Madeleine Mesam and Annika Klaas are two interdisciplinary textile and fashion designers with a focus on artistic work. Annika Klaas focuses on the formal and technical potential of knitwear for the development and implementation of innovative concepts, whether for new designs – with a subtle interplay of structures and colors – or for shapes, that would not be manufacturable in classic tailoring. In July 2018 she won the European Fashion Award FASH with her collection “Slow Curve.“ Her on-demand knitwear collection “Jaune“ received several sponsorships and was shown at the Vancouver Fashion Week and at the Tokyo Fashion Week last fall. Madeleine Mesam draws and develops marvelous paintings, that Annika takes as inspiration for her knitwear designs. She studied textile design with a focus on print design and is now doing a Fine arts conception Master, where she dives deeper into exploring the interaction of shapes and colour. Madeleine takes her inspiration from everyday objects as well as from nature with its floral and organic shapes. Collection: “Nothing New” is visual research on the need of always producing more in fashion--more products, faster collections, new concepts, aesthetics, silhouettes, forms. This results in even faster trends every season. Stopping that hustle, one starts to ask questions. Is the new always the better? Do I need to participate in this? Looking back at their past collections, Madeleine Mesam and Annika Klaas really liked the aesthetics of them, realizing that there is not the need to bring new aesthetics to every collection. “Nothing New” is the outcome of styling all of their past collections together resulting in an eclectic mix of colors and materials, prints and silhouettes. It serves as an inspiration for upcoming collections that are based on the aesthetics and techniques of their past collections. It values the work they’ve done before and enables them to continuously improve little things, building on what they’ve learned from past products and works.
Working like this a customer could build up a wardrobe over time, investing in one or two pieces every season, that are complimenting their current wardrobe instead of exchanging it. There is also the idea that life consists of so many contrasts, details and complexities that make a human being and their story, so there is no possibility to renew oneself or one’s wardrobe without incorporating all of these experiences and nuances, whether it happens consciously or subconsciously. As every collection and project that is being used tells their own story, now the aim is to develop a collection like a collage, with a mood that tells a lot of different stories at the same time. Alwin Maigler is a freelance photographer based in South Germany. His main focus is on fashion, portraiture and fine art photography. He’s a Junior member of the BFF – the professional association of Freelance Photographers, which stands for photography and image composition of the highest quality in Germany. This is guaranteed by its renowned founders and honorary member also including legendary international photographers such as Sarah Moon, Oliviero Toscani and Peter Lindbergh. It is thus a association with the highest degree of professionalism and an extraordinarily creative quality. It is this combination that continues to make them unique in Europe. For Alwin, the whole concept and vision of the shoot was on the coloring of the fabrics and the African vibe to it. By using the right settings and the proper time of day, the African grassland provided the perfect background, while the sun highlighted the bright colors. He tries to work with natural light as much as he can and keeps his postproduction subtle and minimalistic, to maintain an authentic and natural visual experience. Melissa Wanjiku is a 24 year old model based in South Germany. She likes the basic things: hanging out with friends and going shopping. This summer she finally starts her dream job as a flight attendant.
