Welcome to the new Thorvald and Tora! Congratulations on your choice of study. It`s a choice I can promise you that you won`t regret – as long as you have the Ås-spirit. The student life here is unique, and everyone can find their niche. My challenge to you: Seize every opportunity you can, and you`ll get friends and unique experiences you can only dream of having elsewhere! I give Ås a lot of praise, but there are downsides to being a student as well. Luckily, we`ve got Samfunnet where you can relax with some coffee in Caféklubben, enjoy a cheap meal if you don`t feel like cooking for yourself, grab a beer at a revue or concert – all this together with other NMBU students. The advantage of being in a small town, is that everyone usually meets up at Samfunnet! Thorvald and Tora is you and me, the average Ås-student. We define the Ås-spirit through our involvement outside of school. There are a lot of new things you must figure out and learn. I therefore recommend you to visit the introduction course (both part I and II) at Samfunnet, and learn more about your possibilities here. The traditions, stories, culture, student unions and everything we as student can accomplish together has no equal. Become a member of Samfunnet, it is money well spent. The membership advantages are great, and you`ll immediately become a part of our community. If you wish to make an extra effort for the student welfare, you may sign up in a committee. We`ve got a broad spectre of jobs filled by students – no volunteer work, no Samfunnet! Security, bar, sound and lighting are amongst those that need your help. Congratulations as a fresh citizen at NMBU, and welcome to Ås and Adamstua! There is a lot to become involved with here at NMBU, whether you`re interested in song and music, the outdoors, photography or other social activities. Our unique student environment is the product of our many student unions and societies. In addition, you as a student have the opportunity to influence your own and other students` life by involving yourself in the student democracy. How great is that? NMBU is known for its good student environment. The students’ well-being and social activity is an important part of student life and key to achieving what you want. The university has high quality studies and a strong focus on a good learning environment. By talking to your class representative, your departments representative or us in the student parliament, you`ve got a golden opportunity to influence this. It is important that we have a good study environment so that we can learn what we`re supposed to, because that`s why we`re here! It is the good student environment and theoretical knowledge that makes a NMBU student something of its own and wanted everywhere. What`s needed to further develop this University and make us even better is something we students know best. That`s why it is so important to become involved in the student democracy. If you take a position in the student democracy, not only will you have an opportunity to shape NMBU as you`d like, you`ve also got the opportunity to challenge yourself, get to know amazing people, learn something new you wouldn`t have learned in a lecture hall and get experience few others have that`s going to be worth a lot later in life. The great thing about NMBU is that no decisions are made without consulting with the students. The road is short and the threshold to get heard is low. Welcome to the Samfunnet! Samfunnet in Ås is one of Norway's best student societies. As a first year student in Ås, you will certainly be overwhelmed by everything that`s going on here at the students' own house, Samfunnet. The Student society organizes a bodega night every Wednesday and Friday. You can enjoy concerts, discos, shows, debates, lectures and the like. You should definitely try it out, you will not regret it! In addition, there is a plethora of clubs and organizations that use the house for various activities. It is full of life, and you'll find everything from politics and philosophy to music, singing and cabaret. Memberships As a student at NMBU, you have the option to join the Student society. Membership costs 250 NOK for an entire year, money you will save because of membership advantages in just a few weeks! As members of the Student society you will recieve these advantages: Free admission or reduced price on all events, at this and other student communities around the country. Voting rights at the general meeting and community meetings. An opportunity to participate in various committees. Participation in one of the nation's best student environments. The Student society is based on the voluntary efforts of its members. As a member of the Society, you have to put in a little effort for the community 1-2 times a semester in the form of community service. These nights you work for others, while others work for you the rest of the time. Community service can be bartending, security, wardrobe etc.. If you want to do more than your community service, Samfunnet has a number of committees that almost always needs new members. These are sound, lighting, bar, Tuntreet, disco and security. These committees work at least three times during the semester and will be put on the «free-list» which means you get in for free on most events. Where does the money go? Samfunnet is owned by the students. The first part was built by volunteer students in 1934. Aud.Max is owned by NMBU. The Student society must pay its share of the operating costs for the building (around 600 000). In addition to this, the community is always building new and restauring old things all the time. Every autumn, the Student society arranges UKA. This festival also gives its profits back to Samfunnet. We hope you will have a great time at Samfunnet and make many new friends. Are you ready for the most important UKA in 2014? (UKA means the WEEK, but it lasts for a lot longer than that). UKA i Ås (the WEEK in Ås) is Norways longest student festival which lasts for four weeks in October. Arranging these festivities is tradition at universities in Norway and it started as early as 1924, and we have done it in Ås every second year since. In 2014 it will be the first time UKA i Ås is arranged in NMBU’s history, due to the recent name change of the university. What you can do during UKA? We will be hosting activitites almost every day! Ranging from the traditional UKErevue (show with humour, song and dance), loads of concerts, theme bars and beer fest to sports days, debates, presentations, international day, quizes and competitions. We got something for everyone! More than 1/3 of NMBU’s students will volunteer to make this the happening of the year and the profit from UKA will help operate Samfunnet for the next two years. Through solidarity and effort we make a better everyday for the students. It is not just internal focus when we arrange UKA i Ås. We also care about the outside world and the environment, and we run a green profile throughout the week. In addition to this we have a solidarity project each UKA that collects money for a good purpose, also known as UKEhjelpa. Why become a volunteer for UKA i Ås? UKA i Ås and the student environment here at NMBU is nationally known for it’s student involvement. UKA i Ås actually involves the same amount of officials as UKA in Trondheim even though they are ten times more students at their university. In 2012 among 1200 students did a great effort to arrange UKA i Ås – and with so many commited volunteers you can imagine this is: FUN! To be able to host this festival, we are completely dependent of your spirit and creativity. Even though all work with UKA is based on volunteer work, officials will get plenty of benefits. The Business Committee (NLU) is a committee at Samfunnet that are organizing the Career Day at NMBU, working towards professionalizing other contact that Samfunnet, UKA and Tuntreet have towards companies and other external actors, and arrange different company presentations. The NLU board has 5 members, where the leader and the Career Day coordinator are selected at Samfunnets general assembly in the fall. The remaining three are the financial manager, the event manager and the sponsorship manager. NLU was established for the first time in 2011. In addition to being a giant tree on the lawn between the Cirkus and Tivoli buildings, Tuntreet is also the student newspaper at NMBU. We write about important events in Ås and things relevant to the student’s life. Tuntreet saw the light of day as early as 1946, making it well established at campus. The paper has a bi- weekly circulation of 1700 copies in the autumn and spring parallels and is distributed all over campus. All the people involved in creating the paper are students at NMBU. Anniversary for Studentsamfunnet i Ås - 150 years! 2014 is a year for anniversaries, and «Studentsamfunnet i Ås» is no exception! September 6th in 1864 it was started, and has since been a big part of all Ås-students life. This means that in 2014 a huge anniversary is celebrated for NMBU’s oldest and largest student union! Studentsamfunnet i Ås made sure that the students in 1934 got their own studentbuilding, “Samfunnsbygningen”, among the students just «samfunnet», and operation of this depends on contributions from the students themselves, so called “samfunnstjenester”. These are volunteer hours that students spend at events, in order to keep the welfare facilities up and contribute to the community.
Student Festival "UKA in Ås" has its origins in the Student Union, and the proceeds from this festival contributes to the Community Building, and events conducted here can be maintained. Throughout the years it has been laid down hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours in the Student Community. Today's students will therefore now celebrate this enormous engagement with among others a historic photo exhibition, release of both student Songbook and historical book, as well as a major anniversary revue. Hankattforeningen stiftet 1902 (Tomcat society) is the oldest student fraternity in Norway. Established in 1902 by The Great Johan L. Hirsch (first director of NLH, now NMBU). Twelve men live together in a frat house called “Faderloftet” at the top of jubilo student appartments Pentagon. Foreningen Hunkatten (The Shecat Sorority) is the only Exclusive Sorority for Women here at the agricultural Metropolis, and was founded by 10 female Students in 1960. Trøndernes Fagforening Is a social society for trøndere (People from Trøndelag) that have been sent south to Ås. We fight hard for our tradition, humor and mentality as trøndere. We gather three times a year for our main get togethers, but we also cultivate our trøderske culture through outher events throughout the year. This includes food and drink, song, as well as physical activities. Students with good trøder qualities may become members. Dale-Gudbrand Is a 22 year old student society for «døle» from Gudbrandsdalen; From Lillehammer in the south to Lesja in the north, and between Ottadalen and Gausdal. The student society seeks to bring døla together and conserve their culture. We have numerous get-togethers throughout the year, including råkåfisklag. Nordlands trompet Our student society was established 25/9 1936, which makes it one of the oldest societies in Ås. Our purpose is to gather students from northern Norway. We spread knowledge about northern Norway and our culture. Our student unions name comes from the poem by Petter Dass with the same name. We have four large meeting, known as blots, per year. We recruit new members at the autumn blot during a very solemn ceremony. We have one blot for every season with different traditions. We have our own bar during UKA. .

North Eastern Valley Karsk-, Curvature Cake and Evangelical Leage (NØKKEL) Founded 2005. The guild for North Eastern Valley inhabitants who study at NMBU. We are concerned with traditional and social events, such as surpøsjelag (sour sausage dinner) rakfisk (straight fish), fastelavnslag (shrovetide celebration), afterparty and barbecue. To be accepted into the guild you must primarily have lived long in the North Eastern Valley either in Os, Tolga (Pine Hillside), Tynset (Barrelseat) or Alvdal (Elf Valley). Individual reviews for the locations Folldal and Rendal (Clean Valley). You have to like traditions, food and activities from the North-Eastern Valleys, for example karsk, surpøsje and chrome cake. Løgnanslaget is an association for students at Ås with the purpose of gathering peoples belonging to Rogaland. Then we will be able to converse freely in an impeccable assembly, as well as share experience about other regions. We work together to preserve the traditions of Rogaland, so that they will not be forgotten when we are out in the big world.
Music
Pikekoret IVAR is University of Life Sciences female choir who sing beautiful melodies every Thursday at 7 pm. The girls sing about everything that is close to their heart; flowers, dresses, love, spring, “Kjell” and their hero Ivar F. Andresen. Self-written songs often appear. They have an exquisite wardrobe filled with beautiful dresses from the colorful decades. The IVAR-flower is always carried near their chest and they dress up with sequins, flowers and stilettos. Lærken the Choir Lærken (=The Larch) is the oldest choir at NMBU and emerged in 1972. It is a choir for men and women who want to spread awareness of the great Norwegian writer Kjell Aukrust and sing not so serious songs about livestock. We sing self-written songs in Norwegian with familiar and not so familiar melodies. Every spring we put on a revue (=show) with humoristic sketches and songs. The choir Noe Ganske Annet Do you enjoy singing? Join the choir Noe Ganske Annet (Something Quite Different)! We are a mixed choir, and our ultimate goal is to spread the joy of singing wherever we might be and to whomever we might encounter. The student choir Selah was established in august 2009 and is a choir open for all students. We are a group of girls and boys that love to sing. There are no restrictions on how good a singer you are, but it is important that you like to worship God through singing! During the year we sing on the Christmas consert (with all the other NMBU choirs) and arrange our own easter consert, we also have some other performances during the year. Åsblæst’n Have you ever played in an orchestra/band? Åsblæst’n is NMBU’s only student orchestra/band, and have been playing since 1974. Åsblæst’n aim to spread happiness and musical harmony among everyone who are willing, or unwilling, to listen. We are always looking for new potential people who want to play with us. We’re particularly looking for people who play tuba, trombone, baritone and althorn, but all other instruments are ok as well. If you don’t have you own instrument, we might have some you can use. The male choir Over Rævne Do you like Mountains, Beer and Women? Do you have chest hair and a powerful voice? Then the male choir Over Rævne is for you! Over Rævne was founded in BEdogaen in 1993, and is still going strong! Our clothing is inspired by the Norwegian farmers at the beginning of the 1900s. StNMBUb is NMBU's only, oldest and best big band. We play music from a wide array of genres and have concerts and gigs throughout the year. The band is composed of horns, percussion, and vocalists, and we are the only music organization with a professional director. Rockeklubben (The Rock Club) has a room equipped with guitar/bass amplifiers, drums, keyboard and a PA system. As a member, you/your band get three hours a week where the room is all yours. The Swing Club Snurrebass The Swing Club Snurrebass is open for everyone enjoying dancing. We primarily dance Norwegian Folk Swing. Every Monday and Thursday we meet at Samfunnet for social dancing. On Thursdays we have free courses in swing, and there will be given frequently beginner courses during the whole semester. In addition, we will repeat the success of having a free series of West Coast Swing classes, for the third semester in a row. BB cowboys are one of the newest members of the association family at NMBU (founded 05.10.2011), yet we have still managed to attend most of the association events and gotten many new members. We are an association for both sexes regardless of the main subjects, musical skills or geographical location. Cowboys live a relaxed life where there is life here and now that counts. We are an association where the social environment is in focus. We seek to find fun and enjoyable things to do together, whether it is lassoing, line dancing, cinema or association evenings. We do not say no to a party if the opportunity arises. If you want to spread the joy of cowboy life at the Agrarmetropol it is reason enough to apply. So grab your hat and boots and join in on the fun! Feminin & Fornem is a social sorority based on democratic principles, established on the 24th of August 2008. The sorority consists of a unique composition of lovely, dedicated and humorous young ladies that want to secure a good solidarity among the students. The members behave in a feminine manner dressed in their blue dresses, and are often seen at different events at campus. Around Christmas time the sorority shows extra goodwill and arranges a waffle sale for a charitable purpose. Every year there are also several fund raising campaigns in relations to United Aid. Feminin & Fornem puts up a revue every other fall, and builds a bar during UKA. Koneklubben Freidig is an all girl's society that consists of members who want to preserve traditions, and simultaneously be confident and independent women. Gents Academy is an association that builds on the strength of differences in people. The Academy was created with focus on the somewhat forgotten art of the gentleman. They maintain their values, have gatherings and do classy appearances in the bodega. It is known that the academy is a factory where boys enter and men appear. Collegium Alfa is an academic and social association consisting of dedicated and cheerful girls. As a member of Collegium Alfa we provide a unique network of girls who all contribute different expertise to help each other up - through academic events and internal coursing, company visits and close contact with industry. Special interests Oikos - Organic gardening group The main focus of the organic gardening group is promoting organic gardening and sustaiable living, by managing an organic garden. The group is highly social, and is open for everybody. The activities are announced trough our Facebook group ( https:// www.facebook.com/groups/oikos.umb ), our mailing list, on athene, with posters and trough general gossip. There are many exchange students in our group, and we consider ourself an international group. Our announcements are done in both Norwegian and English, and at the events, we talk in english if there are english speakers present. The activities that were arranged last year were building projects, guided mushroom-picking trips, cheese making, felting, pasta and bread-making course, beer and cider brewing, guided trip to Ramme Gaard, etc. The vegetable garden itself is in any case a nice place to hang out inbetween stressful study work days. During the warmer months, we meet in the garden every thursday at 5 pm, to sow, weed and harvest vegetables, berries and fruits. But activities are arranged throughout the year, and we are always open for activity suggestions. Many of our activities are based on the initiative of interested students. If you are interested in getting to know us better, you can meet us in the vegetable garden at thursdays after 5 pm. Ås student language society The student language society at NLH (before NMBU became a univerity) was first brought together in 1908. From that time it has been inactive several times, but is active as of now. Ås student language society is an organization for Ås-students that like new Norwegian (nynorsk) and other dialects. This fall we`ll have three talks, as well as other fun (and useful) things. The first talk will be held by Kristin Fridtun in September. Laget Laget is a nationwide organization with a vision to make Jesus believed, loved and followed at schools and universities in Norway. At Ås, Laget is one of two Christian student organizations. We therefore have members coming from different churches, and we are one of the largest organizations at Ås. We have meetings every Thursday at 7 pm, in the meeting room at Samfunnet. Throughout the school year we also arrange trips and other fun activities. UMBI The student athletic club is responsible for the daily sport activities at the NMBU, in co-operation with SIĂ…S. NMBUI is managed by and for the students, and offers and organizes the sports and physical activities. We want to create good social and active meeting-places for you who want to participate in sports in combination with your education. NMBUI is for you who want to make new friendships, attempt new sports, as well as continue former activities and also participating in athletic competitions. As of today we offer cycling, rowing, handball, football, orientation, badminton, basketball, tennis, dancing, floorball, skiing, climbing, capoeira, MMA, rugby, Australian football and volleyball. NMBU-students can participate in all of these sports for only 125,- NOK each term. NMBUI is an athletic club for everyone, whether you want to participate just because it is social and fun or you want to exercise more seriously, is all up to you. Several of the sports also have a team playing in a league. We are situated in the GG-hall and payment for membership can be done at the reception desk there. By joining an athletic club you will get important experience, friends and memories for life. You will not regret coming to a training session. NMBU friluftsliv is a hiking group for those who like fresh air, high mountains, green trees and campfires. Our events range from traditional outdoor activities such as hiking in the mountains and forests, both summer and winter, to kayak courses. We organize a campfire every second Tuesday each month, hikes in the Ă…s-area and varied weekend trips throughout the semester. StudentKRIK ÅS KRIK is short for Kristen Idrettskontakt (Christian Sports Contact) and is a sports organization with local groups throughout the country. In addition the organization is engaged with international work (CHRISC). KRIK have a local group for students here at Ås and we have training sessions every Monday, from 8 pm to 10 pm at Åsgard School. There are also a few training sessions in Åshallen, in the course of the semester. During the training we play games, do various ball activities and in the break there is a devotional and information. KoR is a student association for those who love horses and ridning, either you are a beginner or an experienced rider. We have a small stable at NMBU’s own farm which is managed by voluntary students. Our main focus is the riding school, for students, adults and teenagers, and we have as a goal to have a wide range of courses at different levels both in dressage and show jumping. We also have a trailride course for the more unambitious people. At the weekends, we sometimes arrange other courses with instructors for other stables. Competitions are also arranged twice a year. The Nordic Games is an annual sports and social event lasting about a week every September, and this year its our great pleasure to be hosts. Participants from the Agricultural and Veterinarian Universities in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark gather to compete in sporting events like soccer, handball, volleyball, athletics, swimming, shooting, horseback riding, tennis in addition to several other. The social aspect is very important, and in true NMBU-style there will be a theme party, banquet and other fantastic social happenings. Making friends and having fun is the most important thing. Naturviterne is a part of Akademikerne, a large trade union for people with higher education in Norway. The Student Democracy at NMBU Do you want to improve your everyday study situation? This is your opportunity! You can do so by being engaged into the student democracy at NMBU. Either as an elected class representative and represent your class in the Student Council at your institute, as an elected representative in the Student Parliament or as an elected representative in the Institute board – there are numerous opportunities. You can also be engaged and committed by addressing the student democracy about specific cases which can be improved or which are important for you as a student. The Student Democracy at NMBU is the student’s way of raising their voices and concerns towards the central administration, the institutes, the Ministry of education, SiÅs and other organs and committees on Campus. The student democracy is being run on a daily base by the Student Board, where the President and the Vice-President is employed full time. The board does also have an international officer, a welfare officer, a marketing officer and a board member. These representatives are elected by all the students in vote where all students at NMBU can participate. The Student Board has their office close to the student post, in the center of the Campus. At their office you can find coffee and newspapers. Between 12-14 you are sure to find someone to talk to, but you are welcome to stop by anytime! At every institute there is a student council which consists of committed and eager students. Amongst them are the President and Vice-President which are also in the institute board. The Student Council handles all cases from research to education and can make suggestions and recommendations for the institute. The Student Parliament is the highest democratic organ for the students between the general assemblies. Student Parliament meetings are conducted three times each semester and decide upon different resolutions which create strong and effective guidelines for the university administration. The student Parliament travel initiates each semester with a kick-off weekend where the representatives are being educated in student politics, debating and get to know one another. The General assembly is the highest democratic organ at NMBU and is held once every semester. This is open for all students where they can vote and make amendments as to what the Student Board should work on in the next semester.
