COHABITATION COMPREHENSIVE STUDIO PROJECT, 2017 Site: VANCOUVER SEA ISLAND, BC Done in collaboration with Jason Surkan Vancouver Sea Island is of great ecological importance, both aquatic and terrestrial. The site sits along the Fraser River, British Columbia’s longest river. This river is home to some of the worlds largest salmon runs and populations of giant white sturgeon and is a nesting and resting area for migratory birds as it is adjacent to the Pacific Flyway. The proposed project is a small component of a larger network of natural systems. Program: Floatplane terminal & Restaurant (on the river), Hangar & Event Space (in the dike), and Hotel & Spa (on the dike).

BOOMTOWNS STUDIO PROJECT, 2016
Site: HUDSON’S HOPE, BC How can housing be the foundation to a post-boom future? The quaint town of Hudson’s Hope in British Columbia could be the next location hit by an oil boom-bust cycle. During an oil boom, a large influx of workers migrate to the remote town for work. Since not enough housing and hotels are available for the workers, illegal trailer parks are erected to compensate. As a result, housing becomes a prominent issue for the community as those living on illegal trailer parks are not paying taxes, yet still use the community’s resources such as waste removal, sewage, and potable water. Clearly, more housing needs to be provided for the transient workers, but, what will happen to the housing units when the oil boom inevitably bust? My proposal is to transorm the worker housing into community housing unit with greenhouse/community garden space. Greenhouse space is needed in this community as fresh produce is difficult to obtain in such a remote location. Therefore, the building that would be built for the oil boom can be retrofit, post-boom, to benefit the community. Program: Housing units and indoor farming/garden space.

STREETSCAPE STUDIO PROJECT, 2017
Site: 61 & 95 WEST HASTINGS ST, VANCOUVER, BC Done in collaboration with Leah Porter & Ali Somer Set in the trendy neighbourhood of Gastown, in Vancouver, the iconic Woodwards complex attempts to create a sense of street life with an atrium with outdoor language. We wanted to build off of this concept by creating a lively streetscape by encouraging interaction, people watching and, creativity. Our intervention is inspired by street life. That is why on the ground level our building is setback on all four sides with each side functions as a street front. The floors above are residential. The demographic that we are targeting are the typically young workers and students who are already sacrificing their privacy in their living situation by taking on multiple roommates to reduce rental expenses. This usually involves bunk beds, someone taking over the living room, or dividing up the dining room. We designed units with shared space in mind, replacing the living room space with a bedroom and transforming the living space into a communal environment, which provide opportunities to get to know other inhabitants, as well as provide space for amenities that can’t normally fit into a standard living room. Program: Housing units with communal common space, commercial space on ground floor, public atrium space.

COUNTDOWN TO BLASTOFF THESIS PROJECT, 2018
Site: VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, VANCOUVER, BC Space travel and space tourism are rapidly advancing increasing the potential for multi-planetary life. This thesis envisions a future where space travel is an accessible mode of transportation and space tourism is common for people throughout the globe. It seeks to explore the implementation of a spaceport in Vancouver as a means to technological and human advancement by establishing an architectural framework which can facilitate this new mode of transportation. This thesis investigates the following: What does it mean for a traveller to be launched into space? What facilitates this new type of travel? How will the spaceport address the emotional, physical, and societal concerns of space flight? Program for travellers: Spaceport, traveller sleep units, biodome, astronaut suiting area, commercial spaces, lobby, observation ramp, museum.

Spaceports are a relatively new type of building in the real world, but one that has been explored in film. Thinking about these ambiguous spaces in terms of set design, camera angles, lighting, mood, etc. helps ground this relatively new type of building and travel in something familiar. Making space flight more commonplace for the everyman and everywoman occupying the space. How will each of the occupants move through the space? How will they feel? What memories are they making? The design aims to answer these questions cinematically. COUNTDOWN TO BLASTOFF

I am currently completing my final year of the Master of Architecture program at the University of British Columbia. My undergraduate degree was completed at the University of Western Ontario, where I received a major in Visual Arts and a minor in Biology. To me, architecture is a lens through which the world can be experienced. My career aspiration is to create sustainable designs that will enhance the nature of the city and the lives of those within. I seek to combine my interest in art, design, human biology, and architecture to produce compelling architectural forms and spaces where people can thrive.
