Welcome to Ås! You have probably heard this before and will probably hear it again – at least once: Congratulations, and welcome as a new student at NMBU! Of all the places you could have ended up in this world, are Ås and NMBU one of the best places – hear my words. The assortment above is probably one of the assertive kind; but independent if you chose to come here by free will, didn’t get in to where you wanted to, or ended up here by accident, I think you will quickly realize how good this was, and that you will have a blast! You know, in addition to study by Norway’s maybe most environmentally focused university, you will also have the possibility to be a part of Norway’s maybe most environmentally focused student society! Not environmentally focused as in having solar panels, recycling or zero emissions, but environmentally focused as in focusing on a good student- and social environment. Thorvald and Tora is the name of this, but also the name of all the citizens of the Student Society in Ås. This is very useful to know. Thorvald and Tora have been working to keep up the Ås spirit since the beginning, at the same time as keeping the Ås bubble alive. There is room for everyone here, and we demand that you are yourself, and that you are with us. The building of Samfunnet is the place where we gather outside school, and Samfunnet is the last stop in the journey in growing from young to less young – I am now referring to The Grand Tour. Engage in political debates, social societies, quiz and sports, go on concerts, revues or just a beer with good company. Ås is a small place, and it will not be more fun that what we make ourselves. Lucky for us is this something we are very good at! Become a member of Studentsamfunnet, and be a part of The Great Tour, and we will welcome you with open arms. We have good lecturers, exciting study programs, and a fantastic student environment. Dear new students The University Foundation for Student Life in Ås (SiÅs) is a welfare organization for students at the Norwegian University for life siences(NMBU). We run student housing, international guest accommondation, fitness and sports center, bookshop, print and copy shop, cafeterias, catering and rental of meeting and banqueting rooms and sosial gatherings. In addition, we part-finance our health services, Health center for youth and students in Ås. SiÅs works for the students welfare while studying. We work for giving you a roof over your head, food in your belly and the ability to keep both body and mind in good condition throughout the study. SiÅs has 34 employees who work for you in five different departments on Campus, in addition to the student health center. Sports: Eika Sports Center, with fitness center and sports halls. Eateries: Lunch cafeterias at Sørhellinga, Økonomikantina, Husdyrfagkantina and RealTek kantina. In addition, you will find a Coffee shop in the UR building and Café Klubben at the Student Society. Housing: Keeps in Smia by the duck pond Bookstore: Is also located in Smia at the duck pond Administration: Office in the same building as Studentposten, where you also find the mailboxes. Health: Health center for youth and students offers tutoring and help on sexual health, mental health and lifestyle problems. The service is free and there is no age limit for NMBU students. THE ORDER PROTECTION COMITEE

Order Protection Committee make sure everyone is safe when visisting the Student Society Building. They guard the entrance and inside the building. There will be held protection course and security training, which gives you the opportunities to work for security firms. THE BAR COMMITTEE

The Bar Committee works at all the bars at the Student Society Building during concerts and other events. As a member you also get free training in learning how to mix and make delicious drinks. THE SOUND COMMITTEE

The Sound Committee has the responsibility for everything regarding sound during concerts, revues and other events. The Film and Photo Committee film concerts and make after movies, we capture the mood, the voice and all the moments you cant catch with your phone camera. THE FOOD COMITTEE

As a member of the entrance committee you will welcome guest during party nights. BARBEQUE ON PENTAGON

PLACE: Pentagon TIME: Saturday 10th of August, 6.00 p.m. The principal, the student democracy council and the student society board will serve hot dogs and other BBQ-food. This is a tradition with lots of fun where you get to meat up with other new students! GRASS COURSE Despite the name, this is not about grass. This event is an outstanding opportunity to get a taste of the wide range of different social associations, unions, groups and teams at NMBU and The Student Society. NMBU is well known for its students big engagement and many social activities beside studies. There are about 80 different student associations that covers everything from politics, religion, music, dance, sports and much more. The student board urges all new students to take part in this energetic and including student society! On the 14th of August at 12.00 you get to receive information on some of these associations and the different boards on the Grass Course part one in Aud. Max. Meet them on stand and hear them perform or intrduce themself on stage. Of course, there is no class these hours. Part 2 of the Grass Cource takes place on Friday the 16th of August. MATRICULATION

The matriculation will be on Friday, 16th of August at 13:00/1:00 p.m in front of the Urbuilding! No classes after 12.00 Welcome!

Næringslivsutvalget at NMBU is the link between NMBU’s students and the business sector. NU is a body under the Society in Ås, but exists for all students at NMBU. Næringslivsutvalget’s main job is to make the students at NMBU and companies familiar with each other and to promote career-related events at Campus Ås. NU also arranges several career-promoting events themselves. On October 9th, NU arranges the Career Day, NMBU’s largest career fair and your foremost opportunity to get in touch with future employers. At the Career Day, around 80 companies are in a position to make the students acquainted with the job opportunities in their company, all from summer jobs, internships and permanent employment. It also offers free CV photography and CV review, so you are 100% ready to apply for your dream job. Every year we need career day hosts who help to assist the companies during the Career Day and assist with raising and lowering. This is highly recommended as one gets a chance to get extra close to the companies and show off their best side. New of the year is that we now open the way to take their social service as a career day host! So remember to sign up as a career host when you sign up for community service this semester! Tuntreet is the student paper of the university and an organ for Studentsamfunnet in Ås. In Tuntreet, you will find a wide cover of the colourful student life, relevant cases, and so much more. Tuntreet is made of and for students, and develop after what is relevant for the Ås students. “If you haven’t had your picture in Tuntreet, you have to take your main courses again”, like Einar Gerhardsen could have said. The editors consist of students who work with text, foto, layout, illustration, correction and translation. Some have previous experience from media, and other just find out that they have a natural talent, while others just want to learn how to make a paper. Anyways, you shouldn’t hesitate to send an application to Tuntreet. In addition to make papers, we have social events like publishing beer, pre-parties, Oscarfest and other things. As members of Tuntreeredaksjonen you wil get committee prices at Samfunnet. You can join to form a paper read by five thousand students! UKA i Ås is a cultural festival arranged in October every other year. UKA i Ås was first held in 1924, and in 2020 it is arranged for the 50th time! The program is wide, and consist of everything from concerts to UKErevue, Oktoberfest, food festival, charity run, and so much more. In addition, you will have a small taste of the UKElife when miniUKA is held the spring before. This is something to look forward to! Norway’s longest cultural festival will not make itself, and almost a third of NMBU’s students work together to create UKA i Ås. The festival’s profit goes to operate Studentsamfunnet i Ås. In 2018 there were about 1200 voluntary students who together arranged UKA i Ås. Voluntary work, unity, and effort is what counts to make a better everyday life for us students. The core of UKA i Ås is volunteering. Therefore, we need that you contribute! Through UKA in Ås you will make new friends, maybe for life? Student Groups, Organizations and Associations One of the main reasons why Ås has such a good student environment is because of the many student teams, organisations and associations. New students will see a lot of these at the information course (Graskurs) on August 16th. Here, every organization or association will present itself and you will get an insight in some of the associations’ activities, and how to sign up or apply. By joining one of the more than 80 associations at NMBU you will get a bigger network of friends across your field of studies and you will get a better social life outside of school. The Cultural Trinity Hankattforeningen stiftet 1902 Hankattforeningen St. 1902 is Norway’s oldest student association. Johan L. Hirsch, first director at NLH, now NMBU, founded Hankattforening in 1902, and was our first Managing Director. Hankattforeningen stands as an exponent of the dynamic, for the ability and willingness to penetrate the roads the orthodox fanaticism puts barriers to humanity. Choirs and Other Music Groups Mannskoret Over Rævne Do you like Mountains, Beer and Women? Do you have chest hair and a powerful voice? Then the male choir Over Rævne is for you! Over Rævne was founded in BEdogaen in 1993, and is still going strong! Our clothing is inspired by the Norwegian farmers at the beginning of the 1900s. Pikekoret IVAR Is University of Life Sciences female choir who sing beautiful melodies every Thursday at 7 pm? The girls sing about everything that is close to their heart; flowers, dresses, love, spring, “Kjelle” and their hero Ivar F. Andresen. Self-written songs often appear. They have an exquisite wardrobe filled with beautiful dresses from the colourful decades. The IVAR-flower is always carried near their chest and they dress up with sequins, flowers and stilettos. Sangkoret Lærken Lærken (=The Larch) is the oldest choir at NMBU and emerged in 1972. It is a choir for men and women who want to spread awareness of the great Norwegian writer Kjell Aukrust and sing not so serious songs about livestock. We sing self-written songs in Norwegian with familiar and not so familiar melodies. Every spring we put on a revue (=show) with humorous sketches and songs. We have our own place at the student houses called Bohemen, which is open for everyone who wants drop by for a coffee, a song or a pint. Studentstorbandet ved NMBU st. 1912 Studentstorbandet NMBU st. 1912 is the universityâ€™s only, oldest and best band. We play varied music at concerts and gigs throughout the year. The band consists of wind band, comp and vocalists. Otherwise, we are the only song / music association that has an external conductor. Swingklubben Snurrebass Swingklubben Snurrebass is open for everyone who enjoys dancing. We primarily dance Norwegian Folk Swing and meet Mondays and Thursdays at Samfunnet for social dance. On Thursdays there is always a free course in Folk Swing. The first Thursday of every month we hold a beginner course. Have you played in corps? Åsblæst’n is the best and only student body at Ås, and since 1974 has had the purpose of spreading joy and musical well-being to anyone who is willing and / or unwilling to listen to / experience its appearance. Social Clubs and Unions BB Cowboys are one of the newest members of the association family at NMBU (founded 05.10.2011), yet we have still managed to attend most of the association events and gotten many new members. We are an association for both sexes regardless of the main subjects, musical skills or geographical location. We seek to find fun and enjoyable things to do together, whether it is lassoing, line dancing, cinema or association evenings. We do not say no to a party if the opportunity arises. Feminim & Fornem is a social association based on democratic principles, established on the 24th of August 2008. The sorority consists of a unique composition of lovely, dedicated and humorous young ladies that want to secure a good solidarity among the students. The members behave in a feminine manner dressed in their blue dresses, and are often seen at different events at campus. Around Christmas time the sorority shows extra goodwill and arranges a waffle sale for a charitable purpose. Every year there are also several fund raising campaigns in relations to United Aid. Feminin & Fornem puts up a revue every other fall, and builds a bar during UKA. Budeieforeninga Budeieforeninga – to benefit and enjoy resources! The members of Budeieforeninga works on benefiting resources effectively in both a new and old fashion. Clubs and Unions for Special Interests Oikis – Ås Økolog The main focus of the organic gardening group is promoting organic gardening and sustainable living, by managing an organic garden. The group is highly social, and is open for everybody. The activities are announced trough our Facebook groug, our mailing list, on athene, with posters and trough general gossip. There are many exchange students in our group, and we consider ourself an international group. Our announcements are done in both Norwegian and English, and at the events, we talk in english if there are english speakers present. The activities that were arranged last year were building projects, guided mushroom-picking trips, cheese making, felting, pasta and bread- making course, beer and cider brewing, guided trip to Ramme Gaard, etc. The vegetable garden itself is in any case a nice place to hang out in-between stressful study work days. During the warmer months, we meet in the garden every Thursday at 5 pm, to sow, weed and harvest vegetables, berries and fruits. But activities are arranged throughout the year, and we are always open for activity suggestions. Many of our activities are based on the initiative of interested students. If you are interested in getting to know us better, you can meet us in the vegetable garden at Thursdays after 5 pm. Ås-studentenes mopedeierunion In the battle of 1847, one of Norway’s greatest biker heroes, Jonas Øglænd was born. This uniqueness of a trader had the flair for something that would look to others as heavy. The Ås students mopedeierunion is a vehicle history association for those who want to drive cheaply. The moped must be old and Norwegian (any exceptions can be approved). You should have the ability to change the spark plug and have a genuine interest in experiencing Follo in max 50 km / h. We organize weekly moped tours, the moped party ”moped mania”, the exhibition ”mopedekspo” and do everything we can and manage to create moped memories. PS: It’s super cool if you have the Comet set. Gay på Landet Is a social organization for all LGBTQ+ students at the university. Our goal is to create a forum where queer students can feel at home, and meet other queer students. We host movie nights and parties, with snacks and fun, and we’re planning some table top gaming nights and a julebord (Norwegian tradition where we go out to eat and maybe get drunk, sometime in November). The team is a nationwide organization that works to make Jesus believed in, loved and followed in schools and campuses in Norway. Here at Ås, Laget is one of only two Christian student organizations. Ås feministiske studenter Have you put your glasses on? Do you miss female philosophers in ex. phil. and mathematics? Did you know that the first female mathematician in Norway was a docent at Ås? That men’s biggest fear at a tinder date is that the woman is ugly, and women’s biggest fear is to get raped? We in Ås Feminist Students see that there is inequality between gender in our society. An inequality that cannot only be solved by achieving equal rights but that requires attitude changes. Attitudes that unfortunately are kept alive in the culture here at the university today. We believe that discrimination and oppression cannot be legitimized on the basis of tradition. NMBU Liberale Studenter NMBU Liberal Students Is a side-organisation to Venstre (the liberal party of Norway) and a studentparty for young, liberally minded people at Ås. Liberal Students gather students around the liberal ideals and traditions in Europe to create a more liberal campus where every lifestyle is tolerated, promote a forward-looking education policy and contribute to make Norway greener, more liberal and more caring. We wish to stand up for liberal values throughout Europe and a rulesbased world order. Liberal Students has as its foundation the view that all people are born free and equal and have the right to live their lives as desired. We collaborate with Venstre among others through providing input to the new policies of Ås kommune, the new region of Viken and cooperate closely with our neigbouring chapters in the Osloregion. Sports and Leisure NMBU Friluftsliv NMBU Friluftsliv is a hiking group for those who like fresh air, high mountains, green trees and campfires. Our events range from traditional outdoor activities such as hiking in the mountains and forests, both summer and winter, to kayak courses. We organize a campfire every second Tuesday each month, hikes in the Ås-area and varied weekend trips throughout the semester. As a member of NMBU friluftsliv (100,- per semester/150 per year) you get access to rental of hiking equipment, in addition to joining our hikes. NMBU Idrett (NMBUI) The student athletic club is responsible for the daily sport activities at the NMBU, in co-operation with SIĂ…S. Nordisk Landskamp The Nordic Games is an annual social sports event that lasts for just over a week. The competitors come from what used to be the colleges of agriculture in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. There are competitions in a lot of different sports, like most ball sports, shooting, swimming, track, rowing, tennis and others. In addition they focus on the social part, in the usual «NMBU-style», from theme parties to banquet with award ceremony for brave effort in the different competitions. This year it will be held in Denmark. You will get to know a lot of new people from NMBU and the other nordic countries. If you wanna get the best start of a new school year of study, contact us! NMBU Rumpeldunk (Quidditch) We are the official Quidditch team at the university in Ås. Quidditch is a really tough sport that follows the rules of the International Quidditch Association (IQA). We workout once a week and attend to the national championship at spring. Several of our players are previously champions, but as long as you’re willing to try and can bring on a good team spirit, there’s no other requirement. IUG Norway is a politically and religiously independent organization with the vision of stopping suffering by the help of engineers. Naturviterne Naturviterne, or Norwegian Association Of Natural Scientists, is a trade union for people who are working with or studying natural sciences, and care about sustainability. The International Students’ Union (ISU) is a national volunteer organization that includes all international students in Norway. Membership is free, and requires no registration. Spire is an environmental- and development organisation that works for a just and sustainable world. We want to see the bigger picture and how things are connected, and change the fundamental reasons that causes injustice. Therefore we have a focus on the environment, food security and international trade. The Development Fund is our mother organisation. IAESTE «The international association for the Exchange of stu dents for Technical Experience» is a large international student organization that purpose is to exchange students. NITO Studentene NITO Students are the organization for you who study engineering and technology education at bachelor and master’s level. With over 12,000 members, we are part of NITO, which is Norway’s largest organization for engineers and technologists with about 90,000 members. As a student member of NITO, you will have access to crash courses and other academic and social activities arranged at NMBU under the auspices of NITO. It can be anything from MatLab courses to boat driver courses and beer tasting. You also receive very good insurance offers as a student member of NITO and help you get work, including job search, assessment of CV and application and legal review of employment contract. Changemaker Ås studentlag Changemaker works creatively and politically to remove the causes of poverty and injustice in the world. These problems are created by human beings, and it is man who can solve them. Changemaker is working on highlighting problems, finding the solutions, and influencing policy makers to implement them. We work within five main themes; peace, global health, debt and capital flight, international trade and climate. Through creative campaigns, we have seen development problems on the political agenda and change politics. Changemaker is the youth organization of Norwegian Church Aid and is politically and religiously independent. With local law over the whole country, we are Norway’s largest youth organization working on development policy to change unfair structures. The student group at NMBU will hold a seminar on development policy issues through the ”Get Inspired” collaboration and we will implement Changemaker’s national campaigns focusing on the five main themes. Fremtiden i våre hender Ås Fremtiden I våre hender is Norway’s largest environmental and solidarity organization with over 25,000 members. BUA Bua is a small food cooperative shop on the NMBU campus. We are a non-profit organization built on work done by volunteers, where a majority of the participants are students. We sell the fairest products we can source for a wholesale price for members. Our goal with this initiative is to spread awareness about sustainable production and distribution of food and consumer goods, as a platform for sharing knowledge, organizing activities that inspire, and show the importance of biodiversity and ethical production. By being a member you can either help keeping the shop open or take part in one of our many working groups. The time you are asked to work is about four hours a month, but it is your own choice, it`s very flexible. All meetings and events are open to everyone.

The Student Democracy at NMBU Do you want to improve your everyday study situation? This is your opportunity! You can do so by being engaged in the student democracy at NMBU. Either as an elected class representative and represent your class in the Student Council at your institute, as an elected representative in the Student Parliament or as an elected representative in the Institute board – there are numerous opportunities. You can also be engaged and committed by addressing the student democracy about specific cases which can be improved or which are important for you as a student. The Student Democracy at NMBU is the student’s way of raising their voices and concerns towards the central administration, the institutes, the Ministry of education, SiÅs and other organs and committees on Campus. The student democracy is being run on a daily base by the Student Board, where the President and the Vice-President is employed full time. The board does also have an international officer, a welfare officer, a marketing officer and a board member. These representatives are elected by all the students in vote where all students at NMBU can participate. The Student Board has their office close to the student post, in the center of the Campus. At their office you can find coffee and newspapers. Between 12-14 you are sure to find someone to talk to, but you are welcome to stop by anytime! At every institute there is a student council which consists of committed and eager students. Amongst them are the President and Vice-President which are also in the institute board. The Student Council handles all cases from research to education and can make suggestions and recommendations for the institute. The Student Parliament is the highest democratic organ for the students between the general assemblies. Student Parliament meetings are conducted three times each semester and decide upon different resolutions which create strong and effective guidelines for the university administration. The student Parliament travel initiates each semester with a kick-off weekend where the representatives are being educated in student politics, debating and get to know one another. The General assembly is the highest democratic organ at NMBU and is held once every semester. This is open for all students where they can vote and make amendments as to what the Student Board should work on in the next semester. At NMBU the distance to the top administration is short, and the students are represented in all councils. The University chaplain, Sigurd A. Bakke, has extensive experience as a clergyman and conversation partner. If you need someone to talk to, consult or discuss with, he is available for a chat. His office is located in the basement of the Clock Building on the left hand side. Next to his office you will find a quiet room open for all students. This room can be used by all students wanting to pray, meditate or just need of a moment of silence. The Universitychaplain at NMBU has three main tasks: 1) Highlight that all students are entitled to freedom of religion and belief. The student chaplain is available for students of all faiths and beliefs, including Muslims, Buddhists, Hunduists, Agnostics and Atheists. 2) Be a conversation partner for anyone who needs somebody to talk with. With the student chaplain you can talk about anything from exams, studies, death and sorrow, to love, faith and finding your own way in life. The chaplain is bound by a confidentiality agreement. 3) Religious duties and church services. The last Thursday of the month, the student chaplain welcomes all to an open Church service in Ă…s kirke. At times he also participates in the meetings of the Christian Student Society at Samfunnet. It is not always easy to talk with friends or family members, and you may need an experienced person who can provide a different perspective. You are welcome to stop by for a chat!
