AN N IV ER SA RY
New Zealand
Back in 1997 Samen NZ LTD was established in partnership with Bas Engelen, founder of K.I. Samen in the Netherlands. Initially we only marketed semen from Holstein Friesian bulls from the Netherlands but since 2001 to date we are also joined by 12 international companies.
Since Bas Engelen passed away in September 2018, we have worked with his estate on a take-over of the company shares which was completed in August 2021. Samen NZ is now firmly established as New Zealand’s 2nd largest “New Zealand owned and operated” genetics company.
Amongst these companies are some of the world’s largest genetics companies and co-ops, giving us access to the largest genetics pool of any company operational in New Zealand.
We are very proud of what we have achieved and most grateful to all our clients, international partners, and staff, current and in the past. Together with our team of loyal and dedicated staff we look forward to welcome and be of assistance to all New Zealand farmers.
This large variety of genetics enables us to select for new international trends and benefit from the R&D invested in these companies. Through this large network, Samen NZ LTD has become a leader in introducing new trends. Samen NZ was the first to have an entire catalogue selection made up of A2A2 bulls, we have successfully introduced double muscle dairy beef with short gestation and calving ease. We are now making great headway with the introduction of the largest available selection of bulls carrying the Polled Gene. Through our international partners we have also introduced two of the world’s most successful and best proven “three-way cross” breeding programs. Samen NZ will continue to focus on supplying and investing in genetics to future proof New Zealand farmer’s business. The Future of efficiency through functionality, profitability, and sustainability. The introduction of NZI index will be an important tool for farmers to achieve that high level of efficiency.

New Zealand Index (NZI) explained Liveweight
Somatic Cell
Farmers are looking for a medium-size cow and don’t want to see a further slide in cow weight as this increases per cow costs and thus doesn’t increase overall farm efficiency.
Somatic cell is on the rise in the sires represented on the RAS List. NZI has more than double the penalty to ensure genetic gain rather than decline in this area.
There is also consideration about the beef value of surplus calves produced from the dairy industry. Maintaining liveweight of the national herd and increasing per cow production better suits these industry pressures.
Udder Overall
Under the current weighting the liveweight of the national herd will decrease each generation this would result in the production of increasing numbers of calves with even lower beef value. Halving the liveweight penalty would see future generation remain of similar size to the current population while continuing to increase production per cow.
Body Condition
Litres Penalty
These traits are weighted the same as the national economic weightings.
Fonterra are dropping the capacity charge and the peak volume charges this mean the direct economic cost of extra litres is only the volume adjustment of 2.9 cents per litre this equates to less than 1/3 of the economic value in the BW. A litres penalty is still important part of breeding an efficient cow but decreasing the penalty better represents the true cost.
Fertility
Currently fertility is weighted at a rate that shows a continual genetic slide for fertility in sires represented on the RAS list. In order to avoid further decrease in fertility the weighting has been increased in the NZI.
As a direct trait, Udder Overall has been added to allow direct selection on this trait rather than being part of residual survival.
The economic cost used in the BW formula assumes cows are light at the end of lactation and require extra feed before calving. This has been reduced for the NZI as some of the implications body-condition have been accounted for already in fertility.

New Zealand Index The NZI is based on Farmer feedback on the economic values aiming to better represent the true cost on farm, but also ensuring traits have sufficient weighting to prevent a genetic slide in farmers key areas of concern.
Breeding For The Future Throughout this catalogue you will find a series of colour coded circles attached to individual sires. In the simplest of terms these indicate the characteristics and qualities that bull is going to bring to mating. The Samen Colour Code Selection Programme provides a constant revision of your breeding strategy and a focus on breeding each and every generation to it’s future enviroment, as well as the capability of meeting future increases in production objectives. If and when you decide to investigate “what could be” then we have the structure and the genetics to help you take the next step. In addition we also offer Colour Code training to ensure you and your staff are equipped with the tools and skills required to focus on future herd development.
A bull with strength and width. Body capacity and ROUND qualities.
A bull that will bring dairy quality and angularity, or SHARP qualities.
A bull that is easy calving and suitable for use over smaller cows and two year olds.
Yellow is allocated only to Jersey Bulls and indicates its suitability for use on larger frame Holstein cows for cross breeding.

Samen NZ distributes both on farm as well as to other AI Companies throughout NZ. If you wish to use another breeding company technician, we can despatch your order to their main distribution centres for the semen to be placed in your technician’s bank. Samen NZ does not charge a handling fee for semen received from other New Zealand based AI companies when that is to be added to your order. Our standard handling fee will however apply. The standard despatch and handling fee is $60.00 per on farm consignment. For orders shipped to other AI companies our handling fee is only $30.00. Other company handling fees may apply.
