in the Gauteng Province, collaborating with SANDF to maintain our good image during these activities.

SAMHS Nurses Graduation Ceremony on 04 August 2023 at UNISA is something that we should be proud of and encourage more youngsters in this healthcare profession. They bring light and hope to primary healthcare and beyond.

The newly adopted theme for SAMHS is “Towards Military Health Excellence”.

This theme aligns with the Surgeon General’s vision for the next five years, outlining our path as we strive for excellence in military healthcare.

Achieving success in the SAMHS will necessitate a collective effort to maintain organisational focus, clear prioritisation of effort, and accountability for the execution of strategic and operational plans.

National Treasury in August issued a circular on the Cost Containment Measures to warn all government departments. This is to reduce the level of government spending for the current 2023/24 financial year as well as for the coming 2024/25 medium term expenditure framework (MTEF) to improve spending efficiency and

maintain a sustainable fiscal framework.

Cabinet resolved that the National Treasury should work with all departments and relevant stakeholders in national government, as well as with provinces to identify immediate measures.

In the meantime, heads of national departments should implement the cost containment measures such as freezing: New employment except if an employment offer has been made, or approved by the National Treasury together with the Department of Public Service and Administration provided that it is a critical post.

The process of advertising new procurement contracts for all infrastructure projects unless approved otherwise. Spending on catering, conferences, workshops and other related goods and services that have not yet been contracted.

Drastically reduce spending on all nonessential travel unless wholly or partially funded by non-governmental resources.

Each head of department should have provided the National Treasury with list of essential travel planned for the 2023/24 fiscal year by 15 September 2023. Routine travel costs for operational reasons involving no overnight stay are excluded.

SAMHS Discovers Best Scientific Research at Annual Academic Days

from 19 to 21 September 2023 at the Military Health Training Formation in Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria. The event consisted of 150 attendees from Gauteng Province and those from outside the province joined the conference virtually. Members who attended the event for the consecutive three (3) days will receive Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points.

he Surgeon General Academic Days is an annual event affording multi-disciplinary Health Care Professionals (HCPs) the opportunity for education, training and development in matters related to military medicine, the distinguished guest speakers were also invited to share the latest research studies and developments.

The Surgeon Generals Academic Days for 2023 was hosted under the theme “Back to basics”. The objective was to revisit and discuss SAMHS related clinical protocols as well as any other recent research conducted by SAMHS members.

The SG of the South the South African National Defence Force, Lt Gen Ntshavheni Peter Maphaha in his opening remarks said, “The South African Military Health

Service aligns itself to the Batho Pele Principles, guiding public health service delivery in the DOD, emphasizing health care, environmental protection, patient rights and health care system utilization”.

He continued, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely absence of disease or infirmity. It is a fundamental human right of every human being, without distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social circumstances or background and that the attainment of the highest possible level in the promotion and protection of health by any state is of value for all”.

Amongst the invited guests that graced this event with their presence were Prof Flavia Senkubuge from the University of Pretoria, the key note speaker of the day presented on the topic

“The quadruple burden of disease in South Africa” and Maj G. Gold from South African Army (SA Army) who presented “SANDF

Within the SAMHS there were about 27 professionals who presented their research papers on different topics.

The Forum will provide the SG, SAMHS Command Council and Scientific Committee an opportunity to select the best researchers and research topics to be presented at international conferences such as the International Conference in Military Medicine (ICMM).

“Going back to basics” the theme for Health Care Practitioners engaging during the Surgeon General’s Academics Days 2023.

Major General Mphikeleni Simelane in his closing remarks said, “the symposium is pivotal because most of the recommendations will be used to review policies in order to shape the future of health service in the SANDF.

I therefore urge all members of the South African Military Health Service to get back to basics in order to improve efficiency, effectiveness and synergy of effort”.

He closed the Three (3) days symposium by announcing the winner of the best research paper, Major C.K.K. Mathobela whose research paper was on Antimicrobial Resistance, a silent killer. During his interview with the SAMHS News he said what motivated him to do this research is that “rearing chickens consumed by human beings puts a burden on global antimicrobial resistance and when Doctors prescribed antibiotics to these patients they become resistant towards the treatment as the problem emanates from the chickens. He further explained that poultry farming for commercial purposes contribute negatively to human health.

He continued by encouraging the upcoming professionals to do more research not to rely only on policies but to be more innovative.

Maj Mathobela Pioneering Excellence in Pharmacology and Research

T

here are only two sorts of scientists: those who practice with their brains and those who practice with their tongue. Major Kwena Mathobela embodies both. Pharmacy Manager at Area Military Health Unit Limpopo in Makhado from 2017 to date, Major Kwena Mathobela has an impressive trajectory. As a mere village boy from Setupulane Village in Polokwane, he always envisioned himself making an impact not only in his community but nationwide through medicine.

He embodies all the qualities of a rare gem, limited in quantity and very valuable, as the only Pharmacologist in the South African National Defence Force.

His journey soared upon the completion of his degree in pharmacy, whereby he joined the Department of Health at Mankweng Hospital, later integrating into the Department of Defence in August 2011 as a Pharmacist at 1 Military Hospital.

As a healthcare professional that specialized in the preparation, dispensing and management of medication to ensure safe and effective use, while also providing medication counselling and guidance to patients and healthcare providers to improve the quality of life, his passion led him to further pursue his studies at the University of Limpopo, where he obtained his Masters Degree in Pharmacology in 2015 and later worked as a part-time Pharmacology lecturer from 2015 – 2020 at the institute.

In 2017, he relocated back to Limpopo Province, where he doubled as a pharmacy manager and researcher dedicating his focus to the effects of drugs and other chemical substances on cells, animals, humans and the environment.

Furthermore, transforming and advancing medication optimisation through research within the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS), therefore thriving towards military health excellence.

He further polished his acumen by obtaining certificates on short courses in antimicrobial stewardship and managing antimicrobial resistance (University of Dundee) and The British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy in 2015, Drug Origin (University of Birmingham) and Ethics Discovery Patients Research in Abdomen Anatomy (University of Leeds) in 2016.

As a man of many accomplishments, his academic path continues to serve him well professionally as he was selected as the most worthy recipient for the Best Research Thesis at the Surgeon General’s Academic Days Symposium in September 2023, hosted by the Surgeon General of South African National Defence Force, Lieutenant General Peter Ntshavheni Maphaha in Pretoria, whereby he presented his research based on the role of SAMHS on Antimicrobial Resistance, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Zoonosis (focusing on chickens) and One Health.

The objective of his research was to determine the severity of antimicrobial resistance in military health centers and to identify steps which SAMHS can take to establish an effective antimicrobial stewardship to prevent and control the emergence and spread of zoonotic disease.

A highly trained researcher and final stage PhD candidate who continually expresses his love for his work through research, he hopes to educate and raise indepth awareness in the military organization, health and agriculture organizations and communities on how medication works and interact with living organisms on a molecular level and systematic level.

Major Kwena Mathobela’s journey to greatness has undoubtedly established him as a formidable force in his field.

SAMHS Welcomes Heads Of State for XV BRICS Summit 2023

T

he BRICS Summit, an annual gathering of the heads of state from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, serves as a platform for these emerging economies to discuss and coordinate various common concerns while strengthening their economic ties and cooperation.

Topics at the BRICS Summit span economic cooperation, trade,

precision, standing in formation to salute the arriving heads of state, symbolizing respect and acknowledgment of their positions.

SAMHS Environmental Health Practitioners were on hand to perform Port Health duties when the heads of state arrived at the ports of entry. They monitored and evaluated all goods entering South Africa through ports, ensuring the control of hazardous substances and contagious diseases.

was to provide training on Surgical Trauma Response Techniques, preparing medical doctors for advanced treatment and stabilization of casualties in war or combat situations around the world.

Upon their arrival, the workshop participants received a warm welcome from Acting Officer Commanding of the School for Military Health Training, Lieutenant Colonel F.V. Bucibe, and General Officer Commanding Military Health Training, Brigadier General Andile Mbiza. They were addressed on behalf of the Surgeon General, Lieutenant General Peter Maphaha, who expressed gratitude to DIMO for their contribution to improving the SAMHS. This longawaited workshop did not only strengthened the collaboration between the two armed forces but also ensured that the SAMHS is fully prepared for the Force Integration Brigade requirements. Visits of this nature are of utmost importance as they pave the way for both Military Health Services to share knowledge and expertise in military health, education, and training, ultimately enhancing the working standards of both services.

outstanding performance. Major General Nsizwa Skosana, Chief Director of Military Health Force Support, and Chief Instructor Colonel Stacey Shackelford conferred certificates of excellence upon the deserving team, certifying

them as trainers of trainers.

In his address, Major General Skosana expressed his appreciation to the distinguished guests, stating, "The work you do around the world, sharing expertise for the purpose of world peace and the protection of our sovereignties and way of life through military medical support, is commendable. Your commitment to providing a jointly executed capability that fosters strong, resilient, comprehensive international partnerships resonates with us."

Indeed, their benevolent actions do not go unnoticed, and the people of South Africa hold their selflessness in high regard.

SAMHS Celebrates Women’s Month with a Focus on Advancement and Inclusion

I

n a powerful and symbolic gesture marking the conclusion of Women's Month, the South African Military Health Service coordinated a significant event on the 24th of August 2023. The event took place at the Military Health Training Formation Officers Mess and was dedicated to celebrating and recognizing women's contributions, with the resonant theme "SAMHS Capacity Building for Women in the DOD." At its core, this gathering paid homage to the relentless efforts of women who valiantly fought for women's emancipation within the Republic. It was an acknowledgment of those who battled barriers, shattered stereotypes, and tirelessly worked to establish a foothold for women in spaces that were once considered maledominated. Their tenacity and determination paved the way for progress, making the event a moment of reverence for their unwavering commitment.

This platform served as a meeting ground, bringing together the wealth of wisdom held by seasoned individuals and the untapped potential of the youth. By opening channels of communication across generations, the event aimed to create a synergy that would propel progress forward.

Central to these discussions was the imperative topic of women's health and mental well-being. By giving voice to these concerns, the event galvanized participants into action.

The first feature of the event was to pay tribute to the trailblazers of the past. By honoring their struggles and triumphs, the event reminded all in attendance of the formidable foundation upon which they now stand. It was a chance to remember history's lessons and to recognize the pioneers who made today's advancements possible.

The event's purpose was not solely retrospective. It also embraced the future, embodying a second objective: to foster a platform for dialogue.

L

t Col Precious Ncayiyana serves as the SO1 Pharmacy at the esteemed military institution, 1 Military Hospital, based in Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria. With an impressive 20 year experience career in her field, she has accrued various qualifications to her name. She holds a Bachelors in Pharmacy from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Master of Business in Business Administration in Corporate Finance and Strategy from Cass Business School in London, United Kingdom among others.

The International Committee of Military Medicine foundation was thoroughly impressed with her research submission, leading to its inclusion in the International Review of the Armed Forces Medical Services journal in March 2023 as an article. She acknowledges the challenging journey she undertook to ensure her research met the high standards of the journal.

A New Dawn For Nurses

A

bigail Adams once wrote, "Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence." This sentiment was evident as the new nursing graduates proudly walked across the stage, receiving congratulations from onlookers for a job well done.

On August 4, 2023, Surgeon General of the South African National Defence Force, Lieutenant General Peter Maphaha, welcomed the new nursing graduates at the University of South Africa in Pretoria. The Surgeon General expressed his deepest gratitude to the SAMHS Nursing College, its staff, the graduates, and their families who provided crucial support during their journey. He stated, "This is a sign that our organization is growing, and I couldn't be prouder. You have done exceptionally well, and your hard work and dedication are paying off.

Considering the demanding nature of their work, this graduation is a consecration, not only for SAMHS

but also for society at large. It signifies that there are selfless individuals ready to risk their lives for the well-being of others, setting them apart from the rest.

This auspicious event was attended by the highest-ranking commanders in the SAMHS, as well as members from the University. Among them were Major General Mphikeleli Simelane, Chief Director of Military Health Force Preparations, Major General Zoziwe Maso, the former Director of Nursing and current Chief Director of Transformation Management, and Professor D.E. Mphuthi, Acting Head of the Department of Health Studies.

Guest speaker Mr Hlongwe, currently a Deputy Director of Nursing Compliance and Research at the Gauteng Department of Health, reminded the graduates of the core values of nursing: caring, honesty, compassion, integrity, systematic approach, scientific rigor, and holiness. responsibility placed upon them, stating, "It is crucial to respect, protect, and restore dignity. When people are sick, it is not just their bodies that are affected, but their dignity as well."

Colonel A.E. Makumbane explained the significance of the lamp to the graduates. The tradition of lighting the lamp serves as a reminder of the honorable traditions of their profession and pays tribute to the heroine of nursing, Florence Nightingale. "The lamp in your hand is the symbol of those who keep vigil over the sick.

It represents the nursing profession's role as a guiding light for others," she explained.

The graduates accepted the responsibility that comes with their profession, as Acting Director of Nursing Colonel I.A.M. Mabasa led them in reciting the pledge of service. The Class of 2023 excelled in their studies, with numerous graduates receiving cum laude honors. Floating trophies were awarded to different students who demonstrated professionalism and integrity in various aspects of their education.

For her outstanding contributions, she was awarded the Surgeon General Coin by Colonel Steven Leir of the United States Airforce.

aptain Nirmala Chengalroyen, also known as Marlene, is a dynamic, passionate, self-motivated, and hardworking professional. She thrives in intellectually stimulating environments and confronts challenges to provide suitable solutions.

Born and raised in the small town of Chatsworth west of Durban, she lost both her parents at the age of 6. "Life was tough but adaptable," she says. In 2004, she joined the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and was awarded a study bursary to pursue a Four-Year Nursing diploma, which she completed in 2008 with Cum Laude honors, receiving the Surgeon General Trophy.

She continued her career, qualifying as a Critical Care Professional Nurse in 2012. In 2016, she obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Science (Education and Management), also with Cum Laude honors. She pursued additional short courses in Disaster Management and Occupational Health and Safety. In 2022, Captain Chengalroyen achieved a Master's Degree in Nursing Management, marking the pinnacle of her nursing career. This degree has opened up numerous opportunities for her in the field of Nursing Research and Implementation Science within the SAMHS, National Department of

Despite the pressure to be submissive and respectful in a male-dominated workforce, Captain Chengalroyen has learned the value of decisiveness and evidence-based decision-making from her male counterparts. She said, "Women are often seen as emotional beings (laughing), but I voice my opinions for the benefit of all."

hen we talk about dynamite coming in small packages, we're talking about Dr. Galesitoe. She was born and raised in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria. Her ability to stay focused on her life goals is largely attributed to her parents, who instilled in her a deep appreciation for family, education, and respect for human dignity. Growing up in the township was a challenge for most young people, but her parents' love and support kept her on track.

She completed her MBCHB in 2002 at MEDUNSA, now known as Sefako Makgatho University. Later, in April 2019, she joined the military as a medical doctor. In 2020, she completed her specialization in Psychiatry and was appointed as the acting head of the department shortly after.

Psychiatry is unique as it looks at health holistically, considering how biological, social, spiritual, political, psychological, occupational, and financial factors impact health. It's a diverse speciality that allows one to work in various settings, from schools, prisons, hospitals, and communities to corporate, sports, and even the military, where mental health is crucial for those who undertake challenging tasks."

Empowering women is a cause close to her heart. In honor of Women's Month, she shared her motto for women's empowerment, stating that she lives by the saying "do unto others." She emphasizes that women should remember they are not alone, be kind to themselves, set small achievable goals, celebrate small victories, and empower themselves through skills and knowledge acquisition.

7 Med CBRD Wing Provides Training Support

T

he 7 Medical Battalion Group Chemical Biological Radiological Defence Wing played a vital role in providing training support during the Assistance and Protection course conducted by the Organisation for the Prohibition of

Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in partnership with the South African government through the Council for the Non-proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (NPC). This course was held from August 21, 2023, to September 1, 2023, at the Pienaarsrivier Training Base (Ditholo) in Pretoria, aiming to equip 19 instructors from various African States Parties. These instructors are responsible for training first responders in dealing with chemical emergency incidents, including fire brigades, police, military, and emergency medical services.

The course covered a wide range of topics, including planning and establishing support teams for civilian protection and defense, rescue and decontamination operations in contaminated areas, and appropriate responses and

countermeasures in the event of incidents involving chemical warfare agents or toxic chemicals.

Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel, Q.S.M. Mafa, Acting Chemical Biological Advisor, the Chemical Biological and Radiological Defence Wing of the 7 Medical Battalion Group provided essential support, including qualified instructors and equipment, and conducted both theoretical and practical training sessions.

On August 31, 2023, Major General Mphikeleli Simelane, Chief Director of Military Health Force Preparation, paid a visit to the OPCW course during its final phase of practical evaluation.

During his visit, General Simelane extended his congratulations to all course participants, emphasizing that dedication and determination make everything possible. He also acknowledged the exemplary discipline and professionalism displayed by the 7 Medical Battalion Group Unit throughout the course.

In his parting words, General Simelane offered well wishes to the departing students, urging them to implement the knowledge and methods they have acquired for the benefit of their respective nations.

AMHU GT Unit Showcase Diverse Medical Disciplines

T

he South African Military Health Service empowered Sebokeng communities through the Vaal Career Expo and community outreach program.

The Area Military Health Unit Gauteng arrived early in the morning to showcase its disciplines at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre, Zone 14, Sebokeng, under the Sedibeng District Municipality in Gauteng.

The Sebokeng community experienced an exciting event with various activities. One of the critical components of this event was to expose and empower the youth with the different disciplines within the South African Military Health Service.

In addition to the career expo, the event also included a community outreach initiative aimed at addressing significant issues and improving the overall welfare of the community. Activities included Dental Health Care, Health Screening, Sports and Recreation, Dietetics, Medical Health Support, and a Level 1 Medical Post.

The Dietetics team also provided guidelines for healthy eating habits to ensure a healthier lifestyle.

The South African Military Health Service Band delivered a high-energy and captivating performance that captured the community members' attention.

Music has the power to evoke emotions, and the SAMHS band often plays songs that resonate with the community, creating a sense of belonging and emotional connection. The band's melodies uplifted the mood and encouraged the community to dance, sing, and immerse themselves in the atmosphere.

On the other hand, the Physical training instructors were on hand to demonstrate exercises, including stomach and weight-bearing exercises. Regular physical training

has a positive impact on mental health and plays a crucial role in weight management, stress relief, social benefits, energy levels, and overall well-being.

The Oral Health team emphasized the importance of regular oral hygiene practices such as brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups to prevent dental problems.

Prioritizing regular dental exams helps detect early signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.

Community members were delighted to receive toothpaste and pamphlets detailing the importance of oral hygiene.

Through these initiatives, the Sebokeng community witnessed a positive transformation for the betterment of their community and wellbeing. The Level 1 Medical post was the center of attention, as community members in need of medical care visited for check-ups.

But a few miles away from home, there's a table set with bread and nice warm, homemade soup, and there's a voice calling, "Come, come, get a cup of soup."

The Military Veterinary Institute left an imprint that says, "Sharing is caring."

This is the day when members can make their imprint and a difference in the community.

AMHU Eastern Cape Celebrates Mandela Day 2023

Subsequently, the members proceeded to Ekuphumleni Old Age Home in Zwide to visit the elderly members of the community. The residents received gift packets and enjoyed a warm visit from the military members. We pay tribute to those forgotten heroes who gave their all on the battlefield and in their communities.

At Lake Farm, the focus was on activities that promote mental health, such as exercise and relaxation. Members of AMHU EC and Air Force Station PE engaged in sports activities with the residents.

Let us always remember to give without expecting anything in return, not only on Mandela Day.

This day was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly as Nelson Mandela International Day in 2009.

The AMHU WC staff came in numbers, accompanied by Sanlam, Old Mutual, and Bula Foundation to start a beginner’s garden for Mothers Unite. The NPO received a fully loaded beginner’s garden with tools to continue with maintenance and a newly painted children’s play gym.

Breastfeeding: The Best Feeding Choice

F

or years, new moms have faced the decision of how to nourish their babies: breastfeeding or formula milk. While instinctively, all mothers know that breastfeeding provides the best nutrition, some opt for formula for various reasons: 

To avoid the physical strain of breastfeeding.



Concerns about changes to their breast appearance.



Convenience of using processed milk.



The ability for anyone to feed the baby, providing the mother with more flexibility.



Attraction to formula marketing with added minerals for brain development.

Breastfeeding rates have declined due to marketing of breastmilk substitutes that capitalize on the vulnerabilities of new and working mothers. Artificial baby formulas have been the subject of debates with words like "neuro" and "IQ" used in advertising, disrupting the natural infant feeding scheme.

Many mothers struggle to breastfeed due to psychological, emotional, physiological, or external factors. Some lack milk due to genetic reasons, while others face the stress of returning to work or financial burdens affecting breastfeeding.

At 3 Military Hospital in Bloemfontein, Captain Lebohang Mohale, in charge of the Maternity Ward, offers new mothers a best choice between breastfeeding and formula feeding. They explain the pros and cons and provide support.

They also educate mothers on the financial implications of formula milk. Mixing breastfeeding and

formula is discouraged to prevent confusion for the baby.

Breast milk is the purest form of infant nutrition, rich in nutrients, antibodies, and water. It's easy to digest and adapts to the baby's changing needs. The benefits of breastfeeding from the first hour after birth are often underestimated, as breast milk serves as an infant's primary defense against illness and enhances their immune system.

At 3 Military Hospital, babies are placed on their mothers' chests immediately after birth for skin-toskin contact, fostering a strong bond. The Maternity Ward staff assists new mothers throughout the breastfeeding process and offers individual courses to boost their confidence. Captain Mohale notes that breastmilk is especially beneficial for premature babies and those with respiratory issues.

The breast pump industry has seen significant growth, although it can lead to a deterioration of the bond between mother and infant.

However, it remains a vital tool for some mothers to manage breastfeeding. Breastmilk can be stored in the fridge for up to 3-4 months or frozen for up to 12 months.

World Breastfeeding Week, observed from August 1 to 7, 2023, focused on "Enabling Breastfeeding – Making a Difference for Working Parents," with the goal of increasing the global breastfeeding rate to 70% by 2023, up from the current 48%.

Breastmilk enhances the baby's immune system, prevents malnutrition, and lowers the mother's risk of cancer and diabetes while aiding post-pregnancy weight loss. Breastfeeding also saves time and money and fosters a strong mother-baby bond.

A mother can exclusively breastfeed her baby for up to 6 months. HIVpositive mothers can breastfeed as long as their viral load is less than 50, with specific medicine given to the baby if necessary. Mixed feeding should be avoided to prevent transmission of the virus.

Research breastfeeding specialists, and the World Health Organization all agree: breast is best, and what a new life needs most is a mother's love.

Forming a Unity and Social Responsibility Mandela Day

S

outh African Military Health Service Formations, Area, Support and Mobile Military Health joined the world in commemorating Nelson Mandela Month in July 2023. They heeded the government call on citizens to contribute to turning the tide against food insecurity and climate change in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

They did this by helping one of their own, Private Kabelo Hlongwane who recently had parts of his house gutted by fire. The neighbouring Formations decided to join hands and contribute to ease the burden of their colleague. They donated paint, clothes and various household items. The members also used the opportunity to interact with each other while painting the house. This was a heart-warming moment as it created unity among colleagues.

The 2023 commemoration takes place under the theme “It is in your hands”. Mandela made the declaration, “It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it” during his July 2007 speech delivered at the “46664” AIDS benefit concerts held in his honour by local and foreign musicians between 2003 and 2008.

Former President, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela abhorred injustice. He is largely known for the personal sacrifices and his fellow freedom fighters that laboured towards the attainment of democracy in South Africans. Even outside of prison, Mandela continued the fight against injustice, especially poverty through various means, including mobilising local and international friends to support fundraising efforts for food insecurity and education, among others. Mandela viewed anti-poverty efforts as the protection of human rights.

He once said, “Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.”

A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins With a Single Step

eet Major Doctor Sweetness Jabulile Beteck, who embarked on her journey by joining the South African National Defence in 2003 through the Department of Defence Youth Foundation Programme. Initially aspiring to become a Physiotherapist, she soon discovered new fields of study that influenced her career path after joining the Defence Force.

Currently serving as a Biokineticist in the Area Military Health Unit North West, her career journey took root in 2005 when she enrolled at the University of North West to pursue her dream of becoming a Biokineticist. She successfully completed her undergraduate degree and subsequently pursued her Honours Degree.

During her academic journey, she encountered significant obstacles. In 2009, while pursuing her Honours Degree, she was involved in a vehicle accident that left her in a coma for two weeks. This experience had a profound impact on her life, leading to her repeating her Honours Degree in 2010.

"My struggle with short-term memory loss greatly affected my life. Nevertheless, I will forever be grateful that I managed to complete my Honours Degree and subsequently enrolled in my

Throughout her pursuit of her Doctoral Degree, Dr. Beteck has been surrounded by influential figures. One of them is her mother, whom she regards as a relentless achiever, serving as a constant source of inspiration. She draws her spiritual inspiration from Pastor Apostle Matras, whom she believes has played a pivotal role in her spiritual growth.

Her academic mentor, Professor Hanlie Moss, provided invaluable assistance during her thesis titled, "Contribution of supervised exercise and knowledge of black Africans on physical activity about risk factors for non-communicable diseases: The Be Healthy Study."

Maintaining a balance between her professional duties and academics demanded numerous sacrifices. She often had to stay up late at night to study, ensuring a high work ethic within her department.

Her advice to women is to prioritize self-care in their daily lives through proper nutrition, exercise, and stress management. She further encourages all women never to be intimidated by the label of the "weaker gender," as nothing is impossible.

2 Military Hospital feeds the needy during Mandela Day 2023

T

he Occupational Therapy Department at 2 Military Hospital once again donated 'Akni' meals to the impoverished community of an informal settlement located in Diep River known as "Gatjie."

Although the department also treated this day as a teambuilding event, their hearts and main focus were certainly geared toward serving those less fortunate than themselves.

'Akni' is a traditional Malay dish, primarily consisting of spicy, curried chicken, potatoes, and rice. Various spices go into the preparation of traditional Malay 'Akni.' Once the food preparation was completed, personnel from the Occupational Therapy Department set up a camping table as a "serving area" in the Gatjie settlement, and

members began serving 170 separate meals in polystyrene containers.

The Gatjie community shared the meal with the members of the 2 Military Hospital OT Department and the children who were still at school before returning home. Lt Col Briel remarked, "What a blessing it was to know that these children would be going to bed with full stomachs."

The members of the OT group appreciated the opportunity to partake in this noble cause of feeding the needy. "We may be members of the SANDF within the SAMHS, but any given day, we serve the people of South Africa." That was the message of the OT team.

Nursing Fraternity Leaders Push the Needle

he South African Military Health Service Nursing (SAMHS) Directorate hosted a Nurse Leaders Work Session at SAMHS Banana Beach Holiday Resort, in the KwaZulu Natal South Coast over the period 31 July to 4 August 2023 under theme “Pushing the Needle”, which is in line with the Surgeon General Intent and the National Health Strategy 2020/20212025/26 strategic goals. A total of 67 Nurses Leaders gathered at Banana Beach from all over the country, and represented every speciality in the SAMHS. During her opening remarks Acting Nursing Director Colonel I.M.A. Mabasa confirmed that Nurses account for approximately 20 % of SAMHS, the largest personnel corps of the SAMHS and she called on all them to unite as a team to improve nursing care in the organisation.

The nursing strategy 2021/ 2023, emphasises implementation of continuous measures to ensure improved nursing care through an empowered and developed practitioner through improved processes. Quality assurance and

the application of the Appreciative Inquiry Theoretical through a quality improvement framework, will assist in motivating Nurses as a Team and enhancing productivity.

The Nurse Leaders discussed the OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act) cycle and best to utilise it in every department, section and subsection of the Nursing Directorate. Some of the other burning topics that were discussed amongst others, the management of grievances’ the lack of and impact of critical resources (medication and medical consumables), the

nursing skill audit, the scope of the practise of the different categories of nurse, the integral role of training and development and the urgent need of functional reskilling training programs.

The Area Military Health Formation (AMHF) Senior Staff Officer Nursing Colonel B.J. Dube presented AMHF Updated Structure, Implementation of Community Nursing, Management of Primary Health Care Nursing Services and Occupational Health and Safety nursing services.

Tertiary Military Health Formation Major J.K. Tolong presented nursing service management, Clinical Education and Training Unit’s (CETU) in military hospitals and the Nurse Leader mentorship program.

Lieutenant Colonel Moteane from Military Health Training Formation presented the progress in respect of Nursing College training programs, guidelines for future training and an update on the Primary Health Care Training Program.

Colonel K. Davies from Mobile Military Health Formation gave an overview on combat readiness and

provided an annual external and internal deployment report.

Human Resource and the legal department did a hybrid presentations and covered topics such as the OSD translation, contract renewals, recruitment and appointment of officers. The Legal department gave an outline on ethical implications, legal issues and

the implication thereof.

Various work committees were formed during the session to address clinical nursing care, training and development, standardization, quality insurance, research opportunities and human resources burning issues.

The week included a daily fun themes and Director Military Health Force Preparation, Major General M. Simelane honoured the gala evening on Wednesday 2 August 2023, during which the tradition of Lighting the Lamp and reading of the Nurses’ Pledge was introduced as a nursing profession symbol.

Nurse Leaders Take a Bow

M

aya Angelou once said, "As nurses, we have the opportunity to heal the mind, soul, heart, and body of our patients. They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel." This sentiment is evident in the dedication of nurses who commit their lives to serving and saving lives.

We are all living proof that they are the lifeblood of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and society as a whole.

It was a bittersweet moment when the Nursing Directorate had to bid farewell to their leaders, who gracefully handed the baton to the new leaders. These departing commanders have left an indelible mark and brought about significant changes in this department. It's an undeniable fact that the Nursing department is one of the most critical fraternities, and under the leadership of Major General Zuziwe Maso as Director Nursing, it has thrived and reached new heights.

Former Director Nursing is known as a firm leader who never accepts "no" for an answer. She demonstrated that we cannot turn a blind eye to issues; we all bear the responsibility of effecting change.

She took risks, even in the face of potential ridicule and resentment, for the betterment of others. She fought for the rights and dignity of nurses, and for this, the nursing department will forever be grateful.

As the saying goes, "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together." Nurses exemplified unity during the coronavirus

pandemic. They could not have done it without the leadership and guidance of their Staff Officer 1, Colonel Bhembe. They were called upon to put their lives on the line, and Colonel Bhembe stood beside them, even during tragic events where some colleagues lost their lives. Those who worked with her described her as more of a mother than anything else, providing them with a safe haven. Under her leadership, numerous grievances decreased significantly because she genuinely cared for their well-being.

Like any mother, she knew when to be authoritative and set boundaries.

It's safe to say that our impact on the lives we have touched will never fade, as all her colleagues share the same sentiments.

The foundation is the fundamental part of anything, and its crucial to lay a solid groundwork. SAMHS Nursing College can attest to this truth. Many nurses in the South African Military Service has passed through the hands of Colonel Letebele, OC of Nursing College.

Her role was demanding yet equally important because she instilled all the values synonymous with nursing in every student who will one day enter the professional field.

Speaking of students, it was under her leadership that Nursing College achieved accreditation, a monumental achievement that will benefit the South African National Defence Force for generations to come.

The South African Military Health Service extends its heartfelt salute to these stalwarts for their outstanding contributions and wishes them well in their future endeavors.

Devotion: Psalm 121 I look to the mountains, where will my help come from? My help will come from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

He will not let you fall; your protector is always awake.

The protector of Israel never dozes or sleeps. The Lord will guard you; he is by your side to protect you. The sun will not hurt you during the day, nor the moon during the night.

The Lord will protect you from all danger; he will keep you safe. He will protect you as you come and go now and for ever.

This Psalm is known as a song of ascents, when the people took their annual pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. As the people looked up all around them, and they saw the mountains, they were reminded that God created these.

This Psalm is a promise from the Lord that He will help and protect us.

Even during those times when we can’t sleep at night, as we worry about our problems and troubles, let us be reminded that our God does not sleep nor slumbers.

We can call to him at any time of the day or the night in the knowledge that he will indeed listen to our prayers and pleas.

God has promised to protect us from all danger, let us keep on asking Him to protect us and our loved ones.

Even as the year 2023 draws to a close, let us always ask God to be close to us. When we prepare to travel over the festive season, let us ask Him to protect us.

Capt Bongiwe Tlailane a Mental Health Ambassador

F

or centuries, many physicians have pursued creative writing alongside their medical practice. This choice, though unconventional, is not as rare as one might think.

Today, it might come as a surprise to many that some physicians are better known for their literary works than their medical qualifications. Dr. Bongiwe Tlailane, our own esteemed physician, falls into this category.

She is a fully qualified medical doctor who completed her studies at MEDUNSA in 2006.

In 2015, she embarked on a unique path by joining the military and working in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department. Her decision was driven by the shortage of personnel in this particular department.

However, in 2017, she transitioned to the Psychiatry Department, where she earned her Diploma in Mental Health in 2018. This shift in her career trajectory served as

the catalyst for her journey into writing.

"I aspired to specialize in Psychiatry because my life's purpose is to be a Mental Health Ambassador," she explained. "I am fulfilling this purpose by promoting my books, which focus on a holistic approach to wellness, including mindfulness and overall well-being."

Dr Bongiwe Tlailane's writings aim to destigmatize the term 'crazy' and underscore the fact that we are all impacted by each other's mental health.

She emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and being attuned to the personal challenges faced by others.

Furthermore, the book author highlights the significant stress that accompanies pregnancy and underscores the importance of discussing mental wellness, intervention, and conversations surrounding Postpartum Depression.

In conclusion, Dr. Bongiwe Tlailane stresses the value of being present and sensitive to those around us.

She firmly believes that kindness and authenticity are powerful tools that can positively influence the lives of others.

Staff Sergeant Malope Empowering Women in Tennis

P

articipating in sports can help break down stereotypes, improve the self-esteem of girls and women, and contribute to the development of leadership and strategic thinking skills. Women in sports challenge the misconception that they are weak or incapable. Staff Sergeant Malope expressed gratitude to the women who marched to the Union Buildings, paving the way for a dedicated month to women's recognition. She emphasized that her presence in uniform today is a result of the courage, determination, and resilience of those women who stood together with one voice. S Sgt Malope noted that there are equally powerful women serving side by side, inspiring one another.

Her introduction to tennis occurred when she was in Grade 9 at the Ikageng Tennis Courts in Potchefstroom, where she lived with her aunt.

S Sgt Malope stressed the extra effort women put in to gain recognition and highlighted their significant contributions to organizations, as they are not only homemakers but also vital contributors.

The late Maj Gen Make: A Gentle Giant Remembered

As a thriving young man affected by the politics of his era, his political activeness with the liberation movement placed him under the watch of the Special Branch Operations of the Police which altered the course of his life when he was compelled to skip the country to join the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) and its armed wing known as the Azania Peoples Liberation Army (APLA) in Botswana.

“We have experienced great pain and loss as an organization in the past couple of months.” said Colonel S.N.N. Ngqakayi as he presided both the memorial and funeral service of the late Major General (Retired) Lifeni Zwelibanzi Make held respectively on the 21st and 23rd of July 2023 at Thaba Tshwane City Hall, Pretoria.

Major General Lifeni Make was born in Evaton on the 16th of November 1961 into a religious and Pan Africanist family which was involved in the liberation of the African People of Azania. He started his Primary and Junior High School in Evaton, later proceeding to Vlakfontein Technical High School in Pretoria where he completed his matric in 1979.

His love and passion for physics and mathematics influenced his choice of occupation which boosted him take up employment as a Chemical Analyst at Vadek Paints post matric in 1980.

While in exile, his impeccable acumen in physics and mathematics proved to be beneficial in the liberation movement, prompting his deployment to Nigeria to further acquire skills at the University of Sokoto where he graduated with an Honours Science Degree in Biochemistry. Upon his return from Nigeria in 1985, he spent time in Zimbabwe and further deployed to Botswana where he remained until 1992 before returning to his native country.

At the advent of democracy, a unified Defence Force, made up of the statutory forces and nonstatutory forces of the liberation movement was created. As a result he integrated into the South African National Defence Force in 1994 and was appointed into the rank of Colonel serving in the South African Military Health Service.

The late Maj Gen (Ret) Make completed all his military course and was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in 2000 and further promoted to the rank of Major General in 2004. He left the Department of Military Veterans in 2012, where he became Deputy Director General. He retired from the Department of Military Veterans in 2019 until his untimely passing on 15 July 2023.

Major General Make was a grounded leader who served with determination and striving for a better future for the members in the Defence Force.

In Memoriam: Honouring the Life of Brigadier General Excellent Xolani Currie Brigadier General Excellent Xolani Currie was born on November 23, 1962, in Alice, a small town in the Eastern Cape. He is the son of the late Nonceba Macisane Currie and Dickson Mkhaza. Brig Gen Currie embarked on his educational path at Gilton Primary School, where he received his primary schooling. His commitment to education led him to complete his matric at Mpambani-Mzimba High School in Alice.

His career began when he secured his first job as an Administration Clerk at the University of Fort Hare in Alice. While at the University of Fort Hare, he aspired to further his education and applied to study Radiography at Pelonomi Hospital through the Free State Technikon.

In 1982, his dedication paid off when he was accepted into the program. Brig Gen Currie successfully completed his Radiography studies in 1984, a testament to his academic perseverance. Subsequently, in April 1985, he joined Garankuwa Hospital, now known as Dr George Mukhari Hospital, where he devoted his skills and expertise until December 1990. In January 1991, he took another significant step in his career by joining MEDUNSA as a Radiography lecturer.

Brig Gen Currie's academic achievements were both extensive and diverse. He earned a Postgraduate Diploma in International Research Ethics from the University of Cape Town in 2007, a Master of Public Health with a specialization in Health Systems Management and Epidemiology (Cum Laude) from MEDUNSA in 2003, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from

UNISA in 1989, majoring in Anthropology and Psychology.

He integrated into the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in February 1996, following his earlier service with uMkhonto weSizwe, the military arm of the African National Congress (ANC). Throughout his military career, Brig Gen Currie held various positions, each a testament to his leadership and expertise. His contributions as the Director Ancillary Health in the South African Military Health Service Headquarters were invaluable. Before this, he served in roles such as Senior Staff Officer Ancillary Health, Officer Commanding Project Phidisa, and Regulatory Oversight and Ethics Committee Manager for Project Phidisa. His dedication to advancing medical research ethics and health systems was evident in his numerous accomplishments.

Gen Currie played a pivotal role during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, serving as the Chairperson of the COVID-19 committee for the military health, where his guidance and dedication made a significant impact.

He specialised in the field of clinical research, presenting papers and publishing significant work. And he also took the initiative to promote health research through his involvement in the Surgeon General's Academic Days, a platform for the South African Military Health Service professionals and its stakeholders to share their health research projects.

service was acknowledged with several medals in recognition of his dedication to the SANDF. These included the Unitas Medal, the SA Service Medal for internal operations, the loyal Service Medal for 10 years of service in uMkhonto weSizwe (SMB MK), and the General Service Medal for 20 years of service (PF-SILVER), along with a 30 years certificate of long service.

In January 2020, he reached a significant milestone, completing 40 years of dedicated service.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs Pamela Currie his three children, Anda, Xolani Jnr and Avuziwe.
