The Tuntreet staff

Today, the staff of Tuntreet consists of 39 contracted members, including heads of committees and editors. We also have a decent group of freelancers. Tuntreet’s staff are journalists, photographers, proofreaders, translators, layout workers, illustrators, and distributors. Recently, we have also started looking into the creation of a committee position as editorial secretary, who can help out with the administrative part of the student newspaper.

Those with positions of responsibility in Tuntreet for autumn 2022 are:

Editor-in-chief: Sofie Bergset Janols Managing editor: Synne Louise Stromme Head of photography: Margreta Brunborg Head of layout: Sara Thu Head of translation: Julie Hauge Blindheim Head of proofreading: Andrine Stengrundet

Editions

In 2022, the number of printed editions has been 800 Norwegian and 200 English issues. Previously, not all of these have been picked up at campus, and we’ve had to get rid of some. To combat this issue, we have focused on improving our distribution. We invested in more magazine stands during the spring period, and these arrived in time for TT05. Currently, we have magazine stands in most places on campus where there are students, in addition to Ås kvartal. We also conducted a reader´s survey last spring and have used the feedback from this.

This autumn, the editions have more or less disappeared from the magazine stands, which is super fun. We consider this a sign that both the distribution and the editions in themselves are functioning well. Because of this, we tried out increasing the number of printed editions for TT07 and TT08 to 850 Norwegian and 250 English issues. However, due to the high printing costs, we have had to go back on this.

Finances

Printing costs are Tuntreet´s largest expense. These have gone up a lot in 2021 and 2022, as the price of paper has seen a significant increase. We have good contact with our printing company, who believes the prices are starting to stabilize. Still, this budget post needs a lot more than before, and we have to get creative in order to reach the goal of Tuntreet breaking even.

A big part of Tuntreet´s income comes through financial support from NMBU. This financial support has increased a bit in 2022, but not enough to cover the increased printing costs. Apart from that, we have had a good collaboration with NU´s sponsor team, who are making sure that Tuntreet gets advertisements. For 2023, we are budgeting for getting more ads than we have had in 2022. In addition, we are looking into and applying for more external financial support.

We have also been a bit stricter with the rest of our budget to slash some expenses, but our license costs are still budgeted as a significant expense. This is because we did not have the time to get licenses through TechSoup before last year´s licences expired. If Samfunnet has good experience with the TechSoup solution, it is likely that Tuntreet move on to this next autumn.

Web and social media

All of Tuntreet´s editions can be found online at https://issuu.com/tuntreet . On our web page, https://tuntreet.org/ , we post a selection of articles in English and Norwegian. We also have a debate page there, where we post letter-to-the editor as we receive them.

As usual, we are working on becoming more present on social media. This spring, we were not where we wanted to be in terms of presence on Instagram, but this autumn, the Tuntreet Instagram has come back to life. We have also conducted quite a few surveys shared on Facebook, but we´re experiencing that there are fewer respondents than earlier.

Thanks

I would like to thank the staff of Tuntret for all the work they have put into this year´s (and previous) editions. This is a really talented, not to mention, fun, group of people. My committee heads also deserve a thank-you for making the editors’ work that much easier, by helping out with the organisation, sharing knowledge and spreading good vibes. This goes for the people in Kontorfløya as well.

In the end, I want to thank my co-editors, Simen and Synne, for good cooperation, and for many good times together inside and outside of the office. I wish Synne good luck as the new editor-in-chief, and I also want to wish the new managing editor the best of luck in the position (with a great faith that this will work out really well).
