Vancouver Sea Island is of great ecological importance, both aquatic and terrestrial. The site sits along the Fraser River, British Columbia’s longest river. This river is home to some of the worlds largest salmon runs and populations of giant white sturgeon and is a nesting and resting area for migratory birds as it is adjacent to the Pacific Flyway. The proposed project is a small component of a larger network of natural systems.
Program: Floatplane terminal & Restaurant (on the river), Hangar & Event Space (in the dike), and Hotel & Spa (on the dike).

STUDIO PROJECT, 2017
Site: 61 & 95 WEST HASTINGS ST, VANCOUVER, BC
Done in collaboration with Leah Porter & Ali Somer
Set in the trendy neighbourhood of Gastown, in Vancouver, the adjacent Woodwards complex attempts to create a sense of street life with an indoor/outdoor plaza. The goal of this project is to expand on the concept by creating a lively streetscape by encouraging interaction, people watching and, creativity. The ground level of the building is setback on all four sides to create a loggia, with each side of the building functioning as a street front to prioritize pedestrian experience. The floors above are residential, targeting young workers and students who are already sacrificing privacy to reduce rental expenses amidst Vancouver’s housing crisis. For these young adults, housing in Vancouver typically involves bunk beds, someone taking over the living room, or dividing up the dining room. By eliminating living rooms and dining rooms in a suite and amalgamating it into a large communal environment for multiple units to share, this provides an opportunity to meet other residences, create community within your building, as well as provide space for amenities that normally do not fit into a standard living room.

Site: VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, VANCOUVER, BC
Space travel and space tourism are rapidly advancing increasing the potential for multi-planetary life. This thesis envisions a future where space travel is an accessible mode of transportation and space tourism is common for people throughout the globe. It seeks to explore the implementation of a spaceport in Vancouver as a means to technological and human advancement by establishing an architectural framework which can facilitate this new mode of transportation.
This thesis investigates the following: What does it mean for a traveller to be launched into space?
What facilitates this new type of travel? How will the spaceport address the emotional, physical, and societal concerns of space flight?
Program for travellers: Spaceport, traveller sleep units, biodome, astronaut suiting area, commercial spaces, lobby, observation ramp, museum.

Spaceports are a relatively new type of building in the real world, but one that has been explored in film. Thinking about these ambiguous spaces in terms of set design, camera angles, lighting, mood, etc. helps ground this relatively new type of building and travel in something familiar. Making space flight more commonplace for the everyman and everywoman occupying the space. How will each of the occupants move through the space? How will they feel? What memories are they making? The design aims to answer these questions cinematically.
