Aπό τη στιγμή που θα συνδυάσεις μια LV τσάντα με το ρούχο σου, γίνεσαι αμέσως LV γυναίκα», έχει πει ο Marc Jacobs, ένας από τους πιο πρωτοποριακούς –εν ζωή– σχεδιαστές, ο οποίος, όχι τυχαία, βρίσκεται στο τιμόνι του μεγάλου οίκου από το 1997. Η ιστορία, όμως, ξεκινά το 1854, όταν ο Γάλλος σχεδιαστής ειδών ταξιδιού Louis Vuitton ξεκίνησε να πουλά πολυτελή είδη ταξιδιού και γρήγορα έγινε ο αγαπημένος προμηθευτής των ανακτόρων και της βασιλικής οικογένειας. Τα δυο μαγικά αρχικά επάνω σε κάθε προϊόν –ρούχα, παπούτσια, αξεσουάρ– αποτελούν τη σφραγίδα της απόλυτης πολυτέλειας και την εγγύηση της απαράμιλλης ποιότητας. Ο οίκος, ειδικά μετά τη συνεργασία του με τον Marc Jacobs, απογείωσε την επικοινωνία του με τις καινούργιες γενιές και ανανέωσε ριζικά το προφίλ του. Ονόματα καλλιτεχνών, όπως ο Takashi Murakami ή η Rei Kuwakubo, σχεδιάστρια του Comme des Garçons, κατέθεσαν το ταλέντο τους στις υπηρεσίες της τέλειας τσάντας και το αποτέλεσμα ήταν –και είναι– εκπληκτικό! Για τη νέα Resort συλλογή 2012 μία γυναίκα με έμφυτη κομψότητα, η Sophia Coppola, έχει συνεργαστεί με την Julie de Libran, Design Director του οίκου. Έτσι, τον περασμένο Οκτώβριο, στο Cour Carrée του Λούβρου στήθηκε ένα εντυπωσιακό carousel για να παρουσιαστεί στο κοινό η νέα συλλογή του οίκου Louis Vuitton για την σεζόν άνοιξη - καλοκαίρι 2012. Η συλλογή, όπως και η εκδήλωση, ήταν φαντασμαγορική με κορυφαία στιγμή την εμφάνιση της Kate Moss να φορά μία κατάλευκη παραμυθένια δημιουργία...

μέρες χειμώνα στην Αθήνα... Σε μία Αθήνα που μοιάζει να έχει αλλάξει πρόσωπο, αφήνοντας πίσω της την εποχή της ευκολίας, σε μία πρωτεύουσα που αναζητεί το βηματισμό της στις νέες συνθήκες, που έχουν διαχυθεί οριζόντια όχι μόνο στην Ευρώπη, αλλά και τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο. Έχοντας ακαταμάχητη εμπιστοσύνη στο ανεξάντλητο δυναμικό της Ελλάδας, είμαι βέβαιος πως αυτός ο τόπος θα βγει πολύ πιο δυνατός από την υφιστάμενη περιδίνηση. Όμως, για να συμβεί αυτό, απαιτούνται γενναίες αποφάσεις που δεν αφορούν μόνο την κορυφή, αλλά συνολικά όλη την κλίμακα της κοινωνικής ιεραρχίας. Εμείς οι άνθρωποι του Hilton Αθηνών, συναισθανόμενοι την αλλαγή των συνθηκών, προχωρήσαμε τόσο στην αναβάθμιση των υπηρεσιών που παρέχουμε όσο και στην εναρμόνιση των τιμών με το πνεύμα της νέας εποχής. Που σημαίνει: με άλλα τόσα την ξαναφτιάχνεις».

Wintertime in Athens ... In a city that seems to have changed, leaving behind the days of ease, in a capital that searches to find its pace within the new conditions that have spread across not only Europe, but across the rest of the world as well. Having overwhelming trust in the inexhaustible labour force of Greece, I am certain that this land will arise much stronger out of the current turbulent times. However, in order for something like this to happen, brave decisions have to be made that have to do not only with the top echelons, but with all social scale levels. Ourselves, the people of Hilton Athens, aware of the change in the surrounding circumstances, we move ahead with upgrading our level of services, as well as with the harmonization of prices in the spirit of the new era. A few examples of our foodservice approach: the Aethrion Lounge – where, apart from enjoying the delicious suggestions by the executive chef Yannis Manikis for breakfast or a quick lunch during the day, you may also purchase selected products of unique taste from the Greek countryside – and the Byzantino, where “value for money” finds its literal application. Still, we do not stop just yet ... Ζωή Κεραμέα, διακεκριμένη «πρέσβειρα» της εικόνας, έχει αφήσει ισχυρό το αποτύπωμά της στη σύγχρονη τέχνη, ερευνώντας, με ένα απόλυτα προσωπικό στυλ, αναδιπλούμενες επιφάνειες στη γλυπτική, τη χαρακτική, το σχέδιο και την κεραμική. Από το τέλος Ιανουαρίου μάς καλεί στο δημιουργικό κόσμο της, με αφορμή τα έργα που εκθέτει στο Lobby και το Aethrion Lounge του Hilton Αθηνών. Πρόκειται για γλυπτικές συνθέσεις από χαρτί προσαρμοσμένες στο χώρο και τον κόσμο του Hilton, καθώς και επιτοίχια έργα, τα οποία εκτείνονται νοητά πέρα από τα όρια του χώρου και του χρόνου.

Zoe Keramea, a renowned “AMBASSADOR” of images, has made an impact on contemporary art, discovering through her own personal style folded surfaces into sculpture, printmaking, drawing and ceramic art. Starting late January, she is inviting us into her creative world, with the occasion of her impressive artworks that will be exhibited at the Lobby and the Aethrion Lounge of the Hilton Athens. These artworks are sculptural structures made of paper adapted to the space and the world of Hilton Athens, as well as works on the walls, extending into the imagination beyond the boundaries of space and time.

Η ΤΕΧΝΗ, ΑΝΤΙΘΕΤΑ ΜΕ ΤΗ ΖΩΗ, αγαπά την υπέρβαση, και αυτό το αντιλαμβάνεσαι, όταν εισέρχεσαι στο εργαστήριο της Ζωής Κεραμέα στο Παλαιό Φάληρο! Η ίδια –εγκάρδια, προσιτή, με χειμαρρώδη λόγο– δεν εξαντλείται εύκολα, καθώς μιλά για την εργατικότητα, την έμπνευση, το μεράκι και την αγάπη της για την τέχνη. Όσοι τη ρωτούν για το αν είναι εύκολο ένας Έλληνας εικαστικός να ξεχωρίσει σε μία ξένη χώρα, υπονοώντας τη δική της επιτυχημένη διαδρομή, απαντά: «Ευχαριστώ που το βλέπετε έτσι». Σπούδασε Καλές Τέχνες στο Βερολίνο και ειδικεύτηκε σε όλες τις τεχνικές της χαρακτικής. Τα τελευταία χρόνια ζει και εργάζεται στη Νέα Υόρκη, όπου βρέθηκε αρχικά με υποτροφία του Ιδρύματος Fulbright για να ερευνήσει μία τεχνική της χαλκογραφίας, δικής της επινόησης, που στις ΗΠΑ βαφτίστηκε «zoetype». Στο ατελιέ της βλέπουμε φωτογραφίες έργων της από την ατομική της έκθεση, που πρόσφατα έγινε σε γκαλερί της Νέας Υόρκης με τίτλο «Αιχμηρά»· τα έργα της δείχνουν σαν η γνωστή εικαστικός να έχει δαμάσει τους συμβατικούς κανόνες των μορφών και της κατασκευής. Αν και το βασικό υλικό στα έργα της είναι το χαρτί, δεν διστάζει να χρησιμοποιήσει και άλλα ασυνήθιστα υλικά. Στο λιμάνι της Νέας Υόρκης, μεγάλη επιτυχία γνώρισε το έργο της «Δαχτυλιδόκομπος - Μία Γραμμή που Πλέκεται», που έγινε στο πλαίσιο ενός φεστιβάλ με τη συμμετοχή του κοινού, χρησιμοποιώντας εκατό μέτρα καραβόσκοινο. Το σκοινί πλέκεται για να σχηματίσει έναν τέλειο κύκλο. «Επί τρείς ολόκληρους μήνες προετοίμαζα αυτό το έργο που στην αρχή έμοιαζε δύσκολο,

ART, UNLIKE LIFE, loves to cross the limits, and one can grasp that instantly when entering Zoe Keramea’s workshop in Paleo Faliro: a field full of tension and promises! The artist herself is friendly, smiling and eloquent; she is tireless, talking about working hard, inspiration, the love of work and art. Those who happen to ask her if it is easy to be a Greek visual artist distinguished for her work abroad, referencing her successful career, she answers modestly: “Thank you for seeing it in that way.” The renowned visual artist studied Fine Arts in Berlin and specialized in all the techniques of printmaking. During recent years, she has been living and working in New York, where she first went when she was awarded a Fulbright Grant for research on a printmaking technique of her own invention, which in the USA was named “zoetype”. In her studio, we see photographs of artworks from her one-person exhibition that was recently held in New York, entitled “Spiky”; what you see in her art is that the artist has tamed the conventional rules of shapes and construction. Even if paper is the main material she chooses for her art, she is not afraid to use other, more unusual materials too. In New York’s South Street Seaport, her artwork “Ringknot - A Woven Line” met huge success; it was held within the frame of a festival and required the public’s participation with the use of a hundred metres of nautical rope. The rope was woven into a perfect circle, with a diameter of almost eight metres. “I was preparing the artwork for three months and, in the

σχεδόν ανέφικτο, για να πραγματοποιηθεί μέσα σε μία μέρα! Περισσότεροι από χίλιοι διακόσιοι άνθρωποι συμμετείχαν στην κατασκευή του. Υπάρχει αρκετό φωτογραφικό και κινηματογραφικό υλικό που τεκμηριώνει το συμβάν, και μου έχει ζητηθεί να κάνω ένα παρόμοιο έργο και στην Ελλάδα. Όμως, θα προτιμούσα να κάνω κάτι καινούργιο, πάλι με τη συμμετοχή του κόσμου.»

ΤΑ ΕΡΓΑ ΤΗΣ –ΑΕΙΚΙΝΗΤΑ, ΝΕΥΡΙΚΑ ΚΑΙ ανήσυχα– είναι ένας συνδυασμός από τολμηρές, έντονες επιφάνειες, οι οποίες συχνά δημιουργούν την ψευδαίσθηση του τρισδιάστατου στο δισδιάστατο χώρο του χαρτιού. Άλλοτε δισδιάστατες λωρίδες χαρτιού αναδιπλώνονται σε πολυεδρικές δομικές μονάδες που ράβονται μεταξύ τους για να σχηματίσουν περίπλοκα γλυπτά. Η υλοποίησή τους, που αρχικά μοιάζει ανέφικτη, πραγματοποιείται ύστερα από πολύ κόπο και υπομονή. «Οι δυσκολίες στην υλοποίηση ενός έργου είναι πάντα μία ωραία πρόκληση για μένα. Πολλές φορές, ο χώρος για τον οποίο προορίζεται μία εγκατάσταση ή ένα γλυπτικό έργο οροθετεί και το έργο, του αλλάζει τη μορφή, μπορεί να προκαλέσει τη δημιουργία ενός διαφορετικού έργου.» Παρατηρώ ότι η γραφή της απλώνεται σε ασταμάτητη κίνηση, ρευστή και σχεδόν ιερογλυφική, συμπυκνώνοντας τη μέγιστη πληροφορία στην ελάχιστη έκταση. Ο έρωτας, ο κοινωνικός ακτιβισμός, οι υπο-κουλτούρες του δρόμου, η θρησκεία, τα υπαρξιακά ερωτήματα, όλα σχολιάζονται στη χειρονομιακή γραφή και τις αναγνωρίσιμες γεωμετρικές κατασκευές της. Η ψηφιακή έκδοση του παιχνιδιού της «Mandala Memory» για το iPhone και το iPod, που περιέχει πενήντα τέσσερα χαρτοκοπτικά της σχέδια, έχει στόχο οι παίκτες όλων των ηλικιών να εξασκήσουν την παρατηρητικότητά τους και την οπτική τους μνήμη παίζοντας και προσπαθώντας να ξεχωρίσουν τα ζευγάρια. Πρόκειται για ένα παιχνίδι μνήμης, στο οποίο τα μοτίβα εμπλέκονται μεταξύ τους αναδεικνύοντας μέσα από δημιουργικές διαφορές και επαναλαμβανόμενα μοτίβα ένα σύμπαν ακαταμάχητο, που όσο πιο πολύ το βιώνεις τόσο περισσότερο χάνεσαι μέσα του.

HER ARTWORKS – RESTLESS, NERVOUS AND a combination of bold, intense surfaces, often create a three-dimensional illusion out of the two-dimensional space of the paper. Then again, two dimensional stripes of paper are folded into multiple-surfaced structures sewn together to create intricate sculptures. Their completion, which in the beginning seems impossible, is carried out with intense effort and a lot of patient work. “The difficulties in the realization of an artwork are always a beautiful challenge for me. A lot of times, the space where an installation or a sculpture is designated to be placed sets the limits of the artwork itself, changes its shape and it may trigger the creation of a different artwork.” I notice that her line is stretching like a single movement with no end, liquid, almost hieroglyphic, making a concise outcome of the maximum information into the minimum space. Love, social activism, the street subcultures, religion, existential questions - all these are commented through her gesture-like drawing and her recognizable geometrical structures. The digital version of her game “Mandala Memory” for iPhone and iPod, including fifty four of her paper cut-out designs, invites all age groups to practice their observing skills and their visual memory by playing and trying to match the pairs. This is a memory game where the interlaced designs mixed with one another bring up an irresistible universe through the creative differences and the repetitive designs, and the more you experience of it, the more you are lost into it.

Παρά ταύτα, σπεύδει να υπογραμμίσει πως «η ζωή είναι ενδιαφέρουσα παντού. Όπου και να βρεθώ, με τον ίδιο ενθουσιασμό θα δουλέψω. Αν και είμαι κουκουβάγια –η επιστήμη μάς χωρίζει σε κορυδαλλούς και κουκουβάγιες–, και αυτό σημαίνει πως προτιμώ να εργάζομαι τη νύχτα, αγαπώ τόσο πολύ αυτό που κάνω, που καταλήγω να δουλεύω ασταμάτητα, μέρα και νύχτα. IN THESE TIMES OF VELOCITY AND underground crossroads, the wellknown visual artist loves living in New York, as she fits with the city’s intense pace, its streets’ vibrations, its music, its originalities, the thousand stimuli that are absorbed and expressed through her work. On the other hand, she expresses soon enough, that “life is intriguing anywhere you are. No matter where I am, I work with the same zest. Even though I am an owl – science divides us into larks and owls –, which means that I prefer to work during the night, I love so much what I do that I end up working both day and night, without stopping.

For me art is a necessity.”

Robert Mapplethorpe γεννήθηκε στις 4 Νοεμβρίου 1946 στο Floral Park, στο Queens της Νέας Υόρκης. Μεγάλωσε με τα τέσσερα αδέλφια του σε ένα καλά προστατευμένο ρωμαιοκαθολικό περιβάλλον. Το έντονο ενδιαφέρον του για τις τέχνες είχε φανεί από μικρή ηλικία, καθώς ήδη από δώδεκα ετών έπαιρνε το μετρό για το Manhattan για να παρακολουθήσει συναυλίες και εκθέσεις. Robert Mapplethorpe was born on November 4, 1946, at Floral Park, Queens County in New York. He grew up in a family of five children in a well-protected roman-catholic environment. His love for art was evident quite soon, since when he was still twelve years old he would take the subway to Manhattan in order to attend concerts and exhibitions. His talent in painting soon attracted the attention of his teachers. He studied graphic arts at the Pratt Institute at Brooklyn. However, he never finished his studies, since he dropped out of college in 1969. His influence by Joseph Cornell and Marcel Duchamp led him to collage and in experimenting with magazine pictures and other materials. In 1970, he bought his first Polaroid, and took the pictures he needed for his own collages: “I went into photography because it seemed like the perfect vehicle for commenting on the madness of today’s existence.” Polaroid soon became his only concern.

Ήταν η ζωή στην οποία και ο ίδιος συμμετείχε: «Αν είμαι σε ένα πάρτι, θέλω να συμμετέχω σε αυτό. Πολ-

HIS MUSE AND THE ONLY WOMAN IN HIS LIFE was Patti Smith. They met in 1967 and remained sexually and creatively together until 1974. They had an intense impact on one another which led to a virtual explosion of their creativity. After their break up, they stayed close friends. Mapplethorpe turned to homosexuality fully, which he suppressed up until then. Soon he had by his side his mentor and longstanding partner, the exhibition curator Sam Wagstaff. In 1973, the Light Gallery hosted his first personal exhibition with Polaroid photos. In 1975, he bought a Hasselblad and managed, in a very short period of time, to depict in such a unique way the life and the ambience of New York during the 70s. The subject of his work: his friends, artists, musicians, media personas, but also porn stars, outsiders and underground American figures, with a distinct focus on sadomasochism and dominance games in the bedroom. This was part of his own life too: “If I am at a party, I want to be at the party. Too many photographers use the camera to avoid participating in things. They become professional observers.” Everyone is amazed by his subjects, by the high

Ποτέ άλλος φωτογράφος μέχρι τότε δεν χρησιμοποίησε το μέσο για να αποτυπώσει τόσο ανελέητα το προσωπικό του όραμα, φέρνοντας δυναμικά στο προσκήνιο πτυχές της ομοφυλόφιλης κουλτούρας. Όπως ομολόγησε σε μία συνέντευξή του στο περιοδικό Artnews το 1988: «Δεν μου αρέσει η λέξη σοκαριστικό. Ψάχνω το απροσδόκητο. Ψάχνω για πράγματα που δεν έχω ξαναδεί. Ήμουν σε θέση να βγάλω εκείνες τις φωτογραφίες. Είχα την υποχρέωση να το κάνω». Παράλληλα όμως, συμμετείχε σε αρκετά εμπορικά projects, όπως εξώφυλλα δίσκων (Patti Smith, Television) και μία σειρά πορτρέτων για το περιοδικό Interview. Η φήμη και η καριέρα του εκτοξεύθηκαν. Το 1977 συμμετείχε στην έκθεση Documenta 6 στο Kassel και το 1978 η νεοϋορκέζικη γκαλερί Robert Miller απέκτησε τα αποκλειστικά δικαιώματα της διακίνησης των έργων του. Η ΔΕΚΑΕΤΙΑ ΤΟΥ ’80 ΤΟΥ ΕΠΙΦΥΛΑΞΕ ακόμη περισσότερη δόξα, αλλά και το άδοξο τέλος του. Το 1980 συνάντησε τη Lisa Lyon, την πρώτη παγκόσμια πρωταθλήτρια στο γυναικείο bodybuilding, η οποία έγινε το αγαπημένο του μοντέλο σε αρκετές ενότητες φωτογραφιών (1980-82). Με αυτήν τη σειρά έργων άρχισε η στροφή του σε πιο εκλεπτυσμένα και λιγότερο δημοφιλή θέματα: στυλιζαρισμένες συνθέσεις ανδρικών και γυναικείων γυμνών, νεκρές φύσεις με λουλούδια, στούντιο πορτρέτα καλλιτεχνών και προσωπικότητες του αμερικανικού θεάματος (Andy Warhol, Deborah Harry, Richard Gere, Peter Gabriel κ.ά.). Στη συνέχεια, εγκατέλειψε τους δρόμους και τα παράνομα καταγώγια και «κλείστηκε» στο στούντιό του στο Manhattan. Το 1986 οι γιατροί διέγνωσαν ότι νοσούσε από AIDS. Παρά την ασθένειά του, συνέχισε ακάματος να δημιουργεί. Το Whitney Museum of American Art φιλοξένησε την πρώτη του αναδρομική έκθεση το 1988. Την ίδια χρονιά ίδρυσε το Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation Inc, με κύριο στόχο την προώθηση της φωτογραφίας και τη χρηματοδότηση της ιατρικής έρευνας για τη μάχη ενάντια στο AIDS. Το έργο του παραμένει σταθμός για τη φωτογραφία του 20ού αιώνα και αυτή της τέχνης γενικότερα. Η συμβολή του στην τεχνική του πορτρέτου είναι αδιαμφισβήτητη. Τα εντυπωσιακά κοντράστ του επιτυγχάνουν να δώσουν στις μορφές του μία τρισδιάστατη πραγματικότητα. Τα γυμνά του μοιάζουν με εντυπωσιακά γλυπτά που αποπνέουν ζωή. Το έργο του μοιάζει σαν μία μάταιη και φευγαλέα καταγραφή ενός λαμπερού momentum απέναντι στη φθορά, την αρρώστια, το θάνατο. Ο ΕΙΛΙΚΡΙΝΗΣ ΟΜΟΕΡΩΤΙΣΜΟΣ ΤΩΝ ΕΡΓΩΝ ΤΟΥ, αλλά κυρίως η σκληρή σαδομαζοχιστική φύση κάποιων από αυτών, προκάλεσε το καλοκαίρι του 1989 μία σειρά από συγκρούσεις, δικαστικές διαμάχες, καθώς μερικά από τα πιο ακραία έργα του συμπεριεζλήφθησαν στην περιοδεύουσα μεταθανάτια έκθεσή του «The Perfect Moment». Η Corcoran Gallery of Art στην Washington αρνήθηκε να φιλοξενήσει την έκθεση, ύστερα από καταγγελίες ενώσεων, ενώ ο επιμελητής του Contemporary Arts Center του Cincinnati, που τη φιλοξένησε, αθωώθηκε τελικά στη δίκη που τον προσήγαγαν. Το ερώτημα του τι είναι προσβλητικό και άσεμνο στην τέχνη παραμένει διαχρονικό και είναι στενά συνδεδεμένο με το έργο του Αμερικανού δημιουργού. Up until then, there wasn’t any other photographer to use the means of his work to depict so mercilessly his personal vision, bringing into focus so vehemently the aspects of homosexual culture. As he confessed in an interview by Artnews magazine in 1988: “I don’t like that particular word ‘shocking.’ I’m looking for the unexpected. I’m looking for things I’ve never seen before … I was in a position to take those pictures. I felt an obligation to do them.” While in another interview he said: “Beauty and the devil are the same thing.” Meanwhile, however, he collaborated in several commercial projects, like album covers (Patti Smith, Television) and a series of portraits for Interview magazine. His fame and his career skyrocketed. In 1977, he took part in the exhibition Documenta 6 at Kassel and in 1978 the Robert Miller Gallery in New York became his exclusive dealer.

DURING THE 80s HE GAINED even more glory than before, but that was also when his life came to an abrupt unfortunate end. In 1980, he met Lisa Lyon, the first World Women’s Bodybuilding Champion, who became his favourite model in a variety of photography pieces (1980-82). This is considered to be his most complete work. With this series of projects he turned to more specialized and less popular subjects: stylized compositions of male and female nudes, flower still lifes, studio portraits of American showbiz artists and celebrities (Andy Warhol, Deborah Harry, Richard Gere, Peter Gabriel etc.). Then, he abandoned the street life and the dodgy hangouts and “isolated” in his studio in Manhattan. In 1986, he was diagnosed with AIDS. Despite his illness, he accelerated his creative efforts. The Whitney Museum of American Art hosted his first retrospective exhibition in 1988. The same year, the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation Inc was founded with the aim to promote photography and fund medical research in the fight against AIDS. His work is still a landmark of 20th century photography and of photography in general. His contribution to the portrait technique is irrefutable. His skill transforms the almost documentary-like scenery he freezes in time with his camera into unique moments of artistic ecstasy. His impressive contrasts transcend the figures into a three dimensional reality. His nudes look like extraordinary lifelike sculptures. Their dynamic is unmatched, avoiding the glittering, spicy approach on human flesh.

His work resembles a vain and fleeting record of a shining momentum against spoilage, sickness and death. While, in the meantime, it is an experience, it includes the essence of being and poses questions that have to do with identity, gender and multiple roles, within the frame of the tension of social stratification.

It is still provocative, the landmark of an era and an incessant cause for scandal.

HIS WORK’S HONEST HOMOEROTISM and mainly the cruel sadomasochistic nature of a part of it, caused, in the summer of 1989, a series of conflicts and legal disputes when an ensemble of his most extreme pieces were included in the travelling posthumous exhibition “The Perfect Moment”. The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington denied hosting the exhibition, following the complaints filed by certain unions, while the curator of the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, where it was hosted, was later acquitted in trial. The question of what is offensive and indecent in art is a timeless one and is closely linked to the work of the American artist. In his own words: “I just hope I can live long enough to see the fame.” He died in the age of just fourty-two years old, on March 9, 1989 by AIDS related diseases, having tasted life and success.

συλλογή της Πινακοθήκης Manege αποτελεί ένα ξεχωριστό εκθεσιακό σύνολο, πραγματικό κόσμημα για τη Ρωσία. Εκτίθεται στην κεντρική αίθουσα του δήμου της Αγίας Πετρούπολης και αντανακλά την ιστορία της εικαστικής τέχνης της πόλης Πετρογκράντ (1914-1924), Λένινγκραντ (1924-1991), Αγία Πετρούπολη (1991). Περιλαμβάνει ένα ενδιαφέρον σύνολο έργων που αντανακλούν την πολύπλευρη και ποικιλότροπη ιστορία της εξέλιξης των εικαστικών τεχνών, από τη δεκαετία του 1920 έως τις αρχές του 21ου αιώνα: από τη Ρωσική Πρωτοπορία στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα, στο Σοσιαλιστικό Ρεαλισμό· από τις «αριστερές» διακλαδώσεις της σοβιετικής τέχνης, στο underground· από τα καλλιτεχνικά φαινόμενα της περιόδου της περεστρόικα και της μεταπερεστρόικα, στις εικαστικές προτάσεις των ημερών μας. The Manege Gallery collection is a unique ensemble for an art exhibition, one of Russia’s true treasures. It is exhibited in the Central Exhibition Hall of the municipality of Saint Petersburg and reflects the artistic history of the city of Petrograd (1914-1924), Leningrad (1924-1991), Saint Petersburg (1991).

It consists of an intriguing ensemble of artworks that reflect the multiple sides and the variety of the events that marked the evolution of artistic production, from the 1920s till the early 21st century: from the Russian Avant-Garde in the beginning of the 20th century to the Socialist Realism; from the “left-winged” branches of the soviet art to the underground; from the artistic expressions of the Perestroika and the post-Perestroika to the contemporary artistic approaches. The most interesting element is that the artworks have been created by successive generations of local artists-citizens of Saint Petersburg, an important centre of creativity for several decades.

Ήδη από τις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα, η πόλη κατάφερε να γίνει το σημαντικότερο εργοτάξιο ιδεών, τάσεων και καλλιτεχνικών ρευμάτων σε ολόκληρη τη Ρωσία και αποτέλεσε τη μήτρα, μέσα από την οποία γεννήθηκε η περίφημη Ρωσική Πρωτοπορία. Η Marina Jigarhanyan, διευθύντρια του Τμήματος Σύγχρονης Τέχνης της Κεντρικής Εκθεσιακής Αίθουσας Manege, επισημαίνει: «Στα εγχειρίδια της ιστορίας της τέχνης είναι πολύ συχνές οι αναφορές στην ανταγωνιστική αντιπαράθεση των καλλιτεχνικών αναζητήσεων μεταξύ της Ρωσικής Πρωτοπορίας και των παραδοσιακών τεχνοτροπιών. Όμως, στην πραγματικότητα η σύγκρουση των ιδεών στο καλλιτεχνικό μέτωπο ήταν πολύ πιο περίπλοκη. Πίσω από το γενικό πολιτιστικό κίνημα των “αριστερών” παλλόταν η δυναμική δημιουργική δραστηριότητα εκείνων των καλλιτεχνών, οι οποίοι δεν πρόδωσαν τους εαυτούς τους παρασυρόμενοι από τον πυρετό της καινοτομίας. Μετά τις οκτωβριανές ριζικές αλλαγές το περιεχόμενο της τέχνης τους απέκτησε νέο κοινωνικό πάθος. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the city had managed to become the most important “brewery” of ideas, trends and artistic movements in the whole of Russia and the birthplace of the famous Russian Avant-Garde.

How is the artistic scenery formulating in Russia these days and which is the relation between tradition and the vanguard brought by the new socio-economic circumstances? Marina Jigarhanyan, the director of the Department of Modern Art of the Manege Central Exhibition Hall, has the following remarks on the subject: “In the textbooks of the history of art we frequently come across the competitiveness of the artistic quests of the Russian Avant-Garde and of the traditional artistic styles. However, in fact, the clash of ideas in the artistic front was much more complex. Behind the general cultural movement of the “leftwinged” you could find the dynamic creativity of those artists, who did not betray themselves carried away by the frenzy of innovation. Following the radical changes of the Russian Revolution, artistic focus gained a new social passion.

Meanwhile, the artists expressed the modern “contemporary style” through

Τα μέλη του «Κύκλου» ενσάρκωσαν στα έργα τους την ατμόσφαιρα των κοινωνικών αλλαγών και των αναζητήσεων για ανανέωση της ζωής, ταυτόχρονα όμως η τέχνη τους πάντα συνδύαζε την ιδιόμορφη πολιτιστική ταυτότητα της πόλης τους με το διακριτικό χαρακτήρα και την κλασική κοσμιότητα της έκφρασης. Οι κοινές στυλιστικές προτιμήσεις τους, καθώς και η εικαστική τους αντίληψη για την επικαιρότητα, βρήκαν σαφή τρόπο έκφρασης μέσα από την τοπιογραφία, δημιουργώντας με εκπληκτική ακρίβεια και βαθύ ψυχολογικό ύφος τα λυρικά «πορτρέτα» της πόλης τους. Η πνευματική ατμόσφαιρα της περιόδου 1920-1940 επηρέασε καθοριστικά την περαιτέρω ανάπτυξη της ρωσικής τέχνης. Αποτέλεσε πηγή έμπνευσης για τους καλλιτέχνες όλων των μεταγενέστερων γενεών: για εκείνους που προσπαθούσαν να αντισταθούν στην ψεύτικη ρητορική της σοβιετικής τέχνης με τη δημιουργία καλλιτεχνικών ομάδων «αριστερής» κατεύθυνσης, ένα είδος underground μορφής της ζωής, αλλά και για εκείνους που, λόγω χαρακτήρα, δεν ήταν πλασμένοι για ιδεολογικούς αγώνες και εκδήλωναν την πίστη τους στις ηθικές αξίες μέσα από το σεμνό και επίμονο έργο τους ως επαγγελματίες.

These artists belonged to a renowned group of artists, the “Circle of Artists” which, during that period of time, attracted Leningrad’s most talented youth, like Vyacheslav Pakulin, Alexander Rusakov, Lidia Timoshenko, Alexei Pakhomov, David Zagoskin, Israil Lvovitch Lizak and many more. The members of the “Circle” inserted into their work the ambiance of the social changes and of the quests for a new way of life, while, simultaneously, their art always combined the specific cultural identity of their city with the subtle characteristics and the classical modesty of expression. Their common stylistic preferences, as well as their artistic perception of current events, found a lucid way of expression, mostly through landscape paintings, creating with incredible detail and deep psychological approach the lyrical “portraits” of their own city. The intellectual ambiance of the period of 1920-1940 influenced profoundly the further development of Russian art. It became the source of inspiration for the artists of all future generations: for those who were trying to resist the false rhetoric of the soviet art with the creation of artistic groups of “left-winged” approach, an underground way of life, but also for those who, due to their own character, were not fit for struggles of ideology and expressed their faith in moral values through their modest and persistent professional work.

Μία δεύτερη σημαντική περίοδος που αποτυπώνεται στη συλλογή είναι η τριετής πολιορκία της πόλης από τα ναζιστικά στρατεύματα, στο Β΄ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο (1941-44). Πολλοί από τους καλλιτέχνες που δεν κατάφεραν να φύγουν, συνέχισαν να εργάζονται, υπό αντιξοότατες συνθήκες, εκπληρώνοντας το χρέος τους ως πολίτες και δημιουργοί. Δυστυχώς, πολλοί από αυτούς χάθηκαν εξαιτίας της πείνας και της εξάντλησης. Στην έκθεση, που διοργανώνεται στο Ίδρυμα Θεοχαράκη, πρόκειται να παρουσιαστούν ελαιογραφίες, ακουαρέλες και σχέδια που καλύπτουν ένα ευρύ φάσμα θεμάτων και τεχνοτροπιών. A second important period depicted in the collection is the threeyear siege of the city by the Nazi troops, during World War II (1941-44). A lot of the artists didn’t manage to escape and continued to work under the most adverse circumstances, fulfilling their debt as citizens and creative spirits. Unfortunately, many of them perished due to hunger and exhaustion. Their heritage was saved thanks to the heroic devotion of their colleagues, who literally saved their friends’ work from destruction and pillage, transferring them piece by piece on their sleighs down the snowy roads of Leningrad to their own houses.

Then, these artworks were given to museums of the Soviet Union. In the exhibition organized by the Theocharakis Foundation you will be able to find oil paintings, watercolour paintings and designs covering a wide range of subjects and artistic styles. αινοτόμες αλλαγές περίμεναν την Κρατική Ορχήστρα Αθηνών (ΚΟΑ), το αρχαιότερο μουσικό σύνολο της χώρας, την εφετινή χρονιά. Ο 36άχρονος Βασίλης Χριστόπουλος ανέλαβε την καλλιτεχνική της διεύθυνση το Μάιο, παραμένοντας παράλληλα κορυφαίος αρχιμουσικός της Φιλαρμονικής Ορχήστρας της Νοτιοδυτικής Γερμανίας, που εδρεύει στην Κωνσταντία. Έχοντας ήδη τιμηθεί με αρκετά διεθνή βραβεία και έχοντας συνεργαστεί με κορυφαίους σολίστ και ορχήστρες, ο νεαρός μουσικός διευθυντής αποφάσισε να αλλάξει άρδην την εικόνα και τον προγραμματισμό της Κρατικής Ορχήστρας. Το Hilton Αθηνών στηρίζει εμπράκτως αυτή την προσπάθεια και είναι από εφέτος ο νέος χορηγός φιλοξενίας της ΚΟΑ.

Ground breaking changes awaited this year the Athens State Orchestra (KOA), the most longstanding music ensemble in Greece. The 36-year-old Vassilis Christopoulos took over the Artistic Direction in May, still remaining Chief Conductor of the Southwest German Philharmonic Orchestra of Constance (Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz). Having been honoured multiple times with numerous international awards and having collaborated with several leading soloists and orchestras, this young musical director decided to change dramatically the image and the programme of the Athens State Orchestra. The Hilton Athens supports fully this effort this year as hospitality sponsor of KOA.

Τι ήταν αυτό που σας έκανε να δεχτείτε την πρόταση να αναλάβετε την καλλιτεχνική διεύθυνση της ΚΟΑ και να μοιράζετε το χρόνο σας ανάμεσα στη Γερμανία και την Ελλάδα; Η διεύθυνση της ΚΟΑ είναι αν όχι η υψηλότερη, μία από τις υψηλότερες θέσεις που μπορεί να μου προσφέρει η χώρα μου. Επιπλέον, με την Ορχήστρα με συνδέουν δεσμοί από μικρή ηλικία: ο πατέρας μου ήταν σολίστ όμποε εδώ. Προσωπικά την παρακολουθώ από μαθητής στο Ωδείο, πήγαινα στις πρόβες, είχα μάθει το ρεπερτόριο και γνώριζα τους μαέστρους μετά το τέλος των προβών στο Παλλάς. Επίσης, τη διηύθυνα για πρώτη φορά όταν ήμουν είκοσι τεσσάρων ετών και με πολλούς από τους νεότερους μουσικούς που την απαρτίζουν ήμασταν μαζί στο Ωδείο Αθηνών. Αποφάσισα, λοιπόν, ότι στις δύσκολες εποχές πρέπει κάποιος να δείχνει τι μπορεί να κάνει και να προσφέρει χωρίς να υπολογίζει τη δυσχερή οικονομική συγκυρία. Ποια ήταν η κατάσταση που βρήκατε όταν αναλάβατε; Πρέπει να ομολογήσω ότι η καλλιτεχνική και η «ανθρώπινη» κατάσταση που βρήκα ήταν καλύτερες απ’ ό,τι περίμενα. Η Ορχήστρα αποτελείται από πολύ καλούς μουσικούς, σολίστες με εξαιρετικές σπουδές. Αυτό που χρειαζόταν ήταν έναν άνθρωπο που θα δούλευε το κομμάτι της ομοιογένειας και της ορχηστρι-

What led you to accept the Artistic Direction of KOA and share your time between Germany and Greece?

KOA’s direction is one of the highest posts my country can offer me, if not the highest. I was honoured by it. Moreover, I have ties that connect me with the Orchestra since I was a child: my father was the solo oboist. Personally, I have been following the Orchestra’s steps, since I was a student at the Conservatory, I used to watch the rehearsals, I had learned the repertoire and, after the rehearsals at Pallas theatre, I had got acquainted with the conductors. Also, I first conducted the orchestra when I was twenty-four years old and I used to attend the Athens Conservatory along with many of the younger musicians that nowadays take part in the orchestra. So, I decided that in difficult times you have to give what you are capable of giving and offer it regardless of the difficulties of this economic juncture.

What was the state of the orchestra when you took over?

I have to admit that the state of the artistic part and “human parameter” part was better than I expected. The Orchestra consists of a group of excellent musicians, soloists with exceptional studies. What was needed was someone to work on homogeneity and orchestral discipline. This brought results fast enough. I was particularly surprised in a positive way by the orchestra’s artistic quality and its

members’ capabilities, as well as by their spirit, their diligence and their focus. It was particularly moving for me to see that, even from the first concert this year, in October, the orchestra proved to be able to give outstanding performances thanks to its capabilities and its differentiation of style, interpreting the new differentiated repertoire it has been asked to perform. The financial situation, however, was grave and now it has become tragic ... worsening every day. The orchestra had always had balanced budgets. The Ministry of Culture decided that for 2011 it would provide us with half the budget of the amount we received in 2009. However, I decided to take over the direction, conscious of the difficult times my country is currently living into. But now, funding has been cut down to 49% of the total amount we were supposed to receive this year. This means that this year’s financial programming is up in the air, since our estimates were different in the beginning of the year.

Apart from the financial aspect, does the Orchestra require other elements too in order to recover?

It requires a better promotion of its work, which is indeed pretty exciting and of high artistic quality. For some reason, its work is not communicated correctly, and as a result we do not get as much audience in our concerts as we would like. Moreover, the state should let the Orchestra renew itself. Each orchestra has a natural pace of renewal: musicians retire and should be replaced with new, talented ones. The Orchestra has not hired new musicians for the organic positions since 2007. So, it is seriously lacking in human resources.

Which are the main axes of this year’s programme?

This year’s artistic programming is designed to cover the crucial gaps in the Orchestra’s repertoire. For the first time we consciously chose to perform music from the Baroque era up to the 21st century. In a way, we cover the whole repertoire of grand music. Secondly, we put five new Greek composers into the limelight: we have placed orders for musical performances that we will perform for the first time. So, emphasis is put on modern Greek musical creation.

And, this year, we introduce the idea of thematic circles of five concerts each, which will be divided around the year. In other words, we create a dramaturgical coherence, a cohesive net among the concerts. This is an action that provides a philosophically based programming: we do not have random or impromptu concerts that our conductors may like. There are, for example, circles dedicated to water, to sacrifice, to Mozart.

What else changes this year?

First of all, the aesthetic of the orchestra changes, its image towards the world. The first step towards this goal is made with the new logo we created, which obviously brings to mind a modern European orchestra: it is bright, recognizable, joyful. Our programmes too have become particularly aesthetically pleasing, and the way we approach our audience also changes. We try to attract them in a variety of ways. For example, there is a discount policy for those who buy tickets of all four circles. I must stress that, one way or another, KOA tickets have been very low cost for several years now: €10-20 for everyone and €5 for students, which is cheaper than a cinema ticket. Another significant institution that we introduce is the speeches before the concerts: those who have purchased a concert ticket, may come fourty-five minutes earlier in order to attend, free of charge, a short simple speech and not some kind of musicological lecture, regarding the parts of the concert and the ties that bind them together, in order to make the experience of the performance more direct and easy to relate. Moreover, since September, tickets are available for all programmed concerts till June 2012. Additionally, there are extra services provided to our artists. Hilton Athens’ role has been very crucial in this part, as this year’s hospitality sponsor of our guest artists. I would like to express my gratitude, because it is an ideal place of hospitality.

κής πειθαρχίας. Αυτό έφερε αποτελέσματα σχετικά γρήγορα. Με εξέπληξαν θετικά τόσο το επίπεδο της ορχήστρας και οι δυνατότητές της όσο και η διάθεση, η εργατικότητα των μουσικών και η συγκέντρωσή τους. Ήταν ιδιαίτερα συγκινητικό για μένα, καθώς ήδη από την πρώτη εφετινή συναυλία, τον Οκτώβριο, η ορχήστρα απέδειξε ότι μπορεί να εντυπωσιάσει με τις ικανότητές της και τη στυλιστική διαφοροποίηση, με την οποία ερμηνεύει το διαφορετικό ρεπερτόριο που έχει κληθεί να υπηρετήσει. Η οικονομική κατάσταση, όμως, ήταν πολύ στενόχωρη και πλέον έχει γίνει δραματική... χειροτερεύει μέρα με τη μέρα. Η ορχήστρα είχε ισοσκελισμένους ισολογισμούς μέχρι σήμερα. Το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού αποφάσισε να χορηγήσει το 2011 τα μισά χρήματα σε σχέση με αυτά που παίρναμε το 2009. Παρά ταύτα, αποφάσισα να αναλάβω τη διεύθυνση, συναισθανόμενος τη δύσκολη συγκυρία της χώρας μου. Τώρα όμως ξαφνικά η επιχορήγηση έχει περισταλεί στο 49% επί του συνόλου που θα παίρναμε εφέτος. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι ο εφετινός προγραμματισμός μας είναι στον αέρα, καθώς άλλα είχαμε υπολογίσει στις αρχές του έτους. Εκτός από το οικονομικό, η Ορχήστρα χρειάζεται κάποια άλλα στοιχεία για να ανακάμψει; Η καλύτερη προβολή του έργου της, το οποίο είναι συναρπαστικό και υψηλού επιπέδου. Για διάφορους λόγους, όμως, δεν επικοινωνείται σωστά, με αποτέλεσμα να μην έχουμε τόσο κόσμο στις συναυλίες μας όσο θα θέλαμε. Πρέπει, επίσης, το κράτος να μας επιτρέψει να ανανεωθούμε. Κάθε ορχήστρα έχει ένα φυσικό ρυθμό ανανέωσης: υπάρχουν μουσικοί που συνταξιοδοτούνται και πρέπει να αντικατασταθούν από νέους, ταλαντούχους. Η Ορχήστρα δεν έχει προσλάβει νέους μουσικούς για τις οργανικές της θέσεις από το 2007. Άρα εμφανίζει σημαντικές ελλείψεις σε ανθρώπινο δυναμικό. Ποιοι είναι οι άξονες του εφετινού καλλιτεχνικού προγράμματος; Ο καλλιτεχνικός προγραμματισμός της εφετινής χρονιάς έρχεται να καλύψει σημαντικά κενά στο ρεπερτόριο της Ορχήστρας. Για πρώτη φορά παίζουμε συνειδητά μουσική από την εποχή μπαρόκ μέχρι τον 21ο αιώνα. Καλύπτουμε, δηλαδή, όλο το φάσμα του ρεπερτορίου της μεγάλης μουσικής. Κατά δεύτερον, δίνουμε βήμα σε πέντε νέους Έλληνες συνθέτες: έχουμε κάνει παραγγελίες για έργα, που θα τα ερμηνεύσουμε σε πρώτη εκτέλεση. Άρα δίνεται έμφαση στη σύγχρονη ελληνική δημιουργία. Επίσης, εφέτος εισάγουμε τη λογική των θεματικών κύκλων από πέντε συναυλίες καθένας, οι οποίοι διασπείρονται μέσα στη χρονιά. Δημιουργούμε ένα συνεκτικό ιστό ανάμεσα σε συναυλίες. Αυτή η κίνηση παρέχει φιλοσοφικό υπόβαθρο στον προγραμματισμό: δεν έχουμε διάσπαρτες ή τυχαίες συναυλίες με έργα που αρέσουν στους μαέστρους. Υπάρχουν, π.χ., κύκλοι αφιερωμένοι στο νερό, τη θυσία, τον Mozart. Τι άλλο θα αλλάξει από εφέτος; Η αισθητική της ορχήστρας, η εικόνα της προς τα έξω. Αρχής γενομένης από το λογότυπο που δημιουργήσαμε, το οποίο σαφώς παραπέμπει σε μία σύγχρονη ευρωπαϊκή ορχήστρα: είναι φωτεινό, αναγνωρίσιμο, χαρούμενο. Τα προγράμματά μας, επίσης, έχουν γίνει εξαιρετικά καλαίσθητα, ενώ αλλάζει ο τρόπος που αντιμετωπίζουμε το κοινό μας. Για παράδειγμα, υπάρχει εκπτωτική πολιτική για όσους αγοράσουν εισιτήρια και από τους τέσσερις κύκλους. Πρέπει να υπογραμμίσω ότι, ούτως ή άλλως, τα εισιτήρια των συναυλιών της ΚΟΑ είναι πολύ φθηνά εδώ και χρόνια: €10-20 για όλο τον κόσμο και €5 για τους φοιτητές. Ένας άλλος σημαντικός θεσμός που εισάγουμε είναι οι ομιλίες πριν από τις συναυλίες: οποιοσδήποτε έχει προμηθευτεί εισιτήριο για μία συναυλία, μπορεί να έρθει τρία τέταρτα νωρίτερα για να ακούσει δύο απλά λόγια σχετικά με τα έργα της συναυλίας. Επίσης, από το Σεπτέμβριο διατίθενται τα εισιτήρια για όλες τις προγραμματισμένες συναυλίες μέχρι τον Ιούνιο του 2012. Επιπροσθέτως, αυξάνουμε τις παροχές προς τους καλλιτέχνες μας. Σε αυτό το σημείο έχει παίξει σημαντικό ρόλο το Hilton Αθηνών, που είναι ο χορηγός φιλοξενίας των καλλιτεχνών μας εφέτος. Θέλω να το ευχαριστήσω, γιατί είναι ένας ιδανικός χώρος φιλοξενίας.

σοι τον παρακολουθούμε χρόνια ξέρουμε πως τα πρώτα δείγματα της πολύ επιτυχημένης δουλειάς του –κοσμήματα, αξεσουάρ, ρούχα– φλέρταραν με το μπαρόκ. Οι «θεατράλε» συλλογές του ήταν τότε, κάποιες φορές, σχεδιασμένες και για το θέατρο, το οποίο ανήκει στις βασικές σπουδές και αγάπες του. Από την άλλη, όλη αυτή η αναγεννησιακή χλιδή αφήνει χώρο και για το φολκλόρ, για το ethnic chic, για το militair, τονίζοντας τη γυναικεία δύναμη και την αναμφισβήτητη εξουσία που μπορεί να ασκεί η γοητεία.

Mέσα από τις επιδείξεις του, η γυναίκα εμφανίζεται κυρίαρχη, δυνατή, γοητευτικά εξουσιαστική, δεν φοβάται τη λάμψη, ούτε την υπερβολή, ενώ διαθέτει διαχρονική ομορφιά, χιούμορ και αυτοεπίγνωση. Καθόλου παράδοξο που η μούσα του ήταν πάντοτε –και εξακολουθεί να είναι– η Charlotte Rampling.

Those of us who have been following his work all these years, we know that the first samples of his very successful creations – jewellery, accessories, clothes – were bordering the Baroque. Back then, his “theatrical” collections were sometimes designed for plays too, which is a basic part of his studies and one of his passions. On the other hand, this voluminous expression of renaissance luxury has enough space for folklore, ethnic chic and militaire, emphasizing on the feminine power and the unquestionable authority of allurement. In his catwalk shows, women emerge sovereign, powerful, alluringly wielding, not afraid of glowing nor exaggeration, and in the same time they possess an everlasting beauty, humour and self-awareness. After all, it is not strange that his muse had always been – and still is – Charlotte Rampling.

Το πιο χαρακτηριστικό ίσως που βλέπει κάποιος στα ρούχα και τα αξεσουάρ σας είναι ότι δεν φοβάστε να αναμείξετε ετερόκλητα στυλ. Πώς γίνεται το αποτέλεσμα να είναι πάντα τόσο αρμονικό; Την ίδια έκπληξη ένιωσα και εγώ όταν φέρνοντας μία τρέσα από κάποιο παζάρι του Αφγανιστάν και ράβοντάς τη σε ένα μπούστο, μου θύμισε στολή από τη Θράκη ή την Ήπειρο. Το ίδιο, άλλωστε, συνέβη και με κομμάτια παλιά από αγορές του Παρισιού, του Λονδίνου και της Νέας Υόρκης, που συνδυάστηκαν υπέροχα με δικά μας βυζαντινά. Δεν πρόκειται για σύμπτωση. Οι υπόγειες συνδέσεις των πολιτισμών δημιουργούν ισχυρές εικαστικές συγγένειες και αν μπορέσεις να ταιριάξεις σωστά τα στοιχεία, έχεις ένα όμορφο αποτέλεσμα, που ενδεχομένως εμπεριέχει πολλές διαφορετικές κουλτούρες. Στην εποχή της κρίσης η μόδα πλήττεται δραματικά. Παρά ταύτα, το ατελιέ σας παραμένει απόλυτα δημιουργικό, βγάζοντας ανελλιπώς τις συλλογές της σεζόν και κρατώντας ζωηρό το ενδιαφέρον των πελατισσών του. Αυτό συμβαίνει για δύο λόγους. Ο ένας είναι ότι η δουλειά μου, αλλά και η σχέση μου με το κοινό είναι προσωπικές. Οι τιμές, λοιπόν, προσαρμόστηκαν αμέσως στις ανάγκες αυτού του κοινού, χωρίς να χρειαστούν γι’ αυτό πολλές δια-

The most typical feature we notice in your clothes and accessories is that you are not afraid to mix disparate styles. How do you manage to always get such a harmonious result?

I felt the same surprise when I brought a braid from a flea market in Afghanistan and sewed it onto a bust; it reminded me of women’s traditional outfit in Thrake or in Epirus. The same thing happened with old garments for Paris, London and New York flea markets, combined in a wonderful way with our own Byzantine style clothing. This is not a coincidence. The subtle connections of civilizations form powerful artistic relations and if you are able to combine the elements correctly, you get a beautiful result, which possibly consists of many different cultures.

During a time of crisis, fashion is dramatically stricken. Nonetheless, your atelier remains extremely creative, continuously producing each season’s collections and keeping alert its customers’ interest.

There are two reasons why this happens. The first one is the fact that my work, and my relationship with my public, is personal. So, prices were immediately adjusted to this public’s needs without much fuss and process. On the other hand,

Με τον συνεργάτη μου, Γιάννη Λεμπέση, προσπαθούμε –και ευτυχώς το καταφέρνουμε– να τηρούμε αυτές τις υψηλές προϋποθέσεις, επομένως η κρίση μάς κάνει απλώς πιο προσεκτικούς και πιο ευρηματικούς. Είναι εύκολο να κρατήσετε χαμηλά τις τιμές, όταν δουλεύετε με όρους υψηλής ραπτικής; Συμβαίνει με πολύ κόπο και ανάλογο ψάξιμο. Κατασκευάζω τις δημιουργίες μου στην Ελλάδα, βρίσκω όμως τις πρώτες ύλες στη χώρα παραγωγής τους. Δεν πηγαίνω στις εκθέσεις για να τα βρω όλα μαζί μία και καλή. Πηγαίνω στα παζάρια της Ανατολής ή της Δύσης και αγοράζω τις πέτρες, τα υφάσματα, τις τρέσες κατευθείαν από τους τεχνίτες. Έτσι, είμαι σίγουρος ότι είναι μοναδικά, αυθεντικά και ότι κατασκευάστηκαν με παραδοσιακές τεχνικές. Τα εφετινά γιλέκα μου έχουν τρέσες από το Αφγανιστάν, που από μόνες τους είναι κοσμήματα. Από το αναγεννησιακό μπαρόκ στους Ναβάχο, και από την «Άρτα και τα Γιάννενα» σε militair σακάκια. Όλα, όμως, τα κομμάτια σας μπορούν να αναγνωριστούν ανάμεσα σε χιλιάδες. Πώς κάποιος δημιουργός αποκτά ταυτότητα; Άγνωστο. Φαίνεται πως η προσωπική γραφή δηλώνει την παρουσία της ανεξαρτήτως υλικών. Πράγματι, περνώ διάφορες φάσεις. Στη συλλογή «Η Άρτα και τα Γιάννενα» είχα επιστρατεύσει τα αποθέματα του χιούμορ και του αυτοσαρκασμού μου. Όταν όμως λίγο αργότερα δημιούργησα μία συλλογή πολύ πιο λιτή, πάλι ήμουν εγώ –και για πρώτη φορά χωρίς τύψεις– που δεν «φόρτωσα» τόσο πολύ με υλικά τις τσάντες ή τα κοσμήματα. Εξάλλου, σε ό,τι κάνω βάζω όλη την καλή μου ενέργεια. Όλα περνούν από τα χέρια μου. Δεν είναι βιομηχανία. Κάπου, δεν μπορεί, θα φαίνεται αυτό. Οι τσάντες αποτελούν τη νέα εικαστική σας πρόταση. Πρόκειται για τσάντες μεγάλες, πρακτικές, χρήσιμες, που φοριούνται όλες τις ώρες. Πώς εξηγείτε την πρόσφατη λατρεία των γυναικών για τις επώνυμες τσάντες και πόσο «προσθέτει» μία τσάντα στη γυναικεία εμφάνιση; Η βιομηχανία της μόδας επένδυσε στη γυναικεία τσάντα υποκαθιστώντας ουσιαστικά την υψηλή ραπτική, όπου το κοινό ήταν πολύ περιορισμένο. Πρόκειται για φαινόμενο του μάρκετινγκ, όμως οφείλω να παραδεχθώ ότι υπάρχουν τσάντες μεγάλων οίκων που αποτελούν πραγματικά έργα τέχνης. Από την άλλη, οι δικές μου αποτελούν μία συνέχεια της δουλειάς μου στην ίδια πάντα φιλοσοφία. Μοναδικές, από ειδικά κατεργασμένα δέρματα, δουλεμένες με αυθεντικά χειροποίητα στοιχεία και υλικά, εργονομικά μελετημένες για να τις κρατάς όλες τις ώρες. Μία ενδιαφέρουσα τσάντα που ταιριάζει στο στυλ μίας γυναίκας συμπληρώνει την εμφάνιση και αποτελεί έκφραση καλού γούστου.

H μπουτίκ Dassios στο Κολωνάκι ήδη έχει βρει το κοινό της. Θα υπάρξει στο μέλλον κάποιος άλλος χώρος, όπου κάθε ενδιαφερόμενη θα βρίσκει μόνο δικά σας ρούχα ή αξεσουάρ; Ευτυχώς έχουμε καταφέρει να βρισκόμαστε σε πολλά σημεία του πλανήτη και μάλιστα ανάμεσα σε πολύ μεγάλα ονόματα της μόδας. Στην μπουτίκ αναπτύσσεται διάλογος, επικοινωνία, παρέα με τις γυναίκες που εδώ και χρόνια αγοράζουν και αγαπούν τα κομμάτια μου. Τους δίνω ιδέες, μου δίνουν έμπνευση. Αν θέλω και άλλο κατάστημα; Δεν θα το φανταζόμουν τόσο σε ένα αστικό κέντρο όσο σε ένα διεθνές θέρετρο. Θα δούμε...

I work with many influential fashion boutiques abroad, which feature creations by eminent fashion designers, where people are still able to afford something more expensive, although they are particularly demanding. My associate, Yannis Lebessis, and I try – and fortunately succeed in – keeping the standards very high, so the crisis is merely teaching us how to be more cautious and imaginative.

How easy is it to keep the prices low, when you are working on haute couture terms?

It is feasible with great effort and a lot of research. I make my creations in Greece, but I find my raw materials in their country of origin. I do not go to exhibitions in order to find everything at one go. I visit flea markets in the East or in the West and I buy stones, garments, braids directly from the craftsmen. In this way, I am sure of their uniqueness, their authenticity and that they were created according to the traditional techniques. This year’s vests are decorated with braids from Afghanistan, which are jewels by themselves.

From renaissance Baroque to Navajo, and from the “Arta and Yiannena” collection to militaire jackets. Still, all your pieces are recognizable among thousand others. How does someone gain an identity?

I wouldn’t know. It seems like your personal signature is apparent no matter what you use for materials. I have been through many different phases indeed.

In the “Arta and Yiannena” (Arta and Ioannina are two cities in Epirus) collection I had called up all my humour and self-sarcasm. However, just a little later on I created a collection that was much more clean-cut, and it was once more an expression of me, this time creating without the guilt of “exaggerating” using heavy materials on the handbags and jewellery. Besides, I put my positive energy in action in everything I do. Everything is a creation of my own hands.

This is not an industry. I guess this is something you recognize, some detail within my creations.

Handbags are your latest artistic proposal. Handbags large in size, practical, useful, that can be worn any time of the day. What explanation do you give to women’s recent worship of designer handbags and to what extent does a handbag “add” to a woman’s outfit?

The fashion industry invested in women’s handbags basically substituting haute couture, where the public was very limited. This is a marketing phenomenon, although I admit that there are certain handbags by top fashion houses that are true works of art. On the other hand, my handbags are one more step continuous of my work within the same philosophy. Unique, made of special processed leather, crafted with authentic handmade elements and materials, ergonomically tested to be carried around everywhere. An intriguing handbag that fits a woman’s personal style completes her outfit and is an expression of good taste.

Dassios boutique in Kolonaki has already found its target audience.Will there be, in the future, another space, where a person interested exclusively in your clothes and accessories will be able to find them?

Fortunately we have managed to be present in many places around the world and especially among very important fashion designer names. In our boutique we converse with people, we communicate with the women that have been loving and purchasing my pieces for years. I give them ideas, they inspire me.

Whether I would like to have another store? I could not think of it being located in an urban downtown spot. I would probably prefer an international resort. We will see ...

Τα χρήματα που απαιτήθηκαν για την έκθεσή τους προήλθαν τόσο από χορηγίες ιδιωτών όσο και από το κληροδότημα του Γκίκα. Η ΠΙΝΑΚΟΘΗΚΗ ΓΚΙΚΑ ΚΑΙ ΟΙ ΥΠΟΛΟΙΠΕΣ ΣΥΛΛΟΓΕΣ Το κτήριο της οδού Κριεζώτου 3 αποτελεί τυπικό δείγμα της αρχιτεκτονικής του μεσοπολέμου. Η πολυκατοικία κτίστηκε ανάμεσα στο 1932 και το 1934. Ο Νίκος Χατζηκυριάκος-Γκίκας μεγάλωσε στην οδό Ομήρου και μετακόμισε στην Κριεζώτου το 1935 και έμεινε εκεί μέχρι το 1940. Επέστρεψε στην Κριεζώτου στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’50, όταν ανακαίνισε τον τελευταίο όροφο προσθέτοντας έναν επιπλέον. Ο καλλιτέχνης κληροδότησε, ενόσω ήταν εν ζωή, στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη το κτήριο, τα έπιπλα και μία σειρά από έργα. Η Πινακοθήκη Γκίκα άνοιξε το 1991 ως παράρτημα του Μουσείου. Το νέο μουσείο χωρίζει τα εκθέματά του σε δύο ενότητες. Στο ισόγειο, τον πρώτο, το δεύτερο και τον τρίτο όροφο έχει δημιουργηθεί μία πραγματική κιβωτός που περιλαμβάνει όλους τους εκπροσώπους της πνευματικής και της καλλιτεχνικής ζωής της Ελλάδας του 20ού αιώνα. Περισσότεροι από εκατόν ογδόντα δύο καλλιτέχνες, στοχαστές, αρχιτέκτονες, συγγραφείς, ποιητές έχουν συγκεντρωθεί σε αυτούς τους χώρους: Δημήτρης Ροντήρης, Σωκράτης Καραντινός, Νίκος Σκαλκώτας, Γιάννης Ρίτσος κ.ά. The Benaki Museum director, Mr Angelos Delivorrias, is the person behind the inspiration and the execution of the plans for this new museum. The exhibited artworks, apart from the Ghika section, are the outcome of donations, consignments and gratuitous loans for use that followed the continuous appeals and persistent efforts by Mr Angelos Delivorrias, while there are also exhibits that belong to other collections of the Benaki Museum. The required funds for their exhibition derive from private funding but also by the Ghika bequest.

THE GHIKA GALLERY AND THE other COLLECTIONS The building at 3, Kriezotou Str. is a typical example of interwar architecture. The apartment block was built between 1932 and 1934. Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika grew up in Omirou Str. and moved to Kriezotou Str. in 1935, where he stayed till 1940. He returned to Kriezotou Str. in the mid-50s, when he renovated the top floor by adding one additional floor. The artist donated the building to the Benaki Museum, while he was still alive, along with the furniture and several of his artworks.

The Ghika Gallery opened in 1991 as an annex to the Museum. The new museum divides the exhibits into two units. On the ground floor, the first, second and third floors, a true “Noah’s ark” has been created “carrying” in it the representatives of the academic and artistic life of Greece during the 20th century.

More than a hundred and eighty-two artists, thinkers, architects, authors, poets have been brought together in these premises: Dimitris Rondiris, Sokratis Karantinos, Nikos Skalkottas, Yiannis Ritsos, etc. The second floor hosts eminent personalities like: Nikiforos Vrettakos, Vasso Katraki, Yannis Tsarouchis, Manos Hadjidakis, Nikos Gabriel Pentzikis, Yorgos Theotokas, Μ. Karagatsis, Giorgos Seferis, Odysseus Elytis, Constantinos Doxiadis, etc. On the third floor you will find an exhibition of tokens and the work of: Kostas Axelos, Cornelius Castoriadis, Aris Konstantinidis, Rallou Manou, Manos Hadjidakis, Takis Horn, Panayiotis Tetsis, Yiannis Moralis, Manolis Anagnostakis, etc. Through this first ever presentation of them as a body, the generations that experienced the great cultural

Μέσα από την πρώτη αυτή συνολική παρουσίασή τους, οι γενιές που βίωσαν τις μεγάλες πολιτισμικές ανατροπές του 20ού αιώνα γίνονται σημείο αναφοράς για τους νέους τού σήμερα. Ο τέταρτος και ο πέμπτος όροφος υπήρξαν το σπίτι και το εργαστήριο του Νίκου Χατζηκυριάκου-Γκίκα και φιλοξενούν σήμερα την Πινακοθήκη. Στον τέταρτο όροφο βρίσκονται το σαλόνι, η τραπεζαρία και το γραφείο του καλλιτέχνη. Παράλληλα με τα έργα του, εκτίθενται οι συλλογές που διέθετε από αρχαία αντικείμενα και μικρά μπουκάλια για ταμπάκο. Στο σαλόνι υπάρχουν σχέδιά του με θέματα εμπνευσμένα από την Ινδία και την Αφρική. Στην τραπεζαρία κυριαρχεί το μνημειώδες έργο του «Η Κηφισιά», ενώ ο χώρος περιλαμβάνει τα έπιπλα που χρησιμοποιούσε ο καλλιτέχνης. Στον πέμπτο όροφο βρίσκονταν το ατελιέ, η βιβλιοθήκη και οι ξενώνες. Το ατελιέ έχει μείνει ανέπαφο με όλα τα σύνεργα και το σχεδιαστήριό του, η βιβλιοθήκη του ζωγράφου έχει εμπλουτιστεί με πολλές νεότερες εκδόσεις, ενώ οι ξενώνες έχουν μετατραπεί σε γραφεία για διοικητική χρήση του νέου μουσείου. ΤΟ ΠΩΛΗΤΗΡΙΟ Το πωλητήριο, στο ισόγειο του μουσείου, έχει ανοίξει τις πόρτες του από τις αρχές Νοεμβρίου, με στόχο να συνδράμει οικονομικά στην αποπεράτωση της Πινακοθήκης. Τα αντικείμενα που διατίθενται προς πώληση αποτελούν νέες παραγωγές, εμπνευσμένες κατά κύριο λόγο από το έργο του Νίκου Χατζηκυριάκου-Γκίκα, αλλά και γενικότερα από την καλλιτεχνική παραγωγή της γενιάς του μεσοπολέμου, ενώ πλαισιώνονται από μία ιδιαίτερα αξιόλογη συλλογή βιβλίων σχετικής θεματολογίας, τόσο σχετικά με την ελληνική τέχνη όσο και τη διεθνή κίνηση της ίδιας εποχής. Καλλιτέχνες και σχεδιαστές έχουν δημιουργήσει μοναδικά έργα και συνθέσεις και ομάδες σχεδιαστών έχουν επιμεληθεί ειδικές κατασκευές για παιδιά, οι οποίες εντάσσονται σε ένα εξαιρετικά

The fourth and fifth floors were Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika’s residence and workshop; and this is where the Gallery is found today. On the fourth floor there are the living room, the dining room and the artist’s study. Along with his artworks, there are collections of his that are exhibited too, comprising of ancient artefacts and small tobacco bottles. In the living room, there are drawings by Ghika inspired by India and Africa. In the dining room, the prevailing element is his legendary work “Kifissia” while, in the same room, there is also the furniture used by the artist himself. On the fifth floor, there are the studio, the library and the guestrooms. The studio has remain intact with all his painting equipment and drawing table, the artist’s library has been enriched by a lot of recent editions, while the guestrooms have been turned into offices for the administrative purposes of the new museum. There are more than seventy artworks

by Ghika exhibited, covering all aspects of his creative activity from 1921-1990.

At the same time, there is a wide range of drawings, sculptures and illustrated books exhibited, as well as letters, photographs and other unpublished artefacts documenting the artists’ life.

THE MUSEUM SHOP The museum shop, on the ground floor of the museum, is open to the public since early November, and its purpose is to contribute financially to the Gallery’s completion and to the full exhibition of the collections.

The objects for sale are new productions, inspired mainly by Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika’s work and by the interwar generation’s artistic production in general, while there is also a book collection worth-mentioning comprising of similar subjects, on Greek art and the international artistic movements of the same era. Artists and designers have created remarkable artworks and compositions,

Ο ΚΑΛΛΙΤΕΧΝΗΣ Ο Νίκος Χατζηκυριάκος-Γκίκας (1906-1994) είναι ένας από τους σημαντικότερους Έλληνες καλλιτέχνες του 20ού αιώνα. Στα νεανικά του χρόνια υπήρξε μαθητής του Κωνσταντίνου Παρθένη. Το 1923 αναχώρησε για το Παρίσι για σπουδές στη Σορβόνη και παράλληλα συμμετείχε σε ομαδική έκθεση στην γκαλερί Salon des Independants. Τον επόμενο χρόνο εγγράφηκε στην Académie Ranson, όπου παρακολούθησε μαθήματα ζωγραφικής, με καθηγητή τον Roger Bissiere, και χαρακτικής, με καθηγητή τον Δημήτρη Γαλάνη. Η πρώτη ατομική του έκθεση οργανώθηκε το 1927 στην Galerie Percier στο Παρίσι. Το 1928 εξέθεσε για πρώτη φορά στην Αθήνα, από κοινού με τον γλύπτη Μιχάλη Τόμπρο. Το 1970 η Ακαδημία Αθηνών του απένειμε το Αριστείο Καλών Τεχνών και το 1972 τον εξέλεξε τακτικό της μέλος. Το 1982 εκλέχθηκε επίτιμος διδάκτωρ του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης, το 1987 επίτιμο μέλος της βρεταννικής Royal Academy of Arts και το 1991 επίτιμος διδάκτωρ της Φιλοσοφικής Σχολής του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών. Η τελευταία έκθεσή του παρουσιάστηκε το 1994. Εκτός από τη ζωγραφική, ο Γκίκας ασχολήθηκε με τη γλυπτική, τη χαρακτική, τη σκηνογραφία, την εικονογράφηση βιβλίων και την κριτική τέχνης. Συνέγραψε βιβλία, άρθρα και μελέτες για την αρχιτεκτονική και την αισθητική, καθώς και δοκίμια για την ελληνική τέχνη. Η Ύδρα των παιδικών του χρόνων έπαιξε σημαντικό ρόλο στη διαμόρφωση της αισθητικής του, αφού του επέτρεψε να συνδυάσει στοιχεία γεωμετρικού κυβισμού, αρχιτεκτονικής και φωτός.

while groups of designers have created special constructions for children, which are part of a particularly abundant department having as purpose to familiarize younger generations with art. The children’s department also includes books, constructions and toys. In the museum shop you will also find artwork reproductions of artists hosted in the permanent exhibition.

THE ARTIST Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika (1906-1994) is one of the most eminent Greek artists of the 20th century. When he was young, he studied under Konstantinos Parthenis. In 1923, he went to Paris to study at the Sorbonne, and, in the meantime, he exhibited his work in the group exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants. The following year, he enrolled at the Académie Ranson, where he took painting classes by Roger Bissiere and engraving classes by Dimitris Galanis. His first personal exhibition was held in 1927 at the Galerie Percier in Paris. In 1928, he held his first exhibition in Athens, together with the sculptor Michalis Tombros. In 1970, the Academy of Athens awarded him with the Prize for Excellence in the Fine Arts and in 1972 he was elected a regular member of the Academy. In 1982, he was granted the Honorary Doctorate by of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in 1987, he was elected an honorary member of the British Royal Academy of Arts and, in 1991, he was granted the Honorary Doctorate by the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens. His last exhibition took place in 1994. Apart from painting, Ghika occupied himself with sculpture, engraving, set design, book illustrations and art criticism.

He wrote books, articles and studies on architecture and aesthetics, as well as essays on Greek art. Hydra, the place he spent his childhood, was a very important place for him and contributed to the formation of his aesthetic values, urging him to combine the elements of geometrical cubism, architecture and light.

επαναπροσδιορισμός της σχέσης μας με το φυσικό περιβάλλον, τα τελευταία χρόνια, ωθεί όλο και περισσότερες γυναίκες, αλλά και άντρες, να ευαισθητοποιηθούν σχετικά με το πόσο υγιείς είναι οι ουσίες που έρχονται σε επαφή με το σώμα τους. Χημικά συντηρητικά, σιλικόνες, πετροχημικά γίνονται σταδιακά λέξεις ταμπού και απαγορευμένες για τις ελληνικές εταιρείες καλλυντικών. Αξιοποιώντας την πάμπλουτη ελληνική χλωρίδα (6.500 είδη φυτών έχουν καταγραφεί), οι εταιρείες επαναφέρουν τη θεραπευτική και καλλυντική χρήση των φυτών, τα οποία, ήδη από την αρχαιότητα, μελέτησαν ο Ιπποκράτης, ο Διοσκουρίδης, ο Θεόφραστος κ.ά. Με αγνά υλικά, όπως το μέλι, το λάδι, το γάλα, που είχαν ξεχαστεί τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες εξαιτίας της ευκολίας και του χαμηλού κόστους των χημικών ουσιών, αυτές οι εταιρείες δημιουργούν καλλυντικά φιλικά προς τον άνθρωπο και το περιβάλλον. Ως αποτέλεσμα, έχουν κατακτήσει τόσο την εγχώρια αγορά όσο και σημαντική μερίδα του εξωτερικού. Η μεγάλη εξαγωγική τους δραστηριότητα αποτελεί πρότυπο δυναμικής μίας υγιούς επιχείρησης, ειδικότερα σε μία δύσκολη εποχή σαν αυτή που διανύει ο επιχειρηματικός κόσμος.

Redefining our relation with the natural environment has recently been leading more and more women, and also men, towards recognizing the level of how healthy the substances that come into contact with our body might be. Chemical preservatives, silicones and petrochemicals are evolving into taboo and forbidden words in the Greek cosmetics industry. Benefitting from the vast Greek flora (6,500 plant species have been registered), companies restore the therapeutic and cosmetic use of plants, which have been studied since ancient times by Hippocrates, Dioscorides, Theophrastus and many more. Using pure ingredients like honey, oil or milk that had been forgotten during the last decades due to the easy access and the low cost of chemical substances, these companies manufacture cosmetics that are friendly to the environment and to people. As a result, they have conquered the local market as well as a significant share of international markets. Their remarkable export activities serve as a bright example of a dynamic and healthy business, especially in difficult times like the ones the business world is currently crossing.

Who is who: Fresh Line was founded in 1992 by Mayra Vagioni Stasinopoulou, when she decided to open a shop that would put on the market cosmetics, made exactly in the same way she would make them at home. Nowadays, there are a hundred and thirty shops in several countries (seventy-five in Russia, thirty-five in Greece, seven in Turkey, etc.).

The birth of the idea: “Since I was a little girl I used to make cosmetics myself at home, using the fresh ingredients from the kitchen and the garden, applying my grandmother’s recipes. That led me to the study of the natural ingredients and their abilities. So, I started reading books on aromatherapy in Ancient Greece, as well as the ancient botanists and physicians.”

The first product: “Fresh facial masks with ingredients from the kitchen.”

The originality: “The ‘fresh bar’ cosmetics: they are produced on a daily basis, and based on demand, they contain fresh limited time preservatives, are sold by weight and consist of fresh ingredients like milk, honey and fruit.”

The relation with the foreign markets: “There is significant demand for our company’s products and we are overwhelmed by the almost daily cooperation proposals we get from a variety of countries. The first product: “It was a combination of olive oil with glycerin, lanoline and lemon. An evolution of the recipe that gave my grandmother, even when she was more elderly, the most beautiful and soft hands I have ever seen.”

πλατεία Καρύτση περιστοιχίζεται από παλιά κτήρια, τα περισσότερα από τα οποία κτίστηκαν τη δεκαετία του ’60 και στη συνέχεια έγιναν βιοτεχνίες. Αυτές με τη σειρά τους έδωσαν τη θέση τους στα σημερινά καφέ-μπαρ, τα οποία, με πρώτο το «Toy», χρησίμευσαν αρχικά ως στέκια των δημοσιογράφων της περιοχής. Εδώ λοιπόν, και συγκεκριμένα στην οδό Χρήστου Λαδά, βρίσκεται το κτήριο που μέχρι το 2004 στέγαζε τα έντυπα –παλαιότερα και τα πιεστήρια– του Δημοσιογραφικού Οργανισμού Λαμπράκη (πλέον έχει μείνει μόνο ο τομέας των αγγελιών και το Travel Plan). Εδώ όμως είναι και ο Φιλολογικός Σύλλογος Παρνασσός, το Ιστορικό Μουσείο Ελευθερίου Βενιζέλου, το Θέατρο Μουσούρη, το θρυλικό φωτογραφείο του Μεγαλοκονόμου και ένα μέρος του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού. Και για να προσθέσουμε άλλη μία πινελιά στον πίνακα των αντιθέσεων, η Καρύτση είναι από τις λίγες περιοχές όπου ακόμη και σήμερα θα βρεις ένα μαγαζί μόλις 40 τ.μ. να ενοικιάζεται €2.000 το μήνα. Ας πιάσουμε όμως το νήμα από την αρχή...

The KARYTSI square is surrounded by old buildings, most of which were built during the 60s and, then, they were turned into small industries. Those industries, eventually, gave their place to the modern cafés and bars, which, with “Toy” being the pioneer among them on Karytsi, served as a hangout for local journalists. This is where, specifically in Christou Lada Str., Lambrakis Press S.A. was housed until 2004 – the offices and, at some point in the past, the printing presses too – (nowadays the only departments that still remain there are the classified advertisements and Travel Plan toursit agency). This is, however, where you will find the Parnassos Literary Society, the History Foundation of Eleftherios Venizelos, the Moussouri Theatre, the legendary photography shop of Megalokonomos and a department of the Ministry of Culture. And in order to add one more paintbrush stroke on this canvas of contrasts, Karytsi square is one of the few regions where, even nowadays, a small shop of 40m2 may have a monthly rent of €2,000. Let’s start our little story from the beginning ...

Εν αρχή ην ο Άγιος Γεώργιος ο Καρύκης (που με τα χρόνια παραφράστηκε σε Καρύτση), ο οποίος βρίσκεται εδώ από τα τέλη του 11ου αιώνα. Ο παλαιός ναός ανήκε στην ιστορική αθηναϊκή οικογένεια των Καρύκηδων, η οποία είχε εκδιωχθεί από την πόλη ήδη από τους τουρκοβενετικούς πολέμους – από την οικογένεια Καρύκη αναδείχτηκε το 1593 ο μητροπολίτης Αθηνών Θεοφάνης Α΄, ο οποίος έφτασε στην κορυφή της ποιμαντορικής κλίμακας, αφού το 1597 εξελέγη Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινουπόλεως. Ο ναός παρέμεινε σε σχετικά καλή κατάσταση, παρά τις καταστροφές κατά τη διάρκεια της επανάστασης και το 1834 καταγραφόταν στον κατάλογο των δέκα ενοριών της Αθήνας, ενώ το 1858 συγκαταλεγόταν ανάμεσα στις είκοσι ενορίες των Αθηνών. Στα μέσα του 19ου αιώνα, οι ενορίτες του Αγίου Γεωργίου έδωσαν σαφή οδηγία στον αρχιτέκτονα Λύσανδρο Καυταντζόγλου να τον ανοικοδομήσει με βάση το «βυζαντινό» ρυθμό. Η ασάφεια, όμως, που επικρατούσε την εποχή ως προς την πραγματική σημασία του όρου αποδεικνύεται και από την τελική μορφή του ναού που σχεδίασε ο Καυταντζόγλου για να ικανοποιήσει την επιθυμία των χορηγών. In the beginning there was Aghios Georgios Karykis (which as the years went by was paraphrased into Karytsis), a church that still stands here since the 11th century. The old temple was property of the historical Karykis family, who were persecuted from Constantinople during the Turkish-Venetian war. One of the members of the Karykis family was the Metropolitan Bishop Theophanes I of Athens, elected in 1593, who reached the top echelon of the pastoral leadership when he was elected Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople in 1597.

The church remained in a relatively good state, despite the destructions during the Greek Revolution, and in 1834 it was listed among the ten parish churches of Athens, while in 1858 it was one of the twenty Athenian parishes. In the mid19th century, the parishioners of Aghios Georgios were pretty strict with the instructions they gave to the architect Lysandros Kaftatzoglou for its reconstruction in the Byzantine style. However, the ambiguity the term had fallen in during those times is verified by the resulting style of the church, as it was designed by Kaftatzoglou in order to please his sponsors’ wish. κτίστηκε στο ρυθμό της τρίκλιτης, θολωτής και τρουλαίας βασιλικής, χωρίς όμως μεγάλη συνάφεια με τον αντίστοιχο βυζαντινό τύπο. Στην ουσία ο Καυταντζόγλου ακολούθησε ρωμανικά πρότυπα, καλύπτοντας το κεντρικό κλίτος με την εναλλαγή σταυροθολίων, εμφανών νευρώσεων και θόλων, χωρίς όμως τη διατήρηση του ύψους των αντίστοιχων δυτικών ναών. Ο περίβολος της εκκλησίας –εκεί δηλαδή που τώρα κάθεται αμέριμνα ο κόσμος και απολαμβάνει δροσερά κοκτέιλ– χρησιμοποιήθηκε από την αρχαιότητα μέχρι και το 1840 ως νεκροταφείο. Στο εσωτερικό του ναού οι αγιογραφίες είναι δυτικότροπης τεχνοτροπίας – πολλές συζητήσεις προκάλεσε στην εποχή της (1895) η μεγάλη παράσταση «Άφετε τα Παιδία» του αρχαιολόγου Αλεξάνδρου Φιλαδελφέως. Κατά τα σύγχρονα χρόνια, ο ναός του Αγίου Γεωργίου Καρύτση στιγματίστηκε από τη δολοφονία του υπουργού Δικαιοσύνης, Χρήστου Λαδά, το Μεγάλο Σάββατο του 1948, από τον Ευστράτιο Μουτσογιάννη, μέλος της ΟΠΛΑ. Η χορωδία του Αγίου Γεωργίου Καρύτση έχει μεγάλη ιστορία που ξεκινά από το 1897, τη χρονιά που ιδρύθηκε από τον μουσουργό Θεμιστοκλή Πολυκράτη. Τα τελευταία σαράντα χρόνια εδραίωσε τη φήμη της, ενώ είναι γνωστή για τις ψαλμωδίες της τη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα (στη σελίδα http://symbole.gr/musicg/grtmp/257-2010-09-23-21-44-50 θα βρείτε ηχογραφήσεις της χορωδίας από το 1950). Το κτήριο παραχωρήθηκε στον Ελευθέριο Βενιζέλο από τον Ιωάννη Θεολογίτη και εκεί ιδρύθηκε το 1917 η Λέσχη Φιλελευθέρων, όπου σύχναζε η αφρόκρεμα των τότε πολιτικών. Στα υπόγεια του κτηρίου υπάρχουν καταφύγια για τον πόλεμο. Προχωρώντας πιο κάτω, στη Στοά της Εστίας, βρίσκεται η εταιρεία Φελιζόλ, που ιδρύθηκε το 1936 και στις ημέρες της ακμής της είχε αναλάβει όλα τα μεγάλα έργα μονώσεων για εταιρείες, όπως η Χαλυβουργική και η Amstel. be a three-aisled, vaulted, domed basilica, and not very similar to the respective Byzantine style churches. What Kaftatzoglou actually did was to study Romanesque architectural samples, covering the main aisle with an alternation of groin vaults, ribs and cupolae, without preserving the height of the respective western temples. The church yard – where nowadays carefree people sit around and enjoy their fancy cocktails – was used from ancient times up until 1840 as a cemetery. In the interior of the church, the religious paintings are of western style – during its time (1895) there was heated debate caused by the great depiction “Let the Children” by the archaeologist Alexander Philadelpheos. During recent years, the church of Aghios Georgios Karytsis was marked by the assassination of the Minister of Justice Christos Ladas, on the Holy Saturday of 1948,

by Efstratios Moustoyiannis, a member of OPLA. Aghios Georgios Karytsis’ choir has a great history that began in 1897, when it was founded by the composer Themistocles Polycrates. During the last forty years, it has established a substantial fame, while it has become renowned for its psalms during the Holy Week (on the webpage http://symbole.gr/musicg/grtmp/257-2010-09-23-21-44-50 you will find recordings of the choir from the 1950s).

One of the historical buildings on Christou Lada Str. is the one located on number 2, which houses a lot of shops as well as the History Foundation of Eleftherios Venizelos. The building was assigned to Eleftherios Venizelos by Ioannis Theologitis and that is where the Liberals Club was founded in 1917, the place where all the political elite of the time was frequenting. In the basement of the building there are war shelters. Moving down the street, you come across the Estia Arcade, where the company Felizol is located, founded in 1936, which during its heyday had undertaken the grand insulation projects for companies like Halyvourgiki and Amstel. Στα ιστορικά κτήρια της πλατείας συγκαταλέγεται εκείνο του Φιλολογικού Συλλόγου Παρνασσού. Πρόκειται για τον πρώτο πολιτιστικό σύλλογο της Αθήνας που ιδρύθηκε από τον νομισματολόγο Παύλο Λάμπρου. Πολύ σύντομα, ο Παρνασσός έγινε γνωστός όχι μόνο για τις εκθέσεις, τις συναυλίες και τις ομιλίες που διοργάνωνε, αλλά και για την εκπαίδευση των άπορων παιδιών. Η ιδιαίτερη ανάπτυξή του συνέπεσε με την είσοδο στη χορεία των μελών του πρύτανη Κωνσταντίνου Παπαρρηγόπουλου, ο οποίος μάλιστα ανακηρύχθηκε επίτιμος πρόεδρος. Ο σύλλογος ιδρύθηκε το 1865 και μεταφέρθηκε στο κτήριο της Καρύτση, που κτίστηκε σε σχέδια του Ιφικράτη Κοκκίδη, το 1891 (μέχρι τότε έδρευε στο αρχοντικό του Λάμπρου, στην οδό Παρθεναγωγείου, σήμερα Πεσμαζόγλου). Κατά τη διάρκεια της κατοχής, ο Παρνασσός επιτάχθηκε και μετατράπηκε σε στρατοδικείο των γερμανικών στρατευμάτων. Το ανεξίτηλο στίγμα τους στην ιστορία του Παρνασσού έχουν αφήσει οι: Αριστοτέλης Βαλαωρίτης, Δημήτριος Βικέλας, Άγγελος Βλάχος, Εμμανουήλ Ροΐδης, Ανδρέας Λασκαράτος, Γεώργιος Βιζυηνός, Κωστής Παλαμάς, Γεώργιος Σουρής, Γρηγόριος Ξενόπουλος, και ο κατάλογος μοιάζει ατελείωτος... Τις σημερινές ημέρες ο Παρνασσός, που τα τελευταία χρόνια ανακαινίστηκε πλήρως με την οικονομική ενίσχυση του Ιδρύματος Νιάρχου, διαθέτει αξιόλογη βιβλιοθήκη με πάνω από 70.000 τίτλους, καθώς και πινακοθήκη με έργα 259 ζωγράφων. The Parnassos Literary Society is also among the historical buildings of the square. It is the first cultural association of Athens, founded by the numismatist Pavlos Lambrou. Soon enough, Parnassos became renowned not only for its exhibitions, concerts and the speeches it held, but also for the education it provided to the poor children. The Society’s development coincided with the introduction of a new member, the Dean Constantine Paparrigopoulos, who later on became its honorary President. The Society was founded in 1865, and was moved to the building on Karytsi, built to the designs of Ificrates Kokkides, in 1891 (originally it was housed in Labros manor, on Parthenagogeiou Str., which nowadays is named Pesmatzoglou Str.). During the German occupation, Parnassos was requisitioned and turned into a German troops’ court-martial. Within Parnassos, many men made an impact, such as: Aristotelis Valaoritis, Dimitrios Vikelas, Aggelos Vlahos, Emmanuel Roidis, Andreas Laskaratos, Georgios Vizyenos, Kostis Palamas, Georgios Souris, Grigorios Xenopoulos, and the list goes on and on ... Today, Parnassos – recently wholly renovated with the financial aid of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation – is equipped with a remarkable library of more than 70,000 titles, and with a gallery comprising of the works of 259 painters. The Society still holds events on music, philosophy and literature, and since 2006 there has been great effort for the interaction with a wider audience – an example of those efforts is the fact that during recent years it has been hosting several events of the Athens Festival.

Early in the afternoon, sophisticated people in their thirties, who enjoy good music after work, enter the square’s bars for the day’s first drink.

The benefit of Karytsi is that those who love it go everywhere. So, in a single bar you may find Fine Art students –standing out for their alternative style in clothing –, journalists, graphic designers and people of the media, of advertising, in general, as well as actors. All together they are a wide group of friends, especially during Friday and Saturday nights when the square is “packed” with people.

Εδώ αναδείχτηκε σε πρωταγωνίστρια η Αλίκη Βουγιουκλάκη, όταν έκανε το ντεμπούτο της στο ρόλο της Eliza Doolittle στο «Ωραία μου Κυρία». Τα τελευταία χρόνια το θέατρο έχει περάσει με επιτυχία στα χέρια του Πέτρου Φιλιππίδη. Όταν στο «Μουσούρη» είχαν πρεμιέρα η Λαμπέτη και ο Χορν, οι φωτορεπόρτερ του Μεγαλοκονόμου (το φωτογραφείο του ήταν στην Άνθιμου Γαζή) βρίσκονταν εκεί για να απαθανατίσουν τη στιγμή και να τρέξουν στις εφημερίδες προκειμένου να παραδώσουν έγκαιρα το υλικό τους. Ο ίδιος ο Κωνσταντίνος Μεγαλοκονόμος, γνωστός και ως «πατριάρχης» του φωτορεπορτάζ, έχει αποτυπώσει με το φακό του ένα τεράστιο κομμάτι της ελληνικής ιστορίας του 20ού αιώνα. Μετά το θάνατό του το 1992, η κόρη του Νικία Μεγαλοκονόμου, με τον συνεργάτη του πατέρα της Ηλία Ζέπο, μετακόμισε στην πλατεία Καρύτση. Αυτό τον καιρό, η κόρη του φωτογράφου τακτοποιεί το αρχείο των 150.000 αρνητικών, με σκοπό να το παραχωρήσει στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη.

Kourkoulos, and even Karolos Koun. This is where Aliki Vougiouklaki became a lead actress, when she debuted as Eliza Doolittle in “My Fair Lady”, following Moussouris’ own advice. In recent years, the theatre has been managed successfully by Petros Filippides. How can anyone forget the queues for the play “Tis Kakomiras” that were long enough to reach the street? On the premiere of Lambeti and Horn at “Moussouri”, the photo reporters of Megalokonomos (the photography shop on Anthimou Gazis Str.) were there to capture the moment and then run to the newspapers to give their material in time. Constantine Megalokonomos himself, renowned as the father of photo reportage, had captured with his camera a significant part of the Greek history in the 20th century. When he passed away in 1992, his daughter Nikia Megalokonomou with her father’s associate Elias Zepos moved to Karytsi square. These days, the photographer’s daughter sorts out the huge archive of 150,000 negatives, with the aim of assigning it to the Benaki Museum.

Στην οδό Καρύτση μπορείτε να ανακαλύψετε τα σφραγιδάδικα, στην Περικλέους λάμπες και ηλεκτρικά όπως και σφραγίδες, όσο κατεβαίνετε, στη Ρόμβης, συσκευασίες και αντίκες, στην Καλαμιώτου υφάσματα, και κάπως έτσι ξετυλίγεται το κουβάρι του εμπορικού κέντρου. Όμως, πριν φύγετε από την πλατεία αξίζει να κάνετε μία επίσκεψη στη «Γωνιά του Καφέ» (Πραξιτέλους 4), για να δείτε πώς τον καβουρντίζουν. Το κατάστημα εδρεύει εδώ από το 1890. Και όπως συμβαίνει ακόμα και με κάθε πέτρα σε αυτή την πλατεία, έχει και αυτό κάτι να προσθέσει στη μακραίωνη ιστορία της Καρύτση...

Each street hidden behind the square has its own character and its own public. On Karytsi street, you may discover the stamp shops, on Perikleous Str. you will find electronic materials like lamps as well as stamps too, climbing down towards Romvis Str. you will find shops selling packaging materials and antiques, on Kalamiotou Str. textiles, and this is more or less how the commercial centre is weaved together. Before leaving the square, it is worth visiting the “Gonia tou Kafe” (the coffee corner on 4, Praxitelous Str.) if you wish to see how coffee is roasted. The shop has been here since 1890. And as it happens with every single stone on this square, it has something to add to its longstanding history on Karytsi ...

ιστορία του “Αριστοκρατικόν” ξεκινά το 1928, όταν ο προπάππους μου, Παναγιώτης Καρράς, έρχεται στην Αθήνα από το Βασιλικό Πωγωνίου. Έχοντας δουλέψει ως βοηθός και ως μάστορας σε καταξιωμένα ζαχαροπλαστεία, αποφασίζει να ανοίξει τη δική του επιχείρηση. Το 1928 εγκαινιάζεται το πρώτο κατάστημα “Αριστοκρατικόν” στην οδό Βουκουρεστίου στον αριθμό 2, στη γωνία με τη Σταδίου. ■ Στη συνέχεια, το 1960, το κατάστημα μεταφέρεται στον αριθμό 6 της ίδιας οδού. Είναι η εποχή που ο Παναγιώτης Καρράς επικεντρώνεται στην παραγωγή σοκολατοειδών. ■ Το “Αριστοκρατικόν” χρησιμοποιεί κατά βάση ελληνικά προϊόντα, τα οποία παντρεύει με τη σοκολάτα, χωρίς τη μεσολάβηση κανενός είδους μηχανήματος. Δεν νοθεύουμε καμία από τις πρώτες ύλες, ούτε τη σοκολάτα, με αποτέλεσμα να δίνουμε στο σοκολατάκι τη μοναδική γεύση που πάνω από ογδόντα χρόνια απολαμβάνουν οι Αθηναίοι, και όχι μόνο. “the history of ‘Aristokratikon’ pastry shop history began in 1928, when my great grandfather, Panayiotis Karras, came to Athens from Vassiliko Pogoniou, Epirus. Having worked as an assistant and head pastry chef in famous pastry shops, he decided to open his own shop. In 1928 the first ‘Aristokratikon’ was inaugurated in 2, Voukourestiou Str., on the corner with Stadiou Str. ■ Then, in 1960, the shop moved to number 6 of the same street. This was when Panayiotis Karras, a visioneer in entrepreneurship, focused on the production of chocolates. This is how the specialization of ‘Aristokratikon’ on hand made chocolates began. ■ ‘Aristokratikon’ focuses on Greek ingredients, which are then united with chocolate, without the use of any machine. Under no circumstances do we adulterate any of the raw materials, neither chocolate, and as a result we get the chocolates with the unique taste that over eighty years now Athenians, and many more, enjoy. We purchase raw materials from all over Greece. ■ We do not export our products wholesale, but we have customers from all over the world, and lately there is the electronic shop (www.aristokratikon.com) at our customer’s service. We have always had famous customers, like royalty: the Queen Sofia of Spain buys her favourite mint chocolate leaves from ‘Aristokratikon’. Grace Kelly was a customer of ours and Maria Kallas too.

Additionally, our list of customers includes Arab sheiks and kings, who purchase our products for their galas and marriages. ■ The most famous product of ‘Aristokratikon’ is the dark chocolate ‘arapaki’. Other popular choices are also the cocoa truffles and the ‘grothies’. On certain occasions, like Christmas, there is excessive demand for ‘kourabiedes’ and ‘melomakarona’ – Greek traditional Christmas sweets. In general, we like to experiment creating new flavours, like the chocolate with spicy paprika, the chocolate sesame splash, the triangle mastic chocolate or the cinnamon white chocolate splash.”

ι κάτοικοι των δύο χωριών του Κόζιακα, του ανατολικότερου βουνού της Κεντρικής Πίνδου, αποφάσισαν, από τη δεκαετία του 1960, να κάνουν στροφή προς την παροχή υπηρεσιών στον τομέα του τουρισμού. Βεβαίως, πίσω από τους πολυτελείς ξενώνες και τις πετρόχτιστες κατοικίες κρύβονται ιστορίες εμπόρων, κτηνοτρόφων και αγροτών, οι οποίοι κάποτε παρήγαν και πουλούσαν σχεδόν τα πάντα. Η ΕΛΑΤΗ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΤΟ ΜΕΓΑΛΥΤΕΡΟ από τα ορεινά χωριά των Τρικάλων –με 750 κατοίκους– και χωρίζεται σε τρεις μαχαλάδες. During the 60s, the residents of Koziakas’ two villages, the eastern part of Central Pindos' mountain range, decided to turn towards the provision of services in the tourism sector. Of course, hidden behind those luxurious guesthouses and stone houses you find the stories of merchants, cattle breeders and farmers, who used to produce and sell almost everything here.

ELATI IS THE LARGEST of the mountain villages of Trikala – with 750 inhabitants – and is separated into three territories. The stones of the old stately houses were crafted by craftsmen from Epirus, with Gidaris’ residence being the most typical example among them, the oldest house of the settlement.

The main road has stayed the same. The cafés are still there, open, attracting a large number of clients each Sunday morning. The “Kentri”, with its fifty types of tea and fourty types of chocolate, is the obvious choice, unless you prefer something more retro, like the “Krypti”, with its wooden bar and the heavy furniture. A little bit down the road you will come across the “Likno tis Smaragdas”, a shop with a wide range of products: ointments, herbs, pasta, but also pâtés, marmalades and tsipouro. Aggelos, Smaragda’s husband, is the person you need if you have lost your way or looking for information on every road’s state around the village.

A FEW MILES DOWN THE ROAD, you will find Pertouli, which, during recent years, is overflowing with elegant hotels and country houses. The couples prefer it for its quiet ambience rather than the family and buzzing ambience of Elati, and for one more reason: it is situated near the ski centre! So, a good idea would be to get yourselves warm near the fireplace during the night, playing board games or reading one more novel by John Grisham, and, during the day, to exploit all the opportunities given to you by Magic Sport. Magic Sport is an outdoor activities company, located on 12.74 square miles of the University Forest of Pertouli or else “Pertouliotika livadia”, as the locals call them. Night star

Στις εγκαταστάσεις του χιονοδρομικού κέντρου λειτουργεί σχολή σκι για όσους επιθυμούν ταχύρρυθμα μαθήματα. Ο Κόκκινος Βράχος: Είναι ένας μεγάλος πέτρινος όγκος πάνω από την Ελάτη και το ιδανικότερο σημείο για να παρατηρήσετε την ευρύτερη περιοχή. Ο πιο εύκολος τρόπος να φτάσετε εκεί πάνω είναι με ένα off road όχημα. Ωστόσο, αρκετοί προτιμούν την πεζοπορία και κάποιοι άλλοι, ακόμη πιο τολμηροί, την αναρρίχηση! And since being on a mountain means discovering it off road, for those of you that have a 4Χ4 vehicle, it would be a bad idea to leave it in the hotel parking area. Koziakas has plenty of off road routes and you will be able to discover them, either using your GPS or with Pindos’ mountain organized eco-tourism office (pindos-explorer.gr), which you may find at Pyli, Trikala. Nonetheless, an excursion to Aspropotamos visiting its high coniferous trees is a must, as well as a stop for coffee at the Mantania Tower!

HOT SPOTS: Pertouli Ski Centre: It is considered to be the most well-organized of the smaller scale ski centres in Greece. It opened in 1983 and was reconstructed a few years ago. It has a piste for beginners and also two larger ones, three ski lifts, a 1,000 m2 chalet and electrical lights along the main piste for night skiing. On the ski centre’s facilities you will also find a school for skiing intensive lessons. The Red Rock (Kokkinos vrachos): This is a huge stony volume over Elati and an ideal spot to view the wider area from above. The easiest way to reach it is on an off road vehicle. Nonetheless, there are many who prefer trekking and others, braver, who prefer climbing! Specialized groups have secured the rock, creating a unique mountain climbing experience.

εννήθηκα στην Αθήνα, στον Περισσό, το 1974. Μετά τα είκοσι ένα μου, άρχισα να μένω σε διάφορες γειτονιές: Κάτω Πετράλωνα, Γκάζι και τώρα Ψυρρή. Ο λόγος που ασχολήθηκα με την υποκριτική δεν είναι ξεκάθαρος μέσα μου ακόμη και τώρα. Γύρω στα είκοσι τρία μου, είχα κάποιους φίλους που ασχολούνταν με το θέατρο και όσα έλεγαν μου εξήπταν τη φαντασία. Έτσι, πέρασα στη σχολή και ακόμη συνεχίζω στις διαδρομές της υποκριτικής. Με το που τελείωσα, έφυγα για δύο χρόνια στη Νέα Υόρκη, γεγονός που με επηρέασε πολύ. Σημαντικές συνεργασίες που με καθόρισαν και με εξέλιξαν ήταν αυτές με τον Θόδωρο Τερζόπουλο, τον Μιχαήλ Μαρμαρινό και τον Κωνσταντίνο Γιάνναρη. ■ Στου Ψυρρή, μου αρέσει πολύ ότι πάντα υπάρχει κάτι ανοικτό, είναι μία συνοικία που δεν κοιμάται. Παράλληλα, έχω δίπλα την κρεαταγορά και τη λαχαναγορά. Με απωθεί η εικόνα της βρόμικης Αθήνας, αλλά οφείλω να ομολογήσω ότι οι κάτοικοί της δεν την προσέχουν καθόλου. Επίσης, δεν μου αρέσει η ρυμοτομία της και τα άσχημα κτήρια που έχουν ανεγερθεί τα τελευταία χρόνια.

■ Από την άλλη, δεν αλλάζω με τίποτε το φως της Αττικής. Το φως και η θάλασσα της Ελλάδας δεν υπάρχουν πουθενά αλλού και αυτό το λέει ένας άνθρωπος που έχει ταξιδέψει πολύ. Αγαπημένα μου στέκια για ποτό είναι το “Still café” στου Ψυρρή, το “42”, το “Joker’s”, το “Use”, το “Key” και για φαγητό στου “Νικήτα”, στην περιοχή όπου μένω. ■ Όλο το χρόνο μου τον απορροφά η κόρη μου, η Φοίβη. Βγαίνουμε βόλτες και γυρνάμε στην Αθήνα. Η ζωή μου άλλαξε ολοκληρωτικά με τη γέννηση του παιδιού. Πλέον χαμογελώ πιο συχνά, αν και ίσως είμαι λίγο περισσότερο κουρασμένος. Δεν αλλάζει το μυαλό του άντρα όταν γίνεται πατέρας. Αυτές που σίγουρα αλλάζουν είναι οι προτεραιότητες, αφού μεγαλώνουν οι ευθύνες. Εμείς οι άντρες μένουμε “αιώνιοι” έφηβοι, πάντα παιδιά, κατά κάποιον τρόπο. ■ Τα στοιχεία που δίνουν σε μία σχέση διάρκεια στο χρόνο είναι ο σεβασμός, η ελευθερία, ο έρωτας που έρχεται, φεύγει και επανέρχεται. Είναι πολύ σημαντικό να μπορείς να συζητάς και να μοιράζεσαι με το σύντροφό σου όλα αυτά που σκέφτεσαι, αλλιώς η σχέση τελματώνει. Πρέπει να στήνουμε παγίδες, για να δίνουμε καινούργιο ενδιαφέρον στα πράγματα. Δεν είμαι ο τύπος που επαναπαύεται σε μία σχέση, στο γάμο μου και στην ύπαρξη ενός παιδιού. ■ Η δουλειά μου πραγματικά μου αρέσει πολύ και όσο περνά ο καιρός, ακόμη περισσότερο. Μου αρέσει και το θέατρο, αλλά με κουράζει η διάρκειά του, ότι, για παράδειγμα, πρέπει να διανύσεις μία σεζόν με το ίδιο έργο. Αν άφηνα το θέατρο, θα έκανα κάτι που να έχει σχέση με τη φύση, μακριά από την Αθήνα. Θα ήθελα να κάνω κάτι που να έχει σχέση με το κρασί και το λάδι. Προς το παρόν, μόνο τα καταναλώνω. Θα δούμε... Αλλά και εκεί τελικά θα έκανα ένα σόου για τους χωρικούς. (γέλια) ■ Άπιαστο όνειρο; Θα ήθελα να παίζω στον “Νονό”! (γέλια) Ονειρεύομαι κυρίως ταξίδια. Τα όνειρά μου έχουν να κάνουν με την αδρεναλίνη: για παράδειγμα, θέλω να πέσω με αλεξίπτωτο. Χαρακτήρας; Είμαι σκορποχώρι. Υπερκινητικός, εγωιστής, γκρινιάρης και άνθρωπος των άκρων. Από χόμπι, μόνο scuba diving το καλοκαίρι.»

“I was born in Athens, in Perissos in 1974. Since I was twenty-one, I have been living in different neighborhoods: Kato Petralona, Gazi and now Psyrri. The reason why I got involved with acting is not that clear to me, even today. When I was twenty-three, I had some friends that were involved in theatre productions and all those things they were talking about sounded very intriguing. So, I passed the exams and I joined an acting course and here I am still walking down the acting road. When I finished my studies, I left for New York for two years, which is something that has influenced me a lot. There were certain important collaborations that made me evolve as an actor and defined my approach such as those with Theodoros Terzopoulos, Michael Marmarinos and Constantine Giannaris. ■ What I like a lot in Psyrri is that there is always some place that is open – it is a neighborhood that never sleeps. On the other hand, I have the meat and vegetable market very close to my place. I hate the dirty streets of Athens, although I admit that it is its citizens that do not take care of it.

■ However, I wouldn’t change the light of Attica. You cannot find Greece’s light and sea anywhere else and this is coming from a person who has travelled a lot.

My favourite hangouts for drinks are ‘Still café’ at Psyrri, ‘42’, ‘Joker’s’, ‘Use’, ‘Key’ and ‘Nikitas’ for eating, near my place. ■ I spend most of my time with my daughter, Phoebe. We go for walks and spend time around Athens. My life changed when my child was born. Nowadays, I smile more often, even though I may be a little bit more tired. A man’s way of thinking doesn’t change when he becomes a father. What changes are the priorities, since now you have more responsibilities. Men remain adolescents forever, like children, in a way. ■ What you need in order to have a relationship that will last in time is respect, freedom, love which comes and goes and comes back again. It is very important to be able to talk to the other and share with your partner all those things you think, or else the relationship enters difficult waters. We must be welcome to surprises and learn how to make them too, in order to give new meaning to things. I am not the type of person that would rest and find ease in a relationship, in a marriage or in the birth of a child. ■ I really enjoy my work and as the time passes, I like acting in a theatrical play, but I grow tired of its duration, when, for example, you have to spend the whole season acting in the same play. If I were to stop acting, I would occupy myself with something that would have to do with nature, away from Athens. I would like to do something that would have to do with wine or olive oil. For the time being, I just consume them. We will see ... Although, even in that case, I would end up doing a show for the peasants. (laughing) ■ A dream that I wish could come true? I would like to play a part in the ‘Godfather’! (laughing) I dream of travelling most of the time. My dreams have to do with adrenaline: for example, I would like to sky dive. What kind of type of person am I? I am all over the place, in scattered pieces: hyperactive, self-centered, grumpy and a man of extremes. And my hobbies: scuba diving in the summer.”

Μαίρη Συνατσάκη, η καινούργια παρουσιάστρια του νέου κύκλου του «Master Chef» του MEGA, κατάφερε να ξεκλέψει χρόνο από τα γυρίσματα που ολοκληρώνονται τέλος Δεκεμβρίου, για να πιει τον καφέ της στο Aethrion Lounge του Hilton Αθηνών.

Ταξιδεύατε με κίνητρο τη γαστρονομία; Ακριβώς, είμαι food maniac! Ταξίδευα, λοιπόν, αποκλειστικά και μόνο για να δοκιμάσω μία σπεσιαλιτέ! Απ’ ό,τι καταλαβαίνω, το «Master Chef» είναι ο ιδανικός χώρος για σας! Έτσι νιώθω! Μην ξεχνάτε ότι το κριθαράκι με καραβίδες του Λευτέρη Λαζάρου είναι το αγαπημένο μου πιάτο και τα cupcakes, το γλυκό που προτιμώ. Αγχώνεστε για την κριτική που θα αντιμετωπίσετε; Η τηλεόραση είναι για μένα ένα μέσο, στο οποίο αν δεν ασχολείσαι με την ενημέρωση, δεν πρέπει να παίρνεις πολύ σοβαρά τον εαυτό σου. Σίγουρα για μένα αυτή η δουλειά είναι ό,τι σημαντικότερο έχω κάνει μέχρι σήμερα στην τηλεόραση, γι’ αυτό δίνω όλο τον εαυτό μου, προσπαθώντας να είμαι καλή σε ό,τι έχω αναλάβει. Από εκεί και πέρα, αντιμετωπίζω όσα με αγχώνουν με το να οργανώνομαι σωστά. Ποιο είναι το motto σας; Δεν πιστεύω στην τελειότητα. Το σύνθημά μου είναι: «Αγάπησε τις ατέλειές σου – κομμάτια του εαυτού σου είναι και αυτές, έχει σημασία που υπάρχουν». Δείχνετε σαν να έχετε δουλέψει πολύ με τον εαυτό σας. Σίγουρα η ψυχολογία που σπουδάσατε σας έχει βοηθήσει. Με έχει ωριμάσει... Από τα δεκαοκτώ μου συνέχισα τη ζωή μου αναλαμβάνοντας τις ευθύνες μου μακριά από τους γονείς μου, συγκατοικώντας με τη δίδυμη αδελφή μου Αλίκη. Επίσης, με έχει βοηθήσει η ψυχοθεραπεία που κάνω. Ξεκίνησα τις συνεδρίες, γιατί το είχα ανάγκη, έπρεπε να αντιμετωπίσω τις κρίσεις πανικού. Στη συνέχεια, βρήκα πως έχουν πολύ ενδιαφέρον. Σήμερα, σκέφτομαι πως κάποια μέρα ίσως ασχοληθώ επαγγελματικά με αυτό το θέμα.

Mary Sinatsaki, the new presenter of the latest season of MEGA channel’s “Master Chef”, managed to take a few minutes out of her busy schedule in order to have a coffee at the Aethrion Lounge of the Hilton Athens.

Did you travel with gastronomy as your motive?

Exactly, I am a food maniac! I used to travel, just to try a specific dish!

From what I understand, “Master Chef” is the ideal place for you!

That’s exactly how I feel! Let’s not forget that Lefteris Lazarou’s crayfish kritharotto is my favourite dish and cupcakes are my favourite pastry.

Are you nervous about the criticism you are going to receive, when the show will air?

Television is a means for me, where if you have nothing to do with newscasting, you shouldn’t be so serious about yourself. Surely this job is for me the most important thing I have done in TV up until today, and that is why I am dedicated to it; I try to be good at everything I am in charge of. From that point on, I treat everything that makes me nervous with better organizing it.

What is your motto?

I don’t believe in perfection. So, my motto is: “To love your imperfections – they are part of who you are. What matters is that they are there.”

You seem to have done a lot of work with yourself. Certainly the fact that you studied psychology has helped you with it.

It has made me grow up ... Since I was eighteen, I lived my life taking responsibility for my choices, away from my parents; I live with my twin sister, Aliki. Also, psychotherapy has helped me a lot, which I have been attending for many years. I started the sessions because I needed it; I had to face the panic attacks I used to have. Then, I discovered that it was very interesting. Nowadays, I think that, maybe someday, I could exercise this profession.

Autumn is here and the Aethrion Lounge is open again with a new concept.

The all-time classic café of the Hilton Athens has just launched a new “deli corner”, where you can find Greek traditional products. Executive Chef Yannis Manikis and his team are proposing an assortment of delicious and value-for-money pastries to accompany your morning coffee. ώς συνδέεται το «Πίσω στο Σπίτι» με την κατάσταση που βιώνουμε αυτή την εποχή; Νίκη Αναστασίου: H σειρά παρουσιάζει αυτό που ζούμε σήμερα, φυσικά με μία δόση υπερβολής. Αν και τώρα που το σκέφτομαι, μπορώ να πω ότι αυτό που βιώνουμε είναι ακόμη πιο υπερβολικό. Αποστόλης Τότσικας: Παρόλο που η σειρά είναι επίκαιρη, εγώ προσωπικά, αυτήν τη στιγμή, δεν θα κατέφευγα πίσω στην ασφάλεια των γονιών μου με την πρώτη δυσκολία. Και αυτό, γιατί δεν ήμουν ποτέ της υπερβολής. Θανάσης Τσαλταμπάσης: Εγώ, πάντως, βλέπω και τη θετική πλευρά. Το σίγουρο είναι πως ζούμε σε μία εποχή, στην οποία οι διαπροσωπικές σχέσεις –ερωτικές φιλικές, οικογενειακές– θα ανθίσουν, εφόσον δεν υπάρχουν χρήματα για να ζει καθένας μόνος του! Ν.Α.: Καθώς εξελίσσεται η σειρά, ερχόμαστε πιο κοντά σαν οικογένεια. Αυτό θα γίνει και στην πραγματικότητα, πιστεύω. Α.Τ.: Θα γίνει η αρχή μίας καινούργιας επικοινωνίας.

How does “Piso sto Spiti” relate with the situation we are living in these days?

Niki Anastasiou: The series presents what we live in nowadays, of course with a little exaggeration to it. Even though, now that I think about it, what we are living in is even more of an exaggeration.

Apostolis Totsikas: Even though the series is a contemporary story, personally, I would not go back to the safety of my parents’ house when faced with the first difficulties. And this is because I was never a person that exaggerated.

Thanasis Tsaltampasis: I, on the other hand, see a positive side to it too. It is quite certain that we live in times when interpersonal relations – with lovers, friends and family – are bound to thrive, since there isn’t enough money for everyone to live by himself! Ν.Α.: As the series evolves we come closer to each other, like a family. In my opinion, this will also happen in reality too. Α.Τ.: It will be the start of a new kind of communication.

Πώς είναι η συνεργασία με τους τηλεοπτικούς σας γονείς, τη Μαρία Καβογιάννη και τον Θοδωρή Αθερίδη; Ν.Α.: Απόλαυση! Θ.Τ.: Μας αγκάλιασαν και μας έχουν κάνει να νιώθουμε ισάξιοί τους. Αυτό σίγουρα φαίνεται και θα βοηθήσει στην επιτυχία της σειράς. Α.Τ.: Προσωπικά δεν έχω δουλέψει πολύ στην κωμωδία, αλλά αυτοί οι άνθρωποι –όπως και ο Θανάσης και ο Χρήστος– με βοηθούν πολύ. Συνηθίζεται στο μεγάλο καστ να υπάρχει κόντρα μεταξύ των ηθοποιών. Εδώ υπάρχουν αλληλεγγύη και αλληλοβοήθεια. Τι αγαπάτε αυτό τον καιρό στην Αθήνα; Χ.Σ.: Τους Atenistas. Ν.Α.: Το ότι επιτρέπεται πλέον το ποδήλατο στο μετρό και ότι ο κόσμος μπορεί να κυκλοφορεί άνετα στην πόλη.. Άννα Μενεκάκου: Eμένα με έκανε να νιώσω όμορφα το γεγονός ότι προσέφερα βιβλία που συγκεντρώθηκαν για φυλακισμένους, παιδιά άπορων οικογενειών κ.ά.

How is your cooperation with your TV parents, Maria Kavoyanni and Thodoris Atheridis? Ν.Α.: It’s a delight!

T.Τ.: They welcomed us and helped us feel equal. This is something that definitely shows and it will contribute to the series’ success. Α.Τ.: I haven’t worked a lot on sit-coms in the past, but these people – as Thanassis and Christos – help me very much. Usually, when there is a large number of people in the cast, there are tensions between actors. However, in this case there is only solidarity and helping one another.

What do you like in Athens nowadays?

C.S.: The Atenistas. Ν.Α.: The fact that nowadays it is allowed to get your bike inside the metro and that people are able to move around the city quite comfortably.

Anna Menekakou: I, personally, felt great when I donated some books that were offered to prisoners, to children of poor families etc. People gather for

Ν.Α.: Ο κόσμος έχει ανάγκη να μη σκέφτεται δυσάρεστες καταστάσεις.

T.Τ.: I notice that these days I go to the DVD club and I tend to choose comedies, and not some movie that would alter my good mood. Ν.Α.: People need to forget, they need to laugh, not to think unfortunate situations.

ROCK THE BALLET (JANUARY, 27 - 29) The company returns after their huge success last November. We are talking about Rasta Thomas and his ensemble, the Bad Boys of Dance, who are performing for the second time in Badminton their show “Rock the Ballet”, which is marked by more than six hundred sold-out performances around the world. Rasta Thomas’ Rock the Ballet features a stellar soundtrack including some of the biggest hits from U2, Michael Jackson, Prince, Queen, Coldplay and Lenny Kravitz.

Η ενορία του Αγίου Χαραλάμπους στα Ιλίσια γειτνιάζει με ένα όμορφο πάρκο, ιδανικό για περίπατο, τζόγκινγκ ή ποδηλασία. Δυστυχώς, αυτός ο χώρος δεν είναι ευρέως γνωστός και σε κάποια σημεία παρουσιάζει εικόνες εγκατάλειψης: σκουπίδια, γκραφίτι, σπασμένες πινακίδες κ.λπ. Οι εργαζόμενοι του Hilton Αθηνών συγκεντρώθηκαν εκεί μαζί με τις οικογένειές τους την Κυριακή 23 Οκτωβρίου προκειμένου να καθαρίσουν το χώρο. Σκοπός των υπαλλήλων του ξενοδοχείου, οι οποίοι είναι ιδιαίτερα ευαισθητοποιημένοι σε περιβαλλοντικά θέματα, ήταν να αναδειχθεί αυτή η μικρή όαση πρασίνου, ώστε να αξιοποιηθεί όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερο από τους κατοίκους, αλλά και από τους επισκέπτες της περιοχής / The parish of Aghios Charalambos church at Ilisia is located near a beautiful park, ideal for a walk, for jogging or for a ride with the bike. Unfortunately, the area is not widely known and, in certain parts, the park seems quite abandoned: trash, graffiti, broken road signs, etc. The people of Hilton Athens got together along with their families on Sunday, the 23d of October, to clean the park. The purpose of the hotel employees, who are especially concerned about the environment, was to promote this small oasis of green, so that the inhabitants of the surrounding area, and of course its visitors, would be able to benefit the most out of it
